Today's reading comes to us from 2 Kings Chapter 19 and 20:1-11 and Isaiah Chapter 37 and 38:1-20.  Today we will read about King Hezekiah of Judah praying to God and asking Him to defend His holy name against the insults of the king of Assyria. We will hear about God's answer, that because King Hezekiah prayed to God, God will send the rude and lying king back to his own country and that He will defend His people. God then sent His Angel (Jesus!) to kill 185,000 army men of Assyria! God is so awesome!!! We will then see King Hezekiah facing terminal illness and Isaiah telling him that God has said Hezekiah will die. We will see King Hezekiah pray to God, asking God to remember that he has always tried to do what is right. God answered Hezekiah's prayer and sent Isaiah back to Hezekiah to deliver the message as well as a sign- God would turn back the clock by 10 hours, at Hezekiah's choice. We will see Hezekiah giving glory to God for healing him and in his wisdom giving glory to God for allowing him to go through the experience, since going through the trouble was for Hezekiah's benefit! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God letting us go through our own troubles for our own benefit, as well, and that God wants us to come to Him to ask Him for His help. It was because Hezekiah prayed that God granted his requests. We need to be sure and take EVERYTHING to the Lord in prayer and look at the troubles we are going through with a positive eye, acknowledging that God is going to work good into everything, even though it looks bad. Our God is so loving, gracious, kind, and giving. He wants us to come to Him. How many times have we missed out on God answering a prayer because we simply did pray? Let's bring everything to God! He WANTS us to!

Speaker
Today we are going to finish that story about King Hezekiah and we are going to see what happens when he is so upset at the threats that the king of Assyria is making that he is trying to discourage the people of Judah from believing in God.

Hezekiah Seeks God's Guidance

00:01:07
Speaker
Yesterday we talked about standing firm in what we believe and today we're going to see the conclusion of this magnificent story. I love seeing what God does for us, don't you?
00:01:19
Speaker
We have a wonderful lesson today. I can't wait to get into it for our daily application.
00:01:28
Speaker
Today's reading comes to us from 2 Kings chapter 19 Isaiah chapter 37 and Isaiah chapter 38, 1 through 20 and 2 Kings chapter 20 verses 1 through 11. one through twenty and second kings chapter twenty verses one through eleven
00:01:48
Speaker
And what I've noticed, I'd never noticed this before because i haven't read the whole Bible either, is that the accounts between 2 Kings and Isaiah are almost word for word.

God's Promise and Prophecy

00:02:00
Speaker
It's really interesting.
00:02:04
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, God Sends His Angel to Fight. Woo!
00:02:13
Speaker
That's a, yeah I'm trying to think of the word. It it escapes me at the moment. A spoiler alert right there, isn't it? ah God sends his angel to fight. So as we left off yesterday, Hezekiah's men went back to him and they were so upset and they tore their clothes and they told Hezekiah what the men of Assyria had said.
00:02:34
Speaker
to Today says King Hezekiah was upset. He tore his clothes too. He put on clothes made of old sackcloth and he went to God's worship house.
00:02:46
Speaker
Then he sent his leaders and priests to Isaiah. Here is what Hezekiah says, they told Isaiah. This is a day of trouble.
00:02:57
Speaker
Maybe God will hear what the men of Assyria said. They made fun of God. Maybe he will pay them back for that. Go back to King Hezekiah, said Isaiah, and tell him that God says not to be scared.
00:03:13
Speaker
The men of Assyria lied about God. Remember we talked about that yesterday?
00:03:21
Speaker
So their king is going to get a message. God will make him go back to his country and he will be killed there. Then the king of Assyria got a message, and it said that the army of Egypt was coming to fight him.
00:03:36
Speaker
So he sent a letter to Hezekiah. The letter said, Don't let your God lie to you. He says Assyria won't take over Jerusalem. But the gods of other lands couldn't save them.
00:03:50
Speaker
King Hezekiah got the letter. He read it. And then he took it to the worship house. He laid it out before God, and then he prayed. Lord God, you are the only God in the world.
00:04:04
Speaker
You made all of space. Listen, God. You made all of the earth. Open your eyes and see. Listen to the bad things the king of Assyria says about you.
00:04:19
Speaker
It's true that the people of Assyria tore up their lands. Other lands, said Hezekiah. But their gods were only wood and rock. Men made them.
00:04:30
Speaker
Now save us, God, and then everyone in the world will know that you are the only God. After Hezekiah prayed, Isaiah sent a message to him.
00:04:44
Speaker
God says he heard your prayer. And here's what he says against the king of Assyria. The people of Jerusalem laugh at you. They make fun of you as you run away.
00:04:57
Speaker
"'Who have you said bad things about? "'Who did you shout against? "'You are acting as if you are the best, "'but you have come against the Holy One. "'But I know about you. "'I know when you go places. "'I know how angry you are at me. "'You talk against me, "'and I have heard your rude talk.
00:05:20
Speaker
"'So I will make you go back the same way you came.' Here is a sign for you, Hezekiah. This year you will eat whatever you can find. Next year you will eat what grows from that.
00:05:34
Speaker
But the next year you will plant seeds. You will plant crops. You will pick crops. You will plant grape fields. You will eat the fruit.
00:05:45
Speaker
The land of Judah will grow. People will be left here. God wants to do this.

Hezekiah's Illness and Recovery

00:05:52
Speaker
He will work at it until it is done. Here is what he says about Assyria's king.
00:06:00
Speaker
He won't come into this city. He won't even shoot an arrow here. He won't fight against it. He will go back the same way he came, says God.
00:06:12
Speaker
I will stand up for this city. I will save it. That night, God's angel, remember that's Jesus, killed 185,000 army men from Assyria.
00:06:29
Speaker
and the next morning, the rest of them got up and they saw all those dead bodies. So Assyria's king took his army home and he stayed there. Woo!
00:06:41
Speaker
Yay, God! I told you it was a good one.
00:06:47
Speaker
2 Kings 20 1-11 and Isaiah 38 1-20 A shadow moves backward.
00:06:59
Speaker
King Hezekiah got sick. He was dying. Isaiah went to see him. And Isaiah said, Here's what God says. Get everything ready.
00:07:10
Speaker
You won't get well. You're going to die. Hezekiah turned to the wall and he prayed, "'God, remember how I have done what was right.
00:07:23
Speaker
I kept obeying you no matter what.' Hezekiah cried. Isaiah was leaving when God spoke to him. "'Go back to Hezekiah. Tell him that I heard his prayer.
00:07:37
Speaker
I saw him cry. I will make him

Power of Prayer and Faith

00:07:40
Speaker
well.' I will let him live fifteen more years. I will save him and this city from Assyria.
00:07:49
Speaker
So Isaiah told God's words to Hezekiah. Is there a sign to show me that this is true? asked Hezekiah. This will be the sign, said Isaiah.
00:08:02
Speaker
The shadow on the stairs will move ten steps. This is the way that they kept in time. It was called the clock of Ahaz. Do you want the shadow to move forward or go backward?
00:08:18
Speaker
It's easy for the shadow to move forward, said Hezekiah. So make it go back 10 steps. So Isaiah prayed to God and then God made the shadow go back 10 steps.
00:08:33
Speaker
That means God turned time backwards. He rolled back time After King Hezekiah got well, he wrote about it.
00:08:44
Speaker
And here's what he wrote. I said, I'm in the best part of my life. Do I have to die? i cried like a dove.
00:08:56
Speaker
My eyes were not strong anymore. I looked up to the sky. i am upset. God, come and help me. God has talked to me and I will let him be the greatest all my life.
00:09:11
Speaker
And I'll do it because I've had this trouble. You made me well again, God. You let me live. It was for my good that I had such hard times.
00:09:24
Speaker
You showed me your love. You hid all my sins. God will save me and we'll sing and make music in the worship house. We'll sing and make music all our lives.
00:09:39
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:44
Speaker
Oh my gosh, that is, isn't that wonderful?
00:09:50
Speaker
God is so gracious, so loving, so merciful, so powerful. Did you see how King Hezekiah recognized that God allowed him to have trouble?
00:10:06
Speaker
He says, I'll do it. He says, God has talked to me and I will let him be the greatest all my life. And I will do it because i have had this trouble. God works good into everything.
00:10:19
Speaker
He allows things to happen, to give us the opportunity to come to him because he wants us to come to him. He wants us to look to him and he wants us to pray to him.
00:10:33
Speaker
He acknowledges, it was for my good that I had such hard times. How wonderful of King Hezekiah to acknowledge and have wisdom to see that it was good for him to experience this experience, to go through this event with God.
00:10:51
Speaker
And it's the same thing for when the Assyrian kings ah king came against him and was belittling God and speaking rudely about him. Did you catch it that it says, God says he heard his prayer and it is because he prayed.
00:11:09
Speaker
that God answered him and took care of that army by killing, sending his own angel, Jesus, to kill 185,000 men. It doesn't that God sent his entire angelic army. It says, night, God's angel killed 185,000 army men from Assyria. sent sent Jesus.
00:11:28
Speaker
that night god's angel killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand army men from assyria hudson one he sent jesus Isn't that amazing?
00:11:40
Speaker
In the past, we have seen where the army leader, I can't remember his name, saw an entire heavenly army fighting a battle ahead of them.
00:11:52
Speaker
And they didn't have to do anything. But in this instance, God sent one. and he killed 185,000.
00:12:03
Speaker
And it says that when Hezekiah was sick and Isaiah had told him, God had told him he would die and Hezekiah prayed. And it says that God heard him.
00:12:15
Speaker
Tell him that I heard him prayer, heard his prayer. And I saw him cry and I will make him well. Had Hezekiah not prayed and not gone to God, he would not have been made well.
00:12:30
Speaker
How many times have we missed out on God's amazing provision and blessing upon us because we simply didn't ask?
00:12:41
Speaker
Our daily application today is that we need to take everything to God because God wants us to come to him in prayer. He wants us to be relying on him. I read the ah the big version and I just absolutely loved and some of the small details that were included in it.
00:13:02
Speaker
And I'm going to give us that. Let's see. We had he we were in 2 Kings chapter 19, verse 20.
00:13:14
Speaker
verse twenty
00:13:16
Speaker
and this is confirmation for what i'm telling you that ah that this is how we know that our daily application is that god wants us to come to him and that we will miss out on things happening if we don't pray to him and ask him for things this is when uh hezekiah had sent word to isaiah And then Isaiah in chapter 20, mean, I'm sorry, 2 Kings chapter 19, verse 20 says, Then Isaiah, son of Amos, sent word to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Because you prayed to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria, I have heard you.
00:14:04
Speaker
Because you prayed to me, That is very important. I've heard people teach and say, we can never know why God does things.
00:14:15
Speaker
I disagree. God tells us why many times God tells us why he does things all the time. He tells us why. And then in verse, ah in chapter Kings, in second Kings chapter 20,
00:14:35
Speaker
When he was asking about when when Hezekiah was asking about ah his recovery and Isaiah told him that he would recover. he And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, what will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I should go up to the house of the Lord on the third day?
00:14:55
Speaker
There's our third day again. God is very symbolic. He gives us things in in ways so that we we can see.
00:15:07
Speaker
He would be healed and would be healed by the third day. We wouldn't have known that except for that little tiny blurb.
00:15:22
Speaker
And that was, that's all I wanted to point out in those, in those verses. Well, thank you for joining me today. i hope that you feel that God has lit your light and that you are encouraged to take everything to God.
00:15:36
Speaker
Right now I am taking my washing machine to God. You were with me during my refrigerator. My washing machine is not working properly. And since God uses everything for good, I'm going to look positively at it. I spent a great deal of time yesterday trying to decide which one I should i should get because it's not like I want to have to spend the money to buy another machine.
00:16:00
Speaker
I researched and I could not get parts for it. and I'm pretty sure i i am I don't know exactly which parts, but I called the company to eat to kind of get a feel for it. And they said, no, none of the major parts were available anymore.
00:16:15
Speaker
and um And so I finally, after after reading yesterday, and i'd said, you know what? God wants me to come to him with these things. So I've been asking God about which one he wants to wants me to have.
00:16:30
Speaker
I don't know if, I don't think I've ever shared this. I can't remember if I did or not, but God will definitely pick things out for you. and When I was getting married, I'm pretty sure I shared this before, that when I was preparing to be married and we were shopping for a wedding ring, yeah I prayed and I asked God to show me the perfect ring that he wanted me in.
00:16:53
Speaker
And he did. He picked it out. And he created these circumstances around it, such as it was on clearance, which I love. And it, um, and when I, I had found later on, i had a picture of a ring that I liked and I had had it for years prior to this time that we went shopping for a wedding ring.
00:17:17
Speaker
And my hand is very small, so like I can't wear a large ring. So it needs to be something smaller. It it just doesn't look right on my tiny little hand.
00:17:27
Speaker
I've had every jeweler tell me, that's not true, honey. You can have a giant ring. No, I don't want a giant ring on my hand that looks gaudy. I have a tiny little hand. I need and need little tiny rings.
00:17:42
Speaker
and So God found just the right one for me. And it turned out that it was identical to a picture that I had picked out years ago.
00:17:53
Speaker
God gives us the desires of our heart. And I had not found one like that when I was looking. that would fit me in terms of size, that wasn't gaudy. Because I had tried on that other ring that I had liked years years before that. And it was just too big. And I was like, well, I guess I can't have that one.
00:18:10
Speaker
But I liked the style. And it turned out that God made my ring just for my hand size. Also, same thing with my wedding dress. When I went in with my best friend and we went shopping for a wedding dress, we walked in and I told the the sales lady the types of things that I liked.
00:18:33
Speaker
And we went into the dressing room, my friend and I, and we prayed and we prayed for God to send me. I prayed that he would send me the perfect dress that he wanted me to wear.
00:18:46
Speaker
And our wonderful God brought out a dress that fit every description of what I had told the lady for things that I liked. I told her that I liked pink. And I liked a scallop look.
00:19:03
Speaker
It goes like this. A scallop goes like this, like a smile. And I had told her that I liked one that looked like a corset. And ah I needed something like a halter neck because I'm very short and my shoulders are very narrow.
00:19:20
Speaker
So I needed something that wasn't big and poofy and gaudy out here. I needed something that would go around me like this. And that I had my daughter who was four or five at the time.
00:19:34
Speaker
And that I wanted a dress that would have a matching dress for her and my friend's daughters because they were going to be our my flower girls. And this woman comes in a moment after we finished praying and she brought my wedding dress to me.
00:19:50
Speaker
And it it was had absolutely every single attribute down to the fact that it had a child's dress, a little girl's matching dress to it.
00:20:02
Speaker
That was identical.
00:20:05
Speaker
And I tried on one dress and we left. We were there for probably an hour all told.
00:20:14
Speaker
So I know that God will pick things out. and when I want God to pick out ah ah a washer for me. So I think I know which one he has picked out for me.
00:20:27
Speaker
And I'm just, I'm so, I'm so excited and thrilled, but I'm still apprehensive because it's it's another item that will need to be paid for that now I will be trusting in God to pay for.
00:20:40
Speaker
But I share this experience with you because this is part of, ah you know, it's really important to me that this event have daily application. And so I want you to see by my witnessing because witness is someone who experiences things with God and then shares them.
00:20:55
Speaker
And I want you to see by the experiences that God has led me through that just like with my necklace, that he took me through that situation so that I could be a witness about it and that he wants us to go to him.
00:21:09
Speaker
And he shows us this over and over again. And King Hezekiah acknowledged that we go through these things and it was for our good that we had this trouble.
00:21:21
Speaker
So I want to encourage you to take whatever it is you have going on to God because he wants you to go to him. And we don't want to miss out on an answered prayer by simply not asking for it.
00:21:34
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. i feel I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and that you will be encouraged to share this event and to tell other people about it so that they too can be encouraged and read God's word so that they too can can go to God and and know that they can trust in him and make him the most important one in their lives and to get to know God because we know that knowing God is what really delights him.
00:22:00
Speaker
isn't it Wouldn't it be nice to delight God? Let's delight God by knowing him and knowing that he wants us to take things to him. So hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, and I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
