Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading includes the Book of Hosea Chapters 10, 14, 2 Chronicles 25:26-28, Chapter 26, and the Book of Amos Chapters 1-3. Today we will read about God's impending judgment on not just the nation of Israel, but also Judah and all the nations who are oppressing the poor. We will also read about King Uzziah, who comes into power after his father, King Amaziah, is killed by the people after he falls into sin and disobeys God. We will read that King Uzziah was good, looking for ways to make God happy, and so God brought him good things as a result. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about modeling the behavior that we saw in King Uzziah- let us find ways to make God happy, much like we would do on Mother's Day or Father's Day for those we love here on Earth. We know from our reading and discussion yesterday that God delights in us having knowledge of Him, really KNOWING Him and understanding who God is. Let us look for all the ways we can make God happy! He does so much for us and not because He has to. He chooses to be kind and loving to us. Does He not deserve for us to choose to find ways to make Him happy? Let us CHOOSE to be compassionate to others, kind, loving, thoughtful of others the way God is with us. Let us CHOOSE to make God the most important one in our lives and spend time studying, reading His Word getting to know who God is, not because we HAVE to, but because we CHOOSE to. God isn't looking for us to do things out of obligation but by choice. Let us choose to find ways to make God happy today and every day.

00:01:10
Speaker
There is so much to learn and know about God. Yesterday we learned that God delights in us really having knowledge, knowing him. And so i I just love that. That's what this event is all about is getting to know God better.
00:01:25
Speaker
And so I hope that you are enjoying it and that you are finding that it has daily application for your life every single day.

Counting the Omer: A Blessing and Personal Experience

00:01:33
Speaker
If you would like to join me in counting the Omer, repeat after me.
00:01:38
Speaker
We will start with the blessing first.
00:01:42
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart.
00:01:55
Speaker
by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:02:04
Speaker
Today is the third day of the sixth week and day 38.
00:02:13
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:02:19
Speaker
I have recently in the past month began attending a Bible study at ah the Messianic Jewish congregation where I've been attending. And i love that ah the rabbi counts the Omer not only on Shabbat, but as he leads the Bible study on Tuesday, he also begins each session with the counting of the Omer.
00:02:40
Speaker
I love how he does that too. i love how he is obedient to that. And it's just, it's such a good example. And I just wanted to share that.

Exploring Hosea and Amos: Obedience and Social Justice

00:02:52
Speaker
Well, we are going to pick up today and finish the book of Hosea.
00:02:58
Speaker
And then we are also going to be reading some of the book of Amos. Amos is another prophet who spoke at during the same time period as Hosea.
00:03:11
Speaker
And ah Amos is going to speak about the the heart Hosea. of the people. At this time, ah the kings were sort of ah obeying.
00:03:23
Speaker
and we We know that and for our king, we have Amaziah, and he had started off by obeying God, and then he had drifted away. And so we spoke about that as not letting, not thinking that our past successes and our past obedience was going to keep us from um and obeying, and was going to keep us from disobeying in the future.
00:03:48
Speaker
So it's it's not enough simply to have said, oh, I was great when I was younger, but and then to fall away as we get older. or um to start falling into disobedience. So we spoke about that. And so jos Amos is going to be speaking about that as well.
00:04:05
Speaker
During this time, the hearts of the people were... were obeying rules without their heart being involved. So they were attending festivals. They were worshiping God in a sense, but they were, they were practicing religion.
00:04:24
Speaker
So although they may have been bringing offerings in like that, they weren't obeying. And what we will see in Amos's first reading is that they were, people were,
00:04:39
Speaker
they had They had much like what we have going on today, where we have a big separation between ah the people in terms of finances. We have a lot of people who are well off, and then there's this great gap in between where there's like no middle class.
00:04:57
Speaker
And then there's a lot of people who have very little. And so what we're seeing is that the people who are rich are abusing the people who don't have a lot, that they are not being mindful. The rich people are not being mindful to care for those who have less than them.
00:05:17
Speaker
They're more interested in building their wealth, and they are creating what they had in the day of debt slavery. So we're going to see God address the debt slavery that they are experiencing.
00:05:32
Speaker
causing the people to be bought in bondage to. And we're kind of doing that today where we have a lot of debt for people at a high interest rate. We're seeing interest rates that are quite high and there is is not ah a lot of ah caring for those who have less than us.
00:05:53
Speaker
And that really matters to to God. And as I was reading about the book of amos God makes it clear that he is not just seeing people who are oppressed in his nations.
00:06:07
Speaker
It matters to him people all over the world. And so while this is addressed to Israel. uh it's he's he's talking about too that the nations of the world are are going to also suffer because they are not looking out for those who have less than them for those who are very uh poor off and so ah it's not enough to simply say um Oh, yes, I believe in God.
00:06:39
Speaker
It's that we are expected to be separate from the world and live according to God's standards. And God is compassionate. We've spoken about that a lot lately, and he is merciful.
00:06:52
Speaker
We've spoken about that God desires mercy rather than sacrifice. And that doesn't apply just to him. it applies for us as well. It's not enough to simply bring sacrifice ah to to give our tithe or to obedient by attending church.
00:07:13
Speaker
But it's that we need to be doing God's work in the world. God gives each of us work to do. And we are to take care of those who have less than us.
00:07:24
Speaker
And we're to have a ah true heart for God, not to simply go through the motions of religion. And that's what God is going to be speaking to Amos about today.
00:07:36
Speaker
So I wanted to give that um preference that ah preface so that we when we read it, we will have understanding as to what we are reading. So it makes sense when we hear it.

Lessons from Hosea: Idolatry and Repentance

00:07:49
Speaker
So first we're going to pick up in Hosea chapter 10, and it is entitled, Bad Weeds in a Good Field.
00:08:00
Speaker
Hosea said, Israel was like a growing vine, but then they built places to worship idols. So now they will get in trouble. God said to his people, I told you to plant what's right.
00:08:17
Speaker
Then you would grow a crop of my love that never ends. I wanted you to know that it's a time to look for me. I wanted you to keep looking until I would bring what is good and right.
00:08:31
Speaker
But you planted sin. You are like bad weeds in a good field. You trusted your own power. But the battle, you trusted in how many fighting men you had.
00:08:44
Speaker
But the battle will come against your people. All your forts will be torn down. It's all because of your sin.
00:08:55
Speaker
Hosea chapter 14, like a green tree. Israel, come back to God, said Hosea. Ask him to forgive you.
00:09:07
Speaker
Ask for his kind love. We'll never call idols our gods. Idols are made with our own hands, but only you give kind love, God.
00:09:19
Speaker
I will make my people well from their sickness of sin, says God. I will love them for free. My anger is gone. i will be like water on the morning grass for Israel.
00:09:34
Speaker
Israel will be like a tall tree. Its roots will go down deep. Israel will be great like an olive tree. Israel will smell good like a cedar tree.
00:09:47
Speaker
Israel will grow flowers like a vine. Everyone will know who Israel is. Do you really want idols anymore? I am the one who will answer you.
00:09:59
Speaker
I will take care of you.
00:10:04
Speaker
Our next section, it comes from 2 Chronicles 25, verses 26 through 28, as well as chapter 26.

Kings Amaziah and Uzziah: Obedience and Consequences

00:10:13
Speaker
In Judah, Amaziah was the king, but he stopped obeying God.
00:10:19
Speaker
Then some people made plans to kill him. So King Amaziah ran away. But men went after King Amaziah. They found him and they killed him.
00:10:31
Speaker
They brought his body back on a horse and they put it in a grave. Amaziah's son Uzziah became the next king of Judah. He was only 16 years old.
00:10:44
Speaker
He was a good king. He did what was right. He looked for ways to make God happy. So God brought good things to him.
00:10:57
Speaker
God helped King Uzziah win against his enemies. All nations knew who King Uzziah was. He had lots of power. King Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem.
00:11:10
Speaker
One was at the corner gate. One was at the valley gate. He made them like forts and he built the towers in the desert too. King Uzziah dug wells.
00:11:23
Speaker
He had lots of cows and people worked in his fields. He loved to grow things. King Uzziah also made machines in the city.
00:11:35
Speaker
They were placed on the towers and they were used to shoot arrows and throw rocks when their enemies came. King Uzziah had a good army.
00:11:46
Speaker
The fighting men were very strong. Uzziah gave them shields and swords. He gave them metal coats and metal hats. He gave them bows and arrows.
00:12:02
Speaker
Our next section starts the book of Amos, chapters one and two, and it is entitled God's Anger.
00:12:12
Speaker
Amos was a shepherd. God talked to him. He saw things in his mind about Israel.
00:12:23
Speaker
He told what he saw, and this happened when Uzziah was ju Judas' king and King Jeroboam II was Israel's king. Amos says, God roars from his mountain.
00:12:39
Speaker
He is like thunder that comes from Jerusalem. Here is what God says. I am angry at the enemy lands. They tore up Israel.
00:12:50
Speaker
They took my people out of their cities. They sold my people. They didn't keep their promises to my people. They chased friends with swords.
00:13:02
Speaker
They would not be kind or loving. They were angry all the time. They did not control themselves. They killed people just to get more land.
00:13:14
Speaker
So I will burn down their forts and there will be strong winds and storms, says God. I am angry at my own people in Judah too. They haven't obeyed me.
00:13:27
Speaker
They worship idols. Idols are not real gods. So I will burn down the forts of Jerusalem. And I am angry at my people in Israel.
00:13:39
Speaker
They sell good people for silver. They sell helpless people to get shoes. They give poor people a hard time. They treat them like dirt.
00:13:51
Speaker
They won't be fair to them.
00:13:55
Speaker
Amos chapter 3. Paying for sin. Israel, I chose only you out of all the people on earth, so I will bring bring trouble to you for all your sins.
00:14:09
Speaker
Two people don't walk together unless they agree to walk together. a lion doesn't go roaring into a bush unless he is chasing something. A bird doesn't get into a trap on the ground unless the trap is set to catch him.
00:14:24
Speaker
A trap doesn't snap shut unless there is something to catch. A horn doesn't blow in a city unless there is something to be afraid of. A city is not torn down unless God makes it happen.
00:14:39
Speaker
God doesn't do anything unless he tells his prophets, Listen to this. says God. I will bring trouble to the people of Israel for their sins.
00:14:50
Speaker
I will tear down their altars. I will tear down the winter house. I will tear down the summer house. I will tear down houses that have ivory on them. I will tear down the big houses, says God.
00:15:04
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Amos's Prophecies: Modern Relevance and Social Injustice

00:15:10
Speaker
So what we see at the end of our chapter three in Amos today is that God is speaking about the rich. They have big houses, they're selling people to buy more shoes.
00:15:21
Speaker
They're very materialistic. They're wanting more and more stuff and they're doing it to the oppression of those who don't have much. And they're causing people, they're chargeing they're charging high rent.
00:15:33
Speaker
And so does that sound like anything going on in today's world? It's pretty much very similar. It's very similar. and And in the New Testament, we read that this is exactly what's going to happen before God's great day of judgment.
00:15:48
Speaker
And then God will judge the nations for that. And we will have the great day of the Lord.
00:15:54
Speaker
So we're we're seeing here that and people are still worshiping idols. there ah When I was reading on the book of Amos, it talks about that in of the temples,
00:16:11
Speaker
in in the in one of the temples that was set up, they had all the idols there. they had they had It was like multi-god temple so that they had stuff for God, they had stuff for the idols, and it was just like a one-stop shop for for ritual religion.
00:16:33
Speaker
And you could just basically worship whichever God you wanted to at that at the temple. And we have things like that set up today too. where it's supposed to be open for all religions.
00:16:45
Speaker
And it's very concerning how similar our situation is becoming, much like it was before. But God does tell us that this is what will occur.

Inspiration from King Uzziah: Acts of Love and Devotion

00:16:58
Speaker
But we're going to focus on King Uzziah for our daily application today. It says, that King Uzziah looked for ways to make God happy.
00:17:14
Speaker
So God brought good things to him. So he lived in a time of peace. God had helped him set up forts and machines and towers, and he had lots of power.
00:17:28
Speaker
So bro got God brought good things to him because he looked for ways to make God happy. Does that sound similar to what we've been talking about with making God the most important one?
00:17:40
Speaker
Yesterday, we spoke about how God delights in us knowing him. And when we know him more, we understand how much God loves us.
00:17:52
Speaker
And that in turn helps us to love him more. When we love God very much, it's just like when we love someone here, we want to do things that make them happy.
00:18:05
Speaker
And it's the same way with God, but with God is much more important. So Uzziah was looking for ways to make God happy. That is our daily application today.
00:18:16
Speaker
Look for ways every day, especially today for our daily application. What can you do to make God happy? Well, we know that God delights in us knowing him.
00:18:29
Speaker
We know that he prefers compassion rather than religious religiousness, religiosity. And so what we're looking for is things that like come from the heart, motivation from the heart.
00:18:45
Speaker
Instead of doing things out of a sense of obligation and requirement, God is looking for our heart. He wants sincerity.
00:18:56
Speaker
He wants us to do things out of choice because we want to, not because we feel like, oh, I have to do this. I better do this or else. That's not what God is looking for.
00:19:07
Speaker
God wrote the word on our heart and he's given us the Holy Spirit. So let's, we have days like Mother's Day and we have days like Father's Day.
00:19:18
Speaker
What about God's day? What about days to honor God where we just want to love and worship him and do things to make God happy? That is our daily application today.
00:19:31
Speaker
So I would like to encourage you to think of ways that you can do things just for God today. Is there someone one that you can be especially loving to, not because you feel like you have to but because you want to today?
00:19:45
Speaker
Look for ways that God puts in your path today to be loving and delightful, things that will bring joy to God. That is what we're hopefully you you will find to do today.
00:20:00
Speaker
i know I'll be looking for that today. So I hope that you feel that today's daily application just fills you with love and light.

Call to Action: Sharing and Acts of Kindness

00:20:08
Speaker
And when you get done reading or rather watching or listening, I hope that you click that light button. It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart.
00:20:17
Speaker
And it will help bring some attention to this event so that other people can also be encouraged to do something that helps delight God, to do something that makes God happy.
00:20:28
Speaker
And doing that and to read God's word, and it will help us spread the word about reading God's word so that people can learn to love God a lot too. So I hope you enjoyed today and I hope you have a fabulous rest of your day.
00:20:45
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
