Today's reading will cover the Book of Job Chapters 1 and 2. Today we will be introduced to Job, whom we are told, even God said was blameless, did what was right, and turned away from sin. We will see the adversary accuse Job of only being good because God treated him well, kept him safe, and blessed him with riches. And we will see that when God allows Job to suffer loss of everything- material possessions, children, and physical health, he did not turn away from God or speak poorly of Him, even when encouraged to do so. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how hard it can be to go through difficult times or watch others go through difficult times without assuming that God is punishing them (or us!)  for something they (or we) have done. There are times we may never know why we are experiencing things. It is important to maintain our faith regardless of what we experience in life and not fall away from God, as well as not jump to the conclusion of being punished by God when either we or others experience hardship. We need to remember Job's example of faithfulness to God and his refusal to speak poorly about God. We need to trust that God is with us and He will work good into everything that happens. God is in charge and everything we have comes from HIM. Everything is HIS to give or take away as He chooses.

00:00:03
Speaker
Hey there everyone, today is July 2nd, or 12th, I don't know what was going on with my mind there, and you are with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. Thank you for joining me today for our daily reading as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.

Overview of the Book of Job

00:00:22
Speaker
If you are using that daily commitment calendar, go ahead and take that out in your sticker or however you're marking it off, because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:34
Speaker
Thank you for joining me. I'm so glad that you're here with me as we go through the Bible.

Historical Context of Job

00:00:38
Speaker
We are going to be going into the book of Job today, starting with chapter one, and we will be reading the book of Job for the next five days after today.
00:00:47
Speaker
So for six days, we will be reading the book of Job. So you may be wondering, why are we reading the book of Job now? Did it happen now? And the answer to that question is no, Job did not occur in time at this point.
00:01:02
Speaker
and But we do know that it was ah potentially written down at about this time. So prior to this, Job was a very old story and it had been handed down through the generations in what we call the oral tradition.
00:01:18
Speaker
It was a story that was being told. but they were writing things down and keeping records as we've seen with like the book of Chronicles and second and first Kings.
00:01:29
Speaker
And so this was about the time that we think that the book of Job, the story was finally actually written down and recorded. And so that is why Karen Henley has included it at this time.
00:01:44
Speaker
But most scholars do agree that it is potentially the oldest story that occurred. So it's possible that this occurred before so even Abraham, but we don't know for sure exactly.
00:01:57
Speaker
I did try to do some research and the research suggests that it may have even occurred as recently as ah after Moses. based upon the reference to the Sabians in the Big Bible.
00:02:10
Speaker
But ah we don't know exactly for sure when Job's event happened. We just know that it happened a long time ago.
00:02:20
Speaker
So we are going to start that today.

Job's Trials Begin

00:02:23
Speaker
And we are going to start with chapter one, and it is entitled, Trouble.
00:02:30
Speaker
Job lived long ago, and many people had told his story. At last, someone wrote it down.
00:02:39
Speaker
you Once there was a man named Job. He lived in the land of Uz, and he did what was good and right. He obeyed God and stayed away from sin, and no one could blame him for doing wrong.
00:02:56
Speaker
Job had seven sons, three daughters, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 1,000 oxen, 500 donkeys, and he had lots of servants.
00:03:11
Speaker
Job was the greatest man in the East.
00:03:17
Speaker
Job's sons took turns having big dinners at their houses, and they would ask their three sisters to come and eat for dinner. They would eat and they would drink.
00:03:28
Speaker
And then Job would make sure that they made things right with God. So he would offer God a gift for each one of them. He said, they might have sinned.
00:03:41
Speaker
They might have said bad things about God. So Job offered a gift to say they were sorry. And he did he did it so God would forgive them.
00:03:53
Speaker
And that's what Job always did.
00:03:57
Speaker
One day the angels came before God, and Satan, the one who blames people, came with them too. Where did you come from? God asked Satan.
00:04:10
Speaker
I have been going here and there on the earth, said Satan. Did you ever think about Job? asked God. Nobody else in the world is like him.
00:04:23
Speaker
He does what is right and good. Nobody can blame him for doing anything wrong. He obeys me and stays away from sin.
00:04:36
Speaker
Do you think he obeys you for nothing? Asked Satan. You're keeping him safe. You keep everything he owns safe. You send good things to him.
00:04:47
Speaker
His sheep and cows are all over the land. Send him bad times. Then he will say bad things about you.
00:04:59
Speaker
All right, said God. You can do what you want with whatever he has, but do not touch Job.
00:05:09
Speaker
Then Satan left. And one day Job's sons and daughters were having dinner together. They were at the oldest brother's house. A man ran to Job with a message.
00:05:22
Speaker
He said, the oxen were working in the field and the donkeys were eating grass nearby, but robbers came and took them. They killed all your servants and I am the only one who got away.
00:05:36
Speaker
This man had hardly stopped talking when another man came in and said, fire came from the sky. it burned up the sheep and the servants and I am the only one who got away.
00:05:51
Speaker
This man had hardly stopped talking when another man came. Robbers came and took your camels, he said. They killed all your servants, and I am the only one who got away.
00:06:09
Speaker
This man also had hardly stopped talking when another man came in, and he said, Your sons and daughters were having dinner and all of a sudden a strong wind blew in.
00:06:24
Speaker
It came from the desert. It hit all four corners of the house. The house fell on top of them and they all died. I'm the only one who got away.

Job's Faith Amidst Adversity

00:06:39
Speaker
Job got up. He tore his clothes that he was wearing and he cut off all of his hair. He put his face to the ground and he worshiped God.
00:06:52
Speaker
Job said, I had nothing when I was born and I will have nothing when I die. God gave me what I had and he took it away.
00:07:03
Speaker
Praise God's name.
00:07:07
Speaker
Chapter 2. Three Friends One day the angels came before God again. and Satan came with them. "'Where did you come from?' asked God. "'I've been going here and there on the earth,' said Satan.
00:07:27
Speaker
"'Did you think about Job?' asked God. "'There is no one in the world like him. "'He does what is right and good. "'He obeys me and stays away from sin.' You talked me into letting him have hard times, and there is no good reason for it.
00:07:47
Speaker
But Job is still good. Skin for skin, said Satan. People will give anything to stay alive.
00:07:58
Speaker
Hurt his body, and then he will say bad things about you.
00:08:04
Speaker
All right, said God. Do what you want with Job, but do not kill him.
00:08:13
Speaker
So Satan left, and he made Job get sores on his body. They were on the bottom of his feet. They were on the top of his head, and they were all over his body.
00:08:27
Speaker
They hurt.
00:08:29
Speaker
Job sat in dust from a fire. He took a piece of a broken pot, and he rubbed it across his sores. His wife said to him, Are you going to be true to God?
00:08:45
Speaker
Say bad things about him and die. That is a foolish thing to say, said Job. Should we let God send us just good things? Shouldn't we let him send trouble if he wants?
00:08:59
Speaker
So Job did not sin by saying bad things about God.
00:09:05
Speaker
Now Job had three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, and they heard what had happened to Job, so they got together and went to go see him. The friends saw Job when they were still far away, but they could hardly tell it was Job.
00:09:23
Speaker
They began to cry out loud. They were so sad that they tore their robes. They put dust on their heads. Then they sat down on the ground with Job and they sat there with him for seven days and nights.
00:09:40
Speaker
Nobody said a thing because they could see just how much Job was hurting.
00:09:49
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:09:55
Speaker
So we see that Job is going have to go through a lot And one of the things that I want to be sure that I mentioned is that as we've been seeing throughout our reading is that God can use everything for good.
00:10:13
Speaker
And Job was going through hard times at the suggestion of Satan, who is our adversary. He is our accuser. He will accuse and God works everything to good.

Reflecting on Job's Story

00:10:28
Speaker
So We don't, we we don't, ah we will see at the end that, that God eventually restores Job's belongings and like that, and even give some additional family.
00:10:40
Speaker
But as he's in the beginning part of this, and he's experiencing everything being taken away from him. it's It can be very difficult to see and know that he hadn't done anything wrong.
00:10:53
Speaker
And yet he was still having to go through hard times. And it can be very difficult when we ourselves go through hard times and we we may wonder, am I simply being tested?
00:11:05
Speaker
ah and we may think, and other people may tell us that we did something wrong, as we will see his friends doing. They will assume that because ah Job is going through hard times, that he must have done something to deserve it.
00:11:20
Speaker
And so often we can jump to that conclusion when we know somebody or ah and we see somebody is going through hard times.
00:11:32
Speaker
And so we want to be careful not to jump to these conclusions because we don't know exactly why people are having to go through things. We do know that God works everything to good and that ah we should not...
00:11:50
Speaker
complain to God and curse God when these things happen. And that's what we see Job remaining steadfast in, is that Job acknowledges here, and this is ah part of our daily application.

The Nature of Life's Riches and Faith

00:12:03
Speaker
Every single thing we have comes from God. It is God's to give, just as we saw that God gives kingdoms to people, to kings, and he takes them away. And he uses everything according to his purpose,
00:12:17
Speaker
All people on the earth belong to God. And we know that our God is good and that he is love. And so it can be difficult to to deal with and the story and to see Job suffering simply because Satan has accused him and God allowed it to happen.
00:12:37
Speaker
And Job suffered quite a bit as we see he lost everything. But through this, ah we see Job is staying firm and not what we would call blaspheming God or speaking poorly about God.
00:12:50
Speaker
like We have seen, I'm sure a lot of us have met people and have heard stories about people who turn away from God when they go through very, very difficult situations.
00:13:02
Speaker
I know for me, a couple of times I've met people who simply just don't want to be part of going to church because they don't want to be around the people. ah Because when they went through hard times, the the first thing these people did was they came up and said, what did you do?
00:13:19
Speaker
ah What did you do that was so sinful that God is punishing you? And we need to be very careful to not jump to these conclusions when we see hard times coming upon people.
00:13:30
Speaker
We don't always know why God does things. ah We may eventually learn why by seeing that God is teaching us things and allowing us to practice our faith.
00:13:43
Speaker
But we do know that God is always with us. Jesus tells us he is always with us. We are never alone. And despite the difficult times, ah Job also will learn things ah through these difficult times.
00:13:59
Speaker
And we want to be sure that when we are at the hand of ourselves, even going through difficult times, that we not be tempted to turn away from god And as Satan has accused that Job will do, we need to remember to hold firm in our faith as we've been learning and to remember, like Job is showing us, that everything we have comes from God.
00:14:23
Speaker
And as we arose and arrived in this world with absolutely nothing, we can't take anything with us. So we may be able to

Encouragement to Maintain Faith Like Job

00:14:33
Speaker
accumulate riches for ourselves and property and and to even have children, but God is God over everything.
00:14:41
Speaker
And although we may not understand a lot of what happens because his ways are higher than our ways, we just need to have faith and trust in God that he is going to work good through everything.
00:14:54
Speaker
And so it can be a hard lesson to learn, but we want to be sure that we don't jump to conclusions and and immediately say, well, somebody is being punished by God because we don't know that that is so.
00:15:06
Speaker
Just because bad things are happening does not mean that people are being punished, as we will see with Job here ah throughout the story, is that we see that Job had not done anything wrong, and yet God did allow these things to happen.
00:15:20
Speaker
So we want to be sure that we are offering a good testimony like Job, that when hard times come, that we not turn away from God, but that we still cling to his love and his faithfulness and know that he will see us through because God did see through Job through everything that happened, as we will see in the next six days as we read through the whole book.
00:15:44
Speaker
So I hope that you are intrigued to continue hearing the story about Job and join me again tomorrow as we pick up in our next chapters. And I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and to keep us mindful of, of not jumping to conclusions ah when other people or ourselves go through difficult times to, to not first jump to that conclusion of, well, what am I being punished for?
00:16:12
Speaker
in, and And to say that, you know, to turn away from God, we need to remember to hold steady and hold faithful to God. Because God is always with us and he will work everything to good.
00:16:26
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. i hope you have a fantastic rest of your day. And I will be here for every everyone again tomorrow.
