This episode was amazing! We loved breaking down Hannah's episode and diving into her memories. So many questions answered!
Laura and Noah do beg the question, are you okay with going to the movies alone?

Introductions and Weekend Plans

00:00:24
Speaker
Guys, welcome back to Fans of Flan again. I'm Laura. And I'm Noah. And we're kind of awake here. barely barely we got this we got this this is going to be an extra loopy podcast possibly it is it is morning time so um We'll see how it goes. It's just the end of the week. Yeah. We're both just done. ah We're just ready. We're just ready to sleep. Ready for a Saturday of nothing. Do you usually fill your Saturdays with things like errands or dates or do you take it easy?
00:01:13
Speaker
I try to take it easy because I'm usually running errands throughout the week um because I have the mindset of oh the work week is for work not always just work work but anything that needs to be done around the house anything like that so I try to get a bunch of cleaning done errands all that kind of stuff um going out and seeing people because that trains my energy a good amount Um, because I just love staying in and watching movies or playing games, whatever. Um, and my amazing, lovely wife, uh, we'll try to plan stuff. I'm just like, I really don't want to go out. You got to compromise maybe like every other Saturday or something. No, no, yeah I say that, but it's an exaggeration. We don't do it all the time. Yeah.
00:02:08
Speaker
Is Saturday when you use your AMC movie pass?

Solo Outings: Movies vs. Dining

00:02:13
Speaker
I use it whenever, honestly. and just citizen We'll go like during the week, but there really isn't anything out that we want to see. Do you have to go by yourself? Oh, absolutely. Yeah. What do you what do you think about like going to the movies by yourself? Because a lot of people are divided on this.
00:02:32
Speaker
I totally am fine going to the movies by myself. I have a great time by myself a little snack. And I'm just, nobody sits next to me. You know, like other people in the theater, they're like, who is this weird owner? I used to do that frequently. I think you're either a can't eat alone in a restaurant or can't see a movie by yourself person.
00:02:58
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I have eaten in a restaurant alone, but it was odd, but I was catching up on some work. So I was like kind of, you know, doing something. So it wasn't too bad.
00:03:12
Speaker
But i i I don't think I could go to like a Chili's or um any other sort of equally fine establishment. and so
00:03:25
Speaker
No, I don't blame you. But movies is no problem. But I know people who would never, ever go to the movies by themselves.
00:03:34
Speaker
No, I I love doing it.

Sleeping Habits and Pets in Bed

00:03:37
Speaker
It's like a. self-date. The self-date. Yeah. Although I did go see the War of the Rahira, the animated Lord of the Rings movie that just came out a little bit ago. Yeah. I walked into the IMAX theater. It's like midday on a Thursday, I think.
00:03:56
Speaker
And I walk in and there's one other woman and then maybe a quarter of the way throughout through the movie. It's still just us two. And she just gets up and leaves. She's like, oh, yeah.
00:04:14
Speaker
That's amazing. You stuck it out to the end, though, didn't you? Yeah, to I did. I actually said before you didn't. Huh? No, I was gonna say I just changed sheets and changed. Change seats. Like middle, middle. I was in the middle, but I went all the way to the back just to see how it was. You like to sit in the back? I was trying it out. I didn't hate it. Okay. Okay.
00:04:42
Speaker
As far as like types of people, I feel like where you prefer to sit in a movie theater is another type. Like there's people that are like absolutely nowhere but the back. And I'm kind of a, I like the middle and the middle, like that cross section, right? Yeah.
00:05:03
Speaker
yeah That's no one causing all that noise. It's not me. It is my cat. It's my cat. I told him to get out and he goes out and then he was licking my toes. Stop licking my toes, you weirdo. He loves doing that. I put some socks on.
00:05:28
Speaker
I don't like wearing socks. My feet get all sweaty.
00:05:40
Speaker
I'm laughing because I can't sleep if I don't have socks on. Oh, I just hate that feeling. I just I couldn't do it. Yeah. I i don't know when it started, but that's what I'm used to. So.
00:05:55
Speaker
Do you have to have a fan on? No, but that's my husband. He's the fan. He's the fan sleeper. um And I sleep cold, meaning like I get cold when I'm like falling asleep and I can't sleep if I'm cold, so I have to be like all bundled up.
00:06:13
Speaker
you know and he when he's falling asleep he just gets like hot like his whole body just turns into a furnace so he has to have the fan on for the noise and for the for the the chill the comfort um but he works nights so sorry You get the bet by yourself. I get the bet to myself. No fan. All the covers. No one's stealing them. All the blankets I want. No one judging me for my socks. It's fantastic.
00:06:51
Speaker
whenever Whenever she travels for work, because now she ah has to go to like New York and I think Boston this this semester.
00:07:02
Speaker
I'm by myself for like maybe a week or so at a time. And whenever she's not here, I let the cat sleep in the bed with me because she doesn't like, she doesn't want them in the bed at all when she's here. So I'm like, you guys can sleep with her. There's nothing for all of us. Excuse me. Excuse me. You okay? I'm okay. I don't know what that was, but I'm okay.
00:07:34
Speaker
I can't have animals in my room at all. They wake me up. I don't blame you. Yeah, no. No, when we get cats don't care each time. Yeah, they don't sleep all night.
00:07:54
Speaker
Both times we've gotten a new kitten. We keep them kind of in like one area of the house before we let them out to the rest.
00:08:04
Speaker
So that that's been the only times I've allowed a cat in my room was when they're you know brand new to our home. So that's it. Yeah, I don't blame you. No.
00:08:19
Speaker
We used to have it so that our bed in our last apartment, our bed or our room, the cats couldn't go in at all. And it was probably better for my allergies.
00:08:33
Speaker
Yeah, but we moved here. I'm like, why not let them in the room? You know, they can be with us if we ever just want to lay in bed and do nothing. She's like, fine.
00:08:47
Speaker
And if you can't tell I'm stuffy and I'm like this all the time and do to yourself I'm used to it. I don't care anymore. Okay.

Watching Movies Independently

00:08:56
Speaker
Speaking of movies though.
00:08:59
Speaker
Have you ever gone to see a movie and then your wife is upset that she saw it without her?
00:09:09
Speaker
Not so much that because I know what she likes to watch. It's more so shows. it's If it's like a show that ah that I'm interested in and I don't think she would be and I start watching it and she's like,
00:09:27
Speaker
You started watching that without me? It didn't seem like you would like it, so I started watching it.
00:09:38
Speaker
So I show she'd on her sometimes. Did I tell you? I can't remember what I've said. Cory watched The Shining without me for his first time. Oh my word.
00:09:50
Speaker
He I after a while I stopped recommending like shows and movies because he would just be so dismissive as husbands can be. um it You're like no comment.
00:10:07
Speaker
But one of his friends was talking to him about The Shining. And so then he was like all jazzed up to watch him like, yeah, let's do it. Love to watch The Shining with you for your first time, because I wanted to see his reactions, you know, because I had seen it already. I had already read the book, but that was like 10 years before.
00:10:23
Speaker
ah And then one morning when he was staying up all night to get back on his work schedule, he goes, Oh, watch the shining last night. It was pretty good. I'm still not over it. It was months ago. I'm still not over it. I can't believe he did that to me.
00:10:43
Speaker
<unk>t Wasn't cool, man. Not cool. I get it. But I also, like I get both sides. Yeah.
00:10:56
Speaker
Oh, I didn't. yeah I didn't know you wanted to watch it with me. I was like, really? All those times I said we. We.
00:11:08
Speaker
It's such a non-issue, but it still bothers me. What are you going to do? Anyway, have you been watching anything new, exciting, fun, noteworthy? No, I have. I have not really been watching anything.
00:11:25
Speaker
Any new books or podcasts? Uh, no. I am, I am around maybe a hundred pages to being finished with wind and truth. Amazing. Um, there's so much I want to talk to you about. I'll get there. I will. Yeah. It's on my mind. That's the first step.
00:11:50
Speaker
Other than that, not really anything. Um, I want to go see Wolfman and there's a showing at like one 45 today. So I may go out and see it. So we'll see. Talk about seeing movies by yourself, by the way.
00:12:08
Speaker
Hmm.

New Shows and Reviews

00:12:11
Speaker
You're so funny. Were you judging me, judging me pretty hard over there? No, I'm just like, I remember the days when I could just like get up and do whatever I wanted. I'm not complaining. I'm just reminiscing. I am trying to take advantage of it as much as I can. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Cause I'd do that. I'd have a day off and I would just go watch a movie. Yeah. Good times. What about you?
00:12:41
Speaker
Um okay so Hulu put out another season of Goosebumps. Right. It's fun. Okay. It's not like amazing but it's a fun watch and I really like how they take different it's like one book per episode right but they they uh make it into like a streamlined story instead of like anthology style. And I know I talked about the first season, but this new season has David Schwimmer in it as one of the characters. And it's, it's just been really, really fun. Kind of gross. The graphics are intense and it's spooky, but it's been fun. Um,
00:13:27
Speaker
I tried out a new medical show, and I think it's been out for a minute. I don't know when it came out, but it's ah called The Pit. It's on HBO. And it's like just about doctors in the ER. r So I watched the first maybe two episodes last night. It's a little too realistic.
00:13:53
Speaker
And I know I had already complained about medical shows not being realistic at all, but this one is just a little too much. So I'm still, I'm on the fence right now, if I'm going to keep watching that one or not. Um, cause it's a little chaotic as you know, busy yeah ERs can be. So I don't know.
00:14:19
Speaker
something in it is bothering me. So I'll have to think about if I want to keep watching that one or not. Did you see that any ah promos for that movie? I have to I pulled it up because I wanted to ask you if you were going to see it ah better, man. OK. I I've seen the promos. Yeah. And
00:14:52
Speaker
Like, say I don't even know who that is. He's like a British icon. Like, he's like a superstar yeah in England, right? And I've heard of him before, um but they made the main character into a chimpanzee. Yeah. Yeah. um And we both have like chimpanzee trauma.
00:15:17
Speaker
um
00:15:26
Speaker
Was it episode three? I think it was. Episode three of the fall of the House of Usher. Yeah. If you know, you know. But there was also another piece of media that came out recently called Nope, the movie Nope. Uh-huh.
00:15:50
Speaker
I can't remember if I watched it. but By Jordan Peele? No, i am I know of it. I just am trying to remember if I have seen it. I don't think I have. It wasn't graphic, but it featured a scene with a monkey and I just I've never really liked monkeys because they scare me.
00:16:09
Speaker
I, that story, there's a news story that came out when it happened of the woman's pet chimpanzee attacking her best friend and it's graphic and gruesome. And I, yeah just even the hearing about it on the news has traumatized me ever since. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:16:32
Speaker
So this movie better, man, I saw a little video clip about somebody talking about it because it had a $10 million dollars budget and it's barely raked in over just a bit over 1 million in the States, barely over 8 million in international numbers. So there may be broken even, but I don't understand why it has a 7.7 out of 10 on IMDB, like who's.
00:17:01
Speaker
everywhere that I've looked. Critics like it. Critics like it. Yeah. Everywhere that I've looked, it's gotten really good reviews. Yeah. I just don't think it's bringing people in because, again, who is

Movie Discussions: Hits and Misses

00:17:15
Speaker
this guy? Why should we care? It's another musical biopic and this got, this time about when we need more of that only like a British superstar, which only the British seem to know. Right.
00:17:33
Speaker
Are you going to go see it? Oh, no, absolutely not respectfully. I'm okay.
00:17:43
Speaker
I don't know what interest I would have in it. Uh, and they made him a chimpanzee. I don't, I don't know if I could, and if it's good, then okay, but I'm fine.
00:18:00
Speaker
There was a 1250 showing I could go see. Yeah. Like report back. No, i' I really don't want to go see it. I don't even, I don't even want to go see a complete unknown either. Oh, which one was that one? That's the Bob Dylan one with Timothy Chalamet. Oh, I think I'll watch that if it ends up on streaming somewhere, but I'm not going out of my way. I like, I'm a, I like Timothy Chalamet. Mm-hmm.
00:18:29
Speaker
I know some people don't, but I'm a fan. I think he's done great in everything that he's done.
00:18:37
Speaker
Did you see that they're making a series, um, for that book and movie holes?

Upcoming Adaptations and Casting

00:18:46
Speaker
I did not know.
00:18:48
Speaker
Yeah, they're gender swapping the main character. I don't know if they're gender swapping anybody else if they're going to make it a girls detention camp, or if it's going to be boys and girls, which that wouldn't make any sense. But um I don't know, the movie is perfect. So I don't know what they're doing.
00:19:10
Speaker
Why? Why? don't because there's a Who's out there saying, hey, yeah, you're right. You're absolutely right. Speaking of which, speaking of which, have you seen the cast, the rumored castings? I don't know if they've actually come out for him, but for the new Harry Potter show, I've only seen people guessing, um,
00:19:39
Speaker
I know people really, really want what's his face to be Snape, but I think they've already cast Snape. Yeah. You know who I'm talking about. Yeah. I can't remember his name. Al, Adam, Adam, Adam driver, driver, Adam driver. Yeah. He would have been a good choice, but they're changing. it up
00:20:05
Speaker
What are you going to do? I don't know how I feel about it. Because on one hand, I'm really excited because they could be way more faithful to the books. But will they be? And it's sounding like it's they're not. So. Yeah. We'll see.
00:20:25
Speaker
um
00:20:29
Speaker
We will see.
00:20:35
Speaker
I don't know why they're not getting the message that all like the really good pulling like numbers and money projects are the

Box Office and Original Content

00:20:44
Speaker
original stories and look more like independent.
00:20:54
Speaker
yeah I honestly don't know if that's the case though. Okay. Let me see if I can look something up.
00:21:05
Speaker
I don't know how Mufasa is doing in the theaters. That's that's what I was just going to pull up.
00:21:19
Speaker
Well. It's a cross 500 million globally. And Moana two nears the one billion mark, and that was five days ago. So.
00:21:36
Speaker
they we're hoping for more from Mufasa than 500 million worldwide. That's not a big number. I am also going to read off the top 10 list of top lifetime grosses. Okay. um This is coming from box office mojo. So I don't know know how accurate this is actually going to be.
00:22:01
Speaker
ah But I just want you to to pay attention to what movies are being listed. Number one, Force Awakens. Number two, Avengers Endgame. Three, Spider-Man No Way Home. Four, Avatar. Five, Top Gun Maverick. Six, Black Panther. Seven, Avatar The Way of Water. Eight, Avengers Infinity War. Nine, Titanic. And 10, Jurassic World. And out of how many of those,
00:22:29
Speaker
our original pieces of work. Like two.
00:22:41
Speaker
So are you considering like the ones that are part of the franchise not original, even though they're not like a remake? Yeah, because it's technically like a sequel. It's like a continuation of that story. OK.
00:22:57
Speaker
I mean, I you could you could make the argument that. Like ah a the Marvel movies, they're telling something different, but. Well, even Titanic was kind of a ah remake. Mm hmm. So.
00:23:18
Speaker
Yeah. Anyway, anyway. Oh, well.
00:23:29
Speaker
They're struggling and they're trying to, I don't know what I was gonna say. They're still trying to push the the Marvel, which I guess if they can squeeze more money out of that, good for them. right Yeah.

'Bly Manor' Episode Five Analysis

00:23:48
Speaker
Well, are we ready to get into this episode because, i oh my gosh, it was so good. I think this was the best episode so far in the whole season.
00:23:57
Speaker
It was really good. It was fantastic.
00:24:03
Speaker
So today we're talking about episode five, the altar of the dead. Um, I actually ended up watching it twice. I'm so glad I did. Cause the first time I was taking my notes and really trying to keep up so we could break down the episode. And then the second time I just got to enjoy it. And it was so good.
00:24:27
Speaker
Like every single thing about it, all the details, the dialogue, the progression of the episode was fantastic. Okay. Excuse me.
00:24:47
Speaker
opening scene we're at the bonfire with Hannah sitting in front of it and she's staring down at a wine bottle with the narrator talking about her and I can't remember what the narrator said but it was something about her finding like comfort or safety in her routine and it had always worked like going back to the into the house
00:25:14
Speaker
And it was it was really relevant what the narrator was saying at the very beginning, because like her going back to the house and just go moving on with her routine had always worked for her so keep that in mind, I think.
00:25:30
Speaker
um Owen's sitting next to her and he says he learned from taking care of his mom that you can't really count on the past and conversely we can't count on the future either. Hannah says she can assure him that he really can count on his past and his future.
00:25:48
Speaker
and they're having a really cute moment there together by the fire with the wine. It seems like they're both a little bit drunk. Owen is talking about what he might do next that he might go back to Paris and says that Hannah can come too. He says he wants her to live and he really emphasizes the live. This was the conversation that they were having while Jamie and Danny were in the greenhouse in the last episode.
00:26:12
Speaker
They flash back to when Owen and Hannah first meet in Bly Manor. She's interviewing him for the job of the chef. We learn that this is when he had moved back to his hometown to begin taking care of his mom. He had been in Paris working as a sous chef.
00:26:28
Speaker
And she hears someone calling for her, saying they're here. She excuses herself and walks into the next room but when she opens the door, it's the master bedroom and her outfit is different. And she kind of looks confused. From behind her we hear the same voice call for her telling her that the wind graves are here.
00:26:44
Speaker
And we know it's not present day because we haven't seen this other member of staff and um the bedroom isn't covered in sheets and she's opening the curtains to let the lights in and the parents are alive. She goes outside to greet their family. Peter's there, the children, the parents. She turns to walk and oh and the uncle is there. I didn't notice that till the second watch through but the uncle was there.
00:27:11
Speaker
She turns to walk inside but now the house is dark, the lights are off and she's confused again. She walks back through the door and back outside and it's nighttime now. The same two cars are there so it kind of seems like it's while the family is still there.
00:27:28
Speaker
and she starts sobbing and crying and wailing. um Mrs. Wengrave is outside and hears her and asks if she's all right. And Hannah mentioned something about Sam and how he's happy and it's,
00:27:46
Speaker
we presume that he's, it's her husband and her husband has run off with someone else. That took me a couple of times to understand what was going on.
00:28:00
Speaker
uh mrs windgrave offers for her to stay at the house and says forever if you need to the scene changes again and i've i've am i being oh i think we missed something okay no jump in if i'm going over something that uh is important please
00:28:23
Speaker
Did you see it whenever she walked in the house the moment ah when she the moment before she came out and started crying? Uh-huh. Did you see anything in the house? I didn't. All right. Should I ah so good should i go around 44 minutes and 18 seconds left. Okay. how How many minutes in is that?
00:28:53
Speaker
Why isn't it showing me? about Because I was looking not specifically for something, but I was looking kind of trying to keep in mind to look in the background. 10 minutes and 30 seconds in. OK. It pauses on the scene of the foyer. Just pause in that scene and look.
00:29:21
Speaker
Oh, what is that? Is it by the lamp? Yeah, and. The glasses, why is his head peeking out like that? There's one more. I'm scared. Why is this freaking me out? Oh.
00:29:49
Speaker
Oh, okay what is that? Ghosts or or something, but I don't know who. Oh.
00:30:04
Speaker
So for the listeners, if you didn't see it in the actual episode, 10 minutes, 30 seconds in around that time, it shows a still frame of the foyer in the house as soon as Hannah walks into it. And if you pause on that screen,
00:30:27
Speaker
There's two of two things of importance on the right side of that. So the the vase of flowers splits the screen in half. So if you look at the vase directly and immediately go to your right, you're going to see glowing eyes and a head right next to the lamp in the background.
00:30:45
Speaker
And then if you go continue, continue to go right across that right stairs of the pair of stairs, you can see a figure standing in the darkness in the shot. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Wow. Thank you. Of course.
00:31:08
Speaker
And Hannah sees it and then she goes back outside. You think she sees it? Oh, absolutely. She looks back and forth between them. cash She's like, not today. I'm not going to deal with that. Well, from what Flora says later, we know that there are others. She calls them others. Okay.
00:31:33
Speaker
But I just can't remember like if they ever like make it obvious about the others or if they're all just going to be sneaky and hiding. So it's weird that the the glasses, the the the reflecting glasses is there because that would mean that that's when she walks into the house. So this episode time jumps because it's all memories.
00:31:56
Speaker
It's all Hannah's memories. She's revisiting right after this event happens that we'll learn about later. um So that means when she walks into the house and it's dark, that's when Danny is there, right?
00:32:11
Speaker
I don't know because it just... Because then why would that be appearing in the house? Maybe it's a different person. Well, it's got the round glasses. Come on. It was hard to see. It was in the background. Yeah. And I could like Netflix doesn't let you take screenshots or screen record. And I just have my phone. So it's hard to yeah see close, but that's, that's what I'm going to say, because every time, not every time, but most of the times when she's changing scenes, like it's flipping from one event to another, she's in different outfits, like her clothes change every single time. So I'm going to say.
00:32:51
Speaker
that that's what it was, that it was when Danny was there. But then when she turns around and walks out, it's back when the wind graves are still alive, when she wasn't living at the house yet. A lot of context clues that are putting together all of this information for us. ah That was a good catch. That was so scary. Yikes.
00:33:17
Speaker
Okay, so Mrs. Wingrave offers for her to stay at the house and she says forever if you need to.
00:33:25
Speaker
um Our scene changes again and now Hannah is in the woods. Different outfit and Miles is walking by and it's kind of hard to tell if this is a flashback or if it's present day. um Jamie's up on the ladder clearing the roof of debris on one of the buildings on the property. I don't know if that was a church or like a shed or a different building on the property but um Anyway, Miles goes over to the ladder and just starts shaking it. And Jamie comes down and is yelling at him, and he tells her that she's pretty when she blushes.
00:34:02
Speaker
All I could think about in that moment was, do you know CinemaSins, the YouTube video ah youtube um channel that would do the everything wrong with movies?
00:34:12
Speaker
No, no. Anyway, it's a really funny channel. You should go see them if you have a chance. They do a whole bunch of stuff. Um, but one of the common sins that they have against the movie is characters eating an apple. So, you know, that character is a blank hole. Oh, so I was like, that's kind of funny that, well that must have been you know,
00:34:39
Speaker
Yeah. And the, cause after he says that he takes a big old bite dot out of an apple and then he hands it to Jamie. Yeah. I didn't know that was a, like a trope. but Oh, it's a trope either that or chewing gum. Really? Yeah. So he did that on purpose then with the apple. Oh, maybe. The director. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah.
00:35:07
Speaker
He's telling us this is a bad guy, but that's funny. Okay, so Hannah comes up to like correct Miles and then all of a sudden she's wincing in pain and grabbing the back of her head and it flashes over to the bonfire and Hannah is drinking wine and it's Owen with the same words again about how we can die at any moment so we can't count on our future nor our past.
00:35:32
Speaker
We flash back and Hannah is in the house cleaning. Peter walks by. This time it's when Rebecca is there and is arguing with Peter and it's the argument about the cake batter. Hannah is at the door and totally just like staring in and listening in. After Peter notices that she's had been watching them, he makes a comment for her to live a little. So he like kn confronts her in the hallway and he's like, you need to live a little. I love all these comments about her. like be alive, live a little, be at the house forever.
00:36:12
Speaker
She turns to the wall and she sees that same crack pattern. And that say and she sees that same crack in the wall in that same pattern. I don't know why that was hard for me to say. The scene changes again. It's a different part of the house. And now it seems like it's evening.
00:36:30
Speaker
Peter is going through the drawers in the master bedroom and takes something. um It's a necklace that's supposedly very valuable, very old. Peter says that Henry asked him to get it. Henry's the uncle. Hannah accuses him of stealing. They have a very tense exchange and Peter tries to remind her that she's the help. When Peter walks away she looks at the red wall and there's the crack pattern again and then it changes to a crack in stone.
00:36:59
Speaker
The scene changes to Hannah going downstairs and there are muddy footprints on the ground. She walks outside. There's a strange silhouette standing by the edge of the water. She turns around, but it's Rebecca at the water. She turns around.
00:37:13
Speaker
The scene changes back to interviewing Owen again, and he's explaining how he left Paris to come back to his hometown and is excited to expand his skills instead of just being a sous chef. And it says, haven't we already done this? And no one says, yes, we have, but we have to do it again. He says, why? and And he says, you tell me.
00:37:34
Speaker
He launches right back into the same sentence word for word, but I like how it like each time it's like different. The characters know in the moment kind of like what's going on, so he's just like reading lines instead of it being the real moment. That was a cool ah a cool um sequence.
00:37:57
Speaker
This time, Owen asks her about Miles, asks if he's good or if he's cruel. Owen asks if Miles would ever hurt her, and she is very uncomfortable with that question. Suddenly, it switches to Hannah catching Miles smoking outside in the garden. Hannah says, she understands if you want to hold on to the lighter that Peter gave you, especially since Peter has just run off, but he may not smoke. She says, I shouldn't be laughing at this.
00:38:27
Speaker
But she says to him, you'll die a horrible, choking death.
00:38:35
Speaker
Miles laughs kind of sardonically, and he like walks walks off. He's like, honestly, Hannah, honestly. And he ends up running away. She walks into the church looking for Miles, but he's not there. There's a woman in the pew, and it took me a moment to realize that that was Mrs. Windgrave, the children's mother. Hannah's dress is different. The woman says she lit a candle for her. The woman explains the candle is for Sam. He's alive, but he's a special case.
00:39:03
Speaker
And she offers Hannah's position to be live in employment. Hannah insists that Sam will be back. And that's when I kind of figured out, oh, Sam is her husband. I kept getting lost, which is why I watched it twice.
00:39:23
Speaker
So then Mrs. Wingrave disappears and hannah peers are not han excuse me Rebecca appears next to Hannah on the pew. Hannah's outfit is different. And Rebecca has the butterfly clip in her hair. And she's probably had it in her hair before, but it was the first time I noticed it. It's the one that um that Miles gives to Danny in the beginning of the season.
00:39:53
Speaker
Rebecca is trying to the sorry of y'llli rebec has tried to justify her relationship with Peter and Hannah is trying to warn her about him. ah Rebecca gets upset and storms off and Hannah follows her through the door but it's a brick wall.
00:40:11
Speaker
In the corner of the church now is Miles with the lighter opening it, starting it and closing it. He has a cigarette in his mouth. It cuts to the kitchen with Owen and Rebecca. Owen is trying to get Rebecca to taste the stew he is cooking. Peter comes in and takes Rebecca with him. Hannah is sitting in a chair. Okay, so the first time I watched it, I didn't notice the table. It was just odd because like the chair was sitting there. It seemed like the chair was in the middle of the room, but like in the further shot, there's a table there, but it's still.
00:40:41
Speaker
awkward, like a little unsettling how it just looks like she's just by herself in the middle of the room in a chair. I don't know what that means. It was just seemed like it was very deliberate. That makes sense. Yeah. So anyway, it's just Owen and Hannah in the kitchen now.
00:40:57
Speaker
um She's talking about a mouse being stuck on a glue trap and how the mouse had to chew its leg off to get out of the trap and Peter is the glue trap and Rebecca doesn't realize that she's stuck. The scene flashes back again to Owen's interview and Hannah is aware that this is happening again and again in the interview he says he'll be stuck in this glue trap of a town. Hannah says we've talked about this and Owen says no not yet but I thought about it a lot after you said it.
00:41:29
Speaker
um Owen then gets really intense and yells with the a word denial at her. um Hannah gets upset and she calls the whole situation very morbid and she walks through the door but it's straight into a bedroom in the night time where Rebecca and Peter are cuddling in bed and sleeping. They wake up and they're chatting while Hannah is watching. Peter says he's leaving but he has to tell her something and I know you're right.
00:41:54
Speaker
His chest is very hairy. I forgot about that. Just calling it back.
00:42:06
Speaker
Peter says he's going to do something big for us. He tells her to get her bags packed and be ready to go tomorrow. I don't know why they didn't just leave right then. I don't know. All you need to do is just swipe the thing. He could have taken her with him.
00:42:23
Speaker
Yeah. To get the money unless he didn't want her to know how he was getting the money. Anyway.
00:42:33
Speaker
I got lost. Hold on here. His chest hair, you know. i know
00:42:45
Speaker
he starts He starts getting dressed and putting his clothes back on. Yeah, yeah. Oh gosh, it like scrolled all the way down. I'm so sorry. Okay, here I am.
00:43:01
Speaker
There it is. Okay, so his scheme involves something with having money and moving them both back to America. both to america Peter walks right past Hannah and out the door and doesn't see her at all. Rebecca remarks about how this is one of her favorites, like favorite moments. She doesn't find herself in this one too often, but she likes it when she does, like she's speaking about this moment as a memory or a dream. This is a moment when something happens and tells Hannah not to go out into the hallway. um She says, I think this is when it happens. Peter runs into Miles in the hallway. It's still nighttime. Miles mentioned something about there being something wrong with Flora's dollhouse. Peter goes into the master bedroom area of the house and Hannah is there as if she kind of teleported. Peter is back to the drawer and is taking that same necklace. Flora and Miles are in the hallway. The white lady
00:43:59
Speaker
Sorry. It, it's startling. Like it is coming. Yeah. Yeah. There's like actual jump scares throughout this whole episode. So.
00:44:15
Speaker
So he walks back out into the hallway floor and Miles are still there and he's like, I thought I told you guys to go to bed. All of a sudden the white lady walks by, just grabs him by the neck and drags him through the house effortlessly.
00:44:30
Speaker
And we see for sure that she has no face. um She drags him around the corner like into that bedroom area, I think. And then there's a moment where, like, everybody is just kind of staring, like the children are just staring in shock at what just happened. And then Peter walks out from around the corner where he had just been dragged in and he tells the children to go to bed. The children are confused at what they had just seen and said, what did she do to you? And he's like, who, Rebecca, you're an not old enough for that.
00:45:04
Speaker
um Flora is holding the doll of the white lady and she calls her the lady from the lake asks if he remembers and she hands him the doll and then it drops through his fingers and he can't pick it up for a moment. He finally picks it up from the floor and Flora says she's seen her before and that the others say to stay away from her and Peter asks what others.
00:45:30
Speaker
The white lady comes back from around the corner and is dragging Peter's dead body behind her. peter By his neck, a horrible choking death. Yep. Peter says to the lady to let him go and then Miles, and then he puts his hand on Miles' shoulder and Miles starts saying, let me go. I couldn't see the rest of your note. What did it say?
00:46:01
Speaker
Oh, that was it. It was just, I knew it. I knew it. Yeah. Yeah. No, we called. It was pretty. It wasn't, it wasn't like a huge twist. No, but it was interesting to see like how it happened. What are the rules with it? Like, cause I think it's kind of like in and out, like Peter himself is.
00:46:23
Speaker
taking control on purpose. I couldn't remember how that all worked out. It was nice. time Yeah, I didn't either. Yeah. um Peter says, let me go puts his hand on my shoulder and miles start saying, let me go. And he's looking at his hands. And yep, we guessed it. I wrote that down. We guessed it. Peter is inhabiting miles. Now, Hannah is outside.
00:46:54
Speaker
And she watches the lady dragging dead Peter into the bog like it kind of looks like really spooky, not like a calm little pond.
00:47:05
Speaker
um Hannah turns around and jumpscare. Rebecca is there, but it doesn't look like her hair is wild and her eyes are white and it really scares Hannah. The scene suddenly shifts back to the interview with Owen as he says, this is an opportunity to hone his skills. Hannah says again, and Owen says, Hannah says, again? And Owen says, yes, apparently we are doing this again. Hannah says she's having a very strange dream. They're all so strange, like it's somebody else's dream. Owen starts talking like he's trying to wake her up. He says, you need to remember it's 1987. Peter is missing. You think the wind graves are, Peter is missing, comma, you think?
00:47:44
Speaker
The wind graves are dead, Rebecca is dead, and there is something wrong with Miles, and which is outside where Miles is putting out a cigarette and playing with the lighter. We next see Miles standing with Peter over by the well, and Hannah goes to confront them telling Peter to stay away from Miles.
00:48:04
Speaker
Hannah is trying to get Miles away from the well and now Miles is speaking like Peter. Okay so I missed it the first time but watching it the second time it's when Peter puts his hand on Miles's shoulder that Miles starts talking.
00:48:17
Speaker
as if he's Peter, right? Yeah. So it's totally deliberate when Peter is in charge of miles and then he's not. So I think we had mentioned in one of the episodes before that it's kind of like it's, it's miles, but then it's like a grownup. Um, so it's not all the time.
00:48:39
Speaker
Um, so miles. Okay. So miles is speaking is okay.
00:48:48
Speaker
Let me get myself straight here. because ah Okay. So as Miles, Peter is asking if she's ever tired of being a bore and just leave things alone. Things were going so well. um Miles is getting upset and Hannah is realizing that Peter is Miles and that Peter is dead. Miles gets angrier and angry and pushes Hannah down the well.
00:49:13
Speaker
where she hits the bottom. I couldn't tell if she dies like right away because it kind of looks like she's breathing a little bit. um But she's got ah her eyes are open and she's staring at that crack in the wall of the well that she had seen everywhere else. So now we know where that crack pattern is from.
00:49:35
Speaker
um Now Mrs. Gross is standing at the edge of the well and Miles is asking her what is happening. Miles says I'm having a very strange dream. Then Flora runs up and introduces Danny behind the tree. Peter is there watching them. The scene cuts to the bonfire where Owen is explaining we can't count on the past.
00:49:57
Speaker
He learned that taking care of his mom. We think we have the past trapped in our memories, but memories fade and we can die at any time. He says we should go to Paris and eat croissants and drink good wine and live, live you and me while we still can in Paris.
00:50:14
Speaker
Hannah says, yes, I will go to Paris with you. The scene is playing out how it did, but Hannah is saying, wait, I will go to Paris with you. And she's trying to run after Owen. She's asking him to wait. She says to herself, she says her name, the year, the ages of the kids, Miles is 10, Flora is eight. I am Hannah Gross. I am at Bly. She repeats this to herself over and over the end.

Listener Gratitude and Future Plans

00:50:44
Speaker
what an episode oh my word seriously so now we know why danny is seeing peter all over the place because peter is there just like hannah is there neither of them can leave neither of them can leave yep i don't know if it's ah the entire season or if it's just this episode. But the in this episode, it was the theme was very heavily about dementia. About what? ah Dementia. yaning Dementia. Yeah. OK. Oh, yeah. And how Hannah flits back and forth between the memories that she has and
00:51:37
Speaker
um Oh, I had a whole, whole speech ready and I just, it's completely gone now. Uh, just the, her, how she kind of hops back and forth between memories and time in her own head. It yeah feels like maybe what having dementia would be like. I got neither of us can say what it actually is, but just losing yourself in your memories. A lot of the ah conversations were like, um,
00:52:09
Speaker
if that's what it was kind of meaning to me or what it was trying to get at. Um, and especially when like that the ah faceless lady, like losing yourself and like, uh, the conversation a couple of episodes ago about how you're slowly losing yourself, um, every day and that kind of thing. It just,
00:52:38
Speaker
made me feel like this episode, episode's theme was about dementia and all, all that kind of stuff. And again, there's more stuff that alludes to it and, um, supports it. But I, again, I just completely forgot about all of them and and can't talk about it. Um, so I'm very professional. Um, but that's what, just what I got from this episode. I think there's something to that.
00:53:07
Speaker
For sure. It totally makes sense. Yeah.
00:53:15
Speaker
Yeah. I'm going to have to digest that for a minute because I didn't catch that at all. And even when Owen like says like my mom thinks it's 1962 and that I'm my grandfather, he's like setting up the whole thing.
00:53:34
Speaker
and at the bonfire at the beginning when he says memories fade so you can't count on the past and then he says you can't even count on your future because you could die at any moment so the whole episode i mean this was hannah's episode absolutely peters too but it was hannah's episode um
00:54:01
Speaker
Yeah. Cause she, okay. Yep. No, it's, it's just really good. And I honestly want to go back and watch it a third time to try to see what else I can pull from it. Yeah. Yeah.
00:54:25
Speaker
But I didn't really have much else. I think that sort of sort of sort of speaks for itself. Right. Yeah. A lot of the dialogue and the dialogue carries hard in this episode. It's really good. It really does. Yeah. Yeah. There was that one moment when I think they were in the interview the third or fourth time or whatever. And Hannah asks, she says, oh, and right. Like you are Owen.
00:54:53
Speaker
And at first glance, she's asking, you know, because they they presumably have just met in that interview. Like, that's your name, right? But it kind of carries more of like a, yeah, sure. Okay, is what he says. I guess so. So it's like, who is she talking to? Is she talking to herself in that repeat? Because it's a repeat of a memory. So is she like talking to herself or who
00:55:21
Speaker
Who is that? Yeah, there were a lot of questions I did have from this. um Like, why are these people staying here when they die? Like, is it sort of like haunting of Hill House where it's just that's the ah like the setting does that to them? Like, is that what it is or what else is going on? So for yeah Hannah,
00:55:50
Speaker
She stays there. And what the narrator had said at the beginning, the storyteller said that Hannah comforting for her is going back to her home and to her routine. And she says several times in the episode that lie is her home and she's never leaving her home. So for her. She knows something is off, but I don't think she realized that she had died.
00:56:17
Speaker
Hmm. And so she just kind of went back to her routine in her home, because that's what she does to kind of fix things in herself. So that's why she's there. Peter makes it known that he is stuck.
00:56:36
Speaker
And he didn't realize he was dead until he saw the lady from the lake, like dragging his physical body. Like he had no memory because the kids were like, didn't you? What just happened? Are you like, what is going on? He went back to moments before when he had just taken the necklace because he walks from around that corner, looks at the necklace, puts it in his pocket like he had done exactly before that.
00:57:04
Speaker
So what would have happened if he like didn't realize he was dead? I don't know.
00:57:12
Speaker
I don't know, but we can presume that the ghosts are essentially stuck on the property. But then it's the question of ah why isn't everyone's face fading then? Right. And if I remember right, it was because of the time passing passage of time. Right. But we know.
00:57:35
Speaker
Cause we, we know other things and like, I just can't add up all the pieces right now. So yeah it's funny cause I've seen this before. Well, if you're watching this for the first time, you can skip over this, but I know there's an episode coming up. I don't know if it's the next one or one of the ones after that. Um, it might be the two faces part two, um,
00:57:59
Speaker
where we go, like. really far back and we get the lady the faceless lady's history and why she's stuck and why she has this routine of walking through the house and into the lake.
00:58:17
Speaker
So there's more answers coming and I think I think it will all like all of the can all of the the what is happening questions get answered.
00:58:29
Speaker
because I remember the first time watching it being really satisfied with the ending, the villain is the villain, things get explained, you know what I mean? We're ah haunting of Hill House. Didn't do that as well. They weren't as good at at at keeping at,
00:58:53
Speaker
if that makes sense. yeah I feel like I'm not explaining myself too well. Yeah. and And I know you said it before as well. I sure have. know Like the bad guy in this in in Haunting a Blind Manner stays the villain throughout the whole thing. I think we end up with some understanding and empathy for her, but she's a bad guy. She's not good. not ah She's an evil entity. but um maybe watching it again. Because I'm just going off of very faded, faded memories and reactions that I remember having the first time through. So it's fun. We're visiting this and like really diving into everything, all the meanings. But so now we kind of know the rules that Miles is not being possessed 100% of the time. It's kind of whenever Peter decides to, I think it's at his whim.
00:59:49
Speaker
um whenever he touches him. When he touches him and then stays for however long he wants. Cause Danny sees Peter on the property, just like everybody sees Hannah. And I think Peter's purposefully not letting anybody else see him. So maybe there's like another role with like with that, but she sees him on the parapet and in the windows. Um,
01:00:20
Speaker
i I don't know if I understand that whole scene where Miles was like passing out in that other episode and he sees Peter in the window. I don't remember what all that meant. Yeah. But we know Peter is stuck. We know that he can inhabit Miles and kind of stay in him as long as he wants. Yeah. And Hannah drinks. She did in this episode.
01:00:51
Speaker
She did before, because remember she tried the tea i in the very beginning. She tasted the tea, but she doesn't really eat. No, she doesn't eat.
01:01:05
Speaker
So, yeah. More answers, but a lot more questions. Yeah. I don't know if every tiny little thing will be answered, but that's okay.
01:01:18
Speaker
Some of it is, I think it's good to leave some bits unanswered. So maybe audiences could speculate and try to guess. Our own interpretation. yes Yeah, exactly. I like that. I don't like it when every single tiny thing is explained, but I like it when the project as a whole makes sense. Yeah.
01:01:44
Speaker
Yeah, but that's all I had. Me too. Good times. Thank you to all of our 10 listeners again for staying with us. We're up to a solid 15. 15? look at that.
01:02:07
Speaker
Anywhere. Interesting. um just There was one in Norway. One of our friends in Norway.
01:02:18
Speaker
and England, Canada. We have at least, I think, two to four listeners in Canada. That's been pretty consistent, so thank you. And having such a small, like, listening population, it almost feels like just a little community, because I can see, you know, how many downloads in this city, and and it gives me, like, whatever, you know, the demographics are. So,
01:02:48
Speaker
I think not this, I think episode three, we had a download from Australia. Wow. Okay. Um, I'd love to interact with, um, our fans more. Yeah. If you guys think just pop in and like, just like one of our posts or just comment high on one of our posts in, uh, our Instagram page, fans of Flanagan pod. Um, it's yeah, it's fans of Flanagan, um, underscore pod.
01:03:18
Speaker
Yeah. p And it's the only thing that's called fans of Flanagan. So we we're not sure you should be able to find it. Oh, I have a like. Oh, it was me.
01:03:35
Speaker
I thought I liked it. You did not. And you have for a long time. I do. I do share it. You share it on your stories. That's yeah. You for sure shared on your stories.
01:03:49
Speaker
You're right. The last one I did like was back in 2016. I've been meaning to like them. That's not bad. that's my It's okay. One of your uncles will comment every now and then. so That's good. Shout out to my cousin out there. Appreciate your support. Both of my cousins that listen. Yep.
01:04:14
Speaker
Heck yeah. I love hearing from you guys. So comment, interact. Yeah. You don't have to comment anything if you don't want to just, you know, like our posts. If you feel so inclined, you can follow us. Um, we just kind of post like episode updates and, uh, to keep you updated on when we put out a new episode. So, um,
01:04:40
Speaker
If we get more of a following on there, we may be able to interact a little bit more on our Instagram page. um
01:04:50
Speaker
So we'll we'll see how that goes. And we have, not gonna say any details yet, but we've worked out our next project because there's only so many Flanagan projects out there. And so it's gonna, we're gonna run out of material soon. So we've got something else in the works.
01:05:09
Speaker
I'm still waiting for a Life of Shaq, which is supposed to be released in the spring. um That one, I think... I'm excited to watch that. I want to stay away from as is as much of what it's really about as possible. It just says genre bending, so I don't know what that means. But it got great reviews from the film festival. Was it Cannes or...?
01:05:39
Speaker
It's usually I think it's usually cans. Yeah. Cause I don't think it was Sundance. Yeah. But it got rave reviews at cans film festival. Um, so I'm excited to be able to watch that. I don't know if I can handle Dr. Sleep. I don't know. I don't know. Uh, one of my cousins out there says that I think it was which movie that he had done. It was a one from a franchise.
01:06:08
Speaker
And he said it was really, really good. um So we're going to have to throw that movie into our list of projects that we want to talk about if I'm right. And you can you can text me ah if I'm wrong. Ouija, Origin of Evil. Really? Yeah, that's what I said. I was like, really? He's like, okay yep. OK.
01:06:37
Speaker
There's certain types of movies that I don't like. And I pushed it with hush, um, for the sake of trusting that it's directed by Mike Flanagan. And I'm not like upset that I watched it, but there were elements that I just don't, I don't like in, in horror, but I don't want to watch Gerald's game. I don't either.
01:07:04
Speaker
I heard that that one that type of movie where it's like one setting. And it's stressful. I don't know if it's my claustrophobia getting triggered. But um respectfully, I think we're gonna have to skip over.
01:07:22
Speaker
chair Sounds so bad. But we are going to have such a good time with Midnight Mass and probably pick one or two other projects. I don't know if we're going to do Fall of the House of Usher because Noah is what three episodes in and already traumatized. I can go back. I can go back and watch it. I don't know if I want to. Yeah, again, it's totally up to you. Episode two was so rough and then episode three was traumatizing. And then Which one? The Telltale Heart was something. Oh my gosh. Episode five. Yeah, I know. I have to go back. Even if we don't if we don't cover it, I will go back and watch it probably. Maybe we can dedicate like two episodes to talking about the series as a whole.
01:08:15
Speaker
because I don't know if we need to like watch it and like really break it down that much because it's a lot and um that's nothing but praise for for that show because of how unsettling it is. Like if you make me feel things even fear that is a plus to you as a creator because I but almost said I'm dead inside but I'm not.
01:08:39
Speaker
you're um You got calluses. I have so many. I have layers.
01:08:52
Speaker
I was looking through his filmography and he also did another movie. It was. Ouija was rated at six point two. And yeah, they did not get very high ratings. No, but his other one Oculus was rated as six point five.
01:09:09
Speaker
Hmm. And I was yeah when i might yeah interested in that. the The concept of that one looks interesting enough that I might. if If my husband is with me, I might be able to sit through that one. Yeah, because it starts carrying Karen Gillian and Katie Zach. And she's Karen Gillian is in. A life of Chuck to. Is she? Yeah, that one has a really, really good cast.
01:09:39
Speaker
which is another reason why I'm really looking forward to watching it.
01:09:46
Speaker
Tom Hiddleston. He's on the cover. He's on the cover. And then Samantha Sloyan is back. It's got Mia Sarah. Matthew Lillard. This is going to be such a good, this is going to be so good.
01:10:06
Speaker
I have been meaning to talk about a movie and I keep forgetting, but I don't know if this is the right time. and
01:10:14
Speaker
Why not? It's our show. Matthew Lillard did Five Nights at Freddy's. Right. Did you watch it? I did.
01:10:28
Speaker
Dumb movie, right? Like, it's like an, uh, movie, but his performance. He always brings his A game. he He's always good.

but especially great for what that movie was. Like it kind of saved it, honestly. My son had been begging me for like weeks and weeks to watch it with him. um And I'm like, it's just not my thing, man. And then I sat down and watched it and I was just so entertained by their performances that i it made up for it.

Yeah. um I'm excited for our next project and we'll have to workshop our details and probably won't be announcing things until closer to the end of our projects here. Yes. But I'm looking forward to that. It's going to be fun.

It's still gonna be about movies. um But I think that's all we're gonna say about it for now. So yeah, it's gonna be a different title, different show. So we'll keep you guys updated on that. But everybody that I've talked to about it to kind of workshop my thoughts has has given me the thumbs up. sogen of course So I think that's a good spot for us to leave it and take off. Thanks for joining us, you guys. I can't even express like how thankful I am that we have anybody listening to us talk to ourselves. It's fun for us. So hopefully it's fun for you.
