In today's reading we will cover Matthew Chapters 5:29-48 and 6:1-21 and Luke Chapter 6:27-36. Today we will read about kindness vs hatred or retaliation, humility vs pride, and forgiveness vs holding a grudge. To sum it up, we will learn about loving other people, when, how, and WHY!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God is always loving, kind, compassionate, and forgiving. God makes the sun to shine on good people and sinful people. God is kind to people who are not even thankful. God is kind to people even though we are sinners. Our heavenly Father chooses to be good, kind, loving, gracious, compassionate, forgiving. We, also, need to CHOOSE to be the same way toward people, even those who are mean to us, steal from us, hurt us. Jesus told us that when we love those difficult-to-love people that God will give us good things for doing so and we will be called children of God.

00:00:03

00:00:41
Speaker
We have some fantastic reading today. Thank you so much for tuning in for another daily Bible reading.

Jesus' Teachings on Kindness and Humility

00:00:49
Speaker
We are going to be listening to the Lord's Prayer today.
00:00:54
Speaker
And we are going to be hearing a lot of teaching from Jesus on kindness versus retaliation and humility versus pride.
00:01:07
Speaker
What's important to note is that Jesus is teaching us how to behave the way God behaves. This isn't just the right way to behave or things that he wants us to do.
00:01:21
Speaker
Jesus is telling us how to do things the way God does things. And God is perfect. His love is perfect.
00:01:34
Speaker
He is not spiteful. He is not revengeful. He doesn't retaliate. He is loving and kind and forgiving and gracious.
00:01:48
Speaker
Not just most of the time, but all the time. And man, that is a tall order to fill. But you know what? God chooses to be that way.
00:02:01
Speaker
God makes the choice to be the way he is. There is nobody else besides God who is like God. He is the only one. he could do anything with his omniscient power.
00:02:16
Speaker
He can do anything. There is nothing that is too hard for him to do. And instead of choosing to do bad things or to be mean and or angry or hurtful, God chooses to be loving.
00:02:31
Speaker
kind, gracious, forgiving, thoughtful, generous. And if our all-powerful God, who has every reason to be angry or to be able to have the right to be hurtful, chooses not to be, how much more so should we choose not to be?
00:02:59
Speaker
It can be really hard. People are mean to us. And Jesus explains, God, people treat God the same way. And yet God does not choose to be hurtful.
00:03:13
Speaker
He doesn't retaliate. So that's why Jesus is teaching us how to do these things.

Emulating God’s Loving Behavior

00:03:22
Speaker
So let's go ahead and get into our reading today.
00:03:26
Speaker
We have a lot to read.
00:03:31
Speaker
Today our first section is entitled, An Eye for an Eye. Is your eye making you sin? asked Jesus. Then it would be better not to have an eye.
00:03:43
Speaker
Is your hand making you sin? Then it would be better not to have a hand. You don't want to sin and be sent to hell someday. You've heard about someone who leaves his wife, said Jesus.
00:03:57
Speaker
He is supposed to give her a divorce paper. I say anybody who leaves his wife and marries another woman is sinning. He is sinning unless she left him first.
00:04:12
Speaker
Anybody who marries a divorced woman is sinning. You have heard that you are to keep the promises that you made to God, said Jesus.
00:04:23
Speaker
But I tell you just to say yes and mean yes. When you say no, mean no. Anything more than that comes from Satan. Don't make promises in heaven's name.
00:04:37
Speaker
That is where God sits to rule. Don't promise by the earth's name. It is the stool for God's feet. and Don't promise by Jerusalem's name, said Jesus.
00:04:50
Speaker
It's a great king's city. And don't promise by pointing to your own head. You can't even make your own hair white or black.
00:05:01
Speaker
You've heard that if somebody hurts you, then you can hurt that person. But I tell you not to fight a sinful person, said Jesus.
00:05:13
Speaker
What if somebody hits you on your right cheek? Then turn your left cheek to that person too. What if somebody takes your coat? Give that person your shirt too.
00:05:27
Speaker
What if somebody makes you walk a mile with him? Go two miles instead.
00:05:34
Speaker
Give to people who ask you for something, said Jesus. Don't say no to people who want to borrow something. Treat other people the way you want to be treated.
00:05:46
Speaker
You've heard that you're to love your neighbor and hate your enemy, said Jesus. I say, love your enemies. Pray for people who hurt you. Then you will be children of your Father in heaven.
00:06:01
Speaker
Your father makes the sun shine on all people, bad and good. He sends rain for people who do right and for people who do wrong. What if you love just the people who love you?
00:06:15
Speaker
What good does that do? Asked Jesus. Even sinners love people who love them. What if you're friendly just to people who you like? How is that different from what other people do?
00:06:29
Speaker
Even people who don't believe in God do that. Let's say you lend money to some people, said Jesus, and you do it because you know they'll pay you back. What good does that do?
00:06:42
Speaker
Even people who don't believe in God do that.

Guidance on Prayer and Forgiveness

00:06:45
Speaker
They lend money when they know they're going to be paid back.
00:06:50
Speaker
Love your enemies, said Jesus. Do good to them. Lend to them. Don't look for anything back. Then God will plan good things for you.
00:07:04
Speaker
You will be his children. God is kind to people who are not even thankful. He is kind to sinful people. So be kind like your father.
00:07:20
Speaker
Don't do things that are good just so people will see you. If you do, God your Father won't do good things for you, said Jesus. Don't show off when you give.
00:07:32
Speaker
Some people give so that other people will say good things about them. But the truth is, that's all the good that will come to them.
00:07:43
Speaker
Give to the poor, said Jesus. And don't tell your left hand what your right hand does. That way it will be a secret. Your father sees things that are done in secret, so he will do good things for you.
00:08:00
Speaker
What about praying? said Jesus. Don't pray just so others will see you. Some people do that, and the truth is, being seen is all the good that will come to them.
00:08:15
Speaker
Go to your room when you pray, said Jesus, and close the door, and then pray to the father you cannot see. Your father sees everything you do in secret.
00:08:28
Speaker
He will do good things for you.
00:08:31
Speaker
And don't just chatter away when you pray, said Jesus. People who don't believe in the true God do that. They think that their God hears them if they use lots of words.
00:08:42
Speaker
Don't be like them. Your father knows what you need even before you ask.
00:08:49
Speaker
This is how you should pray, said Jesus. Our Father in heaven, your name is wonderful. Bring your kingdom here to earth.
00:09:03
Speaker
We pray that what you want will be done on earth like it is in heaven. Give us the food we need each day forgive us for our sin.
00:09:16
Speaker
and forgive us as we forgive people who sin against us.

Heavenly Versus Earthly Treasures

00:09:21
Speaker
Don't let any anyone try to make us do wrong. Save us from Satan, the enemy.
00:09:29
Speaker
Forgive other people when they treat you badly, said Jesus. Then God, your father, will forgive you. What if you don't forgive other people?
00:09:43
Speaker
Then your father won't forgive you. You can choose to go without food to worship God, said Jesus. But don't frown about it. Some people make faces and they're showing everyone that they are going without food.
00:09:58
Speaker
The truth is that that's all the good that will come to them.
00:10:04
Speaker
When you go without food, put sweet smelling oil in your hair. Wash your face, said Jesus, and then other people won't notice that you are going without food.
00:10:16
Speaker
But God will notice that He sees what you do in secret and he will do good things for you.
00:10:26
Speaker
Don't store up riches for yourself here on earth. Moths and rust tear down things on earth, said Jesus. Robbers break in.
00:10:37
Speaker
They steal riches. Store up your riches in heaven, said Jesus. Moths and rust can't tear things apart in heaven. Robbers can't break in and steal things in heaven.
00:10:50
Speaker
Your heart will care about the place where you keep your riches.

Applying the Teachings in Daily Life

00:10:58
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:11:05
Speaker
Wow, we learned a lot today. It was, i had to read it over and over again to see what God wanted for our daily application.
00:11:17
Speaker
Today we read about kindness versus retaliation. We read about humility versus pride. And we read about forgiveness versus not forgiving.
00:11:31
Speaker
Our God is an awesome God. And we are needing to behave the way he wants us to behave, the way he behaves. He gives us the example.
00:11:41
Speaker
God doesn't expect us to do things that he doesn't do himself.
00:11:48
Speaker
God knows we are not perfect though. And he gives us so much grace and forgiveness, doesn't he? So today it can be summed up in that we are to love one another.

Personal Reflections and Struggles

00:12:01
Speaker
Even those people who are not treating us nicely, I have a hard time with that. I don't know about you. I have a my daughter treats me very badly and a have a very difficult time with her.
00:12:16
Speaker
And sometimes I'm just so angry and i feel like being mean in response. And then we had this reading today. And I think that that's why I was having such a difficult time with that today is because God always manages to bring me what we are reading about for our daily application so that he can give me a place to practice what we read.
00:12:39
Speaker
So we've talked about that a little bit. It's like, dang it, I have to practice what we're learning about is our daily application. So let's look at some of these verses again.
00:12:54
Speaker
When somebody hurts us, Jesus said not to fight a sinful person. If somebody hits you, don't hit them back.
00:13:06
Speaker
If somebody takes something from you,
00:13:11
Speaker
Don't ask for it back.
00:13:14
Speaker
I actually like what our big Bible says about that. I was looking at that tonight and it really hit home for me when I read it in the big Bible.
00:13:26
Speaker
Jesus told us
00:13:33
Speaker
in Luke chapter six,
00:13:37
Speaker
Starting in verse 27, Jesus says, But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for the ones who mistreat you.
00:13:54
Speaker
To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also. And from the one who takes your cloak, do not hold back your shirt. Give to everyone who asks you,
00:14:06
Speaker
And this is the part that really struck home for me. And whoever takes something of yours, make no demands upon him.
00:14:18
Speaker
So for my personal application, i get very upset when I feel like my daughter is just taking and taking and taking, and she's an adult and she's just taking, she's using way too much of anything. It's like, it's just way too much.
00:14:35
Speaker
ah it's it's It's beyond reason. And i get very angry with her because she just seems to be using the more I buy extra of, the more she just thinks that it's, she can just use more. Oh, good. I had, now I have more to use.
00:14:51
Speaker
And I've been, I've been praying about this all day today. And so when I got home from work, I was reading in our big Bible the way I usually do before i ah ah do our daily recording.
00:15:08
Speaker
And in that verse 30 says, give to everyone who asks you and whoever takes something of yours, make no demands upon him.
00:15:19
Speaker
So and the more God gives us, the more we want. we we We do the same thing with God. It's like we can never have enough.
00:15:30
Speaker
We ask God for things and we ask God for things and we want more and more. And it might not be material things. It can just be, you know, we we constantly are praying and asking him for things.
00:15:41
Speaker
Help me to do this. Help me to do that. ah Grant me this. it If this is your will, let me have that. And we are petitioning God for things all the time.
00:15:54
Speaker
And we are supposed to come to him when we when we want something. And he tells us yes or no. But God gives us so much. And we read today that when we do good for others, when we love others, God will do good things for us.
00:16:13
Speaker
We cannot out-love God. And we cannot out-give God. We've talked about that when we talked about tithing. God says and that's one that's like the only thing we could test him on that he says, I will make your storehouses full and overflowing when you bring your your tithe in.
00:16:36
Speaker
And I really just felt like God was speaking about that today. And so I looked through and I numbered how many times ah Jesus spoke about being kind versus not being kind to people.
00:16:52
Speaker
And he gave all of these different scenarios, these different situations. And later on, Jesus will tell us that his command for us is to love one another.
00:17:04
Speaker
And there's even a song that we have made that says ah they will know we are Christians by our love. So we are meant to love. God is love.
00:17:14
Speaker
And it can be so hard. But Jesus tells us here, we pretty much don't have an excuse. Jesus tells us, love your enemies, do good to them. Don't look for anything back.
00:17:27
Speaker
God will plan good things for you. then you will be his children. God is kind to people who are not even thankful. i don't feel like my daughter is thankful in any way, shape or form.
00:17:42
Speaker
But God is kind to people who are not even thankful. He is kind to sinful people. And he's so be kind like your father.
00:17:55
Speaker
that's a tough daily application, isn't it? But that is our daily application today. And I'm sticking to it.
00:18:06
Speaker
So I've been praying for God to help me to be kind like he is, to be compassionate like he is, to be able to um pray for her, even when I'm not feeling very prayerful.
00:18:18
Speaker
And i've I've experienced this throughout the year. You may remember if you've been here for a while that I had difficulties with certain people at work and had
00:18:30
Speaker
prayed for them rather than to be angry and to have difficulties. And I just really feel like God has done wonderful things for me at work as a result of that.
00:18:42
Speaker
And it's it definitely helps me to be more like Jesus. And that's our goal. Our goal is to be disciples of Jesus, to learn to be like him.
00:18:55
Speaker
And we will read, I think it's tomorrow, that no student is below his teacher um is ah is above his teacher. But the student will learn to be like the teacher.
00:19:07
Speaker
And so we are meant to learn to be like Jesus.

Encouragement to Live by God’s Word

00:19:12
Speaker
And Jesus is the Prince of Peace. In him, no violence is found. And I tell you, sometimes I feel so angry. I'm like, well, I'm feeling a little violent today.
00:19:26
Speaker
oh man. So it's it's definitely something that we are not perfect at, but that's our goal for our daily application today.
00:19:38
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today with all of the reading that we did. And if you do, please click that light button, the one that looks like a thumbs up or a heart or that share button.
00:19:52
Speaker
Share it over, share it this way, share it that way.
00:19:57
Speaker
And we want to encourage other people to read God's word. I am so passionate about spreading the word about reading God's word. God's word is so powerful, so useful for teaching and correction, reconciliation, to enable us to make us capable of doing the good work that God has set for us to do.
00:20:21
Speaker
And it just has every good purpose. So but today's lesson was proof in the pudding for that, right? So thank you for joining me today, whether you are following along on your podcast or watching on video.
00:20:35
Speaker
And I hope that you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening this August 24th daily reading. And you know where I'll be tomorrow. You can find me right here.
00:20:47
Speaker
