Today we will complete Paul's letter to the Colossians with Chapters 3 and 4.

In our reading today Paul will describe for us what being loving toward others does and does not look like.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the need for knowing what love does and does not look like so that we are able to spot lies and fake religion that tries to take us away from our true faith in Jesus. Knowing what loving behavior does and does not look like will also help us understand that there is a difference between rules and the description of what loving behavior is and isn't. Rules are "Don't do this. Don't do that" with consequences for not following those rules. Following God and Jesus can LOOK like we are trying to follow a lot of rules when really we are learning about right and wrong behavior- what being loving does and does not look like- so that we can base our choices for our behaviors on whether or not the behavior we are questioning falls into the category of loving someone or not loving someone.  We are to imitate God, who IS LOVE and ALWAYS acts with love. Jesus, as we have learned, affirmed that all of the "law" can be summed up in loving God with all of our heart, mind, and soul, and then also to love one another. Paul's letter to the Colossians is full of excellent examples of how to put away the old behaviors and adopt new behaviors of love.

Hello, hello, everybody. Today is November 24th. My name is Robin. I am with In the Family Way Coaching, and I am super excited and glad that you are here with me.
00:00:15
Speaker
Thank you for joining me as we read our daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:24
Speaker
I am so excited for how this event has been going. There are more of you now than there were at the beginning of the year. So I am super excited to see that God is spreading the word about reading his word. And that's why I'm always so excited that there are more of you here is that he gives me the privilege of seeing this happen. I just love it. Thank you so much. And a couple of shout outs. I haven't done shout outs in a little while. I don't know all of you. There are many of you I do not know, but I have met a lot of you and that's why some of you are here. so i want to say hello and welcome to Andrea. I met you at work yesterday. Well, I met you before, but we spoke about it yesterday. i just knew that you were my sister and we started talking and I asked you about it because the Holy Spirit just really put that on my heart to talk with you. And I am super excited that we had that opportunity together.
00:01:21
Speaker
I would like to say hello to Maurice. I haven't said hello to you in a while. Thank you so much for being here, Maurice. Thank you for joining this event and hearing God's word.
00:01:33
Speaker
And let's see. Oh, Susanna, I think it's Suzanne or Susanna. You left me a comment a couple of weeks ago on the audio version about my necklace. And I forgot to say hello to you. i know I commented back on the comment, but I did want to also say hello and thank you for being here. And I am just super glad to know that you are part of this event.
00:01:57
Speaker
So thank you. I'm so glad God brought us together. And let's

Preparation and Themes in Colossians

00:02:01
Speaker
see. um Who else? Oh, well, you know what who I haven't said hello to in a while? I know I mentioned you guys, but I have not said hello to the kids lately. So I want to say hello to Pearl. I want to say hello to Forrest. I want to say hello to Jedi. And I want to say hello to Diamond.
00:02:20
Speaker
Usually I start with Diamond's name, but this time I started from Pearl. ah And hello to Julie. And Helen, I don't know if you've been watching it all lately, but if you are watching, hello to you. God loves you. He still has purpose for you. He really does. He loves you and you have purpose with him every single day.
00:02:42
Speaker
so I am so glad that you are still with us. Well, guess what time it is? That's right. It's time to take out your calendar. If you are using stickers, if you are using crayons, if you are using a pen or a pencil, whatever you are using to cross off those days, then go ahead and get it out because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:03:07
Speaker
We are reading in Paul's letter to the Colossians. Today we will finish that short letter. It only has four chapters in it. And yesterday we were talking about some difficulties that the Colossians were having with people trying to give them human rules. And Paul was telling them to remember that they are already saved in Jesus. So they don't need to worry about trying to follow all of these human rules. None of those things would help them.
00:03:34
Speaker
We talked about the fact that Jesus gave us really two rules. And he said that all of the law, even before he gave us the new rule about loving each other, he says that when really it wasn't even new, it was just rewarded a little bit.
00:03:49
Speaker
It really has always been, for the most part, that there are two rules. And that is to love God and to love others. And Jesus wants us to love each other very much.
00:04:01
Speaker
Not just a little bit, but to love each other very much. Because we are one in him. And we talked about the fact that it can look like there are a lot of rules for us to follow because, you know, we have like, do not hurt each other, don't kill each other, don't do this. And so it sounds like those are a lot of rules to follow. But I asked God about that and Today, Paul prays a prayer and he asks for this prayer to be actually prayed for him. And I also prayed for this prayer for myself. And that's that I would be able to communicate what God wants to hear us to say clearly.
00:04:40
Speaker
Let me see.

Understanding Love versus Rules

00:04:41
Speaker
How does Paul word that? Paul words it. It says, pray that I can tell about the mystery of of Jesus.
00:04:53
Speaker
clearly that's how I need to tell it so these things can seem like a mystery they can be complicated they can be difficult and so and it can seem like we're contradicting what we say we say well there's not a lot of rules but then there's not man-made rules but there's people there's god rules and but there's really not a lot of rules so which is it is there a little bit of rules is there are no rules is there a lot of rules and And what God showed me, what he wanted me to communicate clearly, is that what we're going to be seeing is that we are not necessarily talking about rules when we talk about remember not to do this and don't do that.
00:05:31
Speaker
We are actually describing love and what it is and what it is not. And so when we have all of these different things as to don't be angry, make sure you forgive one another, those sound like rules.
00:05:48
Speaker
But if we look at them closely, what we're actually doing when we read about these things is we're looking almost like with a magnifying glass or even a microscope to see what love is and what love is not. We're looking at what love looks like.
00:06:08
Speaker
and we're looking at what love does not look like. It's kind of like when you are a banker, you are a teller at a bank. You have to know what real money looks like so that when fake money comes in, you can spot it. We call fake fake money counterfeit bills.
00:06:28
Speaker
And so what we're looking to do in our year this year is to look at what love does look like And that's what Paul is telling them, is that he's telling us these things because he doesn't want us to believe lies.
00:06:44
Speaker
He wants us to realize what true love is in Jesus, what our true faith is, so that when other people try to come around and say, well, you know, you need to be doing this too, we can spot that as a counterfeit.
00:06:59
Speaker
We need to be able to discern that. that the spirits, and that's a fancy way of saying spotting a counterfeit. We need to be able to be very familiar and understanding of what love does look like so that when we are presented with lies, with things that are not true, then we will be able to spot them and not follow those things.
00:07:28
Speaker
That's what we're doing. So we have to become very familiar with what love does look like and what love does not look like. Because that is how we know whether we are doing something that is imitating Jesus and God or whether something is not imitating Jesus and God. And since we are to be imitators of God, we have to look at the examples. No one has seen God, but we have Jesus. And then we have the apostles who imitated him.
00:07:59
Speaker
as his disciples. And so we have these writings in the Bible. And so as a, like a, like a chain reaction, we become part of that chain.
00:08:11
Speaker
And Paul is going to explain to us today that everything we do, we need to do it for Jesus. And we want to be sure that we are showing people everywhere, whether they believe or not believe, that Jesus is in us.
00:08:28
Speaker
And we do this by displaying what love truly is and not by displaying what love is not. So I wanted to make that clear for us because I i wasn't sure it was entirely clear.

Clarifications and Thanksgiving Connection

00:08:42
Speaker
Last night, I did ah yesterday's recording very late in the day. And sometimes when I do it very late in the day, I'm not sure that my words are coming out well.
00:08:52
Speaker
I feel like I struggle with my words more. And of course, i I have mentioned that the Holy Spirit gives me words, but I feel like my mind is not as clear as it is when I absolutely make the time to do it in the morning before I go to work.
00:09:07
Speaker
no matter how late it makes me in my work day. So I wanted to be sure that we clarified that. And I'm so thankful that that God gave me the words for that today. So with conversation,
00:09:20
Speaker
idea in mind and with that understanding of of rules and and love let's head into colossians chapters three and four and complete the letter oh and one more thing my mouth always wants to say that the that the book of acts and because we just finished that the other day and you may not have heard me say it i always want to keep saying matthew wrote the book of acts i don't know what is going on with my mouth i have done that so many times but it was luke So Luke has been with Paul. And so ah Luke was mentioned in today's book at the end because we know whenever they have a an ending signature for their letters, they always want to be sure and give their greetings from everybody. And he mentioned Luke. And I was like, Luke was with him. And I'm like, well, I thought it was Matthew. ah I'm always getting the name wrong. So I've corrected that multiple times. So if you ever hear me say Matthew, Please forgive me.
00:10:16
Speaker
my My mouth wants to say Matthew. I'm not that fabulous with names. I don't know why. I've always struggled with names and I mentioned that before too, but I'm not trying deliberately to give incorrect information or to teach something wrong. I'm just saying the wrong name. And and it may not matter who the name is, but I do want to be accurate as to who it is that's actually with Paul.
00:10:39
Speaker
And it was not Matthew. It was Luke. Alrighty, so here we go. Chapter 3 of Colossians. I'm going to read a little bit out of chapter 2 so that we know where we left off because this is a continuation of the thought that we left off with at the end of chapter 2.
00:11:00
Speaker
It is as if you died with Jesus. You died to the world. So why go by its rules? It says, meaning the world, the world says, don't touch this. Don't taste that. Don't hold on to this.
00:11:16
Speaker
These are human rules and they will not last for forever. And they look like wise rules and they tell people how to work hard with their bodies and they tell when and where to worship.
00:11:28
Speaker
But they are not any good at keeping people from sinning. Now you have been made alive with Jesus. So think about things that are from Jesus instead of things that are from the world.
00:11:43
Speaker
He is above, sitting at God's right side. Think about things that are above. Think about, do not think about things of the earth because you died to the world.
00:11:57
Speaker
And now your life is with Jesus in God. And Jesus is your whole life. Someday Jesus will appear in all of his greatness.
00:12:09
Speaker
Guess what? You will be there too. There are some things that show and that the world is still in you. We need to let those things die.
00:12:21
Speaker
Those things are things like using sex in the wrong way, having a heart that is not clean from sin, wanting to do wrong, wanting more and more things, which when we want more and more things, we call that materialism.
00:12:39
Speaker
It's just like worshiping idols. And God will get angry because of these things. You used to live that way, but now you need to get rid of that way of life.
00:12:52
Speaker
Get rid of strong anger. Get rid of hate. Get rid of saying bad things about others. Get rid of dirty talk.
00:13:04
Speaker
Do not lie to each other. Your old self is gone. And you have a new self now. You are being made like new so that you will be like who? That's right, Jesus.
00:13:22
Speaker
And it doesn't matter if you're Jewish or if you're not. And it doesn't matter if you're a slave or you're a free person because Jesus is the important one.
00:13:34
Speaker
And God chose you. That's right, you. you you you, you, you, and you to be his chosen people. You are very special to God and he loves you dearly.
00:13:50
Speaker
So be kind. Don't be proud and treat other people with care and be glad to wait. Oh, that's a tough one. Be glad to wait.
00:14:03
Speaker
Work with each other. Forgive each other. Forgive like Jesus forgave you. and more than all of this,
00:14:15
Speaker
Love each other. Because love will help us do all of these good things together. Is love going to help us do all of these things separate from one another?
00:14:28
Speaker
no Together. All of you are like parts of one body. And God wants you to live together in peace. So let Jesus' peace control your heart.
00:14:44
Speaker
And be thankful too.

Roles and Responsibilities in Faith

00:14:47
Speaker
Isn't that a timely message since Thanksgiving is this week? Let Jesus's words live in you like riches and teach each other with wise thinking.
00:15:01
Speaker
Sing psalms and songs from your spirit and be thankful to God in your hearts. Do everything in Jesus's name. It might be what you say, it might be what you do, but whatever you do, do it in Jesus's name while giving thanks to God.
00:15:23
Speaker
So if you are a wife, let your husband lead because it's the right thing to do in Jesus's kingdom. And if you are a husband, then be sure and love your wife and do not be hard on her.
00:15:37
Speaker
Children, always obey your mother and father because that will make Jesus happy. and fathers, do not frustrate or upset your children so much that they just want to give up.
00:15:53
Speaker
servants obey your human masters now we can think that this doesn't apply to us because we are not servants or slaves however everybody is subject to authority authority from bosses authority from government authority from the president authority as police officers so I wanted us to think about this in that term so that we don't just brush off what we are hearing.
00:16:21
Speaker
Everybody has somebody above them. Nobody is autonomous where they are in control of everything. And there's no anarchy. We are not each self-judging and mean self-righteous where we don't have any law.
00:16:38
Speaker
Obey your human masters or those who are above you, I'm adding that of my own, and do whatever they say. And do not obey just when they're looking.
00:16:50
Speaker
Do not obey just to be a people pleaser or to make people treat you nicely. Obey with a good, true heart. Obey showing that you look up to Jesus.
00:17:05
Speaker
Because remember, it's about what's in our heart. It's not about the actions. We can look like a whitewashed wall. That means to be doing things on the outside. But on the inside, we're really thinking nasty thoughts about people. And and we don't want to do that.
00:17:21
Speaker
That's behaving outwardly, but not changing the heart. And guess what? It's not the actions that God is looking at. It's our heart. So Paul is explaining that it's how we do these with the intent that we do them. We need to deliberately be thinking about the fact that we are under people and we need to obey the people that we are under out of respect. And because this is what God wants us to do, not with, i'm okay, fine, I'll do it just because they're here and I have to do it and I'm supposed to do it.
00:17:52
Speaker
That's not what a true heart of obedience is Our true heart of obedience willingly obeys and submits. We call that submission because that is what the right thing to do is.
00:18:07
Speaker
And it shows that we are actually looking up to Jesus because he is also over us, over all of us. And whatever you do, do it with your whole heart and do it as if you were working for Jesus. So when you are obeying that person that you would wish you were not having to obey, do it for him and do it as though it was actually Jesus who was there telling you what to do.
00:18:35
Speaker
Because Jesus has good things planned for you and it is really Jesus whom you are serving. People who do wrong will get what's coming to them. And Jesus does not have favorites.
00:18:48
Speaker
We like to say, oh, I'm mom's favorite. Oh, the boss likes me best. And that may be true in some circumstances, but that doesn't work with God or with Jesus.
00:19:00
Speaker
We cannot do so well that we become a favorite. There are no favorites. Isn't that disappointing a little bit? I know I like to be a considered a favorite. I don't know about you, but I like to work hard and and have people be happy so that they will like me more than they like other people.
00:19:21
Speaker
that's That's my confession to you. And and the thing is is, is it doesn't work that way with God. God says he has no favorites. So I cannot claim to be God's favorite just because I'm doing this Bible reading event. He doesn't love me more than he loves you because I am doing this event or because I'm sharing my, my true life applications. I am, it doesn't make me any better.
00:19:42
Speaker
We are the same.
00:19:46
Speaker
Now. If you are one in charge, if you are a master, so i'm I'm applying this to all leaders. We are all a leader over somebody. If you are an older brother or an older sister, there may be times where you are asked to watch your younger brother or younger sister. And if you are a leader,
00:20:05
Speaker
then you need to make sure that you give them what is right those who are under you you need to take care of them properly that doesn't mean to lord things over to over them jesus actually taught about this and said that human people they like to lord their authority over one another and jesus said it is not to be that way with you You are not to lord your authority over one another. He says, if you want to be the greatest, then you need to be a servant. You need to be the least in the kingdom because that is is how we work in this in this kingdom. It is not that we lord our authority or our positions over people.
00:20:44
Speaker
says, remember that you have a master in heaven and give your servants what is right and do give them what is fair. Work at praying, watch, be thankful.
00:20:56
Speaker
Pray for us too and ask God to give us times when we can tell our message. And then we can talk about the mystery of Jesus. And it's because of this mystery, Paul writes, that I am in jail.
00:21:10
Speaker
So pray that I can tell about it clearly because that's how I need to tell it. Be wise about how you act toward people who do not believe in Jesus.
00:21:22
Speaker
Use every minute to show that Jesus lives in you. Talk kindly and be wise, and then you will know how to answer people.
00:21:37
Speaker
Tychicus will tell you all about me. He is a true friend. He helps me to serve Jesus and I am sending him to you. And then you will know what's happening with us and he will help you feel better about us.
00:21:51
Speaker
Onesimus will be with him. He is also a true friend. And these two men will tell you what is happening here, here being in Rome. The one who is in jail with me says to tell you, hi, it is not Luke.
00:22:06
Speaker
So does Mark, who is the cousin of Barnabas. So make him feel welcome if he comes to you. And Justice says, hello. And these are the only Jewish men who are working with me.
00:22:19
Speaker
They help to make me feel better.
00:22:23
Speaker
Epaphras serves Jesus with us and he says hello too. He prays hard for you. He prays that you will keep following what God wants.
00:22:35
Speaker
And he prays that you will be grown up and wise. He prays that you will be sure of your faith. Now I can tell you that he works hard for you and he works hard for others too.
00:22:49
Speaker
He works very hard. Now Luke, the doctor, he is a special friend of ours. He and Demas say hello. Now say hi to God's people in the town next to you and tell Nympha hello.
00:23:05
Speaker
Say hi to God's people who meet at her house. After you read this letter, send it on to the next town and then you can also read the letter that I sent them.

Reflections and Prayers for Clarity

00:23:16
Speaker
And give this message to Archippus. Make sure you finish what Jesus wants you to do.
00:23:25
Speaker
I, Paul, am writing this part with my own hand. Remember me in jail. I hope God's kind love will be with you. From Paul and Timothy.
00:23:39
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:23:44
Speaker
So did it all come together for you? Did you see what love is and what love is not? We could very easily talk about every single point that Paul made today because today's reading was so extremely rich. it was For a little while, it was hard. I said, Lord, what do you want me to talk about? I mean, I when i i underline in my Bible as I am reading parts that look important. And i don't know if you can see that, but look, I have everything underlined. It starts down here.
00:24:19
Speaker
So it's on your it's on the side there. I have so many things underlined. And i went through, and look at that, all the way even on this page.
00:24:30
Speaker
Everything is underlined everywhere and boxed. Everything was important. but So that was when i prayed and and i asked God, i said I said, Lord, you are giving me this opportunity to tell your message.
00:24:49
Speaker
So I need to talk about it clearly. So i I need you to tell me clearly what it is. And so that's when he explained to me and showed me that what we are actually seeing is a description of how love is and how love is not.
00:25:06
Speaker
But I would like for you to pray for me as well. i would pray Please pray for me that as i do this reading and as I continue in my work with the Lord, that God continues to send me times when I can tell his message and then i can talk about Jesus and that I can talk about it clearly because that's how I need to tell it.
00:25:36
Speaker
I always um get people that God puts me with at work. And so like yesterday, it was Andrea. And so we had a great time talking and I knew. and it's And it's funny because I always feel like Ezekiel where God picks him up. I think it was Ezekiel. He picked him up in the spirit and he you took him away.
00:25:57
Speaker
Or like when ah the one, I think it was one of the disciples when they were told to, i think maybe it was Peter, who was told to go talk to the the the person who was riding in the chariot and he happened to be reading Isaiah. And he said, stand near the chariot.
00:26:13
Speaker
And so he he explained to him what he was reading and then God took him away. I feel like God just whisks me away to different people all of the time.
00:26:24
Speaker
And so I need to be sure that I am speaking clearly and and saying everything that God is telling me to say. i believe that that is occurring, but I do think it is a good prayer to to pray for me, please.
00:26:39
Speaker
So I have a prayer for you as well. in our daily and our reading here for our application, because these are things that Paul was praying for the people of Colossae. Boy, that's a tough name. I'm just going to call them the Colossians. I think that's why we call the book the Colossians. hu It's easier than saying Colossae.
00:27:03
Speaker
Let's see. That we would know and understand that what love is and what it is not. That's my own first prayer. That's my ah that's my interpretation. my My prayer for us today is that you will always understand what God's love is and know what to do and to be wise.
00:27:28
Speaker
and to know what is the the wrong thing to do so that we know how to please God and that you choose to do what is pleasing to God, knowing what it is that God would give you strength in your spirit to make those hard choices.
00:27:47
Speaker
Let's see, where is my prayer for this? Ah, and make sure that you finish what Jesus wants you to do. That is also my prayer. He said that was a message to Archippus.
00:28:00
Speaker
Make sure you finish what Jesus wants you to do. We all have work that God has given us to do. And we can't do it if we are too busy focusing on sinful behaviors and our old self.
00:28:14
Speaker
So while we are becoming that transformation of being like Jesus, We have work to do. And I pray that you will also finish the work that Jesus wants you to do, whatever it happens to be, because you are an important part of God's body.
00:28:33
Speaker
You are a member of the body. And whatever work he gives you, it is important. We talked one day about the fact that our enemy can make us feel like what we are doing doesn't matter.
00:28:44
Speaker
You may feel insignificant. And I don't want you to feel insignificant. And that is another thing that Paul is getting at here, is that whether you are feeling like you are a servant, a slave, or whether you are a master, whether you are a child, whether you are a husband, whether you are a wife Nobody is insignificant. There are no favorites.
00:29:07
Speaker
We are all equal in God's sight. And we all matter. We are all important parts of the body. So it matters how we treat one another.
00:29:21
Speaker
It matters how we treat others who are not believers. And I pray that whatever it is that God brings to you, that you will always be wise to see the truth and remember and be sure of your faith so that you do not believe lies and that you can instead speak boldly the mystery that God reveals to you it through his Holy Spirit to refute or to speak the truth against lies that you are given.

that the Holy Spirit will always speak boldly through you and let those people know if they are trying to tell you lies or if they are trying to encourage you in behavior that is of your old self or of the world's ways.

that you are able to be strong and stay thinking about God's ways. God's ways are much higher than our ways. And so since we have the mind of Jesus and we have God's spirit and we are one with Jesus, therefore one with God, therefore one with one another, and we are becoming a new self and we are not the old self, then let us do that boldly and not think about things of this world.

That is my prayer for you as well today.

Even if you are watching it in a later year or you're finding this a week or two or whatever later it happens to be, it doesn't have to be on November 24th. It can be on, or today's the 25th. Are we on the 24th? 24th,
