Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host for this particular episode, Dan Tanner. And today I'm with Quizmaster extraordinaire, Joe Lodge, who's gonna go, have a nice conversation with me and go through the latest goings on latest going on at Palace. So how are you doing in this midweek, Joe?
00:00:37
Joe Lodge
I like Quizmaster extraordinaire. fitmo I think I might have just found my Wu Tang name there. that's That's pretty good. I'm happy with that. Yeah, I'm doing very well. Doing very well.
00:00:47
Joe Lodge
A bit cold, as I think the whole country is at the moment. But and in good spirits.
00:00:51
officialgspn
I'm going to take the experience.
00:00:53
Joe Lodge
I'm enjoying the proper winter that we're having so far, or how many of them, you know, that we're previewing right now of November.
00:00:56
officialgspn
I'll show you.
00:01:02
Joe Lodge
Summer was such a nonsense, nothing season this time around that I'm in the mood for some extreme weather.
00:01:12
officialgspn
It is it is very much winter is coming, if you want to use a very, very the Game of Thrones though title. Right.

Transfer Rumors and Managerial Changes

00:01:22
officialgspn
So today's episode, we are going to be quickly going through some of the latest transfer rumors, as now that it is now the beginning of the season, the time of year where transfers start getting kind of start coming out. Some new some manager situations of come about over the last couple of days. a Also, a potential complications due to a French club not being able to balance its books and what connection it might have to Crystal Palace. And just to finish off, the last to last international recap of the year, so there's one or two players that were in in international duty last night. so
00:02:11
officialgspn
So let's kick off with a couple of transfer rumours that have come in as of this morning. One being that Tyreek Mitchell has been linked to both Galatasaray and Man United. And the Newcastle have started a bidding war again for Gehi as they started in the summer.
00:02:33
officialgspn
What are your kind of thoughts on so like the Tyreek Mitchell going to Galatasaray or Man United? Is there one you'd favour or would you prefer him not going anywhere?
00:02:45
Joe Lodge
I think, yeah, what I'd favor is is him not going anywhere. Certainly, for the time being, I think the club can make an assessment come the end of the season. But right now, but in January, we'd kind of be wanting them to try and sign one or two more left backs, not lose the one they have. He already looks like he's doing about three people's job and, yeah, quite knackered by the end of some games. I think In terms of, I always sort of think United is ah ah a dangerous move for any promising young player to make. You might have more fun in Galatasterite, so in terms of wanting the best for him, do you think maybe, like with everyone on the other hand,
00:03:31
Joe Lodge
Depending on his ambitions, United under Amorim could be an interesting project, could be an exciting one, and he'll be playing in a top five league for one of the biggest clubs in the world still. I think it's bantering aside, it's fair to call United that and you can see how they still carry some some clout. I'm not quite sure where he'd fit into the Amorim thing because he's ah ah another wingbacks merchant and sporting although he has suggested that maybe he would consider varying that up a bit at the United due to personnel but I think we'll we'll see that he he's learning the role but he's not a natural
00:04:17
Joe Lodge
sort of flying wing back Mitchell. So whether that quite works out or they're going to have another Wambasaka situation where they sign a brilliant defensive fallback from Palace and then realise if I dominate games you need defenders who are really good on the ball. I don't know. So yeah, I'm not not quite sure. I think both are really noisy clubs that have a lot of chance for talk about them.
00:04:41
Joe Lodge
always so by the way I was completely realistic who really knows at this stage but yeah if I was if I was Tariq I'd be going off to drink Turkish coffee and spill tea with Wanda Nara and Mara Akkadi if that sounds like a laugh.
00:05:00
officialgspn
I definitely think it'd be a lot more interesting, but I'm not so sure on that. Just mainly on the how dysfunctional the Turkish League is going at the moment. I if I was Tyree be going, I don't want to get involved in any of that whatsoever.
00:05:10
Joe Lodge
problem.
00:05:15
officialgspn
I'd probably play it if the option came up. I'd be playing it safe and go up to Manchester. Just you probably might get a little bit more of a game or anything up there, but just staying away from the Turkish League altogether.

Newcastle's Pursuit of Gehi

00:05:28
officialgspn
That being said, we now also have reinvigorated the transfer interest from Newcastle into Gehi, which is still rolling on from the summer. I remember the early podcast of basically it was the only thing we were really talking about and how much we were trying to push up the price. So is there more of a possibility in January or do we try and hope or do we hope Gehi stays on until the end of the season and then we pick this drama up all over again?
00:05:59
Joe Lodge
Yeah, I don't think there's more of a possibility in January really. That said, the lesson that we learned from the Jackie Anderson sale in in the summer was probably that if good value comes in for a player, Steve Parrish more often than not probably will sell them because I think he's got that.
00:06:25
Joe Lodge
sort of no relegation or administration rather never again mentality where if someone makes financial sense he'll probably do it but i think it would take again still a really big offer i don't necessarily see that asking price having gone down as long as Palace are still in a position where they don't do have such a bad month in the intervening period that they actually look at them they all want to go down that might knock a bit off as well but I think the time being it could even only strengthen it on some way because it's important to Palace is
00:07:01
Joe Lodge
Even greater, he, despite the poor form of the team, has continued to play really well and has really cemented himself in that England spot. So, yeah, I mean, I think there'll be, Parrish will be asking for the same amount of money and ah even more reluctant to sell than last time, given the lack of time to find the suitable replacement and the urgency of finding a suitable replacement in Pelis' position were we to go. Yeah, I probably don't see it happening. Yeah, what were you doing?
00:07:36
officialgspn
I'm kind of on the fence. I can kind of see it happening but you don't really get the big transfers in January like the 80, 90 million like price tags. You get the second string moving off somewhere to say the middle clubs or whatever but and you can always kind of see it especially if the right price comes in because I remember doing the summer it was It was started at 60. No, we want 70. We'll give you 65. No, we want 70. And I don't see Newcastle will push it all that far. They'll probably do the same thing in the summer and try and low ball it a little bit, just so they can get a bit of value for money. But you've also got, on the other hand, Newcastle aren't really plugging away at like a European spot at the moment. They are struggling. So for them kind of struggling in the mid table,
00:08:35
officialgspn
So it it's mainly up to Gahy, really. I think he'd probably try and at least stay at the club until the end of the season and go from there, much like Eze is probably having the the same conversation with his agent. We'll stick out for the year and then if we go down, we'll try and make a move. If not, we try and stay a little bit longer or try and make a move in the summer, which is a lot more sort of like a lot more time to negotiate back and forth and things like that because the January is very much a we want to do this in one day kind of attitude. So with that I think it's not a bad place. Oh no, before I forget, we've also got some managerial news to come up with a palace... ah palace tint to it we have.

Vieira's Managerial Journey

00:09:26
officialgspn
Vieira is now the new agatha at Genoa.
00:09:30
officialgspn
struggling at the but struggling in Syria. And also the bizarre story of Jamie Punchan leaving the second tier Cypriot team of Ayanappa after two games and about three weeks in charge. So what do we think of these kind of stories here? Vieira, do you think he's a good shout for Genoa? It's sort of the struggling team down the bottom of Syria.
00:09:59
Joe Lodge
Yeah, I think it it makes enough sense for them. My only thinking with Genoa is that the sacking of Gileadino seems incredibly harsh. He'd taken them up in his first half a season. and guided them to 11th last year and now, yes, they 17th, having played above 10 points for 12 games. But those 12 games have included matches against Inter, Juve, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina.
00:10:31
Joe Lodge
Atalanta to Bologna, who are pretty good these days. So I think it seemed like just from the outside looking at a pretty high sacking, although that's part and parcel of Serie A football, I think. But basically, Vieras seems to have done a good job in both his last two jobs.
00:10:51
Joe Lodge
I wasn't following Palace as closely at the time, actually, but I always felt he did a pretty good job at Palace of combining attractive and effective football, certainly in that first season. And then the second season he he got fired.
00:11:08
Joe Lodge
Admittedly with palace three points above the relegation zone but off the back of a really tough run of games and you kind of felt like if they let him carry on in charge he probably would have turned it around and being fine. You know went to Strasbourg where he managed to guide them to comfortable safety in 13th and that was at a time where They're not a massive club anyway. That's not a bad result for them. And there's a lot of toxicity around the stadium about fans protesting. Todd Boley turning them into a Chelsea feeder club. It's a club that does not need to be fed. And they kind of left, I think, in low circumstances again, probably having given a perfectly good account of themselves. So I think it makes enough sense for for Genoa. I wish him the best. He's a good manager. Yeah. What about you?
00:12:01
officialgspn
Yeah, very much the same sentiment, only kind of wishing the best. He was a good manager for us. We did have the the luxury of Gallagher playing at that point where he was just, he was the engine of that team and he was very much put us on his back and he just went for it. he's only gone from strength to strength at the moment. So yeah, all we can do is wish, wishing well is the new venture.
00:12:27
officialgspn
And Genoa is going to be interesting to try and keep them up in the Italian League. There are some fairly strong powerhouses and some pretty interesting sort of players in there. So we yeah and we can only wish him luck from the ah Daily Palace podcast. And just before we take a little break, what do you think of this story of Jenny Punchan only being in INAPA for three weeks.
00:12:53
officialgspn
I know a lot of people probably go to INAPA for only a couple of weeks, have a bit of fun, but he was out there for a job.
00:12:59
Joe Lodge
Yeah, I think we're both.
00:13:00
officialgspn
Got to do games, I believe, I think one one of them, and I'm not sure about the other result, but I think he won both. so Yeah, what do we think of this store?
00:13:11
officialgspn
I didn't even know he was a manager, so I saw this this morning and it was very, hang on, what? So what are your very sort of relatively quick thoughts on that?
00:13:20
Joe Lodge
Well yeah as you've touched on there Dan, my first thought is three weeks is two weeks too many to spend in ironapper for a start. I think it's it's confusing, a sort of story that was developing without many details. I was wondering, is it the stress of being in charge of 30-year-olds, 20-year-old men who live in iron alcohol year round? That sounds quite difficult. Maybe the toilet was too far from the technical area, wasn't quite sure what had happened. But it did, it was announced just before we came on to Recordless on his Instagram that he has been appointed as manager of
00:14:04
Joe Lodge
ahreus Akritas Cloraca, who were one position above, and I threw in the league, I think, on goal.
00:14:13
officialgspn
So he got punched basically.
00:14:13
Joe Lodge
I don't know why he made the move, if it's like, it's near a team that he, another team that he used to manage, because he's now in this fourth club and in Cyprus.
00:14:24
Joe Lodge
in peer maybe just prefers that side of the island to the other side, I can't think why that would be the case. But yes, it's a weird one. and I suspect, you know, he's managing the Cypriot second division, so with all due respect to that league and those teams,
00:14:44
Joe Lodge
I think it's a little bit looser than managing a team at the top level and probably he's doing it as much to pass the time as anything. So I imagine he's happy. He's just not about whether he sees fit, but kind of happy for punching because I didn't realize how much of a life he made for himself and in Cyprus until seeing this, that he's actually been darting around. He's quickly becoming a journeyman manager in Cyprus. I mean, that's quite sweet. If he's a he' happy in his place in the sun then, yeah, all power to him. I hope he does well at the Croetus Chlorica.
00:15:26
officialgspn
Yeah, if you it's a nice job, if you can get it really go and manage out in sort of in the sun, basically almost year round sun so.

Financial Issues at Lyon

00:16:27
officialgspn
And with that, we will move on to our next item of business, which is the potential financial slash transfer complications that could arise from Leon getting a provisional relegation
00:16:46
officialgspn
ah ah provisional relegation failing the French version of FFP. And you may be wondering, why is that got to do with Anything with Palace? Well, because it's because of our friend of the show, John Textor is a major shareholder in Lyon. So it could we could be getting some kind of transfer embargo or finance. There are possibilities. It's fairly remote.
00:17:14
officialgspn
just by mere association with texter as it these things can kind of happen when in football so it's the french have had their little go had their investigation and it very much depends if fifa get involved they have their investigation then the premiership one will start getting involved etc etc so this could get interesting over the next month or even the next six months or so uh any thoughts on that joe Disimmediate thoughts or having sort of read anything, really?
00:17:49
Joe Lodge
I'm not, I haven't read anything that's made me too alarmed about the possibility of Palace getting caught up in this. I think we know Palace are a very well-run club and exists slightly in arm's length from the rest of the eagle football group. I mean, I don't know the technicalities of a legislation that sees teams either get caught up or not caught up.
00:18:17
Joe Lodge
But yeah, I think Palace clearly ah ah managed to agree made agree a deal with Texas when he came in that involved him putting up loads of cash and actually having basically no power and Steve Parrish still controlling everything and that's the main reason why he wants to sell his shares.
00:18:35
Joe Lodge
his main complaint seems to be that certainly in France the way that these things are viewed too much on club by club basis where they should view it as a whole group if they are viewing it as a club rather than whole group in Pelis's case that's good We've not had any knockings of palace being done for FFP violations at any point. There's always been really sounds on that front. So and I'm not umm not too worried. I think the most likely implication for palace is that it speeds up the process of text of selling your shares because
00:19:14
Joe Lodge
He says, he's an interesting figure when everyone in these kind of situations comes up because he's very candid. He's very open in a way that feels almost unprofessional to the height of a business person. But he just says like, he just tells you exactly what his plan is all the time.
00:19:35
Joe Lodge
basically Leon have to show they've balanced their books by the end of the season to a certain extent. He says that involves raising a hundred million US dollars is what he's been told and that he will do that by selling his shares in Palace basically. That's going to be the major paid to drivers of it.
00:19:58
Joe Lodge
It's, I'm not sure if they'd count that as legitimate revenue towards Leon, go and not show the rules, work in France. His quote around the topic involved saying that the regulatory bodies of France are intelligent people that need to realise that large organisations, all clubs come to view, which smacked a bit of someone trial for murder, complimenting the excellent jury or something like that to me.
00:20:24
Joe Lodge
but Yeah, so I don't know if he's if he's worried that that won't actually be deemed legitimate, but it sounds like it could speed up Palace's texticism and re-drives home the extent to which that is probably a good thing Palace's point of view.
00:20:46
officialgspn
yeah Yeah, I was probably, I came to very much the same conclusion while reading through a lot of this and a lot of other articles very much saying the same thing. It will probably speed it up, but then we go into another problem, depending on how quickly that gets moved on, that we go into a kind of grace period where we can't do any transfer business. So it could theoretically they kind of bar us on January. We can do sales, but there would be very limited transfer movement, mainly it would be probably loan deals and a couple of freebies. So it could be kind of going from the pot into the fire kind of thing. so but yeah But very much the they classic American bravado
00:21:34
officialgspn
We'll be fine. Don't worry about it. We'll just plow through. It's going to be fine kind of attitude. I saw from Texas going, oh, well we won't be going down. Don't be silly. We're going to fight this and da, da, da, da. And it's like, you I think I was reading somewhere. They've got somewhere in the vein of 500 million euros in debt. So it's going to be almost a fire sale at Leon just to try and balance the books for the for January by the end of the season and this is kind of all due to the fairly poor TV rights that were negotiated for the French League as as soon as like PSG and stuff don't start qualifying for Europe Mbappe's gone nobody wants to watch the French League anymore funny that really when a big superstar suddenly start disappearing money starts drying up
00:22:32
officialgspn
So, but i yeah, I think the situation could get interesting, but I think it's at the moment, it's kind of a long shot. If there's going to be anything to do with Palace, because they're not directly in sort of one doesn't feed the other, it's just through him mainly. But we'll see what happens. I think it's still it's literally in the last couple of days that this has happened. So we very much have to wait and see and kind of hope for the best.
00:23:01
officialgspn
And kind of can we like get rid of text and now this is the perfect opportunity if we want to get rid of them is to get rid of him now. And with that, I think we'll probably take a quick break and do a final round up of the Palace players in international duty over the last 24 hours as this is the last international until the new year.
00:23:26
officialgspn
Yay, we don't have to worry about it anymore.
00:23:27
Joe Lodge
questions.
00:23:30

And with that, we move into our final section of the Davey Palace podcast, which is a round up of the the international games that Palace players were involved with last night, which were Muniers for Colombia in a World Cup qualifying action.
00:24:26
officialgspn
and Turner in goal for the US in the nation league concert calf quarterfinal stage second leg that is a mouthful please oh my god so joe what can there anything you want to add to any of this of how they'll played because as far as i know sort of uh columbia lost one nil and the us one four two over the and I think it was one nil from the previous day, so they went through relatively comfortably.
00:24:59
Joe Lodge
Yeah, co Colombia lost 1-0 in a fashion that were at a a ah loss performed by an Italian team in the late 90s or early 90s. You would roast a few eyebrows about the legitimacy of it. They were completely dominant and some hilarious misses from John Cordova, for the reason they didn't actually take the win against Ecuador, who opened the scoring fairly early on through a wonderful goal from Endo Valencia. I have to say I kind of remember him popping up again at the World Cup last time around and playing quite well and being surprised that he was still going and I was surprised again to see he was still going watching these highlights and then in a sort of microcosm of that
00:25:51
Joe Lodge
in this run I couldn't believe he kept on going and kept on going because he picks up the ball sort of quite deep near the halfway line and just sort of squeezes his way through about five Columbia defenders being the only man on the counter attack and strokes it in from the edge of the box. It's really nice. The upside of Palace is Daniel Munoz was not one of those five defenders that he once passed. He had nothing to do with it. It was on the other side of the pitch. And he played much better than he did in their game against Uruguay. Much more involved on the play. He made 53 passes. Looked sharp, looked quick, looked fit.
00:26:31
Joe Lodge
and should have had an assist to his name after putting in a ah ah really great little float across the back post which are Lewis Diaz headed against the post himself. So yeah I mean it was Columbia be disappointed, la so two losses in their international break, but less than a good qualifying position. It was a good performance. And most importantly of Palace, Daniel Munoz looked much improved. So I think i and that was all good. On the US game, I think Turner conceded too, but theyre kind of not really his fault, I think.
00:27:11
Joe Lodge
first one is both from Damari Gray, first one he can't stop, second one comes off the back of a parry that Turner made from a previous shot which isn't isn't great but it's not terrible either, it's not like he parries it straight into danger, he's getting away with some strength and uh great happens been a right place otherwise fairly solid great distribution again you've completed 94 percent of his passes brought back to him quite a lot four out of six with long balls so again a perfectly good performance for him which will boil his confidence coming back to sellhurst it's not
00:27:55
Joe Lodge
The quality isn't that great of USA, Jamaica. There are a few good players neither side, but it's not, let's say, the heavyweight clash that that same national matchup in 100m would be. But yeah, I think he did. He did a good job again.
00:28:17
officialgspn
yeah could yeah Yeah, he was very good for him. The first half, a couple of really good reaction saves to keep it. I think it was 3-0 at halftime. America was kind of cruising. No real issue. And and then suddenly in the second half, they just kind of stopped defending, really.
00:28:36
officialgspn
The first Damari Gray goal was pretty spectacular for him. So there's not much Turner could have done about it. And the other one was kind of a very, yeah, very much a weird deflections. He was caught on the ground. So it's like, okay, fine. Well, it's not much he can do about that one. And in the the Columbia game, yeah, the Ecuadorians were kind of the first, up until the goal, fairly dominant.
00:29:06
officialgspn
And just have just, yeah, they walked through them almost like Colombia weren't even there. It was very lackluster from them. And they just got really unlucky with some of their shots.
00:29:16
officialgspn
I think I watched the Cordoba one. This one you would have put your house on. This was point blank range. And somehow he manages to miss it. And I'm sitting there watching the highlights from the head of my hand.
00:29:28
officialgspn
Like I'm the manager going, what just like what did I just witness?
00:29:29
Joe Lodge
yeah yeah The only way to miss it was to miss the ball, which he did.
00:29:34
officialgspn
Mr. Bull completely. They had a penalty shout that he probably should have had as well. I think it was Cordoba again that kind of got pulled by two Ecuadorian defenders down and he saw the manage it the Colombian manager literally screaming at the ref or practically running on the pitch to go and throttle this guy. But yeah, but the most important thing, they all came back perfectly healthy. They had some good form.
00:30:03
officialgspn
we haven't added to our injury list.
00:30:05
Joe Lodge
but
00:30:06
officialgspn
That being said, on the other side, for our next game against Villa, they have a few more injuries to them. So that could be something to mention to them tomorrow, Joe, when you're doing the crossover.
00:30:22
officialgspn
Which, yes, by the way, Joe is going to be our representative. Palace podcasts are in the crossover with Villa tomorrow. So let's hope they are very welcoming and prepared to have a nicer bite with you.
00:30:36
Joe Lodge
Yeah, I would say.
00:30:37
officialgspn
And I think that's.
