00:00:25
Speaker
I am so excited today. Oh my gosh, today's reading, it it is just, it's it's a feast. In fact, there's so much, we can't we can't use it all for our daily application. We can't talk about all of it, but it is all amazing. If there's anybody better than Paul in his writings, it's Peter, I'm sure.
00:00:47
Speaker
i The whole Bible is just so awesome. It's it's so exciting. There is just so much. it's It's just it it gets right into your spirit and it just brings joy. And that is what I am having today.
00:01:01
Speaker
And God is just so good. And I am just having an amazing day. So I hope that you are also having an amazing day.

Platform Engagement and Language Settings

00:01:10
Speaker
If you are using the bookmarking commitment calendar, go ahead and get that out.
00:01:16
Speaker
Get that sticker ready. Get your bookmark. or Not your bookmark. This is a bookmark. Your pen, your pencil, your crayon. ah Whatever you're using to cross off those days.
00:01:27
Speaker
Because we're going to hear the Bible today.
00:01:32
Speaker
Well, I am... So ready to get going. Before we do, though, I would like to say hello to our newer listeners. If you are a new subscriber, thank you so much for joining us. I'm so glad that you found us. I'm so glad that you are hearing God's word and that somebody somehow, maybe it was YouTube, popped it up on your feed. And that's because people are clicking that light button that it showed up for you. I'm so glad that you are joining us to so help us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:02:08
Speaker
I often speak directly to our viewers or listeners on the YouTube Avenue. And we do have ah listeners there on Apple Music and however else that is connected, such as by, let's see, there's Podbean. That's its own separate website. ah Spotify and iHeartRadio and Pandora and... um They're, of course, on YouTube and YouTube Music. But I usually speak to the people on YouTube and YouTube Music because that's where I have the greatest interaction. That's where we have some comments periodically on the audio version. And that's where I see the greatest growth is on subscribers here on YouTube or YouTube audio, YouTube Music.
00:02:55
Speaker
So I'm not neglecting you guys there on the Apple Music. um I don't have any connection there. i I do see that you're there and that you are listening. So thank you so much for joining us. But I see the greatest amount of growth ah through YouTube. So I want to say welcome if you are watching or listening YouTube or YouTube audio, YouTube music.
00:03:18
Speaker
And I am so glad that you are being led here. If you are unaware, there should be this event available now for in the settings to hear it in Spanish. Now, what's interesting is I was ah for a couple of days, maybe a week or two, the settings when I'm posting the video will give me the option to manually review the autodubbing or to not. I don't have any way to manually review Spanish and French and Dutch and German and Hindi and Polish. I don't have any way to manually review that first. So I've just been unclicking the manual review. But now I'm not even seeing that popping up. So I'm not sure if that means that this was a trial and it's no longer available for you in Spanish or in other languages.
00:04:10
Speaker
So if somebody could let me know, ah that would be helpful. ah because I'm not seeing it on my side, but I was never able to see where the setting was for that, for me personally. I know in the past I've come across ah videos that were in Spanish and I was able to get English subtitles, but not AI dubbing for English.
00:04:32
Speaker
So I'm wondering if it is still available. I'm still putting that in the description though, because probably by the time this go goes, gets around, you know, maybe by next year and whatnot, then it will definitely be available. But as far as 2025, I'm not seeing it as I post it anymore. So I just wanted to point that out.

Peter's Teachings on Endurance

00:04:54
Speaker
yeah Well, we are going to begin here with 1 Peter chapters 2 and 3 today. And today, Peter is going to be talking with us about the importance of enduring when someone or people, when people are treating us poorly,
00:05:16
Speaker
despite the fact that we are not treating them poorly you may remember that ah jesus taught us to pray for our enemies to pray for those who hate us he says if you only love those who love you then you're not really being any different from the rest of the world because even the pagans love one another but We are supposed to love everybody and to show that. And even when people are being unkind to us, the biggest example of that that Peter will give us today is that Jesus
00:05:52
Speaker
was treated very badly when he was going through his trial. And he told us, if people hate you, they hated me first. And when they hate you, they're really hating me.
00:06:06
Speaker
And so Jesus endured it. Although people were hitting him and calling him names and spitting in his face, he did not retaliate. He did not give snotty answers or even justified answers back. He didn't return it. Instead, Jesus teaches us to turn the other cheek. And man, I don't know about you, but that can be really wearing down. it really wears you down. it can be very hard, especially if you are enduring this. Day after day after day after day.
00:06:40
Speaker
And this is part of the ah building of our faith that we need to still continue to do the right thing by not returning evil for evil. Because, man, it is so frustrating when somebody is constantly treating you poorly, despite how kind you are to them.
00:06:59
Speaker
You just get tired of it. You just want to tell them to you know how you know to shut up, to be stop doing this. And you want to ah respond because you're hurt.
00:07:12
Speaker
And so ah Peter's going to be talking about that with us today and letting us know that It's hard, but we need to keep enduring it if that is God's will for us to be experiencing these things.
00:07:26
Speaker
So how could it be God's will for us to experience mean behavior? We have to experience the things that Jesus experienced in order to be able to practice what he did.
00:07:42
Speaker
Wow, that's tough, isn't it? So for me, for instance, Every day, my daughter is so rude. She is so mean. And I have every right to expect her to treat me with respect.
00:07:58
Speaker
And it doesn't matter if I offer her, like this morning, um I made quiche. And I said, hey, there's quiche up there if you would like some help yourself. And instead of saying no thank you no,
00:08:09
Speaker
I appreciate the offer or no, I don't want any. It's always snotty answer, no matter what. I don't eat egg. I can't eat it Well, she changes her mind all the time, what she can and can't i eat. She uses the word, I can't eat it, or I don't like it if she doesn't want something. Instead of just saying, no, thank you.
00:08:28
Speaker
That's nice of you to offer. i don't ever get a kind word. So I live this every single day. it is exhausting. very exhausting.
00:08:41
Speaker
And yet God has told me that he doesn't want me to move her out. I have to endure this. So... to- Today's reading really speaks to my heart. And I know that I'm not the only one who who goes through these types of difficult situations. It could be someone one you are dealing with at work.
00:09:03
Speaker
It could be someone one you are dealing with at school. It can be a family member, a brother or sister, a spouse. Whatever it is, we are called to do good, that other people may see our good deeds.
00:09:19
Speaker
And eventually God will be praised for that. So that is our frame of reference as we head into today's reading.

Living Righteously and Submitting to Authority

00:09:29
Speaker
Before we get to that, Peter will ah give us some other ah great information. and He doesn't head right into that, but we will get into it soon. and Leaving off from yesterday, Peter tells us, It's like you've been born again.
00:09:47
Speaker
You haven't been born into a family that dies. You have been born again into a family that never dies. God's word lives and lasts forever.
00:10:00
Speaker
Isaiah said it this way, God's word stays fresh forever. I like that. So today's reading begins with that in mind.
00:10:12
Speaker
So get rid of hate. Our big Bible uses the word malice, which means to want to intentionally do harm to somebody. Get rid of lies.
00:10:23
Speaker
Stop saying one thing and then doing something different. We call that hypocrisy. Stop wanting to be like other people and stop saying bad things about people.
00:10:37
Speaker
You have seen how good God is, so be like a baby that's just been born, and then you can grow up in God's kingdom. Come to Jesus.
00:10:49
Speaker
People didn't want him, but God chose him. And Jesus is important to God. Isaiah says it this way. See, i am putting a stone down in my land.
00:11:05
Speaker
It's a stone I chose. It's an important stone. It holds the walls together at corners. And whoever trusts in him will never have to feel bad.
00:11:20
Speaker
You believe in Jesus, and he is important to you. But what about people who don't believe? The Psalm puts it like this.
00:11:32
Speaker
The builders did not want the stone, but this stone is now the most important stone. And that is Jesus.
00:11:44
Speaker
And you, you are like stones that are alive too, because God is building you into a house and it's a spiritual house.
00:11:56
Speaker
God wants you to serve him like priests. You can give spiritual gifts to God. God chose you. Remember a moment ago, we just read that God chose Jesus.
00:12:10
Speaker
God also chose you. We are chosen. That is the opposite of rejected. We are not rejected.
00:12:21
Speaker
We are chosen. You are like the king's priests. You are a nation of people with no sins.
00:12:32
Speaker
And you belong to God. So you can praise him. He brought you out of the dark and he led you into his wonderful light.
00:12:44
Speaker
In the past, you were not God's people. Peter is referring to the Gentiles here. But now you are. And in the past, you didn't have his kind love.
00:12:58
Speaker
But now you do. And you are my dear friends. You don't belong to this world. So I beg you to stay away from sinful things.
00:13:12
Speaker
They fight against your soul. Live good lives. And then people who do not believe will see the good you do. Let every leader you have lead you.
00:13:27
Speaker
There is a reason they are leaders. And it's so they can get rid of sinful people. They can speak up for good people.
00:13:39
Speaker
I'm going to read that out of our big Bible as well. For the Lord's sake, submit yourself to every human authority whether to a king as a supreme or to governors sent by him for the punishment of those who do evil and the praise of those who do good.
00:13:59
Speaker
For this is God's will, that you silence the ignorance of foolish men by doing good. Live as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil.
00:14:16
Speaker
Rather, live as God's slaves and honor all people. Love the brotherhood, fear God, and honor the king.
00:14:30
Speaker
Notice that we are doing this for the Lord's sake.
00:14:35
Speaker
So if you are a servant, obey your master. And don't just obey masters who are good and kind. Obey masters who are hard on you too. Remember, as we are reading, that whenever we have mentioned or spoken about a relationship such as slave and master, this can very easily be translated into today as anyone who is in authority over you. We may not have physical masters and may not be physical slaves.
00:15:07
Speaker
However, we are meant to be slaves to Jesus in obedience, and we are choosing to obey anyone in authority, such as a boss, a parent, whoever is it above us, a government leader, an older sibling who is in charge.
00:15:26
Speaker
There will always be someone, a group leader, When we are doing something in a group, there will always be somebody who is in charge at some point over us. And sometimes we may be the leader, so we have to be mindful of that as well.
00:15:42
Speaker
But in this situation he is describing, he is saying to not just obey people who are good and kind, obey people who are hard on you too. We all have to deal at some point with that boss who is a jerk.
00:15:57
Speaker
There's just no other way to say it. They are unkind. They are rude. They are demanding. that They are just difficult to deal with. Obey them anyways. And don't just do it because we have to, but do it with sincerity of heart.
00:16:15
Speaker
Let's say you haven't done anything wrong, Peter writes. It's still good to deal with the pain of hard times. And hard times are good if you are thinking about what God wants.
00:16:28
Speaker
Let's say that your master beats you for doing something wrong, and that makes you look like a bad person, even if you deal with it and accept your punishment. You look bad because you did something wrong.
00:16:41
Speaker
But let's say that you do good. What if your master is still mean to you? Then deal with it. Keep on going because that makes you look good.
00:16:57
Speaker
That's so hard to do, isn't it? Especially in today's society where we know that they are not our physical master. They may be our boss. ah Jesus was hurt when he died for you, and he showed you how to deal with hard times.
00:17:14
Speaker
So you should do like he did. Isaiah said this about Jesus. He did not sin. He did not lie. People said terrible things about Jesus, but he did not talk back.
00:17:31
Speaker
They hurt him, but he did not say that he would hurt them back. Instead, Jesus trusted God because God is a fair judge.
00:17:46
Speaker
And Jesus took our sins as if they were his own sins.
00:17:52
Speaker
He died on the cross, and he died to get rid of our sins. And he died so that we could live for what is right. And you have been made well because Jesus was hurt.
00:18:07
Speaker
You were like sheep. You were going here and there, away from your shepherd. But now you have come back to the shepherd. He is Jesus.

Advice for Husbands and Wives

00:18:19
Speaker
He is the one who takes care of your soul.
00:18:28
Speaker
I'm going to reread that this time out of our Big Bible because I like some of the words that are used in our Big Bible as well. And there are those of us who are grown up and and we can understand as well. So hearing it in our version, our simplified version, now let's use that as a bridge for understanding fully what Peter is saying in our Big but big Bible version.
00:18:54
Speaker
Slaves, with all respect, submit yourself to your masters, and not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are harsh.
00:19:04
Speaker
For this finds favor if, for the sake of conscience toward God, someone endures grief from suffering undeservedly.
00:19:18
Speaker
How many times have we felt that we have suffered grief undeservedly because someone is treating us badly? What credit is there if when you sin and get a beating that you endure it?
00:19:30
Speaker
But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this finds favor with God. You are finding favor with God when you endure this.
00:19:42
Speaker
For you were called to this because Messiah also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you might follow in his footsteps.
00:19:55
Speaker
He committed no sin, nor was there any deceit found in his mouth. And when he was abused, he did not return the abuse. While suffering, he made no threats.
00:20:10
Speaker
Instead, he kept entrusting himself to the one who judges righteously. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree so that we, removed from sins, might live for righteousness.
00:20:28
Speaker
And by his wounds, you were healed.
00:20:36
Speaker
Oh, that is so beautiful, so powerful.
00:20:44
Speaker
If Jesus endured so that we could endure, so that we could follow in his footsteps.
00:20:54
Speaker
So if you are a wife, let your husband lead you. And then if he doesn't believe God's word, he will see how you act. He will see how sinless your life is.
00:21:07
Speaker
And he will see how much you look up to God. And then you won't even have to say anything because he will learn to believe in Jesus. And the way you look on the outside shouldn't be what you seems beautiful.
00:21:23
Speaker
It shouldn't matter if you wear your hair in a braid. It shouldn't matter if you wear gold or not. And it shouldn't matter if you have the best clothes. What should matter is the real you that is inside your body.
00:21:40
Speaker
Beautiful on the inside. Your beauty should come from your kind and quiet spirit. That kind of beauty does not fade away.
00:21:52
Speaker
That kind of beauty is what is important to God. And that's the way women from long ago were beautiful. They hoped in God. they let their husbands lead them.
00:22:06
Speaker
Think of Sarah. She did what Abraham said. She even called him her master. So be like Sarah and do what's right and do not be afraid.
00:22:19
Speaker
And if you are a husband, be kind to your wife. Show that she is important to you by how you act because you work together as a team.
00:22:31
Speaker
and you have the strong place on the team. God is kind, so he lets both of you live as his children. So act like it, and then nothing will get in the way when you pray.
00:22:47
Speaker
All of you live peacefully with each other and try to understand each other's feelings. Love each other as if you were family and be kind.
00:23:01
Speaker
Don't act like you're the greatest and don't do wrong to others because they have done wrong to you. Instead, do good things for others. And that's what God chose you to do.
00:23:15
Speaker
and that way, God can bring good to you. The psalm says it this way. If you want to love life, don't say bad things.
00:23:27
Speaker
If you want to have good days, don't lie. Turn away from what's wrong and do good. Look for the way of shalom and follow it.
00:23:41
Speaker
God watches people who do what is right and he listens when they pray. But God turns his face away from people who sin. Who will hurt you if you want to do good?
00:23:56
Speaker
Let's say someone does hurt you for doing good. God will still bring good to you. Isaiah put it this way. Don't be afraid of the things that sinful people are afraid of.
00:24:10
Speaker
Don't be scared. And in your heart, make Jesus your Lord. In your heart, make Jesus your Lord.
00:24:20
Speaker
I needed to read that twice. It was so important. Always be ready to tell people why you hope in him, but tell them kindly and make them feel important when you do.
00:24:36
Speaker
Be sure you are doing what is right. People might say bad things about how you act, but they will feel bad for saying these things. And it's not good when you are hurt for doing wrong, but it's better when you're hurt for doing good.
00:24:53
Speaker
That might be what God wants.

Blessings in Suffering and Maintaining Faith

00:24:57
Speaker
Jesus died for our sins. He died one time and he died for everyone. He died once and for all.
00:25:07
Speaker
And Jesus has always done what is right. He died for people who do what's wrong. And he did it to bring you to God. In Noah's time, only eight people were saved in the ark.
00:25:23
Speaker
They went through all that water and they were saved. The water you were dipped into when you were baptized is like that water. Being baptized is not for washing dirt off your body.
00:25:36
Speaker
It's for washing sin from your heart. And then you know that things are right between you and God. And you are saved because Jesus came back to life.
00:25:47
Speaker
He went into heaven. He is at God's right side. He is in charge of all the angels and other powers.
00:25:59
Speaker
I'm going to read some of that out of our big Bible as well. It is so powerful.
00:26:09
Speaker
Chapter 3 1 Peter, in starting in
00:26:17
Speaker
Verse 13. Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.
00:26:29
Speaker
Do not be afraid or worry about their threats. Instead, sanctify Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you.
00:26:46
Speaker
Yet with humility and reverence, keeping a clear conscience so that whatever you are accused of, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Messiah may be put to shame.
00:27:02
Speaker
For it is better to suffer for doing good if it is God's will than for doing evil. For Messiah once suffered for sins also, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God.
00:27:19
Speaker
He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit. And through the Spirit, he also went and preached to the spirits in prison.
00:27:32
Speaker
Long ago, they disobeyed while God kept waiting patiently in the days of Noah as the ark was being built. In that ark, a few, that is eight souls, were brought safely through water.
00:27:48
Speaker
Corresponding to that, immersion now brings you to safety. Not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but a pledge to God of a good conscience through the resurrection of Messiah Jesus.
00:28:04
Speaker
He has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels and authorities and powers subjected to him.
00:28:16
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:28:22
Speaker
So I hope that you feel encouraged to endure, to keep running the good race, to keep fighting for your faith, knowing that we are meant to endure as Jesus endured, that we are meant to follow in his footsteps.
00:28:39
Speaker
And it is through experiencing the same types of trials that Jesus experienced that we are able to live through him and learn how to respond because there is nothing that he has not experienced that we do not also experience.
00:28:59
Speaker
Jesus became a man. And he lived here so that we could die and be risen again with him. He died so that he could bring us into eternal life.
00:29:11
Speaker
So as we all die in the the physical, we will be living for forever in the spirit with him. And while we are in the physical, in the flesh, we need to live the way he lived because we are to follow in his footsteps.
00:29:29
Speaker
following all of the great examples that he gave us. Even at the very end, Jesus said, Forgive them, Father, for they don't know what they are doing.
00:29:40
Speaker
Referring to how the people were treating him so badly. And it sure seemed like they knew what they were doing. But Jesus prayed for his enemies, even up to the very end.
00:29:54
Speaker
giving us the right example of how to live and how to endure. And he had absolutely zero sin. In him, no violence was found.
00:30:07
Speaker
He is the Prince of Peace, the Prince of Shalom. Shalom is not just peace. It is wholeness, wellness, fullness in God.
00:30:20
Speaker
And we are to seek that Shalom. We are to seek him and to look for that peace. in everything as we endure difficult times where people are treating us badly. And so when people treat you badly, know that we are made right with God. we are doing in good conscience.
00:30:43
Speaker
We are submitting. We are enduring it because we are following in Jesus's footsteps. It's not going to be easy. It's not going to be easy, brothers and sisters.
00:30:55
Speaker
But we are called, if it is God's will for us to endure, to endure, knowing that no matter how bad our endurance is, it's still not as bad as what Jesus endured for us.
00:31:07
Speaker
Everything he endured was was more harsh than what we are enduring. And that doesn't make it any easier, but we need to remember, it could be worse.
00:31:18
Speaker
And it's not. Jesus is here with us. He will never leave us. He is with us in our suffering. And we when we endure, it is in good conscience.
00:31:31
Speaker
hu That's a tough one sometimes, huh? But it is amazing. I told you I was so excited about today's reading. It is so rich.
00:31:43
Speaker
Such a feast today. Well, I pray for you as you go out into your day that you may but endure whatever it is that God gives you and in ways to practice the daily application that we have read about today.
00:31:59
Speaker
To endure for Jesus and follow in his footsteps. I pray that you will be strong in him. and able to endure and able to pray for those who are difficult and mean to you, that you are able to see the good that God will work, that our goal is to show God's light, that Jesus' light is

Conclusion and Encouragement

00:32:23
Speaker
through us. We are the light of the world.
00:32:26
Speaker
And while Peter didn't specifically use that phrase today, we know in our big picture that we are the light of the world. We are showing God's love by enduring and by showing that we are obedient to God, doing what he wants us to do.
00:32:44
