Today we will begin reading the second letter from Peter: 2 Peter Chapter 1:1, 3-12 and Chapter 2:1-7, 9-22.

Today we will read and discuss remembering to continually grow spiritually so that we do not return to sinful behavior, either on our own or at the leading away by false teachers, and be like an animal that returns to what it has thrown up and eats it again. Instead, we need to remember that we know Jesus and be strong in our faith so that we not only continue growing but are able to do the good things that God has planned for us, which are important!

Introduction and Bible Reading Setup

00:00:02
Speaker
Good day everybody! May grace and shalom be multiplied to you, the listener, in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
00:00:15
Speaker
Today is December 10th. Welcome to our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. My name is Robin. I'm with In the Family Way Coaching and it is my pleasure and privilege to bring to you our daily reading today.
00:00:31
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me, whether you are following along on your podcast or whether you are watching the video somewhere. Thank you so much for being here. And if you are following along on your bookmarking commitment calendar, it's time to get it out. It's time to get out your sticker, your crayon, your pencil, your pen, your marker, whatever it is you're using to cross off those dates.
00:00:54
Speaker
Because we're going to hear the Bible today.
00:00:59
Speaker
We are going to be starting so Peter's second letter to ah the Gentile and Jewish

Spiritual Growth and Virtues

00:01:07
Speaker
readers. And we are going to be reading about today when the importance in the order of spiritual growth and what it means for us if we decide to turn back away from our faith and revert to previous behaviors.
00:01:25
Speaker
We're going to be looking at what that does for us. And it's not good. So today, we are let's pick up and go ahead and get started right away because I have to get to work today.
00:01:40
Speaker
I'm going to try to get this posted before I get out to work today. but but i have not been getting that out. I've been getting it recorded before I get out to work the last couple of days, but I haven't had time to upload it and get it distributed. So today, i am trying really hard to get this out so that you can actually hear it during the daytime.
00:01:58
Speaker
ah
00:02:02
Speaker
Starting in chapter 1 of 2 Peter, our version says that sometime later, Peter wrote another letter to Jesus' followers. And this is how it begins. I actually began our day today with the greeting that Peter gives in our big Bible version.
00:02:21
Speaker
And our little version says, To people who know how special faith is, I know you that you know how special faith is. I love the way Karen Henley puts that. That is wonderful.
00:02:36
Speaker
Jesus's godly power gave us all we need to live. It gave us all we need to grow to be like God. And we know God.
00:02:48
Speaker
He showed us how great and good he is. And he called us to come to him. God gave us great promises.
00:02:58
Speaker
They are very special. So you can live as a child of God. You can get away from the rotting world. The world is rotting away because people want what is wrong.
00:03:13
Speaker
So try your best to add goodness to your faith. Then add knowing God's ways. Then add self-control.
00:03:24
Speaker
Then a obeying God no matter what. Then and growing to be like God. Then at being kind to God's people.
00:03:38
Speaker
And then add love. Live like this and what you do will be important and you will do lots of good.
00:03:49
Speaker
and that's because you know Jesus. If these things are not in your life, then you cannot see. You can see things only that are right in front of you.
00:04:03
Speaker
You don't see things that are far behind or far ahead. We call that our big picture thinking this year.

Warnings and Teachings of Peter

00:04:12
Speaker
In this year's reading of the Day by Day Kids Bible, we are getting a big picture view of the whole Bible.
00:04:20
Speaker
And it's great to focus on all the many little details, but it is good also to make sure that we can see the whole forest and that we don't lose sight of the forest because of all the trees.
00:04:33
Speaker
So we are learning about the big picture. And Peter is telling us that when we have these things in our life, we can see the whole big picture.
00:04:44
Speaker
We don't just see things that are here and now. We understand that everything we do has bigger effects, has ripple effects, and that it affects everything in the whole body like we have been learning about.
00:05:02
Speaker
And we forget, if we don't have these things, that Jesus has cleaned the sin out of our heart. So keep doing what God wants you to do, and then you will not ever be away from God.
00:05:18
Speaker
He will give you a warm welcome into Jesus' kingdom, and that lasts forever.
00:05:27
Speaker
I will help you remember all of this, even if you already know it. You are already following the truth, but it's all right for me to remind you.
00:05:38
Speaker
I know that I am going to die soon. Jesus has clearly told me that. So I will try my best to remind you of these things. And then after I am gone, you will remember.
00:05:53
Speaker
This letter was written shortly before jesus Peter's execution from Nero in the great persecution. So he knows, like Paul in his final letter, that his days are numbered. He is coming to an end of his time here on earth.
00:06:10
Speaker
Peter wants us to know that we did not make up the stories about how Jesus came. We did not make up the stories about his power.
00:06:22
Speaker
We really did see his kingly greatness. God made Jesus important. God showed how great Jesus is.
00:06:34
Speaker
A voice came from the great king and he said, this is my son. I love him. I am happy with him.

Authenticity and Guidance of Prophets

00:06:46
Speaker
And we were up on the mountain with Jesus. We heard God's voice and it came from heaven. Peter is telling us about the event that we refer to as the transfiguration, where he and i believe ah maybe Matthew was with him.
00:07:08
Speaker
And they were up when Jesus was praying and they had fallen asleep. And when they woke up, Moses and Elijah were there with him. And Peter said, Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let me build tabernacle.
00:07:22
Speaker
a tabernacle to dwell in and Jesus told him no he didn't know what he was talking about but that's the event and Peter ert was told by Jesus at that time not to say anything about that event that had occurred until after everything had happened that was supposed to happen so Peter was faithful to that command and he is telling us about it now And of course, it was also recorded in in the gospel books. But this is Peter giving his own um testimony to the fact that this event was true. He physically heard God's voice telling them that this was his son and in him he was well pleased. So Peter is witnessing
00:08:15
Speaker
We also know what the prophets wrote long ago. And you should think about their words because they are like light shining in a dark place.
00:08:27
Speaker
They will shine until day comes. They will shine until Jesus, who is the morning star, comes back. Now let's pay attention to that, that name, the morning star, because I believe we're going to be reading that in Revelation when we get there as well.
00:08:47
Speaker
When his light, they will shine until Jesus, the morning star, comes back. And then his light will shine in your hearts.
00:08:59
Speaker
Most of all, understand this. None of God's word is a story that has been just made up by prophets.
00:09:11
Speaker
They said what God told them to say, and the Holy Spirit was leading them. Amen. Amen. All scripture is God-breathed.
00:09:25
Speaker
Some prophets were fake prophets, and they lied. And there will be teachers who lie too. And they will teach in secret. They will teach things that will try to tear down your faith.
00:09:38
Speaker
And they will even say that Jesus is not the Lord. They will say that even though he died for them, and they will end up tearing themselves down.
00:09:51
Speaker
Lots of people are going to follow these lies and people will make God's truth sound bad. They will want more and more things. They will trick you with stories that they invent, but they will be blamed for their wrong.
00:10:07
Speaker
Their sin will catch up with them. Some of the angels sinned and God did not save them. He sent them into hell and he put them into dark pits.
00:10:22
Speaker
They will have to stay there until God judges them. Long ago in Noah's time, people turned away from God and God did not save the world then, but he did save Noah and his family. And that's because Noah did what was right.
00:10:43
Speaker
And then there was the time that God burned the city of Sodom because of its sin. God showed what happens to people who turn away from him.

Leaders' Responsibilities and Spiritual Strength

00:10:52
Speaker
But he saved Lot.
00:10:55
Speaker
Lot was a man who did what was right. He was upset by the sins that were going on in Sodom. So God knows how to save godly people from trouble.
00:11:06
Speaker
And he remembers sinful people. He will judge them someday. Even now, they are paying for their sins. This happens most often to people who do only what they want.
00:11:22
Speaker
They won't follow their leaders. They hate for anyone to tell them what to do. They are bold, they are proud braggers, and they're not even afraid to say bad things about heavenly beings.
00:11:38
Speaker
Angels are stronger and they have more power. But even angels do not say such things around God. The teachers who lie, they don't understand what they're talking about.
00:11:54
Speaker
They're like mean animals and they just do whatever they feel like doing. They will get paid back for the bad things that they are doing. Their idea of fun is acting wild while people are watching them.
00:12:09
Speaker
And they might eat with you, but they are like dirty spots. And they enjoy whatever feels good to them at that moment. Their eyes see the wrong that they do, but they never stop sinning. And these teachers will lead others into their sin.
00:12:29
Speaker
They lead those who are not strong in their faith. And they're good at wanting more and more things. They are a group going downhill.
00:12:41
Speaker
They are off the path. Remember, Jesus said that he is the way and the truth and the light. These people are off that path. Jesus said that the path is narrow.
00:12:56
Speaker
They go here and there looking for wrong to do. They're like Balaam. He loved sin, but a donkey talked to him with a man's voice, and the donkey kept him from doing wrong.
00:13:12
Speaker
Teachers who lie are no better than rivers that have dried up. They are like fog that a storm blows around, and the darkest dark is saved for them.
00:13:27
Speaker
They brag and they say things that have no meaning. They try to get you to do what they want. They try to get someone who has stopped sinning to start again.
00:13:40
Speaker
They say that this will make the person free, but they are not free themselves. They are serving sin because a person whose a person serves whatever is his master.
00:13:55
Speaker
Jesus taught us that we cannot love both money and God. We cannot serve both masters. Let's say that people come out of the world sin and they get to know Jesus, but then they get mixed up in sin again.
00:14:11
Speaker
And then they end up in a darker spot than they were in previously. It's darker than they were at first. And it would be better if they had never known what is right.
00:14:23
Speaker
but they did know what was right and they still turned away from it. They still turned away from God. There are some sayings about these people.
00:14:36
Speaker
The first saying says, the dog goes back to where it threw up. And the second saying says, the pig was washed clean, but she went back to roll in the mud.
00:14:50
Speaker
And that, is the end of our reading today.
00:14:57
Speaker
I wanted to remind us about false leaders and leaders in general who have, leaders have a great responsibility. Jesus gave a stern warning to leaders.
00:15:09
Speaker
He said not to turn anyone away from God. He said it would be better for them to have a giant stone tied around their neck and to be thrown into the sea than it is for the leaders to lead even one of God's lambs astray.
00:15:30
Speaker
It is extremely serious for leaders to lead people astray. We are all God's sheep. Leaders are in a position of being a shepherd.
00:15:42
Speaker
They are under a lot of responsibility to ensure that if they lead people astray, there will be big consequences for them. Peter tells us that they that their punishment will be the darkest dark.
00:15:58
Speaker
So we are learning about today, false leaders who drag people away from their faith. And we have a responsibility not to be turned away.
00:16:09
Speaker
We need to be strong in our faith because it would be better for us to have never known Jesus than to know Jesus and then to turn away from him.
00:16:21
Speaker
It's as though we were like a dog who goes back to the place where it throws up. Now that's kind of an incomplete thought because it doesn't tell us what the dog does once it goes back to that throw up.
00:16:34
Speaker
The dog re-eats it. Cats will do it too. You ever have a dog or a cat and they throw something up, they go back to the place where they threw it up a few minutes ago and they're trying to clean it up and they eat it.
00:16:47
Speaker
And it's the same thing. We are going back to what we got rid of. We got rid of our sin and we are going right back to it and gobbling it back up again. In order to avoid doing that,
00:17:01
Speaker
We need to keep growing spiritually. Never stop growing spiritually. Peter tells us to add goodness to our faith. After we have goodness, add knowing God's ways.
00:17:16
Speaker
God's ways are higher than our ways. God says that he delights in those who know him. So if we know him, then we know his ways.
00:17:28
Speaker
When we know God's ways, then we add self-control, meaning that we choose to do God's ways rather than our own ways. It's not enough to simply know God's ways.
00:17:41
Speaker
We have to act like we know them. We have to deliberately choose, and that takes self-control.
00:17:50
Speaker
Then we add obeying God no matter what. When we have that self-control, we are choosing to obey God and obey God's ways rather than doing what we want in the moment.
00:18:05
Speaker
And it's hard. That's why it's called self-control. But guess what? That is a fruit of the Spirit. So we can pray for the Spirit to help us with that.
00:18:18
Speaker
Then we add growing to be like God. When we are growing to be like God, we are doing things like God rather than the way we want to do them.
00:18:30
Speaker
We are always growing spiritually if we do these things. We don't want to shrink. We want to always grow. We won't be perfect.
00:18:42
Speaker
but we are growing in the knowledge and the truth of him. And that is what we prayed for for today for you. And we've been praying for frequently because that is something that the apostles prayed frequently for believers, whether we are new believers or longtime believers, that we may grow in the peace and knowledge and truth of God and of Jesus.
00:19:09
Speaker
Then when we know the truth and we are actively exercising self-control and choosing to obey God and make him the most important one no matter what, our next step is to add being kind to God's people.
00:19:25
Speaker
God says that the true religion is to care for other people, to look out for people who have been married and have lost their spouses. We call those widows or widowers. To look after children who have lost their parents.
00:19:41
Speaker
To care for the needs of others within our spiritual family and those who are not in our spiritual family. Then we are to add love for everybody.
00:19:53
Speaker
Love covers a multitude of sins we learned yesterday. We want to always be loving. Jesus told us that the world will know that we are his followers by our love.
00:20:07
Speaker
So it's kind of like a step-by-step process there, isn't it? And we want to be sure that we are living like this because then when we do, everything we do will be important because it will be living what God wants us to do. It will be doing the good things that he wants us to be do, to be doing rather. ah And that's important because God is the most important one in our lives.
00:20:34
Speaker
And we will do lots of good because we will know Jesus. He is our great motivation. If these things are not in our lives, then we can't see the things in the big picture. We only see right what's in front of us. We only do what we want to do right in that moment, which can be an act of anger where we hurt somebody, either physically or with our words.
00:21:01
Speaker
And we don't want to do that. When we do that, we are forgetting that Jesus has cleaned the sin out of our hearts. We are not maintaining faithfulness.
00:21:12
Speaker
Now we know that we remember all of this. We already know it. We know that we know all of this. This is not new information. But it's good for us to be reminded of this, Peter says.
00:21:24
Speaker
We need to be reminded of it. And that's why it's good for us to always be reading God's word. Because all of God's word is useful for us for teaching, for correction, and for making us capable of doing every good work. It equips us to be ready for all of the great and wonderful things God has ready for us to do every day.
00:21:51
Speaker
Well, I hope that you feel strengthened and that you feel that God has lit your light, that you feel Jesus's light and the Holy Spirit shining through you. i pray that you are feeling empowered and capable to do all the good works that God has ready for you to do to- today. i pray that God will let you know clearly and that you will listen and hear and do whatever God gives you today your good works.
00:22:20
Speaker
And before we go today, before we are finished, I want to encourage you to click our light button to be the light of the world so that we can help spread the word about reading God's word so that we can get this message out to as many people as possible so that they too may be encouraged and we will be able to help our spiritual family grow.
00:22:44
Speaker
We learned this year that when we grow individually, it has the benefit of strengthening all of the whole body. It's like building chains that are stronger and stronger.
00:22:58
Speaker
We've heard the saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. We want to build up all of our spiritual family. And you can help do that by growing stronger yourself and by helping to spread the word about God's word, to encourage the reading of it so that they will also, other people, be encouraged and corrected and strengthened and built up and made capable to do the good works that God has made for them to do.
00:23:27
Speaker
So please click your light button at the end. It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share, a follow, a subscribe. It looks like all of those things. And it helps us to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:23:44
Speaker
So I'm so glad that you were with me today. i hope that you feel like you definitely got a healthy healthy serving of God's word today. i hope that you're hungry again tomorrow and will join us for the next daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:24:00
Speaker
And until we meet again on whatever day you get around to watching or listening, I pray that grace and shalom be multiplied to you. in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
