Today we will continue reading Paul's 1st letter to Timothy while Timothy was working in Ephesus- 1 Timothy Chapter 3:1-12, 14-16, Chapter 4:1-4, 6-16, and Chapter 5:1-5, 8-11, 13-15, and 17-23.

Today's reading and discussion will be about leading by example. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, leads us by example. We may not think of ourselves as "leaders" of anyone, but we are always an example to others in everything we do, whether we behave well or less than ideally. It is not enough to just talk about how people should and should not behave. We need to SHOW others how to do the right thing by doing the right thing ourselves, thereby leading by example. It isn't always easy, but Paul tells us that when we do this others will be able to see us growing spiritually and we will save not only ourselves but those who see and hear us! We need to remember to think in terms of the "big picture" and not limit our sight to doing what we want to do in each moment without considering how our actions can possibly affect anyone else who might see or hear us, whether they are believers or unbelievers. Training ourselves to live like God wants us to live is good for our lives both now and forever.

Introduction and Purpose

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back everybody. Today is December 1st. Oh my goodness, this is the last month of the year.
00:00:13
Speaker
oh my goodness, we are just p flying through. My name is Robin. I'm with In The Family Way Coaching and together we are here for our daily Bible reading. We

Overview of Day-by-Day Kids Bible

00:00:24
Speaker
are going through the Day-by-Day Kids Bible.
00:00:27
Speaker
We have been going through it all year And today is no different. This has been written by Karen Henley, and it is a fantastic version of the Bible.
00:00:38
Speaker
This is a chronological Bible, and it gives us God's big story all the way from Genesis to Revelation in one continuous timeline.
00:00:48
Speaker
It doesn't have every single detail, but it does carry most of them. And it gives us the complete big story. So what is left out is not part of the story as so much as it is little details, such as specifics in the law and genealogies and stuff like that.
00:01:07
Speaker
And it doesn't give us every single proverb. and like that but otherwise it is very complete so we have been going through this this year to understand the big story of god's bible for us this has been so useful because it doesn't do as much good to read god's word if we cannot understand it and i have found that this has been an extremely good tool for using to understand the big bible
00:01:38
Speaker
So if you have been following along for a little but a little while, you might be using your calendar. I

Free Resources Offered

00:01:45
Speaker
have this calendar available on my site for you to download. There's no charge to download it. You don't have to enter your email address. There's no clickbait. You don't have to subscribe to anything. This is just a tool for you to use, even if you just need a calendar for your refrigerator.
00:02:02
Speaker
Just download that. I won't even know. And stick it up there. We are using this calendar to cross off our days. This is like a bookmark, and it helps us see where we left off last. Because, you know, life happens, and you might not have a chance to get around to hearing or watching today's daily reading exactly on December first I know i have been late getting these out lately, so it's on a lot of days lately. It's actually been impossible for you to hear it on that day. You've had to listen to the previous day.
00:02:36
Speaker
So I'm trying to get better again. I've just, I've had a lot going on and I want to thank you for your grace on that. I am trying to be more diligent. Maybe I am like my, like my black ink cartridge on my printer. Maybe I am starting to run out.
00:02:54
Speaker
But I am here every day and I am thanking you also for your faithfulness.

Global Listener Engagement

00:02:59
Speaker
I would like to say hello to, I hope I'm saying this correctly, Ram Baral in Nepal.
00:03:07
Speaker
Oh my goodness, God's word is really far reaching. Not that we don't have believers all over the world. i just can't believe that you are listening to this event in Nepal.
00:03:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for being here, Ram. I'm not sure if I'm saying your name correctly. It could be Ram, but I think it's Ram. and i am so thankful for you and thank you so much for your kind words as you commented on the ah audio on the youtube music thank you for praying for me i really appreciate that i feel so connected to you my brothers and maybe sisters there in nepal as well I actually visited India a number of years ago, and I know that that's not the same, but ah I met people from Nepal there. And in my work, I traveled to a different site in Northern California, where I am located in Southern California. I went to Northern California to help out in training with people at a site in Northern California for Amazon.
00:04:13
Speaker
And there were many Nepalese women there. And we have a couple at our warehouse where I work too. And I got to tell you, the Nepalese people are beautiful. They are not, I don't mean like physically beautiful. I mean, you are beautiful on the inside.
00:04:31
Speaker
You, your women are so strong and ah not, not physically strong. I mean, strong in the mind and you are just lovely people. So thank you so much. It is a delight to know that you are listening. And I hope that there are sisters with you as well. You said that the people in Nepal were praying for me. So I'm curious.
00:04:54
Speaker
Thank you for being here. And if you are listening locally here in the United States, welcome to you. We have had a lot of new subscribers lately. This event has reached 70 subscribers.
00:05:09
Speaker
That might not sound like a very huge number, but you know what? When I started this event for God in January, there was one Julie and you kids with Diamond and Pearl and Jasper, not Jasper, rather Jedi and Forest.
00:05:29
Speaker
and So thank you for being here, whether you have been here the whole year or whether you have picked this up at some point later in the year. I really love knowing that there are people listening as we read God's word. And thank you for helping us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:05:47
Speaker
And in fact, we're going to be talking more about that today because our reading today is taking place in the letter that Paul wrote to Timothy. It is

Reading from Timothy: Leadership in the Church

00:05:58
Speaker
Paul's first letter to Timothy while he is in Ephesus. And he is going to be talking to us about today about um being a good leader.
00:06:10
Speaker
And so we have talked about this a little bit in the past. ah probably Actually, I should say several times in the past. But these lessons are very relevant.
00:06:21
Speaker
And it teaches us to lead by example. We need to be leading others by our own examples. Jesus is our good shepherd and he leads us by example.
00:06:36
Speaker
God was not happy with the leadership that he was seeing in the old covenant with the leaders. And he liked David because David was leading the people like a shepherd because David grew up being a shepherd. So he knew what it was like.
00:06:53
Speaker
to take care of people, to look after them, and to lead. Nobody was perfect, and David was certainly not perfect, but he was a man after God's own heart.
00:07:06
Speaker
And people follow. Examples. Whether they are good examples or bad examples. We saw a lot of situations where the people of Israel followed bad examples because the leaders were bad.
00:07:23
Speaker
They were putting out bad examples. So we are called to be good leaders. And so Paul is going to be talking with Timothy today about the qualifications, the character traits, I should say, of a good leader.
00:07:40
Speaker
So let's pick up and read all about it. 1 Timothy chapters 3, 4, and 5 today.
00:07:51
Speaker
Paul says to Timothy, Here is a saying that you can believe. It's good when people want to be leaders in God's churches. The leader needs to live the right way.
00:08:05
Speaker
Then no one can blame him for anything. And he should have only one wife. He shouldn't overdo anything. And instead, he should control himself.
00:08:18
Speaker
He should be the kind of man that people can look up to. A leader should welcome people into his house. and he shouldn't get drunk. He should be a good teacher.
00:08:31
Speaker
He should not hurt people or things. He should not fuss and fight. He should not love money.
00:08:43
Speaker
a leader should lead his own family well. His children should obey him and look up to him. It would be bad if he could not control his own family.
00:08:54
Speaker
then how could he take care of God's church? A leader in God's church should not be a new believer because if he is, then he might get proud and then he would get judged like Satan did because Satan became proud.
00:09:13
Speaker
Even people who do not believe should speak well of a church leader. That means that we treat people who are not believers well so that we cannot be accused of treating people poorly because they're simply not believers. Paul has spoken many times about not showing favoritism.
00:09:36
Speaker
And ah discriminating against somebody and treating them poorly because they are not ah a believer in Jesus is a terrible kind of discrimination. So we need to be careful that we are not treating unbelievers poorly.
00:09:52
Speaker
They need to be able to speak well of a church leader. Choose men

Roles and Integrity in Church Leadership

00:09:58
Speaker
to help the leaders. and They should be men that people look up to. They should say and do what is true.
00:10:06
Speaker
They should not drink too much wine, and they should not try to get rich by doing wrong. They should keep believing, and they should know that they are doing right.
00:10:20
Speaker
So try them out first, and if they are good men, then they can be helpers. Their wives also should be women that people look up to, and they should not say bad things about other people.
00:10:34
Speaker
We call that gossiping. They should not overdo things. They should be women you can trust. A man who helps leaders should have only one wife.
00:10:48
Speaker
And he should be a good leader for his family. I hope that I can come see you soon, but I might not be able to. And that's why I am writing these things to you.
00:11:00
Speaker
And now you will know how people should act in God's family. His family is the church. There's no question about it.
00:11:12
Speaker
Being like God is a big mystery. God appeared in a human body, and his spirit showed that he was right. Angels saw him.
00:11:25
Speaker
The nations heard about him. And people in the world believed in him. And he went up to heaven, shining with greatness.
00:11:38
Speaker
And what the Spirit says is clear. Some people will turn away from God and they will follow spirits that lie. People who lie don't know right from wrong anymore.
00:11:50
Speaker
They tell people they can't get married. They tell them that they can't eat this or that. But God made food for us, and we should eat and be thankful for it, because everything that God made is good.
00:12:10
Speaker
Show God's people these things, and then you will be doing a good job of serving Jesus. You grew up knowing the truth, and you follow good teaching.
00:12:22
Speaker
So do not listen to made-up stories that lead people away from God. Instead, teach yourself to be who God wants you to be.
00:12:34
Speaker
You can train your body, and that does a little good. But also, train yourself to live like God wants.
00:12:45
Speaker
That does a lot of good. And it's good for your life now and forever.
00:12:54
Speaker
Here is a saying that you can believe. We hope in the living God. He wants to save everyone.
00:13:05
Speaker
And most of all, he saves people who believe. So teach people these things. Tell people that these are rules to live by.
00:13:17
Speaker
and do not let anybody put you down for being young, Timothy. Instead, show God's people how to talk. Show them how to live.
00:13:29
Speaker
Show them how to love. Show them how to believe. and show them how to have hearts that are clean from sin.
00:13:42
Speaker
Work at getting people together and read God's word to them. Work at teaching. Do you remember when the church leaders put their hands on you?
00:13:55
Speaker
They told God's message for you. We call that prophesying. Use the gift you got then. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you.
00:14:10
Speaker
And stay busy doing these things for God. Do them with all of your heart. And then everybody can see how you are growing. Remember we talked about that you never stop spiritually growing.
00:14:26
Speaker
You may stop physically growing. You may even shrink as you get older. But we never should stop growing spiritually. Watch your life carefully.
00:14:38
Speaker
Watch what you teach. and Keep following Jesus even when times are hard. Then you will save yourself and you will save people who hear you too. Now you can tell an older man that he has done something wrong, but do not be hard on him when you do that.
00:15:02
Speaker
Instead, teach him as if he were your father and treat younger men like brothers. Treat older women like they are your mother and treat younger women like they are your sisters.
00:15:17
Speaker
Be good and right in the way that you treat them. Sometimes a woman's husband dies. Now find out if a woman like this actually does need help.
00:15:31
Speaker
Let's say she has children or grandchildren and she's done a lot for them. Now it is their turn to help her. And this makes God happy.
00:15:44
Speaker
Sometimes there is a woman who has no family to help her. And then her hope is in God. So she prays and she asks God to help her.
00:15:56
Speaker
So keep a list of women whose husbands have died. These women should be more than 60 years old. And they are women who stayed with their husbands for as long as they lived. And people know them for the good things that they have done.
00:16:12
Speaker
They took good care of their children. or they welcomed people into their houses. Or maybe they did good things for God's people. Or maybe they helped people who were in trouble.
00:16:26
Speaker
But don't put younger women on this list. because they often want to get remarried again. And sometimes they get lazy and they talk about other people and they don't mind their own business and they say things that they should not say.
00:16:43
Speaker
So I tell younger women to get married. They should have children and they should take care of their homes. Then Satan will not have a chance to send lies around.
00:16:55
Speaker
what What Paul is talking about here is keeping busy so that they don't have so much extra free time that they just have no no nothing to do except make trouble.
00:17:06
Speaker
And that's what Paul is talking about there. Now, what if people do not even work for what their families need? What if they don't work for what their children need?
00:17:19
Speaker
Well, that shows that they don't really believe in Jesus. because even people who don't believe are better off than they are. Some people have already turned away from God, and they're following Satan.
00:17:36
Speaker
Some leaders take care of the businesses of the church, and they should be treated as very important people. Most of all, treat leaders who teach as important people.
00:17:49
Speaker
God's Word says it this way. Let the

Correcting Leaders: Focus on Reconciliation

00:17:53
Speaker
working ox eat some of the grain. It also says, pay a worker for his work.
00:18:01
Speaker
So do not listen when someone says something bad about a leader. But you may listen if two or three people say that it is indeed true. So let's say that a leader sins.
00:18:14
Speaker
Then the people should get together and tell him. And that way other people can learn from it. Notice that the goal here is to build up, not to tear down.
00:18:26
Speaker
We talked about that maybe a month or so ago, about the purpose of correction is not to be as not to condemn. Correction is not meant to condemn another person. It is meant to reconcile and to restore that person.
00:18:45
Speaker
Paul says, do what I tell you and do not treat some people better than others. And don't be too fast to put your hands on people to pray. Don't be a part of other people's sins.
00:18:57
Speaker
Keep your heart clean. And Timothy, don't just drink water. Drink a little bit of wine because that will help your stomach and it will help the sickness you have so often.

Personal Care Advice to Timothy

00:19:13
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. Do you like Paul's little note to Timothy at the end of this particular portion of his letter? He writes as he thinks of things to say, and at that moment he was thinking about Timothy in his stomach.
00:19:30
Speaker
It could be, I'm wondering, since Timothy was a little bit timid and Paul was reassuring him to use his charisma and his gift. It makes me wonder if maybe he needed a little bit of wine to help him not be so nervous because when our stomach is very tense and nervous, it can it can upset it.
00:19:49
Speaker
So Paul was giving him telling him to drink a little bit of wine, and that would help his stomach. I thought that was very sweet. Because remember, this is a personal letter that Paul wrote to Timothy.
00:20:03
Speaker
And with that, did you see how Paul was teaching us today throughout our entire reading to lead by example? Paul has taught us multiple times that we need to be imitators of Jesus.
00:20:19
Speaker
And

Leading by Example

00:20:20
Speaker
as we are imitators of Jesus, we are meant to lead by example. It seems like it is so common and easy for people to see the one bad thing that we do, especially if you are a mama or a daddy and you have kids. It seems like kids to have a tendency to pick up bad habits,
00:20:41
Speaker
faster than good habits. That is so frustrating to mamas and daddies.
00:20:49
Speaker
We want so much to lead by example, and it seems sometimes like it is so much easier to pick up the bad habits than it is the good habits. I know I see that in my house, and I'm always, of course, blaming my husband for that one. I say, look, she's behaving just like you. She didn't she wouldn't do that if it wasn't for you. Why can't she act like me?
00:21:12
Speaker
ah mm Maybe she is acting like me. And then I see myself in her, and I think... Uh-oh. Oh. oh Oh, i I guess she does act like me a bit too. And I say, gosh darn it, why can't you pick up my good habits and not my bad ones? ah So Paul is telling Timothy here that we need to show people.
00:21:37
Speaker
It's not enough just to tell people because then we're just blah, blah, blah, talk, talk, talk. And we have a saying and it says actions speak louder than words.
00:21:49
Speaker
So we need to show people. Paul says, but previously, that he worked everywhere he went. He made sure that he showed them how to live. He showed them an example. He became what is called an object lesson.
00:22:07
Speaker
He always made himself a lesson so that people could learn from him. And this is a very good trait to to have. We need to make ourselves and remember that we are actually object lessons for everybody around us, even if we're not aiming to be a leader, but especially for those who are leading.
00:22:30
Speaker
i i know personally for me that I have made a number of decisions this year based on the fact that I am leading this event.
00:22:41
Speaker
And i want to be able to follow what we are learning about in our examples and in our daily applications. So i have to behave as such. And so I feel like that, ah but as Paul said, I'm trying to think how he worded it, that they're so easily visible is what he was referring to.
00:23:06
Speaker
very easily, just very, ah very visible in the spotlight. There we go in the spotlight. And this is an event that ah God has led me to do. So it's me. I am in a spotlight and i don't mind sharing my, my human nature, my struggles so that you can see where God is using these things that we are learning about in my, in my life in real time. So that you can see that it's not always easy, even for me to follow. I just have to remember to obey and and do what God wants me to do.
00:23:45
Speaker
Because I want to be sure that I am providing a good example and showing what that struggle looks like. I'm really um passionate about showing the human struggle as to what it looks like in real time as we have to go through these decisions that we make.
00:24:04
Speaker
They're painful. they They are a struggle. These things, to these ways that we are to behave and show others how to learn how to learn and to live we have to work at it ourselves. That's why Paul says to train yourself.
00:24:20
Speaker
Train yourself to live like God wants. And that does lots of good. And it's good for your life now and forever. And when we do these things, when we watch our lives carefully, and we watch what we teach, and we keep following Jesus, even when times are hard, which is those times when it's difficult to make the right decision,
00:24:43
Speaker
then we not only save ourselves, but we save the people who hear us too. So we've been learning a lot about what we call the big picture thinking.
00:24:56
Speaker
Decisions and behaviors and things that we do don't just affect us in the in the short term. If we are making good choices, these good choices are building up and strengthening the entire body of Jesus, the entire church, the entire family.
00:25:18
Speaker
And likewise, if we make bad decisions and we only are thinking of ourselves and not what Jesus wants us to do, then We are making bad decisions that cost not only ourselves, but anyone who can see or hear us as we do them.
00:25:36
Speaker
So they have far greater reaching consequences than we would like or that or than we intend. But they are there both for good or for bad.
00:25:51
Speaker
So we need to make sure that we are always striving to do good so that people can see our growth. And that way they will be encouraged to also grow. And then together we are growing, not just ourselves, but the whole body.
00:26:08
Speaker
Ah, it's it's a beautiful picture. It really goes to show again how connected we all are together, you and me, even though I don't know you personally.
00:26:21
Speaker
i don't know all of you. I know some of you, but I don't know all of you. And we are all still connected so closely because we have God's spirit within us.
00:26:34
Speaker
And that creates a whole body, a whole family. of believers. And it's not just in name. It is in spirit. We are one.
00:26:46
Speaker
Jesus prayed that we would become one with each other and one with them, the same them being Jesus and God, the same way that Jesus and God are one.
00:26:59
Speaker
So

Connectedness and Responsibility of Believers

00:27:00
Speaker
Jesus prayed for that. And God answered that by sending us his Holy Spirit at Shavuot.
00:27:08
Speaker
So that is how important it is that we lead by example, especially if we are in a position of leadership. And it seems like no matter what, we are always at some point in in a a position of leadership because it doesn't matter how young we are.
00:27:27
Speaker
There will always be someone younger than us. There will be peers who are our same age as us. And we are all always an example, no matter how young we are, Diamond, no matter how grown we're getting, Pearl, no matter how old we get, no matter how young we are, we are examples so that others see us.
00:27:50
Speaker
And even a child is known by their actions, the Bible tells us. And so you can be known as a leader, even you, Diamond.
00:28:01
Speaker
No matter how young you are, you can be seen as a leader. Paul tells us today, and then we'll get we'll get ready to finalize this here. He says,
00:28:14
Speaker
You grew up knowing the truth. You follow good teaching. Teach yourself to be who God wants you to be.
00:28:28
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are encouraged and that you have an idea as to how to behave as a leader as we grow spiritually. And I hope that you feel like God has lit your light today.

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:29:09
Speaker
spiritually the way Paul talked about today for Timothy. Oh, and don't neglect the spiritual gifts within you. There we go. i almost forgot about that one. Remember not to neglect your spiritual gifts. That's part of growing. We learned about that recently, that when we use our spiritual gifts, it grows all of us in the body.
00:29:29
