Introduction and FA Cup Overview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I am your host today, Dan Tanner, and I am joined by fellow Palace enthusiast, Alex Way. How are you doing, mate?
00:00:23
Alex
Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks, Dan. Got a bit of, a as you can probably tell, a bit of a cold. So my my voice is a bit more husky than usual. um um But yeah, it's it's all good, mate. We're into the next round of the cup. So yeah, feeling feeling good, feeling happy.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you probably got the cold of being the ah the man on the ground on the weekend. So we'll try and ah we'll try and work around that. But I think for the most part, I think it'd be all right. But as wally as a Alex just said there, that we made it through to the next round of the FA Cup for the first time in probably a couple of years. So we're probably going to start off talking about that.
00:01:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then at some point, we'll then talk about some other matches that happened in the fa cup for and the FA Cup as well as talk about our next round fixture. And then finally, as it is, we are going to have a midweek game. It's also going to be a preview show. So we're going to have a nice little gab about Leicester City as well, just as they're going to be coming up on the fixture list fairly soon.

Crystal Palace vs. Stockport Analysis

00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
sorry Alex, as you were a man on the ground at Celos Park yesterday, what were your kind of views on the Palace game, the FA Cup Fixer? Because what I was alluding to like watching the BBC live updates and all the social media was that we dominated in the first half, scored early, and then in the second we basically did what I'm going to call a Palace special and almost let stop port back into it to make life difficult for ourselves. Is that pretty much what happened or am I misreading social media like obviously?
00:02:09
Alex
na hi Nice. I think you're yeah, you're you're on the nose there, mate. It's we started so well, obviously, with that as a goal after a couple of minutes. And it's just you sort of when that goes in, you're like, oh, you know, it's going to be five or six. But I think credit to Stockport, like they they defended really well and and did make it hard for us. But overall, yeah, we we didn't really utilize any chances that we had in the first half. I think Munoz had one.
00:02:35
Alex
where he like slid in and tried to tap in like an SA cross. But other than that, there wasn't too many chances in the first half for us. So yeah, I think Stockport did really well actually, they made it difficult. But I think yeah, like the team we put out, we should be scoring two or three at least against Stockport.
00:02:54
Alex
And then they actually had chances in the second half, like we were we were right behind the goal when they stopped what we're shooting towards the family stand that end. And Matt Turner had to make a couple of saves to keep us in it, which we had that feel like you said a palace special like as the game edged on, it was like, oh, my God, get another goal. Otherwise we could be in in the trouble here. But um yeah, like Loma went through Mr. An actual open goal.
00:03:20
Alex
The Venny had a great chance, I think, in Ketia, headed one over. And it's just like these guys, especially, especially someone like in Ketia, you know, they should be scoring that and making a statement like they they're on the fringes of the team. It was a great chance for them and to show what they're capable of. But yeah, they didn't really didn't really show up. To be honest, the second half was dire. Like I would have rather been um the stockball end, to be honest. i more more opportunities than us. And they were a bit more lively. So yeah, it's a bit like game of two halves, really. Like after the SA goal, we should have scored more. We didn't, but eventually we got through. But yeah, I would just like to say as well, like, I always love when we play against lower league teams at Sellers Park. Like, there's always like a massive respect between us. I just think we we understand what it's like to be down there in the EFL.
00:04:14
Alex
And yeah, I always have a lot of respect for the for these teams that show up in massive numbers to Sellers. And they were in great voice yesterday. They out sung us. I'm saying that's because of the cold weather. We didn't, we went up for it. But yeah, I just love seeing these teams come down and like make a name for themselves at Sellers Park.

Respect and Squad Rotation Challenges

00:04:32
Alex
I just, I enjoy the mutual respect between the teams. And I mean, I'm glad we went through, but yeah, it was, it was a good day out all in all.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm very much glad we went through ours on BBC, refreshing the live feed over and over and over again, going, can we just go through please please? Can we just finish this one off and not do what we always do? Because it's very much a thing. of we We start off brilliantly, like like you said, the first half, very dominant, very sort of in control of the situation. But as usual, we don't have that killer instinct just to take control of a game that we should be.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
and against Stockport we should have been very comfortably 2 or 3-0 by the end of the the final whistle because I think I said something like that in the yeah but preview show on Friday where I thought it would be very comfortable 2-0 but from what I gather from it it was also a kind of a ah ah rotation rotated squad as there were a lot of players that were there was apparently some sickness that was going through the squad also apparently According to the Crystal Palace website, the man of the match was Kamada, who definitely, i from what I gather, was not as good as you say, and especially ro she looking at your face, you're not in total agreement. What would be your thoughts on Kamada getting mad at the match?
00:06:00
Alex
Yeah, that's a surprising one. Yeah, I mean, as I was man of the match, like, hands down, he scored the winner, he set up a few chances, could have had a couple of assists as well of his gut as his goal. He was a clear man of the match, like, there's no doubt about it. So whoever's putting Kamada out there is wrong, like,
00:06:21
Alex
he He played all right, like it wasn't his worst game, but he's had some shockers for us. So the the start of the bar is pretty low, but um yeah he was probably like six out of 10, Kamada, like some good touches, getting in some dangerous positions, but he's he's nowhere near the kind of level that we we need at the moment.
00:06:41
Alex
if he's challenging players like Eze and Sa, who are doing so well this season, and Mateta, like in those forward positions, he's got to up his game a bit more because, yeah, I mean, a six out of 10 against Stockport isn't good enough. He should be, you know, getting ah ah at least a seven or an eight, getting an assist, getting a goal. Yeah, I'm quite surprised by that, to be honest. But yeah, he wasn't my man in the match anyway. Eze 100% takes that.
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
this is this is very much from the palace twitter account or the the official palace thing that was sort of voted for by the by the fans and i'm not sure if that's the official one i'd have to properly look that up but very much the sentiment on social media while i was flicking through them all was why is camada on the pitch why is he here and learner as well was apparently not exactly on film either as you still mentioned mr sitter But it's very much a thing that we still need to be able to finish off games.

Women's FA Cup Schedule Update

00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Getting draws here and there is fine, but especially against a ah club that we should be but winning fairly comfortably. Also, that being a slight correction from the previous podcast that I said that the Women's FA Cup game was also on Sunday. It was postponed. I'm not sure why.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
probably because something to do with the Sutton Ground, whatever it's called now, what was previously Gander Green Lane, is as that's where they play their home games. But that has been rescheduled for the 14th of January. So essentially, as of recording this, tomorrow evening. So just slight correction there, because we've kind of mentioned it as well, that they were happening at the same time. But but British weather being what it is, and especially what it's like now, not surprised.

FA Cup Fixtures and Insights

00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
that I think that pretty much wraps up all the FA Cup, especially when it comes to the Palace side of things. We're going to take a quick break and thank our provider here at Zencast and then we'll carry on talking about the rest of the week at the weekend fixtures, namely the star-studded main event of Man United Arsenal and maybe one or two big shockers.

Global Sports Podcast Network
And now we are back to the Daily Palace podcast. We are now going to talk about some of the other results in the FA Cup last, on the weekend, namely the Man United Arsenal game, which just had everything really. It had, two I think, two two penalty shouts, one that should have been or one that wasn't. had essentially handbags at dawn constantly fouling and pushing over and just being really really like not exactly the best game of football to watch and then after all that it comes down to penalties. Oh yeah I also forgot there was also a red card in there too so it had everything for the neutral but if you were Arsenal or Man United fan you must have been absolutely tearing your hair out for the performance they put on
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Any other thoughts on that, Alex?
00:10:31
Alex
I mean I didn't actually watch it because I was obviously at the same time as Palace but we were we were getting the updates through and it was like yeah, 0-0 at halftime, it was like oh yes seems like a bit of a boring game but then it all just started kicking off and it was like oh my god there's a red card there's a goal it's won all and from what I can gather Arsenal fans are a bit aggrieved that they they They should have won it. Like you said, a couple of penalty shots and stuff like that. Um, don't think the Arsenal fans were too happy either with United's tactics, but I quite enjoy it to be honest. Like as a team that used to employ those tactics under like PULIS and Allardyce and stuff, I have a bit of a soft spot for it, especially when it's a big team like United, you know, time wasting and like pushing people and being a bit of a nuisance. I just love it. Like, you know,
00:11:22
Alex
when you look at the the players they've got as well like Bruno Fernandez is a world-class player and he's ah like you know taking the mic just like employing all these tactics to slow the game down and stuff which is great. I'm actually pleased that United went through I think Arsenal I just yeah they sort of have got on their high horse a bit recently and yeah I just feel like they need to be slapped down a peg or two you know they're Yeah, I just I'm I'm glad you United had went through but out of two out of the two of them I'd rather neither went through but someone asked you so Yeah, yeah, at least it was united. I suppose
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, I didn't actually get to watch a game. I managed to just about get in when the ah penalty shootout started and Kai Havertz is penalty with probably one of the most lackadaisical things I've seen in a while. It's just just so like he didn't feel like being there, which is basically summed him up completely. A top quality player that if on his day he can be really good, but more often than not, he doesn't look like he's bothered. But.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
That has been the the the big fixture of the f FA Cup weekend, but you've also got the the giant killings, which happen to be Brentford going out to bottom of the league without a win in a long time Plymouth Archisle, who only recently sacked their manager, Wayne Rooney. So they go to Brentford and go and beat them 1-0 in the 82nd or 84th minute something like that so there was at least one giant killing in the yeah third round which are always fun. It's maybe not be a proper like league two beating a Premiership one but a Championship one especially one that is a struggling at the moment with Plymouth Argyle. You've got any other fixes you want to bring up but Alex?
00:13:25
Alex
Yeah, I quite enjoyed the Tamworth versus Tottenham game. I saw the first half before I went out to Celeste, but um yeah, that kind of had Neil-Neil written all over it from the start and Tamworth had this guy, one of their fullbacks, can't remember his name. I think his name was like Tank or like he's genuinely like tonk Tonks or something like that and he could he his throwing was like 50 yards and were talking about in the pregame build up and everything and I was like I love that like you know when the big boys come to town you've just got this guy like launching the ball in from all areas of the pitch causing havoc like it's proper Sunday league kind of level stuff but it's absolutely great so I'm glad that they held Tottenham it's a shame they didn't get over the line because they lost 3-0 in extra time but
00:14:11
Alex
Yeah it would have been amazing if Tamworth knocked out Tottenham in the Cup but it's not meant to

Underdog Stories in the FA Cup

00:14:16
Alex
be. Also I suppose like a shout out to Bromley as well who went 1-0 up at Newcastle that was quite impressive but obviously I didn't hold on and lost 3-1 but Yeah, to those travelling Bromley fans, I'm sure there are probably a few Palace fans in the mix who he went up there as well to support Bromley. That was quite a ah ah good one that would have come off. But yeah, other than that, it was all quite routine, wasn't it? Like Man City and Man City and Liverpool getting big wins. like You don't want to see that, do you? You want to see a bit of like chaos the first
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think, yeah, the Man City and the Liverpool ones were essentially local Darby's as well. So it's definitely the go to so Man City going to Salford and then go and thrash them absolutely annihilate. I think it was 8-0, I think. And then you've got Liverpool, I don't want to be losing to Akrington Stanley. that just be They wouldn't be able to walk around sort of Liverpool at all if they did that. So they're going to get a nice routine 4-0 victory.
00:15:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, more or less, they everything else is pretty routine, but I do love some of the stories that come out of lower league ones. Like you were saying there, the guy that can launch, do a long throw in and just absolutely heave it. You just just find some random stories as you go down the league. It's really entertaining when they are they start to so they get on the BBC or something like that and all these reports have to go and find something about them. Oh my God, they will dig around for ages.

Preview: Premier League vs. Leicester City

00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
right i I think we should, unless there's anything else we want to talk about for the FA Cup, I think we can move on. We'll do a quick advert break to thank our ah network here and then we will go on and do a preview of the next Premier League game which was going to be Leicester away.

And now we are back with the final part of today's Daily Palace, brought to you by the Global Sport Forecast Network, as you've just heard from my brilliant advert reading. We are now going to preview the next Premier League fixture, which is Leicester City away. So let's basically get into it, really. Leicester at the moment are not having the best of time. They have only one, they have one point in the last six games.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
They are, I think, second from Bottom in the League. They haven't won a game since the beginning of December. And most of these ones have been pretty bad results when it comes to Leicester. I think they lost 3-0 to Wolves. And I think it was also another 3 or even 4 against Chelsea. 3-0 against City.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and It's very much, Ru Van Dystora is still trying to get some kind of format of these guys and it doesn't seem to be working. So what, if you've got any thoughts on Lester at the moment, Alex?
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he's still there.
00:17:52
Alex
Yeah. Sorry, mate.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, technical difficulty.
00:17:54
Alex
Yeah. Yeah. Classic. ah Yeah. So let's start. Yeah. Interesting one. Like I actually thought they were better off without van Nistoroy, to be honest, from what I've seen so far, he hasn't really done loads to rectify their problems, which is conceding goals.
00:18:14
Alex
And I think they're conceding more goals under him than they were when Cooper was at Uh, in charge. Uh, and yeah, like you said, like they've had one win since when this throw took over, uh, and dropped into the relegation zone. but I mean, they look at their squad, they've got some really good players. and I think that they can be quite dangerous. And for us, like going in, I think we're four unbeaten now, four in a row in all competitions. And for us, this is like a really tricky one.
00:18:45
Alex
It's sort of like worse almost than the Man City at homes or you know the Liverpool at homes. I feel like these these games are a bit tougher for us, especially when a team's out of form. like We're a team that a lot of our positions seem to just find something and and pull out a magical performance against us. So I'm really sort of skeptical about this game. on on when It's Wednesday, isn't it? Yeah, I just don't know about it. like I feel like it could be a tricky one for us. Yeah.
00:19:17
Alex
I mean, they've only had two home wins this season at home, is sos so at the King Power. So we should be looking to try and capitalise, but yeah, you know when you get that feeling and you're just like, ah, lesser away on a Wednesday, Wednesday evening in January, it's not for Palace, that one.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
You just go, I have a bad feeling about this.
00:19:41
Alex
ah.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, still relatively confident. I think we are one of the, form-wise, one of the best better teams in the league at the moment. But as I think I alluded to earlier against Stockport, we have this great habit of not really taking control of a game. And Leicester are at the moment are one of those ones where we on paper should be all right and should get a fairly comfortable 1-0 because that seems to be our sort of style at the moment. Just try and get a 1-0 victory minimum requirement. Cool.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
but this they do have some fairly decent players and Vardy has a great habit of being a real pain in the backside, especially his speciality of scoring against Palace and beating up the offside traps and things like that. It's very, very annoying when he did it at Stellers Park at the beginning of the season with the 2-2, which after looking at the schedule, that's when we started to hit a bit of form. So it could be a good omen, it might not. But yeah, it's it's I've kind of got the same incoming feeling because there's only so long that our luck is going to hold out and we're kind of pushing it at the moment. Yeah, but I'm still somewhat confident of a 1-0 victory. That's my score prediction. We're still all right.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah I don't see us completely controlling it. It's going to be a goal early, much like the Stockport game. We'll score in the first five, 10 minutes and it'll be very much backed against the wall and hope that we don't concede, especially if we've still got a lot of these say injuries, like the illnesses to a lot of star players. So that's my score prediction. What would yours be, Alex?
00:21:39
Alex
So I'll probably go for a 1-1 I'll take a draw just to keep our unbeaten run going and to Obviously get a point to move further away from the relegation zone Yeah, like if we play like we did on Saturday Sunday, sorry against Stockport and some of those guys play and don't perform to the level I think we could be in for a real tough evening at the King power but Yeah, I'm going to go with one all. I think Lester will go at us quite early on. So there might be an early goal with my prediction, but the other end to you, Dan. And then I think it'll be like, you know when we played Ipswich away midweek like in yeah m in December, I think it could be similar to that maybe, where it's a bit scrappy. Neither team really has complete control of the game. It's got a proper sort of bottom half Premier League feel to it in this fixture.
00:22:34
Alex
But yeah, 1-0 I'd be happy with. If we can get 1-0 like your prediction, I'd be absolutely, yeah, i over the moon with that.
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
and oh I'm definitely expecting it to be scrappy. It's a palace going there. We don't do it any other way. We are not stylish. We are not fluid in any way, shape or form. It's back to the wall and pray that something goes right. It's been that way for a long time. We've never really had a great um team when it comes out.
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
All these big clubs like Liverpool and Man United, they can rotate their players out and there's an actual difference. ours are the The difference between the first team and the second team are so many you won't notice and will still play the same way regardless of who's on the pitch.

Conclusion and Future Fixtures

00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
so yeah it's good yeah um I just see it being scrappy and I expect against West Ham on the weekend to be very much the same thing as well. It's it's our style.
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
unless there is any other business we want to talk about I think that's not a bad place to leave it there because we've got two games this week so i we'll have a another preview match preview podcast in the next couple of days so I think we will leave it there it's been a pleasure having having you on Alex
00:23:53
Alex
Yeah, cheers done. Pleasure, mate, as always.
00:23:57
