Daily Bible Reading with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching (Audio only)

We are reading Numbers chapters 12-14 today. We will read about Miriam and Aaron fussing about Moses and see how God dealt with their behavior.  We will read about God's people arriving at the border of the land He promised them and see why they had to continue living in the desert for 40 years before being allowed to enter it. We will discuss how it feels when we have proven ourselves trustworthy and yet someone doesn't trust us, and discuss that this is how God felt when His people did not trust Him to give them the land after seeing all the amazing wonders he did to  take care of them up to this point. Let us be encouraged to always  trust in God, no matter how bad a situation seems, so we don't hurt God.  He has feelings, too.

Introduction and Bible Reading Plan

00:00:03
Speaker
Hi there, everyone. Today is Tuesday, February 3rd, 2025, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We're here to read the Bible today. We are going through and reading the entire Bible in one year, and the Bible that we are reading is the version put out by the Day by Day Kids Bible, which is written by Karen Henley.

Suitability and Personal Application

00:00:24
Speaker
If you are unfamiliar and just finding me on your favorite podcasting site or YouTube or on my site or on TikTok, I'll let you know that that Day by Day Kids Bible is a great overview of the entire Bible. So don't be discouraged that it says it's a kids Bible because it is awesome for adults too.

Tools for Tracking and Participation

00:00:45
Speaker
and We are going to be discussing personal application on how you can apply today's Bible reading to your life. and I will give you examples as to how God is also applying those daily Bible readings to my life. and If you are following along with me every day, then you may have a calendar.

Community Support and Engagement

00:01:06
Speaker
and I have mine here, and I have already put my sticker on for the February 3rd today to show that I've had my daily entry today. Now, if you have a downloaded copy of the calendar, I do have a download copy available for you for free on my website, and that can be found at under the heading of Read the Bible in One Year.
00:01:35
Speaker
I also have all of these recordings listed there on my site, so you will see below that a drop-down menu for February recordings and January. If you would like to support the event, I will send you a copy of that calendar along with a sheet of the same stickers that you see on my calendar for the month so that you can keep track of your daily commitment to read the Bible every day. It is absolutely voluntary. It is not necessary or required in any way. I do have that calendar available for download for you at no charge.
00:02:09
Speaker
If you would like to support the event with a monthly membership or by attending the live event with a paid registration, then you can do either of those from my site. I have the membership option available under the heading of part of the family in parentheses, memberships. And if you are interested in attending the live event, I have that set up as a tiered pricing event. So it is absolutely not necessary if you would like to attend the live event to pay to attend. I do have that and as an option where you just attend. It is only for those who feel led to do so.
00:02:46
Speaker
and the amounts for that are $10 or $15 for the month to attend, or you can select any amount of your choosing, or you can just attend. I'm happy to have everybody here. That's just an option for those who feel led.
00:03:02
Speaker
And then, as I said, if you choose to support the event, then I will send you a printed copy of the calendar on sugarcane paper as well as a set of those stickers for the month so that you can mark off your calendar. But you can mark off your calendar any way you choose if you are downloading that from my site with your own sticker or your ex or your smiley face or whatever you want to choose to mark off your daily commitment.

Personal Experience and Podcast Expansion

00:03:24
Speaker
The important part is that you are reading the Bible every day and that's our goal this year is to read the Bible every day and to read through the entire Bible so we know what happened.
00:03:36
Speaker
So I want to give you a little bit of ah update on how I'm doing with my ah setting up with this event since this is more of a conversational and personal event. It's ah grown from just ah an event to um a very personalized thing where I've gotten to know some of you and I really love knowing you guys. And so I wanted to share things that glorify God and to um Just to share and glorify God and to give you an update on what I'm doing So because some of it's a little bit funny, too
00:04:13
Speaker
So, you know, I told you you guys yesterday that I was working very hard at getting this event published on podcasts. So ah services such as Apple Podcast, I got it connected to. Today I got it connected to Podbean. I have it connected to Amazon Music and a host of other places, any place I can find to get this out there because I want to ah really spread the word about reading God's word.
00:04:40
Speaker
And I'm very passionate about that. That's why I'm hosting this event and putting it out there for you guys to be here with me. So I've been putting it on Spotify and I've been doing Spotify from the very beginning. I upload it every day. Sometimes I i forget a day and I get it done the next day, but I haven't had any views at all on Spotify and that's okay.

Podcast Challenges and Resolutions

00:05:01
Speaker
I'm not worried about it because it's only my job to plant the seeds. It's God's job to grow the seeds. So I wasn't really worried about it.
00:05:11
Speaker
and But I do check my analytics and I i go through and I look at to see if there have been any views and I go, oh, there's no views today. Okay. So I was talking with God this morning and I was thanking him for who he paired me up with yesterday as my partner at at work.
00:05:27
Speaker
And I said to ah him, I said, thank you God for sending me Maria yesterday. And I'm just curious to see who you will send me today. Who are you going to send me to talk to today? What am I going to do today that you have in my path? And today he sent me Maria again. And I told Maria I was going to include this story in today's a session.
00:05:51
Speaker
because God used her and it's really, like really funny. I'm the type of person, I love to help people. But the only way you can be helpful ah for people is if you have experienced a lot of difficulties and had problems with things. So I try to encourage people that if they get frustrated with the difficulties that they have ah trying to do things, you know people will say, if there's something that'll go wrong, it'll happen to me.
00:06:21
Speaker
Well, that's kind of me. But God uses those things because every time I've had to go through stuff, He puts people in my path that have the same issue. And then I say, oh, I know what to do about that. Let me tell you what I did. And they're like, wow, thank you for helping me. And then I feel really good because I love helping people.
00:06:43
Speaker
So i I was talking with Maria today and we were talking about how long our shifts were today and and she said that she was on a double and I was on a single today.
00:06:57
Speaker
And I said, oh, I'm so glad I'm only on a single. I am so tired. I've only gotten like four or five hours sleep the last couple of nights because I've been working on my podcast event. And she said, oh, you have a podcast? What do you do? And I said, oh, it's it's just a Bible event. And she said, I read the Bible.
00:07:17
Speaker
And I was like, oh, oh, oh. Now Maria and I have been co-workers for a little while, but just we hadn't had this conversation before. So I told her that i what I was doing. and And she said, well, where do you put it? And I said, well, what kind of phone do you have? and Because I don't want to just list off every single podcasting site. I'd rather narrow it down to what she potentially has and is using so I can tell her ah that I'm on whatever she's using. That was the goal.
00:07:44
Speaker
and she said she had an apple phone so i said do you have apple music and she said no i don't use apple music and i said well what about spotify she said oh yes i have spotify so uh i asked her at the end of our shift ah she was we were walking out together down the way and I asked her if she would like me to give her the information about my Spotify and she said here and she handed me her phone so I could type it in and look for it and I couldn't find me.
00:08:17
Speaker
And I was really frustrated. I was like, what? How could I not be on there? I am uploading these every single day. Where are they going? So I handed her back her phone and I said, you know, thank you for letting me look. I said, because this is how I find problems is ah is when people try to find me on something and then we find out it doesn't work because everything looks like it's fine from my end, but it wasn't. And they weren't clear on the Spotify app anywhere. It was really difficult to find that I had to activate or I had to enable my feed. And I was like, I've been uploading these every day looking for some kind of action and I'm okay if there's none.
00:09:05
Speaker
but there can never be any that's never turned on. So ah i I found Maria and i after I let her leave, she but went upstairs for her lunch and and I was you know busy trying to do this on my phone and I got it enabled and then it said it was enabled. So I went upstairs and I told her, I said, God used you today because I asked him,
00:09:31
Speaker
who he was going to send me. And I told him I was excited to see who he was going to send me. And I want you

Bible Reading: Miriam's Illness

00:09:36
Speaker
to know that God used you. And I'm going to tell people about that today because I love to give the glory to God. I said, God knew I needed you because I wore so hard on those podcast uploads.
00:09:48
Speaker
And it it just wasn't there. and And if it wasn't for the fact that Maria was interested in seeing it, I would not have known that it was off. So glory be to God that he sent Maria into my path so that she could help me get my Spotify turned on. So then she handed me back her phone and I looked it up and lo and behold, there I was. I'm on Spotify now.
00:10:14
Speaker
a month and three days later. I finally turned it on, I guess. So I just really wanted to share that. And I could not wait all day. That was my big story that I just really wanted to share with you. That God absolutely puts people into my path every single day. And today it was you, Maria. And so then when I got home and I looked at my Spotify, I had a view on Spotify. Thank you, Maria.
00:10:44
Speaker
If you're hearing this tomorrow or today or at any time, thank you so much. Now I have a view on Spotify and and I wouldn't have had that if not for for God putting Maria in my path. So thank you for listening to that. We are now nine minutes in and I haven't even started reading our Bible today. Today we are going to be reading in the book of Numbers and we have some very important um stories today.
00:11:14
Speaker
Now, can any of you remember how many years the Israelite people wandered in the desert before they were allowed to enter the Promised Land? If you said 40, you are right. But I never knew why it was 40.
00:11:35
Speaker
Now I know why. Because, spoiler alert, I have not read the entire Bible myself. And I've read a good bit, but i don't I have not read every single thing in the entire Bible. So this is one of the reasons why I wanted to host the event too, one of many, many reasons, is that this is good for me too.
00:11:53
Speaker
And so, as I've encouraged everybody to do, is that if you're looking for more detail in the stories, to head up the chapters in your full-size Bible and check it out. And this may be one of those times where you might be curious to go look it up because we're going to be reading from numbers, let's see, 12 and 13.
00:12:20
Speaker
and 14, so 12, 13, and 14 in numbers. And they're very powerful stories as far as I'm concerned. this is This account is very powerful. And we are going to see why it was 40 years that the people were not permitted to go into the land, why they traveled for 40 more years, for 40 years total, before God gave them permission to enter the promised land.
00:12:49
Speaker
And we're going to be reading a story about Miriam. And I had not ever heard this part either. I had i had heard, ah no, I had heard part of it, but I didn't remember. If I've read it, I don't remember. So you may want to read a little bit more detail. It just gives ah a little bit more detail into the story, a little more in depth. But I was very fascinated by what happened to Miriam.
00:13:17
Speaker
ah and And so I looked it up before I went to, before I am reading this here today. I did that earlier this afternoon. So let's get into our story. ah We are gonna be starting now and our first section is called Miriam Gets Sick. Moses' sister Miriam and their brother Aaron started making a fuss. They fussed at Moses because of the wife he married.
00:13:49
Speaker
Does God talk only to Moses? Hasn't he talked to us too? They said. Now Moses did not think he was the greatest. He did not think he was the most important. And I'm gonna interject here and say that in our full version Bible, it says that Moses was the most humble person who had ever lived and and and at all.
00:14:18
Speaker
So that was an incredible, uh, bit of detail in our, in the full version Bible. So I do want to encourage you to check out numbers chapter 12. Um, because I, they did a great job explaining that Moses was not proud, but he was apparently considered the most humble person who had ever lived up until the time. And it said, I think it even says that it will ever live in something like that.
00:14:48
Speaker
So Moses did not think he was the greatest and he did not think he was the most important. God spoke to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. I want all three of you to come to the worship tent, he said. So they went to the worship tent. God came down in the tall cloud. He came right to the front. He called for Aaron and Miriam. They stepped closer.
00:15:18
Speaker
Listen, said God, there are people who speak for me. I talk to them in dreams, but it's not this way with Moses. I talk right to him. I don't talk in dreams or riddles. He sees my shape. So why doesn't it scare you to fuss at him? God was angry with Aaron and Miriam. God laughed.
00:15:48
Speaker
The cloud went up from the tent. Miriam was left standing there with a bad skin sickness. Her skin had turned as white as snow. Aaron turned around and saw her and he said to Moses, please don't be angry with us. We have been foolish. Don't let Miriam die. Then Moses cried to God, please make Miriam well.
00:16:14
Speaker
God said, make her live outside the camp for a week. Then she can come back. So Miriam stayed out of the camp for a week. That week, the people didn't travel. After that, Miriam came back and she was well. Then the people traveled again.

Spies in Canaan: Faith and Doubt

00:16:40
Speaker
A look into the new land, Numbers chapter 13. God's people camped in a desert. There God told Moses, choose some men. Send them into the land of Canaan. Tell the men to look around the land. So Moses chose 12 leaders. Moses told them, go into the hill country and find out what the land is like. Find out if the people are strong or not. Find out what kind of towns they live in. See if the towns have walls.
00:17:13
Speaker
See if they are like forts. Look at the ground. See if it is good for growing food and find out if trees grow there and try to bring back some fruit from the land. So the 12 men set out. They looked all around the land. They found a valley where grapes were growing. They cut off a branch of grapes. It had one bunch of grapes hanging from it. They got some pomegranates and figs too.
00:17:43
Speaker
They put these fruits on a pole and two of the men carried the pole with the fruits. After 40 days, the 12 men came back to Moses and they told him all about the land. They showed him the fruit. It's a good land, they said. It will be easy to grow food there. There's more than enough for everyone. It's as if milk and honey flow out for people.
00:18:09
Speaker
But the people who live there are strong. The cities are very big and they are like forts. Caleb told the men to be quiet. He said, we should go into the land. We should take it. I'm sure we can do it. We can't fight those people, said the other man. They're stronger than we are. Those people are very big. We felt like grasshoppers next to them.
00:18:36
Speaker
Numbers 14, scared of the people. That night God's people cried. They fussed at Moses and Aaron. We wish we had died in Egypt, they said, or we wish we would die in the desert. Why is God taking us into this land? The people there will kill us. They'll take our wives and children to be theirs. It would be better to go back to Egypt.
00:19:05
Speaker
the people even said, let's choose another leader. Let's go back to Egypt. Moses and Aaron bowed down in prayer in front of the people. Joshua and Caleb were two of the twelve men who looked around Canaan.
00:19:23
Speaker
They said, the land is very good. If God is with us, he will lead us there. It's a land where milk and honey seem to flow out for the people. God will give us the land. Just don't turn against God. We'll win over those people, said Joshua and Caleb. Don't be scared of them. God is with us. But people talked about killing Joshua and Caleb.
00:19:54
Speaker
Then God's greatness came over the worship tent. God said to Moses, how long will this go on? How long will these people treat me as nothing? I've shown them wonders, ah that they chose not to believe me. I'll send a great sickness upon them. I'll get rid of them. Then I'll make your family into a nation. Your family will be stronger and greater than they ever were.
00:20:22
Speaker
But nations in Canaan have already heard about you, said Moses. They heard that we have seen you. They have heard that you lead your people with a tall cloud in the day, and they heard about the cloud of fire at night. What if you get rid of your people? Then these nations will say you couldn't lead your people, so you killed them in the desert. Show these nations you are strong, just like you said, Moses told God.
00:20:51
Speaker
You said you do not get angry in a hurry. You have more than enough love and you forgive sin. You do bring trouble to people for doing wrong, but your love is great. So forgive your people's sin. You forgave them before.
00:21:11
Speaker
I will forgive them, said God, just as you have asked me to do. But not one person who saw my wonders will go into Canaan. They saw the wonders I did in Egypt. They saw the wonders I did in the desert, but they didn't obey me. They tested me so they won't get to see the new land. But Caleb is different, said God.
00:21:38
Speaker
He follows me with his whole heart, so I will bring him into the land, I promise to my people. My people must turn around tomorrow, said God. They must go back into the desert. They must head back toward the Red Sea.

Consequences of Israel's Lack of Faith

00:21:57
Speaker
They said they would die in the desert, said God, so they will. Everyone who is 20 years old or more will die.
00:22:06
Speaker
they won't get into the They won't get to go into the Promised Land. Only Caleb and Joshua will get to go. My people said that their children would be taken by their enemies, but the children will get to enjoy the land. You will be shepherds in the desert for 40 years, said God. That is one year for each day that you looked at the Promised Land. I the Lord have said this so you can be sure I will do it.
00:22:37
Speaker
Now the 10 men who made everyone afraid got sick. They died. They were the men who had looked at the new land, but Joshua and Caleb did not get sick or die. Moses told all God's people what God had said. They cried and cried. The next morning they headed for God's promised land. We sinned, they said. We'll go into the land and take it now.
00:23:07
Speaker
It won't work, said Moses. You're not obeying God. Don't go. God won't be with you because you turned away from him. You'll be killed if you go in now. The people didn't listen. They kept right on going. They headed to the hill country, but Moses didn't go with them. Then their enemies came down from the hills. They jumped out at them and chased them far away.
00:23:38
Speaker
And that is the end of today's reading.
00:23:45
Speaker
So as we read these stories and we read the events of what happened, I've encouraged us to see ourselves in the people. This time I'd like us to see ourselves in God's place. What does it feel like when you have been honest and you have taken care of something or someone?
00:24:07
Speaker
and you have helped people and then they don't trust you and they act like you have been bad to them or mean to them or not doing the right thing. How does it feel when somebody doesn't believe you when you are telling the truth and they have no right they have no reason not to believe you? Do you not feel betrayed? Say, how can you not believe me?
00:24:32
Speaker
How can you think that I would have bad thoughts towards you? How can you think that I would hurt you? Sometimes people think that we hurt them and we don't mean to and it's not on purpose, but we that's not what we meant at all. And it's, they didn't understand what we were doing and we had we weren't hurting anybody. It does happen. Not a miscommunication where you you have hurt somebody, but people can interpret things incorrectly and think that we're being mean when that's not what we were doing at all.
00:25:01
Speaker
And when that happens, we think, why would you think that? What have I done in any way that could make you think that? This is the way God is feeling.

Reflections on Faith and Betrayal

00:25:12
Speaker
So when we experience betrayal from people, I want to encourage us to remember that God has experienced betrayal from his people and even from us. So when we don't choose to have faith in him, it is the same as what they are doing here.
00:25:30
Speaker
And it does not make God happy. It hurts. It hurts to us. And sometimes we prayed in the past, baby, or maybe you will in the future to have your heart hurt for what hurts God. It hurts God when his people don't have faith in him. And it hurts us when people don't have faith in us.
00:25:53
Speaker
As parents, we can we can experience that. So that may not be something that the kids are familiar with yet. But as adults, how many times have you been faithful to somebody and they didn't trust you? And you think, but I've done everything I could to show you my integrity. Let's look at that as how God feels when we also don't place our faith in Him. God was very hurt.
00:26:22
Speaker
I also want to step back a moment again and talk about Miriam and Aaron and how God said that he speaks to Moses differently. He's the only one that's ever been able to see God the way he did.
00:26:39
Speaker
And yet they thought that Moses was acting superior. And the Bible tells us that that was not so. And they immediately recognized their sin. You know how it feels, kids, when your parents call you up and say, get over here right now. You know you're in trouble, right?
00:26:59
Speaker
Can you imagine God calling you and standing you up in front of the worship tent? That is what he did with Miriam and Aaron. It says that you God called Aaron and Moses and Miriam to the worship tent. And then he called Miriam and Aaron and they stepped forward.
00:27:22
Speaker
I wanted to encourage us to read the the full version for some more detail because it elaborates a little bit more that why God gave Miriam the sickness for seven days and told her to stay out of the camp. and What it says is when Moses asked God to heal Miriam,
00:27:47
Speaker
God told him if her father had spit in her face, she would have been taken and put aside out of the town for seven days. So what God was saying is is that he should be shown no less respect because what Miriam was doing was disrespecting God and Aaron too. But apparently it was Miriam because she opened up her mouth and was being very rude and mean first.
00:28:17
Speaker
So I want us to caution against <unk> talking against people who seem to be, you know, doing what God is telling them to do, and we can be jealous of that and say, well, you know he's telling me to, and I don't want us to do that. We're supposed to be honoring, and God makes his choices as to who what jobs he gives to people. Everybody has their own job, and you'll have your own job too, and I have my own job. Everybody has their own tasks. And so I just wanted to put that out there, not to dwell on it too much, but just to bring that up. That was very important.
00:29:01
Speaker
It was very important that um God gave them 40 years, one year for each day that they did not that they had seen the Promised Land and didn't get to go into it. They spent 40 days, but now they would not get to see it. The people were said that they were afraid that their children would be taken away, but what they were doing was they were keeping their children from being able to enter the Promised Land. So God took away the people who
00:29:31
Speaker
were afraid and who weren't going to go and who didn't want to go in, but he let the children go in. So the children did not have to pay for the sin of their parents. So I thought that was also very gracious of God in this situation.

Daily Reflections and Birthday Anticipation

00:29:49
Speaker
And I think that's it. I think that's what we have. Oh, and I thought it was really wonderful of Moses to speak up. And he was always advocating for the people. When God would get angry and and he wanted to have consequences at times, Moses didn't argue about the 40 years, that's for sure. But it's I love how Moses talked to God and asked him for less punishment.
00:30:20
Speaker
And i just I thought that was just very caring of Moses to do that. And so I wanted us to be encouraged to care for others and to look out for them as well. And I think that is it.
00:30:39
Speaker
Well, I guess that's it for today. Thank you very much for joining me today. It's a little on the longer side, so I'm gonna try to cut it short here. Thank you for joining me and I hope that you have enjoyed today's reading and that you are encouraged to go check out some more details in your full version Bible if you are curious.
00:31:02
Speaker
And I thank you whether you are joining me on your favorite podcasting site or whether you have found me on YouTube. Oh, speaking of YouTube, ah for those of you listening on YouTube who are adults, I have been able to ah upload my feed as a podcast. So it is possible that you will be able to get notifications now. I don't think we can do comments. I'm not really sure how that works yet. I just submitted it twice, basically. Once I called the reading list, the the the list that these are under, I named it as a podcast now so that I think it's available, but I couldn't find it on YouTube Music.

i and it might be on apple meat and YouTube Music, it might be possible that with the audio version of the podcast, you I think you might be able to make comments, but I'm not sure yet because I haven't been able to find it yet. It's still processing as I record this. I just did that right before doing this recording.

So I'm going to play around with that and look at that so I can confirm. But I just wanted to put that out there. For those of you on YouTube, you may be able to, you will be able to access this on a podcast. And then there you may be able to make comment again. Since these are marked made for kids, it disables the comment section. And so if you are new to this station, you may not be aware of that.

I have been debating on whether to say anything, but tomorrow is my birthday and I will be 48 tomorrow. So I'm going to try to get this done earlier in the day because I'm going to get to go out for dinner to, I think I'm going to go to California Pizza Kitchen and have my pizza. But I love birthdays. I really do. They're fun. You get to go out and have dessert.
