Mariah Carey's Holiday Hits and Legal Stories

00:00:55
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Did you know that Mariah Carey is the first artist to have number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 across four decades, the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and twenty twenty s This achievement was made possible by her holiday song, All I Want for Christmas Is You, which has returned to number one during the holidays every year since 2019.
00:01:22
Speaker
She truly is the Queen of Christmas. And that title hasn't come without some controversy. Before she released her version of All I Want for Christmas is You in 1994, there was another song with the same title, a 1989 country song by Vince Vance and the Valiants. You'd recognize it if you heard it Yes, and Vince Vance, whose real name is Andy Stone, sued Mariah in 2022 for copyright infringement, even though her song was released 28 years earlier.
00:01:52
Speaker
The judge dismissed the case this year, finding that the songs only shared commonplace Christmas song cliches, and even ordered him to pay Mariah's legal fees.
00:02:03
Speaker
And here's another interesting Christmas song controversy. Remember when we mentioned in a previous episode that Mariah Carey co-wrote Where Are You Christmas for the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas?
00:02:16
Speaker
She actually did record a version of it, but it couldn't be released due to a legal dispute with her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola. That's why Faith Hill ended up recording the song we all know today.
00:02:29
Speaker
And I can't imagine her being a bigger queen of Christmas, but if she released that song, I'm i'm sure it would be a huge hit too.

Discussion on Christmas Song Preferences

00:02:38
Speaker
All right, let's jump into a quick round of This or That based on today's theme.

00:03:17
Speaker
um I think I'd have to go with Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree too. Okay, this or that, modern Christmas songs. Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande or ah Like It's Christmas by the Jonas Brothers.
00:03:32
