Story of Elf on the Shelf

00:00:52
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Did you know that Elf on the Shelf wasn't some corporate creation, but a family project?
00:01:00
Speaker
It was created by a mother and her twin daughters in 2005. They decided to write a book based on their holiday tradition. Each book included an elf called a Scout Elf.
00:01:11
Speaker
The mother, Carol Abersolde, was actually sharing a tradition from her own childhood in the 70s. Her family had an elf named Fisbee, that's Frisbee without the R, who'd watch over their home during the holidays. So technically, Fisbee was the very first elf on the shelf.
00:01:29
Speaker
Families are encouraged to give them their own names, and popular ones include Buddy, Jingle, and Tinsel. the whole elf-on-the-shelf phenomenon might have remained a small family business if not for a lucky celebrity sighting.
00:01:43
Speaker
In 2007, paparazzi caught Jennifer Garner out and about holding an elf-on-the-shelf book. That photo went viral, surprisingly, in the pre-Instagram era, landing them a spot on the Today Show and suddenly becoming a holiday sensation.

This or That: Holiday Treats Discussion

00:02:00
Speaker
All right, let's jump into a quick round of this or that based on today's theme. Okay, this or that. Christmas cookies. Snickerdoodle or chocolate crinkle?
00:02:13
Speaker
This is isn't even a competition for me. Really? I would go snickerdoodle. Okay. I do remember you love snickerdoodle. I had a phase where I made snickerdoodles all the time in like eighth grade.
00:02:25
Speaker
I don't know why but I absolutely love them. Will you make some this year? Because I don't think I've had some in a long time. Yes, I will. Okay. Let me make some Snickerdoodles. All right.
00:02:38
Speaker
All right. That sounds good. Well, I kind of forget what they taste like. So I'd have to go with Chocolate Crinkle because i went through a phase of making those all the time for Christmas. but yeah Okay. Do you want me to make those too?
00:02:51
Speaker
No, I'll make those. You make Snickerdoodles. niramoodles okay yeah i'll I'll be having some

Debate: Secret Santa vs. White Elephant

00:02:55
Speaker
of those as well. Okay, okay this or that gift exchanges. Would you rather do a secret Santa or a white elephant, aka Yankee Swap?
00:03:07
Speaker
Okay, I like secret Santa because you can get a nice, like personalized, thoughtful gift for somebody. But I think I'd have to go with a white elephant or a Yankee Swap because you can just pick out more fun unique items and there's like a little less pressure on getting the perfect gift for somebody um i i like secret santa because i think it's fun getting someone a gift that you know they're gonna like but i think i gotta go with the white elephant yankee swap because i think that it's fun even if you get the worst i know it' you know the less desirable one it's still fun Yeah. You don't know what treasures you're going to open up or what dirty minds some people have. Yeah. I just, I never want to get like a fake lottery ticket because that would just ah break my heart. And I don't want to see anybody getting a fake lottery ticket. So can we just like ban those? That's a good point. Like let's not do, that's a mean gag gift. That's just mean.
00:04:07
Speaker
All right.
