Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida:    https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading comes to us from 2 chronicles Chapter 21, 2 Kings  Chapter 6: 8-23, and the Book of Obadiah. We will read about King Jehoram, King Jehoshaphat's son, who comes after Jehoshaphat as the next king of Judah. We will read that he marries the daughter of King Ahab of Israel and therefore leads Judah astray and is a bad king in Judah. We will read about God's judgment on him, that his insides will fall out, as a result of his bad behavior. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of being careful of the relationships we form, whether in friendship or in marriage, because we don't know just how far reaching the consequences of those relationships can reach, whether good or bad! God takes leading others astray very seriously. Jesus taught that it would be better for a millstone to be tied around someone's neck and drowned than for us to lead even ONE person astray! Kings of Judah and Israel were held responsible repeatedly for leading God's people astray. Jesus spoke about the fact that we will be known by our fruit. We cannot produce good fruit if we are not mindful of protecting our minds from sinful thoughts and behaviors, and we can be led astray by listening to or watching people we form relationships with, as we have seen multiple times in our reading. So let us be mindful of the relationships we form with people so we can be careful of not being led astray or of leading others astray from God.

Daily Bible Readings

00:00:31
Speaker
We are following along in the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley. And I don't know if she's a mama, but if she is, then I am wishing her a very happy Mother's Day today.
00:00:44
Speaker
And even if you are not a mama, you have a mama. So I hope that you have a fabulous Mother's Day with your mama today.

Women's Day Celebration Reflection

00:00:52
Speaker
i really liked what we did at the service yesterday when I was attending
00:01:00
Speaker
service yesterday. Sorry, my internet cut out there. So if it gets a little skippy there, I don't know what's going on there. I guess everybody's on the internet today. I've been having trouble, I think, with my router.
00:01:13
Speaker
So I really love what they did at my service yesterday when I was attending at the Messianic Jewish congregation where they honored all women, all girls. And it was really wonderful. they ah they served food there after the service and they had omelet stations and they brought flowers for every woman, every girl.
00:01:34
Speaker
because everybody ah will eventually potentially be a mother or we all have a mother anyways. So it was just really lovely for all women to be honored on this day of honoring mothers.

Technical Challenges and Counting the Omer

00:01:47
Speaker
So if you are following along on your daily commitment calendar, but ahead and get that out. Get your sticker or however you are marking off your calendar because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:02:01
Speaker
I wanted to ah explain yesterday, if you caught yesterday's episode, that my internet did what it was doing this morning here and it cut out. And ah whereas this morning where it cut out, it was brief and then it just, it picked up again with recording.
00:02:17
Speaker
Yesterday when I was recording my session, I was almost to the very end and it turned off and when it came back on it was converting my recording into a file so I would have had to have recorded a secondary file and it was so close to the end where all I was going to do was ah you know ask you about that if you feel God has lit your light and to click the light button I didn't bother it was late for me it was like 11 o'clock and I was like that recording is just fine
00:02:49
Speaker
and So I wanted to explain what happened in that sudden and abrupt cutoff yesterday. It was my internet. So if you are interested in obeying God and counting the Omer today, go ahead and repeat after me, and then you will also have counted the Omer.
00:03:08
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has set us apart by your commandments
00:03:24
Speaker
and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:03:30
Speaker
Today is the sixth day of the fourth week. Oh, this is yesterday's. Today is the,
00:03:42
Speaker
my goodness, where did it go?
00:03:47
Speaker
Well, I know how to count. So ah today is the seventh day of the fourth week and day 28, I have counted the Omer.
00:04:00
Speaker
Sorry about that guys. I thought I had everything ready to go there. I'm just having all kinds of trouble today, aren't I?
00:04:09
Speaker
Once again, proof that I am not perfect.
00:04:14
Speaker
and So thank you for counting the Omir with me. I love that God has set us apart from the rest of the world. And he does so by his commandments that we are to be in the world, but not of the world.

Genealogy in the Bible: Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Joram

00:04:30
Speaker
We are going to pick up in today's reading. And I tell you what, I was having a little bit of a hard time because I was trying to figure out who was related to who in today's reading.
00:04:41
Speaker
We know that at the moment, the ruler of Judah is King Jehoshaphat. And we're going to see that his son, Jehoram, comes into power.
00:04:54
Speaker
And over there in Israel, King Joram, which by the way, is a derivative of jehora Jehoram. So there's Joram and Jehoram.
00:05:07
Speaker
And it sounded like they were the same person for a minute. And they are not, they just simply are now intermarried. We are going to see that Jehoshaphat's son marries the daughter of Israel's King Ahab, who um was a daughter of Jezebel and King
00:05:31
Speaker
Ahab, I think, yes. And she leads to, be eventually, we will see that this woman that she he marries ah becomes queen in Judah for a while.
00:05:44
Speaker
So it it got rather confusing ah with who was related to who there for a minute. And I spent quite a bit of time this morning trying to figure all of that out. And so that will be part of our daily application, actually.
00:05:55
Speaker
So today's reading comes to us from 2 Chronicles, chapter 21, the book of Obadiah,
00:06:04
Speaker
2nd Kings chapter 6 verses 8 through 23. Our first section is entitled, The King Whose Insides Came Out.
00:06:19
Speaker
And this is 2nd Chronicles chapter 21. And as always, if you feel that God is leading you to... ah read more of his word if you are hungry for more of God's word and you're looking for additional details which you feel that there may be behind our story that I have not included or that are not included in and Karen Henley's ah version of the Bible, then by all means, always look that up. That's why I give you the chapters.
00:06:47
Speaker
And if you didn't catch it by a word, I always list it in the description so that if you are hungry for more of what is going on in our story and want to dig deeper, you are always welcome and encouraged to check out the chapters of where our reading came from.
00:07:04
Speaker
Oftentimes, in order to present daily application or to present greater understanding of God's Word, I go and read the full version of what is going on to try to see if there is something that will ah give us a little more insight as to what is going on or why.
00:07:22
Speaker
So if you are also feeling led and hungry by God's Spirit to seek out more, I love that and by all means do that.
00:07:32
Speaker
So this first section is 2 Chronicles chapter 21, and it's the king whose insides came out.

King Jehoram's Reign and Elijah's Prophecy

00:07:41
Speaker
Sometime later, King Jehoshaphat died. His son Jehoram became the next king of Judah. But Jehoram married the daughter of Israel's King Ahab.
00:07:54
Speaker
Jehoram was a bad king, just like the kings of Israel. He sinned and he led God's people in Judah to sin.
00:08:04
Speaker
Now the king of Edom turned against Jehoram, so Jehoram took his army to fight Edom.
00:08:13
Speaker
Edom's army got in a circle around Jehoram's army, but Jehoram and his army got away during the night. Then one day Jehoram got a letter from Elijah.
00:08:24
Speaker
Yes, Elijah. And the letter told what God said to Jehoram.
00:08:31
Speaker
You are not like your father, Jehoshaphat. Instead, you are like Ahab. You have led your people to sin. And now God is going to bring trouble to the people of Judah.
00:08:44
Speaker
He will bring terrible trouble to your family. You will get sick and you will be so sick that your insides will come out.
00:08:57
Speaker
Soon God sent armies, enemy armies, against Jehoram, and they came into Judah to fight. They took everything in Jehoram's palace.
00:09:09
Speaker
They even took Jehoram's family. They only left his youngest son. His name was Ahaziah.
00:09:20
Speaker
Now King Jehoram got sick, just like Elijah had said. He had lots of pain. His insides came out and he died.
00:09:32
Speaker
Nobody was sorry he had died. So they didn't build a fire to show he was great. And they did put his body in a grave, but it was not with the other kings.
00:09:44
Speaker
Jehoram's son Ahaziah became the next king of Judah.

Obadiah's Prophecy Against Edom

00:09:50
Speaker
And about that time, Obadiah the prophet spoke and he told what God said about the land of Edom.
00:09:59
Speaker
I want to interject here a little bit in our story. The land of Edom, the Edomites were Esau's descendants. You may remember that Jacob had his 12 sons and that his 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Israel.
00:10:17
Speaker
And you may remember that he had a twin brother named Esau, whom Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. And then Jacob also ah tricked their father Isaac into a blessing.
00:10:32
Speaker
And Esau is now, his descendants are the Edomites. And he is going to receive his family. Esau is long since dead and gone.
00:10:43
Speaker
But the kingdom of Edom is receiving judgment from God. And this comes to us from the book of Obadiah. And that is our next reading.
00:10:55
Speaker
Obadiah is a one chapter book. He was a prophet. And so now he is giving bad news for Edom. Here's what God showed Obadiah.
00:11:07
Speaker
Edom, you will not be important. Nations will hate you. You are proud. You believed a lie.
00:11:19
Speaker
You live in the rocks up high in the mountains and you say that nobody can bring you down. You may fly like an eagle. You may have your nest up in the stars, but I will bring you down from there, says God.
00:11:36
Speaker
What if robbers came to you? And what if they came at night? They would only take what they wanted. And what if people came to pick your grapes? They would leave some on the vine.
00:11:49
Speaker
But all your riches will be taken away. Your friends will trick you. They will be stronger than you. They will plan to trap you.
00:12:00
Speaker
And you won't even know it. I will get rid of Edom's wise men, says God. You hurt others.
00:12:13
Speaker
So you will be torn down forever. You just stood there while enemies took riches from God's people. You shouldn't look down on God's people when they are in trouble.
00:12:26
Speaker
You should not be happy when bad things happen to them.
00:12:31
Speaker
God's day is coming close for everyone. And whatever you did will be done to you. You will get paid back for what you did.
00:12:42
Speaker
But on Zion Mountain, my people will be saved. It will be a special place, good and right. And it will belong to my people.
00:12:54
Speaker
My people will be like a fire. But Edom will be like dry grass. The fire will burn the dry grass. And no one from Edom will be left, says God.

Elisha's Miracles and Peace with Aram

00:13:13
Speaker
our so Our last section is entitled, What Elisha Saw, from 2 Kings 6, verses 8 through 23. Now the king of Aram went out to fight against Israel, and he talked to his army officers.
00:13:29
Speaker
Then he said, We'll camp at this place. But Elisha told King Joram of Israel where Aram's army was. And he said, don't go there.
00:13:42
Speaker
That's where the enemy army is camped. Every time Aram's army moved, Elisha knew where they went. And then he would tell King Joram. The king of Aram got very angry and he talked to his officers about it.
00:13:57
Speaker
Which of you is telling King Joram where we are? None of us, said one officer. It's Elisha who is telling where we are.
00:14:08
Speaker
he even tells King Joram what you say in your bedroom. Then go find Elisha, said the king of Aram, and I'm going to catch him. So his men found out where Elisha was.
00:14:22
Speaker
Then Aram's king sent out lots of men and they rode out with horses and chariots and they went to get Elisha. It was night when they got to where Elisha was, so they got into a circle around the city.
00:14:38
Speaker
Elisha's helper, Gehazi, got up early the next day. He looked out, and he saw the army around the city. He saw the horses and chariots.
00:14:51
Speaker
What are we going to do? he called to Elisha. Don't be scared, said Elisha. Our army is bigger than theirs.
00:15:03
Speaker
Then Elisha prayed. He said, God, let Gehazi see.
00:15:12
Speaker
So God let Gehazi see. he looked out and he saw another army all over the hills. It was an army of horses and chariots of fire.
00:15:29
Speaker
The army of Aram began to come toward the city and Elisha prayed to God. He said, God, please make them so they can't see. So God took away their sight.
00:15:42
Speaker
Then Elisha went to the army and he said, This isn't the road you are looking for. This isn't the city you are looking for. will take you there.
00:15:56
Speaker
Then Elisha led them all the way to Samaria. Elisha prayed again, God, now let them see.
00:16:07
Speaker
So God made them see again, and they saw that they were in the city of Samaria. Joram, the king of Israel, was in Samaria, and he saw the enemy army in his city.
00:16:20
Speaker
Should I kill them? He asked Elisha. no said Elijah. Give them food and water. Let them eat and drink.
00:16:31
Speaker
Then send them back to their king.
00:16:36
Speaker
So King Joram made a big dinner and the enemy army ate and drank. And then Joram sent them back to their king. And after that, the army of Aram stopped fighting Israel.
00:16:49
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Significance of God's Miracles

00:16:53
Speaker
Why, every single day, God has given us a record of his amazing things that he has done. I am so thankful that these events were recorded.
00:17:08
Speaker
and you know, God did many more things in people's lives that I'm sure are not recorded. We are told even Jesus did so many things while he was among us that it's written that it would not, that it would be so many books that it would fill the world with all the things that Jesus did.
00:17:27
Speaker
If Jesus just did that many, imagine how many more our Heavenly Father has done and we just don't even know it. He performs miracles for people all the time.
00:17:40
Speaker
He is not the God of the past. He is the God of now, of the living. He is not the God of the dead. He is the God of the living.
00:17:50
Speaker
Jesus confirmed that for us. So I just wanted to point that out, that I would just find that every single day is just so amazing that nothing we know is impossible or too much for our amazing God.
00:18:07
Speaker
He is not just one of many gods. He is the only God. He is the one who created us and the universe and the world. And he called his people to be his people.
00:18:21
Speaker
And he sent his son to save us, to save you, because he loves us. And he does all these amazing things. And I'm so glad that we have a record of what we do have a record of so that we can read about these things.

Godly Relationships and Influences

00:18:39
Speaker
So we see here that King Jehoshaphat died and his son Jehoram became the next king of Judah. And he married the daughter of Israel's King Ahab.
00:18:53
Speaker
And if you remember, ah Ahab's son was just after Ahab died. Let's see.
00:19:09
Speaker
Ahab had his son Ahaziah. And then Ahaziah, he died when he had sustained an injury.
00:19:20
Speaker
And King Ahaziah did not have a son, so his brother Joram became the next king. And so now, and so King Ahaziah would have been brother
00:19:36
Speaker
of Ahaziah. of Jehoram's wife. Jehoram's wife is Atalia.
00:19:50
Speaker
And we will see her in the coming up in the future as well. So we see that Judah is now intermarrying with Israel. And what happened immediately is that now we're going to have a succession of bad kings in Judah.
00:20:09
Speaker
They are going to lead the people into sin. so Our daily application is that we need to be careful of the relationships that we form because it can have long-lasting consequences that we will not even be aware of.
00:20:36
Speaker
I was going to see something else in here as well.
00:20:45
Speaker
And they were going to be leading Judah's people astray into worshiping idols. And we're going to see that ah they didn't even they didn't last very long as kings because God was going to bring judgment on them.
00:21:02
Speaker
There was so much going on in today's story. We even had a letter from Elijah. Now, ah that can be a little bit confusing because we know that God already took Elijah.
00:21:14
Speaker
So we're not entirely certain about the chronology of events. And we know that Karen Henley has written this Bible chronologically. And so it can be a little confusing as to when the letter from Elijah was written to King Jehoram.
00:21:30
Speaker
but we do know that it was accurate because we read that the king's insides, he developed an intestinal disease and he just got worse and worse until it says in the big Bible that his intestines fell out and that's his insides coming out.
00:21:50
Speaker
Your intestines are inside um your of your body. They're not on the outside. So we see God's divine judgment over the people who'd fail to serve him and who lead people astray.
00:22:05
Speaker
So leading other people astray is a very serious crime in God's eyes. And we we see in the New Testament that Jesus confirms this and says that those who are leaders, if they have a great responsibility and that if they should lead even one person astray,
00:22:28
Speaker
That let's see what it says. I forgot to look that up. They are not to even lead one person astray that it would be better for them. um I'm going to pause this.
00:22:42
Speaker
We have in Matthew 18, verse six, where Jesus says, whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
00:23:00
Speaker
It is very serious that when we are teaching others that we are not to lead people astray. And this is exactly what Israel's and Judah's kings are doing.
00:23:13
Speaker
And so we need to be careful about the relationships that we form. That's part of making sure that we protect what goes into our mind, because remember, sin starts in the mind.
00:23:25
Speaker
So we have to protect what we see, we have to protect what we hear, so that we don't become infected. and start sinning, and then by our example, lead others astray.
00:23:37
Speaker
We are instead supposed to be the light of the world so that others may see our good works, that may see God through us, and that they may come to believe.
00:23:49
Speaker
Our actions can help people come to the Lord or cause them to sin. And it is not okay for us to lead others into sin, into temptation.
00:24:03
Speaker
So it is very important that we are mindful about the relationships that we form, whether it's in friendship or in marriage, and to be careful so that we do not lead others astray by our actions.
00:24:19
Speaker
We are told that we will be known by our fruit and the fruit that we produce is is how we can tell ah whether people are good or bad.
00:24:30
Speaker
Jesus says that you can tell whether a fruit is good whether a tree is good by its
00:24:41
Speaker
In Luke 6 verses 43 through 45, we read, For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
00:24:53
Speaker
For every tree is known by its own fruit.
00:24:59
Speaker
For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good.
00:25:09
Speaker
And an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart does the mouth speak. Out of the mouth comes the overflow of the heart.
00:25:22
Speaker
And we've mentioned that recently too. So we need to be careful because this all starts with protecting our mind by what we hear and by what we see. by And that starts, we've spoke before, about the relationships that we form.
00:25:40
Speaker
that we need to be sure that we are forming relationships that are godly so that we can keep away from s sin so that we do not influence others to sin much in the way that the kings of Israel and Judah are doing and what that's what we are seeing.
00:25:57
Speaker
So that is our daily application today, to be mindful of our relationships that we are forming. And if you are finding that you have a relationship that is not beneficial, then we need to be sure that we are putting God as the most important one in our lives and that we not continue in these relationships.
00:26:16
Speaker
Now, if we are already married, um that is ah an entirely different topic. and And I don't have time to go into all of that. ah But in the New Testament, it says that if we are married to say an unbeliever, it doesn't mean that the unbeliever is doing bad things.
00:26:32
Speaker
um But if we need to examine and put God first. And so I don't wanna go too much into that, but to be mindful of relationships before they become marriage and before ah they get any deeper.
00:26:48
Speaker
Because we see that when we married people who are doing bad things, then it spreads. It spreads throughout the family. So it is very important that we be careful of who we marry.
