Hi there everyone! First off, I want to say I am sorry for once again speaking part of the wrong date in the supplementary session! It's not the 5th today.  It's the 4th of February, as you can plainly see by the posting date being on the 4th. I didn't go back in time to post this. haha!

This video is a supplement to today's daily Bible reading. This is me reading the complete text of Numbers chapters 16, 17, and 20, which are the chapters that were covered in today's reading. I really felt led to share the details of what happened in these events and it would not have been sufficient for me to just tell you about them. I encouraged you to read the chapters yourselves or to listen to the supplementary audio podcast of me reading the chapters to you.

Thank you for being here.

Glory be to GOD MOST HIGH. May He receive all  honor, glory, faith, and obedience He is due, as we will hear about in the chapters I read to you here. May God bless you as you participate in this event this year as I am blessed by your being here with me.

Rebellion Against Moses

00:00:02
Speaker
and there everyone Today is February 5th, 2025, and this is my supplementary video to our daily reading where I am feeling led to read the entire chapters in the NIB version of Numbers, chapters 16, 17, and 20 to give anybody who is looking for that ah deeper understanding and more detail as to what occurred in the events that we read about today.
00:00:33
Speaker
Chapter 16 in Numbers. Korah, Dithon, and Abiram. Korah, son of Izar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Rubonites, Dithon and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and on son of Pele, became insolent and rose up against Moses.
00:01:00
Speaker
With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, you have gone too far. The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord's assembly?

Divine Test of Leadership

00:01:28
Speaker
When Moses heard this, he fell face down. Then he said to Cora and all his followers, in the morning, the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy. And he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses, he will cause to come near him. You, Cora, and all your followers are to do this.
00:01:56
Speaker
Take censors and tomorrow morning put burning coals and incense in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far. I just wanna remind us that the Levites are the ones who were set apart to help Aaron's family with the setting up and the taking down of the ark.
00:02:26
Speaker
Aaron's family is the priesthood and the Levites are the ones who are to serve in the in the tabernacle.
00:02:36
Speaker
Moses also said to Korah, now listen you Levites, isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord's tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?
00:02:55
Speaker
He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself. But now you're trying to get the priesthood too. It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him? Then Moses summoned Athan and Abraham, the sons of Elia. But they said, we will not come.

Defiance and Accusation

00:03:20
Speaker
Isn't it enough that you have brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us? Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you wanna treat these men like slaves? No, we will not come. Boy, how quickly they forget.
00:03:48
Speaker
You're saying that Moses is the one responsible for them not going into the land of milk and honey. How quickly they forget. Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.

Showdown and Divine Punishment

00:04:08
Speaker
Moses said to Cora, you and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow. You and they,
00:04:16
Speaker
and Aaron. Each man is to take his censor and put incense in it, 250 censors in all, and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censors also. So each of them took his censor, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of the meeting. When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition,
00:04:47
Speaker
to them at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The glory of the Lord appeared to the entire assembly. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.
00:05:06
Speaker
but Moses and Aaron fell face down and cried out, oh God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?

Plague and Atonement

00:05:20
Speaker
Then the Lord said to Moses, say to the assembly, move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
00:05:35
Speaker
He warned the assembly, move back from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all of their sins. So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children, and little ones at the entrances to their tents.
00:06:02
Speaker
Then Moses said, this is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea. If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.
00:06:17
Speaker
But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.
00:06:36
Speaker
As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households and all those associated with Quora together with their possessions. They went down alive into the realm of the dead with everything they owned. The earth closed over them and they perished and were gone from the community.
00:07:07
Speaker
At their cries, all of the Israelites around them fled, shouting, the earth is going to swallow us too. And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense. The Lord said to Moses, tell Eliezer, son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censors from the charred remains and scatter the coal some distance away, for the censors are holy.
00:07:37
Speaker
the censors of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives.
00:07:44
Speaker
Hammer the censors into sheets to overlay the altar for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be assigned to the Israelites. So Eliezer the priest collected the bronze censors brought by those who had been burned to death and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar.
00:08:07
Speaker
as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the Lord, or he would become like Korah and his followers.
00:08:26
Speaker
So we read a moment ago that these were Levites and they had already been given the task of coming near to the Lord and serving to help the family of Aaron, but they are not the priesthood. So they had no authority to bring these censors to the altar before the Lord. This was a task that was designated for the priesthood, the sons of Aaron and Aaron himself. And God was making that perfectly clear that it didn't matter who wanted to step up. It was not their place. The next day, the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. You have killed the Lord's people, they said. But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned towards the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord appeared.
00:09:24
Speaker
Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting and the Lord said to Moses, get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once. And they fell face down. Then Moses said to Aaron, take your sensor and put incense in it along with the burning holes from the altar and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out for the Lord. The plague has started.
00:09:51
Speaker
So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. But 14,700 people died from the plague in addition to those who had died because of Korah.
00:10:19
Speaker
Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, where the plague had stopped.
00:10:28
Speaker
I really love how moses ah how God came to Moses and Aaron's rescue. Those people were still rising up against God and taking it out on Moses. And Moses was innocent. And God came to his and Aaron's rescue.
00:10:47
Speaker
And I just thought that was so amazing that our loving God would come to their rescue knowing that they had not instigated this rebellion. And I was really moved to share these readings today. And that's why I'm doing this is because just how awesome and wonderful our God is. but He didn't just take it out on the the people and and give them their just due for rising up against him. He came and protected Moses and Aaron who were doing his work for him. He didn't just leave them there to suffer at their hand. Thank you, God.
00:11:27
Speaker
And that was the end of chapter 16.

Disobedience and Consequence

00:11:30
Speaker
All of that was in chapter 16. Now chapter 17 is called the budding of Aaron's staff. The Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and get 12 staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.
00:11:52
Speaker
On the staff of Levi, write Aaron's name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the Ark of the Covenant law where I met with you, where I meet with you. The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites.
00:12:21
Speaker
Look how God is is really just affirming. And he's not doing it for himself in this case. He's doing it to prove that he has chosen Moses and Aaron so that they will stop being persecuted.
00:12:36
Speaker
So Moses spoke to the Israelites and their leaders, gave him 12 staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. And Aaron's staff was among them.
00:12:49
Speaker
Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law. The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted it, but had butted, blossomed, and produced almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the Lord's presence to the Israelites, and they looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.
00:13:20
Speaker
The Lord said to Moses, put back Aaron's staff in front of the Ark of the Covenant law to be kept as a sign of the root to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me so that they will not die. And Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.
00:13:42
Speaker
And I think, no, I'll leave that for Julie, nevermind. The Israelites said to Moses, the Israelites said to Moses, we will die. We are lost. We are all lost. Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die. Are we all going to die?
00:14:05
Speaker
And then we did not cover chapter 18 in our reading today. So I will be skipping that.
00:14:22
Speaker
And we will head to chapter 20, water from the rock. In the first month, ah concern that me see how big that one's okay in the first month, the whole Israelite community arrived at the desert of Zinn and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
00:14:45
Speaker
Now there was no water for the community and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. They quarreled with Moses and said, if only we had died when our brothers fell before the Lord, why did you bring the Lord's community into this wilderness that we and our livestock should die here? Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.
00:15:14
Speaker
Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell face down and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord said to Moses, take the staff and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.
00:15:43
Speaker
So Moses took the staff from the Lord's presence, just as he commanded them. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock. And Moses said to them, listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock? Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out and the community and their livestock drank.
00:16:11
Speaker
But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, but trust because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them. These were the waters at Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord and where he was proved holy among them. Edom denies Israel passage.

Detour Through Edom

00:16:39
Speaker
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom saying, this is what your brother Israel says. You know about all the hardships that have come on us. Our ancestors went down into Egypt and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors. But when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.
00:17:08
Speaker
Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King's Highway and not turn to the right or the left until we have passed through your territory. But Edom answered, you may not pass through here. If you try, we will march out and attack you with sword.
00:17:33
Speaker
The Israelites replied, we will go along the main road. And if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot, nothing else. Again, they answered, you may not pass through. Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army. Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from him um them.
00:18:04
Speaker
The death of Aaron.

Aaron's Death and Mourning

00:18:07
Speaker
The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hore. At Mount Hore near the border of Edom, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I gave the Israelites because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. Get Aaron and his son Eliezer and take them up Mount Hore.
00:18:32
Speaker
Remove Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will die there. Moses did as the Lord commanded. They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community. Moses removed Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar.
00:18:53
Speaker
And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eliezer came down from the mountain. And then the whole community learned that Aaron had died. And when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, all the Israelites mourned for him for 30 days. And that is the end of the story for chapter 20.
00:19:19
Speaker
It wasn't as significant in chapter 20 but it was part of our day reading, and so i I went ahead and included that, but I really could have just done 16 and 17 And I hope that you are I'm glad that you joined with me today for this extra reading. And thank you for being here with me today. I already added my little bit of commentary for what happened there. And that was really just the main things that I wanted to point out. And then you can see also that our kids' Bible is not so different, but it it doesn't include all of the little details. And I wanted to be sure that those little details were made known for those of us who are mature enough to receive them.
00:20:02
Speaker
So thank you for being here with me and I hope you enjoyed today's additional video, additional session for those who are listening via podcast. Have a great rest of your day.
