Today we will begin the book of Jacob (James) and cover Chapter 1:1-15, 17, 19-27 and Chapter 2:1-5, 8-9, and 14-26.

Today we will read about SHOWING we are believers, not just SAYING we are believers.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the connection between showing we are believers rather than just claiming to be believers, spiritual fruit, and God's command to be fruitful and multiply. Talk about big-picture thinking! Are you ready for a big picture understanding of the truth? When we show we are believers by acting like it, by trusting in God no matter how difficult things are, and then being a witness to others about how God strengthened us/saved us/was with us in the difficult situation, other people are encouraged to also put their faith in God, possibly as new believers. If they also, in turn, repeat the cycle of having faith in God during difficult situations and then be a witness to others about how God was also there with them, strengthened them, saved them in the difficult situation and it causes someone else to have faith and follow the example, then what is occurring is a form of "being fruitful and multiplying," which was the command that God gave Adam and Eve at the very beginning when he created them. When we do this we are causing the family of God to grow, both in number and in strength, and the body itself becomes more and more fruitful and multiplies more and more. Showing others we believe in God, not just talking about being a believer, has so much more positive impact than we could ever imagine.

Exploration of the Book of James

00:01:11
Speaker
Well, today we are picking up in the book of James. We have are going to be starting the book of James. And I wanted to give you some interesting trivia on the book of James.
00:01:25
Speaker
So when we have translations of names, for instance, Jesus's name is was not actually called Jesus. His name is Hebrew because Jesus is a Jew and his name is actually Yeshua.
00:01:43
Speaker
So the Greek translation for Yeshua is Jesus. And then we have other translations like Jesus. And so it's kind of like that where we have the name has has been translated and changed a little bit.
00:02:01
Speaker
But his actual given name is Yeshua, Yeshua Messiah, rather than saying Jesus Christ. Christ is Christos. And it was first called by, I think it was the Romans. It was the Romans or the Greeks. I can't recall at this exact second, but it doesn't matter.
00:02:20
Speaker
And they were referred to as, they they called the people who believed Christians because they were translating it into Greek. And our first reference that I saw of that was when Paul was in Rome and he was happy to speak to the visiting dignitary. I think he was a king.
00:02:39
Speaker
And he said, I could have set him free, but he wants to go see Caesar. So off he goes to go see Caesar. And he said to Paul, do you think that I will become a Christian in in such a short speech?
00:02:51
Speaker
And Paul said, well, whether short or long, ah I hope that you come to believe. So that's the first reference we have of Christians. So we're talking about names. So Jesus's name is Yeshua. And in this particular book, it's called James. Now, James is thought to be the brother of Yeshua.
00:03:13
Speaker
And so his Jewish name was actually not James, but it was Jacob. named for the father of the 12 tribes of Israel.
00:03:24
Speaker
Jacob was the son who the 12 tribes. who had the twelve tribes And so it's not uncommon for Jacob to be a very popular name. So what's interesting is it is possible that the book of James was actually renamed from Jacob to James, not because of a translation, but because it was potentially named for King James, who gave us what they called the quote, authorized Bible 1611.
00:03:57
Speaker
in sixteen eleven And because the the name of James translated from Greek would be Demetrius, not Jacob. So in the scriptures, this is the book of Jacob because it doesn't translate in any way to James.
00:04:18
Speaker
It has become the book of James, but it was actually supposed to be a book of Jacob. And so it's it's possible, very likely, that the book was actually sort of renamed for King James.

Introducing the Tree of Life Messianic Jewish Bible

00:04:34
Speaker
And I just thought that was very interesting. What's in a name? So we are going to begin the book of Jacob, as it is noted in my Messianic Jewish version of the Bible ah by the Tree of Life. And that information I actually found located in the introduction to the book of James or Jacob, because they actually call it the book of Jacob and then parentheses James in the Tree of Life version Bible.
00:05:02
Speaker
I love the Tree of Life Version Bible. You've probably never heard of it. You've heard me reference it if you've been around for a little while. But the Tree of Life Bible is a Messianic Jewish version. So in order to um be more understandable to people who are Jewish believers, they maintain the Jewish scriptures.
00:05:26
Speaker
And they use the Jewish words, the Hebrew words, but I'm saying Jewish, but what I really should say is the Hebrew words. So um his name is Yeshua all throughout the Bible.
00:05:39
Speaker
It's not Jesus. And they don't call him Jesus Christ or Yeshua Christ. They call him Messiah Yeshua. And they have other words ah that they will use the actual Hebrew word for. So I've actually been able to pick up a tiny little bit of Hebrew as I read through the Bible this year because they reuse the same ah the same words. For instance, our Bible says the Lord, but the Lord is ah translated in Hebrew as Adonai.
00:06:11
Speaker
So it will say, thus says Adonai. And then in my mind, sometimes I will translate that to thus says the Lord. So it's it's an awesome version of the Bible. If you ever want to check that out as one of your ah multiple references, because sometimes it it translates things and you know a little bit differently, just as all vi Bible versions do. American Standard, NIV, American Standard.
00:06:39
Speaker
ESV, whatever you're reading. they and The message, they all have a little different way, but they try to be more in line with the Hebrew scriptures.
00:06:51
Speaker
So there's a little bit more and than you probably anticipated in our daily reading today. So let's go ahead and pick up in the book of James.

Faith in Action: Love as a Verb

00:06:59
Speaker
James is going to be talking with us about how it looks to show that we have faith in Yeshua, in Jesus, rather than just claiming that we do, but not acting like it.
00:07:16
Speaker
If we claim to be Christian or we claim to be a believer, but you can't really tell by how we behave or by the way that we do things, then one would might not even know that we were a believer if we just look like everybody else in the world.
00:07:38
Speaker
And we say that this is kind of like being in the world without being of the world. because we don't want to look like we are part of the world.
00:07:49
Speaker
We want to look different. We want to stand out. And what is different about us? Well, Jesus told us that people will know that we are his followers by our love.
00:08:04
Speaker
And love, by the way, is a verb. That means it's an action word. That means that love is an action.
00:08:15
Speaker
It is not something you just are, like loving. It is something that you do. And so our faith needs to be something that we do, a verb.
00:08:29
Speaker
an action, not just something that we claim to be, which is a noun. A noun is a person, place, or thing. So we don't want to just say that we are a believer as a name.
00:08:44
Speaker
We want to show it. And that is the big message of our day of our reading today as we read through chapters one and two of the book of Jacob, also called James.
00:08:57
Speaker
ah It says here, starting in verse one, that James was one of Jesus's brothers. He was a leader of Jesus's followers.
00:09:08
Speaker
And he wrote this letter to them. To the 12 tribes of the dispersion, which means that all of the Jewish believers who were living outside of Palestine and scattered throughout the Roman empire.
00:09:25
Speaker
That's what that means. to all of god's people here and there in all the nations Shalom! Hello!
00:09:36
Speaker
Think of hard times as happy times, my brothers and sisters, because your faith is being tested. And that helps you to produce endurance.
00:09:49
Speaker
It helps you learn to keep on believing, no matter what may happen. And when you believe, no matter what, then you are grown up.
00:10:02
Speaker
And your faith fills you. And there is nothing more you need. But do you need to be wise?

Themes of Endurance and Wisdom

00:10:11
Speaker
Then ask God.
00:10:14
Speaker
Because he gives plenty of wisdom to everyone. And he does not blame you for asking. God will make you wise. But you should believe when you ask God.
00:10:27
Speaker
Don't think that he can't do it. Because if that's what you think, then you're like a sea wave that is being blown by the waves, and being blown by the wind here and there.
00:10:41
Speaker
And if you are like that, then you don't really think that God will give you anything. And then your mind would be going different ways at one time. and your faith in Jesus would not be strong.
00:10:57
Speaker
Now, if someone is poor, he should be glad because that is a high place in God's kingdom. And if someone is rich, he should also be glad.
00:11:10
Speaker
But that is a low place in God's kingdom because the rich person is like a wildflower and he will soon fade away. The sun comes up, it is burning hot, and the plant bends over.
00:11:28
Speaker
Its flower falls off, and it's not as beautiful anymore. And rich people are the same way. They will seem to just fade away, even while they are busy. Now, God brings good things to people who keep believing no matter what.
00:11:50
Speaker
And someday, their troubles will be over. And then God will let them live forever. And this life that lasts for forever will be like a crown from God.
00:12:03
Speaker
And God promises this crown of life for everybody who loves him. Now, what if sin comes to your mind? We should not say, oh God is trying to make me sin.
00:12:19
Speaker
Because nothing sinful can make God want to sin. And he does not try to make anyone else want to sin. People sin when sin looks good to them.
00:12:33
Speaker
And so sin leads them on. And first they start thinking about it. And then they sin. And sin grows.
00:12:44
Speaker
And then it ends up in death.
00:12:48
Speaker
God sends every good gift, and he sends every gift that is clean and sinless. God is the Father of heaven's lights, and he does not change like shadows that move around.
00:13:06
Speaker
Remember this. People should be in a hurry to listen, and they should not be in a hurry to talk. And they should not get angry very fast.
00:13:19
Speaker
Because being angry does not help us live the way that God wants us to live. God wants us to live a life that is right. So stop being around things that make you even think dirty thoughts.
00:13:35
Speaker
Because sin is everywhere. Stay away from it. But welcome God's word. You know it as if it had been planted in you, and it can save you.
00:13:51
Speaker
But don't just listen to God's word. Instead, do what God's word says. Let's say you listen to God's word, but you do not do what it tells you to do.
00:14:05
Speaker
Well, then you are like a person who is looking into a mirror, and you see yourself, but when you leave, you forget what you look like. But let's say you look carefully.
00:14:18
Speaker
Look carefully at God's way. And you keep looking. And then you don't forget what you heard. And then you do it. Then, whatever you do, God will bring good things to you.
00:14:34
Speaker
But let's say you think that you're following God, but you do not control what you say. well then you are lying to yourself because you are not following God.
00:14:46
Speaker
Our big Bible says that if you don't bridle your tongue, if you don't keep your tongue in control.
00:14:57
Speaker
Now what does God want us to do? God wants us to take care of children who have no mother or father. He wants us to take care of women whose husbands have died.
00:15:09
Speaker
And he wants us to keep our hearts from getting dirty in the world's sin.
00:15:16
Speaker
You believe in Jesus, so do not treat some people better than others. Let's say someone comes to your meeting place. And this person wears a gold ring and has very nice clothes.
00:15:30
Speaker
But then someone who is poor comes in. And this person wears worn-out clothes. Let's say you are very nice to the rich person and you say to them, oh, here is a good place for you to sit.
00:15:48
Speaker
But you tell the poor person they need to stand or you let that person sit on the floor next to your feet. Haven't you treated one better than the other?
00:16:00
Speaker
That is a sinful way to treat people. I'm going to add a little something in that in there that

Faith and Works: Examples from Abraham and Rahab

00:16:09
Speaker
reminds us that Paul taught us that God does not have favorites.
00:16:14
Speaker
So neither are we to have favorites with one another either.
00:16:19
Speaker
Listen, James says, God planned for poor people to be rich in faith and he chose them. He will give them the riches of his kingdom.
00:16:31
Speaker
And this is what he promises to people who love him. Now God's word says to love your neighbor like you love yourself. That is the law of our king. And if you do this, then you are doing the right thing.
00:16:51
Speaker
But what if you treat some people better than others? Well, then you are sinning because you are breaking the law. What if a person says he believes in God's words, but he doesn't obey?
00:17:05
Speaker
Well, then what good does it do for him to believe? Can that kind of believing save him? Let's say one of God's people has no clothes or the person has no food and you just tell that person, go on your way. I hope the best will come to you.
00:17:23
Speaker
Stay warm and get plenty to eat. But you don't do anything to help that person to stay warm. You don't share any of your food.
00:17:37
Speaker
What good is your faith? If all you do is believe, then it won't do you any good. You also have to do what God wants.
00:17:49
Speaker
Faith by itself is nothing. It's dead. Now somebody might say, well, you have faith, but I do what God wants.
00:18:01
Speaker
You try to show me that you have faith, but do nothing for God. But I will show you my faith by doing what God wants. And you say that you believe that there is one God?
00:18:15
Speaker
That's good. But even the bad spirits believe that, and they shake to think about it. Faith by itself does no good.
00:18:27
Speaker
You have to do what God wants. Think about Abraham, for instance. He was right with God, and he showed it. He gave his son Isaac to God.
00:18:41
Speaker
So you see, Abraham believed God, so he did something. Faith was just part of it, and obeying was the other part. So God's word came true.
00:18:54
Speaker
Abraham believed God, and that made everything right between Abraham and God. And God said that Abraham was his friend.
00:19:09
Speaker
So you see, now it's just as if you had never sinned. And that's because you do what God wants. And it's not just because you believe. It was the same way with Rahab.
00:19:23
Speaker
Do you remember Rahab? She let two of God's people stay at her house, and she sent the soldiers who were looking for God's people one way, while she sent God's people another way.
00:19:36
Speaker
And she kept them safe. A body is dead without its spirit, and faith is dead without doing what God wants.
00:19:50
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:19:55
Speaker
Well, I just want to clarify to make sure that there is no misunderstanding that James is not saying that we are saved by obeying the the law or by obeying.
00:20:09
Speaker
We are saved because we believe. However, when we believe, we need to prove and show that we believe by by doing what God wants us to do.
00:20:22
Speaker
So it's one in front of the other. They work together, but we are saved by grace. And then we do what God wants us to do.
00:20:35
Speaker
we've spoken about that throughout the year where God told the people, he says that you you claim to be my people, but you don't do any of the things I tell you to do. He says, obedience is what he is looking for.
00:20:49
Speaker
he says, religion is what not what he's just looking for. It's for people just to say, oh, I believe. He's looking for a heart that follows after him. He's looking for a heart that wants to do things the way that God wants things to be done.
00:21:07
Speaker
And God is love. He wants us to love, love him and to love one another. and when we love one another, we are moved with compassion.
00:21:20
Speaker
to do things for each other, to help take care of one another, to look out for one another, to pray for one another, to be kind to one another, to not speak poorly about one another.
00:21:35
Speaker
We are thoughtful of one another and want to be reconciled. We don't want to be angry with our brother or sister or our mother or our father. Instead, we want to be together, unified,
00:21:49
Speaker
brought together as one in spirit. So that is what it looks like when we love, but it is not the following of love that saves us.

Spiritual Growth and Metaphorical Fruit-Bearing

00:22:02
Speaker
It is faith that saves us. And then our works are showing our faith is the order of operations.
00:22:13
Speaker
I love today's reading. It it is so awesome.
00:22:19
Speaker
I'm not even sure that it was so, it was so detailed. I'm not even sure I can go back and, and give us any additional information other than that. Uh, I've recorded this a couple of times, so I don't want to repeat what I already said in in this.
00:22:35
Speaker
I had to make a couple of corrections. My internet went out and, uh, and then my thoughts weren't coming properly. So i had to restart it. And now I'm not sure if I've already mentioned that, um,
00:22:48
Speaker
Jesus, I don't think I mentioned this. When Jesus was walking with his disciples, they were on their way somewhere and he passed by a fig tree and the fig tree was not growing any fruit.
00:23:02
Speaker
And so Jesus cursed the fig tree. And so it would never bear fruit at all again. And we can be like a tree that bears no fruit.
00:23:16
Speaker
You can tell what kind of tree we are by what kind of fruit we bear. But if we're not bearing any fruit at all, it's like a dead branch. is We're not doing anything. We're just taking up space.
00:23:29
Speaker
And that's what we're being instructed in today that we don't want to just claim to be a plant, you know let's say an orange tree or an olive tree.
00:23:39
Speaker
Otherwise, we're just a tree and we're not doing anything. And our purpose, there there is nothing being done. Our purpose is to grow and produce fruit.
00:23:52
Speaker
That's the reason the tree is alive, is to bear fruit and and procreate, to make more of itself. So we are meant to grow and to make more believers.
00:24:06
Speaker
And we do that with our fruit. Our fruit actually helps grow new believers. We are also like a seed, Jesus tells us, that a single kernel of wheat falls to the ground and it dies.
00:24:23
Speaker
And it not doesn't stay a little seed. Instead, it grows and it transforms into an entire plant that then bears more more of itself.
00:24:36
Speaker
And that is what we are meant to do. We're not supposed to exist in a vacuum by ourselves. We are supposed to grow. and we're supposed to grow fruit. We're not just supposed to plant roots.
00:24:51
Speaker
We're supposed to grow fruit. so that we can help other people become believers to grow God's family, so that God's family is fruitful and multiplies. Just like when God made things in the very beginning, he told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply.
00:25:14
Speaker
And so it's not just referring to a physical fruit and multiply. We are meant to multiply spiritually. God gives us spiritual gifts and we are meant to grow because remember our spiritual gifts help to grow other believers.
00:25:34
Speaker
It helps the entire family of God, the entire body of God be strong and to grow. So if we are not doing our part by by living our purpose and doing the good works that God has created for us to do, and we are not bearing fruit, then Jesus tells us that we are like a branch.
00:25:57
Speaker
Every branch that does not bear fruit is cut off and thrown into the fire. We are meant to grow fruit. We are to be fruitful and multiply, not just physically, but spiritually to grow God's family.
00:26:18
Speaker
How do you love that big picture today? That is so awesome. That's why it's so important to live out what we say we believe.
00:26:30
Speaker
When we do that, we are also a witness. We are witnesses to God's strength, to God's faithfulness. When we experience hard times and we believe and trust in God no matter what, and we are enduring, then others see us.
00:26:50
Speaker
Because remember, people follow up what they see. We are examples. So we are when we live out our faith, we are actually encouraging the growth of others' faith.
00:27:03
Speaker
that they will see us enduring and believing in God no matter what. And then we share our witness with people to say, man, it was tough, but God really saved me from the lion's den.
00:27:18
Speaker
Just like we heard Paul talk about yesterday. God really saved me from this. And when we bear witness to God's faithfulness, then it encourages others to also endure when they have difficult times, which in turn encourages other people to endure in their hard times.
00:27:38
Speaker
And it perpetuates. It keeps traveling on. That is the kind of growth that we are meant to to pass on. And it's a gift that keeps on giving.
00:27:51
Speaker
So we'd you'd never know just how far your faith will will grow and multiply. And it it just takes faith as small as a mustard seed, Jesus says. And that the mustard seed, although it is the tiniest of seeds, grows into the biggest of bushes.
00:28:14
Speaker
It seems like it's such a small thing, but when we bear fruit, we grow into the biggest bush in the garden. And then in turn, other people grow and we are growing and we are being fruitful and multiplying.
00:28:30
Speaker
I love how everything works together, don't you? i guess I was able to speak and and explain that a little bit more and to give us other examples. ah Oh, the Holy Spirit is so good.
00:28:43
Speaker
Well, thank you so much for joining me today. I pray that you are encouraged and that you are growing in the knowledge of the truth so that you can show others and tell others and be a visibly a believer so that others can see you and know that you are a believer by your faith and you're in how you act out and show your

Sharing Personal Experiences and Daily Impact

00:29:07
Speaker
faith.
00:29:07
Speaker
in in in God and in Jesus. I hope that you are growing in all of that and that you feel encouraged to be a witness when you are going through whatever difficult time. Because you know what? You can't go very long without enduring something difficult in your week.
00:29:25
Speaker
So whatever it is, no matter how small or how big it is, i want to encourage you to be a witness for God so that you can help somebody else grow.
00:29:38
Speaker
You won't know, you might not even ever know that you helped somebody. But when you talk about things you and you are that witness everywhere you go, when somebody when somebody says, how is your day?
00:29:50
Speaker
That is my favorite opening line. Because when someone says, how is your day? That's when I can say, man, thank you for asking. Because typically people just want to hear the standard. Oh, it's good. How is yours? it's It's fine. How are you? And it becomes just like a repetition. How are you? Fine. How are you? Great. Oh, good. Yes. Goodbye. But you know what? You don't have to give that answer.
00:30:16
Speaker
you can actually say, man, I was having a really difficult time on the way to work here. I hit every single light red.
00:30:28
Speaker
And you know what? I was getting really frustrated when I heard God speaking to me and saying, be still and know that I am God. Everything I do has perfect timing.
00:30:41
Speaker
So you are exactly where you need to be at just the right time. And I don't know what it was. Maybe God was protecting me from an accident potentially. You never know. to if i had if I had made the light, then I would have been ahead of something. And then somebody could have you know gone in front of whatever it happens to be.

And it happens to be that if I wasn't at that timing, I wouldn't be running into you right now to tell you about my day. But man, God just works all of his everything into just perfect timing. And it just really helped me see how God was with me all throughout my day.

No matter what, the fact that I'm even talking with you right now. And so that's just a very small example of how we can incorporate that in our day. It can look like saying, man, I was having a really difficult time, but then God showed me this and then I felt better.

Whatever the witness is, whatever you've been talking about with God, share it. When someone says, how are you today? How was your day today? That's a perfect opening line. As far as I'm concerned, if people don't want an actual real answer to that question, don't bother asking it. ah It's okay to say, man, I am having a crappy day.

It's incredible how God works everything together. So don't be afraid like Paul told us yesterday. God did not give us a spirit of timidity, a spirit of fear, but he gave us a spirit of power.

And you just, you can't really ever know just how much growth has caused, has been caused because of your faithfulness to witness about God. It's absolutely true. I have had that, I've seen it happen and then learned about it later and it's just been amazing.

I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening to the December 5th reading. And I pray that you will um just really have a purposeful day of living out your faith until you come back and listen to tomorrow's daily reading.
