Today we will continue reading Paul's letter to the Philippians with Chapters 2 and 3.

Today we will read about why it is important to choose to do what Jesus wants us to do rather than doing what WE want to do in life.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about "Big Picture Thinking" vs "small picture thinking." God's plan for all of us a very big picture. We cannot see all of it, just like Abraham could not see God's promise happen when God promised to give him more children than there were stars in the sky. But God is fulfilling that promise to Abraham every time someone comes to faith in Jesus, including YOU! We have been learning that when we grow individually it benefits the ENTIRE body of Jesus. That is an example of God's big picture. In the same way, our choices to obey God have a greater impact in the world and on the Body of Believers than we can possibly imagine, just like Abraham could have never imagined how God would fulfill His promise to him. Besides this, Jesus has more than earned the right to be made the greatest. He came down to earth to become a servant in the likeness of a human man and obeyed God to the point of dying, ALL SO WE COULD BE SAVED FROM OUR SINS. If anyone knows and understands the "Big Picture" of God's plans it is Jesus.  As a result of Jesus' obedience and sacrifice He has been been given the honor that EVERYONE will bow to Him and  say that He is Lord. For these reasons (and many more!) we need to choose to do what Jesus wants us to do in life rather than choosing to do what WE want to do. It may not be easy, BUT IT IS WORTH IT for the big picture!

Introduction and Gratitude

00:00:03
Speaker
Well, there you are. It's so good to see you again. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching, and I am here for our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17
Speaker
I am so glad that you are following along with me, whether you are listening on your podcast or whether you are watching the video somewhere. Thank you for joining me. I am glad that you have been here for as long as you have been here, whether it is just last week or whether you have been following along for the entire year.
00:00:37
Speaker
I am just so blessed that you have been here with me for this journey.

Accountability Tools for Bible Reading

00:00:41
Speaker
It helps keep me accountable. And if you are using your accountability calendar, it's time to get that out. It's time to get your sticker ready or your marker or your pen, your pencil, your crayon, whatever you're using to mark off those days.
00:00:58
Speaker
Because we're going to hear the Bible today.

Year-End Encouragement and New Beginnings

00:01:04
Speaker
November twenty nine Woo, today is November 29th. I can't remember if I said that earlier or not, but this is the daily reading for November 29th, and we are almost done with this month. That is just so exciting. Every day we get closer to finishing this month, and we have only 32 more days, I think, after this, and then we will be completely finished reading all of this. Look at that.
00:01:34
Speaker
We are almost done. We have been reading this entire Bible all year long. If you have not been reading it all year long with us, then go ahead and feel free to pick up again on January 1st. It's right around the corner. Only about 31 more days, more days.
00:01:55
Speaker
And if you've already listened to it in some some months before, you can always go back and hit all the ones you missed.

Philippians Reading: Jesus as Priority

00:02:04
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be reading in Philippians, which is a letter that Paul wrote to the people living in Philippi.
00:02:11
Speaker
And we're going to be covering chapters two and three. And today, our big picture is going to be about who is the most important one in your life.
00:02:24
Speaker
Paul is going to be talking about how we need to be considering what Jesus wants, more so than what we consider what we want. And he's going to show us that he's a little bit frustrated because he says that it seems like most people just don't do that, that they are following what they want to do.
00:02:42
Speaker
They are loving the world. We're going to see why it's important to make Jesus the most important ones in our lives today. So let's get

Teachings on Unity and Humility

00:02:55
Speaker
ready. I am going to be incorporating some of our big Bible today because I want to be sure we hit some of the most important details.
00:03:02
Speaker
I think some of them are very important for our big picture today. So starting in chapter 1 at the very end, leaving off, Paul tells us yesterday, he says that you will work together as if you were one person and you won't be afraid of anyone who works against you.
00:03:25
Speaker
Now, going back to chapter 2, says, therefore if there is any encouragement in messiah if there is any comfort of love if there is any fellowship of the spirit if there is any mercy and compassion then make my joy complete by being of the same mind having the same love united in spirit with one purpose.
00:03:58
Speaker
I love the verses about unity. Don't do anything just to get something you want. Don't do anything because you feel that you are better than other people.
00:04:09
Speaker
Instead, look at other people as being better than you. And you shouldn't think only about what matters to you. You should also think about what matters to others.
00:04:24
Speaker
You should look at things the same way that Jesus does. He was God, but he didn't hold on to being God. He made himself into nothing.
00:04:37
Speaker
He became a servant. He became a human. He looked like a man. And he put himself in a low place.
00:04:49
Speaker
He obeyed. And he died on a cross. So God made him great and God gave him the highest place.
00:05:02
Speaker
God gave him a name greater than all other names. And all people will bow down when they hear Jesus's name.
00:05:14
Speaker
every Everyone in heaven will bow. Everyone on earth and under the earth will bow. every voice will say that Jesus, the Messiah, is Lord.
00:05:30
Speaker
And this will show that God the Father is great.

Living as Shining Examples

00:05:35
Speaker
Don't you love how showing and bowing down to Jesus shows how great God is?
00:05:42
Speaker
Because God is the one who gave all of that to happen. Without God doing that, that wouldn't have happened for us.
00:05:54
Speaker
My dear friends, you have always obeyed. And you obeyed while I was with you. And now that I'm gone, you still obey. So keep working out your lives and keep looking up to God because he is saving you.
00:06:12
Speaker
if God is working in you to help you think and act right. And he is helping you fit into his good plans. So do everything without fussing and fighting.
00:06:27
Speaker
Then you can be sinless and clean. And you will be without sin in a bent and needy world. Then you will shine like stars in the sky. And you will shine because you show that God's word and talk about God and that you you show God's word and you talk about it.

Strength and Joy in Faith

00:06:54
Speaker
God's word brings life. Jesus will come back and then I can say that I did my work well. And I won't need to say it was for no reason.
00:07:09
Speaker
You are giving and serving because of your faith. And I may need to give up my life. And it will be like pouring a drink for God.
00:07:21
Speaker
I am happy along with all of you. So you should be happy along with me.
00:07:30
Speaker
And I want to hear news about you. That will cheer me up. So I hope that I can send Timothy to you soon. I don't have anybody else like Timothy.
00:07:41
Speaker
He really cares about you. And it seems like people only look for what they want. They don't care about what Jesus wants.
00:07:52
Speaker
But Timothy shows that he is a good man. He worked with me to tell the good news. and he worked like a son would work with his father.
00:08:06
Speaker
So first I will see what's going to happen to me here, and I'm sure that I can come and see you soon. I think I should send Epiproditus back to you.
00:08:18
Speaker
He is like a brother to me. He is a worker and a fighter with me. He is also the one that you sent your message with. You sent him to take care of whatever I needed.
00:08:33
Speaker
But he wants to go back to be with you. And he is upset because you heard about him being sick. He really was sick. He almost died.
00:08:44
Speaker
But God was kind to him. And that was a good thing for me. Because God saved me from being sad.
00:08:55
Speaker
So I do want to send him to you. And when you see him again, you will be glad. And then i won't be so worried. Be glad to welcome him.
00:09:07
Speaker
Look up to people like him. He nearly died for Jesus's work. He was giving me the help that you couldn't give. And that is when he almost gave his life.

Big Picture Faith Focus

00:09:24
Speaker
Finally, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. Show how happy God makes you. It's no trouble for me to write the same things to you over and over, because the words that I write help guard you and keep you safe.
00:09:43
Speaker
Watch out for people who do sinful things. They are like dogs, and they say that we must be like the Jews to be God's children. But we are God's children, and his spirit helps us worship him.
00:10:00
Speaker
It's Jesus who makes us great and strong. And we don't brag about being like Jews. i could brag if I wanted to.
00:10:11
Speaker
I'm a Jew. I'm from Benjamin's family group, and I know the law. I was a leader of the Jews, a Pharisee. And I wanted to do the right thing for God.
00:10:25
Speaker
So I hunted people who believed in Jesus. And I put them in jail. I made sure that I kept every bit of the law. But if good came from that, then it's good for nothing.
00:10:40
Speaker
And I don't mind losing all of that for Jesus. Because nothing is more important than knowing Jesus. Everything else is trash.
00:10:51
Speaker
I want Jesus. And I'm not made right with God by keeping laws. i am right with God because I believe in Jesus.
00:11:03
Speaker
Being made right comes from God. it comes by faith. I want to know Jesus. I want to know his power.
00:11:17
Speaker
It's the same power that brought Jesus back to life again. I want to be his friend and share his troubles. i will even face death like he did.
00:11:29
Speaker
I want somehow to come back to life again. There is a reason that Jesus took hold of me, and I'm going for it.
00:11:40
Speaker
I want what Jesus planned for me. Not that I have already attained this, or have I been perfected, but I press on.
00:11:55
Speaker
If only I might take hold of that which the Messiah took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself as having taken hold of this already, but this one thing I do...
00:12:11
Speaker
is forgetting what is behind and working toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal for the reward of the upward calling of God in Messiah Jesus.
00:12:27
Speaker
Therefore, let all of us who are mature have this attitude.
00:12:35
Speaker
Nevertheless, let us live up to the same standard that we have attained. brothers and sisters, join in following my example and notice those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.
00:12:50
Speaker
I've told you this before. I am sad to have to say it again. Many people live like enemies of Jesus's cross and they're headed toward their death.
00:13:04
Speaker
Their belly is their God. They try to be great by doing dirty and sinful things. And their minds are on the things of the earth.
00:13:16
Speaker
But we belong to heaven. Our big Bible says that our citizenship is in heaven. And we can hardly wait for the one from heaven.
00:13:28
Speaker
Because he will save us. And he is Jesus the Lord. He has the power to control all things. And by his power, he will change the bodies that we have now.
00:13:43
Speaker
We will have bodies like his body. Shining with greatness. And that is the end of our very exciting reading today.
00:13:58
Speaker
Paul gives us a lot about why we need to make Jesus the most important one in our lives. We need to be thinking not about what matters for us, things that are only interesting to us, but we need to think about what matters to Jesus.
00:14:18
Speaker
And why do we want to do that? Because everyone will bow to him. Because he is so amazing and great and wonderful. Because he chose to leave being God and come down to earth.
00:14:34
Speaker
to be made into a human in the likeness of a man and chose to be obedient to God, even all the way to death, when he knew that that death wasn't just going to be quick and painless, but it was going to be drawn out, a death on the cross.
00:14:54
Speaker
And because he obeyed and he went through everything he needed to go through in order to save us from our sins, God has raised him up to be the highest in heaven.
00:15:06
Speaker
And at the sound of his name, everyone is going to bow. Our big Bible says that every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord of all.
00:15:23
Speaker
And so we need to make what matters to him important because he is the most important one of all.
00:15:34
Speaker
And it's so important to know him that it's like knowing everything else is just nothing. It's just trash. And what's interesting is my Bible version explains that when he says trash, that the literal word is actually excrement.
00:15:54
Speaker
meaning it's just waste. It's waste from the body. Everything else we could possibly know is just waste. What matters is knowing Jesus.
00:16:08
Speaker
We call that looking at the big game, the long game, the big picture. And that's what we have been learning this year in our reading, is that we've been learning how to read the Bible and understand not just all of the little details that Paul gives us and that the whole Bible gives us, but that we are understanding the big picture.
00:16:32
Speaker
When we do things that matter to us, that is small picture. That is looking very narrowly because what we want is not going to last forever.
00:16:44
Speaker
That is living in the world. And we, however, belong to heaven. And it might not feel that way. It might not seem that way because we are not there yet.
00:16:56
Speaker
But we know that because we believe we are connected with God's spirit, because he gave us that spirit as a down payment, as a deposit, as a sign of his promise to us that we would one day be with him in heaven.
00:17:13
Speaker
So that's the big picture. And Paul says that he is not yet attained that everything that God has given him to do. He has not been perfected, but he's not going to give up.
00:17:26
Speaker
He's going for the long race. It's a race that is so long. It's like we can't even ever see the finish line. It's a marathon. It's like running 24 mile marathon. You can't see the end.
00:17:42
Speaker
You can't see the finish line. You just have to keep going and going and going and going because it's a marathon. It's a big picture.
00:17:53
Speaker
It's not a sprint. where From where you stand and start, you can see the end, the finish line. We cannot see our finish line. We just know that it is there.
00:18:05
Speaker
And we are moving, and with our goal, toward maturity, toward growing, to knowing that what matters is what Jesus wants. Because Jesus is big picture thinking.
00:18:20
Speaker
Jesus is not little picture, immediate, present thinking. He is thinking about everything, the future. So when we are thinking about what matters to him, what does that look like?
00:18:36
Speaker
That looks like choosing to do the right thing when we know that it is difficult to do. And it might seem like, I'm not going to get anything out of that.
00:18:48
Speaker
Well, we will, just maybe not in that exact moment. The big picture is that what we are doing matters to the whole body of Jesus.
00:19:01
Speaker
Because remember, as we grow individually, we are actually strengthening the entire body. That is more of big picture thinking.
00:19:13
Speaker
We have to be thinking about what benefits the whole body, not just what we want and right then and there and for ourselves. And Paul says that it seems like people are not doing that.
00:19:28
Speaker
It seems like people look only for what they want and they don't care about what Jesus wants. So we need to try and remember to think about what Jesus wants us to do and do that rather than do the easy thing of what we want to do in the moment.
00:19:48
Speaker
We need to remember that there is a bigger picture. And that even if we can't see that big picture, even if we can't see the good that it might have, we need to trust and know that God is working in you to help you think and act right. And he is helping you to fit into his good plans.
00:20:12
Speaker
God's plans are so much bigger than we are. We are only here for a very short time. Even if we live to be a hundred years old, it's still only a very small picture of our whole big picture that God has given us.
00:20:32
Speaker
We can't see it all, but we are a part of it. We need to have faith that when we do the right thing that Jesus wants us to do, that the good and the results of that are so big, we're never going to be able to see it.
00:20:48
Speaker
It's just like Abraham's belief in God. He had faith that God was going to do what he said. God told him he would have more children than there are stars in the sky.
00:21:02
Speaker
And Abraham had no idea how that was going to happen. But guess what? He believed it. And God was true. You and me are children of Abraham.
00:21:17
Speaker
We have been grafted in, adopted, made children because Jesus died for us. So that is the big picture. There is always so much more than we can see within our lifespan.
00:21:31
Speaker
But it's going on. It's there. God is always working good. And he was working to fit everything into his good plans. And God tells us that the plans that he have started he has started, he will carry to completion.
00:21:50
Speaker
And they are not slow as some might think that they are slow. But God is patient, not wanting anyone to die, but he was waiting for more people to come to him. And in his good and perfect time, he will bring everything about just the way he has said he will.
00:22:08
Speaker
And that's the big picture. And it matters that we do our part in that big picture to do what God and Jesus want, because that is the most important thing we can do with our day.

Conclusion: Shine with God's Light

00:22:24
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are encouraged and that you feel educated. You feel like you are equipped. you are You feel taught. You feel fed. You feel like God has lit your light.
00:22:39
Speaker
And in fact, we read today, and we do want to include, he says Paul says that when we do these things, we will shine like stars in the sky. We will shine because we show God's word and talk about it.
00:22:54
Speaker
Because God's word brings life. So I pray that you are shining. with God's light in you today after hearing his word.
00:23:07
Speaker
