Daily Bible Reading with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching (Audio only)

Today we will be reading 1 Samuel Chapter 28, 31 and 2 Samuel 4:4. We  will be reading about Saul asking God about the battle that he would be fighting soon, but God wasn't answering him so we will see Saul seeking the information from a witch! This was a VERY serious sin. In our discussion today we talk about the ways of witches being detestable to God, and how it is not acceptable for US any more than it was acceptable for Saul, to seek the advice of a witch to find out our future or to talk to dead people. We will also talk about the importance of being patient to wait for God's perfect timing, which is what David did, by not killing Saul while waiting for his time to become king of Israel.

Introduction and Overview

00:00:02
Speaker
Hi there, everyone. Today is Monday. It is March 10th, 2025, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading.
00:00:13
Speaker
We are reading through the entire Bible, and we are using the Day by Day Kids Bible, which is written by Karen Henley. If you are just joining me today, thank you so much for joining me.
00:00:24
Speaker
We will be going through the entire Bible in just one year. And this Bible, although it is considered a kid's Bible, don't be discouraged because this just means that it is written in very easy to understand language.
00:00:39
Speaker
I was

The Day by Day Kids Bible: A Resource for All Ages

00:00:40
Speaker
looking today for ah to see if this Bible was potentially available in Spanish, and I did not find it in Spanish, but I ah did find a listing for it and with that had some reviews.
00:00:53
Speaker
And one of the reviews that somebody gave, they ah were commenting that they were a seminary student, and that means somebody that's going to school to learn how to be like a pastor or a missionary.
00:01:06
Speaker
And they have ah what is called dyslexia. So for them, it is very difficult to read. And for them, it's very cumbersome to read. But what they really loved was this particular Bible.
00:01:20
Speaker
And while they acknowledged that it doesn't cover every single detail, for them, they thought this was actually very important because some of the things can be very tedious and some of the genealogies and some of the more um specific rules that God gave out ah that are not necessarily what we abide by today, can be very tedious and cumbersome to read.
00:01:45
Speaker
And so for someone who is looking to understand the story of the Bible, they commented that this was a great version and that they recommended it to adults and they gave it out as a Bible to new believers who also complimented to them that they enjoyed reading it because it made the Bible very understandable and readable for them.

Robin's Initiatives to Spread the Word

00:02:05
Speaker
I have also given this Bible out to a new believer or somebody who was a potential believer ah for that exact same reason. So it was really nice to see that this opinion is widely shared.
00:02:18
Speaker
I'm so thankful for Karen Henley for writing this version of the Bible. She didn't rewrite the Bible. She just condensed it a little bit and made it very easy to understand.
00:02:29
Speaker
for children and adults. So if you are just new with us today, i hope you stick around and enjoy the reading. I am going to be looking to see about getting my readings done in Spanish.
00:02:41
Speaker
So that was what was prompting me to ah look into that. So hopefully I will be able to come up with some Spanish recordings here in the near future. So if you are listening and your native language is Spanish, I am working on that for you, even though you may very well understand in English.
00:03:00
Speaker
you may be It may be more enjoyable to you to hear this in your own language. And that is what I am striving to do, is unity in the body of Christ as much as I can, and ah and to bring the Bible to as many people as I can.
00:03:15
Speaker
i love spreading the word about reading God's word.
00:03:19

Lessons from 1 Samuel: Saul and David's Story

00:05:06
Speaker
We are reading about David, and today we are going to have some very serious reading as we read through 1 Samuel chapter chapter 31.
00:05:19
Speaker
twenty eight and first samuel chapter thirty one and this will also include some from Samuel chapter four verse four
00:05:33
Speaker
the first section For chapter 28 of 1 Samuel is entitled, The Witch.
00:05:43
Speaker
Now the people David lived with went to fight Saul's enemy, army. They went to fight Saul's army. When Saul saw the enemy, he was scared. So he asked God about the fight.
00:05:57
Speaker
But God didn't answer him.
00:06:01
Speaker
King Saul called his servants. "'Go find a witch,' he said. "'I want to ask what will happen in the fight.' "'There's a witch in Ender,' said his servants.
00:06:14
Speaker
Now Saul had told all witches to leave the land. So he dressed up as another man, and he took two men with him, and that night he went to see the witch.'" Talk to a spirit for me, said Saul.
00:06:29
Speaker
Call up the one I ask for. You know what Saul did, said the woman. He sent all the witches out of the land. You're just trying to trick me. You'll get me killed.
00:06:40
Speaker
No, said Saul. Nothing bad will happen. I promise. Then who do you want to talk to, she asked. Call up Samuel for me, said Saul.
00:06:53
Speaker
Now, Samuel was dead. but he showed himself to the witch. She cried out loudly and said to the king, You've tricked me!
00:07:03
Speaker
You're Saul! Don't be scared, said Saul. What do you see? i see a spirit coming up from the ground, she said.
00:07:15
Speaker
What is he like? asked Saul. He is an old man, she said. He is wearing a robe. Then Saul knew it was Samuel.
00:07:27
Speaker
He bowed down with his face to the ground. Why did you bother me? asked Samuel. Why did you bring me here? I'm in a lot of trouble, said Saul.
00:07:39
Speaker
The enemy is out to fight me and God won't answer me. So I'm asking you what to do. Why do you ask me? said Samuel. God is your enemy now.
00:07:50
Speaker
God has done what he said he would do. He has taken your kingdom away from you and he is giving it to David. It's all because you didn't obey God. Tomorrow, you and your sons will be where I am.
00:08:06
Speaker
Your army will lose the fight.
00:08:10
Speaker
Then Saul fell to the ground. He was full of fear and didn't feel very good or very strong. He hadn't eaten all that day and night.
00:08:23
Speaker
The witch went over to Saul. She could tell he was very upset. Look here, she said. I did what you asked. I put my life in danger to do it. Now please listen to me. Eat some food and then you'll be strong enough to leave.
00:08:38
Speaker
I won't eat, said Saul. But Saul's men told him to eat too. And at last he said he would eat. He got up from the ground and sat up on the bed.
00:08:52
Speaker
The woman cooked some meat and baked flat bread. She gave it to Saul and his men. They ate. Then they left while it was still night.
00:09:05
Speaker
The day the enemy won. 1 Samuel chapter 31 and 2 Samuel 4 verse 4.
00:09:15
Speaker
The enemy army began fighting God's people and God's people began running away. Many of them died on Gilboa mountain. The enemies pushed on to get to Saul and his sons.
00:09:28
Speaker
They killed Saul's son, Jonathan. They killed two other sons also. There was a lot of fighting around Saul. Men with bows and arrows shot him.
00:09:40
Speaker
He was hurt badly. Saul called to the man who carried his armor. Kill me with your sword. If you don't, the enemies will hurt me more.
00:09:53
Speaker
But the man was scared. He wouldn't kill Saul. So Saul decided to fall on his own sword. And he died. When the man saw this, he decided to fall on his sword too.
00:10:08
Speaker
And he died with Saul. So Saul, his sons, and his men died that same way in that same day.
00:10:21
Speaker
God's people saw that their army had run away, and they saw that Saul and his sons were dead. So they left their towns and ran away too. Then the enemies came and lived in their towns.
00:10:34
Speaker
The next day the enemies came to Geboah mountain. They came to take clothes and things from the dead people. There they found Saul and his sons.
00:10:45
Speaker
They cut off Saul's head and they took off his armor. Then they took Saul's armor to their idol's worship house.
00:10:54
Speaker
Saul's son Jonathan had a son who was five years old. His name was Mephibosheth. The news came that Jonathan and Saul had been killed.
00:11:05
Speaker
So the woman who took care of the boy picked him up and ran. But she was in such a hurry that she dropped the boy. He fell and hurt his feet very badly. And from then on, he couldn't walk.
00:11:21
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:27
Speaker
This was a very serious reading today, as I mentioned before we started.
00:11:35
Speaker
God had taken his kingdom away because he had not obeyed God when he was commanded to kill and remove all of the Malachite people.
00:11:47
Speaker
He did not do it. He was told by God not to take anything that belonged to the people. and he was told to kill all of the people but he didn't instead he brought the king back alive and he allowed his men to take the best of what was there because he was supposedly going to offer it to god So Saul did not honor God and he did not obey God.
00:12:13
Speaker
And Samuel told him from that day that he was going to not be king and his sons would not be king and that the kingdom would be taken away from him and would be given to somebody else.
00:12:27
Speaker
Not long after that, God told Saul that king that David was to be king. And he sent Saul, Samuel, sorry, God sent Samuel to meet David, who was Jesse's son.
00:12:43
Speaker
And he pointed out David to Samuel. And David was to be the next king. It took a long time for David to become king. But he waited for God's perfect timing.
00:12:56
Speaker
And even though he had opportunities to kill the king, he knew it was not his place to remove the king that God had kept in position at that time.
00:13:07
Speaker
So David had faithfully waited for God's timing. And he said that Saul would end up dying either in battle or ah by God's own hand of old age.
00:13:21
Speaker
And here we see that Saul did die in battle. He died at the last battle there on Geboah Mountain. So we see that David had waited patiently for this time, and he honored God's timing, and he obeyed.
00:13:38
Speaker
We see today that Saul was continually doing wrong things. We've read that witches are bad. They are not to do what they do to talk to dead people.
00:13:53
Speaker
And Saul knew that God had not answered him. And so he wanted what he wanted very badly because he wanted to know what the outcome of the battle was going to be.
00:14:07
Speaker
And then when God didn't answer him, he sought what he wanted another way by further disobeying God and going to see a witch, a witch who was in hiding and was living among them.
00:14:22
Speaker
Because it was not that far. He was able to travel in one night to go see the woman. And then he spared her because she did what he wanted.
00:14:34
Speaker
That was a tough one today, huh? That was very serious. Saul did a lot of disobedient things and he was not honoring to God. But our takeaway today is a couple of things for our daily application.
00:14:47
Speaker
One, that God's timing is perfect. And we've talked about that in the past in some of our readings, that God's timing will happen as he sees fit for the different events.
00:15:00
Speaker
And for this, this was the time that Saul was to die. And we are waiting also for things to happen. David had to wait a long time to be king.
00:15:13
Speaker
and he's going to be 30 before he is king. Although he was a young man before he got to be king and he was told he was going to be king, he had to wait quite a while.
00:15:24
Speaker
And he didn't just wait, he was running for his life. We may not be running for our lives, but we are waiting also for God's perfect timing for many things. And when we are tempted to try to do things in the wrong way, we want to remember that God does not appreciate that.
00:15:43
Speaker
and He keeps His word. Right now, we are also waiting for things like the events in Revelation to happen. And so they will happen in God's timing, and things have to happen in the order that He wants them to happen in.
00:15:57
Speaker
And no amount of rushing it or trying to get our own way is going to make things happen. And it can be hard to be patient when we are waiting for God's timing. We are not ah people who live forever here on earth, and God is forever.
00:16:14
Speaker
he always has been and he always will be. And so he understands time in ways that we simply don't. And so while we may be impatient thinking things need to happen right now, and we want things to happen the way we want them to happen, God is the one who knows how everything should happen.
00:16:32
Speaker
Whereas we just know how we want things that we want to have happen. And so our ways are not his ways.

Patience, Right and Wrong, and Sharing the Word

00:16:40
Speaker
And that is our takeaway for today, is that we need to try to be patient as David was patient, which I know can be very hard.
00:16:47
Speaker
It can definitely be super hard to be patient, but that's what we need to do. And we shouldn't try to do things in the wrong way. Even today, There are people who are witches and there are people who try to talk to people who are dead.
00:17:05
Speaker
And we need to avoid those things. Those things are not good. They are what God considers evil. And just as people seek them out today, sometimes they go by the name of a psychic when they're looking for their future to be known and that they want to know what will happen.
00:17:23
Speaker
It is for God to tell us. If God provides a revelation or speaks to us and tells us something that will happen, then that is for God to tell us. It is not for us to go seeking this information from other people who are doing things in the wrong way.
00:17:39
Speaker
Because those things God told us in the very beginning of our readings is that they are detestable to him. They are very bad to him. He does not want us to do those things.
00:17:51
Speaker
So if we are tempted to play a game such as that Ouija board game, to try to talk to spirits or try to find out information about our future, it is only God who is to give us information about our future.
00:18:06
Speaker
If he decides to give that to us or any other information, like when he prophes when he gives somebody prophecy to tell what's going to happen, that is from him.
00:18:18
Speaker
And that is okay because it comes from God. And he chooses to give information to people he chooses to give information to. And if God doesn't give it, we should not go seeking it.
00:18:31
Speaker
So that was a very serious reading and a very serious application for us today. And we have a lot of examples where we have storybooks about witches and like that, and they are not okay because they make it seem like these things are okay and they are good and they are fine. And as long as you're doing things the right way, and that is not what God teaches us.
00:18:53
Speaker
God says that these things are not good. And so when we have these things in our society um that make them seem like, you know, just cartoons or storybooks and stuff like that, they are little ways that that the enemy is trying to draw us away from God.
00:19:12
Speaker
Because if we start to think, oh, it's okay here, then it's okay there. and And then it's just like when um Samson was... ah doing things that would tempt him into sin.
00:19:25
Speaker
It is drawing us into areas where we may be tempted to sin because we have been seeing these things as being okay and being all right to do when they are not okay.
00:19:38
Speaker
They are not okay to God. And if they're not okay to God, then they're not okay for us to do. There's no gray area there. It's right and it's wrong. And that's something in our society that that is becoming less less favorable.
00:19:53
Speaker
The society wants us to see everything as being okay and there's a right path for everybody and you you might not be right for you, but it'd be right for somebody else. And that's not what God says. God says that it is wrong for everybody because it is wrong in his eyes.
00:20:09
Speaker
And sin is still sin. all the time. It's not only sin sometimes.
00:20:16
Speaker
And we have to remember that.
00:20:19
Speaker
So I hope that you're not discouraged by our heavy reading today. It was a very serious lesson today in in our reading with Saul. But thank you very much for joining me in our daily reading today.
00:20:30
Speaker
Whether you have been here and been watching on a video or listening, I appreciate you being here. And if you have the ability to ah click that light button and you feel that God has lit your light today, then please click that light, which it looks like a heart or it might look like a thumbs up.
00:20:49
Speaker
But together, it's actually a light button, and we are showing our light into the world. Jesus is showing his light through us, and we are lighting up the world to tell everybody about this event so we can get it a little bit of attention with more likes and more views.
00:21:03
Speaker
And if you know somebody who would be enjoying who would be interested in enjoying these readings, please share it with them. And let's help spread the word about reading God's word. I hope everybody has a great rest of their Monday, and I'll see everybody again tomorrow.
