Daily Bible Reading with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching (Audio only)

Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading will cover the Book of Amos Chapters 4-7:1-9. Today we will read about God's disappointment that despite the discipline He brought to Israel, Israel failed to return to Him. God will describe the many ways in which His people are disappointing Him- treating the poor badly, not being fair, being prideful, getting angry about being told they are doing wrong, acting like doing right isn't important, engaging in loud worship services with music rather than doing what is right, fair, and looking for good to do rather than bad. God once again asserts that He desires to be merciful, the people just need to seek Him and do what is right! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of coming to God with our heart, not just paying Him lip service. We will be reminded that God has set us apart by His commandments and we are meant to behave the way He has called us to behave and the way He SHOWS us how to behave- with mercy, fairness, love, and kindness, without being prideful. We need to be sure we are seeking to do what is right rather than looking for ways to get away with things that are wrong. We will be encouraged that God treats His people differently, sending rain to one field and letting another one dry up. As His people who follow after Him with our whole hearts we can be certain that God will take care of us and not lump us in with His judgments against the world.

00:00:03
Speaker
Good day, everybody. i hope you are having a fabulous day. Today is Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, and you're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching.
00:00:15
Speaker
We are here for our daily counting of the Omer and our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.

Encouragement and Thanks

00:00:25
Speaker
If you are following along on your commitment calendar, it's time to take that out and get your sticker ready or however you are marking it off because you're about to hear the Bible today. I am so glad that you are joining along with me, whether you are on your favorite podcast or whether you are watching by video.
00:00:42
Speaker
Thank you so much for being here. I know this is an especially hard time of the year with been finishing school, and you guys are going to get there. You're almost done. You're almost finished with this school year.
00:00:55
Speaker
And once you're done with this school year, that'll be the end of it. but but You won't have to do it again.

Understanding the Omer and Shavuot

00:01:01
Speaker
We are going to start our time off with the counting of the Omer. So if you would like to follow along, just repeat after me and then you will also have counted the Omer.
00:01:13
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:01:33
Speaker
Today is the fourth day of the sixth week and day 39.
00:01:43
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:01:47
Speaker
I don't know. I'm going miss counting the Omer once we get done. We are almost finished. We have only 11 more days and then it will be the end of it. We will reach Shavuot or Pentecost and that marks the final day of the spring harvest.
00:02:04
Speaker
And we will have a separate section session just on that and coming up soon in within the next 10 days. I'm going to record a special session that we'll talk about that day.

Amos: Superficial vs. Heartfelt Worship

00:02:16
Speaker
We are going to continue in the book of Amos and finish that. And today will we we will be covering Amos chapter 4, 5, 6, and 7. bye six and seven As we talked about yesterday, ah God is very frustrated with the people in Israel, and he's going to be sending them to the Assyrians.
00:02:39
Speaker
And this is because even though they may be practicing as part of their many worship ceremonies, ah the sacrificing to God and the following of some festivals, they are not practicing with their heart.
00:02:55
Speaker
And it God desires us to practice with the heart. That is what he's really looking for. He's not interested in attendance. That is not his main point in life.
00:03:09
Speaker
And ah so he's looking for our heart to be involved.

Heartfelt Worship and Ethical Behavior

00:03:15
Speaker
He's looking for us to truly be seeking him and to loving him with our hearts, not simply giving lip service.
00:03:23
Speaker
And he's also looking for us to behave like we belong to him and have been set apart by his commandments. God's commandments teach us how to live. They teach us how to care for other people, how to love. And God gives us these examples over and over again of his own caring and love.
00:03:44
Speaker
So we have the best examples we could possibly follow because God is love. And here we're going to see that God, God, even even in his days of judgment that are coming, he is still longing for the people to repent.

God's Discipline and Reflection

00:04:02
Speaker
He doesn't want to have to bring this judgment upon them, but they still, no matter what, no matter what he sends to them, he will be explaining, they still don't turn back.
00:04:14
Speaker
The purpose of God's discipline we've discussed multiple times is to bring us back to him, to seek him. When we see that things are not going well, then we need to look and say, is this a lesson I'm supposed to be learning? Am I walking away from God? Am I not following him?
00:04:31
Speaker
Do I need to be seeking him? God will work good into everything. We've talked about that too. But we also need to be mindful of what we are experiencing. Does it have to do with discipline?
00:04:44
Speaker
Have we turned away from God? We need to be sure that we are on track with him.
00:04:51
Speaker
So here we go, we're going to pick up today in chapter four. You women of Israel, listen.

Amos: Justice and Genuine Worship

00:05:00
Speaker
You give poor people a hard time.
00:05:03
Speaker
You tell your husbands, bring drinks for us. God promises a time of trouble is coming. People from another land will take you away.
00:05:15
Speaker
They will throw you out of your city. I let you go without food. There wasn't enough bread anywhere, but you didn't come back to me, says God.
00:05:27
Speaker
I sent rain to one town. I kept it raining on another town. I kept it from raining on another town. It rained on one field, but another field dried up.
00:05:41
Speaker
People went to other towns looking for water. They never got enough. But you still didn't come back to me, says God. I made the plants sick in your gardens.
00:05:53
Speaker
The leaves dried up and died. Grasshoppers ate your trees. But you still didn't come back to me, says God. I sent sickness to people just like I did in Egypt.
00:06:07
Speaker
I let your young men get killed in battle fights. I let the enemy take your horses. I made you smell stinky army camps. But you still didn't come back to me, says God.
00:06:21
Speaker
God makes mountains.
00:06:25
Speaker
God makes mountains and God makes wind. God lets us know what he was thinking, what he is thinking. He walks on the earth's high places. His name is the Lord God who has all power.
00:06:42
Speaker
Amos chapter five is entitled, Look for good, look for God. Here is what God says. Look for me, then you will live.
00:06:54
Speaker
Don't look for other people to save you. You turn being fair into being angry. You treat doing right as if it were not important. You hate people who tell you that you are wrong.
00:07:09
Speaker
You hate people who tell the truth. You run over poor people. You built big stone houses, but you won't get to live in them. You planted big, green grape fields, but you won't drink wine from your grapes.
00:07:26
Speaker
That's because I know how many times you have sinned. Look for what is good, not for what is bad. Then God will be with you. Hate wrong, love right, be fair when you judge.
00:07:42
Speaker
Maybe God will be kind to you.
00:07:46
Speaker
I hate your worship parties, God says. I can't stand it when you get together. Take your noisy songs away from me. I won't listen to your music.
00:07:57
Speaker
What I want is for you to be fair. I want you to do what's right, says God.
00:08:05
Speaker
Amos chapter six, the people's pride. There's bad news for you people who don't care. You lie down on beds made of ivory.
00:08:16
Speaker
You sit down on resting places. You eat the best lamb meat. You eat the fat beef. You play your harps. You drink bowl after bowl of wine.
00:08:29
Speaker
You use the best creams for your skin. But you're not sorry that God's people have sinned. So you will be the first ones taken away. Your parties will come to an end.
00:08:42
Speaker
God has promised.

Pride, Justice, and God's Judgment

00:08:44
Speaker
And here is what he says. I hate my people's pride. I will give the city to its enemies. I will give away everything in the city.
00:08:57
Speaker
Grasshoppers, fire, industry. Chapter seven, verses one through nine. Here's the picture God put in my mind.
00:09:08
Speaker
He was getting lots of big grasshoppers ready. And part of the crop from the field had been picked for the king. The rest was just coming up out of the ground. But the big grasshoppers called locusts ate everything off the land.
00:09:25
Speaker
I cried, God forgive your people. How can they live? Israel is such a small nation. So God said, I won't make this happen.
00:09:39
Speaker
Here's the next picture God put in my mind. God was sending fire. it dried up the sea and it ate up the land. I cried, please, God, stop.
00:09:52
Speaker
How can your people live? Israel is such a small nation. So God took it back. I won't make this happen, he said.
00:10:05
Speaker
Here is the next picture God put in my mind. God stood by a wall. It was straight. God was holding up a string.
00:10:16
Speaker
The string hung down to show that the wall was straight. God said, Amos, what do you see? i see a string you're checking the wall with, I said.
00:10:31
Speaker
Then God said, I am holding a string to check my people. I won't keep trouble from them any longer. The worship places for idols will be torn down.
00:10:43
Speaker
I will come against Israel with my sword. And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:53
Speaker
I thought we were going to be finishing Amos, but where we're not. We still have tomorrow that we'll be finishing Amos.
00:11:01
Speaker
So here we see, we want to remember too, that Amos was not from Israel. He was from Judah and he was not even ah in a family line of prophets.
00:11:13
Speaker
He was a shepherd and God spoke to him and God showed him what he was going to be bringing. And did you see how Amos was interceding for Israel?
00:11:25
Speaker
He knew how sinful the people were. And yet when he saw the great destruction that God was planning on bringing, he prayed for intercession. He prayed that God not bring such a harsh judgment on the people.
00:11:39
Speaker
And God listened to his plea. In the same way, Jesus is our intercessor. He is our great priest up in heaven. And I just wanted to make that correlation.
00:11:51
Speaker
and What do we see here that God is very unhappy with? God is unhappy with the way people are not being just.
00:12:03
Speaker
They are not being fair. It says here for the women
00:12:11
Speaker
that the that the women are giving poor people a hard time. They wanna sit around all day drinking.
00:12:19
Speaker
That sounds a little like a today's society too.

Hardship from Ignoring God and Protection for the Faithful

00:12:25
Speaker
god promised God reminded them that he let them go without food. you remember the terrible time that they had there where there was no food and God had promised and back in Deuteronomy that if they did not obey that there would be so there would be so little food that people would eat their children?
00:12:46
Speaker
And yet we see that this is exactly what God did. And he's reminding them, I let you go without food. And you still didn't come back. And we see here also that God has provision for those who do look for him.
00:13:03
Speaker
It says, I sent rain to one town. I kept it from raining on another town. It rained on one field, but another field dried up. God sets apart his people to be special and different.
00:13:18
Speaker
He treats his people differently than he does the rest of the people. So we can be assured that if we are following after God, we don't need to worry about terrible things coming upon us because God will treat us differently.
00:13:33
Speaker
He will take care of us, and he's shown us that time and time again in the great judgments that he has brought.
00:13:42
Speaker
So God is unhappy with how people are treating the poor. God is is angry. He says, you treat being fair into being angry. People don't want to have to be fair. They get angry about it.
00:13:55
Speaker
It says, you treat doing right as if it were not important. God wants us to do what is right. It says, you hate people who tell you that you're wrong.
00:14:07
Speaker
That's pride. Nobody likes to be told that they're wrong, but there's a lot of pride in that when we don't want to accept instruction, especially from someone God sends.
00:14:20
Speaker
It says, you hate people who tell the truth. you remember the prophets that they have killed? They sent many prophets to to their death by stoning them because they were bringing God's word of truth to them.
00:14:34
Speaker
You run over poor people. They're taking advantage of them. God hates it when we take advantage of people because we're stronger than them or bigger than them or we have more than them.
00:14:49
Speaker
God says that they built big houses and had fields, but they're not going to get to use those things.
00:14:58
Speaker
Says, look for what is good, not for what is bad. Then God will be with you. Over and over again, God promises that if we simply look for what is good, not to look out to do what is bad, then God

Reflection on Fairness and Genuine Worship

00:15:13
Speaker
will be with us.
00:15:15
Speaker
There is so much daily application for us in here to- today, isn't there?
00:15:21
Speaker
says, hate wrong and love right. Be fair when you judge.
00:15:27
Speaker
God says, I hate your worship parties. I can't stand it when you get together. Take your noisy songs away from me. I won't listen to your music. What I want is for you to be fair.
00:15:40
Speaker
I want you to do what is right. This goes along with what we've said in the last couple of days where God desires mercy more than sacrifice.
00:15:51
Speaker
He desires our hearts to be right more than he does rituals. and even in the offering of sacrifices. God desires for us to do what is right. That is what is most important to God.
00:16:04
Speaker
Yesterday we spoke about the fact that King Uzziah worked hard to do what would make God happy. And we ah saw that what God delights in is us knowing him.
00:16:18
Speaker
God also delights in mercy, which we spoke about. He says, I want you to be fair and do what's right. God doesn't want us to simply sing songs to him.
00:16:31
Speaker
We call that worship. But what God wants is that if our heart is not doing the right thing, then those songs of worship don't mean anything to him.
00:16:42
Speaker
They're noisy. It says, I can't stand it when you get together. Take your noisy songs away from me. I won't listen to your music. What I want is for you to be fair.
00:16:54
Speaker
I want you to do what is right, says God. It matters more to God that we are doing what's right than it does for us to sing songs at church or anywhere.
00:17:11
Speaker
And God hates pride. says, I hate my people's pride. I will give everything away to its enemies. I will give everything away in the city.
00:17:26
Speaker
The people are very prideful. They think that they are above the law. They think that they are above the other people. They think they're better than everyone else. And in today's social media, everybody wants to sit there and post postings about how fabulous things are going.
00:17:41
Speaker
And it's like a competition where everybody's life is better than everybody else's life. God hates that. God wants us to be fair and do what is right and to not brag about what we have or to give false impression that our lives are so much better.
00:17:59
Speaker
God says, you have these things, but I will take them away. Those things are not what's important. What's important is to be doing what is right for God.

Applying Lessons of Fairness and Devotion

00:18:10
Speaker
And so that is our big daily application for today, is to be mindful of of how we are doing things. Are we being fair?
00:18:19
Speaker
Are we treating people properly? Are we just singing noisy songs to him? Are we oppressing people? who Are we pushing people down to get ahead in life?
00:18:31
Speaker
Those are not things that God enjoys.
00:18:35
Speaker
Well, it's a very convicting to to hear about these things, but we want to make sure that we enjoy hearing the truth and that we don't hate what is right. And that is part of our daily application today.
00:18:49
Speaker
So thank you for joining me, whether you were following along on your favorite podcast or watching on video. I hope that you found that God has lit your light and helped you to be mindful of doing the right thing versus just worshiping God with our lips.

Closing Call to Action and Engagement

00:19:06
Speaker
I will hope everybody has a fantastic rest of their day. If you know of somebody who could benefit or would enjoy listening to these daily Bible readings, please share this event.
00:19:16
Speaker
Our goal is to help people, to help spread the word about reading God's word. It's to help people know about God and to know about his great love and to be a light in the world.
00:19:30
Speaker
Jesus says, we are the light of the earth. We are the salt. And so we are meant to take what we see and hear from God and tell other people about it.
00:19:41
Speaker
We can do that by sharing this event as well and by clicking that light button so that other people will see our lights and i want to hear God's word. But thank you for being here and I will be here again for everyone tomorrow.
