That's right, you have your calendar out? Are you ready for your stickers? Diamond, do you already have your sticker on there for today? i know you love those stickers. Let's get those stickers out and let's put our sticker on for today because we're about to read the Bible today.

Book of 1 Samuel: Rejecting God as King

00:00:47
Speaker
We are reading through the book of Saul, but before we get to there, or book of Saul, book of 1 Samuel, and we will be reading about Saul today. But before we get started with that, let me welcome everybody who is joining me today, whether you are watching or listening, and whether you are here via TikTok or YouTube or my site or Spotify or whatever your favorite podcasting app is, thank you for being here.
00:01:13
Speaker
I really appreciate your audience, and I'm so glad that you are here with me reading the Bible this year. It's great to know that God is leading people to to this event, and I'm so excited about that. So, as I mentioned, we are reading in the book of 1 Samuel, and as we saw yesterday, we saw that God's people are turning away from God and rejecting Him as their king.
00:01:39
Speaker
They want a king they can see. And today we're going to be introduced to the man that God will have serve as king over the people.

Saul's Quest for the Lost Donkeys

00:01:51
Speaker
And as I kind of gave away a moment ago, his name is Saul.
00:01:56
Speaker
So let's head into our reading today. Today's reading comes from 1 Samuel chapter 9. And ah let's see, chapter 10 as well.
00:02:08
Speaker
Is that right?
00:02:12
Speaker
Oh, you know what? I didn't read the whole thing. i didn't I thought that was part of the next um
00:02:19
Speaker
next day's chapter. Well, I guess I'll be finishing the reading today. i've reread that same section several times, and I never realized that I had not read all of it. I'd only read chapter 9. And so I guess we will be ah reading chapter 9 and 10.
00:02:34
Speaker
So let's go ahead and head into it. Now I'm excited to see because I read a little bit ahead, but I was trying really hard to be good and not read ahead too far.
00:02:44
Speaker
All right, so ah the first section is called Looking for Lost Donkeys in Chapter 9. Now there was a young man named Saul, and people said good things about him.
00:02:57
Speaker
No other young man was quite like him. He was a head taller than the other young men. Saul's father had donkeys, and one day his donkeys got lost.
00:03:10
Speaker
So he told Saul, go look for our donkeys and take a servant with you. Saul looked all over the hill country, but he didn't find them there.
00:03:21
Speaker
So Saul and his servant went to another place, but they didn't find their donkeys. They went through the land of Benjamin's family group. They did not find any donkeys.
00:03:34
Speaker
Saul and the servant went to one more place. And Saul said, we better go home. My dad will worry about us more than the donkeys. But the servant said, prophet lives near here.
00:03:49
Speaker
He sees and tells God's plans. Everyone looks up to him and whatever he says comes true. Maybe he can tell us where to find

God Chooses Saul as King

00:03:57
Speaker
the donkeys. Well, what can we give him?
00:04:00
Speaker
asked Saul. We have no more food in our bags and we didn't bring any gifts with us. I have some silver, said the servant. I can give that that to the prophet and that way he will tell us which way to go.
00:04:15
Speaker
All right, said Saul, then let's go.
00:04:20
Speaker
Saul and his servant walked up the hill to town. Some girls were coming from the town and they were going to get water from the hill at the well. Is the prophet here?
00:04:32
Speaker
asked Saul. Yes, they said. He just came to town today. But hurry, the people are giving gifts on the altar today, and he will be going there to eat, and people won't eat until he gets there.
00:04:45
Speaker
He has to pray for what they are giving. Then the people will eat. So go now, and you should be able to find him.
00:04:54
Speaker
Saul and his servant went into the town. Right then, Samuel was coming toward them, and he was on his way to the altar. Samuel knew about Saul.
00:05:07
Speaker
God had said the day before, I'm sending a man to you. He will come about this time tomorrow. Put oil on his head. Choose him to be my people's king.
00:05:20
Speaker
He will save them from their enemies.
00:05:24
Speaker
Now Saul was coming into town and God told Samuel, here's the man told you about. He will be my people's king.
00:05:34
Speaker
So Saul came up to Samuel at the gate. Could you tell me where the prophet's house is? He asked. I'm the prophet,

Anointing and Prophecy Fulfillment

00:05:43
Speaker
said Samuel. Go up ahead of me to the altar. You are to eat with me today.
00:05:48
Speaker
Tomorrow morning, I'll tell you what's in your heart. Then you may go home. And don't worry about the donkeys. Your father has found them. All God's people want you to be the king.
00:06:02
Speaker
Why are you saying that to me? asks Saul. My father's family is the smallest. All the other families are more important than we are. But Samuel took Saul and his servant with him, and he gave them the best seeds.
00:06:17
Speaker
There were about 30 them.
00:06:22
Speaker
Samuel talked to the cook. Remember the piece of meat I told you to save? Bring it here. So the cook brought the meat and he gave it to Saul. This meat was saved for you, said Samuel.
00:06:36
Speaker
Eat it. It was saved for this special time. So Saul ate with Samuel. After dinner, they went back to town and Samuel took Saul up on the roof of his house.
00:06:48
Speaker
They talked for a while and then Saul spent the night at Samuel's house. The sun began to come up the next morning, and Samuel called to Saul, Get ready. It's time to go. I'm going to send you home.
00:07:02
Speaker
So Saul got ready. Then Saul and Samuel went outside. They went to the edge of town. Samuel said, Tell your servant to go on.
00:07:13
Speaker
I want you to stay here for a while. God has a message for me to give you. So the servant went on ahead.
00:07:23
Speaker
Chapter 10, Long Live Our King!
00:07:28
Speaker
Samuel took out a small jar of oil. He put some oil on Saul's head. He then kissed Saul. He said, God has made you king of his people.
00:07:41
Speaker
As you travel today, you will meet two men. They'll say that the donkeys were found, and they'll say that your father is worried about you. Then go to the big oak tree, said Samuel.
00:07:55
Speaker
You will meet three men there. One will carry three goats. One will carry three loaves of bread. One will carry a jug of wine.
00:08:07
Speaker
And they'll say hello to you and they'll give you two loaves of bread. Take the bread. Then you'll come near a town, said Samuel. A parade of prophets will come down the hill and they'll play harps, tramp tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they'll tell God's messages.
00:08:26
Speaker
Then God's Spirit will come on you. You'll have power and you'll tell God's messages too. You will change.
00:08:38
Speaker
You will be different. After this, do whatever you need to do. God is with you. Go on ahead of me. I'll come to see you next week.
00:08:50
Speaker
Then I'll tell you what to do, said Samuel. So Saul left Samuel, and God changed Saul's heart. Everything happened just the way Saul said it would.
00:09:04
Speaker
The parade of prophets met Saul. God's Spirit came upon him. He had power. Then he told God's messages along with the prophets.
00:09:16
Speaker
People saw Saul with the prophets and they asked, What happened to Saul? Is he a prophet too? So that became a saying. People would say, is Saul a prophet too?
00:09:29
Speaker
Saul's uncle asked, Where were you? We went to look for the donkeys, said Saul, but we couldn't find them, so we went to see Samuel. And what did Samuel tell you?
00:09:41
Speaker
asked his uncle. He said that the donkeys had been found, said Saul, but he didn't tell his uncle about being the king.

Affirming Saul's Kingship and Doubts

00:09:50
Speaker
Now Samuel called God's people together. He told them that God said, I took my people out of Egypt. I saved you from your enemies, but now you've turned against me.
00:10:05
Speaker
You have asked for a king to rule you. So now you must come and stand in front of me. All the family groups came near. God picked the family group of Benjamin.
00:10:20
Speaker
So the families from the group of Benjamin came near. God picked Saul's family. At last, God picked Saul.
00:10:32
Speaker
But no one could find Saul. They asked God, Is Saul here yet? Yes, said God. Saul is hiding behind the boxes and bags.
00:10:44
Speaker
So the people ran over to the bags and they pulled Saul out. He stood up. He was tall. His head and shoulders were above everyone else. See this man, said Samuel.
00:10:58
Speaker
God chose him to be your king. There is no one else like him. Long live our king, the people shouted. Samuel told the people the rules of having a king.
00:11:12
Speaker
He wrote the rules down and then he sent the people home. Saul went home too and brave men went with him. God had worked in their hearts. There were some men who did bad things.
00:11:26
Speaker
They said, how can Saul save us? They hated Saul and didn't bring gifts to him. But Saul didn't say anything about it.
00:11:38
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.

Reflections on Divine Timing vs. Fate

00:11:46
Speaker
So today i want our personal application ah to be focused on divine timing God everything that is going happen. And God knows everything that is going to happen.
00:11:57
Speaker
and There are a couple of ways to look at things in life. Sometimes people look at them and they say that things are fate. when And the difference between fate and God's divine timing is that things of fate are considered to where you have no choice in the matter.
00:12:19
Speaker
And God's divine timing takes into account our free will. And yet God knows what will happen. even with our free will, part of that.
00:12:30
Speaker
We can't mess up God's free will or or God's timing. Things happen exactly when God says that they will happen. And in order to show that God knew what was going to happen, he told Samuel what time Saul would be coming.
00:12:49
Speaker
and he And he directed Samuel to tell Saul what things were going to happen on his way. And these would be signs for Saul that he would know that God was in charge and that these were things that he was supposed to to do.
00:13:05
Speaker
and that way he would know that he is supposed to be king. But we see that Saul may be scared because he was hiding. And it says he was very tall and he was hiding behind boxes and bags.
00:13:16
Speaker
So he's a bit scared, it looks like, to be king. I think I might be scared too if God told me to be a king. That's a big responsibility. and ah but But God knows that we can do it. in need And he will bring his spirit back.
00:13:33
Speaker
to ah complete what he wants to have done. And this is what we see he did with Saul as well, is that when he needs something to be done, he works through us and he is not incapable of putting his spirit on anyone.
00:13:47
Speaker
We saw even in the past where we had Balamb who was to pray bad things for God's people. He was not even really a believer.
00:13:58
Speaker
He was just talking to God as one of many gods. And so he he was and he wasn't even using the right methods originally to communicate with God. And God's spirit came upon him and used him to make a prophecy.
00:14:13
Speaker
So we see that God can send his spirit to anyone he chooses. And in this case, he has chosen Saul to be his king. And ah God has his reasons for everything that he does.
00:14:28
Speaker
We don't always know those reasons, but we know that God works everything together for good. And so we're going to see later on what kind of a king Saul is and who he is.
00:14:41
Speaker
But today we see that Saul is a little bit scared.
00:14:48
Speaker
And we can all be a bit scared, can't we? I know it can be very scary to to think about things. But something to remember is that we have a tendency to imagine things to be worse than they actually will be.
00:15:02
Speaker
Because we just have to trust in God that he is with us. And God's divine time will work everything out at the right time. We saw that with Ruth, that even ah though Naomi's husband and sons died, God was working everything to good to put everything in just the right time.
00:15:22
Speaker
So we will see over and over throughout the Bible that our application for the day is to remember, because we can forget that we need all of these examples to remind us on a regular basis that God's timing is perfect.
00:15:39
Speaker
And he is working everything out to be just right at the right time. And he is answering their request for, he's answering the people's request to send them a king.
00:15:54
Speaker
So I think that's all I have for us today. And if you are curious or hungry about more details, I would encourage you to head up your big Bible to check out 1 Samuel chapters 9 and 10 and to look at if there there's anything more that you wish to read about.
00:16:15
Speaker
um And I think that's

Encouragement to Engage with the Bible

00:16:17
Speaker
about it today. There's not a whole lot to go on about. So thank you for being here with me today. And if you feel that God has lit your light today, then please consider clicking that light button. It looks like a like button, but it's actually a light.
00:16:32
Speaker
Sometimes it looks like a heart, but it's a light button. And together, let's light up the world for Jesus and to show some light for this event. And let's spread the word about reading God's word.
00:16:45
Speaker
I will see everybody again tomorrow.
