Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Today I'm your host today, Dan Tanner, and I'm joined yet again with basically history repeating itself on Friday with Walle Bakkari. How are you doing Big Man?
00:00:27
Wale Bakare
How are you doing,

Game Preview and Crystal Palace Review

00:00:28
Wale Bakare
Dan? to be on the pod tonight. yeah just Just as you said, you know we did the um um preview of the game on Friday. and I'm actually really glad to do a review of this one because this is probably the first time I'm going to go. What a perfect performance by Palace.
00:00:47
officialgspn
Oh, it was great performance because I was reading the social media back and forth doing all the reactions to it. And it's like, when that goal goes in, it's just up. Yes, come on. We're having an absolutely great game. But as you alluded to, we're going to have a brief review of the game, which was a win for Palace if you didn't know.

Transfer Update: Roman Eze Joins Palace

00:01:09
officialgspn
And we're also going to talk about the man of the match performance from Mateta.
00:01:16
officialgspn
So it's always good to talk about. I know Joe is definitely going to be paying attention to that one with baited breath and he will be, yeah we don't get it right. he We'll have some words with him, won't we? And then finally, before that West Ham game, we finally, finally got a transfer in and it was the transfer of Roman Eze from Millwall which I think, but yet again, me and Wale probably brought up a week or so ago that this was a fairly substantial transfer rumor and we were kind of somewhat positive about him coming to Palace so we can now talk about him as a Palace player. So let's get right into talking about the West Ham game.

Crystal Palace vs West Ham: A Tactical Analysis

00:02:02
officialgspn
What an
00:02:03
officialgspn
what it was a great result don't get me wrong it's uh especially got rid of some of those demons from the beginning of the first few games of the season where we were playing really badly and we've managed to sort of squeak out a draw with them i think uh it may even be the last i can't remember now it was so long ago but it started off pretty tame nothing really happening pretty snooze fest really but that was most of the premiership on the uh Saturday, half time, nil, nil, across the board, nothing was happening. And then, I don't know what it was, but either Glazner lit a fire under them, but then they started really sort of taking it to We get a Mateta goal from essentially an Eze pass that just goes straight through the entire defense.
00:02:59
officialgspn
and Mateta with a bit of power on the edge of the box just slots in the back of the net and then after another I think about the 80th minute we get a penalty shout from Inketia being fouled by Fabianski and then Mateta slots that one away just about Fabianski nearly saves it But we walk away with the three points against a fairly, essentially, lackluster West Ham.
00:03:30
officialgspn
Walei, what's your view of the game from the weekend?
00:03:34
Wale Bakare
it was It was a complete performance. it was yeah the The first off was a bit you know snoozy. to just That's just the word is you as you put it. But if there was a team of the two that was looking like they wanted the result or they were going to get a result, it was always Palace.
00:03:55
Wale Bakare
I have to mention by the way that Western went the entirety of that game without having a shot on target. There's not many teams that will go to London Stadium, you know, and stop Western from getting a shot on target. Paquetta, Kudus, you know, Carlos Soler and, you know, some some other player attacking players that they've got. to it's it's It's quite interesting that, you know, Palace dominated the game or were on the front foot, so to speak, almost the entirety of the game. And, you know, fantastic performances all around from, you know, Palace players. and Is it a bit weird that I was open, you know, the Western would get, you know, a late consolation goal just because I wanted to be right on my call for a 2-1 win for Palace?
00:04:44
Wale Bakare
But but not performing the e but that that performance from Palace deserved the clinch hit.
00:04:49
officialgspn
Paul wanted to be right while I, yeah, you wanted to get the... Bring that up that you were probably the closest in our predictions
00:05:02
Wale Bakare
That performance deserved all the three points and I'm particularly happy for the boys because they've been getting closer and closer to this sort of performance.

Crystal Palace's Form and Strategy

00:05:11
Wale Bakare
We've spoken a lot of times about how Even when Palace have won a couple of games that they've won this season, there's been, you know, edgy wins. There's been quite, there's been wins that have been difficult to churn out. There's been grinding to a win.
00:05:31
Wale Bakare
The first one against Westham was quite convincing. Palace were the better side. Great for his goal by a Mateta. It just shows that he's got that in his locker as well. He can go one on one.
00:05:45
Wale Bakare
or one on two as as he was and you know, pick out a fantastic finish and and and it's it's just really great for his confidence as well, know, getting that goal and then, you know, the penalty you was a bit lucky but yeah Sometimes you need a bit of luck, especially when you've worked so hard in a game. So Palace were deservedly lucky in that game and got the goal and it was three points. think it's unbeaten in seven away games in the league, which by the way is the very first time that's happening in Palace top flight history. So it goes to tell you there is you know something intentional. I mean, there's an intentional effort. but
00:06:28
Wale Bakare
Towards you know, you know keeping the form and and you you see you see the body language of glass now you see the body language of the boys They've had the they're so tired of you know The the kind of start that you know Palisade it took until late October before the first win of the league season but you know the the wings of the The performances have been improving and it was only a matter of time before we got a result or a performance like you know we saw against Western. And I'm just really, really pleased for the boys.
00:07:00
officialgspn
Yeah, and I couldn't agree with you more, but i think yeah I think it was seven undefeated, but I think one of those is also the FA Cup game, so you might want to put a slight thing on it. based Basically, we haven't lost since we got mulled by Arsenal and just before Christmas, which is pretty good going for us. We're normally very much sort of here and there, sort of up and down when it comes to form, win one match and then lose the next five or something is usually our ah ah usually our form book but we're actually starting to look little bit more deadly we're starting to play like what we should really be looking at and being in the certain positions sort of moving up the table to where we were somewhat expected and most people would say that they would probably put in if they had at the beginning of the season so it's all looking good so but yours got slightly
00:07:57
officialgspn
feel sorry for West Ham. They played absolutely, awfully. I think the only shot that they really had was Wan Basakas that kind of skewed completely, missing the entire goal, almost hitting the corner flag of how bad that half volley was. And you're like, you feel sorry from some times. It's like they really didn't have anything in their locker. They couldn't handle Palace in any way, shape or form. And then they got a and also It also didn't help that they got a red card back into about the 80 something minute, two yellows. So they just had though probably the worst day that they could probably have. And yeah it's not just not the greatest performance either, especially when you've got a new gaffer to try and impress with Grand Potter.
00:08:47
officialgspn
So, but we're not going to share too many tears about that because they are West Ham and we are Palace. So this is a Palace podcast.

Acknowledgements and Mateta's Second Half Performance

00:08:55
officialgspn
We're going to talk about Palace. But we'll take a quick break to thank our provider here at Zencaster. And then when we come back, we're going to talk about Mateta, the destroyer of corner flags. So we'll be right back.
00:09:23
officialgspn
finally
00:09:29
officialgspn
It's probably efficiently.
00:09:39
officialgspn
And we're back. You're listening to the Daily Palace podcast podcast. Sorry, my mouth decided to go weird there. The Daily Palace podcast, trying to do it properly, brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. And I'm still i'm your host, Daniel Tanner, and we are still joined by Wale Bakari. So we are now going to talk about the man of the match,
00:10:04
officialgspn
the mighty Mateta, the destroyer of golf of corner flags. Absolutely top draw performance, especially in that second half. Just sort of his first goal, the but the goal was pretty So it was just pretty really. He latched onto a great through ball from Eze that was sat kind of somewhere around about the center circle and just essentially muscled his way through two defenders and then a hard shot, kind of hard play shot just outside the D to beat Fabianski. And then with about two minutes remaining and and in the game, and Nick
00:10:52
officialgspn
and Kettio was brought down by Fabianski again to get a penalty so penalty kick, which then Meteta strode up nice and cut nice and confident and slotted that one away. Wasn't maybe the cleanest goal when it came to that. Fabianski nearly scored but it kind of went underneath his body and kind of squeezed through. But that also being said, his first half wasn't brilliant. I think it was like,
00:11:21
officialgspn
one maybe two shots one was kind of wide and kind of sliced up ah ah sliced a bit but either way it gets a nice sort of it gets a b brace and keeps going sort of and basically keeps dragging us up with him so Wale what are sort of any other thoughts on Mateta's performance and also have our kind of how expectations changed with his current form because i know he's sort of we weren't overly like we were kind of critical of him the first few weeks we were very praising him when he was going really well for the french team and the olympics but that didn't really translate immediately into the league so any kind of thoughts on that
00:12:10
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, it looks like it's getting into get me into some groove. it's not exactly at the level that we know he can get to, but it looks like he's getting some momentum. I should say, by the way, that he got 16 goals in the Premier League last season in 35 games. He's got eight goals in 22 at the moment. That's exactly half of what he got last season.
00:12:38
Wale Bakare
But were you also put into consideration that about 10 of his 16 last season came in the second half of the season? In fact, a lot of goals came towards the end of the season. So maybe, just maybe, we would want to you know look at that and hope that he's beginning to eat fun again. If that's the case, then that can only you know spell good omen for Crystal Palace because we know you know, ah what is, you know, the turnover of ah form form for him last season d for the team, you know, he got a lot of other players firing on, you know, a different to Linda entirely, and, you know, just kept taking the team, you know, all the way off the table. So maybe just maybe.
00:13:21
Wale Bakare
that That is what we'll we're witnessing you know at the moment because the the goals are coming back for him. It's not just the goals. is that It's the body language. It's the smile with which he plays the game. It's the happiness with which he plays the game, which is something that we're beginning to see you know with other players. Daniel Munoz is now, you know, given like the solid performances that we know of him week in week out, Tarek Mitchell is improving, the Parity Azer is looking like he's getting back, you know, the form that we know of him is Smiler size, having a great time, although it was a fitness doubt, you know, for the game and, you know, could only complete 66 minutes against Western. So,
00:14:00
Wale Bakare
Mateta, yes, will be important for Palace. He remains the best option in front of goal for Palace. I think Katia hasn't, you know, gotten to the heights that, you know, we would love to get to. ah When he was at Arsenal, I've seen him at Palace missing chances or not taking chances that it would normally bury when it was at Arsenal where it was getting just a few opportunities but every time it got a chance you could see its quality you could see that given more game time it can get the goals as I've said
00:14:38
Wale Bakare
in time pass with him at the moment. It's not a question of his quality. It's obviously a question of confidence. You will ah ah you know learn a great deal. It will help him a great deal if the team's confidence continues to grow generally. It would be nice for him to come into coming into games where there's lesser pressure.
00:14:58
Wale Bakare
where the team is ahead, the team is you know is ah is is performing good or better than the opposition team. So when it comes into such games, you can see that you know it plays with less pressure. And you know we saw that when he won the penalty you know being fouled by Lucas Fabianski. I should point out though, again, that I did call that Fabianski was going to be a very important player for Western, and he was indeed important.
00:15:27
Wale Bakare
you off violent
00:15:29
officialgspn
All right, I'll give you that one. I know that was definitely one of the words. We'll give you that. We'll put that one in the ah in yeah the the the right column.
00:15:35
Wale Bakare
Give it it give you that far away.
00:15:36
officialgspn
for walla
00:15:37
Wale Bakare
you know well But specifically speaking about Mateta, I really hope that he's coming into some groove and he's You know, it will maybe, ah ah you know, go into the second half of the season, bang it in goals like he did last season. And that that can only mean one direction on the table for Palace.
00:15:59
officialgspn
Yeah, I'm very impressed by his form because yeah you were saying like last last season he only got 16 out of 70, but I think because a like last season there I think he was very much a second string.
00:16:12
officialgspn
center forward he wasn't considered the starter we were kind of still trying to work edard and um and um i think probably back end of sort of ben teke etc i can't remember them maybe even ayu as well were probably the first choice center forwards last year but he's to he's doing insanely well for compared to sort of what he started at at at palace My only concern is but what happens when the form dips a bit because not every player can keep at that level for forever.
00:16:45
Wale Bakare
Well it's fun, it's fun deep down the start of the season where opening goes up.
00:16:48
officialgspn
weve
00:16:50
officialgspn
yeah we You can only go up but it's all the thing of like even even the world class set a forward struggle from time to time. We even have Halland struggling through a little bit of Christmas so If he starts to do drip to drop in form, how is that going to affect the rest of the team? And heaven forbid, if there's any kind of long injury, as he has had one or two in in his career, we don't really have the depth to kind of change into

Mateta and the French National Team?

00:17:22
officialgspn
that. And Ketia is still kind of finding his groove at Palace. Saar is still a guy that's still performing really well.
00:17:32
officialgspn
But he's ah ah yet another one that will run very hot and cold. If he go he can get keep going, then we should be fine. But it's that slight niggle in the back of my mind that if he's like deformed dips or anything like that, will is there going to be anybody else in the squad that's going to try and either fill the role or try and be the sort the motivator going forward?
00:17:57
officialgspn
Also, I think if you can try and keep up this form, because there is an international break coming up in the next six weeks or so, I know that French striker position is pretty, yeah pretty heatily contested anyway, sort of the likes of Turan and a certain Killian Mbappe at that certain point. But there's probably, if he keeps up this good form, there is no reason why he shouldn't be at least given a shot i at the the full national full national team instead of just a ah Olympic, essentially a gi Olympic silver medal, I think is what we got out of it, which is still pretty good.
00:18:39
officialgspn
a I don't think there's anything else that we want to talk about, Mateta really, sir.
00:18:42
Wale Bakare
Well, i i was I was just going to i was just going to to add about, you know, Edin Katia, whether, you know, a run of games would would help him and, you know, get him more settled and maybe improve things for him.
00:18:45
officialgspn
Not really.
00:18:49
officialgspn
All right.
00:19:00
Wale Bakare
Remember, at the start of the season, Ismael Essar was in and out of the team. Then, you know, came a run of games for him and then he's improved tremendously. And I just wonder, you know, it's just with Nketiya, you wouldn't need to, you wouldn't need that lucky break, you know, a game where it comes on and not just doing the running, but, you know, it gets a goal, gets an assist. And, you know, it would need to, you know, channel a performance like that for, you know, maybe consecutive games, and then Glassner would then look at maybe to give him a chance at, you know, leading the line ahead of Mateta. But it's good that you know you have such competition in the squad. It's good that you know that there are options available on the bench. But I just wonder whether a run of games will catch some good. But it's this difficult at the moment for him to to use up Mateta as the number one, you know number nine at Palace.
00:20:08
officialgspn
Yeah, well, I think, yeah, most players would love sort of a long run in the team to get their form up. But when you, like, in catch here at the moment, he's just not doing what basically we were expecting him to do. He's got, I think, two goals in the League Cup, which one against Arsenal, and I think it was QPR. But in the league, he's just been sort of just there. He hasn't really done what, because we were expecting him to be sort of this, a tiny forward, like being sort of intricate play inside the box and maybe getting a few goals and a few assists, but I don't think he's even done that. So if he, if he can start to sort of just essentially have fun with the game first, I think we'll probably be a beneficial as well as getting a decent run, probably a 40, 50 minute runs in the squad at at a time would be probably beneficial as well. But I'm not the gaffer.
00:21:05
officialgspn
So if I was a gaffer, I probably would have given him at least 15, 20 minutes a game just to get him some time, but whatever. On that, I think we will take another quick break to thank the network that allows us to talk nonsense about Palace for half an hour or so.

Roman Eze's Transfer and Impact

00:21:22
officialgspn
And then we'll get back. We will then discuss the transfer that Palace have finally completed. It's only the back end of January. It's only the 20th of January, so We've had three weeks to do this. So well, we'll be back in a couple of moments.
00:22:08
officialgspn
And we are back with the Daily Palace podcast. I'm still your host for this last little bit, Dantana. And we are still, yet again, we're still here with Wale Bakari. So Palace finally made a transfer in this January transfer window. And I think it's one that myself and Wale probably bought up at least a week or so ago. I think when we were talking about transfer rumors and et cetera was it's the transfer of Roman Eze from Millwall. I believe he has a five and a half year deal. um and just of it's really the thing of finally Palace have made a transfer and it isn't going out for a change. Just a quote from Steve Parrish about him.
00:23:00
officialgspn
A quote, Roman is the type of player who who gets crowds off their feet, the type of player long associated with the south lung with South London and Crystal Palace for a bull card. Very much the kind of guy we go after, tricky winger, is going to just be essentially a nuisance. Very much, I think, being largely compared with a lacy,
00:23:29
officialgspn
So we could have essentially SA and SA, which is going to get really complicated for the commentators now. I really, really envy them. Oh, two guys that have exactly the same name or very, very similar.
00:23:42
officialgspn
yeah um So while i how do you think this is this signing is going to work out?
00:23:50
Wale Bakare
Well, and I just quickly, you know, went to check whether he's got any Nigerian link there, just as Barry Giese. I was thinking so it's probably not going to be too difficult for me to call the names, but I have to say, just as, you know, Steve Perry said, yeah, its' it's that type of player. You you get excited every time he gets on the ball. He can take a man on, can beat a man.
00:24:16
Wale Bakare
end product remains questionable but then he's 19 there's been players like him many years ago at that age not many of them go on to you know um um you know light of the world they they show that they they show they've got the pace they've got the trickery they they can beat someone in the premier league that I could you know mention a couple of names. Uh, oil it Junior oil it was one with qpr. Um Um Ryan stellan was one who went on to do great things in his career Uh, jordan ebay at liverpool was another player as well, you know So there's been quite a number of players like that ryan sesame on is another so
00:25:03
Wale Bakare
you You can only hope that it will come good. But if there is one thing you can, we know about policies over the the years, and the recruitment team have shown that they are able to support a talent in the championship, bring them to the Premier League, and they will deliver. You know, Eze, Elisa, Wharton, who unfortunately is sidelined at the moment. You know, and a couple of other names. so we We can only hope that it will come good, but on the surface, it looks, you know, a good sign in. It looks one that, you know, is able to to to create chances and, you know, get Palace fans excited. But as I said, with players of that nature, at that age, as the
00:25:51
Wale Bakare
It's the end product that that that is something that that is lacking and I'm sure that is something that Glassman will be working with him on. this go I think it's got five goals already this season and about 21 games are played for me as well. So it's one that that also kind can get some end product but it will of course need to improve because the Premier League is ah ah is a different level entirely.
00:26:12
Wale Bakare
But but it's it's one I'm all full about and I just really hope that you know it creates ah it gives that depth of the bench to Palace. It's one that can create chances when the game is you know into the final quarter and the opposition defenders are a bit wary and tired and you can either go at them and create chances. that that but That would be nice and I just really hope that ah you know, it leaves up to the billing and becomes good for Palace.
00:26:45
officialgspn
Yeah, I would probably very much put him as an impact sub at least for a game or two. We might probably start him against Brentford, get the home crowd behind him, get the hype, get him used to sort of a the premiership style. I wouldn't be doing it against Man United in the next couple of days. It's definitely a give him about two or three weeks to sort of acclimatize to the premiership.
00:27:10
officialgspn
So just a slightly different sort of animal compared to the championship.
00:27:14
Wale Bakare
I don't know about <unk> by against Manchester United, because, you know, Palace are above them on the table anyway, so...
00:27:16
officialgspn
But also that being said...
00:27:23
Wale Bakare
People say to me, let's aside.
00:27:24
officialgspn
At the moment, but it's still Man United, so... yeah Oh, it's just been me now, aren't you? Let's kick them while they're down.
00:27:35
Wale Bakare
They've been down for a while. people
00:27:40
officialgspn
Right. Also, that being said, rules I'm going to slightly talk about the slightly cheeky pricing of Chalabar by Chelsea to make sure they can't set the nobody's going to buy

Chalabar's Future at Chelsea?

00:27:53
officialgspn
them until the summer.
00:27:53
officialgspn
it's a It's a bit cheeky of them, isn't it, Walle?
00:27:55
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, it is. You know, we we spoke about this on Friday and at the surprise that, you know, Chelsea have indeed asked him to come back. So I saw a picture of him in training. I think on Friday was a picture of him with Connie Chukwemeka and i think Kevin and conquered and it was all smiles and I'm thinking you're supposed to be sad you know but then he was all smiles I really hope that you know he gets the chance he will most likely get playing time because this is a talented footballer he will most likely get a chance now because there's injuries but I i just don't know maybe it's it's about maybe it's the money because but then Chelsea had the parent club they they have the right but
00:28:41
Wale Bakare
he's He's been put on transfer lease about three times by Chelsea. They wanted to get rid of him for, was it 25 million a couple of times? In fact, Palace wanted him at some point, but then he refused to join. And then he fought his way back into the team, which is, ah you know, something that's laudable, by the way, on the Mauricio Pochettino. And then, you know, he was put back on the transfer lease and then he joined Palace on loan and it was you know, putting in some great performances of his own, building the name of his own, but the state's been cut short by Chelsea. I just wonder, and I think you put it, you put it correctly, because I was asking, you know, off the mic and I was saying, so if Palace goes back to Chelsea, go back to Chelsea and say, here's 40 million, we want him back. Would they, but I don't think Palace would, anyone, you know, is buying him for 40 million at the moment anyway, because it's injury prone.
00:30:04
Wale Bakare
um,
00:30:05
Wale Bakare
You know, just the other guys that are injured, what happens when they come back. But, you know, you you would understand the appeal. Chelsea Football Club are big in London. but Crystal Palace are big in London as well. But you you don't understand the appeal.
00:30:18
Wale Bakare
It's got friends at Chelsea, Guisey, you know, spent years with some of them he came up with, you know, so you you would understand the appeal. But all the best to them.
00:30:29
Wale Bakare
I'm like that now. I'm like that now. Before I'm like that, all the best to them.
00:30:32
