Introductions and Cold Blame

00:00:10
officialgspn
Hello listeners and welcome to another edition of the Daily Palace podcast here at GSBN. My name's Finn Boden and I'm joined by Joe Lodge, aka Captain Sniffles today. like Explain this name, Joe. why Why are you Captain Sniffles today?
00:00:26
Captain Sniffles
It's not a bit under the weather, Finn. I went up to Edinburgh last week as we spoke about on Friday's podcast and I think my English constitution couldn't handle the bracing Scottish wind and now I'm i'm under the weather, but that's the least of our concerns today. But yeah, I'm a bit gravelly. I'm hyping when the post-production up to the base, up to a volume, I'll sound like Sean Dyche, but right now, the sick man of Europe.

Podcast Production with Zencastr

00:00:57
officialgspn
That's it. Shout-outs to our providers, Zencaster. Like you said, the post-production, they'll give you a little bit little bit of avavoom, a little bit of oomph. Yeah, sorry to hear that. Maybe you could have channeled some James MacArthur or some other former Scottish greats at Crystal Palace to help you ah brave the Scottish climate.
00:01:14
Captain Sniffles
Yeah.
00:01:16
officialgspn
But yeah, we're glad to have you here and join us today. And then we've also got Wale Bakari. How you doing Wale?
00:01:22
Wale Bakare
I'm all right. How are you guys doing? I've been sleeping almost all day. To be honest, I spent almost an entire week in sleeping, especially after the result on Saturday.
00:01:34
officialgspn
I mean, it felt it felt felt a bit like we all wanted to go to sleep after that. I think a few few of the players were asleep as well, judging by ah the way our defense was on on Saturday. But yeah, so Wale touched upon it today.

Crystal Palace vs. West Ham Match Analysis

00:01:48
officialgspn
We're going to be talking about, in three parts on the show, we're going to be talking about Crystal Palace's ah loss against West Ham in the second game, Game Week 2 of the 24-25 Premier League season. Then in the second part, we're going to have a a quick look at some player ratings, who did well, who was great, who was a hero, and who was a villain during this match and other goings-ons.
00:02:12
officialgspn
And then in the third and final part of today's show, we're going to have a quick look at transfer windows. We're going to look at some tactics. Is it alarm bell time yet at Solaris Park? Or do we think that maybe not all is lost and a bit too early to tell? So yeah, so guys, so Palace had their first home game of the season at Solaris Park on Saturday at West Ham. We're visiting.
00:02:39
officialgspn
and we we had some predictions let's go let's let's tap back into we had some uh match predictions on friday i seem to believe i said two ones crystal ballas oh that was that that didn't work out joe what was yours
00:02:54
Captain Sniffles
I said 2-1 also to Crystal Palace, although what I didn't have time to say in my hosting capacity last Friday, and I can pull out ah screenshots to prove it if need be, is I highlighted Sue Chek and Bowen as danger men in my nights for West Ham.
00:03:12
officialgspn
actually I actually remember that. you do you To fair play to you, you did mention both of those players.
00:03:15
Wale Bakare
ru and
00:03:19
Captain Sniffles
So, I mean, that's I'm not trying to take any pleasure in what happened there, but...
00:03:25
Wale Bakare
All the best explaining there. All the best explaining there.
00:03:26
officialgspn
Wale, what about yourself?
00:03:29
Captain Sniffles
this
00:03:30
officialgspn
Wale, what about yourself? What was your prediction? What was your prediction for the game on Saturday?
00:03:35
Wale Bakare
Well, to be honest, I think I might've, I might've thought it was going to be 2-1 to Paulus as well. Although there was a part of me thinking it might've ended in a draw, but whatever I thought was useless anyway.
00:03:50
officialgspn
So as you as you listeners can all tell, we all got our predictions massively wrong. So unfortunately, Palace conceded two goals late in the second half. um jarret Was it Thomas Zuschek with a strike from just the edge of the box after a sort of bit of frantic defending slash not defending?
00:04:13
officialgspn
And then Jared Bowen with a breakaway score in front of the West Ham fans and a poor ball boy almost got crushed. Glad to hear that he's all right. But yeah, the.
00:04:24
officialgspn
West Ham fans rushed down to greet Jared Bowen after he scored that second goal. and Luckily, Ham and Thomas Soushek had the state of mind to drag this poor young lad out from under the hoardings. but So, enough enough about West Ham's goals.
00:04:44
officialgspn
what do What do we think about Palace's performance, Joe? What was what was your takeaway? did Was this a close game or was it all West Ham? Was it all Palace and then they they were robbed? What are your thoughts, Joe?
00:04:55
Captain Sniffles
I think it was it was definitely a close game. I would say despite the scoreline probably looking worse, a 2-0 loss at home to West Ham probably seems worse than a 2-1 on the road to Brentford.
00:05:13
Captain Sniffles
It was a minor improvement for me in performance. I think last week Palace lacked intensity in both sides of the pitch, attacking in a defensive sense. This time, sharper, sharper in the attacking sense, particularly in the first half.
00:05:33
Captain Sniffles
there was a bit of a sense of a threat there. Mateta and Eze linked up quite nicely. We saw a few flashes of ah last season. The big issue was just defensive sharpness, people not stepping up when they needed to. um you know if and we'll We'll get into that more later, but it I think they're quite obvious.
00:05:59
Captain Sniffles
culprits and moments where both goals were conceded and then just clinicality on West Ham's part really taking a chance. They had better than Palace. I think it was a very similar game on XG. That said, it does create a problem. You you can't just get through with, ah you know, it was all right. um The Premier League season is not that long. You don't have that much time to adapt and Bad vibes work on compound interest.

Upcoming Challenges Against Chelsea

00:06:31
Captain Sniffles
They've got a tough game with Chelsea next weekend. Chelsea looked for the first time in three years quite decent against Wolves last weekend. And three losses in a row is more than 50% worse for the vibes than two in a row.
00:06:51
Captain Sniffles
And it also, yeah it's bad for the transfer market if I'm a fire extinguisher salesman, whether I'm a local boy done goods looking after my community's favorite fire extinguisher shop or a tyrannical regime trying to build like the best fire safety shop in Europe.
00:07:08
Captain Sniffles
I'm going to up the price if I can see your houses on fire. So I think it's it is a problem for Palace, but the performance was not horrendous for me.
00:07:23
officialgspn
Interesting thoughts there, and I agree. I think as you said, so maybe because there's been so many outgoings, big outgoings at Palace recently, and it's never a great look. Obviously, it's not the only only reason the Palace win on Saturday, but it's never a great look when you have two of your first teamers ah leave on transfers and then you lose a game straight afterwards. It's never great. And obviously, we're very sad to see Joachim Anderson go, but I mean, as you said, the play we had, we had, we had Charlie Riyadh has his has his debut came on. What are your thoughts, Wale? What are your thoughts about Charlie Riyadh in ah his debut for Chris Dallas and also the just the defense in general since because obviously it's been a lot of the talk has been around Mark Gehi this summer.
00:08:16
officialgspn
after his really good performance with England of the Euros and he's been linked with Newcastle, then sort of sort of out of nowhere really, Joachim Anderson has moved to Fulham. And now maybe it's showing you that how integral he was to that palace defence. And is it a case of, do we think the current defenders are going to be able to do the job? but and Or is it a tactical thing? what what What are your thoughts while they tell me?
00:08:44
officialgspn
You're me, Chipotle.
00:08:47
Wale Bakare
Well, ah but first of all, I have to say that the Premier League, or maybe not just the Premier League football is fine margins, really. um See, when the game was still 0-0, you would have looked at that Palace team and say, oh, well, they they're not doing too bad. You look at the defensive tree of um ah Chris Richards, Mark Gay and Riad and Yudha thought maybe they weren't doing too bad. But when you then, you know, look at the game after it ended too nil, then the questions begin to come up. ah To answer your question specifically,
00:09:20
Wale Bakare
um I think Rhea did alright for his debut you know the the result of course a kinds of um raises a lot of questions and you know gets a lot of people talking as to um how much the team would meet ah would miss Joachim Anderson Whether you know that game against Western had ended 2-0 in favor of Crystal Palace, Anderson will still ah will still have been missed you know by Palace over the course of the season. and But um I just think it's sad, yes, that um you know it's two losses in a row.
00:09:56
Wale Bakare
It's sad that, you know, the first home game of the season ended in a loss, particularly against Western who, you know, Palace have been terrific against in the last couple of games. And it was one of those games where it was quite balanced. um All of a sudden, it just kind of drifted away from, you know, Palace. And you know, all of a sudden we're talking about whether, you know, the defensive unit did well, whether the team played well, it could all have been different, you know, the the team hit the post a couple of times, ah there were a couple of chances, um there's questions as to whether
00:10:36
Wale Bakare
Uh, you know, um You know whether things could have been a bit different, you know at some point Those those are those are big questions, but well because of the result all of a sudden where we're talking about You know whether you know the team played well, but for me, I honestly think it's still very early days in the season Uh riad did all right, of course you'd expect him to improve over time I don't know when you look at the three man defense gay was the best of them riad.
00:10:54
Captain Sniffles
Thank you.
00:11:03
Wale Bakare
Maybe the better ah maybe maybe even better than reach ads. But as a unit, um it's just sad they considered those goals. But if the results are different, I'm sure we'll be saying something different.
00:11:17
officialgspn
Absolutely. As you said, like, I think people sometimes, sometimes forget the story of a match just based on the results.
00:11:22
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:11:23
officialgspn
And I think as you said, even I agree with what you're saying. Well, like even the Brentford game, it wasn't like Palace were on the ropes at all. In fact, it was at one point, it was very likely that in both matches we could win the game.
00:11:37
officialgspn
Every Chiese was really unlucky. I feel again, not to second week in a row, not to have a potential, uh,
00:11:44
Wale Bakare
Yeah.

Zencastr Features Highlight

00:11:46
officialgspn
worldy worldy hit the back of the net and as you said he hit the woodwork with quite with an almighty strike so i think he was very very unlucky so maybe it's just a case of like as you said fine margins and hopefully in the next coming weeks some of those will fall more towards palace's way so um we're going to take a short break now and when we return we're going to be talking about player ratings, the heroes and villains of Saturday's game against West Ham at Celes Park. So don't go away and join us for part two. We'll be having a quick word as well now about our sponsors Zincaster.

Player Performances and Ratings

00:13:08
officialgspn

00:13:11
officialgspn
Daily Polis, Polis there. I can assure you this is not a, a yeah, this I can assure you this is not a police-based podcast.
00:13:15

00:13:20
Wale Bakare
How's your funnest, by the way?
00:13:21
officialgspn
ah How's my Spanish?
00:13:24
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:13:25
officialgspn
Muy mal.
00:13:29
officialgspn
thus da sana aki a yo your poto ab blah onki but and No, no, it's it's okay. itll It gets by like my friends only laugh at me a lot Wonderful so part two of the daily palace podcast we're gonna be talking about player ratings from Saturday's fixture at Southwest parking into West Ham, so I have my trusty app here my trusty app and i mean obviously we're not going to just go by just what sofa score says guys we're going to have we have our own opinions we're going to say what we what we think i mean we've got some good ratings here from mark gay he adam warton tyron mitch or every gsa um some not great ones from dean henderson and chris richards uh and then obviously we have daniel muรฑoz jefferson lermer arson ed wylin jonford imitator sort of operating
00:14:22
officialgspn
in the the middle the middle ground.
00:14:23
Captain Sniffles
Thank
00:14:25
officialgspn
um First of all, who was who do you who do you feel was the most dangerous player while laying for Crystal Palace on Saturday?
00:14:27
Captain Sniffles
you.
00:14:34
Wale Bakare
Well, as expected, it was very GSA. It looked like, you know ah you know, any good thing was going to come from him. um As expected, he was ah dragging a lot of players to himself, ah opening up some spaces for the other guys in the attack too.
00:14:52
Wale Bakare
you know ah to get them into the game board as they did look like it was the one who could make the magic you know for Palace so I have to say Adam Wharton you know had a great game as well um for for some reason I look at him and I remember when Liverpool signed Jaby Alonso. I know that might be too much for him, but what Alonso used to do at the time was get the ball, get the game moving. It wasn't dwelling on the ball, it wasn't no fancy skills,
00:15:23
Wale Bakare
no is it's not trying to beat anyone it's just get the ball feed the ball to the attack and and that's exactly what Adam Wharton does gets the ball and just pushes it on and he rarely ever loses the ball he's also got a great eye you know for the battles as well so it's it's just one of those i was ah watching one of the shows on youtube ah you know by the pundits and they were, you know, talking about, you know, Crystal Palace players, we would, we would stay, you know, for a long time.
00:15:49
Captain Sniffles
yes
00:15:55
Wale Bakare
And someone was saying they don't see Washington staying longer than one more season at this rate that is playing. And it's only a matter of time, honestly, because the the boys just great. but So for me it was a ze warden maybe my gay gay and a lot of points in that game did look like he had uh michael antonio on the You know control did look like he had marmot kudus on the control Jared bowen for a large part of that game was a bit silenced um and west amount to push thomas to check, you know up, uh at some point but you know, um
00:16:15
Captain Sniffles
Heh, heh, heh, heh.
00:16:32
Wale Bakare
Eventually, things just drifted away from Palace. But overall, the the the best players for me, you know it was a very GSA. It looked like it was the only one that could make things happen in that forward line, in that game. And I really hope that that will not be the case in every game.
00:16:50
officialgspn
Yeah, as you said, I think you made a really good point about um sort of Mark Gage showing once again his qualities at the back. and Adam Wharton, I mean, we've we've all sung his praises now for the last few months.
00:17:01
officialgspn
I mean, what a fantastic acquisition in January from Blackburn Rovers. And I think it's a real shame that we didn't see him get a chance to perform for the England team at the Euros, because I think he offers something quite different to a lot of other midfielders in that position currently, which is, as you said, he gets the ball moving forward and gets the sort of like the engine of the team gets things rolling.
00:17:24
officialgspn
I mean, I love that comparison of Chavi Alonso.
00:17:27
Wale Bakare
Well, it was bold, yeah, it was bold, yeah, but yeah.
00:17:27
officialgspn
Does that mean we're going to see... You're in bold, but you're going with it. You're saying it with your chest. I love that. Does that mean we'll be seeing Adam Wharton leading a team to the Bundesliga title in 20, 30 years, do you reckon?
00:17:41
Wale Bakare
Well, it would have to go to Liverpool, then Madrid, then Bayern Munich, then, you know, buts it's a long journey before, before Liverpool.
00:17:49
officialgspn
ah you Are you trying to say, I mean, you've said he's got one year left. Are you trying to say he's not going to stay at Crystal Palace forever and run around in like fields with flowers and bunny rabbits?
00:17:55
Wale Bakare
well i said that i i said i have that
00:17:59
officialgspn
You can tell me he might go to a bigger club.
00:18:01
Wale Bakare
but
00:18:01
officialgspn
God, who would do that um apart from all of our team? um Yeah, Joe, what what were your thoughts? Who were the who were the heroes and villains of the Palace team on and Saturday for you?
00:18:13
Captain Sniffles
Yes, I pretty much echo wireless thoughts on on the heroes. I had down Warden, for exactly that reason, punching the ball through the lines.
00:18:19
Wale Bakare
Well, I said that. I said I had that.
00:18:23
Captain Sniffles
So direct, so inventive, such a smart player, really, really great there. His socks are very low, but his standards are not. um And Gaehee is her another who, it's not like he had an unusual Mark Gahey performance, but that is extraordinary given what a short summer he's had, all the speculation around him, the fact that his head may very well have actually been turned to come in, captain, play a new role in the centre, do Anderson's sort of job, fantastic. Another hero I want to highlight is the ball boy because,
00:19:02
Captain Sniffles
ah i mean basically because, Bowen said in his post-match press conference, he's got my top and he's smiling. And I thought, what an impressive young man to have the sort of kindness to pretend that receiving Bowen's top makes up for nearly being crushed to death on live TV by the last West Ham fans. So I thought, what a legend, you know, a real ambassador for the club. um Villains, it's rare that I go against sofa scores, but
00:19:36
Captain Sniffles
only appropriately since passing by new standards. Mitchell, for me, I think he actually played really well for most of the game. The reason I highlight it is for both goals,
00:19:52
Captain Sniffles
he doesn't follow Wambasaka's run into the box and it doesn't make a difference in the first goal, it's kind of irrelevant, Wambasaka's on the free of the play. In the first one, it let, the second one, sorry, it lets Bowin, it lets Bowin pin Riyadh because he's got that ball on the outside and just work an angle to whip it in and i don't blame mitchell for that i just think it highlights probably he doesn't have the lungs or the fitness right now to be bombing up and down that left hand side 90 minutes every week and it's an area palace might want to think about strengthening
00:20:28
Captain Sniffles
um

Concerns over Early Losses

00:20:29
Captain Sniffles
Other than that I don't think Edouard had a great game but I feel a bit mean dwelling on it because it it was just kind of a bit of a meh performance with one bad miss um but yeah um Mitchell but sort of through no father's own would be the the one I'd highlight there.
00:20:46
officialgspn
I think you make an ah an excellent point there about odds and Edouard. I mean, he definitely had an opportunity. a stark opportunity to get Palace back in the game. And i mean you've got to take those take those chances. You have to be clinical. so And maybe, again, this is it's like it's a confidence thing. i mean You can see with Jean-Philippe Metetta, when he has opportunities, he takes them with real sort of oomph and with real sort of authority behind the ball.
00:21:15
officialgspn
Yeah, it'd be interesting. I mean, this is breaking news today. We seem to be, Crystal Palace seems to be linked with a ah possible new acquisition. But what I'll do is I'll talk about that in part three of the show. So join us just again in a second, listeners, for part three of the Daily Palace podcast.
00:21:35

I'm joined by Joe Lodge and Wale Bakari, where we're still reeling from game two of the
00:22:12
officialgspn
of the Premier League season, Crystal Palace still without a point on the board and with some big players out of the door and sort of a summer of real transition.
00:22:23
officialgspn
Is it alarm bells yet, Wale?
00:22:24
Captain Sniffles
so
00:22:26
officialgspn
Is it a case where Palace fans should be running around going, the world is is is over, oh God? Or is it a case that we just need to give it a little bit of time? What are your thoughts, Wale?
00:22:35
Wale Bakare
Well, what has happened is life. ah Sometimes you're all feeling, you know, I, and feeling like everything is going well, especially after, you know, the way last season ended. And, you know, everyone's talking about Palace players, even when it did seem like Michael Olese and maybe a very GSA, we're going to leave. Palace fans weren't really perturbed. They felt, oh, we will be fine under this new manager. That was the sort of belief that Glasner brought, you know, with the performance of the team in the last couple of games.
00:23:05
Wale Bakare
ah You could say that, you know, um you know, maybe ah the first two games i've brought I've knocked back some senses into everyone's head and we're thinking ah maybe, but you know, there's just a a lot of work still to be done. I'm sure, um you know, Glassman and the boys would never have been, you know, feeling as, you know, the way the fans feel, you know, because Palace fans all of a sudden were beginning to sound like,
00:23:33
Wale Bakare
you know ah European places were a certainty this season and but um as I said what has happened is just like it's been it's been two games that have been lost it's not the end of the world it has the first two losing the first two games of the season you know as much as maybe doesn't help the confidence sometimes but it has never really been the end of the world um
00:23:40
officialgspn
Guilty.
00:23:57
Wale Bakare
where when When you look at, you know, I just i just wonder, you know, what will be done, ah you know, and the in the remaining days of the transfer window to, ah you know, make things better. Joe was talking about, you know, Otonedua there. ah For me, I thought,
00:24:14
Wale Bakare
I look at the front tree at front three and I wonder whether Adwa is the best person for that role on the left. Personally, I'd i'd probably have a smile as a starting in that area. But there's still a lot there's still maybe one more key piece of business you know to be done, getting someone in that forward line. ah But overall, ah it's been two games. It's two losses. That's the worst that can happen. and You can only get better from there.
00:24:42
officialgspn
I mean, as you said, Wale, also another debut for Ismaila Saar this weekend. And actually he came on an almost... almost converted, actually, it was quite unlucky not to to get it away. And he looks, and looks quite dangerous. I think he's going to be a good proposition for us, really. um As you said, maybe odds in Edouard, not really in his natural position. And I don't think he's adapted to that sort of that position as much. I think if we if we think back to last year, our front three, and obviously we should never, we should never compare, but hey, we're a football podcast. That's what we do. um
00:25:16
officialgspn
When you think about the front three of John Philip Mateta, Michael Elise, Eberichieze, or whoever else was out on the left-hand side, that sort of rotation, it's starkly different to what we're now, we palace ah fielding at the moment.

Transfer Speculations and Squad Needs

00:25:36
officialgspn
One of the breaking pieces of news today is a palace linked with Eddie and Kettier from Arsenal for only the 10,000th time. and So it will be interesting to see if perhaps they feel the need to bring in another attacking option. um Joe, what are your thoughts? is it Do you think the way to fix this is it through Is it through purchasing more players? Is it through a tactical switch? Or is it you or do maybe do you think there there doesn't need to be much change? That actually things will will click into place.
00:26:12
Captain Sniffles
ah Yeah, it would call me a yeah a raving leftist. I think the solution is spending some money for the club here. It's um the blueprint. I think the plan works. It's the execution. That's the problem we've seen last year.
00:26:28
Captain Sniffles
The system can be really fruitful, and it's served Glaster well pretty much everywhere he's been his whole career. He's always played the same way. Doesn't tweak it too much per team, per opposition. And I think it works. So I think it is just about strengthening a few areas. And Ketya is an interesting one, because it does seem the links are more material this time in the past. It's quite possible that it will happen.

It's not, it wouldn't have been my priority, to be honest, to strengthen there. I think you've got Mateta, and as an out and out striker, Eduard's a decent backup. I wonder if, with Eduard's weird kind of withdrawn right forward role he was playing,
00:27:19
Captain Sniffles
um I wonder if that was a bit of a test, a tactical test for something in Ketya could do and would seem a bit more suited to than Eduard.
00:27:32
Captain Sniffles
bit nippy, a bit more mobile, probably a bit more comfortable on the ball. So it'd be interesting to see how that plays out. i But yeah, I think for me, the priorities would be probably just more support for Mitchell, because I think it seems that Glastner doesn't massively fancy schlepping as a left wing back right now. And he can't do it all alone. It's a really taxing job and he looked leggy I think against West Ham towards the end and a more so just a more experienced sensor back to help out Mark Gahey there like Anderson did. Rich is a reality both great players but they're also not experienced top division sensor halves and I think you can kind of coach
00:28:26
Captain Sniffles
were one in real time, the more experienced players but Mark, Uncle Mark trying to do both. Great guy, great communicator though he is, it's difficult. um And also if one of them gets injured where the power's going from there. So i'd I'd still like to see le croi LaCroix come in, and apparently the club are readying a second bid for him from Wolfsburg. um That rapid pace covering against counter-attack would be really helpful. And then, yeah, A left wing back, I don't know who who that would necessarily be, but maybe the priority is for me. But very interested to see how Winkettia plays out with it, if he does come in.

Yeah, some great points there, Joe. I mean, as you said, I think with a Premier League season, it's always good to have backup for every single position. Because as we know, ah there are various injuries as international football and it takes the year takes its toll on these players. So um it'd be interesting to see if Crystal Palace gets anyone in and ah tune in with us throughout the week. and We'll have any breaking developments about any further departures or any further income.
00:29:32
officialgspn
I mean, it's quite interesting. I saw today, so far, Palaces ah have have sold players for a sum of ah total market value of 104.2 million.
00:29:44
officialgspn
So that's a fair bit of moolah, as they would say.
00:29:48
Captain Sniffles
yeah
00:29:49
officialgspn
So it'd be interesting to see if they reinvest that or if that's going to be tucked away to keep Palace nice a nice and healthy club without having to worry about the, I was going to say PPE, but that's not the right one.
00:30:02
officialgspn
PPEs, the protection, yeah
00:30:04
Captain Sniffles
Well, I need it.
