In today's reading we will cover the books of Luke Chapter 1:57-80, 2:1-20, and Matthew Chapter 1:18-25. Today we will read about the both birth of John, who would prepare the the people  before Jesus came, and the birth of Jesus. On John's name giving day Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke prophecy about John, saying that John would let people know how to be saved, that it would happen when their sins were forgiven. Then Zechariah praised God. The angel, who reassured Joseph in a dream, confirmed Jesus as our savior when he told Joseph that the son Mary would bear would be God's son, who would save people from their sins and be called Immanuel, God with us. The angel heralded Jesus' birth by proclaiming that joy was coming to ALL people because the Lord Jesus had come to save us, bringing with Him Shalom, completeness and peace. Then the shepherds also praised God after hearing the amazing news. Following our regular reading we will read 2Samuel Chapter 7, where David wanted to build a house for God and God responded by telling David that HE would build a house for DAVID!

In today's discussion for daily application we will talk about Jeremiah 29:11- God knows the plans He has for us. Plans to prosper us and not hurt us. Plans to give us hope and a future. God not only fulfilled those plans by sending His son to be the savior of the world, but He fulfills those plans in US every single day by giving us good works to do. We can TRUST our loving God and know that the works He gives us to do ARE good because He doesn't change. And we cannot out give God. When David wanted to build a house for God, God responded by saying HE would build an eternal house for DAVID. God knew the plans He had, even way back then. God has always known the plans He has for us. And God will carry those plans to completion. Like Zechariah and the shepherds, let us PRAISE GOD TODAY AND EVERY DAY! For our God is soooo good, loving, and wonderful and shows us His great love every single day.

Especially you, Diamond. I'm glad that you're doing that sticker. Get that on there.
00:01:24
Speaker
Well, we are continuing in the first chapters of the New Testament. We are going to be picking up and reading the balance of Luke chapter 1.
00:01:36
Speaker
And we are also going to be reading some from Luke chapter 2, as well as Matthew chapter 1. Matthew chapter one, before it ah begins in our version here, our condensed version, it gives Jesus's genealogy, his family history.
00:01:55
Speaker
So if you are hungry for more of God's word and you are interested in Jesus's family history of how he was part of the family of ah David, then you'll want to head up Matthew chapter one.
00:02:09
Speaker
it It was great to read it. I read it. And i love knowing that when we read the book of Ruth, that she and Boaz would have a son and they had Jesse.
00:02:22
Speaker
And Jesse was the father of David. And David became our King David. whom God told us he would always have a descendant of David on the throne. And that is exactly who Jesus is.
00:02:40
Speaker
He is a descendant of David.

Reflections on God's Plans and Promises

00:02:43
Speaker
We also know from biblical prophecy that the Savior to the world is going to be born in Bethlehem.
00:02:54
Speaker
So I love reading how God works everything together. We are going to be seeing in today's reading how God knows the plans that he has for us.
00:03:06
Speaker
God has plans for us. He has had plans for us since he first created the world. And that is just so wonderful to know.
00:03:17
Speaker
Our God is it's just nothing but love. His loving kindness goes on forever. And we can trust that the plans that he has for us are good plans.
00:03:30
Speaker
He is always designing good things for us. Jeremiah 29 11 tells us, I know the plans I have for you. Plans.
00:03:42
Speaker
to prosper you and not hurt you, plans to give you hope in the future. Now, even though God was telling the people this while they were in exile, God does not change.
00:03:58
Speaker
He is still the same God. He knows the plans that he has for us. We don't have to be scared that God is planning bad things for us. We can trust in him and know that the plans that he has for us are not just good, but they are designed to prosper us.
00:04:19
Speaker
They are not designed to hurt us. They are designed to give us hope and a future.

Understanding Shalom and Jesus's Role

00:04:25
Speaker
And he sent Jesus, his son, to bring shalom into the world.
00:04:31
Speaker
Shalom, as you remember, is not ah just a simple translation of peace, but it is wholeness. God brings us wholeness with his son. And if you've been around for a little while, then you remember when we talked about that.
00:04:45
Speaker
Because Jesus became our savior. he was born to do that. And then he sent the Holy Spirit. And then when the Holy Spirit came, the Holy Spirit hears from Jesus.
00:04:59
Speaker
Jesus hears from God. And we are one with Jesus because God is with us in us. So we are all one. Jesus told us that he and the father are one.
00:05:15
Speaker
And so we too are now one with them. We are whole. We have been made complete because of this part of the story.
00:05:26
Speaker
And these plans to be whole and complete are meant to give us hope and a future. God's plans did not just stop with the receiving of the Holy Spirit.
00:05:39
Speaker
God's plans did not stop with the death and resurrection and ascension of Jesus. God is still working every day in your life and in my life.
00:05:51
Speaker
And these plans are to give us hope and a future. So let's dig into today's reading and read about all the plans that God had and how he is fulfilling those plans in today's reading.

John the Baptist's Birth and Zechariah's Prophecy

00:06:12
Speaker
Naming the Baby Now, we're also going to be, remember, reading about John. John the Baptist, we call him. And if you remember, he is Jesus's cousin. And he is coming. He came into the world to prepare the people, to prepare the way for the Lord.
00:06:32
Speaker
All of Elizabeth's friends and family were happy. They heard what God had done for her. They got together the week after the baby was born and they were going to give him his father's name, Zechariah.
00:06:47
Speaker
But Elizabeth said, no, we will call him John. John, said, none of your family has the name of John. they used sign language for Zechariah and they asked him what he wanted to name the baby.
00:07:04
Speaker
Zechariah asked for something to write on and everyone was surprised when he wrote, his name will be John. Right then, Zechariah could talk again.
00:07:17
Speaker
cheered for God. Friends and family were filled with wonder. Then Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:07:29
Speaker
Cheer for God the Lord, he said. The Lord has come to save his people. He is saving us through the family of David. It's just what he promised through the prophets long ago My child, you will be called God's prophet.
00:07:49
Speaker
You will see God's plans and tell about them, said Zechariah. You will go ahead of the Lord. You will make a way ready for him.
00:08:01
Speaker
You will make a way ready for him and let him know let his people know how to be saved. You will say this will happen when their sins are forgiven.
00:08:14
Speaker
The news went out all over the hill country. People talked about what had happened. Everybody who heard about it wondered, What will this child be?
00:08:26
Speaker
God is with him in a special way.
00:08:31
Speaker
yeah as time went on, John grew. He turned out to be strong in spirit. And after he grew up, he went to live in the desert.

The Birth of Jesus and Its Significance

00:08:44
Speaker
A trip to Bethlehem. Matthew chapter 1, verses 18 to 25. And Luke chapter 2, verses 1 through 20.
00:08:54
Speaker
Now here's what had happened when it was almost time for Jesus to be born.
00:09:01
Speaker
First of all, his mother Mary was supposed to marry Joseph, but she found out she was going to have a baby. He would be God's son. Now Joseph didn't know the baby would be God's son.
00:09:14
Speaker
He just knew that this didn't seem right. Mary shouldn't be having a baby before she got married. And so he was going to tell her that he wasn't going to marry her.
00:09:28
Speaker
Now Joseph thought about this for a while. And then God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream. The angel said to Joseph, Joseph, don't be afraid to let Mary be your wife.
00:09:44
Speaker
She will have a baby boy by the power of the Holy Spirit. You will name him Jesus, and he will save his people from sin. Everything happened just like Isaiah the prophet had said many years before.
00:10:02
Speaker
There will be a young woman, and she will never have slept with a man like a wife would. But she will have a baby, and she will call him Emmanuel, which means God with us.
00:10:16
Speaker
Then Joseph woke up from his dream. And he did just what the angel told him to do. He married Mary, but he did not sleep with her the way a husband would until after her baby boy was born.
00:10:32
Speaker
At that time, Caesar Augustus was the highest ruler, and he made a law that everyone should be counted. We call this a census. So people had to go back to their own towns to be counted.
00:10:47
Speaker
These were the towns where their families from long ago had been born. And that meant Joseph had to leave Nazareth and he had to go to Bethlehem in the hill country.
00:10:59
Speaker
That's because he was from the family of King David. So Joseph went to Bethlehem to be counted and he took Mary with him.
00:11:10
Speaker
While they were in Bethlehem, the baby was born. It was a boy! Mary wrapped him in warm claw, but she had to put him in an animal feeding box because there was no place to stay at the inn.
00:11:27
Speaker
The rooms were all full. There were some fields close to town, and that night some shepherds were out in the fields. They were taking care of their sheep.
00:11:39
Speaker
God sent an angel to the shepherds. God's greatness shone above them and all around them. They were afraid.
00:11:51
Speaker
But the angel said, Don't be afraid. I am bringing you good news. Great joy is coming for all people.
00:12:03
Speaker
Today in the town of Bethlehem, a baby was born. He is Jesus Christ, the Lord, and he has come to save you. And here's how you can know it is him.
00:12:18
Speaker
You will find him in a feed box. All of a sudden, many, many angels showed up. And they said, and they cheered for God.
00:12:29
Speaker
They said, God in highest heaven gets the praise for this. Peace is coming to those who make God happy. And then the angels went back to heaven.
00:12:43
Speaker
Something special happened in Bethlehem, said the shepherds. Let's go see. So the shepherds hurried into town where they found Mary and Joseph and the baby.
00:12:55
Speaker
The baby was in a feed box for animals. Then the shepherds left to tell everyone what the angels had said. People who heard it were surprised.
00:13:08
Speaker
Now Mary thought deeply about everything that had happened. She kept it all in her heart, like a special gift. And the shepherds went back to their fields, and they cheered for God.
00:13:25
Speaker
They thanked him for what they had heard and seen. It was just the way the angel said it would be.
00:13:36
Speaker
Praise God, our wonderful God. He welcomed Jesus' birth with but the angels.
00:13:45
Speaker
Everybody who was filled with the Holy Spirit proclaimed in today's reading that Jesus would be saving them from their sin. Jesus came into the world to save us from our sin.
00:14:02
Speaker
Whoever believes in him will not die but have eternal life with God. It is not that hard to do. we just need to believe in him. And then we are filled with the Holy Spirit.
00:14:14
Speaker
God dwelling with us.
00:14:17
Speaker
I love how everything is so consistent. Everybody was given the same message. Zechariah prophesied and gave that same message about his son and Jesus saying that the Savior would would come and forgive their sins.
00:14:34
Speaker
And God told us, in many different passages throughout the old covenant that he would send savior to save the people from their sins.
00:14:47
Speaker
So we see that God indeed had a plan and God knew that plan. And God is faithful to fulfill his word when he says he will do something.
00:14:58
Speaker
And we can trust that everything God does for us is to prosper and not hurt us. He plans us good things to give us a hope in the future.
00:15:11
Speaker
Because he loves us so, so much. If he didn't love us, he could have abandoned us forever ago. but he didn't. And God is with you today.
00:15:22
Speaker
God is with me today. We have hope and we have plans for a future. God gives us work to do good work to do every day. And he has planned us to be made capable and enabled to do that work by reading his word and to be motivated to do what he has given us.
00:15:44
Speaker
And whatever he gives us, we are meant to do with our whole heart, to seek him.
00:15:52
Speaker
Part of our reading today in the Big Bible version tells us about
00:16:00
Speaker
when when Zechariah was prophesying that he said that he would bring a a son from the family of David, just like he said.

God's Promise to David

00:16:10
Speaker
And it references in the Big Bible, in my study Bible here, 2 Samuel chapter 7.
00:16:17
Speaker
And this was the chapter that says the Lord's promise to David. i thought this was very interesting because I and don't remember if maybe we didn't read this part, but sometimes I it you know i don't don't remember absolutely everything that we read either, but I don't remember specifically reading and this particular part because this is about when David wanted to build a house for the Lord, but God said, no, he was going to build his own house.
00:16:51
Speaker
So he says, it came about when the king lived in his palace and the Lord had granted him rest from all his enemies around him, that the king being David said to the prophet Nathan, see now I am living in a house of cedar, yet the ark of God remains within curtains.
00:17:10
Speaker
I do remember that. Go do all that is in your heart, Nathan said to the king, for the Lord is with you. But it came to pass the same night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, Go, tell my servant David.
00:17:26
Speaker
Thus says the Lord, Are you to build me a house for me to dwell in? Since the day that I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt to this day, have not dwelt in a house, but have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.
00:17:45
Speaker
and in all my journeying among all the children of Israel, did I ever speak a word to any of the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar?
00:18:00
Speaker
So now, thus you shall say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord God of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep,
00:18:13
Speaker
to be ruler over my people, Israel. I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies before you, and I will make your name as great as the greatest on earth.
00:18:28
Speaker
I will also set up a place for my people, Israel, and will plant them so they may dwell in their own place and not be disturbed again. nor will the children of wickedness afflict them any more as in the past, since the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel.
00:18:47
Speaker
So I will give you rest for all from all of your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.
00:19:00
Speaker
David wanted to make a house for God, and God said, na No, no, no. It is I who will make a house for you.
00:19:12
Speaker
When your days are done and you sleep with your fathers, which means to die, I will raise up your seed who will come forth from you after you and I will establish his kingdom. he will build a house for my name and I will establish his royal throne forever.
00:19:35
Speaker
I will be a father to him and he will be a son to me.
00:19:42
Speaker
If he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and with the strokes from sons of men. Yet my loving kindness will not be withdrawn from him as I withdrew it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
00:19:57
Speaker
So your house and your kingship will be secure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.
00:20:07
Speaker
Just so, Nathan spoke all these words and all this vision to David.
00:20:18
Speaker
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, Who am I, my Lord God? And what is my family that you have brought me this far?
00:20:29
Speaker
Yet this was a small thing in your eyes, my Lord For you have spoken also of your servant's house for the distant future. This is a revelation for humanity, ah t my Lord God.
00:20:45
Speaker
What more can David add in speaking to you? For you already know your servant, my Lord God. For the sake of your word and according to your own heart, you have done everything great, revealing this to your servant.
00:21:02
Speaker
Therefore, you are great, my Lord God, for there is none like you. There is no other God besides you, as we have all heard with our ears. What one nation on earth is like your people, like Israel, whom God went to redeem for himself as a people to make for himself a name, to do for you a great thing and awesome deeds for your land, before your people whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, driving out nations and their gods.
00:21:32
Speaker
So you established for yourself, your people Israel, as your very own people forever. And you, Lord God, have become their God.
00:21:43
Speaker
So now, my Lord God, confirm the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and his house for forever and do as you promised. Let your name be magnified forever by saying, The Lord God of hosts is God over Israel.
00:21:58
Speaker
May the house of your servant David be established before you. For you, Lord God, hosts of Israel, have made a revelation to your servant saying, will build you a house.
00:22:10
Speaker
Therefore your servant has found his heart to pray this prayer to you. So now, my Lord God, you alone are God, and your words are truth, and you have promised your servant this good thing.
00:22:24
Speaker
So now let it please you to bless the house of your servant to continue forever before you. For you, my Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing, your servant's house will be blessed forever.
00:22:39
Speaker
We cannot outgive God. David had it in his heart to build a house for God. And God said, and no, no, no. It is i who will build a house for you.
00:22:51
Speaker
Our God is so great, so loving, so kind, and we cannot outgive him.

The Call to Praise and Spread God's Word

00:22:58
Speaker
So today's daily application is to praise God the way that we saw today. Everybody praising God.
00:23:06
Speaker
Everybody praised God. The angels, Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, everybody who heard and knew what was going on, praised God.
00:23:19
Speaker
So let us also praise God for how great and wonderful he is, not just today, but every day. I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and that you feel like praising our wonderful God.
00:23:36
Speaker
ah So please remember to click that light button at the end. It looks like a thumbs up or a heart, but it's our light button. God has given us the greatest pleasure to be the light in the world for him.
00:23:49
Speaker
Let us draw all people to his word, to spread the word about reading his word so that all people, as we read today, God came, Jesus came to save all people.
00:24:03
Speaker
So let us spread the word about reading God's word so that all people can know that he is our savior.

Conclusion and Farewell

00:24:11
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day wherever you are on August 11th.
00:24:16
Speaker
And that I know that I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
