In today's reading we will read Luke Chapter 2:39-52 and Matthew Chapter 2. Today we will read about several of the prophecies that God fulfilled in the Old Covenant about Jesus- that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem, God would take Him out of Egypt and Jesus would be called a Nazarene. We will also see God's great provision for Jesus to protect Him while He was growing up.

In today's discussion for daily application we will talk about the probability of ANYONE being able to fulfill the over 320 prophecies in the Old Covenant about the coming Messiah and why God gave us the prophecies- so that we would know without a shadow of a doubt that HE had caused all these things to happen, not anyone else! God told us in Isaiah 46:9-10 that there is no other like Him, He is the only God, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, His counsel shall stand and He will accomplish all His purpose. God alone is responsible for Jesus fulfilling all the prophecies, not Jesus himself. And the fact that we have found the Dead Sea Scrolls and have been able to confirm that they were written over  one hundred years before Jesus was born tells us that the prophecies were indeed written long before Jesus was born. We can know with certainty that Jesus is in fact the Messiah that God sent to save the world from sin, so that mankind could be reconciled to God and have shalom- wholeness, peace. God's Word is TRUE. Our faith is not based on a fairy tale or myths. Faith in God is not simply for those who are weak and need a crutch for something to believe in. Jesus is, indeed, THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life. Amen.

Introduction and Daily Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Good day everybody! Today is August 13th. My name is Robin and I am with In The Family Way Coaching. It is my privilege and pleasure to present to you today's reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:18
Speaker
We are going through the entire Bible this year in chronological order and we are getting the big picture. If you are new to this event, I don't want you to be discouraged by the fact that we are reading a quote, kids Bible.
00:00:31
Speaker
This Bible is simply like a Reader's Digest type condensed version of the Big Bible. And it does give us the complete big picture of God's story and plan for us from all the way from Genesis through Revelation.
00:00:46
Speaker
And because it's not worthwhile for us to read God's word without understanding it and without knowing how it applies to you in your life, we have a daily application for every day's reading.
00:00:57
Speaker
And it's not something that we just pull out of the air. This is what we get from each day's reading and what it shows us. Part of God's characteristic or how to behave or how to not behave.

Future Series and Understanding Prophecies

00:01:10
Speaker
So thank you for joining me, whether you are following finding me on your podcast or whether you are following along on video. I'm so glad that God has led you to this event. I am enjoying reading this event this year, and I am considering doing a going deeper version next year because there are big versions of the of the entire Bible in chronological order.
00:01:35
Speaker
This is a shortened version, and ah the other versions are the complete, full Bible with every single detail. And I am considering doing a Going Deeper series next year.
00:01:47
Speaker
So please pray for me in that, ah that if that is what God is putting on my heart to do next year, that I would be faithful to obey and to do it. I am already a little bit excited, but I don't want it to be my project. I want it to be something that God is leading me to do.
00:02:04
Speaker
ah Because I love studying his word and I love talking about the things that that God teaches us. And so I like to joke and say that if God didn't want anybody to know, he surely wouldn't tell me.
00:02:19
Speaker
So I am happy to use this avenue as a way to share God's word. Because love spreading the word about reading God's word. So thank you.
00:02:29
Speaker
And if you are joining me on that commitment calendar, it's time to get that out and your sticker or whatever you're using to mark it off. Because guess what? You're about to hear the Bible today.
00:02:45
Speaker
We are going to be reading in the book of Luke and Matthew today. Today we are going to be reading Matthew chapter 2 as well as the balance of Luke chapter 2 verses 39 through 40.

Significance of Prophecies and Fulfillment

00:02:59
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing God's fulfillment of prophecy. What is prophecy? Prophecy means to tell what the future is going to bring.
00:03:13
Speaker
I have to think that God gave us a desire to know the future and he satisfies that hunger in us, but we need to satisfy it the right way. It's kind of like the difference between choosing junk food and nutritious food to eat.
00:03:28
Speaker
God gives us a hunger for our bodies. He made our bodies to need food and he made us to need him and his spirit and his word. And God fulfills that.
00:03:40
Speaker
And I think he gave us a desire to know the future so that we would be hungry to know it. But instead of looking to worldly ways of doing so, such as ah tarot cards, talking to spirits, um futuristic things like a crystal ball, psychics, people we would call mediums, those are ugly ways to try to fulfill that desire that we have.
00:04:09
Speaker
Those are the world's ways trying to come up with the answers and what is the future holds. And God's word tells us that those ways are the wrong ways, but the right ways can be found and satisfied in reading his word.
00:04:24
Speaker
And God fulfills that hunger when he gives us Jesus, because Jesus fulfills the prophecies as to what is going to happen.
00:04:36
Speaker
God told us way back in Isaiah that he would tell us what it is he is going to do and that he doesn't do anything without telling us first. And why does he do this?
00:04:47
Speaker
Simply to satisfy our hunger for the future? No, he does this so that we may know. for certainty that when these things come about, it was he who told us they were going to happen and that we could not give credit to false idols or to anybody else that we would know and be able to give the glory to God for the things that came to pass.
00:05:12
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing many of the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled all throughout the the the reading of the new covenant today is filled with many of them.
00:05:25
Speaker
And what I love is that these accounts that we read in Luke and Matthew are telling us where they were found. And I wanted us to know, this is very interesting.
00:05:36
Speaker
There was mathematician by the name of, let's see, what was his name? Professor... Peter Stoner.
00:05:49
Speaker
He was a chairman at the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy at Pasadena City College. That's in California. And... He was also the chairman of the science division at Westmont College.
00:06:02
Speaker
I believe that's also in California. And he wrote a book some time ago, and it it is called Science Speaks. And in it, he calculated the probability of one person being able to fulfill prophecies it Now, there are over 300. By one calculation, there are about, I believe it says, 322 prophecies in the Old Testament where God has told us things about what would happen and that Jesus would fulfill.
00:06:40
Speaker
So there is something that we call odds. And for instance, if you're familiar with playing the lottery ah in 2018, for instance, the Mega Millions lottery had a...
00:06:53
Speaker
um had a jackpot of something like $1.8 billion or millions or billions, think $1.6 billion jackpot in October 2018. And the odds winning that entire $1.6 billion was a mere 302,575,350. So there only had to be little over 300 million people.
00:07:07
Speaker
and the odds of and that entire one point six billion dollars was a mere three hundred and two million five hundred seventy five thousand three hundred and fifty had to be over a little over three hundred million people
00:07:26
Speaker
The odds of Jesus fulfilling even just eight of the 322 or so prophecies is one in 100 trillion.
00:07:40
Speaker
That's a really big number. It has so many zeros that in ah greater mathematics, we don't write out that number of zeros. We say that it is one.
00:07:51
Speaker
ah we say that it is 10 to the 17th power. Now, if you take even just 48 of those prophecies out of 322, the odds of one person fulfilling only 48 of them becomes a number so big that I can only express it as 1 10 to the power.
00:08:15
Speaker
he to the one hundred and fifty seventh power So instead of being 100 trillion with 10 to the 17th power, the number is so ginormous.
00:08:27
Speaker
That's not a real word, but I love it. It is so huge that we can only express it by saying 10 the one hundred and fifty seventh power.
00:08:39
Speaker
that's only for forty eight of the prophecies But Jesus fulfilled well over 320 prophecies that God gave us in the Old Testament.
00:08:52
Speaker
Why? so that we would know without a doubt that it was God alone who brought all of these things to pass. We have seen so far that Jesus was born in the city of Bethlehem.
00:09:07
Speaker
We have seen that he will be a descendant of the King David. And today we are going to read some more prophecies about Jesus. And this is one of the many ways we can know that our God truly does exist in a world today where we are dominated by scientific thinking.
00:09:31
Speaker
Even now, some of our science, which just means an understanding of the world around us, finds evidence to agree with the fact that God does exist. We have games with that we play called role-playing games. We have games that are ah where people imagine and play. And we've always done this as kids, right? We pretend and we play.
00:09:52
Speaker
But God is real. These stories that we read, that we've been reading all year, are real. Our God does do amazing things. Nothing is impossible for our God.
00:10:08
Speaker
Jesus was born from a woman who had never been with a man the way a husband would be with her. And the Holy Spirit gave her the baby within her to be born as a person.
00:10:22
Speaker
These things sound amazing and unbelievable, but God did them. And these are how we can know that these amazing things that happened thousands of years ago really did exist. They really did come to pass.
00:10:40
Speaker
And there are other things that are still coming. So if God was truthful in fulfilling and in giving us foreknowledge, prophecies of things to come in Messiah, Jesus,
00:10:55
Speaker
then we can trust with certainty that the things that God says are still to come are still coming. They will happen. We may not know when, because Jesus tells us that no one knows the days that these things will happen, only the Father himself.
00:11:11
Speaker
But we can have certainty and trust that God will do the good work that he began, as he stated in Isaiah, when he said that he would bring about
00:11:24
Speaker
the good work that he has begun He says in Isaiah 46, verses 9 and 10, "...remember the former things of old, for I am God, and no other.
00:11:39
Speaker
I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done." saying, my counsel shall stand and I will accomplish all my purpose.
00:11:58
Speaker
God has purpose. He has purpose for his plans. He has purpose for you. He has purpose for me. And today we are going to have the privilege of reading some of those prophecies that Jesus's birth and other items fulfilled.

The Wise Men and King Herod

00:12:16
Speaker
So let's dig and and enjoy and be thankful for God's provision as he provided for for Jesus when he was here, as well as the prophecies that he gave us and that Jesus fulfilled.
00:12:34
Speaker
Our first section actually is entitled Wise Men from the East.
00:12:42
Speaker
It was some time after Jesus had been born in Bethlehem and King Herod was ruling. Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and they began asking about Jesus.
00:12:54
Speaker
Where is the child who was born to be king of the Jews? We saw a star in the east and it was his star. We have come to worship this baby king. Now King Herod heard about this question and he was upset.
00:13:11
Speaker
all of Jerusalem was upset. So King Herod called the worship leaders and the Jewish teachers together, and he asked them, where is the promised one supposed to be born?
00:13:23
Speaker
And they said he was to be born in Bethlehem. They said that the prophet Micah had written these words from God. Bethlehem, you are a small town in Judah.
00:13:37
Speaker
But someone who will rule my people will come from you. He will lead my people like a shepherd.
00:13:46
Speaker
King Herod called a secret meeting with the wise men, and he found out when they first saw the star. Then he told them to go to Bethlehem. And look carefully for this baby, he said, and when you find him, report back to me.
00:14:01
Speaker
Then I can go worship him too.
00:14:05
Speaker
The wise men left the king and they followed the star. It went ahead of them and then stopped. The wise men saw that the star was over a house and they were full of joy. They went into the house and there they saw the child Jesus.
00:14:24
Speaker
He was with his mother Mary. He was not a newborn baby. They did not arrive on the night of his birth, as so often we may portray and what we call the Christmas story.
00:14:36
Speaker
Jesus was approximately three years old during this time.
00:14:42
Speaker
The wise men saw, oops, sorry, the wise men bowed down and worshipped Jesus. Then they opened their rich gifts. They gave him gold, sweet-smelling incense, and myrrh.
00:14:59
Speaker
Now God talked to the wise men in a dream, and he told them not to go back to King Herod. So they took another road back to their own land. Then an angel of God came to Joseph in a dream, and the angel said, Get up!
00:15:14
Speaker
Take the child and his mother. Leave for Egypt and stay there until I tell you to come back. King Herod will look for the child. He will try to kill him.
00:15:26
Speaker
So Joseph got up and that night he took Mary and Jesus and they left for Egypt and they stayed there until King Herod died. And that made the prophet Hosea's words come true.
00:15:41
Speaker
Hosea had said these words from God. He was my son. i took him out of Egypt. After a while, King Herod saw that the wise men had fooled him.
00:15:54
Speaker
And he was angry. So he gave orders to kill all the baby boys in Bethlehem. And he killed any who were two years old or younger. Ah, so Jesus was about two years old, not three. Sorry about that.
00:16:09
Speaker
That made the prophet Jeremiah's words come true. A crying voice comes from Ramah. It sounds like Rachel crying for her children.
00:16:20
Speaker
She won't let any anyone cheer her up. Her children have died.
00:16:26
Speaker
Now in time Herod died and then God sent an angel again. He appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. The angel said, You can take Jesus and Mary back home now.
00:16:40
Speaker
The people who tried to kill Jesus are dead. So Joseph took Jesus and Mary and they went back to Israel. But Joseph heard that Herod's son was now king.
00:16:52
Speaker
So Joseph was afraid to go back to Bethlehem. And he was told in a dream to stay away from Bethlehem. So Joseph and his family went to live in Galilee.
00:17:05
Speaker
They lived there. And they lived in a town called Nazareth. So the words of the prophets came true. They had said that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.
00:17:19
Speaker
So Jesus grew up in Nazareth. He grew strong and wise, and God's kind love was with him.
00:17:31
Speaker
Luke chapter 2, verses 41 to 52. In the big city.

Jesus in Jerusalem at Passover

00:17:38
Speaker
Now Jesus is older. Once a year, Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem, and they went for the Passover holiday. And when he was 12 years old, he went too.
00:17:51
Speaker
After the special holiday for God, Joseph and Mary began the trip home. But Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. Joseph and Mary didn't know that Jesus had stayed behind, and they thought he was with their friends or their family, and so they traveled for a whole day without him.
00:18:09
Speaker
But then Joseph and Mary began to look for Jesus, and they looked to see if he was with their family, and they looked to see if he was with their friends. But they could not find So they went back to Jerusalem and they looked through the city for three days.
00:18:26
Speaker
And at last they found Jesus. He was at the worship house. He was sitting with the teachers. He was listening to them and he was also asking them questions.
00:18:38
Speaker
Everyone was surprised by how much he understood. They were surprised at his answers. When Joseph and Mary saw Jesus, they were surprised too.
00:18:52
Speaker
And Mary said, "'Son, why have you done this to us? We have been worried about you. We've been looking for you.' "'Why did you have to look for me?' Jesus asked.
00:19:04
Speaker
"'Didn't you know I would be in my father's house?'
00:19:10
Speaker
They didn't understand what Jesus was talking about, but Mary thought about it, and she kept these things as rich gifts in her heart. Jesus went back to Nazareth with Joseph and Mary, and Jesus obeyed them, and he grew.
00:19:28
Speaker
He grew taller. He grew wiser. He grew as a friend to God, and he grew as a friend to people, too.
00:19:39
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:19:45
Speaker
Did you love today's reading? I have a feeling we're going to love most of the readings.
00:19:53
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Aside from the prophecies that God fulfilled, we see God's great provision to take care of Jesus, to keep him safe.
00:20:07
Speaker
He sent an angel to talk to Joseph. And once again, we see that Joseph obeyed God. He did everything he was told right away. We also see obedience from the Magi, the wise men who came to worship him.
00:20:24
Speaker
So once again, we can see that God will provide for us. God provided for Jesus and God will provide for us as well. He provided for Mary. He provided for Joseph.
00:20:36
Speaker
And God is so faithful. He always provides for us too. We just need to seek his kingdom first and God will take care of the rest. God is so faithful, and I hope that you feel that God has lit your light to give you a reason to know that your faith in him is true, to know that he is real.

Reliability of Biblical Prophecies

00:20:58
Speaker
And we have things that we can explain to those who may not believe, saying that, oh, he was just a special guy. He was he was just a prophet. He was just a man who lived. He wasn't anything special.
00:21:10
Speaker
He was. He fulfilled over 300 prophecies. The odds of him doing that are too great a number. And in case you are interested in that book, that book, again, is called Science Speaks, and it is written by Professor...
00:21:33
Speaker
Peter W. Stoner, S-T-O-N-E-R. And his his book has been quoted in many times. He's been quoted by Josh McDowell and...
00:21:47
Speaker
And even in the foreword to the book, his book was peer reviewed. We would call that and he put that like in a scientific journal. It was reviewed by a committee of the American Scientific Affiliation members and by the executive council of that same group.
00:22:03
Speaker
And it's been found in general to be dependable and accurate in regard to the scientific material presented. The mathematical analysis included is based upon principles of probability, which are thoroughly sound.
00:22:16
Speaker
And Professor Stoner has applied these principles in a proper and convincing way. So it's not just fake news. It's not just something that somebody wrote to try to make the gospel sound good, to try to make the Bible sound good, to try to make Jesus sound good.
00:22:34
Speaker
He applied the brain that God gave him and he found that God absolutely did it at the odds of that, all of those things happening.
00:22:45
Speaker
And the other thing too, is that the, um the Dead Sea Scrolls that were found, because some people might be tempted to say, well, he, all of the Bible was written after the fact. So it was written in what we call hindsight. So it was written in such a way that it would portray him as having fulfilled those prophecies.
00:23:03
Speaker
Well, the thing is, is we have, for instance, the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were found to have been written over 100 years before Jesus was born, showing that the Old Covenant writings were accurate in their
00:23:22
Speaker
ah writing down, passing down generations after generations and being on scrolls. So it the old covenant is indeed reliable as as a ah as an old writing.
00:23:38
Speaker
It was not written after the fact. ah God is so good. He even provided us with a historical record showing that the writings are are very, very old, that they existed prior to Jesus's existence so that there could be no ah self-fulfilling prophecies.
00:23:58
Speaker
even if supposedly Jesus had tried to fulfill things himself, he was not in control of where he was born. He was not in control of the Magi coming to see him.
00:24:09
Speaker
He was not in control of his ah earthly dad moving he and Mary to Egypt and then moving to Nazareth.
00:24:20
Speaker
There were things that that were out of Jesus's control before he was old enough to be able to make decisions. So thank you for joining

Conclusion and Encouragement

00:24:30
Speaker
me today. i hope that you feel that God has lit your light and that you feel very strong and solid in your foundation of faith, that you have a reason to give for the hope that is in you, that you feel that God's word has been beneficial to you for teaching.
00:24:47
Speaker
for correction, for instruction, enabling you and equipping you to do the good work that God has set out for you today. ah hope you have a fantastic rest of your day here on August 13th or whatever day you're getting around to reading or watching or listening to today's daily Bible reading.
00:25:06
Speaker
And i will be happy to be here again tomorrow.
