Introduction and Humorous Greetings

00:00:23
Speaker
Howdy! Ahoy! ah realized recently I always only ever greet anybody like I'm a cowboy or a pirate. Howdy or ahoy?
00:00:34
Speaker
Yeah. Ahoy, matey! so Even in my work emails, so if that tells you anything about me. That's funny.
00:00:45
Speaker
um Mostly just, you know, internal correspondence naturally.

Manifestation through Public Calls

00:00:50
Speaker
Yeah. gotta keep it profish with the clients but uh you know i um i sent you that tiktok yeah a little bit ago it was highly amusing yeah it was uh interesting the guy who ah anytime he's in an uber he either gets on a real or a fake phone call And pretends to be high-level corporate like finance consultant.
00:01:22
Speaker
Yeah. And it just throws around all the like buzzwords, the corporate buzzwords. And, giant dollar amounts. We need to get our teams together and do an internal walkthrough and blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:01:38
Speaker
We will not consider anything under $10 million. dollars bla bla Blah, I had seen this guy before and I came across another of his videos um today, tonight, which is what inspired me to like, or to, I thought of this and then sent the TikTok to Christina.
00:02:00
Speaker
But I was like, what a fun little new manifestation tool to use. um where like i and i want to try this and we don't have to like necessarily try it right now but like i do want to try this at some point in the future ah the near future where you and i get on a real ass phone call and we start talking business like serious business like we're making millions and millions and managing millions and millions for other for our clients or whatever
00:02:37
Speaker
We don't necessarily have to be like, you know, finance bros. But... Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Are we doing this out in public? are are we just doing this together, like, in private? It doesn't matter.
00:02:48
Speaker
Okay. I think it'd be and extra entertaining if we were out in public. Yeah! But, like, we can do it whenever we want, really. Because the point is to speak the words.
00:02:59
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And to speak them to each other. and i feel i feel like, I could be wrong, but I feel like sending it through a cell phone signal... might you know amplify the intention <unk> i don't know if that's how it works but i'm gonna pretend that's how it works why not yeah and it's like honestly it's fun because like i my favorite when i was a kid my favorite games were imagination games and to just pretend to be a character okay um
00:03:38
Speaker
And so like this sort of is tapping into that, that cute fun, you know, just like, I get to pretend to be somebody. And there's like no stakes. Kind of like how about a month ago you forced me to speak with a Southern accent after we were done recording.
00:03:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:03:57
Speaker
And it was fun. You have to speak with a Southern accent. Just do it. i was like, oh my God, much pressure. I'm not good under pressure like that. Yeah. But the the ah point of that was because Molly and I were talking, she was talking in her Southern accent with from where family... Southern drawl. Yeah, like her family's from a different Southern area than my other, my experience. my family's from Mississippi. Your family's from Tennessee.
00:04:23
Speaker
And the the accents are different. And so she kind of wanted to hear the differences. And I was like, I've not been around them enough to like really... have it down pat, but I could try. So I was, I was doing my best, but anyhow, back to your point.
00:04:42
Speaker
Yeah. So yeah, i just had that thought. I was like, what a great idea just occasionally have like a business call yeah where we just talk business and like talk big numbers and, you know, bring it existence.
00:04:58
Speaker
Yeah. That, that, that whole concept is actually bringing up something else. Um, that I've been kind of like recently been made aware of, if you will.

The Power of Words as Spells

00:05:11
Speaker
Okay. um And I, I mean, I don't know. It was like, so it was so like nonchalant and like casually thrown out there that I was just kind of like, Hmm.
00:05:22
Speaker
And then I wondered if anybody else has heard this before, but like they sound off in the comments. If you've heard of this, words are spells.
00:05:33
Speaker
yes and that's why they call it spelling oh i've heard that i love that yeah yeah like when you write things and you're spelling things like writing stuff down is like you know we know that that's a form of manifestation like it's a form of like yeah visualization and whatnot yeah um do you remember where you heard that else i don't i was her I was watching something on TV, i think.
00:06:05
Speaker
And it was just like somebody. and it was not that long ago. It was just like a few days ago. But I couldn't tell you where I heard it. Yeah. the The thing that you just reminded me of with that phrase was actually in the car, leaving the Airbnb from our solstice vacation.
00:06:28
Speaker
and I had our friend, from Chicago in the car with me. um i asked her if she'd ever heard of Peachka. I think we were talking about music like musicians that you know you know contracted, i don't know what you call it, to to perform at Anaharas.
00:06:45
Speaker
And I was like, oh I would love if she Ray of Anaharas got Peachka to perform one day one year. um And she's this female rapper...
00:06:59
Speaker
who literally writes her her like songs are like spells isn't that like queen herbie similar yeah but it's a different she's got a different vibe she's got a different voice um and one of the songs because after that i was like oh let me play you some peach god we were totally vibing to it um one of the songs says like um something to the effect of like I'm careful with my words because I know that words are spells and I was just like yeah yeah bitch yeah
00:07:38
Speaker
um or there was I don't remember if she said careful or some other word but like just every thing like they're just not only bops you know they're not only like headbangers but they're like really intentionally written out lyrics Yeah.
00:07:57
Speaker
And so like, I really vibe with that. um But yeah, like words are spells. And also we should do this. This is in the vein of the manifestation idea that we had um that

Manifesting Success through Appearance

00:08:10
Speaker
we talked about.
00:08:10
Speaker
And I think during our manifestation, our episode about manifestation or something sometime in that vicinity, I've lost track. um But where you talked about going out, like getting dressed up and then going out to like you know a restaurant or like a bar where like the rich people hang in your area yeah and like just pretending you like you belong there ah because no reason that you don't yeah and like particularly maybe a place that has a bar because yeah you could sit up at the bar yeah and you could you know make small talk with people around you yeah
00:08:53
Speaker
Yeah. It opens, it like cable gives like some like invitation. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A hundred percent. I feel like when I got, when I do this, I gotta first go get my nails did.
00:09:04
Speaker
Ooh, I know. I've been thinking about my nails a lot lately too. I'm like, I'm so just like lamenting forever about how much damage acrylics do to my nails because I love the way they look and I love the way that I feel.
00:09:23
Speaker
when i have them but they fuck me up me too yeah when you get them taken off like ah they're so thin and weak i know and

Acrylic Nails vs. Alternatives

00:09:32
Speaker
there's ways to take them off that doesn't have to be like you know ground down and like you know wrecked well i'm like why can't i not just say like please don't use that drill Right, but they drill them beforehand. And they think that's when the worst of it happens. because That's true.
00:09:52
Speaker
They really like, they just want to make them all rough so that the acrylic will attach. But it's like, yeah i they've never really drilled mine down afterward.
00:10:03
Speaker
I've had them soaked up and then they scrape them. But like, that and there yeah, I don't know. I hate it. It's bad. Yeah. Here's a thing that I have to say.
00:10:14
Speaker
I was going to say, I probably should just invest in some press-ons. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For those occasions. I've never really tried them. But what were you going to say? I have a friend who does that. Okay.
00:10:24
Speaker
You've met her. You met at the witchy bazaar. Oh, yeah. which The witch's, sorry, the the ball. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. um A friend of mine that I work with.
00:10:36
Speaker
So she uses press-ons a lot. And when when I see them on her hands, I could never, ever tell that they are. That they weren't professionally done. Yeah, because she's had acrylics before, too so But when I've seen her press-ons on, she's just like, they're press-ons. I'm like, no way.
00:10:53
Speaker
I'm like, they look so good. Like, they look like they're totally done in a salon, for sure. Yeah. Fuck yeah. um But i and I ended up ordering myself some for Easter and then I never wore them.
00:11:05
Speaker
but Nice. ah Yeah. Anyhow. one of my concerns with it is just that my nails are so big. Yeah. They have sizes. They do. But like i would need, i don't know.
00:11:16
Speaker
I would just need to sort of visually see because my thumbs in particular, i'm like, he I got the big hands. Yeah. Anyway, sorry, I keep cutting you off. It's okay.
00:11:29
Speaker
um No, I was just going to say like our favorite new nail polish brand. um Yeah. I don't want to name our nail polish brand that we love so much, but like, cause I love their colors like immensely and I will wear them anyways, but like,
00:11:43
Speaker
I noticed that since I started wearing their polish, my nails have gotten so unhealthy and like my, my layers, the layers are splitting and peeling like really bad. And I have to keep cutting, cutting them down. They won't grow out because I have to keep cutting them down because they're so like wrecked and like they rip easy and stuff.
00:12:04
Speaker
I'm really sad. That's weird. i I mean, I guess I haven't really noticed that for myself, particularly because, I can't usually grow my nails out. Yeah. Like they usually already, you know, split or I'm just banging them on stuff and then they split. and Yeah.
00:12:21
Speaker
So, I mean, I guess I shouldn't blame it squarely on the brand because it could just be like my body changing because I'm older now. But like my nails, I never used to have problems like this before. And yeah, your nails are usually pretty nice and long.
00:12:34
Speaker
Yeah. And like I use a really good base coat called Nail Teaks. The brand is Nail Teaks. um My grandma was using them from like way back when in her salon. Like they used it as her base coat and like they really, really, that stuff really, really strengthens your nails.
00:12:54
Speaker
So like you just put one coat on underneath any polish, like, and you keep changing it out. Like I used to do this. Like I would change my polish on my own every week.
00:13:04
Speaker
and file and shape my nails and repaint them. And like my nails grew so long And I could see that they want to, like they keep trying to, me but some of them are like, just said keep, keep shredding. Like they keep like splitting and like, the layers keep peeling and stuff. And I hate it. It's like, up anyway, anyway,
00:13:29
Speaker
anyway, point being, ah yeah yeah yeah we want to get our nails, our mail business in order. And then we'll be like on the town. And here's like extra points. We, you know,
00:13:42
Speaker
do our press on nails or whatever. get dressed up individually, separately, go to our separate like fancy places. And then we do our business call in the fancy place, assuming that they allow phone calls. Sometimes rich people places don't allow you to use your phone.
00:13:59
Speaker
But um
00:14:03
Speaker
I feel like that is a good idea and we should do it. As long as nobody spots the car that I'm getting in and out of.
00:14:13
Speaker
Oh, Lord. Same, name though. Mine's way worse than yours. Bonus points if you just like find like a nearby parking lot. And you park, like, you know, further away and then, you know, walk over. um Just get an Uber.
00:14:30
Speaker
Get an Uber Black. Do they still do those? oh Yeah, I think they do. Yeah. I've always wanted to try, like an Uber Black and just feel like a celebrity. I'll drive i'll drive to like...
00:14:43
Speaker
a nearby place and park my car and call an Uber and they take the Uber like a couple of blocks from there to like the restaurant. and And then, and then leaving Yep.
00:14:56
Speaker
Yes. Perfect. Oh my God. 10 out of 10. Anywho, we have an announcement. Oh yeah. On this, our episode.
00:15:08
Speaker
episode 49 bitches. ah where didn't die Hey, guess what? That's how old I am. I literally was just thinking that. Okay.
00:15:22
Speaker
So in honor of our 50th i designed a bumper sticker. I'm going to give it away to our first 50 Patreon subscribers.
00:15:33
Speaker
50 for 50, Bibbies. um and it's a little irreverent so I'm gonna say what it but like it is not at all meant to be taken seriously so use it as a bookmark or whatever if you want to okay so like you don't have to stick it on your car all right right or you can stick it on a notebook or whatever on your fucking you know Stanley or whatever yeah you water bottle thingy yeah um wherever you want yeah
00:16:05
Speaker
So with that being said, it says, fuck off, I will hex you. no punctuation, bitches. If you are already a subscriber um and you want one of these because you will be counted among the first 50, of course, ah just drop us a DM in our Patreon with your email address.
00:16:32
Speaker
um sorry with your mailing address uh yeah so like we you know in patreon we already know that you're a patron because you're writing to us yeah write us uh with your email or sorry oh my god you're gonna email us yeah With your mailing address. no No, mail us in Patreon and and ah give us your mailing address if you are interested yeah you getting one of these so I can get it in the mail to you ASAP.

Patreon Giveaway Announcement

00:17:05
Speaker
um And if you are a new subscriber, we'll just be watching for the new ones and, in you know, if you don't already write to us and tell us your your mailing address, then we will have to reach out to you.
00:17:19
Speaker
and yeah figure it out. we'll We'll pester you and feel free to say no thanks. Right. um Because you don't have to want one of these. like It's okay. We won't be offended. If you really don't want one, then ignore us and like don't give us your mailing address. Well, don't ignore us because we'll keep bugging you like, hey, are you sure?
00:17:38
Speaker
But then you know if you tell us, sorry, I'm not that interested in that Then we'll be like, okay, thanks. No problem. Yeah. Because like, it's not for everyone. It's got a big swear on it, you know, but it's not a big bumper sticker. It's small. It's an oval.
00:17:54
Speaker
Yeah. You have to be right up on it. It was like three by five or something. Yeah. You pretty much have to be right up on it ah to to be able to read it. So don't know cars on the road can see it. Somebody, if if you do put it on your bumper, somebody has got to be like tailgating you to be able to read it.
00:18:12
Speaker
and that's honestly kind of the point and honestly may not even still be able to read it right like we have not like tested this yeah yeah it's really hard to see so because it's yeah black because it's dark red right on black so it's like meant to not be easily easily seen wait is it isn't the background red no hold on okay i'm all fucking fucked up sorry the background is black and the writing is red that yes okay because i was picturing it the other way around the background being dark red the
00:18:51
Speaker
the graphic being black or the writing being black, but like, you're correct. I would know. I designed it. I know, but I still don't have one. You're going to get yours soon.
00:19:05
Speaker
so excited. so Did you mine in the mail already? Not yet. because i but it is a male I'm going to send it with the other shit that I'm trying to send you. Oh, that's right. Yeah.
00:19:18
Speaker
Yeah. I'm so fucking excited. I too. going to put it on my car and nobody's even going able to read it because my car is black. Oh, and you know, full disclosure, it is a little bit of an advertisement because really small on the bottom, it says SoulPod the podcast. so Yeah. But I mean, honestly, it's our merch and we can do what we want.
00:19:36
Speaker
Exactly. It's free. Yeah. For our first 50 Patreon subscribers. So it doesn't matter also, it doesn't matter what tier you subscribe to. Any tier.
00:19:47
Speaker
Right. So like literally any tier, you know, yeah for sure. So it's not technically right in that regard, but it's worth it because of all the good shit that's all over on our Patreon.
00:19:59
Speaker
So like for real, go check it out, get subscribed, get on that first 50 list. And get you sticker. Don't miss out.
00:20:10
Speaker
Yeah. Do not fucking miss out. Yay! Because who even knows if we'll ever print more and make more and have more in the future. Very true. Yeah. This could be very, a very limited edition. Or you may have to buy one.
00:20:24
Speaker
True. But even like once they're all sold, we may not ever print another one again. We may not. for of the state well We'll do more c search stickers or merch or whatever in the future. like but the the future holds so much possibility, but we can't promise that this one will ever come back once it's sold out.
00:20:42
Speaker
So.
00:20:44
Speaker
So. Yeah. That is that. All right. We have a topic today. Yeah. Yeah, remind me because I don't remember now. no.

Nostalgic Summer Memories

00:20:57
Speaker
ah Bitch, we're talking about summertime. Oh, that's right. And the living is easy. Thank you. Thank you for finishing that line for me. um Yeah, we're talking about summertime, particularly nostalgic summertime.
00:21:19
Speaker
And I know that this is like a little bit out of left field because it's not really political. It's not really like social issue stuff. It's not really witchy. It's just vibes.
00:21:34
Speaker
And sometimes...
00:21:38
Speaker
Let's just sit back in the water. I don't even know that is. No! Yes, you do! What is it? Fresh Prince, man. Oh, I don't know what that is Will Smith.
00:21:51
Speaker
I know what Fresh Prince is. I've never watched it. No, it's his music. Will Smith. It's Will Smith's music. As a solo artist. Oh. He's been a solo artist. you say Fresh Prince? That's a separate thing. that's what came to my head first.
00:22:06
Speaker
Yeah. okay is the first i've never watched that show also i have not listened to will smith i've listened to willow smith i don't know who that is oh is that a kid okay in a punk band oh nice yeah well pop punk but whatever same diff anyway he has a song called summertime or something like that and it's cute and i've always liked it yeah yeah and there's even a song called summertime i believe by sundays which is lovely lovely beautiful song love it so much remember that was one of the first bands you excuse me introduced me to yeah i like kind of forced you to listen to it while you were in a shower and i was like i put it on really loud in the fucking bathroom while she was in the shower
00:22:56
Speaker
Yeah, okay. i I can dig it. I can dig it. It's like not my favorite, but it's pretty good. Summertime is really cute. Yeah. yeah I have like that whole one album that has like a fossil on the album cover.
00:23:11
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Yeah. How do you have that? I downloaded or I added it on my fucking Apple Music. That should be the one that I played for you. it was. Yeah.
00:23:21
Speaker
it's called I think you told me about it initially, but don't play anything. No, I'm not gonna. Good. I just want to make sure that I'm thinking of the actual, the right album. Cause I almost said the name of the album. Then I thought, wait a minute, is that the sugar cubes or is that the Sundays?
00:23:36
Speaker
but Oh shit. Reading, writing and arithmetic. Is that what it's called? That's the name of the album. Huh. Reading, writing, and arithmetic.
00:23:47
Speaker
Yeah. Interesting. ah Yeah, because the one I was about to say is actually the Sugar Cubes here today, tomorrow, and next week. Cute. bad Check it out. Listen to them if you are not already familiar.
00:24:00
Speaker
oh my god. The Sugar Cubes. Oh yeah. I was like listening to them the other day but and I was just like, oh my god, I love them so much. I haven't heard them in so long. if you If you're not familiar, that's where Bjork first came from.
00:24:14
Speaker
It was her band with her Icelandic homies. Fuck yeah. Fuck yeah. Fuck yeah. Okay. So anyway.
00:24:25
Speaker
Anywho.
00:24:28
Speaker
So yeah, um this is not witchy. It's not politicky. It's just vibes. And frankly, I think that that is like the undercurrent to our podcast.
00:24:40
Speaker
Mm hmm. In my opinion. um I just... So I get really nostalgic about summertime. Summer... I mean, I feel like a lot of kids, 90s kids, you know, 90s kids, whatever.
00:24:54
Speaker
They do. Because it was like the ultimate like freedom time outside of school. And i just... There was no...
00:25:07
Speaker
I just did not have, I did not have obligations. I like barely, i did, you know, swim team like one summer and like I went to girls camp, church girls camp, like a few summers.
00:25:22
Speaker
But that was only ever literally five days out of the whole summer. And it was just, it was, i mean, we did occasionally, we did vacations, but we didn't do them like in a big way,
00:25:36
Speaker
really and so a lot of my summers were spent going to the pool, the local like community pool, or like running around in the backyard.
00:25:49
Speaker
Woo woo! Yeah. And just like literally, i used to, i was remembering this recently, I used to very literally see how long i could go, um'm talking days, without putting shoes on.
00:26:05
Speaker
ah oh What do you mean? You're not speaking my language right now. I couldn't do it anymore. i very much gotten sensitive little feet.
00:26:17
Speaker
yeah But that was one of the things. I was like i had to like desensitize my feet at the beginning of the summer. and I ran around without shoes. All the time.
00:26:29
Speaker
Crazy. I was running up and down the road without shoes. Ouch. I didn't want to. I didn't care. And also like, you know, we played in the backyard. Like my, in my house that I grew up in was this giant hill in the backyard.
00:26:46
Speaker
and at the very bottom of the hill was this big old Creek. and it was like the kind of Creek that's like perfect. It has like this, the but like shallower sections that were like a little faster current and like sometimes big rocks that you could like go stand on.
00:27:02
Speaker
And then there were like the, bigger, deeper sections, sometimes like three, four feet deep, which when you're, you know, a little kid is like chest height. Yeah. um And we would go get in and swim around in the creek and like play in the mud and like dig and like just the like I said earlier, i played hella imagination games when I was a kid and that was the perfect setting.
00:27:34
Speaker
to pretend that I was like on an adventure. So like summertime was just like the endless free time be able to do that.
00:27:50
Speaker
Oh my God. Didn't it always seem like summer was so long? It did. Cause all the time was so long all time. Yeah.
00:28:00
Speaker
True. Yeah. but what a fucking phrase I just said all the time was so long all the time
00:28:11
Speaker
oh my god so funny but for real though it always felt so long yeah and it was always i don't know there was just something really special for me about summertime because like my birthday was at the end of the summer and so it always felt like I was just like you know building up to a birthday party that I got to plan and have and was always fun and was like, you know, 50% of the time it was a pool party.
00:28:41
Speaker
you know, and then a week after my birthday would be the beginning of the school year.
00:28:51
Speaker
yeah. And so don't know, there was just like, in the,
00:28:59
Speaker
in the the word that just came to mind was like the word like license you know which is sort of a similar phrase to freedom but like as a kid like it's a different kind of license than the way that like adulthood insinuates license but it's like it's the license to like go outside, bring my little like clock radio with me and like put on the country station on blast while I randomly wash the car because I want to, you know, do something with the hose, you know, like never had to do that because it was a chore. It was like the fun thing to do. was like, are we going to wash the car today?
00:29:47
Speaker
You know, or just go out and like, you know, have it playing as I like, fucked around fun in the backyard um and i think i also mentioned because of the hill that was in the backyard there was on some very special occasions we it was not only like an amazing sledding hill in the winter time but we did occasionally my dad would get like those big blue and green tarps and like lay them down the hill like from from the top
00:30:20
Speaker
and get the hose and like dawn dish soap and just spray down the tarps with the soap and the hose. but We'd all put our bathing suits on and we would belly slide down the hill on the tarps, screaming at the top of our lungs and then slide like 20 feet further into the grass and get all muddy and grassy.
00:30:49
Speaker
Oh my god. And it was so fucking fun. Jesus, this is what everybody did before they had cell phones. This is why the 90s is so nostalgic and superior to now.
00:31:03
Speaker
You mean any decade? Any decade? and woman any decade From the ninety s and back. True, true. Because, like, we did all that crazy shit.
00:31:15
Speaker
And if in my childhood, like, it carried into the early aughts because, like, we did not have, I didn't get a cell phone until I 14. Yeah. we no Wi-Fi until I was in college.
00:31:29
Speaker
um And so, like, we had, like, the one computer that had internet, like, the whole time I was growing up.
00:31:40
Speaker
yeah i didn't have a computer at all right yeah and so it was just very much like there was no motivation to like sit inside on the computer because it was like unless you were like sharing computer time with your siblings you know yeah um and it was just very much like go outside and play and that was honestly what i preferred to do i didn't even really like watch tv i watched like my brothers would watch tv and sometimes i would like sit down and like watch whatever they were watching but I didn't have any shows that were like mine specifically that I wanted to watch ever um because I always if I wasn't outside playing I was inside reading or writing or drawing so you know but like in the summertime outside every day every single day awesome i am fan um
00:32:30
Speaker
yeah um I did not have a cell phone until I was in my early twenty s Right. um Because cell phones weren't really a thing until then anyway. Yeah.
00:32:43
Speaker
So like approximately 1999-ish. Yeah. um Which is even, I feel, early for a cell phone, like to have a cell phone. Yeah. And not be like a big corporate financial consultant. Those big giant ones with the big long antenna you had to pull out.
00:33:01
Speaker
Yeah. Oh my gosh. yeah No, I don't remember what the hell mine for what any of my first ones looked like I still have one old one that was probably from around 2010, maybe 2008 or set I don't know 678 I don't know.
00:33:19
Speaker
And it looks like a toy. It's hilarious. It's so little. It's so little. And it has like one teeny little screen and all the rest of it's all like a keypad of buttons. Remember when that was the screen that you got your text messages on? Yeah.
00:33:34
Speaker
Fucking wild. Remember when text messages were limited to 140 characters? Yes. Yes, I do. i god Yeah. Oh God.
00:33:45
Speaker
And I didn't have a computer growing up. i had a I got a computer when I first moved into this house In 99. So actually, I probably had my cell phone in like 97 or 98. Yeah.
00:33:57
Speaker
um yeah And then um blame moved into this house in 99, bought my first computer probably within that first year.
00:34:09
Speaker
Definitely before 2000. and yeah so when i was growing up and i also did not have a video game console or anything like that at all i had an etch-a-sketch
00:34:23
Speaker
i had speaking spell you know what a speaking spell is i don't know if i do okay you know what an etch-a-sketch is i do know i love the etch-a-sketch that was it was infuriating and i sucked at it i did too i hardly played with it because i he was not good at it um yeah and i had like okay so let's go back um i i can remember years let's see when when we first moved to michigan um and lived with my grandmother for a little while about how old
00:35:03
Speaker
At that time? Four and a half. Okay. Right after my brother was born. Right. So it was the summer of 1980. um and my grandma would put the sprinkler out on the front lawn. Yes! The sprinkler! And I would basically just wear like, I don't remember, i think, I don't even think I had a bathing suit. I just wore like my underpants and a t-shirt.
00:35:27
Speaker
he Yeah. may Just run through. um And there was a little pool in the back. I don't remember being in it all that much, but and at your grandma's. Yeah.
00:35:42
Speaker
And then there was, was there ever a community pool that you guys went to? No. Okay. Well, there was, there was one in Frazier, which is like the next town over from her, but we really didn't go there much.
00:35:54
Speaker
Yeah. Cause that's the thing. Like there was, there was like two different, three different pools specifically that I remember going to frequently when I was growing up. um Like an outdoor pool for the summertime, which is where I did the community swim team.
00:36:13
Speaker
um And then there was an indoor pool that was like further away and it was like a huge indoor pool. And then we had like our like health club that we were like the whole family was like a member of.
00:36:25
Speaker
And there was an indoor pool the health club. um you're you're showing your privilege a little bit shut the fuck up shut the fuck up you might have to cut that out I'm just saying I'm just saying I don't think so okay I'm talking about a kiddie pool in my grandma's backyard right yeah well that's all I had that's ah that's how I mean like we didn't even have a kiddie pool like to have at the house you know but it was like like it was the thing to do in the summertime and it was also it was Virginia
00:36:58
Speaker
it's fucking hot it's fucking hot true so yeah like very much so like it was a staple growing up it was one of my favorite things to do was go swimming and there's nothing wrong with that thank you but when you're talking about your whole family has a membership at some whatever club i'm just like okay grew in northern virginia dude Everyone did. Okay. I don't know anyone who had anything like that when I was a kid. So I just grew up in a rich area there. It was, it was just how it was.
00:37:33
Speaker
Right. Yeah. So anyhow, I did not have anything like that. I hardly ever went to a pool anywhere. i didn't know people who had pools.
00:37:43
Speaker
always wished that I had a pool. um Yeah. We had one neighbor that had a pool and we would sometimes depending on, you know, timing or whatever like we would sometimes get to play and in their pool but they didn't have any kids so it was more of like a you know go bother the adults if you feel brave enough interesting but uh but yeah So I just remember having my bike and, you know, riding my bike around in like this is and yeah like after not living with my grandmother anymore.
00:38:18
Speaker
We moved into these low income townhomes with all the low income kids. And I had a really cool Schwinn bicycle that was like a banana seat.
00:38:32
Speaker
like everybody must Yeah, like, you know, kid sized bicycle with a banana seat and like it had training wheels on it for the longest time. And then nobody really taught me how to ride. They just ah they somehow my training wheels came off at some point and the kids were telling me to just go in a tight circle.
00:38:54
Speaker
like interesting i want a tight circle and you know you can get you can get your balance or learn how to balance easy that way or whatever so i did that and it worked and then um i kept riding in a circle and i never stopped riding in a circle and then it would come by and be like you know you should probably try to straighten out the wheel now trying to go straight now and so i did and they worked oh my god they probably spent a good week going in a circle i don't know was a long time that was that and that's classic gen x right there like no one ah you they took the training wheels disappeared and nobody taught you how to ride the neighborhood kids like to keep balance
00:39:39
Speaker
yeah yeah the neighborhood kids were like try to go ah circle it would you know you should be able to your bell yeah i Yeah, I, this is millennials did not get that treatment so much.
00:39:54
Speaker
My dad, he I mean, my dad was like a super outdoorsy sports dude anyway. So he was very involved in like teaching us how to ride bikes and especially teaching us how to ride without training wheels.
00:40:08
Speaker
And it was no circles were done. It was, it was, you go in a straight line or you fall the fuck over. um but he would, you know, we had like a big, la our road was this long, straight road.
00:40:25
Speaker
There was no curves and there was no like, i mean, it was not safe by any means because it was like a single lane road and everything. But like, it was straightaway.
00:40:37
Speaker
where you know he could take us to the top of the hill above our driveway where the straightaway started and you know just sort of hold on like he put one hand on the handlebars one hand but on the back of the bike seat and you know have us pedal and push and pedal and like ride would he run along he would run alongside and then let go and it was it was crash or cruise yeah amazing similar to sink or swim crash or cruise that's funny i like that i like that yeah it was fun yeah and like bikes are definitely a thing that we did in the summertime as lot a lot as well if i wasn't running around barefoot on the asphalt i was riding my bike around without shoes on so again i desensitized my feet so hard
00:41:31
Speaker
Yeah, bet. Oh my God. had all sorts of stubbed toes all the time. How? Fucked my toes up because I had the big feet. o Pain. But it was childhood.
00:41:44
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. It was just how we were. yeah um So there were like two different summers where I spent...
00:41:55
Speaker
couple weeks in California visiting my dad o and it was the summer when I was seven in the summer when I was nine and I have very distinct memories of those visits California visits there were a lot of fun um but things that stick out to me are things that are really different I don't know if this is normal for other people or whatever but I remember I may or may not be able to confirm ah certain outfits that i had that i just used to love like oh my god i remember this like one cute one piece was kind of it was like a loose cotton knit but it had it was like white with like polka dot different color polka dots all over it or something i don't remember for sure it was something like that and it had like
00:42:44
Speaker
little ruffles around the bottom of the short part the shorts part you know and it was like little like ruffles here because it was like a you know like not tank top but like the the muscle yeah like the wide just the sleeveless wide strap yeah we had little ruffles over the shoulders there and like you could just like pull it all the way down to go to the bathroom and then the sandals that i had and then i remember when jelly sandals were the thing i had jelly sandals yeah they were i didn't wear them obviously they came out in in the mid 80s when i was a kid
00:43:19
Speaker
yeah I remember that the jelly samples. Or the early 80s. 82, 3, 4, don't remember. But that was a big thing when I was a kid. and Mine purple glitter jellies.
00:43:33
Speaker
Sorry, yawn break. um
00:43:37
Speaker
I think I had clear glitter. Clear or whitish. Not totally clear, but like sort of opaque-ish. Y'all. Yeah.
00:43:48
Speaker
with glitter. Um, I think
00:43:55
Speaker
I only remember the purple glitter because they i know there's photos. I've like, we've got like family photos. oh yeah where i'm wearing them so cool and then i remember stuff like taking a bath at night and getting into clean little night gowns that were like so loose and comfortable even though it was hot outside and feeling all cooled off and clean and in your fresh little night gown oh my god it was the best yes and then i remember going out
00:44:26
Speaker
i after getting cleaned and put in my nightgown i think this is a memory i haven't had in forever but i'm pretty sure i did this uh it was thunderstorming and then we wide yeah and i went outside in my nightgown and was stomping around in the in the yeah yes oh my god oh Oh my god we were just talking about Last night when we were recording Our Patreon bonus episode um Talking about thunderstorms Because it was thunderstorming where I was Where I am And you could hear some of the thunder come through yeah So go to Patreon if you want thunder
00:45:11
Speaker
um was just Raving about How much I love thunderstorms And so I love that you said that because yes, thunderstorms were quintessential summertime experiences.
00:45:30
Speaker
um Oh my God. Especially, i mean, like obviously just to run around in the rain, but I do remember at one point, I can't remember if i was in high school or if I was like a little older, maybe like in my first two years of college, um but I was home over the summer and A friend of mine who was still in high school, ah she like she lived in the neighborhood. She came over one day and it was thunderstorming.
00:45:56
Speaker
And we had on just like the like running shorts and like a t-shirt, both of us. And we went out and jumped on that trampoline.
00:46:10
Speaker
In the thunderstorm. That's awesome. With the pouring rain. my God. And we got soaked. And it was so fun because like the the trampoline surface was like just covered with water. And so anytime we'd jump, the water would like stay in place.
00:46:29
Speaker
um my gosh. And the the, you know, bouncy part would go down. Yeah. yeah Yeah. And then it would come back up. It would snap back up, hit the water and the water would splash up. wow that's fun and it was really slippery and we like fell over a lot and that was honestly just how trampolines are in general yeah um it's funny to think about how like that was such a huge thing in the 80s 90s early aughts um and then insurance stopped covering property insurance oh no if you owned if if you owned a trampoline really yeah we had to get rid of ours because of the insurance
00:47:10
Speaker
um this And it's like amazing that it took that long for insurance to, you know, put the kibosh on the fun of the trampoline.
00:47:22
Speaker
Honestly. um But it makes sense, honestly, because it was really not a safe thing at all. Crazy. But, you know, amazing, especially during a thunderstorm.
00:47:34
Speaker
oh Yeah. And also just to like sit outside, like on the porch and Or even inside, like, I remember i would love to sit in my room on my bed with the window open and the screen obviously in so that, like, no bugs could get in or anything.
00:47:55
Speaker
But to, like, leave the window open and just listen to the thunder and the rain pouring down. Yeah. Yeah. You know what? That actually kind of reminds me of um there were there was at least one summer that we went to Tennessee for like a visit, probably just a week, you know?
00:48:12
Speaker
Yeah. And I remember running around with my cousins in in their yard and like catching fireflies and jars and that kind of stuff. Fireflies.
00:48:25
Speaker
We had so many fireflies. I got stung by a wasp on my hand. Oh, no. Yeah, it was painful. It totally ruins the vibe. That's Gen X for you.
00:48:37
Speaker
Let me ruin it. I got stung in hand. Here's all this magic and then harsh reality. was like on the side of my... pinky finger i don't remember which hand but it hurt really fucking bad oh yeah and i think that was about the only time i ever ran around outside barefoot because they all did you know but yeah yeah crazy tennessee cousins yeah
00:49:09
Speaker
I am, I, we're not going to play any music because obviously copyright, but i do have a, I was telling Christina um that I have a childhood playlist for like music that I listened to to you in my childhood, but I have a separate childhood summertime playlist.
00:49:29
Speaker
And I pulled it up because I wanted to like, you know, remind myself what's on this, playlist i haven't actually played it in a while i should probably have played it today in preparation but honestly so like i mentioned earlier i listened to a lot of country when i was a kid and i just particularly you hear that okay
00:49:55
Speaker
next time just mute yourself it was one of those weird hiccupy things that made a sound and i was like oh maybe i heard a little bit it looks like barely audible oh my god i'm sorry i couldn't it came out of nowhere also i just said moot yourself
00:50:14
Speaker
I'm a moot point.
00:50:18
Speaker
Fuck. Okay. And you... Oh my god. ah Molly. What? Moot yourself.
00:50:30
Speaker
I'm sorry. Oh, no. oh Oh, Lord. Okay. Wow. Oh, I'm all stuffy. Hang on. I got snoof.
00:50:42
Speaker
Oh, no. I mooted myself.
00:50:48
Speaker
So I could snoof. um But I got to get my get my mind right. Hang on. Okay. Childhood Summertime.
00:51:01
Speaker
Music. Country music. I used to listen to country music. And so this, k Christina, is not going to really, like, some of these songs you're going to just sort of be like, don't know.
00:51:12
Speaker
um And that's okay. But to all those listening, if you've liked country music, let me just say Kenny Chesney, When the Sun Goes Down.
00:51:22
Speaker
Very raunchy song for an 11-year-old to be listening But also, like, Kenny Chesney, I Go Back, which is all, it's like a very nostalgic song. It's like, it's the equivalent of like Nickelback's photograph trying to be nostalgic, but like better.
00:51:39
Speaker
um
00:51:42
Speaker
But like that song, let's see. ah Jack Johnson, Bubble Toes. what what what i can't play the songs because obviously that the weirdest name for a song i've ever heard bubbly toes why oh my god um yeah
00:52:07
Speaker
i've already talked about deanna carter strawberry wine yeah which was another risque subject matter for a song for ah child to love.
00:52:21
Speaker
um But that was like my first ever favorite song. And it absolutely reminds me of summertime, not only because it's about summertime. And then to like veer into like non-country, what are you doing?
00:52:36
Speaker
Looking up an old song that I just remembered that was a summer song for me and I'm adding it to my childhood nostalgia playlist. Oh, good. Good. Maybe some of these will also, I mean, like some of them will probably be more like teenage or young adult nostalgia for you, but Every Morning by Sugar Ray.
00:52:55
Speaker
Yeah. Every morning. um Angel by Shaggy. oh wait wait wait okay not the one where uh not about cheating it wasn't me it wasn't no that's that's called it wasn't me when i hear shaggy all i can think about or remember is it wasn't me right yeah you and everyone else but angel was my introduction and my personal favorite okay song by shaggy so
00:53:31
Speaker
Shout out to my cousin who introduced me to it one summer while he came out and built our back deck with his dad. and also one of the biggest ones that I always feel summertimey when I hear is Never Let You Go by Third Eye Blind.
00:53:53
Speaker
How does that go? Yes, I like that song. bottle What's it called again? Never Let You Go. okay Yes, by Third Eyed Blind.
00:54:04
Speaker
the So, yeah that's a big one that I'm just like, summer. my God. Oh, my God. But also, like, popsicles.
00:54:16
Speaker
Oh, yeah, dude. Oh, oh, oh, I have a funny story. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. What's your funny? Oh, my God. I have a funny No, not a popsicle story. Okay. Not a popsicle story. Okay. but Okay.
00:54:31
Speaker
So in the early 80s, there was a Pepsi commercial that Michael Jackson filmed. I am. um um Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was Pepsi, not Coke, but whatever.
00:54:43
Speaker
Okay. ah There was a story that because there was like, like light bulbs exploding in this commercial that and it was on, you know, on purpose that like sparks flew and caught him on fire on his head.
00:54:59
Speaker
Yes. And um then this, the summer after that happened, that story was huge. Right. ah We're all running around with sparklers.
00:55:10
Speaker
Shh. a and i had one to know and above my head and sparks flew it hit me on the top of my head and burned my hair i'm pretty sure i have little scars up there too but i don't know it hurts because that shit's hot i don't know if you know about sparklers oh i we they're hot did all the illegal fireworks On the 4th of July.
00:55:32
Speaker
Little sparklers that you just hold and go like that. Yes, they came in the giant packs of illegal fireworks. I don't know if they were illegal, but you're not supposed to be waving them above your head. Sparklers are not illegal.
00:55:44
Speaker
Fireworks are illegal in most states. But so like I mentioned earlier, sorry, go ahead. Sorry. I burned the top of my head. ah had our hairs sticking up on the top and everyone started calling me Michael Jackson.
00:56:01
Speaker
So, my God. That was fun. Oh no. Oh, oh no oh so gotta say a song really quick yes a song that was really popular when i was learning to ride my bicycle ah around the little townhouses was eddie grant we gonna rock down to electric avenue oh i'm totally gonna take it higher
00:56:33
Speaker
Yeah, it's so fucking cool. We gotta rock down to Electric Avenue and then we'll take it higher. So that was the one I just looked up and added it to my childhood nostalgia.
00:56:45
Speaker
Yeah. I don't I never i I mean, when I think of songs, I just try to go and add them as soon as I think of them. but yeah Otherwise, I'll forget. Same. But yeah, that one popped in and I was like, yeah, I've known that song for a long, long time. It's not some not something I've forgotten about and just remembered tonight.
00:57:01
Speaker
But yeah, I haven't thought to add it to my playlist yet. So yeah, I just did. 100%. Yeah. Yeah. I was go to say, because I mentioned earlier about having, you know, um family that is from Mississippi and also still lives in Mississippi.
00:57:23
Speaker
And so that was like one of the, if we did ah summer vacation, it was usually like driving down Mississippi and back. um And, you know, hanging out there for like a week or so.
00:57:36
Speaker
um And it is not illegal to sell or purchase fireworks in Mississippi. So we would go down, we would hang out with our fam.
00:57:48
Speaker
And we would, well, it it would also be, it would either be in Mississippi or sometimes as we like drove through Alabama because, you know, Alabama, we would stop by those roadside firework stands and get the big old packs of fireworks. And we would, cause we would always go down for Father's Day and then come back and it would be the 4th of July.
00:58:13
Speaker
And so we would get the illegal fireworks. Yeah. And we were not in a safe place to set them off so because we lived in a heavily forested area. But we never started forest fires, I will say.
00:58:28
Speaker
Oh my God. Like, that never happened. But holy shit, was it a risk? Yeah. So I don't know if the listener has heard all the multiple pops and moms going on outside my house, but they've been doing fireworks for at least three weeks.
00:58:44
Speaker
But tonight is definitely ramped up more than it has far. Right, because it is the weekend. it's getting there. And just up the street from me at the local grocery store, they have set up a giant tent with fireworks for sale. So it's not illegal to sell them in Michigan. Apparently not.
00:59:10
Speaker
Sell them, set them off, whatever. My poor dog. poor, poor dog. Poor Bippy. She probably won't come out from under the bed now until midnight.
00:59:26
Speaker
We'll be in the bed cuddled up and going to sleep and she'll I'll feel her jump up on the bed.
00:59:33
Speaker
Anyway. yeah They are fun, but they're dangerous. Mm-hmm. So it's very much just like a God, I will never I'll never do it when I'm an adult unless I have like the kind of property that has like a whole open field, you know?
00:59:53
Speaker
Yeah. um And like then I'll be like, sure, someone else can do it in the field. Yeah. Yeah.
01:00:04
Speaker
But I really, I'm just, because I also wouldn't want to do that with neighbors around. And it would just have to be very specifically under those circumstances. But, okay yeah.
01:00:18
Speaker
I need you to take a note. Take a note.
01:00:22
Speaker
I want you to look this up. And listener can look this up as well later on. But Molly, i don't want you to forget. Okay. Look up the video, the music video.
01:00:33
Speaker
Okay. For ZZ Top. Okay. Legs. L-E-G-S. And watch that. L-E-G-S. As far as I know, that's what it's called. The song is called Legs.
01:00:45
Speaker
Video. Like YouTube or whatever. is it ZZ Top that does the Sharp Dressed Man? Yes. Yeah. I love that song. Yeah.
01:00:55
Speaker
That's a good song. So legs was a thing when I was like seven. And if you watch the video, you will see the lady with the pretty legs wearing the cute little white ruffly socks like a little girl.
01:01:10
Speaker
oh wait. Oh, no. With pumps. What we would call pumps back in the day. Like a two inch. Two inch heel or something. It wasn't like a super high heel. right I don't think it was for her anyway.
01:01:23
Speaker
But anyway. yeah I used to just glo That song, that video, and whatever. And I had, like, those little white cotton socks with the ruffle.
01:01:34
Speaker
oh boy. And I used to walk around, like, and sing that song. Oh, Like, I was a sexy lady with white ruffly sock. Oh, my God. And I was, like, seven.
01:01:45
Speaker
Be so for real. Is it pedophilic? I don't know because in the 80s styles were like that. That's true.
01:01:56
Speaker
Yeah. Look at Madonna. I know. Rolling around on the stage in a lace teddy saying like a virgin.
01:02:08
Speaker
Touch for the very first time. Okay. So yeah. Anyhow, lord moving on. You

First Concert Experiences

01:02:17
Speaker
were talking about Eleven listening to these very risque songs. Yeah, well, I guess the one song that referenced may not be that risque.
01:02:27
Speaker
You know what I was listening to when I was 11? What were you listening to? George Michael, I Want Your Sex. Oh yeah.
01:02:37
Speaker
I do remember talking about that. 1987 and my very first concert ever was the Michael Jackson or Michael, I'm sorry, George Michael, the faith tour. And I want your sex was the biggest hit right ever.
01:02:53
Speaker
yeah And I was 11. Have I told you what my first concert was? You probably have, I don't remember. was the Backstreet Boys. Oh, when was that? in 2000 for their millennium tour so you were like eight i was eight yeah wow nice that was the tour where i distinct i don't remember anything about the concert except for distinctly that they entered it was like in an arena and the stage was in the middle and they entered coming down from the rafters of this arena uh surfboards flying surfboards
01:03:34
Speaker
aha That sounds cool. It was fucking dope. And I loved the Basher Boys when I was 7, 8, 9.
01:03:45
Speaker
Even earlier. i was probably younger than that when I got into them for the first time. But like, loved them. I also loved NSYNC. It was never one or the other for me. Cool.
01:03:57
Speaker
um My friend had... My friend's dad had gotten the tickets through his work and she met, like called me up and she was like, you want to go to this concert? And I was like, hell yeah.
01:04:08
Speaker
Of course not when I was 11, but you know what I mean? yeah yeah We both had those like weird cameras that nobody has anymore. They're like a little brick.
01:04:19
Speaker
They're like a little rectangular flat brick. And yeah, You took a picture, like there was a little hole and you just like click the button down and then you had to push the thing like this to advance the film. Okay. yeah So we both had one of those and we both took them to this concert and we were taking pictures at the George Michael concert.
01:04:38
Speaker
Was it the disposable cameras or was it a like a legit camera? Okay. Yeah. It yeah had the, but but I do remember those. I just remember that we had disposable Yeah. they these were reusable but the film was like that weird reel-to-reel looking it was like yeah if you look at it from the side it looked like a pair of binoculars like the the the film the little yeah any film thing so those yeah you pop those in there and you were like anyway yeah um so then some security dude at the concert like saw our flashes going off and came over and like made like i saw him coming and my friend didn't and i put my camera down really fast next to me um my god and she was still snapping pictures and the guy is tapping her on the shoulder and he's like give me your film and she had to open up her camera and give him her my my god and i was like
01:05:34
Speaker
He didn't notice that I had like, ah you know, a camera as well. So I have, I have pictures from the George Michael concert that are really, really grainy and horrible and hard to see.
01:05:44
Speaker
but like, I was so relieved. Yeah. That he didn't take mine. Oh man. Oh yeah. Yeah. oh yeah Yeah.
01:05:57
Speaker
I remember. Nowadays, yeah we've all got our phones. So we're all true pictures and taking videos. concerts Yeah. You couldn't do it. Yeah. Like I remember I was like maybe 13 or 14 around the same time I got my first cell phone is when I also was allowed to have a digital camera. And actually, i don't think it was really that I had my own, but more more so that I got to use the like my my parents digital camera.
01:06:24
Speaker
um I did eventually get my own but like, I remember before that, it was always like if I was going to go to like girls camp or whatever. um i would have to like, well, wouldn't have to ask for it was like usually ah part of the like, you know, in preparation to go it like, here's your disposable camera for the whole week.
01:06:48
Speaker
And I can't remember how many photos you would be able to take on those it was like not a ton. what, like usually 20 30 tops? I don't remember. Yeah.
01:06:59
Speaker
i think a regular camera rolls, you could get 24 or 36. I think most of the time you can choose, you know, obviously the more pictures, the more expensive. Yeah.
01:07:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I don't remember which one I would usually get, but it was like, you know, that was, I would only get like the one disposable camera for the week. Okay. So I have another memory. Y'all.
01:07:21
Speaker
The thing that's like that I'm realizing that's so different between like your summers and mine was like you have things that you did all the time every summer and I just have certain memories of certain things. um I did go to girls camp one time.
01:07:40
Speaker
Church girls camp? Yes. And it was fun. It was fine. i enjoyed it I yeah I learned some stuff. and of the things I liked that I learned was ah putting together some food in some tinfoil and like cooking it out on the campfire.
01:07:59
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Like hamburger, meat, and like some veggies or whatever. And you just season it up with salt and pepper or whatever and go cook it. Or s'mores. I never did that. You never did s'mores?
01:08:13
Speaker
No. And you brought the s'more stuff for us to do over the solstice weekend and we didn't do that. I know. Yeah. Oh. It's all good. But anyway, the girls camp thing there, I have the funniest memory from girls camp.
01:08:29
Speaker
so There was this girl that I was like friends with there. I think I might've met her like once before that. I don't remember for sure, but like we became buds during girls camp and like, I, uh, I had my camera with me.
01:08:49
Speaker
oh my God. And she was going to the bathroom. Oh, no. Christina, does this veer into illegal territory? might. Oh, no. I'm going to to cut this out. I already know. No, no.
01:09:03
Speaker
It's not that bad. I stuck my camera underneath the bathroom. That's illegal! I took a picture and when it got the film developed it was so goddamn funny because all you could see were her knees with her underpants going across and her face sticking out over them going through the
01:09:28
Speaker
She had those faces like, ah! You can see where her knees and her underpants and her face sticking out over her.
01:09:41
Speaker
It's the funniest thing ever. Oh my god. I still have it. Oh my god, yes.
01:09:51
Speaker
I'll find it and I'll show you, but like we can't put it on the socials. No. but It is so funny. my god. Oh fuck.
01:10:06
Speaker
Listen, y'all. The 80s. The 80s was the Wild West. What a time to unmute yourself, by the way.
01:10:23
Speaker
ah unmute yourself but
01:10:29
Speaker
Ow!
01:10:31
Speaker
Ow! Oh no!
01:10:36
Speaker
My face hurts so bad. yeah
01:10:43
Speaker
Oh lord.
01:10:47
Speaker
Fuck. I'm telling you dude, I have seen and done some of the funniest shit ever. I believe you. i have also. Oh, I love it.
01:11:01
Speaker
I remember one time I got this. This is gonna go. I don't know if I'm gonna edit this out one time at Girls' This one time girls camp.
01:11:12
Speaker
This one time at girls camp. Should that be the name of the episode? That should be the name of the episode. This one time at girls camp.
01:11:27
Speaker
Yeah, Oh my god. But like, for real. Okay, so like...
01:11:32
Speaker
and
01:11:35
Speaker
The showers at girls camp for some reason... We're all only separated by curtains on all um three sides. And the wall is the fourth side.
01:11:47
Speaker
remember my bestie was in the stall next me. And shaving, I think. Yeah. i remember my besty was in the stall next to me um and she was sheaving i think yeah and I was like, I think I was going to like lend her, ah like give her one of my like, like bottles of soap. and for some reason, rather than just like sticking my hand through the curtain.
01:12:19
Speaker
to hand it over stuck my head around the curtain while she was like fully bent over I didn't see her asshole or anything but like she was like in like full gremlin like curled over mode like shaving it all over and I was like I'm sorry I'm sorry Did she even know that you did it until you said something?
01:12:50
Speaker
She looked right up.
01:13:02
Speaker
God. Oh, my God. That is so funny.
01:13:09
Speaker
But like, let's be real, though. Are you it like if you've not seen each other accidentally naked, are you even besties? Yeah. You know, earlier I looked up the ah apartment or the, I looked up the townhouse complex that I lived in um and I was looking around from an aerial view, satellite view, and it's still like very similar, but like the two playscapes that were there,
01:13:39
Speaker
um on the property are like not in these pictures and it makes me sad because it makes me think like did they tear these down and like now the kids kids that live there don't have anything to play on that makes me one of them had a big so it was like built in a big sandbox essentially oh and we used to like make you know mud pies out of the sand or whatever yeah but yeah there was a the one that was on the other side Me and my friend that I just was talking about, we used to sit at the top and listen to music and like sit up there and sing together, our feet and stuff.

Disappearance of Playgrounds and Nostalgia

01:14:19
Speaker
Yeah, like it looks like they're both gone. Like both of those little play area things are gone. That's a bummer. Yeah. Yeah, it is a bummer. Well, to wrap this all up in a nice little bow, I want to ask you, what was your favorite like summertime snack or treat or refreshment if you can even remember um i remember this one thing it wasn't like like it you know it wasn't like a recurring thing every year but i remember it maybe one summer that i did it um a whole bunch this one summer there was like a lipton iced tea mix and
01:15:01
Speaker
that it was like a powder or something and you just put it in with ice water and mix it in like mix it up and it was like a sweet lemony flavor and it was really good and i never liked iced tea but like for whatever reason liked that when i was a kid that was fun um yeah i had a similar because i was actually thinking of this also again recently which was part of what like prompted wanting to talk about all this Was I, we used to get the like country time lemonade mix.
01:15:34
Speaker
That was a powder. Yeah. And I, we used to get the big containers of it. Exactly what I was picturing. Yeah. And i used to like, rather than make a whole picture of it, I used to just get like a glass and get like a small, like a half scoop.
01:15:57
Speaker
I used to eyeball it. kitchen witching when I was a child um like a half scoop of the powder put it the in the cup and then go over to the refrigerator that had the water dispenser and just pour the water in and do a couple of ice cubes and um just like swirl it and that was my summertime lemonade treat that was usually way too strong hu love it one glass at a time so that was like similar to mine is it's yeah they're like so similar i don't remember the packaging that the lipton iced tea stuff came in but i remember mixing up one glass of it with like a powder stuff yeah yeah but i also do remember that my mom made sun tea if you know what that is yeah you've talked about it i have maybe not on the episode on the podcast but like
01:16:54
Speaker
You've talked about it and then also the Witch Bitch Amateur hour has talked about it. Oh, okay. Particularly pertaining to the saltta solstice and making sun tea on the solstice. yeah and we talked you wouldn't When you were talking about your mead. Talking me about my what?
01:17:11
Speaker
The mead that you made. Oh, oh, oh. Yeah, yeah. And like wanting to leave it out in the sun. I think I can't remember if you mentioned Sunday or or if I just thought of it because of public talking about leaving it out in the sun.
01:17:24
Speaker
I'm guessing the sunshine. Yeah. Yeah. I talked about doing that and I didn't do it, but like, honestly don't remember talking about sun tea at that time. i don't know, but like, I know that it's been talked about and maybe it was just on which was the amateur hour, but even still.
01:17:43
Speaker
It's an interesting concept yeah even to think of right now. It's like you put your tea bags in a big glass whatever container and like sit it out in the sun and let the sun brew it. Like it's I hate tea so that sounds gross. but Yeah, I know. I still don't care for tea honestly. yeah I drink a hot tea once in a while to help with illnesses, ailments. And it really does help.
01:18:12
Speaker
Yeah, I've tried and I just cannot get past the taste. So unfortunately, I just load mine up with lemon and honey. Yeah, it doesn't help mine.
01:18:22
Speaker
Yeah. But like I was thinking about also recently how a few summers ago, maybe a little more than a few, i had some friends over for like a little bit of a Lamas gathering.

Favorite Childhood Summertime Treats

01:18:36
Speaker
And one of the things that I really felt strongly that I wanted to make it. It wasn't even something from my childhood, but like I really wanted to make it because it felt summery was like a combination of Sprite and cranberry juice.
01:18:52
Speaker
oh And I made it and I served it and everybody fucking loved it. Yeah. And so now I'm just like, man, I gotta make me some of those this summer.
01:19:05
Speaker
But also i added the country time lemonade powder to my like favorites on the Walmart app. Yeah. So that I can buy some the next time i place an order.
01:19:19
Speaker
love it. And have that be my summer treat. Yay. I love that. Yeah. Cause I have some really nice like pictures in my cupboard that I don't use.
01:19:31
Speaker
And I should, instead of just making one glass at a time, I should just make a whole picture Of Country Time Lemonade. And you have a tiny little red chalice to drink out of now.
01:19:43
Speaker
Yes! Yes! So you can go back and refill like 20 times to get your thirst quenched. you
01:19:53
Speaker
Oh, so good. So good. Yeah. All of my like summertime sweet treats were all drinks because i just don't remember snacks really in the summertime. Aside from like, you know,
01:20:08
Speaker
chips with a side of chlorinated water okay wait ew that sounds disgusting well it's like when you're like wet from the pool and then you get out of the pool and you eat your chips with your wet little kiddos gross um oh my god listen we had to like ah build up our immune system somehow right um Those popsicle things in the plastic sleeves that you had to cut the end off and push up from the bottom.
01:20:37
Speaker
Yeah. Freeze pops. Yeah. Those were a big thing. Okay, wait. eat The ice cream truck. We never had an ice cream truck in our neighborhood. Wow. Okay. so It was a private neighborhood, so yeah nobody could come through.
01:20:51
Speaker
i definitely had ice ice cream trucks come through when I was a kid. one I used to think they were a lie. shut up. Because never ever saw one. I never even heard one. oh um And now I know they're real. Now you need to come out here in the summer more often and you'll hear one going around my neighborhood because there is one that does sometimes, not every day, but okay once in a while when it's really hot. I feel like most of the time I'm out there in the summertime.
01:21:17
Speaker
yeah usually like been three times at least so far but yes so the what there was one that went by grandma's house um in like 1980 81 and it was like the i don't know if it was a good humor man or whatever but he had like the italian ice don't know you know what is i love italian ice he had that in the little plastic cups Yeah. And then like the little like there would just be like regular vanilla ice cream in them. And you use the little wooden.
01:21:48
Speaker
yeah The little wooden spoon that you can taste. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Splinters in your tongue. Yeah. We went to an Italian restaurant last weekend and they had that was all they had for kids.
01:22:00
Speaker
They had cannoli for dessert, but they had like those little ice cream cups for kids. Yeah. And she was like, it comes with the kids meal. And I was like, okay. So she brought it out and I saw it and I was like, holy nostalgia. What the fuck? I was like, oh my gosh.
01:22:17
Speaker
I was telling my kid, this is exactly what we used to get off the ice cream truck when I was your age. Oh my God. It was so crazy. So yeah, there was that. But then like later on, you know, the ice creams became more, you know, fancy and elaborate.
01:22:33
Speaker
Right, like the demented Spongebob ice creams. Those things, were yeah, thats that's a little after me, but yeah. I mean, like, I'm talking about just, like, the Nestle with the cru like the crunch, chocolatey Rice Krispie coating, you know, ice cream bars and those kind of things.
01:22:54
Speaker
yeah Different ice cream bars became more popular. yeah Ooh, did you guys ever get or hat did you ever have the um orange creamsicle bars. yeah oh Those were my favorite in the whole world. Me too. But we used to get them at the grocery store too. Not just off the ice cream truck, but because we found them. I never got them off the ice cream chop truck, but we also never got them at home because if we were an ingredient family.
01:23:20
Speaker
but We didn't have any fun sweet treats at home. So... It was only ever like at friends houses if they had orange creamsicles. They were my favorite. Yes.
01:23:32
Speaker
ah royal cream um Orange cream, orange creamsicle push pops. Yeah. They were push pops. We had like the whole popsicles like that were like popsicles, like the wide popsicle shape. Yes.
01:23:45
Speaker
yeah they were orange on the outside and white on the inside right exactly i had those too but the ones that i remember first before that were these push pops that were like in a cardboard tube that looked like a toilet paper tube i do remember those feel like the weird little white the thing off the top yeah wax paper thing off the top yeah and then you pushed it up from the bottom yeah it had the plastic circle thing and did you ever also do you remember or did you ever have those like little like sport drink that came they like look they came in like a barrel shaped little bottle i've seen them but i never had that and there's like a foil top thing yeah um um those we didn't have those super often and we sometimes had the ones that had like the twist off top
01:24:34
Speaker
And it wasn't like a like a normal bottle cap twist off. It was like you'd like twist it and it would break off. The plastic was shaped a pop bottle, but it was clear. yeah yeah or like something resembling those yeah they look a glass pop bottle but they're plastic and you had to taste off and it would be like not necessarily pop or soda or whatever no that's in there but like juice or like just water sugar water yeah effectively sugar water color colored flavored sugar water um yeah but also capri suns oh yeah and i never capri suns
01:25:12
Speaker
I didn't have those much. that that wasn't That wasn't around much when I was a kid. Yeah, that was like I guess that was more of a 90s thing. yeah The Capri Suns. And I do also remember whenever we went to Mississippi and visited my granny, um she had the garage refrigerator.
01:25:31
Speaker
ah huh And she always kept it super stocked with soda. um So that whenever the cousins and the kids, the grandkids came over, We could go and grab our soda out of the you know garage.
01:25:45
Speaker
And I wasn't allowed to have the Coke. But I got away with having the Sunkist that had caffeine in it also. son The orange Sunkist orange soda.
01:25:56
Speaker
it should have not had caffeine in it. It had caffeine in it. I checked. But I got away with it. I never would have known that. never thought. No, I don't. Yeah. Even my kid drinks.
01:26:08
Speaker
He likes orange sun kiss. Do you think it still has caffeine? No. I haven't checked because I haven't had one in a long time, but I do remember checking when I was a child and it had caffeine. Interesting. Yeah.
01:26:20
Speaker
Yeah. He loves different orange sodas of any kind, really. Yeah. I have no idea, but like there was always the, you know, there would be the Cokes and it was like the the forbidden drink.
01:26:31
Speaker
Yeah. um But all my cousins weren't Mormon. And so like they could have the Cokes. Apparently Sunkissed still has caffeine. I did not know that.
01:26:43
Speaker
and Well, congratulations. You learned something today. Yeah, but I got away with this yeah but i got but yeah because yeah my son has gotten away with it too yeah i would have never known because i like sometimes i would have one and then like it would be like with in front of my family and then my brother would like yell out he'd be like that has caffeine and then i would be like does it and i'm like don't know and then like the subject would get dropped but i knew it caffeine
01:27:20
Speaker
You little stinky. I was a fucking rebel. Little stinker. That was my Aries rising being like, give me the energy. Aries rising undiagnosed ADHD child.
01:27:33
Speaker
but I need stimulants. Yeah. Luckily we don't do sun kissed too often. a lot of times we end up with like orange Faygo or orange Fanta.
01:27:46
Speaker
Oh, I, I did also love it ah Fanta. I would do an orange Fanta or a grape Fanta. I loved a grape flavor as well. Grape soda. Grape soda is such a summertime thing.
01:27:58
Speaker
Yum. Yeah. Faygo has a flat at Costco that you can buy that has all the flavors in it. It's got the lemon lime. It's got the orange. Yeah. Yeah. Red pop.

Cranberry Juice and Nostalgic Drinks

01:28:07
Speaker
Cause like literally Faygo is the only soda company that has a pop called red pop.
01:28:13
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. right And then in case you weren't aware, yeah it's called red pop it says it on the can yeah um and then they have the grape which is purple obviously but like yeah yeah um but they also make fago makes cream soda which i love cream soda i liked it yeah i had it ah like a bit it was more of a grandma's house thing she was the milder softer of the two grandma's
01:28:44
Speaker
you know, like the granny was like the younger one and she was a little more on the crazy side because she was also not Mormon. And then like grandma had more of the like softer vibes. She was the one that would like do all the knitting and the quilting and stuff and like didn't really ever go outside.
01:29:00
Speaker
and and But she, but she had her cream sodas and club sodas um and also she had like grandmas who i associate with like the you know cranberry juice blends like the crayon razz and stuff because that was always like the the drink of choice when we visited i started drinking crayon raspberry ocean spray when i was in college and i mixed it with vodka oh Not a bad choice.
01:29:32
Speaker
I never had it before that. Oh, I loved cranberry juice. And it worked very well. cra Oh, I know. Cran raspberries, the bomb with vodka. Let tell you. Oh, yeah. Cran anything with vodka.
01:29:45
Speaker
Let's just be

Gardening with Grandma

01:29:46
Speaker
real. My go-to drink for a long time when I was a young alcoholic college student was a cranberry vodka. yeah but i don't i never cared for just straight cranberry it's just too tart for me oh i loved it more tart more tart more better i loved it oh my god nowadays i will mix some orange juice and cranberry and get a little like combo tropical sunrise looking drink right yeah yeah
01:30:18
Speaker
And it tastes yummy. um But then you, oh my gosh, something sparked a memory that I was going to bring up to now. And I'm like, oh, my grandma, the one that I was raised around.
01:30:30
Speaker
Right. Was a gardener, like an avid gardener. And that was a big time, a big summertime thing for me was to be out in the garden, helping her either planting stuff or picking stuff.
01:30:42
Speaker
and yeah my grandma did garden too but like she was also really old so like she kept a garden for a lot of her life um and she grew a lot of veggies and actually gave us a whole lot of like home canned stuff um she was homemaker central um but like by the time i was you know growing up she was getting too old to like go out and do that stuff yeah Yeah.
01:31:09
Speaker
But it was okay because she stayed in and quilted. my Well, because like when I was younger, grandma had her house in Roseville and she planted stuff right in the ground out there. But then when she moved out to her big fancier house ah on the river, oh she had like a container garden on the deck.
01:31:31
Speaker
So she had like big pots of dirt with tomato plants growing in them and various things like that. But Yeah, I miss that. I miss that shit. Yeah.
01:31:42
Speaker
Planting and growing with her picking stuff. She'd tell me to go outside and pick all the red cherry tomatoes off the plant. And yeah I knew how to spot when the radishes were ready to pick and I would go pick the ones that were ready to pick.
01:31:57
Speaker
Yeah. Stuff like that. Yeah. the The vegetable I associate that I remember her growing my grandma was English peas. Mm-hmm.
01:32:09
Speaker
um and we would just go pick them and eat them straight off the plant and uh also tomatoes but that was the one that she canned she was like she her canning her canned tomatoes were phenomenal oh my god i've talked about them before john and our kiddo went like about three weeks ago i think two three weeks ago they went and stopped and bought some plants to plant and made a little garden this year oh and there's like green onion type deal growing like those green you know like those things you cut and they're like you have to chop them up they turn into chives or whatever they're the same thing yeah yeah
01:32:53
Speaker
um And two or three kale plants because i grew kale once behind the house and that shit grew into the wintertime.
01:33:05
Speaker
you know you yeah it's ah it's a late autumn winter it was all summer and it grew I mean that winter was so mild also that we really didn't get any deep freeze that year and it kept growing through the winter it was crazy but then like so springtime came and it started turning funny it was flowering and doing all this stuff so it wasn't you couldn't pick it to eat it anymore yeah um but also my kiddo picked out three green bean plants because he knows i like green beans oh and i guess he likes them too i don't know but yeah he eats green beans at school with ranch nice he like yeah i was like okay as long as you're eating some you know yeah cool beans amazing cool ranch beans
01:33:54
Speaker
Cool ranch beans. Oh, God. So I can't wait to get some to pick. there It hasn't grown big enough yet to pick anything, but... But you will!
01:34:08
Speaker
Yay, summertime. Yay!
