Counting the Omer & Its Significance

00:01:26
Speaker
If you would like to participate in today's counting of the Omer, just repeat after me. This is something that God has commanded each of us to do on our own. So even if you are not counting the Omer with me, I hope that you are counting the Omer for yourself at home every day.
00:01:46
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe,
00:01:55
Speaker
who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:02:09
Speaker
Today is the fifth day of the sixth week and day 40.
00:02:18
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.

Shavuot Insights & Customs

00:02:22
Speaker
I was watching a really interesting video today. I believe I've watched it before, but there's just so much information that I thought I would share this again if I have not shared this particular bit on Shavuot.
00:02:35
Speaker
Shavuot, as you know, is the time that is the, it's called the Feast of Shavuot, and it is the time that is 50 days after Passover, and this is what we are counting with the Omer.
00:02:49
Speaker
God commanded us in both Deuteronomy 16 as well as Leviticus 23 to count the omere and to do it individually. And this is a time of anticipation.
00:03:01
Speaker
I loved this educational video that I watched on this time of counting the Omer. Why would we do that? God has commanded us to do so because it is an anticipatory time.
00:03:14
Speaker
This is the time of harvest. And then what is customarily done on the final day, Shavuot, is that we are to make an offering to God based upon the blessings that he has bestowed upon us within this time.
00:03:31
Speaker
And we are expected to anticipate this day of Shavuot. And according to the video, This Shavuot was also originally commemorating the day of Moses bringing the law from God.
00:03:50
Speaker
And he when he went up to Mount Sinai and he met with God and he came back down with the Ten Commandments and other laws, this was the giving of that. Now, as we all probably remember, the people down below who were waiting for Moses to come down got anxious and decided that they would make a golden calf to worship.
00:04:10
Speaker
And so when Moses came down because God told him, you need to go down to those people, your people, because they are misbehaving terribly. So Moses went down and he broke the tablets. He was so upset.
00:04:23
Speaker
And so the people were not prepared to receive God's word, God's law. And so now what is customarily done is that the is that people will wait up all night for Shavuot day to arrive.

Anticipation & Personal Reflections

00:04:39
Speaker
So Shavuot eve, like some people might say, like akin to waiting up at Christmas Eve for Christmas day, sometimes people have a tradition where they open presents at midnight. So it's kind of like that. So in anticipation of this great day of Shavuot or what we would now call Pentecost,
00:04:58
Speaker
is that it's customary for the Jewish people to stay up all night in anticipation and to be ready for God. Because in the the first time, they were not ready.
00:05:09
Speaker
And so they are marking, making marked change by being ready and staying up all night. Another thing that was explained is that the 50 days are like steps that we are counting as we pass from Passover to Shavuot, which is the receiving.
00:05:28
Speaker
And we are expected to wait with great anticipation. But the the kicker is, is that if you don't anticipate God doing something, you'll miss out because he won't bring something.
00:05:41
Speaker
You need to be expecting it to happen. And so I am anxiously waiting to see what God is doing, is going to do on that great day of Shavuot when he ah does something. I don't know what, but I'm very excited because I already feel that this this time ah for the the counting of the Omer has been such a blessed time.
00:06:03
Speaker
I've experienced so many blessings during this time, and I hope that you have too. And then we will talk more about Shavuot in the days to come as we get closer. We are only 10 days away from Shavuot.
00:06:15
Speaker
This is so exciting. So thank you for joining me as we did our counting of the Shavuot, or of the Omer in anticipation of Shavuot. We have a lot to go over today in our reading.

Book of Amos & King Uzziah

00:06:31
Speaker
We are going to be finishing the book of Amos. And we will be reading more about King Uzziah. I wanted to explain too that if you were reading in the Big Bible, King Uzziah is actually, he goes by two names.
00:06:48
Speaker
And ah they describe him the exact same way as being a 16 when he ascended the throne. both in 2 Kings chapter 14 as well as 2 Chronicles chapter 26.
00:07:02
Speaker
But ah and they they say that his mother, they give the name of his mother, but they give him two different names. So in it's like ah in one book he goes by Amaziah again, I think, or or some Ziah name.
00:07:16
Speaker
And then in the the name that we are using is Uzziah. So I just wanted to ah clear that up in case anybody has been following along in their big Bible.
00:07:27
Speaker
And when you, if you come to 2 Kings, he is referred to by a different name. And so that's one of the great things about reading in this particular version is that we're not confused.
00:07:39
Speaker
Because yeah karen Henley has done such a beautiful job of consolidating the records and the historical account into one big story across from Genesis to Revelation so that we can have a much clearer understanding of God's great big picture here for us.
00:07:58
Speaker
I'm just, I'm really loving this version is this overview story is just so educational and it just really sheds a lot of light on the historical um timeline of everything that is going on, which will lead us all the way through to the New Testament.

Amos's Prophecies & Social Justice

00:08:17
Speaker
So we are going to pick up today in Amos chapter eight, and it is entitled, The Basket of Fruit.
00:08:28
Speaker
Here's the next picture God put in my mind. It was a basket of fruit ready to eat. God asked, Amos, what do you see?
00:08:40
Speaker
see a basket of fruit ready to eat, I said. The time is ready for my people, said God. I won't keep trouble from them any longer.
00:08:52
Speaker
When it happens, the worship songs will turn to crying. Listen to this.
00:09:01
Speaker
Listen to this if you give poor people a hard time. You say, when will this worship day be over? We want to sell our wheat.
00:09:13
Speaker
You don't give people all they paid for. You cheat when you weigh what they're buying. You sell dirt mixed in with wheat.
00:09:26
Speaker
You buy poor people with your silver. You trade a pair of shoes for a poor person. The land will shake for this.
00:09:37
Speaker
The people will cry, says God. I'll make the sun go down, but it will only be noon. I will turn your worship parties into sad times.
00:09:48
Speaker
I will make you wear clothes made out of old sackcloth. I'll make it feel like the end of a bad day.
00:09:56
Speaker
The time is coming when there won't be enough. It's not that there won't be enough food. It's not that there won't be enough water. It will be a time when no one hears God's words.
00:10:11
Speaker
People will go from east to west. They will go from north to south. They will look for God's word, but they won't find it.

Warnings & Hope for Israel

00:10:22
Speaker
Then the beautiful young women will fall down.
00:10:25
Speaker
The strong young men will fall down too. And they will all be so thirsty for God's word that they will fall down and they won't get up again.
00:10:39
Speaker
Amos chapter 7 verses 10 through 17 is entitled, Don't Tell Us. One of the priests talked to Amos. Get out of here, you prophet, he said.
00:10:52
Speaker
Go back to Judah and tell God's words there. Don't tell us what God says. This is a safe place for our king. This is the worship house for our kingdom.
00:11:05
Speaker
Once I was not a prophet. said Amos. I wasn't even a prophet's son. I was just a shepherd and I helped take care of trees. But God said I should tell his words to Israel.
00:11:19
Speaker
So listen.
00:11:23
Speaker
You say I should not tell you God's word. You say i should stop talking against Israel. So here is what God says. Your wife will leave you and love other men.
00:11:36
Speaker
Your children will be killed by swords. Your land will be given to other people. You will die in a land where people do not worship God. The people of Israel will be taken away by another nation.
00:11:50
Speaker
They will be taken out of their own land.
00:11:55
Speaker
Amos chapter nine is entitled, God Watches.
00:12:01
Speaker
I saw God and he was standing by the altar. God said, hit the posts that hold up the worship house. Hit them so hard that the floors shake.
00:12:14
Speaker
Pull the posts down on the people's heads. Nobody will get away. You are like enemies to me, says God. But I won't get rid of all of my people.
00:12:28
Speaker
says God. i will bring back David's kingdom, the kingdom of Judah. I will fix the places where it is broken. I will build it up like it used to be.
00:12:40
Speaker
Someday I will bring Israel back home. They are my people too. They'll build up the cities again. They will plant grape fields. They will drink wine.
00:12:51
Speaker
They will grow gardens. They will eat fruit. I'll bring the people of Israel back to their own land. They'll never be sent away again. This is the land i have given to them, says God.

Historical Accounts of Kings

00:13:09
Speaker
2 Kings chapter 14, 29 through 15, and 2 Chronicles chapter 26. This section is entitled, Uzziah Becomes Proud.
00:13:24
Speaker
Now Jeroboam II died and his son Zechariah became the next king of Israel. Zechariah was a bad king, just like his father. And Zechariah was the king for just six months.
00:13:39
Speaker
A man named Shalem made plans to kill Zechariah. Shalem had a fight with Zechariah while the people were watching and Shalem killed Zechariah. Then Shalem became the next king of Israel.
00:13:54
Speaker
But Shalom was the king for just one month. And then Menahem had a fight with him. Menahem killed Shalom. Then Menahem became the king of Israel. And he was the king for 10 years.
00:14:08
Speaker
But he was a bad king.
00:14:11
Speaker
Back in Judah, Uzziah was still the king. He had been a good king, but he got lots of power and then he became proud. he went into the worship house and he tried to offer a gift on the altar.
00:14:29
Speaker
But the high priest and 80 other priests followed him and they were very brave. They said, this isn't right. You are not allowed to offer a gift on the altar.
00:14:41
Speaker
Only the priests are supposed to do that. Leave the worship house. You have not obeyed God. So God will not take your gift. Uzziah held the offering bowl in his hand, and he was ready to give his sweet-smelling gift.
00:14:57
Speaker
He got very angry, and he began shouting madly at the priests. And then all of a sudden, Uzziah's forehead turned white with leprosy, the skin sickness.
00:15:11
Speaker
And the priests saw what happened. They made him leave in a hurry. And Uzziah wanted to leave fast anyway, and that's because God had made him sick. King Uzziah had that skin sickness until he died.
00:15:26
Speaker
And he had to live in a different house.

Lessons on Humility & Obedience

00:15:29
Speaker
He had to stay away from the worship house. And while King Uzziah was sick, his son Jotham was in charge. Jotham took over the palace and he ruled the people.
00:15:42
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:15:49
Speaker
So we finished the book of Amos today. And so it's a continuation of what we've been learning about. Yesterday, we read about that God does not want people to be proud.
00:16:04
Speaker
And he wants us to take care of people who have less than us and to not oppress poor people.
00:16:12
Speaker
So he says specifically to listen to this if you give poor people a hard time. People were complaining that they wanted the Sabbath to be over. When will this be over? We want to sell our wheat.
00:16:27
Speaker
Do you remember when Jesus complained and he overturned the table saying that you have made my house a den of robbers? People were selling sacrificial animals at a profit.
00:16:39
Speaker
And all people wanted to do was sell, sell, sell, and make money, money, money. They were so money hungry and greedy. And they were selling dirt mixed in with the wheat.
00:16:51
Speaker
Can you imagine that? Selling dirt mixed in with food in order to weigh the scales heavier so that they could cheat the people? Oh, that was terrible.
00:17:02
Speaker
And God says that the land will shake for this. We spoke recently about leaving room for God's revenge because he will avenge. It is his to avenge.
00:17:14
Speaker
He sees how people are treated. It is not up to us to take revenge, but to leave room for God's wrath, God's anger. And God is doing that here. He's going to be sending Israel away. And we've talked about that.
00:17:30
Speaker
But more than sending them away, he's going to remove his presence from them. He will not send any of his words to them and the people will be thirsty for it.
00:17:44
Speaker
Jesus said that he would have springs of living water flowing from him. And that's the Holy Spirit. So that we are not, he says, those who are hungry will be filled and those who are thirsty will drink and be satisfied with him.

Daily Application of Teachings

00:18:02
Speaker
But during this particular time, the people are going to thirst so badly for him that they will die looking for him.
00:18:13
Speaker
And then we see that Uzziah becomes proud. But before we get into that, I wanted to remind us that in speaking about the poor, Jesus also spoke about this.
00:18:28
Speaker
And so we spoke ah yesterday about not oppressing the poor and to be sure we take care of them. Jesus also spoke about this in Matthew chapter 25 verses 31 through 46.
00:18:41
Speaker
verses thirty one grew forty six And this is when Jesus talks about when he comes back again. And it reads, when the son of man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne and all the nations will be gathered before him and he will

God's Judgment & Eternal Life

00:19:08
Speaker
separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
00:19:14
Speaker
He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. And then the king will say to those on his right, come, you hope you who are blessed by my father, take your inheritance by my father.
00:19:29
Speaker
oh Take the inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.
00:19:44
Speaker
I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me.
00:19:56
Speaker
I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you something to drink?
00:20:09
Speaker
When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? And the king will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
00:20:34
Speaker
Then he will say to those on his left, depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat.
00:20:47
Speaker
I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink. I was a stranger, and you did not invite me in. I needed clothes, and you did not clothe me.
00:20:59
Speaker
I was sick and in prison, and you did not look after me. They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry your tea or or stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison and did not help you?
00:21:17
Speaker
hugh will reply, truly, I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.
00:21:29
Speaker
Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.
00:21:37
Speaker
We've spoken about God doesn't want people just to simply show up and claim to believe in him. He doesn't want lip service. He wants heart service.
00:21:49
Speaker
He wants us to take care of others. And simply saying, oh, I don't push people down to get ahead or i don't treat people poorly. It's not enough just to not treat people badly.
00:22:01
Speaker
We aren't meant to actively care for those who have less than us. We are meant to feed the hungry. We are meant to give water to the thirsty. We are meant to clothe those who need clothes.
00:22:15
Speaker
We are meant to look after those who are sick. We are meant to take care of those and look after people who are in prison even, and not simply dismiss them as being lower than life.
00:22:29
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that in the same way that God made judgment against Israel for treating people poorly, He will bring judgment to those who also do not treat people properly and don't look after them.
00:22:45
Speaker
This was not something just meant for Israel. This is something meant for us too in our daily application today. We want to be sure that we are taking care of people, that we are using the gifts that God has given us.

Reflections on Humility & Blessings

00:23:00
Speaker
Everything we have has been given to us by God. And we are meant to use it properly, not just to buy more and more stuff for ourselves, but to use it to help other people too who have less than than us.
00:23:14
Speaker
We're meant to feed others and clothe others and give people water. We are meant to be there for people when they are sick and they don't have other people to look after them. So this is a very, very important a daily application for us today.
00:23:34
Speaker
We could stop there, but we also want to speak about Uzziah's pride. I do want to mention Uzziah's pride. He started out good, but he became so proud.
00:23:46
Speaker
It says in my Tree of Life version that he became haughty. H-A-U-G-H-T-Y. a you g h t y Not that he was hot, but that he became haughty.
00:24:01
Speaker
So when we look at the definition of the word haughty, it means to lift yourself up, to exalt yourself, to be very arrogant and conceited.
00:24:14
Speaker
And what he was doing was he was, it says, disdainfully proud, scornfully arrogant.
00:24:24
Speaker
And the opposite of that would be humble. So he was the very opposite of humble. And it states in the big version that he had done right until
00:24:42
Speaker
he came until he got powerful. After he became powerful, Then he stopped being right with God.
00:24:53
Speaker
I'm trying to find my verse here. It says in verse 16 of 2nd Chronicles chapter 26.
00:25:02
Speaker
But when he became strong, his heart grew so haughty that he acted corruptly for he trespassed against the Lord his God by entering into the temple of God to burn incense on the altar of incense.
00:25:19
Speaker
And the priest told him, it is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. He had ray- elevated himself to the point where he believed he was now greater or at least equal to that of the priests.
00:25:39
Speaker
And that is not something God gave him power to do. And as a result of his disrespect to God and his pride, God struck him with the skin sickness for the rest of his life.
00:25:56
Speaker
And it doesn't say he didn't even try to repent. Instead of repenting, he lived in a separate house for the rest of his life, and he never, ever got to go into the worship house again.
00:26:09
Speaker
He chose pride instead of repentance. We wanna be sure that we notice these types of behaviors because remember these daily applications are to help us see how to behave as well as how not to behave.
00:26:24
Speaker
So we have one daily application for how to behave. We need to be sure we are clothing and feeding and oh, and we almost forgot about welcoming others as a stranger.
00:26:35
Speaker
In our society today, there is a great deal in our country about turning people away from other countries, claiming it's for national security, claiming we don't want foreigners here.
00:26:49
Speaker
We don't want people from South America or from Mexico. We don't want to offer people asylum. God says that we will pay for that.
00:27:01
Speaker
It is not okay. He says, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in. These are strangers. When we were, when the when the people were traveling, they would when they lived in Egypt, they were strangers in a strange land and they were treated oppressively until they finally were able to leave.
00:27:25
Speaker
And God said, you were strangers in a strange land. You need to be sure that you welcome strangers as well, um people from other countries. And our country will be held responsible for that in God's day of judgment.
00:27:41
Speaker
Those of us who have participated in that will be held responsible. And that might not be an easy message to bear in today's political society, but that's what the Bible says. We are seeing it here in the Old Testament in the book of Amos, and we see it again. Jesus confirms that for us in the New Testament.
00:28:01
Speaker
So I want us to be mindful that we welcome people from other lands. that we not turn away strangers, that we not forget to clothe them.
00:28:12
Speaker
One of the biggest complaints about people from other countries is that they want to use our services for food, for work, for money, for whatever they need.
00:28:26
Speaker
And God tells us that it is not okay to turn people away for that. We will be held responsible. We will be separated at the time of his judgment, left and right, for those who fed it people and those who did not.
00:28:43
Speaker
So that's very convicting. It's a very deep conviction

Concluding Thoughts & Holiday Wishes

00:28:48
Speaker
for us on that. We need to be mindful. And then also to make sure that when God blesses us, When we have enough and instead of using that to to help others, but instead we become haughty and prideful and elevate ourselves to the status of being feeling that we are better than others.
00:29:06
Speaker
God is not pleased with that either. And he struck King Uzziah with illness. And he still did not choose to repent. And we've seen over and over again that the purpose of God's discipline is to bring people into repentance.
00:29:22
Speaker
And yet he did not choose to do so. So I just want us to be mindful. that if God is blessing us, especially during this time of harvest and this time where we are especially mindful of blessings, that we don't become prideful in these blessings, that we not elevate ourselves, that we not become arrogant and prideful about everything that we have, that we not use it to to simply get more and more stuff, but that we are responsible stewards of what God has given us.
00:29:55
Speaker
to make sure that we are taking care of others too, with the bounty that God has provided for us.
00:30:03
Speaker
So I hope that you have found today's ah reading personally applicable for your life. I know I have found it personally applicable in my life. And i hope that you feel God has lit your light today.
00:30:16
Speaker
And if you have, please remember to click that light button at the end after watching or listening along so that others can also be aware of what God expects of us by reading his word.
