Happy Sunday, everyone. Thank you for joining me today. We will be starting the book of Ruth today. We will be reading about Ruth's dedication to both her mother-in-law, Naomi, and to God! We will see that God had a plan for Ruth's life, to bring her to Bethlehem and introduce her to Boaz. We will see Boaz's generosity to Naomi while she exercised her right to gather grain in his fields and be encouraged to be just as generous as Boaz in OUR lives. We will discuss the family line of Jesus, which included Rahab marrying Salmon and them having  Boaz. We will be reminded that God ALWAYS has a plan in mind and is working good into EVERYTHING that happens in our lives!

Introduction and Purpose

00:00:02
Speaker
Hi there, everyone. Welcome to Sunday, February 16th, 2025. You're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching, and we're here for our daily Bible reading. Thank you so much for joining me today. We are reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible, which is written by Karen Henley.

The Lineage of Faith

00:00:21
Speaker
And if you are new to joining us today, then I want to welcome you and encourage you not to be discouraged by the fact that we are reading a kids Bible. This is a magnificent overview of the Bible, but it's unique in that it is written not just in storybook form, but in chronological form.
00:00:38
Speaker
So this will give us a big overview of the story from Genesis all the way to Revelation. And what we're seeing specifically, at least in the Old Testament right now, is ah we are seeing the family line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Ruth's Genealogical Significance

00:00:54
Speaker
And we are seeing how that family is connected to bring us eventually to the line of Jesus, our Savior.
00:01:03
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing some of that in today's reading when we head into Ruth, because I wanted to let us all know if we are not already familiar that Rahab, who was the woman who protected the spies in the city of Jericho, is the ah wife of Salmon. She eventually married Salmon of the family line of Judah, and they had Boaz.
00:01:29
Speaker
And Boaz is a character that we are going to see today. I guess I shouldn't really say character because that kind of implies that it's just a story with it's people who are not real. The stories in the Bible are all real and they ah are telling us the wonderful story that God has given us. ah The miraculous things that he has done is as well as explained, like I mentioned, the genealogy, the history of how ah the family line brought us to Jesus.

Chronological Reading Approach

00:01:58
Speaker
And it is mentioned in the book of Matthew that Rahab and Salmon were the mother and father of Boaz. So I always love the connections that God gives us. And today we are going to be reading about Ruth. We're going to be seeing ah Ruth chapter 1 and 2. And I had mentioned yesterday that I thought we were done with the book of Judges, but we are actually not done with the book of Judges. I had looked ahead a little bit, but apparently not far enough. Because after we finish the book of Ruth, and we go back into

Naomi and Ruth's Journey

00:02:30
Speaker
Judges. This book is written chronologically. so
00:02:33
Speaker
um we will be skipping around a little bit because the books in the Bible are not necessarily presented in chronological order, which is why we're reading this book. So if you have your calendar today, let's get that out and you can get ready to put your sticker on. And I have my sticker on there since I've already read today. And we're here on the 16th. Can you believe we're already halfway through our second month? I know the time is just really flying by for me.
00:03:05
Speaker
So thank you for being here with me today, whether you are finding me on TikTok, or whether you are finding me on YouTube, or whether you are from my site, or whether you are listening from your favorite podcast, whether that's Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, ah podcasts.
00:03:23
Speaker
Chaser, Podchaser, I think it's called Overcast, Podbean, Podfriend, however you have found me today, iHeartRadio. I am so glad to be here with you today, and I'm so glad that God led you here.
00:03:37
Speaker
So let's go ahead and get started. We are going to begin with the book of Ruth today. And if you are reading along and you are hungry for more of God's word and more of the details that are surrounding our story today, then I want to always encourage you to head up your big Bible and read chapters one and two out of Ruth today.
00:03:57
Speaker
I'm also considering ah doing a separate video where I will have the full version ah of chapters one and two read from the NIV Bible for anybody who is interested in listening to the full book and enjoys hearing it being read to them versus reading it to themselves.

Ruth's Loyalty and Boaz's Generosity

00:04:17
Speaker
So just leave me a little comment if you like that. I noticed that the last time when I incorporated a separate video of the Bible's reading that it was watched. And so ah it seemed like that was enjoyed. And so I was, I'm encouraged to do that at times when it seems like it may be appropriate. So we are heading up chapter one and it's entitled Going Home.
00:04:45
Speaker
There were some hard years in the times of the judges. Sometimes food wouldn't grow. Then there was not enough to eat. So some families moved to other lands for a while. One man left Judah and he moved with his wife and family to the land of Moab. He had two sons and his wife's name was Naomi. After they had moved, the man died and Naomi had to take care of their sons. When Naomi's sons were old enough, they got married.
00:05:15
Speaker
One married a woman named Orpah and another one married a young woman named Ruth. But about 10 years later, both of Naomi's sons died. So Naomi was left alone with Orpah and Ruth. One day Naomi heard that there was food in Judah and that's when she decided to go back home. So Naomi and Orpah and Ruth packed up and they got ready to go back to Naomi's home.
00:05:44
Speaker
Then they started down the road to Judah. But Naomi turned to both Orpah and Ruth and said, go back home. I pray that God will be kind to you and that he will send you new husbands. Then Naomi kissed Orpah and Ruth goodbye.
00:06:01
Speaker
Orpa and Ruth cried, we want to go with you, they said. No, said Naomi, go back home. Why do you want to come with me? I don't have any other sons to be your husbands. This is a sad time for me. God must have turned against me. Orpa and Ruth cried again. Then Orpa kissed Naomi. She said goodbye and went home.
00:06:26
Speaker
But Ruth kept hugging Naomi. Look at Orpa, said Naomi. She's going home. You should go back with her. Don't tell me to leave you, said Ruth. I'll go where you go. I'll stay where you stay. Your people will become my people. And your God will become my God. Where you die, I'll die. My grave will be by yours. I won't leave you as long as you live.
00:06:56
Speaker
Naomi could see that Ruth really wanted to go with her, so she didn't ask her to go back anymore. Ruth and Naomi traveled to the town of Bethlehem, and when they got there, people began talking about them. Is that Naomi, they asked? That was my name, said Naomi, but God has sent me trouble. So just call me Mara, for God has made my life sad.
00:07:22
Speaker
When I left here, I was full, but I'm coming back with nothing.
00:07:29
Speaker
In the grain fields, chapter two. Now Naomi's husband still had family in Bethlehem, and one of the men in the family was named Boaz. One day Ruth told Naomi, let me go out today. I'll go to the fields. The workers are picking grain, and I'll pick up some of the grain that's left over. All right, said Naomi, go ahead.
00:07:51
Speaker
So Ruth went to the fields. She started picking up grain that was left over. She was working in Boaz's fields, but she didn't know it. And about that time Boaz came back from town. He called hello to his workers and they called back to him. Then Boaz talked to the man in charge of the workers. Who was that young woman over but there? He asked.
00:08:17
Speaker
Oh, that's the woman who came back with Naomi, he said. She's from Moab, and she asked if she could gather grain that was left over. So we let her go into the fields. She worked hard all morning. She rested for just a little while. Boaz went over to talk to Ruth. You can stay right here in my fields, he said. Don't go anywhere else. Follow along after my servant girls. I told my workers not to bother you. And if you get thirsty, drink from our water jars.
00:08:48
Speaker
Ruth bowed down. I'm not even from this land, she said. So why are you being so nice to me? I heard about what you did for Naomi, said Boaz. You left your family, you left your land, you came here to live with people you didn't know, and you've been good to Naomi. So I hope God brings good things to you.
00:09:12
Speaker
I hope I keep making you happy, said Ruth. You've made me feel much better and you've been kind to me. But I know your servant girls are more important than I am. And when it was time to eat, Boaz called to Ruth. Come and eat over here. Here's some bread for you. So Ruth sat down with the other workers and Boaz gave her some cooked grain to eat. Ruth ate as much as she wanted and there was still some leftover.
00:09:43
Speaker
When Ruth went back to the field, Boaz talked to his workers. Let her get the grain wherever she wants, even if she gets it from around the piles you've gathered. Don't make her feel bad about it. In fact, pull some grain out of the piles for her and leave it for her to pick up. Don't get mad at her. So Ruth gathered grain there until evening. Then she beat the grain. She threw away the part that wasn't good for eating.
00:10:13
Speaker
She had gathered just a little more than a half a bushel. Ruth took the grain back to town. And when Naomi saw it, she said, where did you go? Whose field did you work in? Oh, I worked with Boaz today, said Ruth. I pray that God brings him good things, said Naomi. Boaz is being kind to us. My husband was from his family.
00:10:39
Speaker
Boaz told me to stay with his workers, said Ruth, and he told me to work in his fields until they finished. It's good for you to go with his servant girls, said Naomi. In somebody else's field, you might get hurt. So Ruth worked with Boaz's servant girls. She gathered barley and wheat until the work was done. And all that time, she lived with Naomi.

God's Plan and Provision

00:11:04
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:11:09
Speaker
Well, I'll tell you, I recorded this and then God showed me I was missing a big picture. And ah and i so I needed to rerecord it. And i it's really important to see God's provision, that God has a plan.
00:11:28
Speaker
and that he is working this plan always. He's working it in your life, and he's working it in my life. And it doesn't matter how young you are or how old we are. God is working good, and he is working his plans into our lives every single day, into every single event. So God needed,
00:11:48
Speaker
ah
00:11:50
Speaker
Naomi and her husband to go to Moab and so he used the circumstances of there not being much food and they would leave and go to look for food in Moab and that is where their sons grew up and met ah their wives there, one of which was Ruth now.
00:12:13
Speaker
ah Naomi was very sad when when she when her husband died, and of course, and she was very sad when her sons died. And there's no reason why she shouldn't be sad for that. And she didn't understand that God had a bigger plan. She didn't know that Ruth was going to be a descendant of the Messiah.
00:12:39
Speaker
Rahab and Salmon were Boaz's parents and God had already predestined for Ruth to be part of that family line. Her heart was for God in the same way that Rahab's heart was for God. They both converted and they were very dedicated to God. They made God their God and they acknowledged that he was the one God.
00:13:06
Speaker
So there were sad circumstances and Ruth ah was loving of her mother-in-law Naomi. And when Naomi decided to return home because she heard that now there was food in Judah, it was not coincidence. God's timing is ever perfect. And so they headed back and they went to Bethlehem, which was where they were from. And does Bethlehem sound familiar to anybody?
00:13:36
Speaker
That's where Jesus was born, because that's where Mary and Joseph needed to go, because that's where Jesus's family was from, where they needed to do the census, where the king was having them count the people. And later on, Isaiah would prophesy and say that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem.
00:13:58
Speaker
So there is a reason why we have all of these stories in the Bible. And it's not just so we can read about them and enjoy them. It's because God is showing us the big picture that God's had a plan from the very beginning. And he knew who was going to be a part of that plan. And these circumstances all work together for God's plan.
00:14:20
Speaker
When Naomi got back to Bethlehem, she was very sad, and she said, don't call me Naomi anymore, call me Mara, because God has made me sad. And one of the things that she said was that um she was going back to Judah because, and let's see,
00:14:42
Speaker
that God had turned his back on her, trying to see where that was. God must have turned against me. I don't have any more sons to be your husbands, and this is a sad time for me. God must have turned against me. But in all that time, God was not turned against her, and that we don't want to look at things that happened to us and say that God has turned against us either. So I want us to be encouraged to see the big picture, that we may not understand what is going on or why these supposed bad things are happening, but to instead have faith and see from the example in Ruth.
00:15:17
Speaker
that God had a plan the entire time. It is sad when we lose the people that we love and it's sad when events happen, but that doesn't mean that God has turned away from us and it doesn't mean that he is against us. It means that these are the circumstances that are necessary in order to move us to where we need to be. And so that was the part that I had missed earlier. I didn't have any of that mentioned and in my previous recording and so I'm redoing it.
00:15:50
Speaker
And I wanted to ah show that God had provision in mind with Boaz. Boaz had a heart for God. He was very generous. And when he provided for for Ruth gathering in the fields, as was her right to do, ah he was generous. And he told his workers to leave extra for her to find. And it says that she gathered just over half a bushel. So she gathered quite a lot.
00:16:18
Speaker
I don't know exactly how big a bushel is, but we're talking like a basket full. So she was able to gather in one day a great deal of grain, her very first day. So she didn't just end up at anybody's field, did she? She ended up in Boaz's field. So God, once again, guided where she was to go. God led her heart to be strong for Naomi and for him.
00:16:44
Speaker
And God led her right to Boaz's field. And tomorrow we will see what he's going to do with that. Many of us have read the book of Ruth, but maybe there are those of us here who have not. And so I don't want to spoil that story for us. But we will see God's great plan for Ruth and for Boaz. And so I wanted to encourage us to be as generous as Boaz. He was taking care of her.
00:17:11
Speaker
and not just providing for Naomi and Ruth with the food, but he was giving protection for her. He said to stay in his field so that he she would be safe. And Naomi said the same thing. She said that if you go into somebody else's field, you could get hurt. So Boaz was looking out for her wellbeing, her safety.
00:17:32
Speaker
Just isn't that so much like God? He not only provides for our physical needs, but he provides for our physical care and protection as well. And in this case, he used Boaz to do it. Boaz was very thoughtful and generous. And he had heard what Naomi did, ah what Ruth did for Naomi by leaving her homeland and her dedication to Naomi. And he was and very moved by that.
00:17:58
Speaker
and to provide for Naomi, who was part of his family. Whereas Ruth did not know that Naomi was part of his family, he did. Once he found out who she was, he was providing for his family.
00:18:13
Speaker
And I wanted to remind us that the reason ah Ruth was going through the fields and looking for grain is that that was her right. Do you remember the rules that God gave for when grain was planted and we were harvesting the fields? God said not to harvest every grain from the fields, but to leave some for those who were poor who would be permitted to go through and walk the fields to gather food to eat.
00:18:39
Speaker
And so it was her right to do that.

Reflection and Audience Engagement

00:18:41
Speaker
And he not only allowed her this right, but he made sure that they had enough. He even gave her lunch and told her that she could drink water from his jars.
00:18:53
Speaker
And so ah it's just, it's so wonderful to see Boaz's generous spirit. And so I would like to encourage us to be as generous as Boaz and to be encouraged to look to God's greater plan and trust that although we may not understand why the circumstances we are going through are happening right now, even when there is death in the family. And then for her there was for Naomi, there was a great deal of death. She lost her husband and she lost both of her sons.
00:19:23
Speaker
And these situations were necessary for ah Ruth to then go and marry Boaz. And there would be no reason for Ruth to go with Naomi if she had not first been married to Naomi's son who had died. So we see that God absolutely used everything for good in the story of Ruth there.
00:19:51
Speaker
So let's see, I think that's all I have for us today. That's quite a bit, actually, I think. So thank you for joining me today for this wonderful story of Ruth. And we will see what happens with the rest of our story tomorrow. Since Ruth is such a short story, we will finish it in two days. And I have been I was thinking about recording the book of Ruth in two sessions books one and two like we read today and then books three and four tomorrow and so that if anybody is interested in hearing that short story and and they just enjoy the reading of it hearing it read to them that I will have that video up
00:20:35
Speaker
I don't want us to be confused, though, and because it seemed there was a little bit of confusion with the video that I posted of the reading of the full book, that it was a little bit confused with our daily reading. And so I want to be clear that it will be a secondary video, not the primary video for today.
00:20:58
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today, and i ah I hope that you will join us again tomorrow for our daily reading. If you enjoyed today's reading, please click that light button. It looks just like a thumbs up button, but if you look closely, it's a light. It's to show that if God has lit up your heart today and you feel that God has lit your light,
00:21:24
Speaker
Then let's be encouraged to show that like and show that light to the world by ah gaining some attraction with the number of likes that this session gets and to light the world up for Jesus, because we are the light of the world. And let's ah help spread the word about reading God's word every day. I will see everybody again tomorrow. I hope everybody enjoys the rest of their Sunday.
