Daily Bible Reading with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching (Audio only)

Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida:    https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading covers 1 Kings Chapter 22. Today we will see God's  fulfillment of the death of King Ahab because of his failure to follow God and his disobedience to God's commands. In our discussion for daily  application today we will talk about disobedience in our own lives and  how we need to learn from the examples of constant disobedience to God by Israel's kings. We will talk about being transformed by the renewing  of our minds, focusing today on obeying Jesus. Jesus taught us that if  we love Him we will obey His commands. His command, specifically, is to  LOVE one another, so today let us remember to obey Jesus and God by  focusing on speaking in love by practicing the exercise of "warm  fuzzies" rather than "roasting" or speaking poorly of one another. Since  we are taught that all sin starts in the mind, let us be mindful of  thinking well of one another and specifically working toward SPEAKING  well to one another today.

If you would like to join me LIVE for the daily reading you can register  to attend on my site, here:    https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/schedule

Reflection on Israel and Judah's Kings

00:00:48
Speaker
We are going to have our counting of the Omer as our first step of the day today. If you are interested in counting the Omer with me, just repeat after me.
00:01:01
Speaker
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:01:22
Speaker
Today is the second day of the fourth week and day 23. I have counted the Omer.
00:01:36
Speaker
I actually said ah ruler of the universe, but it should have been king of the universe. I realized that after my mouth said it. i always i I have almost all of it memorized by now. I don't spend time just specifically memorizing it, but ah you would think by now I'd get the words right.
00:01:54
Speaker
Sorry about that. God knows um our intent was pure. So we are reading along in the book of 1 Kings right now. And what we have been seeing and what we talked a little bit about is that Israel and Judah are two separate nations, first of all.
00:02:12
Speaker
So now they have two separate kings. And the kings of Israel are not following God. This is going to be a long line of succession by kings who do not follow God.
00:02:27
Speaker
I mentioned that in the day by day kids Bible, there is a timeline in here. So I was looking through the timeline and they give a picture of, uh,
00:02:43
Speaker
it's It's a really good one. um I don't want to show it to you because I think that that's at least copyrighted, but I will tell you what it talks about. And it talks about the succession of kings.
00:02:55
Speaker
It gives a row of prophets. So who was the prophet during that particular king's time? And it's a timeline that shows who was king, ah not by years.
00:03:08
Speaker
They don't give years, but they give ah the order that these kings appeared. so And then they have a an icon of a crown, and then they have it dark blue for all bad king, all yellow for a good king, and then half yellow, half blue, if they were a good king part of the time.

Applying Bible Lessons for Transformation

00:03:29
Speaker
And as I look at this chart... There across the ah column of Israel's kings across that row, none of Israel's kings are noted for being a good king part of the time.
00:03:46
Speaker
They are all noted as being a bad king. And that's distressing. For Judah, we have two solid yellow for a good king. We have King Isah and his son Jehoshaphat.
00:04:01
Speaker
And at the moment, we are reading about the time when King Jehoshaphat is the king of Judah. After that, he will be followed by three bad kings and then good king part of the time kings.
00:04:19
Speaker
So what we can see is that there is a, ah ah yeah know and then it continues on the next page. But you know as as I look through, Israel's kings are still all bad, clear up into the time when Israel is taken captive by the Assyrians in 722 BC.
00:04:38
Speaker
And there are not that many, fortunately, there are some good kings there showing in Judah. So we are seeing a lot of disobedience And what we are learning is that we are not any different from the people who lived in the Bible's times.
00:04:59
Speaker
There will be people who do follow God part of the time, but there will be people who do not follow God any of the time. And then there will be those who follow God all the time as best they can.
00:05:13
Speaker
ah much in the way like David did. David wasn't perfect, but he did his best. He loved God with his whole heart. And that's what we're looking to do. We know that our sins are forgiven by Jesus, and we now have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

King Ahab's Narrative and Consequences

00:05:29
Speaker
So we know that fruits of the Spirit are peace, patience, and kindness, and that God is love, and we're supposed to do everything in love. So what we are seeing here is that we are really not that different, however, in terms of our behavior and in terms of our human tendencies to not want to obey.
00:05:53
Speaker
god ah Paul tells us that we need to be renewed. by the transformation of our minds. So we are reading the Bible every day and we are looking for personal application every day so that God can transform our minds and give us a change so that we will look more like him through Jesus.
00:06:18
Speaker
So that is our ultimate goal. And that is why we do this. So as we read through and we see the mistakes and the behavior patterns that are so pervasive throughout the kings, we need to look at those with the eye of what not to do.
00:06:37
Speaker
And that is where we will be today, looking again and seeing how the kings are not obeying the way they should be. And we need to examine ourselves to see where we also are not obeying God.
00:06:52
Speaker
Because none of us is perfect. And we all are in process of being transformed by God.
00:07:01
Speaker
So today we are going to read about ah King Ahab.
00:07:08
Speaker
And you remember ah yesterday... that when King Ahab went to war with the king of Aram, who was king of the Arameans, Arameans, that he struck a deal with them again.
00:07:26
Speaker
And instead, God had told him that he was supposed to win the battle and kill him. And he said that since he did not ah kill him, his life would have to be taken instead.
00:07:42
Speaker
So today we will see the fulfillment of that.
00:07:48
Speaker
This section is 1 Kings chapter 22, and we are going to read about the prophet who told the truth.
00:07:57
Speaker
King Ahab talked to his leaders in Israel. The city of Ramoth belongs to Israel, he said, but the king of Aram has it. We aren't doing anything to get it back.
00:08:10
Speaker
Now King Jehoshaphat from Judah was visiting King Ahab. So King Ahab asked him, would you fight with us at Ramoth? Yes, said King Jehoshaphat.
00:08:22
Speaker
I'll go, my people will go and my horses will go. But first you'll have to ask God about it. So King Ahab got his prophets together and there were about 400 of them.
00:08:35
Speaker
Should we fight Ramoth or not? Ahab asked. Go and fight, they said, and God will help you win. Now, both kings had their king's robes on, and they sat on their thrones by the gate.
00:08:49
Speaker
All of Ahab's prophets were telling them but what would happen. They were saying the kings would win. One prophet was named Zedekiah.
00:09:01
Speaker
He had made some iron horns. He said, You will win with these, and you will get rid of Aram.
00:09:10
Speaker
Uh, don't you have any prophets from God? asked Jehoshaphat. Well, there's one man we could ask, said Ahab, and his name is Micaiah. But I hate him. He always tells me bad things.
00:09:25
Speaker
Oh, you shouldn't say that, said Jehoshaphat. So King Ahab called for one of his leaders. Go get Micaiah, he said, and bring him here. The leader went to get Micaiah.
00:09:38
Speaker
He said, all the other prophets are saying Ahab will win and you should say the same thing. Give a good answer. I can only say what God tells me to say, said Micaiah.
00:09:51
Speaker
And he went to see King Ahab. Should we fight Ramoth or not? Asked Ahab. Go ahead, said Micaiah. How many times do I have to ask?
00:10:03
Speaker
Said Ahab. Do I have to make you promise to tell the truth? So Micaiah told the truth. I saw your army in my mind, he said.
00:10:14
Speaker
They were running here and there and they were all over the hills. They were like sheep with no shepherd. God said that these people have no master and he said to let them go home.
00:10:27
Speaker
He said to let them have peace. See, Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, I told you he always says bad things will happen. Micaiah said, hear what God says.
00:10:43
Speaker
I saw God sitting on his throne in heaven. All the armies of heaven were around him. Some were on the right, some were on his left. And God asked, who can get Ahab to fight Ramoth and die?
00:10:58
Speaker
One being said one thing and other beings said other things. At last a spirit came up to God, said Micaiah. Ahab, this spirit promised to get you to fight.
00:11:11
Speaker
God wanted to know how the spirit would do it. I'll get Ahab's prophets to lie, said the spirit. And God said that plan would work.
00:11:23
Speaker
He told the spirit to go and do it. So God is getting your prophets to lie, said Micaiah. God plans terrible trouble for you, Ahab.
00:11:35
Speaker
Then Zedekiah, one of Ahab's prophets, walked up and hit Micaiah in the face. God's spirit was in me, said Zedekiah.
00:11:46
Speaker
How did he get to you? Oh, you'll find that out on the day you hide, said Micaiah. Take Micaiah away, said King Ahab. Throw him in jail and don't feed him anything but bread and water.
00:12:01
Speaker
Leave him there until I'm back safe from this fight. If you stay safe, then God didn't talk through me, said Micaiah. Everybody remember what I said.
00:12:14
Speaker
Then King Ahab and King Jehoshaphat went to Ramoth to fight.
00:12:20
Speaker
Ahab told Jehoshaphat, You wear your king's robes, and I'll dress like somebody else. And that way nobody will know who I am. So King Ahab dressed in other clothes.
00:12:32
Speaker
Then the two kings and their armies went out to fight. Now the king of Aram had 32 chariot leaders, and he gave them orders. um Only fight with King Ahab.
00:12:46
Speaker
Don't fight with anybody else, he said.
00:12:51
Speaker
So the chariot leader saw King Jehoshaphat. That's King Ahab, they thought. So they started to fight him. But Jehoshaphat shouted and the men saw that he wasn't King Ahab.
00:13:02
Speaker
So they stopped chasing him. Then a man shot an arrow. And he was not really trying to shoot any special person, but the arrow hit King Ahab.
00:13:16
Speaker
And it hit him in a place right between the places of his heavy armor. Turn around, called King Ahab to his chariot driver.
00:13:27
Speaker
I'm hurt. Take me away from the battle. The battle lasted all day. King Ahab watched, leaning over in his chariot.
00:13:39
Speaker
His blood ran down onto the chariot floor. He died that evening. The sun was going down and King Ahab's men who were fighting called out, Go back home, everybody!
00:13:54
Speaker
So the people put the king's body in a grave in Samaria. They washed his chariot in a pool there. The dogs licked Ahab's blood up.
00:14:07
Speaker
It happened just like God said it would. King Ahab's son Ahaziah became the king next king of Israel. He was a bad king too.
00:14:19
Speaker
He was just like his father and his mother Jezebel. He worshiped the idol of Baal and he made God angry just like Ahab had done.
00:14:31
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:14:36
Speaker
So what we hear is we what we see here today is disobedience
00:14:42
Speaker
and distrust of God. He still remember when God was so gentle and and had called Elijah to call the people to get rid of the ah prophets of Baal.
00:15:00
Speaker
And they called for Baal. And then he didn't, of course, appear because he's not real. And so the people said, God is the king. God is Lord. God is Lord.
00:15:12
Speaker
And so all of the prophets from Baal were killed.
00:15:17
Speaker
Did King Ahab turn toward God? No, he didn't. He brought out a prophet when Jehoshaphat said to bring out somebody and ask for God's word on it. And that man brought out a pair of iron horns and said that this would help them win over the king of Aram.
00:15:40
Speaker
That is not of God. So we see here that God was fulfilling what he had told Ahab would happen, that all of the his family, he and his family would be killed and that he saved the trouble for after his son, but that his life would be in exchange for the kings of Aram's life that he had saved.
00:16:04
Speaker
We see that God killed him. We see him doing it even through his false prophets. God can speak through anybody, anybody he chooses.
00:16:15
Speaker
So even though these were not prophets of God, Jehoshaphat said, do you have any from God? And they could feel king ah the the prophet Zedekiah knew that God's spirit was upon him.
00:16:30
Speaker
But God's spirit was upon him in order to bring destruction to King Ahab because Ahab was not following God. And he didn't like what the prophet told him when he told him the truth.
00:16:44
Speaker
ah Let's see, Micaiah.
00:16:47
Speaker
So he he was not trusting in God and he was still not obeying God. And we see that as a result of that, he paid with his life. Everything God said would happen, happened.
00:17:03
Speaker
How many times do we know the right thing that God wants us to do and yet we don't do it?
00:17:12
Speaker
That's a question only each of us can answer. Do we want to be like the kings of Israel where we see what God is telling us to do and we are not obeying?

Promoting Positive Speech and Affirmations

00:17:26
Speaker
We need to be sure for our daily application today that we are listening to God and that we are obeying God. We are not supposed to be of the world.
00:17:38
Speaker
We are not supposed to be ah conformed to the ways of this world. He was following the ways of the world, King Ahab was. And instead, we are to be set apart, just as we prayed in the counting of the Omer.
00:17:55
Speaker
God has set us apart by His commandments. He has given us commandments to obey and ways to be. We are to follow God and His ways and to not be conformed to the patterns of this world.
00:18:09
Speaker
But instead, we are to obey Him and trust in Him. And each of us has our own responsibility to obey God in our lives. And that is our daily application today.
00:18:22
Speaker
We don't want to see ourselves being punished with consequences that come from not obeying God. We have seen that we need to protect our mind with what we hear and what we see, because our mind is where sin starts.
00:18:42
Speaker
So let's look at what we are listening to and what we are watching today and every day. But today, that's our daily application for what to be specially aware of because the enemy wants to start in our minds and he wants us to develop sin by thinking about things that are not what we should be thinking about.
00:19:03
Speaker
But instead, whatever is righteous, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, think on those things. Let whatever comes out of our mouth be from God and be of love.
00:19:14
Speaker
For out of the mouth comes the overflow of the heart.
00:19:21
Speaker
I was thinking recently about
00:19:26
Speaker
how in our world, it is so easy to say bad things about people, and to speak poorly of people. We even have TV shows dedicated to what we call roasting, of speaking bad things about people.
00:19:41
Speaker
And people watch these things and we're basically watching somebody be made fun of and insulted. And yet these are considered great entertainment. They do it with famous people and they get other famous people to come on and and to say bad things about people.
00:19:56
Speaker
Are these things that are of God? We are supposed to only speak things that build each other up. And so God had put that on my heart as well, is to when we speak about people and to people,
00:20:11
Speaker
We need to ah speak how God wants us to speak. When I was in school, we used to have ah an exercise called warm fuzzies. And so I want to encourage us today to speak warm fuzzies about people.
00:20:26
Speaker
Because ah when we what that does is we would pass around a sheet of paper. and there would be every student in the classroom would have their turn. So there may be 30 kids in the class, let's say, so there would be 30 days in the month approximately. You don't go to school on Saturdays or Sundays, but you get the idea.
00:20:47
Speaker
So eventually everybody's turn ah would have a piece of paper passed around and everybody would write one positive thing that they saw about that person.
00:20:59
Speaker
And then that person at the end of the month or at the end of the day would be given that ah particular piece of paper that had all the nice things that their classmates thought about them.
00:21:12
Speaker
Because so often in school, kids are mean to each other and school is just a small interior community that's really rather expressive of the exterior world.
00:21:24
Speaker
Out in the world, people are driving and they're yelling bad things at each other. People go to work and they say bad things about each other. Everywhere we go, we it's very easy to say bad things about each other.
00:21:37
Speaker
And so I want to encourage us to speak warm fuzzies. And it starts in the mind. So it can be especially hard for brothers and sisters who spend, and family members, who spend so much time with each other that we just want to complain and have bad things to say about one another.
00:21:56
Speaker
And since change starts at home, then I am going to ask that we start looking at our family members differently. It can be so easy to tear down our family members.

Closing Reflections and Community Engagement

00:22:09
Speaker
Once we learn how to build up our family members, it will be easier to build up those outside of our family in the world. but well But God starts us from the inside and works it outwards.
00:22:23
Speaker
So we have to practice at home before we can take this out into the world. So I wanted to encourage us about our spouses, about our brothers and sisters and parents and our neighbors, people who are close to us, that when we start to think negative or bad things about them, to try to replace that thought with one of love, a warm fuzzy.
00:22:47
Speaker
so that we can have our minds transformed and obey God to do ah to speak and think about what is right and so that God can examine our hearts and we can learn to live out of love.
00:23:02
Speaker
Jesus says that our first commandment is to love. So let's obey God in love and to try to ah speak warm fuzzies about each other.
00:23:15
Speaker
Now that has not specifically about related to what we saw today with the disobedience and the distrust, but let's use that as part of our um obedience to God, because that's Jesus's first commandment. He says, if you love me, you will obey the command, you will obey me.
00:23:35
Speaker
And my, his command is to love. So let's narrow it down and try to make sure that we are loving with our fellow family and friends today, as well as to look at other areas where we may be in disobedience.
00:23:49
Speaker
But I want to give us something positive to to think about specifically and do as well. So thank you very much for joining me today. I hope that you have found today has lit your light and that you found it thought provoking and and helps your day go along better.
00:24:07
Speaker
I hope that everybody has a fantastic rest of their day. And I'm thankful that you have been joining me today, whether it's on your favorite podcasting app or whether it's by video.
00:24:18
Speaker
And if you feel that God has lit your light, please click that light button if you are able to. i don't believe that kids' accounts can click the light button. I believe you have to be on an adult an adult button.
00:24:29
Speaker
an adult account when you're viewing ah we've had some comment about that lately ah that and they were unable to click that light button also you can show your light by clicking follow or subscribe that's another way to do it on avenues such as apple music spotify other avenues of podcasts that don't necessarily have a light button but have a follow or a subscribe button because that will help let other people know that, hey, this event is getting a lot of ah people listening to it. What's going on over there?
00:25:02
Speaker
And what's going on is that we're reading the Word of God, and we want to spread the word about reading God's Word. So thank you very much for reading God's Word today with me, and I will see everybody again, or be here for everyone again if you're listening on audio, tomorrow.
