We are reading in 1 Samuel chapter 21, Psalm 34 1-22, and Psalm 56: 1-4,  13 today. We will be introduced to David's beautiful and inspirational  faith filled song writing during his time of running away from King  Saul. In our discussion today we will talk about being able to go to the  Psalms for comfort when we are experiencing difficulties and remember  the difficulties David had. We will be encouraged to remember that even  though David was going through difficult times he never lost faith in  God to be with him. He didn't get angry with God or ask, "Why am I  having to go through this?!" He accepted what God allowed and had  complete faith in God, even when running away for his life. We may not  experience needing to run for our lives, but when we experience  difficulties in life may we always remember David and his never ending faith in and love for our wonderful, caring, all-knowing God who uses everything for  good.

David's Journey and Psalms

00:02:31
Speaker
We are reading in the book of 1 Samuel right now, and today we're also going to be introduced to some of David's psalms. David was a big author of the psalms. He, as we know, played the harp, but you may not have known he was also a songwriter.
00:02:47
Speaker
And a lot of our psalms were written by David, and these were written before he was even king, so we can't say King David yet. He's been anointed that he will be the future king, but he is not the king yet.
00:02:59
Speaker
And today we're going to get to see some of the beautiful songs that he wrote about and to God.
00:03:07
Speaker
So if you are following along or just listening, I am opening up our Bible for today, and I am ready for today's reading. How about you?
00:03:18
Speaker
Today's reading is entitled, Goliath's Sword, that's the first section, and this will cover 1 Samuel chapter 21, as well as Psalm 56, verses 1 through 4 and 13.
00:03:34
Speaker
Now, if you remember, David is running away from King Saul because King Saul is trying to kill him. So if you've been following along, you may remember that already. But if you are just joining us today, this is where we were are picking up.
00:03:50
Speaker
David went to the town of Nob. He went to a priest there. The priest was afraid of David. Why did you come by yourself? he asked. The king sent me to do a secret job, said David.
00:04:04
Speaker
I told my men to meet me somewhere else. What do you have to eat? I need five loaves of bread. I'll take anything you can give me. I don't have any plain bread, said the priest, but there is some special holy bread here.
00:04:21
Speaker
We are on a special job, said David. So the priest gave him the special bread. Do you have a spear or a sword here? asked David.
00:04:33
Speaker
I was in a hurry, so I didn't bring mine. Goliath's sword is here, said the priest. Take it if you want it. It's the only sword here. There is no other sword like that one, said David.
00:04:47
Speaker
I'll take it.
00:04:49
Speaker
Now one of Saul's shepherds was there that day, and he saw David. Then David ran away. He knew he had to get away from Saul. He went to Gath in the enemy's land.
00:05:03
Speaker
The king of Gath had servants, and they asked, Isn't this David? He is the one that song is about. The song that says Saul killed a few thousand, but David killed tens of thousands.
00:05:17
Speaker
David heard what they said, so he was afraid of the king of Gath. David wrote this song in Gath. Be kind to me, God. Men are chasing me.
00:05:29
Speaker
All day these proud men fight. I will trust in you when I am afraid. I praise your word. I trust in God. I will not be afraid.
00:05:40
Speaker
What can people do to me? I can walk with God. He gives light to my life. Then David acted like he had gone crazy.
00:05:51
Speaker
He made marks on the doors at the gate. He did it with his finger names. He let spit run out of his mouth and down his beard. The king of Gath said, See that?
00:06:04
Speaker
David is crazy. Don't bring him to me. Do I need any more crazy men around here? Did you bring him here so I could watch him? Does he have to come into my house?

Themes in Psalm 34

00:06:18
Speaker
Taste and See Psalm 34 verses 1 through 10 The king of Gath sent David away. Then David wrote this song.
00:06:30
Speaker
I will always tell how wonderful God is. My lips will always praise Him. My soul will tell how great God is. Let everyone who has problems hear and be glad.
00:06:44
Speaker
Praise God with me. People shine with joy when they love God. Their faces never look like they feel bad. I called God and He heard me.
00:06:57
Speaker
God saved me from all my troubles. God's angel stays around people who love God. He saves them. Taste and see.
00:07:08
Speaker
God is good. Good things come to people who trust him. People who love him have all they need. Lions might get hungry and weak, but people who look to God have every good thing they need.
00:07:28
Speaker
Come, my children, Psalm 34, 11 through 22.
00:07:35
Speaker
Come, my children, and listen to me. I will teach you to love God. If you want to love life, then don't say bad things. If you want to have many good days, don't lie.
00:07:49
Speaker
Turn away from sin. Do good. Look for the way of peace. God watches over people who do what's right. God listens to them.
00:08:01
Speaker
But God turns his face away from people who sin. Nobody will remember them. People who do right cry to God and he hears.
00:08:12
Speaker
He saves them from all their troubles. God is near people who have broken hearts. God saves people who are sad. A person who does what's right might see lots of troubles, but God saves him from all his troubles.
00:08:30
Speaker
God takes care of him, and none of his bones will be broken. Sin will kill bad people. The enemies of God's people will not be saved, but God saves his people.
00:08:46
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.

Reflections and Encouragement

00:08:50
Speaker
David wrote a lot of wonderful songs to and about God.
00:08:57
Speaker
And remember, David is running to stay away from Saul. He's trying to stay alive because Saul is trying to kill him. So let's notice what we don't see.
00:09:08
Speaker
We don't see that David is angry at what is happening to him. He has been told that he will be king, and yet here he is running for his life from the current king, and he didn't do anything wrong.
00:09:25
Speaker
We don't see God, we don't see David blaming God or anybody and saying, why is this happening to me? Why is God allowing this to happen? Instead, David praises God all the time, and he looks to God.
00:09:40
Speaker
God is growing David's faith even more. And instead of responding with hate or anger or sadness, David may be scared, but he is putting his trust and his faith in God.
00:09:55
Speaker
And that's, of course, our daily application today. We may not always feel like writing songs, but that would be a good thing to do when we are scared like David, when we are sad, that we can look to God and he will cheer us up.
00:10:11
Speaker
I know sometimes when we are going through hard times, it can be frustrating and it can be difficult. And we say, why is God allowing this to happen? And it can be hard to trust that God is working everything to good.
00:10:24
Speaker
But God was taking a long time to grow David into the man he wanted him to be. He was already on the right track, but nobody is perfect. And neither was David. And even though it looks like David didn't do anything wrong, God was still pruning him.
00:10:40
Speaker
and he was growing him to be even better. And he was increasing his faith by giving him opportunities to practice his faith. So our daily application is that when we are having difficult times, that we can remember David and the way that he looked to God for everything and the way he trusted in God for everything.
00:11:03
Speaker
And that he didn't get angry or upset He was definitely a bit scared trying to, you know, run away from Saul, but he trusted in God to take care of him. And God did. God took care of him.
00:11:18
Speaker
And that is our daily application today.
00:11:22
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are encouraged and will remember David. when you have something going on and you are having a difficult time, then maybe you'd open up your Bible and look to the Psalms.
00:11:35
Speaker
And maybe this would be a good one here. We have Psalm 56. And today we read Psalm 34. I noticed that they're out of order there, but remember our Bible is chronological.
00:11:46
Speaker
So although they're presented at later numbers, that's the order in which they were written. And then we have psalm more of Psalm 34.
00:11:57
Speaker
11 through 22. So it looks like Psalm 34 and Psalm 56 are very encouraging to remind us to look to God when we have troubles.
00:12:13
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me today. i hope that you have enjoyed our reading and that you enjoyed the Psalms. And if you are looking for more detail, head up your Big Bible and enjoy some more of David's Psalms.

Audience Engagement Call-to-Action

00:12:26
Speaker
Whether you have been watching or listening today, if you feel that God has lit your light, I would ask that you feel encouraged to click that light button. I've recently... ah was reading something today and it mentioned something about Apple Music having reviews.
00:12:44
Speaker
I don't know anything about that because I don't have Apple products, but ah it looks like that there may be a way for my Apple listeners to review the podcast.
00:12:56
Speaker
So if that is something that you feel led to do, I would like to encourage you to potentially do that as well as subscribing to my channel if you have not done so already. And if you have the ability to hit that light button on any other channel, whether it is TikTok or YouTube or Amazon Music or YouTube Music or Pandora, then I would ask that you consider lighting that light if you feel that God has lit your light.
00:13:25
Speaker
And together, let's light up the world, light up the YouTube, light up the podcasting apps, and light up the internet for God. and spread the word about reading God's word. Thank you so much for joining me here today, and I will see your see everyone tomorrow.
