Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading includes the Book of Hosea Chapters 1-8. Today we will read about God's great sadness over His people in Israel refusing to turn back to Him and stop sinning. As a result, God will bring discipline to Israel, removing the people from the land, and sending them to the Assyrians. But there is hope! The time of God's discipline will come to and end! Judah and Israel will once again become one nation and God will call even those people who were once not His people, HIS people (the Gentiles!) "He will give us new life after two days. He will bring us back to Him on the third day." In our discussion for daily application we will be reminded that God delights in mercy, as we spoke about yesterday from Hosea 6:6, rather than sacrifice, and that God delights in us having knowledge of Him more than burnt offerings. We will be encouraged, as we read today, to really learn to know God.  The more we learn and know about God the more we come to realize how much He loves us and then the more we come to love Him! Let us spread the news to everyone we meet that God loves them SO MUCH! He wants EVERYONE to come to Him! It is NEVER too late to come to Him!

Today is the second day of the sixth week and day 37.
00:01:54
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:01:58
Speaker
I will have that link for where I am reading our daily counting of the Omer down in the description below.

Reading and Discussing Hosea

00:02:06
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be reading from the book of Hosea.
00:02:10
Speaker
And we read yeah we read yesterday that ah Hosea was also a prophet during the time ah that Jonah was a prophet.
00:02:23
Speaker
And let's see, was going to see, ah ah sometimes I like to read the end of that.
00:02:29
Speaker
I don't know where that was, but I know we said we saw that. And ah today today's we're going to cover a number of chapters, Hosea 1 all the way through Hosea 8.
00:02:41
Speaker
So Hosea chapters 1 through 8. Hosea is often quoted even in the New Testament because this is prophecy concerning both the ah
00:02:55
Speaker
end of Israel as its own nation and being taken captive by the Assyrians, which happens approximately 25 years after Hosea writes.
00:03:08
Speaker
And then it also gives us prophecy for the coming of Jesus. So keep your ears open for things that pertain to Jesus. And it also speaks about the fact that there will be the Gentile church where it will say, where he will say, I should say, um that he will, he refers to us as the people who are not his people will become his people.
00:03:34
Speaker
That's you and me. We have been grafted in. Hosea prophesied about that over 700 years before Jesus came. So I wanted to give us a little bit of timeline as to where we are where we are reading in time.

Transition to New Testament

00:03:50
Speaker
So we are getting closer to the New Testament. We only have 700 more years to go. And we will begin that in August. So let's see, May, June, July, August, we have three months.
00:04:04
Speaker
We will begin that on August 10th. And that's where we start the New Testament. So look how far we're we're getting. If you have the video there, ah we are getting close to halfway through.
00:04:19
Speaker
Can you believe that? We're getting close to being halfway through both the year and the reading of the Bible here. oh I just can't believe it. I don't know where this year is going.
00:04:32
Speaker
It's going day by day, isn't it?
00:04:36
Speaker
Well, let's go ahead and get going because we have a lot in here today.

Symbolism in Hosea's Family

00:04:43
Speaker
Our first section is entitled Three Babies.
00:04:48
Speaker
Hosea was another prophet who worked for God. He began telling God's words when Jeroboam II was Israel's king. Oh, that's what I was looking for earlier.
00:05:01
Speaker
I didn't realize it was part of today's reading. God told Hosea, My people don't obey me. They don't stay with me. So marry a woman who won't stay with you.
00:05:14
Speaker
She will be like my people. So Hosea married a woman named Gomer, and they had a baby boy. Name your baby Jezreel, said God.
00:05:27
Speaker
A king of Israel killed people in Jezreel Valley, so I will put an end to Israel there.
00:05:35
Speaker
Sometime later, Hosea and Gomer had a baby girl. God said, name your baby not loved. I'm not going to show my love to Israel anymore, but I will show my love to Judah.
00:05:52
Speaker
I will save Judah. I will not save them by bows and arrows. I will not save them by swords and fights. I will not save them by horses and riders.
00:06:05
Speaker
I am their God, the Lord, and I will save them by myself.
00:06:11
Speaker
Then Hosea and Gomer had another baby boy. And God said, The name of this baby will be not my people. The people in Israel are not my people anymore.
00:06:26
Speaker
I am not their God. But Judah and Israel will come together again. Then the people will be called children of the living God. I will place my people in the land and help them grow.
00:06:41
Speaker
I will love the one I called not loved. To those I called not my people, I will say, now you are my people. Then they will tell me that I am their God.

Symbolism of God's Love

00:06:57
Speaker
Then God told Hosea, love your wife. Love her even though she loves other men. Love her like I love my people. I love them even though they love other gods.
00:07:14
Speaker
So Hosea told his wife, you will live with me. You must not love other men. Hosea said, the people of Israel will lose their king.
00:07:27
Speaker
They will go many days without a king. Then they will come to look for God again. They'll come back to his goodness. In the last days.
00:07:41
Speaker
The bad things Israel did.

Israel's Sins and Hope

00:07:44
Speaker
Hosea verses 4 through 6. Hear what God says against Israel. No one in the land keeps promises.
00:07:54
Speaker
No one knows that I am God. People lie, kill, and steal. They leave their husbands and wives. So the land dries up.
00:08:06
Speaker
Birds, fish, and landant land animals die. The people's sins are like food to the priests. They are glad to see people do wrong.
00:08:18
Speaker
I will bring trouble to the priests and the people for what they have done.
00:08:23
Speaker
The people ask their questions to an idol made of wood. They worship idols under the shady oak trees. The people of Israel don't care about me.
00:08:35
Speaker
They are like a cow that won't go where you lead. So how can I lead them to green fields? How can they be my sheep? Israel and Judah saw that they were in trouble.
00:08:48
Speaker
They asked other kings to help them. But other kings can't help. So I will be like a lion to Israel and Judah. I will take them away.
00:09:01
Speaker
There will be no one to save them. Then I will wait for them to say they have done wrong. They will feel so bad. They will look for me.
00:09:13
Speaker
Come, said Hosea, let's go back to God. He broke us into pieces, but he will make us well. He will give us new life after two days.
00:09:27
Speaker
He will bring us back to him on the third day. Then we can live with him. So let's all learn to know God. He will come to us.
00:09:38
Speaker
It will be like spring rain coming to the water to water the ground.
00:09:45
Speaker
Hosea chapter 7 through 8. And this is entitled, Their Hearts Are Like Hot Ovens.
00:09:54
Speaker
God says to his people, I start to make Israel well again, but then i see their sins. They lie and take things. They don't know that I remember the bad things they do.
00:10:09
Speaker
The king has a party. The princes get drunk. Then they begin to make fun of people. Their hearts are like hot ovens. They plan to sin.
00:10:22
Speaker
My people in Israel are of no use. They're like a pancake that doesn't get turned over. People from other lands take their power, but they don't know it.
00:10:34
Speaker
Their hair is getting gray, but they don't see it. Their pride shows bad things about them, but after all this, they still don't turn back to God.
00:10:48
Speaker
My people in Israel are like silly doves. It is easy to trick them. They don't think. They fly around calling other lands to come help them.
00:11:00
Speaker
But I will catch them. I want to save them. But they tell lies about me. Now Israel calls for my help.
00:11:13
Speaker
The people say that I am their God. But they don't want to do what is good. They make idols with their silver and gold. Throw away your gold cow idol, Israel.
00:11:26
Speaker
It is not God. Break it into pieces.
00:11:32
Speaker
That is the end of our reading today.

Compassion and Unfaithfulness

00:11:41
Speaker
This reading is so sad.
00:11:45
Speaker
We have been speaking about God's great compassion and like how his great love for people, for his people, for all people. And yet here we see that God is so sad.
00:11:58
Speaker
He says no matter what he does, people won't stop turning away from him.
00:12:06
Speaker
He's asked Hosea to take a wife that is like Israel
00:12:14
Speaker
a wife that will not be faithful to him. And he has told Hosea to name his children in the way that he will be bringing judgment.
00:12:26
Speaker
Now in our version, it says that the daughter will be named not loved. However, in the big Bible, in my version,
00:12:45
Speaker
God actually says the name
00:12:49
Speaker
is does not have compassion.
00:12:54
Speaker
And I thought that was very important because that's exactly what we've been talking about. It's God's great compassion.
00:13:06
Speaker
Let's see.
00:13:11
Speaker
She conceived again and bore a daughter. And he said, God said to him, name her Lo-Ruhamah.
00:13:23
Speaker
Lo-Ruhamah, for I no longer will have compassion on the house of Israel.
00:13:31
Speaker
And that means shown no compassion.
00:13:38
Speaker
So God is not going to show compassion on Israel because Israel is turning away from God consistently. No matter what, there's no one to be found who is calling on and worshiping God.
00:13:54
Speaker
Yesterday we mentioned as well ah in our discussion that when we read about Jonah, that God desires mercy more than sacrifice.

Mercy over Sacrifice

00:14:10
Speaker
And I didn't know where that was written, but that's actually written in Hosea chapter six, verse six. And he says, for I delight
00:14:21
Speaker
in mercy. And the word can be translated as covenant love or mercy for I delight in mercy and not sacrifice knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
00:14:36
Speaker
So i always like to look up a word for definition because a lot of times you can understand a word better when you look it up. And I like to get the full strength behind a word.
00:14:49
Speaker
So when I look up knowledge on dictionary.com, it says, acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles as from study or investigation.
00:15:02
Speaker
So God wants us to study and know him, not just to read about him, but to study and know him. And that's what we have said is so important about this event is that it's not just about reading the Bible every day and saying, okay, I read it or I heard it.
00:15:20
Speaker
It's the fact that we want to be able to understand what we are reading and to see that God has daily application in our lives every single day. we are seeing that he does that.
00:15:30
Speaker
And we are learning more about who God is and how much he loves us. And we're learning how to apply his word every day It says in Hosea 6, chapter 6, that God desires that.
00:15:46
Speaker
He says, I delight. God is delighting in this. He delights in mercy, not sacrifice. He wants us to be merciful.
00:15:57
Speaker
God is merciful. He wants, he desires, he delights in knowledge of him more than burnt offerings.
00:16:07
Speaker
And so here today, we're we're seeing that he is so sad. He's going to turn his back on Israel and he's going to send them off to the Assyrians, which is exactly what happened in about 22 years later, 25 years later.
00:16:24
Speaker
And then 700 years later, he is telling them, he is giving us promise because our God is so faithful. He doesn't just issue promises. ah discipline here.
00:16:36
Speaker
He is telling them exactly how long it will last in in terms of that that it will not in number of years there, but he was telling us and them that it will come to an end and it won't just be Israel coming back to him.
00:16:52
Speaker
He's going to call the whole world to him. He will call ah people who are not his people. He says, I will place my people in the land and help them grow. He's going to bring Israel back to his to their nation.
00:17:08
Speaker
And that's exactly what he's been doing. He's been calling the people back to Israel. And he says, I will love the one i called not loved. This is very important because I have actually heard it taught and A pastor has told me before that they no longer believe that the Jewish people are God's chosen people, that now it is the Christians who are God's chosen people, and that they basically forfeited that by turning away from him and not accepting Jesus as the Messiah.
00:17:42
Speaker
And that is not so. God said that this would be the case, that they are still his people. I will place my people in the land and help them grow. I will love the one I called not loved and to those I called not my people, which is you and me. We were not his people.
00:18:02
Speaker
I will say now you are my people and they will tell me that I am their God. He is our God. We have been grafted in to the vine.
00:18:15
Speaker
And this is so important to see God's continuing compassion, his plan. God has a plan. He is working everything together for good. He knew what would happen and he set this up so that we would be able to be saved by him in his great love and his great compassion.

Knowing and Loving God

00:18:38
Speaker
So our daily application is to love our God with all of our hearts, all of our mind, all of our soul to know him, not just to read about him, but to study him, to be, uh, and to have knowledge of him.
00:18:53
Speaker
And the more we know about him, the more we can love him. There is just more to love. The more we know about him to make him the most important one.
00:19:05
Speaker
Here we have, ah did you see the, did you hear the the the reference to Jesus being born as well? And or dying on the cross? Did you hear that? It says, he will give us, he broke us into pieces, but he will make us well.
00:19:22
Speaker
He will give us new life. God will give us new life. And he has done that. After two days, he will bring us back to him on the third day.
00:19:35
Speaker
Then we can live with him. So let's all learn to know God. Let's really learn to know him. He will come to us and it will be like spring rain coming to water the ground.
00:19:50
Speaker
Today's application for our daily application for today is let's really learn to know God. When we start, when we make a new friend or when we date somebody, when we get older, we really want to get to know them. We just want to love everything about them.
00:20:09
Speaker
And it's like we can never know everything about a person. we We think we know people really well, but there are always some things that we just don't know. And there will always be things we don't know about God.
00:20:21
Speaker
But God wants us to really know him. He knows us. He knows our hearts. Let's take the time to want to really know God every day.
00:20:37
Speaker
And it says it will be like spring rain coming to water the ground. Jesus tells us that he has springs of living water that will flow from him. That's the Holy Spirit.
00:20:52
Speaker
Well, I hope that you have found today's reading just really lighting up your light inside today. And let's do our best to spread the word about reading God's word so that other people will really get to know God.
00:21:07
Speaker
That's what God is looking for. He delights in us to know him. And he delights in mercy. And as we spoke about yesterday, he wants everybody to come to him, not wanting anybody to perish.
00:21:20
Speaker
And that's why he sent us his son that we spoke about in prophecy. 700 years before Jesus came, Hosea said what it was going to be like.
00:21:31
Speaker
And let's tell people about that, how much God loves them, that he wants them to know him the way he knows us.

Spreading God's Love and Prophecy

00:21:41
Speaker
Let's spread the word about reading God's word.
00:21:44
Speaker
Let's click that light button so that other people can see our light and hear that message that is so important for everybody in the world to know. God says even atthe in the days of judgment, his goal is to bring people to him, come to him.
00:22:02
Speaker
It's not too late. It's never too late. God is calling all of us. God is calling you if you don't know him yet. Learn about God. Trust in him.
00:22:14
Speaker
He is worthwhile of your time. He is so faithful and compassionate and loving. I just can't say it enough. I just i just love God. I'm so thankful for his great compassion.
00:22:28
Speaker
So thank you, and I hope everybody has a fantastic rest of your day today. And we'll be here again tomorrow for our daily reading and counting of the Omer.
