Today we will read the letter from Jude (Judah) and begin the first letter from Peter: 1 Peter Chapter 1:1-9, 13-23, and 25.

Today we will be encouraged by Jude to defend our faith against people who tell us that we can sin all we want to because God is kind. Peter's letter will remind us that God calls us saints, and tells us that we must be holy and sinless because He is holy and sinless.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the need for us to look different than the rest of the world. In the same way that God called the Hebrew people to be HIS people, set apart for Him, we have been grafted into God's family tree, born again. This means that we also share the responsibility of being different than those who are of the world. Jesus told us that people will know we are His followers by our love. Judah reminds us today to be kind to all people. We show our love for God and how much we value Him when we are obedient to Him and live like He does.

Introduction to Daily Bible Reading

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Today is the daily recording for December 7th. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching. And together, you and i we are here for our daily Bible reading as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:21
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me today, whatever time or whatever day you are getting around to watching or listening to today's daily reading.

Insights into the Book of Jude

00:00:29
Speaker
I'm so glad that you are hungry. We have some reading to do, and I hope that you will be full before you go.
00:00:36
Speaker
it If you are following along on your calendar, go ahead and get that out because we're ready to cross off our day today. We are definitely going to read the Bible today.
00:00:51
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading the book of Jude. And i like to talk about names a little bit. i'd like names. And Jude is actually short for Judah.
00:01:02
Speaker
And he was one of the 12 sons of Jacob. Not this particular Judah. This is actually a brother of Jesus. So he was also the brother along with Jacob when we read the book of James the other day.
00:01:20
Speaker
So we have Jacob and Judah. Now we gave the Hebrew name for ah the book of James, which ah we think may have been renamed to James or named in honor of King James, but it's actually Jacob. And the name Judah is actually the anglicized word for Yehudah.
00:01:45
Speaker
So that's actually where the and the Hebrew name for the Jewish people comes from. We have anglicized the name to be Jewish and calling them the Jews, but they are the Yehudim.

Warnings Against False Believers

00:01:59
Speaker
And so that was a very interesting tidbit that I did not know until reading about the book of Jude and the name where the name comes from.
00:02:10
Speaker
So I thought that would be interesting to share for you. So we are going to be reading in the book of Jude, and he was a brother of Jesus, as we mentioned, and we are going to be reading the first chapter of 1 Peter.
00:02:28
Speaker
Let's see, in our reading for the book of Jude, it does not include ah something in the the first verse, I believe. So we're going to read that out of our big Bible.
00:02:44
Speaker
It tells us in Jude 1 verse 1, Judah, a slave of Jesus, the Messiah and brother of Jacob. So that is how we know that Jude was the brother of Jacob and that his name is Judah in full.
00:03:04
Speaker
To those who are called, who are loved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus the Messiah. May mercy and shalom and love be multiplied to you.

Historical Context and Symbolism in Jude

00:03:17
Speaker
That is my prayer for you today as well, dear listener or viewer. That may the mercy and shalom and love of God and Jesus be multiplied to you.
00:03:34
Speaker
To the people God chose, you are dear friends to me. Please fight for your faith. Jesus trusted his people to keep believing.
00:03:46
Speaker
Some people have quietly come into your group and they do not obey God. They say, God is kind so we can sin all we want.
00:03:58
Speaker
and they don't believe in Jesus, but he is our only Lord and King. Remember, God saved his people from Egypt.
00:04:11
Speaker
And later, some of those same people did not believe in him. So God got rid of them. And some of the angels did not obey because they did not stay where God put them in charge.
00:04:24
Speaker
And they left their own home. So God sent them into the darkness and they are in chains there. They will be there until the day that God judges.
00:04:38
Speaker
The people in the town of Sodom, they sinned with sex. And we can look at what happened to them in Sodom. We can see what happens when people get into trouble with God.
00:04:50
Speaker
God pays them back with fire. The people who have come into your group, Now Michael is the head angel, and he fussed with about body.
00:05:03
Speaker
and they turn away from any one who is in charge they say bad things about heaven's beings and michael is the head angel and he fussed with satan about moses's body But even Michael did not dare to say bad things about Satan.
00:05:24
Speaker
And instead, he said that the Lord will put you down. But these people say bad things against anything that they don't understand.
00:05:35
Speaker
So trouble will come to these people. They are like dirt spots that show up when you meet together. They have no problem eating with you. But they are like shepherds who only feed themselves.
00:05:49
Speaker
They are like clouds that the wind blows in, but they don't bring any rain. They are like trees in the fall, but they didn't grow the fruit that they were supposed to have, and they've been pulled up by the roots.

Transition to 1 Peter: Hope and New Life

00:06:06
Speaker
They are like wild waves that toss high in the sea. Everybody sees the waves, and everybody sees the sin that these people should feel bad about.
00:06:19
Speaker
And they are like stars that fly here and there. And they're heading for the deepest, blackest darkness. It's been saved for them.
00:06:31
Speaker
And it will last forever. Long ago, Enoch talked about these men. He said, See, the Lord is coming.
00:06:44
Speaker
Thousands and thousands of his sinless people are with him. And he will judge everybody. He will blame sinful people for the wrong that they have done.
00:06:55
Speaker
And he will blame them for saying bad, angry things about him.
00:07:03
Speaker
These people fuss and fight. And they do whatever sinful things they want to do. And they brag about themselves. They trick other people into liking them.
00:07:15
Speaker
And that way, they can use those people for their own good. Remember what Jesus' apostles said before. When the last days come, people will make fun of others.
00:07:31
Speaker
And they will only do the sinful things they want to do. And these are the people who make you turn against each other.

Living a Holy Life: Teachings from 1 Peter

00:07:40
Speaker
They don't have the spirit.
00:07:43
Speaker
And so they just do whatever they feel like doing. Be kind to people who don't believe, but lead people away from wrong. And be kind to others, but be afraid of sin.
00:07:58
Speaker
And hate even the clothes that people wear when they sin. God can keep you in his kingdom. You will come to him with a heart that he has made clean and sinless.
00:08:14
Speaker
And you will come with great joy. God saves us. He is our only God.
00:08:23
Speaker
God will shine with greatness forever. He rules as the king. He is strong. He is in charge. He comes to us through our Jesus, our Lord.
00:08:37
Speaker
And he lived before all time. He lives now. And he will live for forever. Yes. Amen.
00:08:50
Speaker
From Jude.
00:08:54
Speaker
That's an interesting letter in that it's the only one that references the book of Enoch, which is not considered part of of our accepted Bible. But the writings of Enoch were ah known and accepted prior. They they were well known in in Jewish times, in in these days of the early church even.
00:09:20
Speaker
I've always thought that was interesting.
00:09:24
Speaker
So what we see in the book of Jude is that James is talking about false teachers. And he says that we need to fight for our faith against these false teachers who don't obey God and just tell us that God is kind so we can sin all we want.
00:09:44
Speaker
And they don't even at times believe in Jesus, depending on the false teacher that there may be. But he is our only Lord and King. So we need to fight for our faith.
00:09:56
Speaker
And remember that, as I think it was Paul that told us, that just because Jesus and God have forgiven us, that doesn't mean that we should be taking advantage of ah that forgiveness, and that main meaning that we can just sin whenever we want. We have a responsibility.
00:10:14
Speaker
And we're going to read why 1 Peter 1. I love how these books always have a a connecting theme.
00:10:26
Speaker
when we finish one and start another. 1 Peter 1 Peter also wrote letters, and he wrote this one, to Jesus' followers in many different lands.

Encouragement in Trials and Faith

00:10:40
Speaker
Peter begins this letter by addressing it to the Jews in Diaspora, which is again the the Jews who were living in the dispersion. which would they Actually, they included a lot of the the Jewish people in that. And let's see, he talks about the letter to the people in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.
00:11:09
Speaker
people who were chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus the Messiah.
00:11:21
Speaker
May grace and shalom be multiplied to you. I like how the greetings are similar as well in the different letters, don't you?
00:11:33
Speaker
To the people God chose... Cheer for God! He has been very kind to us. He gave us a new hope and it's all because Jesus came back to life.
00:11:47
Speaker
For us, it's like being born all over again. and now we get what God planned to give his children. And it will never fade away.
00:11:58
Speaker
It will never rot. It will never die. God keeps it in heaven for you. You believe, so God's power is like a shield for you.
00:12:13
Speaker
Everyone will see that he saves you in the end. And you show your great joy about this, even though you're having hard times.
00:12:24
Speaker
And these hard times will last just for a while. Your faith is richer than gold. Gold won't last, but your faith will last, even through hard times.
00:12:41
Speaker
And that will show how important that Jesus is to you. His greatness will shine, and he will come back again, and then people will see him for who he is.
00:12:55
Speaker
You have not seen Jesus, but you love him anyway. And you believe in him. You are full of joy. And it's better than words can tell.
00:13:07
Speaker
It shines in you. And that is because your souls are being saved. And you are getting what you wanted from your faith. So get your minds ready.
00:13:21
Speaker
Control yourselves. Put all your hope into Jesus' kind love, and he will be kind to you when he comes. Be children of God who obey.
00:13:36
Speaker
Don't keep doing the sinful things you wanted to do You wanted to do these things when you didn't understand. But God is clean from sin, so you be clean from sin too.
00:13:52
Speaker
Don't sin in anything that you do. God says in his word to be sinless and holy because I am sinless and holy.

Applying Teachings: Faith and Love

00:14:05
Speaker
God is a father who judges each person and he is fair. He does not treat any person better than another. So live like you belong to heaven, not to earth.
00:14:21
Speaker
and treat God like the important father that he is. The way that your fathers lived did no good, but you were saved from that way of life.
00:14:34
Speaker
And you were not saved because someone paid with silver or gold. You were saved because Jesus paid with his blood. Jesus was clean and sinless and holy God chose Jesus before he made the world.
00:14:55
Speaker
Years later, God sent him to earth. God sent him for you.
00:15:04
Speaker
You believe in God because of Jesus. And God made Jesus come back to life and showed how great Jesus is. And so now you are clean from sin.
00:15:19
Speaker
You have obeyed the truth, so you truly love God's people. So have a deep love for each other and love with your whole heart.
00:15:32
Speaker
It's like you have been born again and you have not been born again into a family that dies. You have been born again into a family that never dies.
00:15:46
Speaker
God's word lives and lasts forever. Isaiah said it this way. God's word stays fresh forever.
00:16:01
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:16:06
Speaker
Wow. I tell you, every day, it's just God's word is just so awesome. Are you excited to hear God's word? I am excited to hear it. I love what we are hearing.
00:16:19
Speaker
Sometimes I feel like it it it might be interpreted that it's very repetitive, that we hear about how Jesus has saved us and that we we are born again because of this and that we are to live differently.
00:16:35
Speaker
But remember, these are letters that were being written to the new church. And so there was no such thing as being reminded of it too often. And so it's a very consistent message as we read through the letters and the the books in the new covenant.
00:16:54
Speaker
It's very consistent. It's very um encouraging to know that there's nothing that can change that. We have been saved.
00:17:05
Speaker
And God has told us that we are to live differently than the rest of the world. Now we have been included in God's family. So God had originally told his Jewish people that they needed to live separately. They needed to live differently. They needed to look different. He told them this way back after he took them out of Egypt.
00:17:29
Speaker
so that you will be my people, and I will be your God. And now we are God's people. And he is our God. And it is the same for us now as it was for them in the sense that we too are to be different from the world.
00:17:50
Speaker
We are to also be sinless and holy because God is sinless and holy. And we are his children. We are part of his spiritual family.
00:18:02
Speaker
He is our father. and so we show that love and that respect for him and we show that we are different when we honor that love and that grace and that forgiveness that he gave us by obeying and living differently from the way the world lives And so it's very important that we be mindful of people who want to come in to our lives or our communities or in our churches or in our congregations who want to come in and say, oh, i don't need to worry about what I'm doing because Jesus jesus saved me. i mean Because God saved me.
00:18:46
Speaker
It doesn't matter anymore what I do because I have been saved once and for all.

Listener Encouragement and Application

00:18:52
Speaker
Yes, but that is disrespectful to the grace and the forgiveness that Jesus has given us. So we need to fight for our faith, as Jude told us, that we need to remember that Jesus expected us to keep on believing and trusting in him.
00:19:11
Speaker
And that means to not take advantage of the forgiveness that we have been granted in our salvation.
00:19:20
Speaker
So that's our main application today. Our daily application is that we are set apart and that we need to be sinless and holy as God is sinless and holy.
00:19:34
Speaker
I'm going to read that out of our big Bible here today, too, because I like the way it says it says it in our big Bible, too. Peter says, brace your minds for action.
00:19:48
Speaker
Keep your balance and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus the Messiah. Like obedient children, do not be shaped by the cravings you had formerly in your ignorance.
00:20:06
Speaker
And instead, just like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in everything you do. For it is written,
00:20:18
Speaker
saints you shall be, for I am holy. God calls us saints. If you call on him as father, then the one who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, then live out the time of your journeying in reverent fear.
00:20:41
Speaker
And now I'm skipping down to verse 22. You have been purified. Now that you have purified your souls in obedience to the truth, leading to sincere brotherly love, love one another fervently from a pure heart.
00:21:01
Speaker
Wow. For you have been born again, not from perishable seed, but from imperishable through the living and enduring word of God.
00:21:15
Speaker
We are to be sinless and holy because God is sinless and holy. i love that. And then the world will know that we are Jesus' followers by our fervent love that Peter is encouraging us to have today.
00:21:33
Speaker
Jesus said that the world will know that you are my followers by your love for each other. And if you love me, then you if will love one another.
00:21:47
Speaker
You will obey me. And the command that he gives us is to love one another.
00:21:54
Speaker
So it's very important that we are loving one another. And Jude, he even mentions at the end of his chapter, of his letter here, he says, Be kind to others.
00:22:10
Speaker
Be kind to people who don't believe. Lead people away from wrong. Be kind to others, but be afraid of sin.
00:22:20
Speaker
So even Jude is letting us know that we need to be kind to others. And that's important because these people were teaching that they didn't need to do any of these things. It is still important that we are kind to others, that we are loving and that we are set apart.
00:22:41
Speaker
So we need to fight for our faith and not let it be run over by popular thinking of ah it doesn't matter what we do because Jesus has saved us or because God is kind and we don't need to worry about that.

Closing Prayer and Final Encouragement

00:22:58
Speaker
He's just all nothing but kindness. There are consequences for when we sin. And Peter reminds us about that, that even those who were saved,
00:23:08
Speaker
They turned a what around and chose not to believe in God right after God had saved them in Egypt. And so God destroyed those people. So we need to be sure that we are not stepping away, but instead we are fighting for our faith.
00:23:25
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are encouraged today to be strong in your faith and to not let anybody tell you that it is not important to try and do our best and to live differently from the world, but to be in the world while not being of it.
00:23:43
Speaker
And I hope that you are. Let's see. I love the the prayers that they gave us today. So we're going to I'm going to pray those prayers over you today.
00:23:59
Speaker
Where did we read that prayer?
00:24:11
Speaker
The beginning of the letters, both the beginning of Peter and the beginning of Jude. As we leave to today, before we head off on our way, I first want to encourage you to please click your light button. I have not mentioned that recently, but our light button looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share or a subscribe or a follow.
00:24:34
Speaker
And we are looking to help spread the word about reading God's word. So when we do that, it helps this event be seen or heard by more people so that hopefully people are hearing God's word and are encouraged by it and are taking the time to read God's word on their own too.
00:24:53
Speaker
I always want to encourage you that if you are hungry for more of God's word, to head up your big Bible with what we've read today. And then you can catch any fine details that you feel would be interesting for you as you continue on in your reading. If there is something that our little bit of a shortened version did not cover.
00:25:14
Speaker
And so as I leave today, i want to wish you that may mercy and shalom and love. be multiplied to you. Thank you so much for joining me for today's December 7th daily reading. And I hope that you are full of mercy and shalom and God's grace and love until we meet again for our next daily reading.
00:25:42
Speaker
Have a very blessed day.
