Episode Introduction & Title Discussion

00:00:24
Speaker
the title for the episode as well the yeah i mean like let's do it okay but what do you want to say it and then i'll cut it out or does yeah matter i don't know trying to make sense of it all
00:00:45
Speaker
I don't know why that's so funny. It's not funny, but it is. When you, you know, obviously it's the word sense as in S-C-E-N-T-E-S.
00:00:56
Speaker
I know. know. Trying to make sense of it all.
00:01:04
Speaker
oh Bad puns. Oh, Lord. Sometimes your little titles have the bad puns in them. Sometimes they do. Sometimes do.
00:01:17
Speaker
Sometimes there could be worse ones that I avoid using. Is that what you're trying to tell me mine is? No. Okay. and I just like this is so, I don't know.
00:01:32
Speaker
It's been such a long day. I know what you mean. That's why I'm laughing so far. Get it out. Get it out. yeah Stop making sense, Molly.
00:01:47
Speaker
Nothing makes sense.

Introducing SoulPod & Episode Theme: 'Nose Sense'

00:01:52
Speaker
oh Anyway, welcome to SoulPod the podcast. My name is Molly.
00:01:59
Speaker
and My name is Christina. I it's just been long it's been a long day it's been a long week it's never ending the horrors persist uh-huh and we're here somehow anyway um yes so you will have seen the title you will have heard Christina
00:02:31
Speaker
Say the title and you will have heard me cackle like an idiot.
00:02:38
Speaker
Today we're talking about the nose sense. Yeah, the sensory, the the olfactory senses.
00:02:51
Speaker
be old factory you know, apostrophe. Ye old factory. That's what it should be. That should be. Ye old factory. Ye old, OL apostrophe. Ye old factory.
00:03:08
Speaker
But yeah yeah, this is, this is one that Christina like sprang on me kind of. yeah Sometimes I i get um hit with these little bursts of inspiration and I thought we could make an entire episode out

Aromatherapy & Natural Elements

00:03:25
Speaker
of this for sure. we tos We've actually like as you were describing to me like your line of thinking I realized like we've talked we've hit on like this general idea when it came to like terpenes and stuff.
00:03:41
Speaker
A lot of like aromatherapy is driven by, you know, plants and other products that contain terpenes. Okay.
00:03:53
Speaker
And so i was like, this is on point. It is, it is ah on brand. That's the word. This is on brand for us. um Yeah.
00:04:04
Speaker
So this will be good. Was that a little subset of our, ah the power of green episode? Yeah. I mean, we talked about it then, I think we talked about it like, Oh, when did we hit on it?
00:04:18
Speaker
In another episode after that. um Oh, probably the self-care tips for the end of the world. When we were trying to talk about how you can best care for yourself and terpenes being the thing that brings cortisol levels down.
00:04:33
Speaker
um Oh! i was so like that was That was brought up then too. So, yeah. Can't be doing that cortisol too much. Otherwise, you'll end up like you know, me.
00:04:47
Speaker
Don't say that. but Don't say that. I mean, I honestly, I honestly feel this way where I'm like, man, I had no idea though level to which like I could experience chronic pain directly because I have lived my entire life with like unchecked anxiety. Like if I had known it could get this bad,
00:05:13
Speaker
I wouldn't have, i I like, I, it's not like I wasn't worried about my own anxiety, but like, i just, I didn't treat it like it could cause such major problems. Yeah. You know? And I didn't like make it a priority to like fix the problem.
00:05:29
Speaker
Like I just, you know, tried to get by. living with the anxiety and like trying to exist for so long and then like yeah so now I'm like on the flip side the anxiety is like mostly gone most of the time and uh I have all the pain that's left over and so like I literally have had that thought of just like god I didn't take it seriously enough I had no idea how bad this could get yeah so man yes we love chronically ill girlies
00:06:02
Speaker
yeah we are We are here for the chronically ill girlies. We feel you. We see you. yeah We commiserate. We commiserate with the chronic pain, the chronic illness, the chronic fatigue.
00:06:14
Speaker
We got it. We're there with you. um But.

Favorite Aromatherapy Scents

00:06:19
Speaker
So, yeah. As you were getting on the topic of aromatherapy, what are your favorite smells for aromatherapy and what what do they help you with?
00:06:29
Speaker
ah Well, um See, when I think of aromatherapy, I think of, like, spa stuff. And, like, I haven't done a whole lot of spa stuff, like, outside of straight-up massages.
00:06:43
Speaker
um But I have gotten, like, one or two, like, facial, like, treatments done. And both of those times, I think, no, at least one of those times, there was, like, this marshmallow product. Ooh.
00:07:01
Speaker
And I was like, this is incredible. it like this is It's like not a typical aromatherapy spa scent. But like, oh my God, if you ever have the option to get like marshmallow face mask.
00:07:14
Speaker
Oh my God. It's so like, it's so subtle. It's not too overpowering. And it's so sweet. It's beautiful. i loved it. But like, I also love eucalyptus, which like a classic.
00:07:29
Speaker
Lavender, obviously, is a classic. And a lot of florals I really enjoy. ah really, really do. oh And then there's one that i don't I don't think this is one that like goes under the aromatherapy category, but it is one of the first things that I thought of when you said that you wanted to talk about scent. And I think...
00:07:55
Speaker
i will bring it I will mention what it is, but we'll talk about it later because it's heavily associated with memories for me. And that scent is cedar. Okay. yep Yeah. so Yeah. So those are some of my favorites, I would say. i also, i mean, like we've talked about incenses and stuff. So like there's a lot of different scents that I find ah really, really lovely.
00:08:19
Speaker
But like, yeah, I don't have a whole lot of experience with

Aromatherapy Methods & Experiences

00:08:22
Speaker
like a stature. aromatherapy specifically neither do I um But I will say the aromatherapy that i would associate with more than like spa treatment things would be like those, um you know, like, I mean, candles can be considered aromatherapy, like specific smells might be, you know, aimed towards relaxation or, yeah you know, those kind of things.
00:08:55
Speaker
Yeah. with the terpenes like the ones that are relaxing are the ones that have the terpenes and then um i want to call them steamers but i don't know what the hell they're called it's like a diffuser i guess a diffuser is oh like a like an oil diffuser like an oil diffuser yeah that kind of thing oil warmer mm-hmm yeah um the little wax warmers yeah Yeah, yeah.
00:09:20
Speaker
know what you mean. So I'm guessing that there are specific scents that are, you know, sold to, you know, benefit you in a certain way. Right. Yeah. Like some that people even, will like, put you to sleep.
00:09:34
Speaker
yeah yeah and then there's like if you were to smell the essential oil of like lemon or something like that it's supposed to help wake you up right yeah or any of the citrus smells you know yeah citrusy actually i think eucalyptus even though it's like it is relaxing it is like more on the invigorating side um for sure but like yeah lemon Eucalyptus

Essential Oils: Uses & Cautions

00:10:01
Speaker
mint.
00:10:01
Speaker
Mint, I think, would be... Peppermint. Yeah, for sure. Zippy one. that's That's a good word for it. Zippy. Zingy. Zingy. Zippy. Zippy and zingy. um Yeah, yeah. um But also, I really like the ah ah sleepy time ones.
00:10:23
Speaker
Like lavender. o that old classic a lavender is definitely and aromatherapy like oh yeah scent you know what now that i'm thinking about it i'm like i think aromatherapy i think like professionals but then i'm like wait what about like literally like the scented salt scrubs that i have in my shower potentially sure like the dr teal's um tubs of scrub yeah I literally have one that is lavender scented for the evening if I'm taking an evening shower and I want to like help relax myself.
00:10:56
Speaker
Tubbo scrub. Tubbo scrub. And then one that's eucalyptus and it's meant for like, you know, a little bit of an energy, like a morning shower type of thing. Yeah, yeah. And I was just talking about, like, when we did the Ostara episode, I was talking about the Sakura or whatever it's called. Sakura.
00:11:14
Speaker
Sakura. Sakura. I don't know how to say Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that is a body scrub that I also own, and it's called Rub, Rub, Rub. Yeah, I remember.
00:11:27
Speaker
Yep. And that one, oh, yum. Anyhow. so good. But, like... The use of essential oils, especially in the Wu community, such as we are you know, like involved with. I've never really been a big user of the essential oils.
00:11:47
Speaker
Right. I've always just been in like, what are you even supposed to do with them? Because like some people I know, like i mean, I don't think, I don't know, actually. I could be wrong, but I feel like some people are like, I ingest them, and I'm like, are you killing yourself?
00:12:03
Speaker
Like, what's happening? But I'm like, I don't know. No, there's certainly one better. I could be mixing it up with, like, people who have, like, CBD oils that they do actually, like, consume.
00:12:18
Speaker
um Like, i don't know, because it just feels so far outside the realm of, like, my own experience. I've only ever used essential oils before. for like pest repellent ah yeah oh my god yeah peppermint pepperminowmin and citronella yeah yeah no I'm sure that there are some essential oils that are intended for like or that are food related or food safe food grade whatever you want to call it on that that can be adjusted yeah they could go into like your tea in tea or in like
00:12:56
Speaker
And like, ah um' I don't know the first, know why the first thing I thought of was like to put it in, put it in like a cake or like icing or something. I don't know to flavor it, but I'm like, no. Like lavender, I believe is ingestible. Right. I mean, obviously, cause they have teas that are lavender. don't know if it is.
00:13:14
Speaker
i don't know if it is. and i mean, I don't, I don't know if like, there's like some lavender oils that are not meant to be ingested in some that could be. um Please somebody tell us.
00:13:25
Speaker
Well, like, let me put this out there. So we use oils in cooking and sunflower oil and like macadamia nut oil, olive oil, all those type of oils are all ingestible and they are gotten out of a plant or out of a substance, know, out of something that grows.
00:13:43
Speaker
yeah um in There's a couple different methods that they can extract the oil, but basically if it's if it's a plant like lavender, And you're using lavender in your tea.
00:13:54
Speaker
But you if you extract the oil. For different purposes. that you know There's no reason why. as long as there are no other ingredients. In it that are not safe. but I'm just like.
00:14:06
Speaker
I don't know. Like I said. I don't use essential oils. Enough to to be able to. and Not even enough. I don't use them like at all. The way that like witches typically use them. like I have occasionally. Like.
00:14:21
Speaker
tipped a little bit into like spell jar or like a floor wash or whatever. but that's completely different than like knowing the exact proportions to put um your concentrated essential oil into a carrier oil that you could like dab onto your skin.
00:14:39
Speaker
Because there's some oils that will burn you if you don't use the right concentration to yeah ah carrier oil ratio Right. So like, I'm just like, and I'm like, I don't even want to go there. Right.
00:14:51
Speaker
i'll get I'll buy some like pre-prepared oils that some witch is selling on Etsy. But like not I will not do it myself because I will fuck it up. you know Right. Unless ill burn my skin he online that you that is supposed to be safe or something. but it But how am I supposed to know? That's the thing. I'm like, yeah there's so much...
00:15:12
Speaker
like i It's an understatement to say there's so much misinformation out there. That's true. And I'm like, I am not, unless it's a person who has done it before that I trust, and they're telling me what to do, like what proportions to use, I'm not du i'm not trusting it.
00:15:31
Speaker
I just, not for myself. No, no, thank you. Perfectly understandable. But like you said, there are like some witches that sell... per like well perfume oils or whatever like you roll on the little oils are just like ones that are like you know they've got like the witchy like additions like herbs and crystals and things and ah like I like those because they got the good vibes yeah yeah yeah and they're usually made with an intention and the ingredients in them have specific meanings and uses and things like that so exactly ah yeah um
00:16:09
Speaker
So where are you with perfume? Like, do you like to use perfumes? but like, it's much akin to like, honestly, much akin to like the witchy oils that I have. It's like most of the time i will forget to, spritz some before i walk out the door, you know?
00:16:33
Speaker
and like, it's just, I mean, it's just my, you know, brand of ADHD. Yeah. yeah um but I enjoy them and like I don't buy i think if I found like a particular perfume that i loved even if it was like a designer um luxury brand and it was expensive like I might splurge on it because that's like kind of my personality I do like expensive things I don't mind it's like worth the investment to me yes but like I've not found one like that you know but like
00:17:09
Speaker
you know I've got like a few different like little perfumes or spray. There's one that's like, I'm not going to call it a perfume because it's like technically like a spray deodorant, but it's by Aesop, the brand.
00:17:23
Speaker
Okay. And it's ah like a sage eucalyptus
00:17:30
Speaker
scent. And sage, i like we can add sage to the list of scents that absolutely... Make me happy. Even though... I mean, I guess there are probably oils that are sage oils.
00:17:45
Speaker
I just haven't seen them. But yeah. They're... There are certain perfumes that, um I mean, the funny thing is, I like a lot of different scents.
00:17:58
Speaker
I like a lot of different perfumes. And yeah I never stick with one like long enough for to become like my signature smell or anything like that. you know Yeah, you like switch it up.
00:18:11
Speaker
Yeah. And I don't wear them that frequently. so except I'll say one thing. um I fell in love with a scent called Amazing Grace, which is made by a company called Philosophy.

Perfumes & Personal Identity

00:18:25
Speaker
and know them. Yeah. And Amazing Grace. um I bought it. one time, like sight unseen. I didn't smell it or anything. I was watching QVC a lot.
00:18:37
Speaker
Oh my God. The 90s thing in the world. Yeah. And they'd had um the creator of that brand on there and she was talking about Amazing Grace and they were just trying to describe the smell. And so like when you're selling that kind of stuff on TV, it's really hard to like get, you know,
00:18:57
Speaker
the idea across of what is this thing smell like, but they were making such a thing of it. They were like really, really explaining it in such a way that it made me really want to try it. So I went ahead and ordered some stuff and I have been using that body wash for years. Yeah. Yeah.
00:19:16
Speaker
And I love it. And like, but you think does it also come as a perfume or? Yes. Yeah. Okay. There's ah a plethora of products that they make that had that scent. Okay. um And so the body wash is also a shampoo could be either. Yeah.
00:19:32
Speaker
And there's a lotion that they make with that scent and there's a perfume. And I think there might be one or two other products. I don't really know for sure. But um the thing is that I have become nose blind to it.
00:19:45
Speaker
So like I can smell it sometimes when I first pump it out into my wash rag. Like when it wafts. Yeah. Really strongly. Yeah. I know that it's in my skin, like, but I can't really smell it when I, when I'm trying to like breathe it in. So it really sucks because I don't get that pleasure, that enjoyment out of the smell.
00:20:08
Speaker
Yeah. um And then it's like, I might forget that I have that smell on me because of the body wash and I might use a perfume. And so like, then are they, you know, clashing, clashing or, you know, canceling each other out or any of that.
00:20:23
Speaker
um but there are some perfumes that you know i guess i guess if somebody was around me enough and got close enough to smell that body wash on my skin they might start associating that scent with me like me me with that scent um but there are other perfumes that are ah you know that are out there that i associate with other people like a lot um I'm trying to remember the one that my grandma used to wear. She bought for me.
00:20:54
Speaker
um i think it was an Oscar de la Renta scent. Shalimar? Well, there was a, she did use one called Shalimar because I remember her saying that one. But I don't think that it's the same as an Oscar de la Renta.
00:21:08
Speaker
have no clue. Do, do, do. anyhow so there was that and then my one good friend from church that i knew during my high school years who um was also in like this the one year that i went to seminary because i didn't go like all like right all four years or whatever ah she would walk in in the morning wearing this perfume and it just it just started making me obsessed it was called eternity oh and i'm trying to remember who
00:21:39
Speaker
makes it because it's a high end um do you remember like what the scent was oh yeah it's called eternity no no no no like what the actual no like what the actual like notes were um like what the i i am not at all good at explaining those things well so like you don't like because it'll say the name like most perfumes will say like eternity and then it'll say like a summary of like what the like primary okay so I'm gonna read you what I'm finding online okay uh it's a romantic floral scent uh it was introduced in 1988 um anyhow she wore that every day and I just used to just oh oh my god flip out about it like oh and then I started to use like I bought some and I started to use it and on me it did not smell the same
00:22:35
Speaker
because everybody's body chemistry is different right yes it didn't smell quite the same so i kind of started like spraying it on my clothes instead instead but it just i never and never used it that much after that because it wouldn't like don't like directly combine with your skin right yeah that makes sense i never made a habit out of using that one Um, but she had also years later sent me a package cause she was making crystal like, you know, jewelry and she had a little website for it and everything. But, uh, I ordered a couple of things from her and when she shipped them to me, the tissue paper that they were packed in, she had sprayed a perfume the tissue paper.
00:23:22
Speaker
And it, another one, I was just like, holy crap, what is that? It smells so good. I loved it. And that one was Poison. by Christian Dior and that one oh it's also semi floral and I would say it's kind of just more sweet like I love sweet smelling perfumes yeah um and I also love citrusy smelling perfumes but yeah it has to be a sweet smell and this one like Eternity wasn't really a sweet smell but like this one was and I was dying and I was just like oh my god what is this one
00:24:01
Speaker
So I own both of those, Eternity and Poison, but I don't use them very much. They're expensive. And I'm sure that by now they're so old, they probably don't smell right anyways.
00:24:11
Speaker
but Probably, yeah. on But she also had told me something one time that I thought was just the coolest idea ever. Because this woman, if she's listening, because I know she has listened to our podcast. Yeah.
00:24:29
Speaker
She's iconic. And like, she has the best brain, i think, of anybody I know. but Honestly, honestly, I mean, I i know what you mean. um So this thing she told me one time stuck with me for, it's been a long, long time since she told me. so I wonder if she even remembers that she told me this.
00:24:48
Speaker
But she would pick a new perfume every single time she was going on a vacation somewhere.

Scents & Memory Association

00:24:54
Speaker
or a trip and she would use that perfume during that trip like only that one perfume and then it would help create memories where if you used it in the future and smelled it it would bring back the memories of that trip that vacation isn't that cool yeah that's great it is awesome i love that idea it is magic it literally is it literally is
00:25:20
Speaker
who It's such a good idea. so like go to the, you know, perfume counter and smell a few things and see if there's something you that you like. If you're going on a trip somewhere and you know, yeah buy yourself a little bottle of it and yeah use that during the trip and just make memories for yourself.
00:25:37
Speaker
Yeah. I've done the same thing with music though. Yeah. Where I'll like listen to a particular album on a particular trip and then forever and always that album will make me think of that vacation.
00:25:48
Speaker
Definitely. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. um i was going to say, when you were talking about all these like body products and stuff, it reminded me of another like cup, like pear. It's not pear like the fruit, but kind of.
00:26:04
Speaker
um But like these two products that I have that are by the same brand that I had to look up because I was like, what is the scent on them? Like, because it's not really on the bottle, but like,
00:26:16
Speaker
apparently it's in all of their products, they use the same same single scent. um And so the the brand is Flamingo and I have their daily moisturizer, like lotion, and then their deep nourishing, like cream.
00:26:32
Speaker
here It's like a body butter. um And what they've described for their scent is all of our body moisture shares a signature scent of vetiver, bergamot,
00:26:45
Speaker
Jasmine, lavender, and Asian pear. Oh my. It is. That sounds awesome. Divine. Where do you get that from? i found it at Target. Like last year or the year before. can't remember exactly when.
00:26:59
Speaker
So the brand is called Flamingo? Yeah, but it's like a dark green bottle. Or like the all the packaging is like dark green. Okay. Yeah.
00:27:10
Speaker
But I, you know reading that made me remember like Bergamot is another one. Bergamot. Bergamot, yeah. Bergamot. um I'm a big fan of Bergamot, and I don't really know what vetiver is, um but I feel like I see it on things that I think smell good all the time. Yeah.
00:27:33
Speaker
Yeah. um That was actually the inspiration for this topic for me, was ah listening to the Waba episode Macy did about Venever.
00:27:44
Speaker
that and How long ago was that? Because I don't remember anything about it. Early in 2023. So January, possibly February. I don't know how far into the year I am. I'll need to go look at it again or listen to it again.
00:27:59
Speaker
So I was also... you know, you know, when you a little bit on yeah trying to remember the notes that I wanted to send you regarding scent and stuff.
00:28:12
Speaker
And it's like, you know, to go along the lines of what I was talking about with using and a you know, a specific perfume on a trip ah so that, you know, you can make memories for yourself. Right.

Scents Triggering Memories

00:28:23
Speaker
Isn't it crazy how sometimes you can smell something random that will trigger memories in you from like childhood. And you're like, holy crap. Like,
00:28:32
Speaker
what is that smell? you know, like, Oh my gosh. And that's happened to me a few times, but sometimes I'll just remember a smell yeah without smelling it.
00:28:43
Speaker
And like that would trigger our memory. It's really weird how that works. Yeah. I don't really understand that. I know. I don't know how that happens.
00:28:53
Speaker
Right. Like I was saying about cedar being a thing that really takes me back to childhood. Yeah, it's not necessarily because of any particular perfume or candle or anything.
00:29:07
Speaker
But like, um very specifically, because I had this box that was like, just like a keepsake box. It wasn't even it wasn't a jewelry box. It didn't have any, like, lining on the inside or anything. It was straight wood.
00:29:21
Speaker
And it was made out of cedar. And it never lost, like, the strong scent. And i I enjoyed it so much. i loved it so much. I would open this box and I would just take a whiff.
00:29:33
Speaker
I don't remember what it was that something had cedar in it from my childhood as well. who um I feel like it probably was a I mean, it is...
00:29:45
Speaker
um
00:29:48
Speaker
Okay. i like I don't know what I'm talking about here, but like I will say from Downton Abbey, you hear about the fact that they're um they have a storage space in the attic that's cedar-lined cupboards, and it's specifically to keep moths out.
00:30:08
Speaker
Right. And so, like, I wonder if that's just been, like, a thing that has been used for storage boxes, for, like, construction of wardrobes, like, things like that, where it's just, like, cedar is the go-to to help protect your clothes.
00:30:26
Speaker
Yeah, I think um And so, like, it's it doesn't, basically, all that to say, it does not surprise me. Right. I think, I think it's a lot of people's childhood, like said memories. Yeah. I'm pretty sure that my grandmother had one of the bedrooms in her, it's not a basement.
00:30:48
Speaker
It's like a lower level walkout basement. That is a basement. Yeah. um She, when they finished that part of the house, they had put a couple of bedrooms and a living room and a kitchen and um God, how much money did this lady have? Jesus. Well, it was my grandfather. like step-grandpa.
00:31:11
Speaker
Wow. One of the bedrooms had cedar-lined closet. Yeah. Yeah. I'm pretty sure. Yeah. yeah God, can we just talk for a moment about the like absolute like mystery that grandparents closets hold like just like not even that they're necessarily storing anything that's mysterious but like literally it's just like when you think about like my grandparents closets it's like it feels like a place of mystery in in my mind in my memory interesting i don't know why i don't know why yeah no i think i i think i understand what you mean
00:31:58
Speaker
I'm so glad because I feel like I'm insane right now trying to describe this. No, no, Oh my God. Yeah. But when you said cedar lined closet and like, you know, I'm thinking of again, Downton Abbey with the cedar lined cupboards that they refer to.
00:32:13
Speaker
ah Like, I'm like, I can, i I don't think that my, any of my grandparents' homes had cedar lined closet, but I can absolutely picture what you're talking about. Mm-hmm.
00:32:28
Speaker
as as ah As though it's like something that I must have come across at some point. have no idea where. But... Are they bowling upstairs again? Yeah, they're bowling upstairs again. even um Yeah.
00:32:44
Speaker
Thursday night bowling. Oh my god. oh my god. Wait. Oh, we need to interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to congratulate me on two years ago signing my mortgage.
00:32:57
Speaker
Oh my god, it's two years ago today! Two years ago today, baby! April 3rd. Happy anniversary and congratulations. Happy mortgageversary.
00:33:08
Speaker
That's awesome. Oh my god, what a great time. Yeah, you know you know what anniversary is coming up for me in two days? Da baby.
00:33:20
Speaker
What? Da baby? Her? Oh. oh I was like, I don't know that. Like that's actually three, days three days, I believe after the, Oh, well then that's, then that's are coming up still. a Yeah.
00:33:34
Speaker
April 5th would be what I consider the anniversary of my witchy awakening. Oh my God. And it would be six years. Six years. is this year Six years. Six years. Yeah.
00:33:49
Speaker
crazy I wish that I had, i wish that I had like a particular date that I could pinpoint my like a awakening anniversary on. oh Mine was just this slow like transition into like, oh, I think I worship the moon now. Amazing.
00:34:09
Speaker
god I love that. April 5th.
00:34:15
Speaker
Anyway, sorry. I fully distracted us when we said we were going to stay focused today. That's okay. That's okay. cause you talked Anyway, congratular, congrativersaries. Congrativersaries for both of us.
00:34:28
Speaker
And happy gotcha day for Maisie. think it was April 8th. I'll have to double check, but I think it was April eight Happy Gotcha Day to the baby, the purple Everybody, when you're listening to this, it's either going to be like the next day or the day of you're listening because nobody listens past two days after we release an episode.
00:34:54
Speaker
Just kidding, that's not true. but that's not making it I'm just being stupid. oh But yeah, say Happy Gotcha Day to Maisie the baby.
00:35:06
Speaker
The sweet potato. She is a sweet potato. is a sweet potato. That is the perfect little name for her. Yeah.

Witchy Uses of Essential Oils

00:35:14
Speaker
And she got the biggest ears on the earth. She's the best.
00:35:20
Speaker
But, you know, reflecting on my awakening anniversary the first thing that I did well like you know like you remembered that it was a full moon just totally forgot that but and the reason why that makes sense to me is because I know I asked you like okay so what would you do for a moon full moon ritual or something right well that's why I remember that yeah yeah and you're telling me to use like like anoint a candle with like a
00:35:53
Speaker
and ah an oil of some sort yeah an essential oil or yeah olive oil yeah and i think all i had at the time was it was olive oil because i really didn't use oils for anything um but there's you know there you go you know we which is you are using these essential oils for all kinds of stuff anointing a candle to birds it's true what i mean i'm gonna ask our listeners what is your favorite scent to anoint a candle with like what oil is the best one like what do you love yeah and i know the answers are gonna probably vary depending on intention true um
00:36:36
Speaker
But like, so if you, if you do write us or call us or whatever, don't don't call us. Don't think we have a phone number to call, but anyway. No, you can email our email.
00:36:49
Speaker
Tell us what the scent is and what the intention is that goes with it. I'm so curious about that. Yeah. For Richie purposes, you know. Yeah. And like, what's, what's like your go-to like, cause you know, sometimes I guess sometimes you don't necessarily have to have like,
00:37:05
Speaker
a particular intention but you just want to like burn something to just sort of get into a meditative state like do you have a go-to oil for that let us know we want to know so in people's practices what is the you know like i want people to communicate like tell us what is your favorite scent to use in your practice and what is the intention behind the scent And also, like, don't limit it, i guess, to essential oils because, like, right right that's why you know, incenses.
00:37:36
Speaker
Yeah, like, incenses, too, because, like, there's I feel like there's a broader variety of um incense scents than essential oils, or at least for, like, usage right purposes.
00:37:50
Speaker
Because, yeah, essential oils you're going to hold on to and be a little more, like, ah careful with, like, your consumption of them. Mm-hmm. Incense sticks are so cheap. but Right.
00:38:02
Speaker
So, yeah. Tell us, tell us. Tell us on Instagram or email. Or go to Patreon. And join our Patreon and put it in the comments of a random post.
00:38:17
Speaker
Yeah, fuck us all up with that kind of shit. Except we 100% know what you mean. Because we asked for it. So...
00:38:29
Speaker
yeah so and then you know we have the proverbial you know holiday scents and things that oh my god season will seasonal scents seasonal scents that is exactly the boys yeah that and then you know obviously like cinnamon apple for like the holidays right yeah or pine Yeah, there's so many different ones. Balsam, fir, fireplace. Oh yeah, the Christmas tree, the actual Christmas tree scent.
00:38:59
Speaker
Vanilla hot cocoa. All the like... ah i i am just remembering the like... It has to have been a meme, although it could have been totally real for all I know.
00:39:15
Speaker
But like be a Yankee candle scents that like... have like varying degrees, increasing degrees of abstraction where it's like you go from like something as straightforward as like, like a cinnamon candle or, you know, whatever, like a, like a hot cocoa candle.
00:39:40
Speaker
You're like, okay, I know what hot cocoa is supposed to smell like. And then you get like another degree of abstract where it's like, evening fireplace and you get like further abstract which is like summer breeze yeah it's like what the hell that yeah like i mean seashore but the thing is like seashore is so interesting because i think of seashore and i'm like That doesn't go in a candle.
00:40:08
Speaker
It's like salt and dead fish and sweaty bodies
00:40:16
Speaker
and suntan lotion. Coconut. Yeah. Coconut and suntan lotion. um I do love coconut though. Oh my God. Give me some banana boat butt right now. Yum. Yum. I love the banana boat butt.
00:40:31
Speaker
Yeah. It's iconic. Yeah, dude. Yeah. Oh, seriously. um my god. Coppertone had the baby's butt.
00:40:44
Speaker
Remember that? that's right. Was that not Banana Boat? I think Coppertone was the one. What was Banana Boat? What did Banana Boat logo look like? don't remember. Why I thinking? Was it actually a Banana Boat?
00:40:57
Speaker
I don't think so. Banana Boat. Now I want to look it too.
00:41:06
Speaker
No, I already know what you're going to tell No, no you don't because I mistyped it. I typed banana boar. How do you spell that? B-O-A-R boar?
00:41:18
Speaker
Oh my god. No, banana boat is just a weird yellow logo. It's not anything special. It's Pappertone is the one you were thinking of with the butt.
00:41:30
Speaker
Well, banana boat's more of a fun name. Coppertone is stupid. Literally, if you're doing sunscreen, you're trying to not get copper.
00:41:42
Speaker
Also, i only typed banana boat. And I have an option that says, do you mean the sunscreen? But the first thing I get actual banana boats.
00:41:56
Speaker
See, I thought you were going to show me something like a banana hammock. no God. No God. thought that's what was going to pop up when you Googled Banana Boat. I'm like, oh, don't tell me. It's a freaking song for news. Oh my God.
00:42:12
Speaker
We are SoulPod the podcast. Welcome to our ADHD madness. Every time, even when we say that we're going to pay attention, that we're going to stay focused, it does not come to fruition.
00:42:25
Speaker
Oh my god. Anyway. know but no, i love coconut. And I do actually like the sunscreen smell. Anyway. No, it's on it's on topic because it's it's about the smells. It's true.
00:42:37
Speaker
It's true. Sunscreen. it's ah It's another, like, it well that's ah yet again another like memory association. Yeah.
00:42:46
Speaker
remember things. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.
00:42:54
Speaker
oh lord yeah hey i just remembered something else funny like you when you're talking about cedar yeah that also might spring some you know cedar being ah ma a moth deterrent or whatever yeah that might also bring to mind what moth balls smell like for people yeah you I think mothballs don't smell bad, but other people associate it with like probably negative memories or

Nostalgic Scents & Generational Memories

00:43:22
Speaker
something. because Well, like I think it's just like not really like a pleasant smell.
00:43:28
Speaker
It is. It's kind of perfumey. It's not bad. Well, like that's the thing is i don't I don't think my family ever needed to use mothballs. Yeah. And so I don't know what they actually smell like. But when I hear the context in which they're described, like the room smelled like mothballs, it's like not in a positive way.
00:43:48
Speaker
Right. And that's what I'm saying. It's like. Or it's like it's like a grandma's house. Yes. It brings to mind like old people smells or something like that. Mothballs and Chanel number five. Lord.
00:44:02
Speaker
lord um but anyway okay so let me try and get my brain back on track where we were talking oh so we were we were on the seasonal scent yes pathway when i derailed it with yankee candle talk that's okay but yes do you think there are specific scents associated with like springtime aside from like all the florals yeah
00:44:34
Speaker
Well, I mean, are you talking like scents that occur no matter where or scents that are only like in candles and oils and incenses?
00:44:46
Speaker
Scents that can occur anywhere. Okay. Because like when I think of springtime, I think of like like new growth. Yeah. And like it's a really mild scent because new growth is always like a mild flavor.
00:45:00
Speaker
If you're like like the like the early spring vegetables and stuff. are always like really mild okay um like not super overwhelming but they they have this vibe about them that like I feel like I almost was getting at in the Ostara episode probably um that's like this mildness that comes with springtime vibes okay and like like nice like damp earth too petrichor that's the word
00:45:33
Speaker
What is that? Petrichor? I guess it's like it's like the smell of... I guess maybe it's a little more associated with summertime, but it's the smell of the earth after rain.
00:45:44
Speaker
Oh, okay. Particularly when it's warm and you can actually smell it. Okay. that's Yeah, that's petrichor. Interesting.
00:45:56
Speaker
Yeah. um I would say... a scent that most people would associate with springtime or early summer is the smell of fresh cut grass.
00:46:07
Speaker
Right. I just, I like that again, always gets entangled with like sweaty bodies and like gasoline. Oh no.
00:46:18
Speaker
Oh my God. Thanks for ruining it for me. You're welcome. Yeah.
00:46:28
Speaker
Yeah, fresh cut grass, petrichor. you ever just go outside after like the lawn was mowed and you can smell it? Yeah, and like faint traces of gasoline.
00:46:40
Speaker
You know, because we're Americans. We use gasoline in our lawnmowers. Our tractors. oh o Yeah.
00:46:54
Speaker
No, but for real. And we're getting to that point in the year. Because it's fucking April. yeah. yeah Actually, we just had a couple major rainstorms the past couple of days and our grass is like green now.
00:47:10
Speaker
Nice. like Yeah, we're still brown over here. Pretty much everything is green right now because cause there was so much rain. And we haven't even had like that much sun, but it's still like greened up.
00:47:22
Speaker
It's kind of crazy. Yeah. We got rain all last night and this morning too and then like for the last few days it's had like the forecast has had rain on it but it's not the whole day and so like i'm just like when is the green gonna appear because it's all still brown like the grass isn't even like growing i mean like it's there but it's like dull you know yeah yeah and none of the trees have leaves yet they don't even really i think i might have seen a few that had like the red
00:47:54
Speaker
tips that you can tell are going to be you know leaf buds okay um i don't know if you know what i'm talking about but that's still like yeah no i know you're talking two away i definitely know what you're talking about with the little red like yeah yeah yeah the red tips almost look like spiky things right you almost wonder like are those left over from the fall fall up like right they're little buds yeah exactly so that actually reminds me of one of the other points that i was going to bring up oh good um

Natural Scents & Seasonal Associations

00:48:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:24
Speaker
When, you know, when you're associating like outside smells with like a certain time of the year, i don't know what it is, but like in the fall, there's, and I don't remember smelling it last year, but maybe, and maybe not even the year before, but like,
00:48:42
Speaker
There would be something that changes. Maybe it's the leaves changing in the trees or something, but there'd be like a certain smell in the air that I would get a whiff of and be like, oh yeah, fall is coming.
00:48:55
Speaker
this is You know what I mean? Yes, I know exactly what you mean. ah it is like i think it's always accompanied to by like that, like gentle, not even gentle, but like the first day that feels like not warm.
00:49:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, yeah would like it was a little more cooler than it had been in a long time. Yeah, like you you don't ever, you you that scent that you're talking about is literally always accompanied with that like drop in temperature. Yeah, I think so.
00:49:23
Speaker
Yeah, and it's the one, it's the day that you're just like, I'm so excited to put on a sweater and get a pumpkin spice latte. But then like, you know, i mock that person.
00:49:35
Speaker
At this point in the year when it's still cold and we don't want it to be anymore. For sure. But yeah, but I also totally vibe with it when it's that time.
00:49:47
Speaker
For sure. yeah Also snow. Oh yeah. Which is the iconic Lorelei Gilmore line. What? I smell snow.
00:49:59
Speaker
You know when she like opens up all the windows? Yeah. I don't remember that, but the first time it happened, i think was spoilers. Gilmore girls, spoilers, which if you haven't watched it, that's your loss.
00:50:11
Speaker
Uh, in the first, in the first season, when she starts to like be interested and go out with Rory's English teacher. Okay.
00:50:24
Speaker
And he's like left her a voicemail on her voicemail machine. And it's the middle of the night and she knows that it's going to snow. So she opens all the windows and she wraps herself in blankets and plays his voicemail on repeat. It's like the most cozy romantic thing to me.
00:50:43
Speaker
It's just like reveling in that feeling of, oh my God, somebody is so into me. And also the season is changing and it's magical. if and I'm cozy in my house, but the windows are open and it's cold.
00:50:58
Speaker
yeah yeah yeah 10 out of 10 i i will manifest that vibe for all of us may we all be laurel i gilmore agree anyway so i mean i i kind of hate how it's going to be jumping around but i kind of want to go back to perfumes or colognes okay because like um you know lot of times they geared toward um ah
00:51:32
Speaker
attracting the opposite sex right and some of them are infused with pheromones that's right right yeah that's true ah had um i had one i actually still have it but it's probably like i said smelly like it's probably smell good anymore But i remember using it um with like one person in particular that I used to date who was not like an affectionate

Pheromone Perfume & Relationship Impact

00:52:02
Speaker
person. Like he didn't just randomly try to like touch me or, you know, hug me.
00:52:08
Speaker
um I had put it on and I was like making some food at the stove and he came up behind me like to look over my shoulder to see what I was doing. But like he smelled it and he kind of went crazy.
00:52:22
Speaker
He's putting his arms around me and being like, it's like that shit actually worked, dude. yeah But it worked.
00:52:34
Speaker
So if any y'all want to get your man, Randy, there's plenty of options.

Natural Scent Power & Memory

00:52:40
Speaker
I was actually going say to sort of round the whole topic out, really do not ever discount the power of a person's natural mask.
00:52:52
Speaker
Right. Because there are strong memories and associations that I have with like past loves that smelled a particular way. And it was always a really comforting smell. And it was it was never a perfect or not perfect. It was never like a cologne thing.
00:53:12
Speaker
Right. You know, it was like because I don't really date the kinds of guys that wear colognes. ah exactly the yeah but like it's it was just their natural
00:53:29
Speaker
a new uh a new creation you know the like you know the meme of like stonks no and it's like it's like you know somebody being like i know what i'm talking about but like they don't and it's like they're talking about i don't know Um, but and there's like a graph, there's like a bar graph of like, that looks like the stock market and it just says stonks.
00:53:52
Speaker
Oh, like stocks. But it's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah. It's like, I'm a, you know, finance bro. I know what I'm talking about. so You know, like, is that thing I was like picturing like the similar meme with like a weird perfume bottle and it says cement.
00:54:13
Speaker
Oh my god, that's so funny. Oh my god. Daisy, you're gonna fall. You're gonna fall off me, dumb dog. Anyway, was gonna make a point. Hold on.
00:54:23
Speaker
Scents. The smell of a person. smell of a person. Yeah, okay. like ah Yes, the the sentence the next sentence I was gonna say before I like tripped over my own mouth was the fact that, like listen, i know it's a trope that girls are always stealing their boyfriend's hoodies but also there's a reason for that there's a reason for that yeah yeah i'm guilty of it i've it twice yep yep yep and it's funny because when we're saying we're talking about smell of a person it's like there's literally a movie called scent of a woman
00:55:09
Speaker
Is that like the B-movie remake, Smell Smell of a Person. No, Smell of a Person is the B-movie remake of Scent of a Woman. That's what I said.
00:55:21
Speaker
thought you meant it the opposite way. Yeah, I guess it would be. Smell of a Person. You know, we should probably freaking write a screenplay and just make some stupid homemade movie called Smell of a Person. I want you to write it.
00:55:43
Speaker
You write it, please. i will i will read it if you write it. oh my god. and then we can decide if we'll make a movie. Oh my god.
00:55:56
Speaker
have you ever seen scent of a woman i have not it's i have not seen a lot of movies el pacino so it's it's yeah it was actually a pretty famous movie and al pacino my husband loves this movie my god he's he's his character really annoyed me though we were like this movie came on like not too long ago and john was watching it And his character really annoyed me because he's one of those really super arrogant ex-military guys and like smug and thinks he's like better than everybody and crap. And it's just like, oh, I can't stand listening to him talk because you talk down to everybody all the time.
00:56:35
Speaker
yeah he's purposely trying to like weed out the weak people out of his like life or whatever ah but he's blind and so his whole thing was you know getting close to a woman because of the scent of a woman like like you know what i mean yeah because he couldn't see the woman anymore anyhow and that sounds like stalkerish no it's just talking about you know when you woo a woman and you know when you can get close to them and smell them because like women smell amazing most of the time sometimes not listen we are not angels are not ethereal beings in spite of our best efforts yeah exactly no for real oh I only know Al Pacino from um the Irishman oh okay
00:57:29
Speaker
Yeah, I like, I'm not really right. he's a very long acting I know, i know. i also literally just had the realization, and I don't know why i only it only just occurred to me, but like my entire childhood, for some reason, i could not keep straight Al Pacino and Al Capone.
00:57:49
Speaker
Really? Yeah. That's funny. Yeah. I mean, i get why. Yeah. Like, yeah, but also because they're also like they were always like abstract figures.
00:58:01
Speaker
Like I couldn't put we didn't watch like Al Pacino movies when I was a kid. Right. You know, i think for me, it was because I had a similar thing, actually. And even even now to this day, almost um I could conflate Al Pacino and Robert De Niro sometimes.
00:58:19
Speaker
Yeah. um They're definitely in the same category. hmm. I don't know what the category's called, but they're in it. of Mafioso character type people.
00:58:31
Speaker
God, yeah. Robert Niro's so attractive for an old man. Yeah, dude. Oh my god. Damn. Also, like and' I'm literally also thinking of like The Irishman again. Because they were in that together.
00:58:46
Speaker
oh okay. You remember that, right? i I've seen the movie. I don't remember like a crap ton about it. Yeah, Al Pacino played ah Jimmy Hoffa.
00:58:56
Speaker
Right, right. And um Robert De Niro was the Irish hitman. Okay.
00:59:03
Speaker
ah Hence the name, the Irishman. Gotcha. um But yeah, like, yeah, they were in that movie together. And that's probably why it's like my favorite movie. Hmm.
00:59:16
Speaker
Cool beans. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah. So. Sment. yeah
00:59:23
Speaker
Sment of a Molly. Oh no. That's so bad. Sment of a person. no Anyway, this has been Silly Time.
00:59:41
Speaker
Silly Time with Molly and Christina.
