Thank you for joining me today. Today we will be completing the book of  Ruth with Chapters 3 and 4. We will see Ruth obeying Naomi's guidance to  go to Boaz, asking him to marry her and take care of her as a man related to her husband, and his responsibility to do so, since her  husband had died. We will see Boaz thankful to Ruth and honoring to God,  making sure that the man first in line has the opportunity to accept this responsibility before agreeing to marry her. We will see Boaz  caring for both Ruth and Naomi when he gives Ruth food before she  leaves. In our discussion I will share my personal application to how I related to Ruth marrying an older man who had been taking care of her.

Introduction to the Bible Reading Session

00:00:03
Speaker
Happy President's Day, everyone. Today is Monday, February 17th, 2025, and you're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We're here for our daily Bible reading.
00:00:14
Speaker
I hope everyone is doing great this Monday, and we are reading through the entire Bible in one year, and we are using the Day by Day Kids Bible, which is written by Karen Henley.
00:00:26
Speaker
This is a chronologically written Bible and it's also written in story form. So we are getting the big picture from Genesis all the way to Revelation with a focus on ah the family line of Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham.
00:00:43
Speaker
Not in that order, the reverse order usually.

Current Reading and Participation Encouragement

00:00:46
Speaker
And so ah we have been reading through the entire Bible and we are in the book of Ruth at the moment. So welcome, everybody. If you have your calendar, you can go ahead and get that out and get ready to mark off your day on your calendar.
00:01:00
Speaker
We are using these calendars to mark off our commitment and our achievement to read the Bible every day this year. And if you don't already have your own calendar, then please feel free to head over to my site at
00:01:19
Speaker
and click on the Read the Bible in One Year tab, and you will find a free downloadable calendar for you to mark off your days. And it doesn't matter what you use to mark off your days, but if you are interested in supporting the event, then I will send you a printed copy of that calendar on sugar cane paper, as well as a sheet of stickers, ah the same ones that I'm using for the month.
00:01:42
Speaker
And that is just my way of giving back to you as a thank you for supporting my event. It is not necessary. It is absolutely voluntary. And it doesn't matter if you ah use that downloadable calendar and use your own stickers or your own way of crossing off that calendar.
00:01:59
Speaker
I just want to make everybody aware that it is an option if you are new here. And if you're not new here, thank you for listening to me say that almost every day.

Ruth's Story and Genealogy Significance

00:02:10
Speaker
So I hope you've been enjoying our Bible reading. We are in the book of Ruth right now, and it's an awesome book. It's short, and it takes place in the middle of Judges.
00:02:20
Speaker
So since this is chronologically written, it is inserted in between some chapters of Judges. And that lets us know the timeline of when things occurred.
00:02:31
Speaker
So let's go ahead and get started with our reading today.
00:02:38
Speaker
Today's reading is going to complete the book of Ruth with chapters 3 and 4. And if you are interested in hearing more details about what happened in our story and you feel that there is just a little bit more that you're not getting and you're interested in in knowing, please head up your Big Bible and check out Ruth chapters 3 and 4.
00:02:57
Speaker
This is a beautiful book, and it really highlights God's divine provision for Ruth. during this time And for the family line of Jesus, as we will see a little bit of the genealogy at the very end of the chapter, which is included in the regular version of Ruth.
00:03:18
Speaker
And i know I mentioned this before, but ah the family line of Boaz in the story, his father was Salmon and his mother was Rahab, who was the woman in Jericho who helped the spies be safe while they were there checking out Jericho before the Israelites came in and took over the city.
00:03:41
Speaker
And I think it's really great that in Matthew chapter one, when Matthew gives us and the genealogy of Jesus, that he mentions both Rahab and Ruth. And that's one of the ways that we know that Rahab was the mother of Boaz.
00:03:56
Speaker
It's because she was married to Salmon. She ended up marrying Salmon and then they had Boaz.

Ruth's Dedication and God's Plan

00:04:02
Speaker
And we saw yesterday that and Naomi was very sad in her life, thinking that God had turned his back on her ah for some reason.
00:04:11
Speaker
But we wanted to remember that God does not turn his back on any of us, that he had a divine plan all along. And as I was reading about Ruth and doing a little bit of backstory, because I like to learn a little bit more, i'm that's the way I'm hungry. I'm always curious to know a little bit more about the story. And so I do some research on that in general.
00:04:35
Speaker
and And it is a thought also that elsewhere in the Bible, i think it was Isaiah, that ah when God crafts the wild vine into the the olive branch, that it is referring to Ruth and Rahab because they were both Moabite women and they represent Gentiles who became ah believers in God and worshiped God and were very dedicated to God. that They left their people to serve God and they both declared that God um was to be their God.
00:05:14
Speaker
And so God had purpose for for these women even before we knew of them. and he has purpose for us too.
00:05:23
Speaker
So we pick up with ah Ruth and it's called a Night in the Barn. One day Naomi told Ruth, you should have a husband.
00:05:37
Speaker
You need someone who can take care of you. Here's our law. Your husband has died. So someone in his family should marry you. And Boaz is from your husband's family, and you've been working in his field.
00:05:51
Speaker
Boaz will work in the barn with the grain tonight. So wash up and put on some perfume, said Naomi. Get dressed in your best clothes and then go to the barn.
00:06:04
Speaker
Don't let Boaz see you, said Naomi. He will eat and drink and watch him and go see where he lies down to rest. And then go over to him and take the covers off of his feet.
00:06:16
Speaker
Then you lie down at his feet too. And Boaz will tell you what to do after that. All right, said Ruth. I'll do whatever you want. So that night Ruth went to the barn and she did just what Naomi had told her to do.
00:06:32
Speaker
Boaz ate and drank, and he was feeling good. There was a big pile of grain on the floor, and Boaz went around it to the other side. He lay down there.
00:06:44
Speaker
Ruth was very quiet. She walked over to Boaz, and she took the covers off of his feet. Then she lay down, too. Late in the night, Boaz woke up.
00:06:57
Speaker
He turned over, and he saw someone lying at his feet. It was a woman. Who are you? he asked. I'm Ruth, she answered, and you are from my husband's family.
00:07:09
Speaker
Would you take care of me? God will bring good things to you, said Boaz. This is the kindest thing you could do for me. You didn't try to get younger men to like you.
00:07:21
Speaker
They might have been rich or poor, but you didn't go after them. So don't be afraid. I'll do what you're asking. Everybody knows you're a good person.
00:07:33
Speaker
Boaz went on. You're right. I am from your dead husband's family. But there is also another man who is from your dead husband's family. And by law, he gets to marry you first if he wants.
00:07:46
Speaker
So stay here for the rest of the night. And in the morning, I'll go ask him. If he wants to marry you, then he can. But if he won't, then God knows that I will.
00:07:59
Speaker
So just stay here until it's morning.
00:08:03
Speaker
Ruth stayed in the barn until early morning, and she got up while it was still dark. Boaz said, Don't let anybody know you were here. Now hold out your coat.
00:08:15
Speaker
Ruth held her coat out, and Boaz filled it with grain. He helped tie it around her, and then she went back to Naomi's.

Boaz and Ruth's Marriage

00:08:24
Speaker
What happened?
00:08:25
Speaker
asked Naomi. And Ruth told na Naomi everything. She showed Naomi the grain Boaz gave her. We'll wait now, said Naomi.
00:08:36
Speaker
Boaz will find out what he needs to know today.
00:08:41
Speaker
a Deal at the City Gate, Ruth, Chapter 4.
00:08:47
Speaker
That same morning, Boaz went to the city gate. He sat down. Soon the other man in Naomi's phone but family came by. Hello, friend, called Boaz.
00:08:57
Speaker
Come sit by and lean. So the man went over and sat down by Boaz. Boaz asked 10 town leaders to sit with them. He said to the man next to him, Naomi came back to Bethlehem from Moab, and she is selling land that once belonged to our family.
00:09:17
Speaker
And I thought I should tell you, that way you can buy it if you want to. If you don't want it, I'll buy it. By law, you get to choose first. Then I'll buy it, said the man.
00:09:31
Speaker
Ruth, the woman from Moab, comes with the land, said Boaz. And when you buy the land, you have to marry her. Then I can't buy the land, said the man. You buy it for yourself.
00:09:45
Speaker
Now back then, people made a deal this way. One person would take his shoe off and he would give it to the other person. And that's what the man did.
00:09:57
Speaker
Then Boaz told all the people listening You see this. Today i am buying the land from Naomi, and Ruth will be my wife.
00:10:08
Speaker
You saw the deal we made. Then the people said, We saw it, and we pray that God will give you children. We pray that you'll have a good family. So Boaz married Ruth.
00:10:22
Speaker
Later, God gave them a baby boy. The women of the town were happy for Naomi. Praise God, they said. Now you have a family again.
00:10:34
Speaker
we hope everyone hears about Boaz. Ruth loves you, and now you have a grandson. He will cheer you up when you are old. Naomi held the baby in her lap.
00:10:46
Speaker
She helped take care of him. The women said, Naomi now has a boy in her family. They named the baby Obed. He grew up and he became Jesse's father.
00:10:59
Speaker
And Jesse grew up and became King David's father.
00:11:05
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:11:09
Speaker
And we know that Jesus was descended from King David's family. And this is how we see it way back when. And I just love that.

Personal Story Parallel

00:11:20
Speaker
So I wanted to ah give you a little bit of insight about some of the things. So basically, Ruth proposed to Boaz. And when she spread her her coat over his feet in ah in a Jewish wedding ceremony, they spread out a cloak, a cloth, and that is to show that they will be covered under the same cover to share life together.
00:11:47
Speaker
And so she was asking him to marry her. as was his ah right to do so as part of her family, because she was married and her husband had died and had left them with no children.
00:12:00
Speaker
And so it was Jewish custom that if a man died and the wife was left with no children, that another man from the same family ah was to marry her, if possible, and have children with her so that the family would not go without children.
00:12:21
Speaker
And so we see that this is what they are asking. And Boaz was thrilled. He was thrilled that Naomi was asking him when he was an older man.
00:12:34
Speaker
And that he commends her that she could have ah gone after and been interested in any man younger than him, whether they were rich or poor, because everyone knew she was a good woman.
00:12:48
Speaker
And so he was he was very thankful that she had gone to him. And Boaz honored the law and made sure that he was doing right in God's sight by making sure that the other man who had priority over him was given the choice to take her as his wife as well.
00:13:07
Speaker
And that's why Naomi would have been selling the land too, is to make sure that Ruth was provided for and that the other man said no and Boaz said he would do it.
00:13:20
Speaker
So I thought that was wonderful to see God's great provision. One of the reasons that I like ah the story of Ruth is that I feel a little bit like Ruth. Remember when we talked at the very beginning that we're to see ourselves in the story and to... um see where we are similar to the people.
00:13:40
Speaker
And for me, ah the the the story is is is close for me because ah when I met my husband, I was about eight months pregnant with my daughter.
00:13:52
Speaker
And And he ended up being known to my boss, who, when when I told him, when he asked me where was I working, i told him where I was working. And he asked me if Vicky still worked there.
00:14:06
Speaker
And I said, well, nobody calls her Vicky. It's Victoria. And he said, well, I do. And tell her that I said hello. So I went to work the next day. And i told my boss, hey, I'm supposed to tell Vicky.
00:14:20
Speaker
And she sat up. She knew only one person called her Vicki. And said, I said, I'm supposed to tell you that Jim Busolato says hello. And she said, you're going to like him.
00:14:35
Speaker
was like, okay. And it turned out that i did like him. But he cared about me, just like how Boaz cared about Ruth. And notice how even when she left in the morning, he filled her cloak with grain.
00:14:50
Speaker
and he sent her away with food for Naomi and for her. So he was always taking care of them. And in the same way, when my daughter was born, ah he came and he brought me gifts for her, diapers and wipes and stuff, just as gifts, not because I needed them at the time, but because they were thoughtful gifts that he was using to take care of me.
00:15:09
Speaker
And he was just always looking out for me. And in the same way, years later, um i asked him to marry me. And he agreed to marry me.
00:15:22
Speaker
um And so he ended up actually adopting my daughter as well. And so I have, I feel like my own little Ruth story with my own Boaz, because he is older than me.
00:15:33
Speaker
And, um, Yeah. So I just thought I would share that little bit. And so I feel like, uh, over the years I have often felt, uh, a kindred spirit with Ruth, uh, in, in that I had my Boaz taking care of me and, uh, God has a plan for everybody.
00:15:54
Speaker
And we've, we've talked about that many times. And so I, I always like to think, um, of him being part of that plan that God had to take care of me. That part of my life choices, I wouldn't be where I am today if I had not had those opportunities that I had um when when we met and got together.
