Today we will finish reading Paul's 1st letter to Timothy while Timothy was working in Ephesus- 1 Timothy Chapter 6:1-12, 15-21. We will also begin the letter Paul wrote to Titus. Today's reading will cover Titus Chapter 1:4-16 and Chapter 2:1-14.

Today reading and discussion will be about the fact that we cannot love or serve both God and money.  Jesus himself taught us about this, telling us that we cannot serve two masters: we cannot serve both money and God. Fortunately we have God's kind love, which teaches us to say no to things the world loves, like money. Paul reminds us today that we didn't come into the world with anything and we won't be able to take anything with us when we leave this world, either! So we need to be happy to just have food and clothes.

Introduction and Gratitude

00:00:02
Speaker
Good day, everybody. Today is December 2nd. My name is Robin. I'm with In the Family Way Coaching. And together, you and i we are here for our daily reading as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been thankfully written by Karen Henley.
00:00:20
Speaker
I am very thankful to Karen Henley for having written this Bible. And if you've been around for a while, you will already know. But if you have not been around for a while, then you may not know that Karen Henley is the author of The Beginner's Bible.
00:00:34
Speaker
And it tells us about that on the cover of our book. And there's also, ah it also talks about it actually on the back cover as well.
00:00:45
Speaker
So that's how I know. hu Well, I trust that you are having a fabulous day, whatever day you are getting around to watching or listening to today's daily

Importance of Practicing Teachings

00:00:56
Speaker
reading. And I trust that you are growing in the knowledge of the truth and having opportunities brought into your life by God to practice our daily applications of what we've been reading about.
00:01:08
Speaker
I know God definitely has a way of bringing the daily application into my life, and I trust that he is doing the same with you. We just can't learn unless we actually have opportunities to practice what we are learning.
00:01:22
Speaker
Isn't that frustrating sometimes? so Wouldn't you just like to read about it and then acknowledge it and then learn it and then have it just happen? But God tells us that he exercises kindness and justice and love um as he rules the earth. And he's exercising that. He's exercising.
00:01:48
Speaker
And I think about that as being like a practice. When we exercise, it's practicing. And not that God is not perfect already, but he is using his skills. He is always choosing to do so. And so we have to do the same thing. We don't just magically wake up one day and suddenly, everything is so easy. and We have to practice these skills.
00:02:14
Speaker
Well, if you are using your commitment calendar, it's time to get that out. It's time to get your sticker ready, your crayon, your marker, your pencil, your pen, whatever you are using to cross off those days.
00:02:27
Speaker
Because you know what's going to happen? Yep, we're about to read the Bible today.

Reading from 1 Timothy and Titus

00:02:36
Speaker
today we are going to be completing the letter that Paul wrote to Timothy, the first one. And we're going to complete that with chapter six of first Timothy. And then we are going to be reading the letter, starting the letter, I should say, to Titus that Paul wrote.
00:02:53
Speaker
And we're going to read chapters one and two of the letter Titus. it pretty short letter. i think tomorrow is when we will finish that letter. I think there are only three chapters in Titus.
00:03:06
Speaker
Yes, and then we will go back to, we will start reading 2 Timothy again tomorrow, along after we finish Titus tomorrow. Well, today we are going to be reading about the fact that we cannot serve both God and money.
00:03:22
Speaker
We cannot love them both. Jesus taught us about this himself. He said, you cannot serve two masters. You will love the one and hate the other or hate the one and love the other.
00:03:33
Speaker
We cannot love both God and money. So let's dive into our last chapter of 1 Timothy, and we will start hearing about that.

Advice on Leadership and Godliness

00:03:48
Speaker
So as Paul continues in his letter to Timothy, says, I want to come remind us where we were yesterday, where we left off in chapter 5. Paul was telling Timothy not to be too fast to put his hands on people to pray. He was talking about the laying on of hands.
00:04:06
Speaker
And the laying on of hands they had done as they were. commissioning people. So that's what Paul is referring to because he had been talking about the fact that leaders should not be new believers. So he is telling Peter not to, or telling Timothy rather, to not be too fast to lay his hands on people to commission new leaders.
00:04:25
Speaker
And don't be a part of other people's sins to keep your heart clean. And then Paul says today, are you a servant? Then care about your master with all of your heart.
00:04:40
Speaker
And that way, people will say good things about God. And notice how Paul doesn't say that people will say good things about the servant or good things about the master. But by doing so, people would say good things about God.
00:04:57
Speaker
Now, let's say your master believes in Jesus. That does not mean that you act like he is less important. Instead, you serve him better.
00:05:09
Speaker
And that's because the person you serve is special to you. He is your brother. So teach the people these things. I want to remind us too that although Paul is saying servant and master here, that we have discussed the fact that we can replace the word servant and master with like employer and employee.
00:05:32
Speaker
So if you everybody has a boss of some sort at some point in their time in their life, and that boss sometimes is the teacher, that boss can be ah an actual boss of the um place where we work. And we have many managers where I am. And several of the managers there have faith in Jesus. So they are my brother and my sisters.
00:05:58
Speaker
And what Paul is talking about here is that we don't think about them as being less important. Instead, we serve them better.
00:06:10
Speaker
And so i know that I take those opportunities serve Make sure that I am obeying, not just because I have to, but because I am choosing to, because God has placed this person over me.
00:06:24
Speaker
And also at the times when I have had disagreements with um a couple of the the managers, i have disagreed.
00:06:36
Speaker
been reminded by God that these are my brothers and my sisters. And so we are to have reconciliation between us. And so I have made special effort to make sure that I reconciled with them so that there is no difficulty there.
00:06:52
Speaker
So we can, that's just a way that we can remember that it's not just talking about servants and masters and where we think that that's not applicable today, because it is absolutely applicable today.
00:07:07
Speaker
Paul goes on to tell Peter, or i keep wanting to say Peter, goes on to tell Timothy that what if people teach

Warnings Against False Teachings

00:07:15
Speaker
lies? He's referring to the leaders there or the the people there in Ephesus where he is working.
00:07:24
Speaker
What if the people there teach lies? What if they do not believe the teaching about Jesus? Then they are proud and they don't understand anything.
00:07:36
Speaker
They want to fuss and fight about words. And all of this brings angry talking. These people want what others have.
00:07:48
Speaker
And they think being good, our big Bible says, they think godliness is a way to get rich. But here is what is best, Paul says.
00:08:02
Speaker
It's being good and happy with exactly what you have. We did not bring anything into the world with us and we're not going to take anything out with us when we leave either.
00:08:16
Speaker
So we should be happy to have food and clothes. Those are the things we need. Now people who want to get rich, they have problems.
00:08:28
Speaker
It's like getting into a trap. And they get pulled into doing wrong things. And they begin wanting foolish things. They want things that end up hurting them.
00:08:43
Speaker
Loving money brings all kinds of trouble. Some people wanted to money so badly that they stopped believing in Jesus.
00:08:55
Speaker
And then they had lots of problems. And that made them sad. Now you are a man of God, Timothy, so run away from all of these sinful things.
00:09:06
Speaker
And instead, go for what is right. Go for what is godly. Go for believing. Go for love. Try to keep your faith even in hard times.
00:09:21
Speaker
And try to be kind. Sometimes it's hard to keep believing. Try hard to believe. And fight for it. Fight a good fight.
00:09:33
Speaker
Hold on to life that lasts forever. This is what God chose for you. And this is true for us today, too. That is what God has chosen for you.
00:09:49
Speaker
God is the only ruler. He is the King of Kings. He is the Lord of Lords. Only God never dies. He lives in light that we can't even get near.
00:10:04
Speaker
And nobody has seen him. And nobody can see him. He will be called great forever. He will have power forever. Yes.
00:10:15
Speaker
Amen. now tell rich people not to be proud. Tell them not to hope in the those riches that they have. Because riches can be here today and gone tomorrow.
00:10:30
Speaker
So tell them to hope in God. Because he is rich.

Appointing Leaders in Crete

00:10:35
Speaker
And he gives us everything to enjoy. Tell rich people to do good things.
00:10:43
Speaker
And tell them to give a lot. That way they will really be making riches for themselves. And these riches bring life that is truly life.
00:10:58
Speaker
Timothy, take care of what God gave you and stay away from talk that is not godly. Stay away from ideas that are against God. People say that these ideas are the right things to know.
00:11:14
Speaker
And some people believe these ideas and then they stop believing in God. But I pray that God's kind love will be with you. From Paul.
00:11:28
Speaker
Now, you would think that that would be all about loving money. But you know what? Paul talks about it in the letter that he writes to Titus as well.
00:11:41
Speaker
And I don't think that's any coincidence. So let's go ahead and begin our first chapter of the the letter that Paul wrote to Titus. says, Paul also wrote a letter to Titus who was working in Crete.
00:11:55
Speaker
Dear Titus, I left you in Crete. I wanted you to take care of God's work that wasn't finished there. And I wanted you to choose leaders for the church in every town.
00:12:08
Speaker
A church leader must not do anything to be blamed for. He must have only one wife. His children should believe. And they shouldn't be wild.
00:12:20
Speaker
They should obey him. God trusts leaders to do his work. And those who are leaders over there cannot be bossy. They shouldn't get angry too fast.
00:12:32
Speaker
And they should not get drunk. And they shouldn't be mean. And they should not try to get money by tricking others. Instead, they should welcome people into their houses.
00:12:46
Speaker
And they should love what is good and right. They should control themselves, and they should be good and right. Their hearts should be sinless, and they should keep their lives in order.
00:13:03
Speaker
Leaders should keep believing God's messages the way that they learned it, and then they can help others grow stronger by teaching God's way. They can tell people what is wrong with turning against God.
00:13:18
Speaker
and Lots of people turn against God and they talk a lot and they lie and they tear apart whole families by teaching wrong things. They do it to get rich.
00:13:33
Speaker
One of their own prophets said it this way, People from Crete always lie. They are sinful and mean. They are lazy and they eat too much.
00:13:46
Speaker
And it's true. So tell them they are wrong. Tell them firmly, and then they can believe what is right. Do not listen to the stories that Jewish people make up.
00:14:00
Speaker
Don't listen to the laws of people who go against the truth. And when your heart is clean from sin, everything is clean.
00:14:11
Speaker
But some people's minds are dirty from sin. And they say they know God. but the way that they act shows that they do not know him.
00:14:23
Speaker
They are not good to be around and they don't obey. They cannot do anything good.
00:14:31
Speaker
you should teach what is right. Teach older men not to overdo things. They should act right so that people can speak well of them and they should control themselves.
00:14:45
Speaker
They should have a strong faith and love others. They should keep believing even in hard times. Teach the older women to show that they look up to God.
00:15:01
Speaker
Teach older women to show that they look up to God, that they should not say bad things about others. They should not drink too much wine. They should teach good things.
00:15:13
Speaker
And older women can teach younger women how to love their husbands. And they can teach them how to love their children. And they can teach self-control.
00:15:25
Speaker
They can teach how to have a heart that is clean from sin. And they can teach how to work at home. They can teach how to let husbands lead.
00:15:36
Speaker
And that way, nobody will say bad things about God's word. Help the young men grow stronger in self-control. Show them how.
00:15:48
Speaker
Do good things and teach truth. Mean what you say say what you mean. And then nobody can blame you for what you say.
00:16:01
Speaker
Teach servants that they should always obey their masters. They should try to make their masters happy. Teach them not to talk back to their masters.
00:16:12
Speaker
And they should not steal from their masters. Their master should be able to trust them. And that way the teaching about God will look good.
00:16:24
Speaker
God's kind love saves people. It's for everyone. His kind love teaches us to say no to bad things.
00:16:35
Speaker
It teaches us to say no to the things that the world loves. It teaches us to have self-control. God's kind love teaches us to do what is right.
00:16:49
Speaker
And it teaches us how to be good. We wait and we hope for Jesus to come again. He died to save us from sin.
00:17:00
Speaker
And he died to make his people clean and spotless. He wants his people to belong just to him. And he wants them to be ready to do good things.
00:17:14
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Temptation of Wealth vs. Godliness

00:17:20
Speaker
We had so much good reading today. Oh my goodness. I'm so glad that there was a an overarching theme of... if We cannot serve both God and money as we read through both of it because we could have otherwise I could have just talked about absolutely everything that we were reading about.
00:17:40
Speaker
I especially love how we are supposed to ah to teach the younger generation that older women are supposed to teach the younger women and Titus, he was supposed to teach the young men.
00:17:52
Speaker
We call that discipleship when we are teaching like that. Well, let's talk about that we cannot serve both God and money. Let's head back to our letter to Timothy.
00:18:11
Speaker
and let's see.
00:18:15
Speaker
People think that godliness is a way to get rich or that being good is a way to get rich. People think that if they do something ministry related, that they're going to get rich.
00:18:33
Speaker
And that's because we do see people even now with what we might call super churches, and they have a lot of followers and they have a lot of money from it.
00:18:43
Speaker
They have a lot of donations. They receive a lot of money from that. And so it can look very tempting. to people who are not in that position to say, hey, I can do that. But their motivation is to make money.
00:19:00
Speaker
And we have to be careful because it's not about making money. God will take care of the of the worker. cuts Jesus told us that the worker is worth his wages. And as Paul told us yesterday, let the ox eat while it is working or while it is plowing.
00:19:19
Speaker
And that is not the goal, though, is to just eat or to just make money. That is not the goal. The goal is to be working for God. Not everybody is called to be a leader.
00:19:34
Speaker
And ministry is actually very tough because it it requires a lot of time. And it's not something where we should expect to become rich from it.
00:19:48
Speaker
And it's it's good if we don't, because otherwise, like Paul was saying about how we need to make sure that leaders are not new believers, because otherwise they can become proud. Our big Bible says puffed up.
00:20:03
Speaker
And we want to make sure that that doesn't happen, because loving money, Paul tells us, is the root of evil It makes people want more and more things.
00:20:16
Speaker
And that's not what the goal is. The goal is to be happy with what we have. Because it doesn't matter whether we bank a little bit of money throughout our life or a lot of money.
00:20:27
Speaker
Either way, we can't take it with us when we go. Even if we're raptured, we can't take it with us. You remember the story about Lot and his wife. And Lot's wife turned back to look.
00:20:40
Speaker
And she was turned into a pillar of salt. We cannot look back while we were while we are on our way out. it's It's not going to let us bring anything with us.
00:20:52
Speaker
We need to just be on our way.
00:20:59
Speaker
Paul tells us here that we should be happy. with to have food and clothes, because those are the things we actually need. And Jesus tells us not to be anxious about those things, because God knows the things that we need.
00:21:15
Speaker
And he will provide those for us when we seek him first. So our goal is to remember to seek God first, because we cannot serve both him and money. Paul tells us here that wanting money, people, some people want money so badly that they stop believing in Jesus.
00:21:35
Speaker
And they have lots of problems. And that makes them very sad. It's not a happy existence to do that. Paul tells us to go for what is godly.
00:21:47
Speaker
Go for believing. Go for love. Go for what is right. Try to keep your faith even in hard times.
00:21:58
Speaker
Paul tells Timothy to tell the rich people not to be proud and not to hope in those riches. Because even if we do have a lot of money and it's not related to ministry in any way, that riches can be here today and gone tomorrow.
00:22:16
Speaker
Another way of saying that is that the Lord gives and the Lord takes away. We don't know how long it's going to last.
00:22:25
Speaker
We need to have our hope in God because he is rich. He gives us everything to enjoy. And Jesus's riches that he pours out are different riches from those that we receive here on earth.
00:22:40
Speaker
His riches last forever.
00:22:44
Speaker
Paul tells us to stay, let's see.
00:22:53
Speaker
Oh, I did. i I already spoke about that. Let's see.
00:22:58
Speaker
Where is our other?
00:23:03
Speaker
In Titus,
00:23:12
Speaker
Paul tells us that God's love is for everyone, and his love teaches us to say no to bad things. So money itself is is not bad.
00:23:27
Speaker
It's loving money that is bad. So God's kind love teaches us to say no to things that are bad, like loving money. God's love teaches us to say no to the things the world loves. And the world loves money.
00:23:45
Speaker
The world is always telling us that we need to buy more things. We need to subscribe to this. We need to subscribe to that. We need to buy this and we need to have that and and go for it. You deserve it You earned it. You deserve it.
00:24:02
Speaker
And that's the world's way. So God's kind love, however, teaches us to do what is right and to have self-control.

Rejecting Worldly Desires

00:24:12
Speaker
It teaches us to say no to the things that the world loves. And it teaches us how to be good.
00:24:20
Speaker
God wants his people to belong just to him. That means that he doesn't want us to try to belong to money because that's what ends up happening. We think that we are possessing money, but it ends up that money possesses us.
00:24:35
Speaker
That's the way it works out. and God tells us that he is a jealous God. He wants us to worship nothing else or in no one else but him because he is the one true God.
00:24:50
Speaker
And he wants us to be ready to do good things. And if we are too busy focusing on making money, making money, making money, getting more things, getting more things, getting more things, then we are not focusing on doing the good things that God has sent for us to do.
00:25:08
Speaker
He has created good works ahead of time for us to do. And we can't do those things if we are so busy being consumed with the worldly things. So I hope that you feel encouraged to today.
00:25:22
Speaker
And if we need to be, to feel convicted, to remember that we cannot serve both God and money. We need to remember to put our priorities straight, to seek first the kingdom of God, and then God will take care of everything that we need.
00:25:39
Speaker
Jesus tells us that God knows what we need. And that even the flowers of the field were they were not as, are more beautiful than Solomon with all of his splendor.
00:25:52
Speaker
Even Solomon with all of his splendor was not clothed as beautifully as the flowers of the field. And if the flowers of the field are taken care of, how much more so will God take care of us and provide for us what we need than when we ask him?

Listener Shout-outs and Engagement

00:26:12
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me. and Before we go, i want to give a shout out to a couple of people. i would like to say hello to Suzanne. Thank you so much for commenting on our audio version on the um the ah YouTube music. I'm so glad that you enjoyed that prayer. Paul has wonderful prayers, and i I like praying those prayers. So thank you so much for telling me that you appreciated the prayers that we were incorporating from Paul's reading.
00:26:43
Speaker
I love that. I love the connection that you make with me there to be able to comment and shout out to me. So a shout out for you too, Suzanne. We said hello to Ram yesterday. i want to say hello to him again today. and I would like to say hello to my friends at work.
00:27:02
Speaker
You know who you are. Hopefully we have Maurice who is listening and maybe Andrea and let's see, maybe Saba is listening. So thank you so much for joining me. And Mike, I almost forgot about you, Mike. Thank you for listening recently. You were showing me today that you were checking it out and I hope that you are enjoying it and that you are hungry for more of God's word and are enjoying the the reading that we are having this year.
00:27:31
Speaker
Thank you also for your ah feedback and that you thought that it was easy to understand and that you like the way that it is done. I'm glad that you enjoy it.
00:27:42
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are finding that God has lit your light today. i have not mentioned this recently, but I would like to encourage you to click your light button. That light button looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart, but really it's our light button because we are the light of the world. And we are here to shine our light brightly with Jesus's light.
00:28:07
Speaker
And we can help other people be able to hear God's word when we click that light button. It has nothing to do with me. It has to do with metrics. When we click that follow, that share, that subscribe, that up with the thumb or the heart, it helps it to be heard or seen by more people.

Sharing and Applying Daily Lessons

00:28:28
Speaker
And the goal here this year is to spread the word about reading God's word because every single day has daily application.
00:28:38
Speaker
No matter where you pick up in the Bible, it has daily application. And so I hope that you are learning how to read God's word with the mindset of seeing what your daily application is. Even when you leave this event, when we complete it and you are reading on your own, i hope that you are learning how to read the Bible and to see yourself.
00:29:02
Speaker
in what is going on. We're meant to identify with what we are reading, to see ourselves in the reading. Sometimes it is things that we need to do. Sometimes it's things we need to not do.
00:29:15
Speaker
And a lot of times it's recognizing what God is doing and how this applies in our life today. So I hope that you are feeling very encouraged in your in your reading and in your listening with this event i know it encourages me and i know i'm the one reading it but uh that's one of the reasons why i wanted to do this event why god put it on my heart is that every time i would i would be reading and i love to read god's word i would see the daily application that he was telling me and i just i wanted to tell people about it i was like wow, this is so amazing. And so to to do this event has been an incredible experience for me because I feel like I've really been able to connect with God's word this year.
00:30:03
Speaker
And I hope that the same is true for you. So thank you for joining me, whether you have been following along on your podcast or on the video somewhere. Thank you so much. And if you know somebody who could benefit from hearing today's reading, kindly share that with them and help us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:30:23
Speaker
If you are hungry for more of God's word, I encourage you to head up your big Bible and check out where we read from today, which included the last chapter of 1 Timothy, which was chapter 6, as well as Titus chapters 1 and 2.
00:30:39
Speaker
And until I see you again tomorrow or whatever day you pick up with your daily reading, I hope that you have a fantastic, blessed day. And that once again, that God is giving you application opportunities in your own life to be faced with situations where you need to remember what we are learning about and then apply it and then behave accordingly.
00:31:05
Speaker
So I will see you again next time as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. Have a great day.
