Audience Acknowledgements

00:01:14
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be picking up and finishing the letter that Paul wrote to Timothy, the second one, with chapters four and five today.
00:01:26
Speaker
And before we get started, i wanted to give a couple of shout outs and say, hello, how are you doing out there? i hope that you have been having a fabulous day. now I wanted to point out my shirt today. It might be a little hard to see in this light, at least for me on my camera,
00:01:44
Speaker
eng It might look like I'm wearing a pajama shirt here in the United States. But this is the shirt that I got from India when I went over there. And so I wore this today ah to show my love for our viewers who are in Nepal.
00:01:59
Speaker
that is somewhat close to India and so their clothing is a little bit similar and I have a green one like this too and I'll wear it in the next couple of days and I wore it to work one time and we have a lady from Nepal there her name is Apshu and as she saw my shirt and she loved it she says oh and she I think she gave me the name for it or something and But it's just, it's a lovely shirt.
00:02:24
Speaker
It is a long sleeve shirt. and it I've had it for so long that it used to be very vibrant pink, but now it is ah faded. ah But I love this shirt. This was one of my very favorite shirts and I wore it forever. And it is so comfortable and soft. And I love how it's got, and the long sleeves are just right for me. i like how it's so...
00:02:48
Speaker
movable i get I'm so comfortable and free in this shirt. And it's just it's just lovely. And it's so beautiful. If you can't see, it has all kinds of intricate design here in the stitching.
00:03:01
Speaker
And it's just incredible here. Try to get a little bit closer for a minute. so that you can see my pretty pattern. And it's just, it's so elegant and i just really love it. And it's been in the back of the closet. I don't wear it that often because it is too long for me to wear to work. It goes down quite long and um I have to wear tank tops most of the time because otherwise I'm just moving and moving and I'm hot. ah ah So, and I'm not out in the sun, so I don't need long sleeves. I'm in a warehouse. ah
00:03:39
Speaker
and So I just wanted to say hello to Ram or Rom. I'm not sure how to pronounce your name. So forgive me for mispronouncing your name and to all of our other brothers and sisters who are joining us in Nepal. And thank you again so much for praying for me over there. oh I just love that. Thank you so much.
00:03:57
Speaker
I also want to say a shout out to Suzanne. Thank you so much for joining us for this daily Bible reading event. Thank you for being here. i would like to welcome anybody who may be listening from work with me.

00:04:44
Speaker

Reading: Paul's Teachings to Timothy

00:04:59
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading one of my very favorite verses.
00:05:04
Speaker
As you know, i am very passionate about spreading the word, about reading God's word. And I have a little bit of wordplay in there too. I'm with spreading the word.
00:05:16
Speaker
God's word is the word about spreading God's word. And i love how all of God's word is so useful. It is all God breathed. And Paul is going to tell us to today in one of my very favorite verses.
00:05:36
Speaker
Let's see here how he has it.
00:05:44
Speaker
Chapter three of second Timothy in verse 16. All scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, that's correction, for restoration, and for training in righteousness, so that the person belonging to God, that's you, you belong to God, may be capable and fully equipped for every good deed.
00:06:19
Speaker
We have been reading about the last couple of days about how God has made good deeds for us to do. We are to be doing good. We are to work hard to do good things, to help bring good things into this world as God works through us.
00:06:38
Speaker
And the Bible, all scripture makes us capable so that we are able to do every good deed. We are fully equipped. And although I've mentioned it a couple of times, you may be newer here and you may not have heard me mention it, that I am just so excited for whatever it is that God is equipping us to be able to do with what he has been teaching us.
00:07:04
Speaker
And I love that every single day has daily application. No matter where you pick up and read in the Bible, if you know how to look at it and read it, and as you're as we're doing this year, to look at the big picture, and sometimes it's looking at the details, but to understand and see ourselves in what we are reading, to see where we need to not do things or where we need to do things, that we can put ourselves right there,
00:07:36
Speaker
and learn the same things and sometimes more because we have an um an overview, a big picture where we can see what the people in in the timeline at the moment are not able to see.
00:07:50
Speaker
And that we can learn how to behave and how to not behave depending on circumstances. And God's word is so useful for all of that.
00:08:01
Speaker
It's useful for reconciliation with God, which is restoration. It also helps us restore relationships between one another. it is so awesome.
00:08:12
Speaker
We could make a whole day just talking about everything that the scripture is useful for. But we're going to get into our reading now. So let's pick up. We are in chapter 3 of 2 Timothy.
00:08:27
Speaker
And Paul says this. Listen. Think about this. Earth's last days will be full of trouble.
00:08:39
Speaker
And people will love themselves. They will love money. They will brag. They will be proud. They will hurt others.
00:08:51
Speaker
And they will not obey their parents. They will not be thankful. Their hearts will be full of sin And they will not love others.
00:09:05
Speaker
They will not forgive each other. They will say bad things about other people. And they will not control themselves. They will be mean.
00:09:17
Speaker
They will not love what is good. and they will trick people. They will do things without thinking. And they will think that they are the best.
00:09:31
Speaker
and they will simply do what feels good in the moment. They won't love God. They will do things to look like they are godly. But they will not believe in God's power.
00:09:45
Speaker
Stay away from them.
00:09:52
Speaker
These people trick their way into homes. And they get control of people who can't say no. Those people are full of sin.
00:10:05
Speaker
They follow whatever bad things they want to do. People who are full of sin are always learning, but they can never say what the truth really is.
00:10:20
Speaker
They fight against the truth. They have dirty minds. People who have faith want nothing to do with them.
00:10:31
Speaker
And those sinful people will not get very far. And others will clearly see how foolish they are.
00:10:41
Speaker
Timothy, you know about my teaching. You know how I live. You know what I live for. And you know how I wait quietly.
00:10:54
Speaker
You know my faith and my love. You know how I keep believing even in hard times. You know how I've been hurt.
00:11:05
Speaker
You know my troubles. You know what happened to me in cities I visited. I was

Discussion on Endurance and Faith

00:11:12
Speaker
hurt, but I kept right on going. And Jesus saved me from all the danger.
00:11:20
Speaker
the fact is that everyone who wants to be godly will get hurt. Sinful people will get more and more sinful.
00:11:32
Speaker
They will lie and they will be lied to. But you, you need to keep following what you have learned. Keep doing the things that you know you should.
00:11:47
Speaker
You have known God's word since you were a baby. and God's word will make you wise. And then you will be saved because you will believe in Jesus.
00:12:02
Speaker
All of God's word is given to us by God. And we can use it for teaching. We can use it to show people what is right and wrong.
00:12:14
Speaker
We can use it to train people how to live. And then God's people can be ready to do good.
00:12:24
Speaker
Teach people carefully, Timothy. One of these days, they will not listen to good teaching, and they'll do whatever they want. They will get their own teachers.
00:12:38
Speaker
And these, quote, teachers will say what the people want to hear, and the people won't listen to the truth, because instead, they will listen to made-up stories.
00:12:52
Speaker
But you, you should use your head to think. And think no matter what happens. And keep going, even when it's hard.
00:13:04
Speaker
And teach the good news. Follow God's plans for your life. I am like a drink that is being given as a gift to God.
00:13:17
Speaker
I am flowing out. And it's time for me to leave now. My life has been like a fight. And I fought well. It's been like a race, and I have finished the race.
00:13:31
Speaker
I kept believing all the way, and now God has a crown of life for me. and it's a crown that shows I am right with him. And Jesus, the judge who does what is right, he will give it to me.
00:13:48
Speaker
And I'm not the only one to have a crown. There's one for everybody who wants Jesus to come back.
00:13:57
Speaker
Timothy, come to see me as soon as you can. Demas, he loved this world and he left me. He went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia and Titus went to Dalmatia.
00:14:12
Speaker
Luke is the only one with me. And bring Mark with you because he can help with the work God wants me to do. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus and I left my coat at Troas, so please bring it with you when you come and bring my writings too.
00:14:30
Speaker
Alexander the metal worker made lots of trouble for me. God will pay him back for what he did, and you need to watch out for him too.
00:14:42
Speaker
He was very much against our message.
00:14:46
Speaker
I have tried to show that I was right. At first, nobody helped me. Everybody left me. I hope God does not hold it against them.
00:14:59
Speaker
But Jesus, he stood beside me, and he made me strong so I could tell the whole message. And that way, all the people who are not Jewish could hear it.
00:15:14
Speaker
God saved me from the lions and he will save me from everything bad that comes to against me. He will bring me safe to heaven, to his kingdom.
00:15:27
Speaker
Let God's greatness shine forever and ever. Yes. Amen.
00:15:36
Speaker
Timothy, say hello to Priscilla and Nechila and to Onesiphorus and his family. Erastus is staying in Corinth. I left Trophimus and Miletus.
00:15:47
Speaker
He was sick. Try to come before winter. Linus, Claudia, and all of God's people here say hello. And I pray that Jesus will be with your spirit.
00:16:01
Speaker
And I pray that his kind love will be with you. From Paul.
00:16:10
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. And the end of our reading from Paul. After this, Paul was martyred. Tradition tells us that he was beheaded, that he was spared from crucifixion because he was a Roman and Romans were exempt from crucifixion.
00:16:30
Speaker
We don't have any actual written account of his martyrdom, but that is ah church stories, church history, how how we are told it happened.
00:16:47
Speaker
So what Paul is telling us today as our daily application is that no matter how bad it gets, we need to a be aware of what is going on.

Warnings Against False Prophets

00:16:59
Speaker
We need to be informed that this is the way it's going to be. It's going to be bad. There is going to be no end to the list of sinful things that people are going to be doing and the ways that they will behave.
00:17:12
Speaker
And yet despite how bad people are going to be, despite the lack of love that Jesus told us there would be, that in the heat Jesus told us that in the end, that less and less people would love, that the love of many would grow cold, is the way he put it.
00:17:34
Speaker
And despite that fact, we need to remember to keep teaching. Remember who we are. Remember the message that we are meant to bring into the world.
00:17:47
Speaker
We know that despite the fact that there will be a lot of sinful people and a lot of sinful behaviors, we also know that the Holy Spirit will be in the world too. And we are the temple of the Holy God.
00:18:00
Speaker
So we will still be here. Maybe not us personally, but us as a church. And so us as a living body of God, We need to remember.
00:18:11
Speaker
Remember how we were taught. Remember the truth. And don't steer away from it. Because there are going to be people who seem like they are believers, but they are not.
00:18:24
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that it is by our fruit that we are known. And that even a child is known by their doings. Those who are bearing good fruit will be the ones that we can trust and see that they are indeed followers of God.
00:18:41
Speaker
And we need to keep firm in the faith, not giving up. It's common now, and it will become even more common, that people will want to talk about supposed godly things, but they are talking in order to Tickle the ears, Paul tells us in our big Bible, meaning that they are just talking.
00:19:05
Speaker
They are not teaching God's truth. They are talking about what people want to hear. They are just saying what people want to hear. And it's just like the prophets, supposed, the false prophets in the old covenant before God exiled all of Jerusalem and Judea.
00:19:27
Speaker
There were false prophets who were telling the people that there was nothing wrong, that there was not going to be any exile. They didn't need to worry. And that was not true.
00:19:39
Speaker
But the people, they wont only listened to the false prophets, and they were not listening to Jeremiah or the other prophets whom God had sent. Instead, they were listening to messages that they wanted to hear, things that made them feel good.
00:19:56
Speaker
They were not actually listening to God's messenger. And we are God's messengers. And the world will be like that in the future.
00:20:07
Speaker
And it's sit like that even now at times. So we need to be aware that this is happening so that we can be on our guard to not fall into those traps and to be protected from them and to not be around those people.
00:20:25
Speaker
Paul says to stay away from these types of people They are not going to benefit us in any way. We need to stay away from them.
00:20:37
Speaker
We are to continue being firm in our faith and teaching the good news. Our goal is to follow God's plans for our life.
00:20:49
Speaker
Remember, we have purpose. We have plans. God has plans for us. We have good works that we are supposed to be doing. And no matter what, we need to keep running that race.
00:21:03
Speaker
Stay firm like Paul. Paul tells us that anybody who follows God is going to have hard times. So just know that when we experience these hard times, we need to stay firm in our faith and keep believing even when things are hard.

Encouragement to Remain Faithful

00:21:22
Speaker
And we need to remember that Jesus is the one who saves us, not the world. the people There were people that Paul mentioned today whom they had stepped away from the faith.
00:21:35
Speaker
They were no longer following God. People can fall away. We want to be sure that we don't become one of those people. We need to keep believing even when times are hard and trust that God has plans.
00:21:50
Speaker
God is working good into everything. We have seen that all throughout the year this year, and we may not be able to see it ourselves, but we need to have faith and know that God is always working.
00:22:04
Speaker
And he is always working good for those who believe in him and who have faith and trust in him. So I hope that you are encouraged.
00:22:15
Speaker
I hope that you feel strong and that you will be strong during whatever trials and and difficult times come your way, whether you are listening to today in 2025 or whether you are finding this event at some time in the future when times have gotten even worse than they are today at the time this was recorded.
00:22:36
Speaker
I pray that you will stand firm in your faith. Paul tells Timothy that he knows that what he was taught. And he needs to keep believing.
00:22:50
Speaker
Don't step away. Like Timothy, don't step away. Let's be strong like Paul, knowing that our so that Jesus has a crown of life for each one of us who believe.
00:23:06
Speaker
Not just for Paul, not just for Timothy, but every one of us. We'll have a crown of life that will be given to us. And we will have eternal life with Jesus.
00:23:19
Speaker
We are looking at the big picture. We are not looking at the small picture where we just do what we want. And when things get hard, we we step back and and get too scared to go on.
00:23:32
Speaker
We need to remember that God is with us and Jesus will make us strong, just like he made Paul strong. And this is why we have the Bible, so that we can remember these things, because all of what we are reading is useful for us for teaching.
00:23:49
Speaker
We can use it to show people what is right and wrong. We can use it to train people how to live, you and me. So everything we are reading, if you ever need encouragement again, head up your Bible, because all of God's Word is useful.
00:24:06
Speaker
It's useful for encouraging and reconciliation and teaching and letting us know how to be right with God. How to do things God's way.
00:24:21
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are just really encouraged to know that you can do it. This is not something that is beyond you. You are capable All of God's word is making us capable to be able to do the good works that God has in mind for us to do.
00:24:41
Speaker
You are capable. You are equipped for every good work. So do it. but Ask God what he has plans, what his plans are for you, and then go out and do it.

Preview of Next Reading: Book of James

00:24:57
Speaker

00:25:20
Speaker
Tomorrow we are going to begin the book of James. And that's exciting to me because James was one of Jesus's brothers. That's amazing.
00:25:33
Speaker
I love that. So join with me tomorrow as we start the book of James. And before we do that, if you don't mind, please clicking your light button so we can help get this event out for people to hear it and see it. It's because we are together spreading the word about reading God's word so that everybody who hears this will have the opportunity to know that God's word is equipping them for every good work that God has in mind for them as well.
00:26:07
Speaker
Well, until we meet again, i hope you have a very blessed day. And I am sure that God will bring opportunities into your life to practice what we have been teaching and reading about.
00:26:20
Speaker
So stay firm when people are rude and difficult and disobedient to God's word. One other thing I do want to be sure we mention before I forget is that Paul said to teach.
00:26:35
Speaker
with patience and with, and to be steadfast, pretty. How did he say that? I don't think it's listed in our small Bible. I'm going to read it out of our big Bible here.
00:26:52
Speaker
Closely follow my teaching manner of life, purpose, faithfulness, patience, love, and perseverance.
00:27:05
Speaker
So may you follow closely Paul's teaching, his manner of life, your purpose with faithfulness, patience, love, and perseverance, no matter what you may encounter in that sinful world we live in.
00:27:26
Speaker
I will see you again next time. Thank you for being here.
