Today we will begin Paul's letter to the Colossians and read Chapter 1:2-4, 9-10, 12-19, 21-27 and Chapter 2:1-7, 9-15, 18, 20-23.

In our reading today Paul will remind the Colossians of their first love- Jesus! And remind them that he has already done everything needed so that the Colossians are right with God, so there is no reason for them to believe lies about human rules they need to follow in order to please God. Such rules don't do anything to help them avoid sinning.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the freedom from the religious ritual that Jesus gives us. Jesus told the pharisees that they had so many rules that they expected the people to follow that it was like they had taken the key to heaven away from people.  We need to be sure that we are not repeating the same mistake by creating man made rules for believers to follow in an attempt to please God. Jesus taught us that all of God's rules can be summed up by loving God and loving each other.

Paul prayed for the Colossians that God would help them know what He wants. Paul asked God to make their spirits wise so that they could live a life God would be proud of, making God happy in everything they did. That is my prayer for you today, as well.

Introduction to Colossians

00:01:34
Speaker
Today, we are going to begin the book of Colossians, which is actually a letter. And it was written by Paul to the Colossians, and they lived in the city of Colossae or Colossae.
00:01:49
Speaker
And he is going to be writing to them about the difficulties that they are presently facing at that time. And the difficulties that they were having is that people were starting to make up rules. They were starting to turn following Jesus into a mixture of religions.
00:02:12
Speaker
And you know what? That happens with us in today's day and age too. It can be as simple as worshiping angels or placing a great deal of attention on how everybody supposedly has a guardian angel.

Religious Syncretism

00:02:28
Speaker
And we are not meant to worship angels. But this is something that even back in that time, while Paul was still around, that the young church was facing the difficulty.
00:02:40
Speaker
And we also have other difficulties that people try to kind of mix along in thinking it's okay to do both with with our Christianity. And that's things like like um paying attention to like the horoscope, believing in a horoscope that the stars are going to tell our future, using things like a Ouija board. There are different things that are practices that may not be considered part of our religion.
00:03:10
Speaker
but that they are being incorporated as being considered okay to do, and they're not okay to do. And so there are also other things that we can try to incorporate, and we try to make rules. And there are many different things factions, different sects of SECT, not SEX, different divisions of ah believing in Jesus, where there are different rules for how things should be done. And we need to remember that the focus is not on man-made

Faith in Jesus vs. Man-made Rules

00:03:52
Speaker
rules. The focus is on believing in Jesus.
00:03:56
Speaker
And so Paul is going to remind the Colossians today of what we would call their first love. The fact that they are believing in Jesus. And that is the important part.
00:04:09
Speaker
So let's head into Colossians and we're going to be covering the first two chapters. This is a very short letter comparative compared to other letters that Paul has written. And this this letter has only four chapters in it.
00:04:26
Speaker
So Paul writes, from Rome, Paul wrote a letter to Jesus's followers in Colossae. To God's special people in Colossae who keep following Jesus.
00:04:40
Speaker
We pray that God will give you his kind love and peace. And we thank God the Father that you believe in his son, Jesus. And we thank God that you love all of Jesus' followers.
00:04:56
Speaker
We have prayed for you ever since we heard about you. and we ask God to help you to know what he wants. We ask him to make your spirits wise.
00:05:10
Speaker
And then you can live a life God would be proud of. You can make God happy in everything you do. You can be glad to thank God the Father because he has made you good enough to get all that he will give his followers.
00:05:29
Speaker
God saved us from the kingdom of darkness and he brought us into the kingdom of light. It is his son's kingdom. God loves his son, Jesus.
00:05:43
Speaker
And because of Jesus, God forgives our sins. We cannot see God. However, Jesus shows us what God is like.
00:05:55
Speaker
And Jesus is in charge of everything. He made everything in heaven and on earth. He made things that we can see and things that we cannot see.
00:06:08
Speaker
He made kings, powers, rulers, and anyone in charge. Everything was made by him and for him. Now Jesus was around before anything else.
00:06:24
Speaker
Everything holds together because of him. He is like the head of a body. And the body is the church, his followers.
00:06:38
Speaker
Now, Jesus is the beginning. He was the first to die and come back to life that lasts forever. And that makes him greater than all others.

Mystery of Christ in Believers

00:06:51
Speaker
And God was happy to give everything he had to Jesus. And all of God was in Jesus. Now, you were away from God in the past, and it was because of the sinful way that you acted.
00:07:07
Speaker
But now, God has made peace between you and him, and he has made peace by Jesus' death. So now as God sees it, you are clean and sinless.
00:07:22
Speaker
There is nothing wrong between you and God. Amen. Isn't that wonderful news? You are spotless and you will not be blamed for bad things that you have done if you keep on believing.
00:07:41
Speaker
So stay firm and sure and keep the hope that the good news gives you. This good news has been told to everyone. And I, Paul, have been serving God by telling people the good news.
00:07:58
Speaker
Jesus was hurt for you, and I'm glad for you. And I sometimes get hurt for Jesus, too. i also get hurt for his people.
00:08:10
Speaker
They are his church, which is called his body. I serve Jesus' followers, and I serve the church.
00:08:21
Speaker
That is what God told me to do. And he wants me to tell you everything about his word. God wants me to tell about a mystery.
00:08:33
Speaker
It has been hidden for a long time. But now God's people see what the mystery is. And God even shows it to people who are not Jewish.
00:08:45
Speaker
The mystery is that Jesus lives in you. And this is your hope of being part of His greatness.
00:09:00
Speaker
I want you to know something. I work very hard for you. I work hard for people who haven't even met me yet. And I work so that they will feel better in their hearts.
00:09:14
Speaker
I work so they will get together and love each other. and I work so that they can understand All God wants them to know.
00:09:27
Speaker
There are riches hiding in Jesus. And his riches are wise thinking and knowing what is true. And I'm telling you this so that you will not believe lies.
00:09:43
Speaker
Do not believe them no matter how great they sound. My body may not be with you, but my spirit is. And I'm very glad to see that you follow God's plan.
00:09:56
Speaker
And I'm glad that your faith in Jesus is strong. You believed in Jesus, so keep on believing in him. and Be like a plant.
00:10:10
Speaker
Let your roots go deep into Jesus. Be like a tower. Be built up in Jesus. Be strong in your faith.
00:10:22
Speaker
That is what you were taught. So let's thanks let thanks to God flow out of you. All of God lives in Jesus' body.
00:10:35
Speaker
And you have all of Jesus. He is in charge of every power and every ruler. You left sin behind and you were baptized, dipped in water.
00:10:51
Speaker
It was like being put in the grave with Jesus. And after that, you were new and clean. And it was like being brought back to life again. And it happened because you believed in God's power.
00:11:08
Speaker
He is the one who brought Jesus back to life. Sin made you as good as dead. Then God made you alive with Jesus.
00:11:21
Speaker
God forgave all of our sins. The law was against us. It blamed us for our sins. But Jesus took away that blame.
00:11:33
Speaker
It was like nailing the law to the cross. Jesus took away the strength of any evil ruler that would blame you, and he made evil power look bad.
00:11:46
Speaker
He won with the cross.

God's Commandments vs. Human Rules

00:11:51
Speaker
Some people pretend they are not proud, but they really are proud. And some people worship angels instead of God.
00:12:03
Speaker
Do not let them lead you away from Jesus. These people talk a lot about what they see. and they are puffed up with ideas that do not get them anywhere.
00:12:17
Speaker
And it is as if you died with Jesus. You died to the world. So why go by its rules? It says, don't touch this, don't taste that, don't hold on to this.
00:12:35
Speaker
But these are human rules and they will not last forever. They look like wise rules and they tell when and where to worship. They tell people how to work hard with their bodies.
00:12:49
Speaker
But they are not any good at keeping people from sinning.
00:12:56
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:13:03
Speaker
So it can be that that rules are come up with because people want to please God. They want to honor God. But let's go back to the beginning and see what Paul says about that.
00:13:20
Speaker
He says that
00:13:25
Speaker
We ask God to help you know what he wants. And we ask him to make your spirits wise. Because then you can live a life God would be proud of.
00:13:39
Speaker
You can make God happy in everything you do. And that's probably really the goal of people who are trying to make up rules about how they need to go out and and do different things and how they have to work hard and and how they have to do this. And and they make tithing a rule.
00:14:02
Speaker
and tithing is supposed to be something that we do because we choose to do it. God loves a cheerful giver. God does not force us to do anything.
00:14:15
Speaker
He gives us free will. So if our Heavenly Father gives us free will, he does have rules that he likes for us to obey.
00:14:26
Speaker
But we have to choose to do those things because we want to be like him. not human rules. And Jesus told the Pharisees, he said, you are placing more importance on your human rules. They had rules about hand washing. They had rules about how many times they had to hand wash, where they needed to do it, how they couldn't do something unless they had their hands washed. They had all of these different rituals.
00:14:56
Speaker
all of these different rules, so many of them that Jesus said that it was like they had taken the key away from God's kingdom from the people.
00:15:09
Speaker
And that's not what we are supposed to do. Jesus has set us free from sin. So we are free indeed. And so we are supposed to imitate Jesus.
00:15:23
Speaker
Jesus does everything right for the right reasons. Not because there are rules that he has to follow for fear of of getting in trouble.
00:15:35
Speaker
Rules are there, the law was there, and it showed us what to do. And it showed us how we were wrong. But Jesus came and he fulfilled the law.
00:15:48
Speaker
But he said that he did not get rid of the law. He came to fulfill it. And God wrote his rules on our heart.
00:16:00
Speaker
And if we know God, if we love and know God, then we can know what God wants us to do because he has given us his Holy Spirit.
00:16:13
Speaker
And Jesus said that to come to him, all who are heavy burdened, and he would give them rest. Jesus is referring to the many, many rules.
00:16:26
Speaker
It doesn't mean that we have no rules. It means that the rules that we follow are God's rules, not human rules. God's rules help us to not hurt other people.
00:16:40
Speaker
Paul says the difference is that human rules are not any good at keeping people from sinning. They have to do with sinning.
00:16:52
Speaker
what kind of work they're supposed to do and how they have to serve in certain ways and you have to be qualified to do something. And there are also people who believe in worshiping angels and they will put out little pamphlets that you can find at the grocery store. i used to see them at the checkout stand and they talk about how to see your guardian angel or any of that. And we are not meant to worship the angels.
00:17:21
Speaker
Anytime somebody fell down and bowed to an angel, the angel said, do not worship me. They know that it is God that we are supposed to worship.
00:17:33
Speaker
So we want to make sure that we are not falling into the same traps that the Colossians were falling into. They were getting a lot of information from people who were trying to make human rules that they had to obey.
00:17:50
Speaker
or it would make God unhappy. And we don't want to get caught in that trap because Paul says that we have been forgiven for our sins. So we are already right with God.
00:18:03
Speaker
We don't need to try to make up additional rules to try to make God happy.

The Command to Love

00:18:10
Speaker
Jesus told us that all of the law can be summed up into one rule.
00:18:16
Speaker
And that's to love one another besides God. First, we love God. Love God with all your heart, all your might, all your soul. And then love each other. And Jesus says that if we love each other, that is how people will know that we are his followers.
00:18:35
Speaker
He doesn't have 42 pages of lists of of the ways that we have to do everything. We are meant to love God and love one another.
00:18:47
Speaker
So I hope that you feel relieved or and at least at odds with anything that you have been told is a rule that you have to follow in order to please God, a man-made rule.
00:19:02
Speaker
I hope that you feel that any rules that you have been given, that the Holy Spirit is speaking to you and telling you that there's something not right about that rule.
00:19:13
Speaker
And We need to be able to come back and and follow just God's rules and not worry about these human rules that are taking us away from the point of worshiping Jesus.
00:19:29
Speaker
I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. i hope that you feel encouraged. I hope that you feel free because if the sun has set us free, we are free indeed.
00:19:41
Speaker
And god Paul recommends to us that we always have thanks to God flowing from us. So let's be thankful to God that there are not a ton of rules.
00:19:55
Speaker
All of the rules that God has given us can be summed up in love.

Paul's Prayer and Living to Please God

00:20:01
Speaker
And there is a prayer here today that Paul prayed that I would like to pray for us as well. Paul asked says, we ask God to help you know what he wants.
00:20:16
Speaker
So it is my prayer for you today that God would help you to know what it is he does and does not want. So that you can live a life that God would be proud of and that you can make God happy in everything that you do.
00:20:35
Speaker
And I ask this for you in Jesus's name.

Encouragement to Spread the Word

00:20:41
Speaker
I hope you are having a fantastic day and that you will join me again for tomorrow's daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. And i will also ask that you consider clicking that light button because that helps us to spread the word about reading God's word so that we can help encourage people to follow God's rules, not human made rules in an attempt to try to please God.
00:21:11
Speaker
And until you see me again next time, i hope that you are having a blessed day. See you then.
