Introduction and Podcast Overview

00:00:05
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I am one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside my wonderful friend, Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:18
Speaker
Just wonderful, Al. Fantastic. We were just talking off air that we look forward to this every week, that whatever work and life is throwing at us, we both always look forward to yeah.
00:00:34
Speaker
we are going to be review one that we both be looking forward to especially which will be season one episode twelve i believe the one with the dozen laagne but before we get stuck into the episode yeah i've got some exciting news was exciting to us and our few listeners I'm so excited to hear. Yeah, so we we record a couple of episodes in advance. I think we have nine episodes after that.
00:01:00
Speaker
We always try and record a week or two ahead just in case we're busy, you know, life happens, so we can commit to sending an episode out every Thursday. So I think we're recording episode 12, but there's only nine released.
00:01:14
Speaker
But I thought I'd dig into analytics and things a little bit and...

Milestone Achievements and Listener Shoutouts

00:01:19
Speaker
are
00:01:24
Speaker
We have some news to share. And first of all, I'm very excited that that worked. um So we have now hit over 500 downloads and of the podcast, which we're very excited about.
00:01:35
Speaker
Wow. We're not overly concerned about the numbers or we don't really have targets or anything. But it's just nice to know that the podcast is being enjoyed by more than ourselves, a couple of co-workers and our spouses.
00:01:47
Speaker
It's nice to know that it's kind of got a bit of a further reach. So we've hit 500 downloads on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. I should say we're recording on a Sunday morning. like And then we passed 600 yesterday.
00:02:00
Speaker
So we're we're climbing, it's growing, it's moving. And again, it's not the reason we do this, of course, by any stretch, but it's just nice to feel that people um are listening.
00:02:12
Speaker
And on that note, we have several pieces of good news, as I said. We have listeners as we've since the beginning in the UK, the USA. Spain, Germany, Poland, a couple of places like that.
00:02:25
Speaker
and But we have added Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and so Poland, and even Slovakia to the list this week. So we are truly the Purple ah purple International Door podcast, which is just fun.
00:02:40
Speaker
There might be one listener in those places. Maybe there's a couple. The analytics seem to vary. um Doesn't really matter. It's just fun that it's going to a couple of different places. That's neat.
00:02:52
Speaker
speaking of listeners i have to give ah ah shoutout if you will on this episode episode twelve but i got a lovely message from my big sister setally i have two older sisters but my sister sally is completely caught up i think she's on the last episode that we've released and she was telling me via a whatsapp message that she's a really enjoying the podcast.
00:03:14
Speaker
But she says it's like having a conversation with her little brother as she walks the dog. um She's back in Scotland, of course. I thought, what a lovely message that was. So special shout out to good old Sally, my big sister.
00:03:28
Speaker
um So wanted it to give her that. um Some other

Community Engagement and Live Event Announcement

00:03:32
Speaker
news. We have launched a Facebook group this week where we're going to try and post, you know this is the episode we're recording. What are your thoughts?
00:03:40
Speaker
What your thoughts on this character, that character? ah Deanne had a conversation. there A couple of people joined in, and I'm looking forward to hearing what they said. um But, yeah, search for the Purple Door podcast podcast.
00:03:54
Speaker
Group. I think that's what we called it. I forgot. Group X. Find that. Or if you're on Instagram, you can click on a bio. There's a link in there. You'll find us.
00:04:05
Speaker
But we're looking to grow that group and just grow our a little community. um And speaking of community, open the Purple Podcast Door, wait, the Purple Door Podcast Club.
00:04:17
Speaker
Club, that's it. that We're a club, guys. We're a club. You can join our club. ah And if you join the club, send us your address. I'll put a sticker in the post for you. i made some more. i had some more Purple Door Podcast stickers made.
00:04:32
Speaker
I'd love to send them to you. No charge. um But speaking of community, we are connecting with um local establishments and more of a cocktail lounge that has a really cool room and we're going to record a live episode here in Denton, Texas in a few weeks.
00:04:49
Speaker
We've got a couple of co-workers, a couple of friends who said they'd really like to come on the pod. So we thought let's get together in a ah place that can comfortably seat all of us and do a live episode. So we're looking forward to doing that in a few weeks.
00:05:03
Speaker
But more news to that more news on that to come. I think that's all of the news. But I'm just very proud of this little podcast, the little community we're building.
00:05:13
Speaker
But more importantly, I just enjoy talking friends with you, Deanne. So thank you for everything you have brought to this pod. Well, thank you, Al. I was just telling Al off the air how much fun this is. and Like, it's just a fun thing to be a part of and to get to hang out and chit-chat about this ah show that we just all enjoy and connect. And then to know that people all over the world, which is wild, but we can all connect about something that's just so fun talk about.
00:05:49
Speaker
It is my, you know, even people that, I didn't, you know, ah just find out about it. Like, oh, the Purple Door, what a cool name. That's because of Monica's Door. So many people have this friends connection or can yeah remember what friends was like and what it meant to them back in the day, which will be a lot of what our live episode is about in a few weeks.
00:06:09
Speaker
So is it's just such a great community that we're looking forward to to slowly build.

Trivia Game and Childhood TV Memories

00:06:15
Speaker
But on that note, why don't we dig into one with the dozen lasagnas and have a good old-fashioned round of bamboozled because i believe oh Wait, I'm so sorry. No, no, please don't. Before I started like taking my notes and everything and and digging into the one with a dozen lasagnas, I went back um because on the last episode that we recorded, we were talking about the scene where Joey walks up Ross rosson Chandler's mom are kissing.
00:06:51
Speaker
yeah And there was apparently ah camera guy somewhere. I watched that scene a ridiculous amount of times on my internet version ah the DVD.
00:07:03
Speaker
I could never find it. Now the lighting in there is super weird. And there are a lot of shadows. Yes. ah And I don't know, it seemed like almost the way that the shadows were, it was almost like it was a naked bulb or something there because all the light was going everywhere.
00:07:22
Speaker
I could not find it. And I was really sad about it. So I just wanted to give that update. So I'm really glad you did because I'd forgotten about that. But we went back and watched it a couple of times, couldn't see it.
00:07:35
Speaker
And then I was going to ask you you, know, because as we've discovered, there's different scenes on the streaming platform. and the the dvd and i thought well maybe the dvd scene is longer or something we couldn't see it either so i think it's a yeah and i don't know i don't know it's certainly not something we could see so really i'm glad i'm sure it's somewhere out there it's just not in the streaming or in the uncut dvd yes so good Good information, that is. If you've seen it out there, listeners, let us know.
00:08:06
Speaker
And let us know how you saw it, because now it's become a thing. I want to see if it is true on some old version, maybe when it was shown on you know street guard TBS or whatever it is.
00:08:19
Speaker
Okay, i i have a this is making me think of something else now. But you remember that movie, um Three Men and a Baby? I do indeed. Tom Selleck, right?
00:08:30
Speaker
Yes. yeah Yes. Okay. And Steve Guttenberg and then over ah the guy from Cheers. yeah But do you remember the cutout of the kid that was in the background in one of the scenes?
00:08:45
Speaker
And it was like this huge, big thing. you know what's funny? I remember the story more than the scene. Because I've heard this. I've seen the movie. It's been a very long time.
00:08:56
Speaker
But yeah, there a cut out of baby somewhere. Remind me of that story. Not of a baby, but it was of a boy. And then the story he was that it was a kid. it was actually a ghost and they had died on set.
00:09:08
Speaker
And oh I remember like going and when we would watch it on VHS and go back and And like they'd walk by and then in the curtains, you could see this kid standing there and it's like, oh, it's a ghost.
00:09:20
Speaker
And then it ended up being the story that they put out was that, you know, it was a cutout from another movie that just kind of got stuck back there. How that happens, I don't know.
00:09:31
Speaker
But this cameraman looking for the cameraman, that made me think of that. ah Interesting. Yeah, I've forgotten about that story. It's sort of all coming back to me now.
00:09:42
Speaker
and was a great ghost story. Right. and I remember like getting chills whenever I'm, it's really there. Right. It's a ghost. Well, now the folklore of the mysterious cameraman in this scene. We'll see if anyone has something to add.
00:10:00
Speaker
Well, I am somewhat embarrassed to tell you I've written down nine questions. This is getting out to out of control over here. Okay, so I've got seven. Okay, so.
00:10:11
Speaker
And this morning, Joseph and i he's like, yeah, you should definitely ask that. But I feel like Al's going to ask it. So it's going to be whoever asks it first. So there is. So there are two questions I was going to write down, but both Kate and I said to each other, i bet Wilson's going to ask that one.
00:10:25
Speaker
So we didn't write them down. It's funny. We've gotten to this point where we're guessing what you're going to ask. So I tell, why don't I'll go first this week? Because I've got more. And if there's any, yeah if we get there, I'll score them off.
00:10:37
Speaker
um Yeah, I think we're going to have a lot of duplicate questions and that's just fine. So I'm just going to do mine in order. After the initial singing of a song in the opening scene, what song does Ross try to start but then get shut down?
00:10:56
Speaker
It's um the theme from I Dream of Jeannie. You are, I did not know this. I had to, had Kate did, and then, yes, yeah I've never seen I Dream of Jeannie. I've heard of it, never seen it.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yeah. But you must be something famous. Well, okay, and so here's the deal. My first question is, what was the scene thought theme song that all of them were humming?
00:11:18
Speaker
That is The Odd Couple. That's right. And so let me tell you, i could hum that whole song. I knew that theme song. I know that theme song.
00:11:30
Speaker
Right. And I knew the second one too. I could not have told you. i had to go and look and see the answer was because I did not know. i can hum them along with you, but I didn't know. So then very similar. again I've never seen the odd couple.
00:11:46
Speaker
don't i know it's I think I know the name, but I knew the song, but I didn't. A, didn't know what it was from, and B, when I found out i've never seen the show. But it's just one of those. See, Joseph was like, I have never, never heard that song. I don't know why you know that.
00:12:02
Speaker
See, I think I just know it from friends, to be honest. I think that's where I know it from more than anything else from having seen it times over the years. See, I remember watching both of those shows. are Not really watching, but them being on in the background when I was a kid.
00:12:21
Speaker
So, who is Monica on the phone with in the scene after the opening credits when she's getting a lasagna out of the oven? Aunt Syl... Well, she says Aunt Sylve.
00:12:32
Speaker
Yes. um So I would assume Aunt Sylvia. i just... We listen to New Times and is credited as Aunt Syl.
00:12:43
Speaker
But yeah, so obviously you're right. But we had to go back and double check. um But yeah, Aunt Syl, Sylvia, whatever it may be. Yes. Okay.
00:12:55
Speaker
Why did the table break? Because Joey threw his keys on it. I love that scene so much. And there's nothing to it. I think that's the beauty of It's just the way they stand and stare at it, which we'll get into.
00:13:10
Speaker
I love that. I love it so much. And I love that I didn't write that question down. Another scene I love. When Joey pretends his hand is the baby and does that voice, what three questions does he ask?
00:13:25
Speaker
Oh, wow. Yeah. I figured you might know how many questions. know last one is, what's a lesbian? Indeed. he says, why don't you live with mommy? Yes. So you got two
00:13:39
Speaker
The last one is related to the first one. It's sort of similar.
00:13:47
Speaker
Is it about Susan? Like, who is that lady? Ding, ding, ding. Yep. How come you don't live with mummy? How come mummy lives with that other lady? And what's a lesbian? So yes. Three for three. Well done.
00:14:00
Speaker
Yes.
00:14:03
Speaker
Okay, so Joseph and I talked about this and and he was like, don't ask it like that. He's like, ask it the other way because oh I feel like the other way would be easier.
00:14:14
Speaker
So I'm asking it the hard way. Okay. Because that's what Joseph suggested. I like it. Who does Ross think looks like Huey Lewis?
00:14:26
Speaker
That's the very next question on my list. That'd be their friend Tanya. Yes. I knew we'd have to double up at some point. Which I even Googled Huey Lewis because I know Huey Lewis in the news. I know the music. us I don't know if I know what he looks like.
00:14:42
Speaker
So, you know, had to go back and double to just have a look and see if he was... and You know, why did they choose Huey Lewis? For no reason. But it's still very funny. Ooh. Ooh.
00:14:53
Speaker
Hmm. There was some rabbit trail I went down that that there's a connection to something that like Huey Lewis was connected to something that was connected to something that was connected to Matthew Perry.
00:15:08
Speaker
I love that. It's like six, was it six degrees or seven degrees of Kevin Right. And so how does Kevin Bacon turn into that? Attach into that. I love it. All right. I've got two particularly hard questions for you, I feel. and I'm going to give you one of them now. Okay. Okay.
00:15:24
Speaker
It's very rare that Kate doesn't know the answer to a question. Very rare. Yes. This was one of them. When Ross beeps up to Carol's after he's left, but again decides to not find out the sex of the baby, but we see a poster celebrating the 25th anniversary of a very famous event in a New York bar.
00:15:44
Speaker
It's very appropriate for Carol and Susan to have this poster, and the timeline is correct for them to have recently put it up. What was the name of the famous event?
00:15:56
Speaker
Oh my gosh. it's It's stupid heart. I just noticed and I thought that's a really cool touch. That is. I already know that whatever you're about to tell me because I have literally no... Hang on.
00:16:10
Speaker
let's Let's think. Is it a women's march or something? You're you're in the right? yeah no but you're not a million miles away. It's not a women's march. I'm just guessing. I'm like, okay, in the 90s, 25 years before... was 1960s. What'd you say?
00:16:26
Speaker
Woodstock? Not Woodstock. Woodstock. not woodstock and Kate hadn't heard of the answer, i'm goingnna be to be honest with you. Okay. okay I'll give you the answer. The answer is the Stonewall Riots.
00:16:40
Speaker
I don't know if you've heard of them. Was it the Stonewall Bar? Okay. Tell me more. I should have Googled this and deep-dived into it, but the Stonewall Bar was a sort of underground, I believe, gay bar in Lower Manhattan, and it was raided, stormed,
00:16:58
Speaker
And there ended up being these riots that were basically a pivotal moment in the gay rights movement in New York in the late 60s. And they had a big poster up celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots at the Stonewall Bar up on their wall, which would have only been able to be put up in 1994 because it happened in 1969.

Significance of Stonewall Riots Poster

00:17:20
Speaker
So it was quite an appropriate thing for them to have put up because obviously being a lesbian couple, that's something that would be relevant to them. Wow. Yeah. Wow. Yes.
00:17:32
Speaker
That was ridiculously hard. It's all stupid hard. It's not as hard as another question I have for you. That's brutally unfair, but we'll talk about that later.
00:17:42
Speaker
I love that. Okay. See, and I was, I was feeling very self-conscious about some of ah like questions that I've asked in the past. Like why on earth would anybody have noticed that? I love those questions. So I'm back to it for the next episode. Perfect.
00:17:59
Speaker
Perfect. I love it. All right. What are the three things about Phoebe that that Rachel needed to know? You know what? I thought about this last night. Rachel needs to know because I'm going to get this. i feel like maybe I'm to get this slightly wrong.
00:18:16
Speaker
She doesn't lie. Correct. Correct.
00:18:22
Speaker
I know it's something to do with the... She makes the world's best oatmeal reason cookies. Which are disgusting. Yes. You and I agree. That's Kate's favorite cookie. Why would you want a bit of fruit in your cookie? Joseph has those two.
00:18:33
Speaker
Why? Yeah. Why? If you want to eat fruit, eat some fruit. Now... um I'm okay with the oatmeal and chocolate chip, per se. but Okay. Those are solid cookies. Why you want to put raisins in there? Right.
00:18:45
Speaker
Chocolate chips. Like you want to add the oatmeal, little bit fiber. Great. Yes. Carry on. Yes. there needs to be no raisins but the chocolate chips. It's like um apples. i love apples.
00:18:58
Speaker
All that sort of stuff. I don't like ah i don't like fruit in dessert. I don't know why. It's just a thing. And raisins and cookies should be banned. I'm against it. If any political candidate takes that stance, they have my vote.
00:19:11
Speaker
Dan, at this point. So, oatmeal, raisin, cookies. She doesn't lie, and there is something else I knew I would forget. it Let me think if I can play this in my head. um
00:19:25
Speaker
Nope, it's gone. It's gone. First thing, ferns are the most important thing in her life. Yes. Yes. That's it. ah All right.
00:19:36
Speaker
Now I'll never forget it. um I had to and frame this question carefully. What does Joey leave impressions in that left little to the imagination?
00:19:48
Speaker
The butter. The butter, yes. And we won't deep dive into that. But I thought. All
00:19:56
Speaker
all right. What religion is Joey? i He's ah my Catholic friend. Uh-huh. Yes. Yes. Which I was, i I wanted to go back and revisit because couple of um episodes ago, whenever Joey is like, whenever you die, you just die.
00:20:14
Speaker
Right. Warm food. Yes. Yes. And, um and all of that. And I'm like, okay, so then there's one where he's like, oh, my Catholic, ah you know, your Catholic friend, Joey. Yes. Yeah.
00:20:24
Speaker
Talking about the anti-Paulo. That's right. Yes. Yeah, but I thought, I was like, is see, i think I think Joey just says thanks sometimes. I think so. Whatever it it is.
00:20:37
Speaker
He strikes me as a bit of a lapsed Catholic, but we'll explore that as we move on. That is fair. Yes. All right, this is the other stupid hard question just because I saw it and I thought this is interesting.
00:20:51
Speaker
There's a scene with three ladies sitting at a table and one of them says, I can't remember if she says actually no. ah Can we get some coffee over here? Can we get cappuccino? Cappuccino.
00:21:02
Speaker
We'll talk about that scene as we get into the episode. Yes. um Related to that scene. How much are Central Park t-shirts?
00:21:15
Speaker
Uh-huh. I didn't notice this till about the third go around. Whoa, it's in that scene whenever you see, and that's the only time you ever see it. yeah You know what, I'll just give you hint. Just tell me, I want to guess.
00:21:30
Speaker
Okay, yeah, there's there' is a paper sign in the background, literally a piece of paper, like almost like it looks like it's almost just nailed to the wall, it says t-shirts, X amount. $9.99. $10, you get the point, you get the point, $10.
00:21:47
Speaker
And it just says T-shirt's $10, and it looks like it's just a last-minute thought piece of paper i stuck on the wall. And i don't I didn't even notice it the first time.
00:21:58
Speaker
We ended up watching this episode three times because we like it. Yeah. $10 for Central Park T-shirt. Probably not that price anymore, but um that one Do you have any more questions for me? I've lost track this. I do. I have two more.
00:22:13
Speaker
Oh, beautiful. All right. All right. What time is it when monica or when Joey and Chandler kick Monica out of their apartment? That is 2.30 in the morning.
00:22:25
Speaker
And I love that. I love that. don't know why. It's just 2.30, such a specific time. and Let's see. Just go home. Just go home. You want another game? Sure.
00:22:36
Speaker
know What did Chandler and his previous roommate buy before things got ugly?
00:22:46
Speaker
It's not a walk. you are you're You're not far away. i know I'm not. It's a hibachi. It is a hibachi. Well done.
00:22:57
Speaker
Which I did Google because I thought that would be a more of like an outdoor grill thing. But you can get electric ones that plug in and stuff. So I was thinking they don't have a balcony. All of that. How would they have a hibachi? But a little Googling showed me what they probably did. All right. Do you have one more for me?
00:23:15
Speaker
i do. Let's see if it's the same one as I've got one. I've got one more for you too. So. All right. So wait, you go, right? No, I just did the Hibachi one question. You got it right. You did. yeahp Okay.
00:23:30
Speaker
So what are the three tables Joey and Chandler can consider whenever they're in the table to store? bless it I was looking over my notes right before we started recording and I wrote down two of the three in my sort of show notes.
00:23:46
Speaker
And those are, and it's the second and the third one, birds yeah and then, um, lady bugs or lady birds. Um, depending what side of the Atlantic you're on.
00:23:57
Speaker
um Oh, well, that's interesting. There you go. Let's not forget to be happy when we get to that scene, because I have never in my life heard that. Yes.
00:24:08
Speaker
So I'm excited. If you remember to bring that up, I've got a funny story to tell you about that word. But the first one, and I know it's the first one, I forgot to write it down. So I'm just going to guess.
00:24:21
Speaker
They did birds, they did bugs.
00:24:25
Speaker
It's not sailboats, is it? Nope. No, I don't know. I've no idea. Patio furniture. Patio. The irony. Right?
00:24:37
Speaker
The irony. I forgot. I can't believe i forgot that altogether. he and love that. And I love that you didn't ask my last question because it's a stupid line that makes me chuckle.
00:24:49
Speaker
But I hadn't made the connection about the patio furniture because I'd forgotten it. That's a great... A great, um what's the word? It's not callback. What's the opposite of callback? Foreshadowing. Foreshadowing. That's the one.
00:25:02
Speaker
Great foreshadowing. What team does Joey say Ross could be on? Olympic standing there team. Which for no reason makes me laugh a lot more than it should.
00:25:15
Speaker
Just picturing a standing there team. I think it's just fantastic. Monica be. Yeah. um I love it. Well, I love that the the bamboozled has gone on for the best part of 20 minutes. I love these questions going back and forth.
00:25:32
Speaker
And the feedback I've got is we could listen to an hour of bamboozled from people. They love a other parts that few people told me they like playing along with us. Yes, we ask some pretty great questions. We do indeed tap ourselves on the pat ourselves on the back, I think. Well, and I want to tell you something. So in that scene in the table store, I was trying to read, there was like one of those signs and it was white with the black letters.
00:25:58
Speaker
And I was trying to read it because I was going to ask you what it said, but I couldn't read the sign in the background. But I was like, I feel like it says something ridiculous.
00:26:09
Speaker
And I really... but That would have been right there with your poster question. Yes. You know what i I'm sorry. You were saying telling me that and it reminded me of something. I've just i've got to write down at the end of my notes because I have another little announcement to make at the end of notes.

Personal Stories and Announcements

00:26:28
Speaker
So I'm just right. Sorry, this is terrible podcasting. But I'm going to write this down right now before I forget. So thank you listeners for listening along. did if I'm not going to tell you what it is yet.
00:26:42
Speaker
And there we go. Well, we kind of talked about the opening scene a little bit where they're humming the theme from the odd couple. And then Ross tries to get there, you know, to join in with, um, I dream of Jeannie.
00:26:54
Speaker
And we've, ah I was going to ask you if you're familiar with these shows, but you're saying that you remember them being on, but not really watching or engaging with them. Um, Again, these are shows that I'm sort of, again, I know the name, couldn't tell you anything about them.
00:27:09
Speaker
But as we've talked about before, I did my American citizenship test last summer. And these are the things that I think they should make you do rather than, you know, who's the 14th president? What's the Ninth Amendment? All that sort of stuff. now you know Go home and do your homework. Watch A Dream of Jeannie.
00:27:25
Speaker
things like that, write a page review of it. ah I think that should, I think that'd be much more exciting myself. Some pop culture kind of thing. Right. I think people should know about these. It's a fun beginning, like why they did that.
00:27:39
Speaker
There's got to be a reason because it's so different from other openings. um But lots of fun. Lots of fun indeed. But we go from there. we we jump in let's let's discuss something that was weird.
00:27:53
Speaker
yeah Just because we're going to just point out every time that there's something just very strange. As we should. Why on earth did Ross have his leg in Monica's lap?
00:28:06
Speaker
Like what is happening there? there's There's a sort of, I can't think of the words. It's not a weird relationship, but it's a perhaps slightly overly open, uncomfortable for, I don't know.
00:28:22
Speaker
Yeah. You know, they talk things. So whenever you're out in public with Sally. Right. You just and have your leg propped up in her lap. Probably not.
00:28:33
Speaker
It's not something I've ever done. No. I can say with 100% certainty. Yes. I've got a younger brother who is awesome and amazing. And love him dearly. But that's, no.
00:28:45
Speaker
No. And you know, not thinking about it, like I would... I suppose maybe I would with Kate if we were just in a sort of sectioned off bit with close friends. But even that, you're in a public place.
00:28:58
Speaker
You know, like it's something I would think twice about. i Maybe. i don't know. But not with your sister. Anybody other than your spouse, I think that would be kind of weird. But o oh yeah definitely, definitely, sister. I'm glad you brought that up.
00:29:13
Speaker
But thankfully, go ahead. hateer hate or hate it they so I her. I'm hating on Ross again. Again, and we'll discuss that because but there was a small discussion in our um our little purple door club on Facebook about Ross.
00:29:28
Speaker
ah But Monica gets herself out of this potentially awkward situation and ends up in the apartment. She's on the phone with Aunt Syl, who I guess had forgotten to request vegetarian lasagnas.
00:29:39
Speaker
um I was going to ask you how many lasagnas were stacked on the table. um and don't know if you happened to catch that. I didn't. didn't, but I know that there was a lot.
00:29:52
Speaker
There was three stacked on the table, one in a hand, and then I think others scattered around. But it looked like three had been baked, baked to completion there. And of course, jump in with your thoughts.
00:30:05
Speaker
um You know, Ross is reading the baby book. and To me, it's again, it might be a throwaway thing to some, but i love Joey doing the I'm your baby thing with his hand. It's such a simple joke, but he's done so well.
00:30:18
Speaker
um Ross can find his way out of, as you say, any usuris, no compass. yeah Something like that. um Reading up, doing his homework. give We'll give Ross little props here. He's trying to be the best dad he can be, certainly at this point.
00:30:35
Speaker
Yeah. Paolo and Rachel enter and they talk about going to the poke a nose. Paolo. We have feelings on Paolo. I just have questions.
00:30:46
Speaker
How in the world is their relationship at the point where they're going away for the weekend when they but he really doesn't speak much English at all, it would appear? Well, he was gone forever to Italy.
00:31:01
Speaker
Right. but You know, I don't know. His English is very limited. She speaks no Italian. And suddenly they're going, i mean, how do they go out for even a dinner, I would think.
00:31:13
Speaker
I don't know. It seems to me like it'd but it'd be a bit of a struggle. And suddenly she's able to communicate that they're going away for the weekend to the Poconos, to her sister's cabin.
00:31:24
Speaker
Just think it's a bit odd, myself.
00:31:29
Speaker
Ross, full sad sack mode, saying the flings should be flung by now. ah hu yeah i love that I love that part whenever because like what Paolo walks off and then she's in the kitchen talking to the girls and Ross is in there and then cutting back and forth I thought that was so clever and funny she's like I just feel that he's nauseated you know but just the timing of it is so spot on and funny it was To me, it was kind of like, you know, it's one set, obviously, but then they kind of cut it into two for just that moment and they bounce back and forth.
00:32:07
Speaker
Like, obviously, Ross can hear them, and assuming that Rachel can't hear Ross's comment, it's so well done. Yes. um I love that. um Well, no okay, wait.
00:32:20
Speaker
Can it just, real quick, ah whenever Rachel is talking about at her sister's place... Yes. um We know later she's got Reese Witherspoon. I don't remember her, but she's the younger one and and all that.
00:32:37
Speaker
But then there's also, I'm assuming that the sister's place, it would be the Christina Applegate sister because she's the older one, right? Right.
00:32:48
Speaker
But I thought that was strange because there's nothing about her that would make me think that she... is would be somebody who has multiple homes.
00:32:59
Speaker
Absolutely not. And so let's assume that a home in the Poconos, even weekend, can is going to be expensive. Oh, right. Yeah, I agree with you. Which sister has house in the Poconos?
00:33:14
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, Amy is the one that's k Christina Applegate, right? Okay. And she's no we know she's not married, right, because she's dating a married guy.
00:33:27
Speaker
right. Doesn't appear to be professionally successful. But I'm trying to remember what, I can't remember name, Reese Witherspoon, that sister, what she does for a living or her marital situation. I don't remember. don't think she works. Right.
00:33:39
Speaker
Right. So I don't know. Yeah, we'll need to. Again, this is just a ah level of like I'm a normal middle class kind of girl who.
00:33:50
Speaker
Right. You know, doesn't have a lot of money. and But that just seemed weird. like you don't You don't have a home in the Poconos? Yes.
00:34:00
Speaker
Yeah, I don't. No. Me either. Well, we go from there to. I think we're both going to love this next sort scene where the boys are in the hallway and Joey's getting in touch with his sort of paternal side, I suppose. You know, the little baby, the little this, the little that.
00:34:21
Speaker
The little shoes and the little toes. You need to stop that forever. um And then as you discussed in Bamboozle, Joey throws his key. Oh, before that.
00:34:34
Speaker
There was a continuity error. I don't know if you spotted this. Is it the numbers on the door? It's the numbers on the door. Yes. So the first episode or two, I didn't go back and check. It was four and five.
00:34:46
Speaker
It changed to 19 and 20. We're back to four and five again. I'm not sure for how long. But yeah again, maybe these were filmed out of order rather than changing the numbers back.
00:34:57
Speaker
So we'll maybe guess that. One of the things that I was reading about was saying that when ah that it's possible whenever they were filming... like they filmed all the scenes with Paulo together.
00:35:11
Speaker
Ah, interesting. then, you know, so maybe. That allows for a little movement. I like that. um And then they go in and Joey throws his keys on the table. I was trying to see, you know, it's safe to assume that that ah the leg that breaks was already broken. And I was guessing somebody, a stagehand had a bit of string that they pulled. up trying to see if you could see it, but I couldn't make out, you know, it was cut out of the bottom of the scene.
00:35:37
Speaker
but Right. Again, and it's just a standing in silence. Gonna need a new table or whatever they say. It's just just fantastic. Yes, yes. Now, my question to you is, I was going to ask you if you've ever broken a piece of furniture, but that seems a little obscure. So what was the last piece of furniture you and Joseph bought?
00:35:57
Speaker
Oh, okay. Yeah. The last piece of furniture. Well, we bought, we just bought Fred, my my older son, brand new bed. Well, there you go.
00:36:09
Speaker
So there you go. And that's been within the last couple of months. But i can also tell you the last piece of furniture I completely ruined. Oh, that we'd love to hear that story. Okay.
00:36:19
Speaker
So my mom bought this very, very pretty table at her house. And it's like one of those tall tables. So you have to have like the tall, the tall chairs and all that.
00:36:32
Speaker
And she, she is very, you know, meticulous about choosing furniture. And, and so it took her a long time to like pick it out and decide. And, and so it was a big deal whenever she purchased this in the chairs and she's had it for a long time.
00:36:51
Speaker
And I was over there and it's nice. Like it's got the big round tabletop and it's got a lazy Susan in the middle on the top. And then underneath it's got like storage containers and it's very nice.
00:37:07
Speaker
And um I was over there one day and I, I, we were, I was doing something with our nails. It might've been my brother, like whenever he got married and I was, we were trying to take off her, like, because she went and got a manicure.
00:37:25
Speaker
we were trying to get the gel polish off because some of it had started peeling or something like that. And um i brought over my heavy duty acetone.
00:37:38
Speaker
And so, you know, you put the acetone and then you, you put the acetone on it right and wrap it around your finger. okay I spilled the acetone and right immediately, immediately took the finish completely off of this huge chunk of the wood.
00:37:59
Speaker
in the middle of her table and uh she was very very very upset i could but i ended up purchasing and and a new top to the table so i made it right you made it right i ruined it all in about seconds right twenty four right Suddenly life got out of control and just... Oh, just... that Life has a way of doing that. Just on a dime. yeah my ah What is happening? but My spring break to-do list is refinishing the counters in the kitchen. We've got butcher's blocks of the wood because... Yes. Very quickly, it's a very similar story, which is why I'll tell it.
00:38:41
Speaker
um We had a bit of sudden plum plumbing emergency under the sink a few weeks ago. And I have some fairly industrial uh stuff that'll clean out the pipes it'll dissolve anything in there um you know it's it's these sort of granules you pour down and then some some boiling water and that stuff stinks anyway i poured it down to try and get rid of this clog that it caused under the sink to flood and it kind of overflowed again and got over all the little um
00:39:16
Speaker
the bottles and things that we keep under the sink, the cleaners and things. And I'm just trying to clean out under there so I can dry it. So put all the bottles on the countertop, on the the butcher's block, and in the end, fix the plumbing problem, got all that solved, replace what had to replace. it But when I put all the cleaning supplies up on wooden butcher's block, the acid was actually on the bottles and drip down so now we've got all these little stains of circular where it's eaten away at the finish so yeah that is on my to-do list is to sand all that down and refinish it it'll be good as new but a very similar story which is quite funny yes you know because it wasn't acetone but it was this uh drain unclogger stuff um and it just happens like that yes suddenly you're in this panic and it's
00:40:07
Speaker
Yes, and and then it's all ruined. All ruined. So we've got, that's my to-do list. Anyway, what a sidetrack that was. But I love it. I love that we've got very similar stories.
00:40:18
Speaker
um So yeah, they decide they're going to have to have to get a new table. We go from there over to Carol and Susan's where Ross brings the baby books back in the lasagna.
00:40:29
Speaker
um Yeah, is it vegetarian? Because Susan doesn't eat meat. Pretty sure. Yeah, sure. um And then, you know, oh I didn't know you met Huey Lewis. All these these funny lines that Ross has certainly.
00:40:47
Speaker
We started to suddenly get into the baby gender conversation. um Yes. You know, Carol, Susan, Ross, he doesn't want to know. Now, if you don't mind me asking, did you find out about the boys prior to birth?
00:41:01
Speaker
So Fred, my first, yes my oldest, we did not. We did not find out. We actually had the doctor put it inside of a card in case we wanted to find out later in the pregnancy and then we could open it.
00:41:16
Speaker
We didn't find out and it was... Awesome. It was so cool because I was I really didn't want to find out ah with George. The doctor called. They had told we did a sonogram. They she couldn't tell for sure that she thought he was a girl, but she couldn't tell for sure.
00:41:34
Speaker
And then they called me on the phone and they were like, we have the blood results. Do you want to know them? And I said, yes. And she told me, and then I was like, I can't believe I just said yes. And here we are. Like it was nothing. Yeah.
00:41:50
Speaker
Like it was no big deal. So what about you? So we found out, have two girls and, um, yeah, we found out with both of them. Um, I really didn't mind.
00:42:01
Speaker
I'd be, I would have been fine not knowing. but I sort of understood the practical side of things. You know, that that was the argument. You know, then we know what to get and whether, especially the second, because we had all the girl stuff and was like, we don't want to buy a whole bunch of new stuff if it's a second girl, all of that.
00:42:20
Speaker
And I just didn't, I wasn't that bothered either way. So I was like, okay, that makes sense. Now, by the time this episode comes out, it will be complete public knowledge. I did do the timing of this in my head that I'm going to be a granddad for the first time.
00:42:35
Speaker
My daughter, Macy, is three months pregnant. i'm She and her fiance are very, very excited. And they they're planning an announcement in three weeks. So it'll be right about the time this comes out.
00:42:46
Speaker
So I'm not um ruining anything by talking about this now, but it's quite exciting for them because they're going to find out this coming week. They did, Macy did the blood work almost two weeks ago and Jackson, her fiance is in the army and has been away for six weeks.
00:43:06
Speaker
And he actually got back where they live in Kansas, came back last night. And this sort of they said it could take up to two weeks for them to get the blood work back. That two weeks is up on Thursday.
00:43:18
Speaker
So Macy is beyond thrilled because she didn't she was dreading getting the email. and then And apparently she was explain it was explained to her that you can open the email and the email will have a link.
00:43:32
Speaker
It does not say in the email if it's a boy or a girl. You have to click on the link. And she was dreading having that email sitting there before she and Jackson would find it together. Waiting. So now, thankfully, Jackson is back.
00:43:44
Speaker
And they're going to find out, obviously, together. Have their moment together. Take their time. And thenll then they'll FaceTime me and let us know. That's so sweet. It's so sweet. That's exciting.
00:43:55
Speaker
So much stuff sitting in the old Amazon cart. Just waiting for. Just waiting. Waiting to know. But um yeah, we see Ross leaving and you know it's quite funny. I like the fact he calls back and nevermind. I don't want to know. um with that on the i want to Oh, sorry. I just want to say I wrote down in here, they have a new TV cabinet.
00:44:20
Speaker
That's really funny you mentioned that because I did think about your your your very hard question about the what store did the box land's end and I looked for it in this.
00:44:32
Speaker
Yeah, and it's a completely different setup. I was like, wow. And then like the bookcases that Ross was looking at, those are gone. And so i Susan and and um Carol, they they redid their apartment.
00:44:50
Speaker
So if I don't say this now, I'll forget because I thought about this last night and didn't write it in my notes. Well, we will maybe talk about this later on, but in Chandler and Joey's apartment, there's a lot of furniture changed there.
00:45:02
Speaker
that is different from a things prior and things in the future. And I think I've mentioned it before that I read, and I need to pay more attention to this, the set decoration of Central Park was updated every three episodes. They changed a few things every three episodes to try and keep it fresh.
00:45:20
Speaker
um They didn't overhaul everything, of course, but just things on the wall, where have things were situated. And i would there's got to be somebody out there who has tracked...
00:45:31
Speaker
the decorations in the apartments in Central Park. Somebody has watched the this series, I'm sure, and I would love to find that person and do a podcast with them about the interior decorations of Monica's place, Chandler and Joey's place, and Central Park.
00:45:48
Speaker
um And ah evidently Carol and Susan's as well, because they seem to change furniture and decorations a lot. Yes. I would love to discuss that at a later date with you.
00:45:59
Speaker
which which is interesting because like and you can walk into my house and i look at pictures of the kids of the kids look like totally different people but the background of my house looks exactly the same as it does today see kate and we love in in like it's not really interior decorating we've got lots of bits and pieces and we're always trying to oh that would look great in our house do we have space for it we like you know a lot of that stuff. So it changes a reasonable amount, but now I think we're fairly settled actually on the decoration of the house. I don't think it's going to change too much.
00:46:34
Speaker
Yeah. But let's see, where are we on our list? So yeah, Ross, I don't want to know, but we go back over to the boys apartment and I love the way they're eating the lasagna on their knees and they're talking about getting a table and, um,
00:46:51
Speaker
Joey proposes splitting the cost, which is interesting, again, foreshadowing about eight or nine seasons to where he wants to split the cost of a new fridge. or Oh, yeah. Or, you know, Rachel or Ross.
00:47:03
Speaker
God, love the way he sort of throws Ross into the fridge or whatever it is. That's like eight seasons away. um Yes. But, you know, proposes splitting the cost. And obviously there's some sensitive feelings about Kip.
00:47:16
Speaker
And this is Kip a better roommate than me. And again, it just makes them sound like an old married couple. um I wondered what you thought the protocol would be here.
00:47:27
Speaker
Chandler lived there longer than Joey because Chandler was there with Kip. Don't really know the timeframe, but let's say a couple of years and Joey had been there a year. I don't know.
00:47:38
Speaker
What do you think the protocol would be about buying the table?
00:47:44
Speaker
Well, ah yeah. I didn't know, to be fair. ah be Yeah, I mean, because I've had roommates before. Right. and we just kind of like if you brought it and there it is, then whenever you leave, then it's yours.
00:48:03
Speaker
Right. But like, and that, I would think that you would, if one person did not want to purchase it, like with the idea that you know, I, it's mine.
00:48:16
Speaker
And so after we're, if the situation stops, it's mine and we go with it, then you would split, split it. That's what I'm thinking. And also my thought was if you have roommates, you're probably not staying there long-term necessarily. i I wouldn't go to,
00:48:35
Speaker
like a specific furniture store to purchase a brand new take a table store I'd be off to the thrift store charity shop i mean Facebook marketplace but we do know that the the ads exist because Joey sells his um entertainment unit later you know I'd be looking for something second hand and cheap because yeah mean this isn't somewhere you've purchased right again new York apartment living is maybe a bit different but still and I wouldn't go, like you, I wouldn't go to a table store.
00:49:11
Speaker
um But we go from there to Phoebe's, forget I don't know if we ever know the name but at this point, the massage place where she works. um I don't know if you notice, but the the receptionist, we'll assume she is, who comes in to say that you know an appointment's been moved and I don't want sound unprofessional, but yum or whatever is she says about power.
00:49:32
Speaker
She also plays a waitress in Central Park. um at some point. um I can't remember if it's before this or after this, but um she does play one a waitress, which I kind of love because it's perfectly feasible.
00:49:48
Speaker
ah Yeah. You know, she could go from being receptionist to a waitress nearby.
00:49:56
Speaker
I wonder, is it whenever he's running around trying about the copy the copy shop, the Kinko's lady? At that point, she still works with Phoebe because her brother is Isaac.
00:50:11
Speaker
And she tells Isaac. And then Isaac is roommates with Gunther, which we find out later. which I love the idea. I think. think That's how it gets to Gunther who tells Rachel. Okay, because I'm like, I know that I've seen her before, but I can't think of a waitress in... i can't. Yeah, I'll need to look it up. That'll be fun.
00:50:35
Speaker
We'll make notes to but be sure to keep an eye out. Keep an eye out. Her name is in real life Cynthia Mann. she's beat She was on quite a few shows, you know, Little Rolls. um E.R., r Will and Grace, King of the Hill...
00:50:48
Speaker
Suddenly, Susan, just shoot me. you Lots of things that were quite big in the 90s. I didn't see any credits past 2009, so don't know if she's retired or doing something else. But, you know she was, while she wasn't, you know didn't have any big breakout roles per se, she was in ah decent amount of stuff.
00:51:06
Speaker
ah But here she, said you know, announces the schedule changes and then Powell will come again. Yeah. And let's see, ah is this, yeah, this is still the same scene.
00:51:17
Speaker
I don't think we cut anywhere else where Paolo then makes, as they say, makes a pass at Phoebe.
00:51:24
Speaker
um Because he he says he's going to be naked and this, that, and the other. Touches are completely inappropriately. I mean, just ludicrous what he's thinking. He must live in his own world at this point.
00:51:37
Speaker
um I can't remember if that's all in this scene. nope that's later on. No, because he he takes off his robe and she's like, ah, and she gives him the she.
00:51:47
Speaker
And then the next scene, she walks in and then it's like flashbacks, which is interesting because one of the flashbacks that I see, you didn't see.
00:51:58
Speaker
Aha, all right. And Yeah, so they walk into the coffee shop and then they start, you know, they're talking about the baby. And then, fun fact, did you notice all of the blue?
00:52:11
Speaker
In this episode. Yes. But why? Because Ross's baby's a boy. I did not catch that. And so that was the hint until the very end whenever we all find out he's a baby boy. I noticed it was in Phoebe's massage room.
00:52:29
Speaker
that And her bag she's carrying. I didn't notice that. And Monica's clothes. And Rachel's clothes. Everybody's in blue. um Chandler's shirt.
00:52:41
Speaker
with the It's ugly. He's wearing a terrible blue. Yes, yes. But it's like blue with like the brown here. But everybody is wearing blue in this episode. Not everybody because Joey's not.
00:52:53
Speaker
But there is so much blue. That's a great little tip of information. I i didn't i just noticed it in Phoebe's, in the massage room, thinking usually that blue could be an earth tone,
00:53:08
Speaker
But know usually these places are very zen and browns and greens in my head. I've had a couple of massages in my life. I just remember thinking it looked a little clinical, like like hospital sheets and things, like that blue.
00:53:21
Speaker
ah But that's the reason. That's really interesting. I love that we watch this show together, but we see different things. I think it makes it a great podcast, I think. um So I guess at this point...
00:53:35
Speaker
We're back in Central Park and Monica reveals that she knows the sex of the baby because Carol called to thank for the lasagna. um Yes. Phoebe comes in and is upset, but she does, I think at this point, yeah, going in sort of the minutia of the timeline.
00:53:51
Speaker
I wanted to talk to you about the weird angle. We had to work out where this was of the three women sitting and one asks for the cappuccino. Because I think it's the, we thought initially Kate and I, that it was as we're looking at the couch scooched off to the left, but we're wrong. It's definitely in the back of central park.
00:54:11
Speaker
Um, Because you can see one of the posters in the background a little bit. Okay. And that's clearly on the back wall. And also the payphone you can see. And I'm assuming that little hallway where the payphone is. And that payphone back there. Yes. Because Ross goes to make a call. Yes. In some episodes. And I'm assuming that little bit where the payphone is, the toilets back there. Okay.
00:54:30
Speaker
In that little hallway. Yeah, because we initially thought that's a really weird thing. And it still is. I think it's the only time we see... that, a close-up of that table. Yes.
00:54:42
Speaker
Seems really rude of that lady to yell across the that's the coffee shop. but the Right, like if that's where it was, that was crazy. Yeah, yeah, don't do that. But then, let's see, Joey and Chandler are going to go to the table place, but Phoebe reveals, pal, we've made the pass out, that's right.
00:54:59
Speaker
um And they go, whoa, we'll be open tomorrow, or something. Yes. And then she explains the story, and Again, a little credit to Ross here, the acting at least, yeah's as a friend, as a woman, you need to, it's a feminist issue.
00:55:15
Speaker
Right. Well, okay. And so then the scene that I had that you didn't have is they were like, you know, he's... they say are you sure and then he grabs grabs her and then and what did you do she's like i handled it like a professional and then it flashes back to the massage place and she flips the sheet and he falls off the massage table all right about once a week i look at a look online And I'm like, all right, am I just going to buy these DVDs? I need to buy it. And i think I think it's coming.
00:55:47
Speaker
Yeah, well, that scene, like right then, the first time that I watched it and I was taking my notes, like I laughed at that one. And I'm like, I don't know why they cut that out. Because that was funny.
00:55:59
Speaker
Right, that's a fun I want to see that. Yeah. um All right, so we go to the table store at this point. And again, please, if I'm jumping ahead too far,
00:56:10
Speaker
I do actually think, and i need to and I have not checked this, I think the the table store might be the same store as the Mattress King from later seasons. um i think that I think the layout's the same. i could be completely wrong because I haven't checked.
00:56:27
Speaker
But it certainly, in the Mattress King, it certainly kind of goes from right to left. It might just be the way that they're walking through it a bit might be the same. But I want to go and check that.
00:56:38
Speaker
But yeah, as we discussed, patio furniture, um birds, and ladybugs slash ladybirds. Okay, and you have a story. I do, so very quick story. What on earth, why would you kill call those birds?
00:56:52
Speaker
I guess because they fly. i don't I've never really questioned it, but ladybirds.

Hiking Stories and Character Discussions

00:56:56
Speaker
So listeners won't know this, but I like to go hiking a lot and I've done some, you know, week long hikes and things.
00:57:04
Speaker
And last October I was in New Jersey hiking, the New Jersey section of the Appalachian Trail. Got to the place where I was going to set up my tent on, I think the second night, set up my tent. And there was, I think three other people in this area with tents set up.
00:57:19
Speaker
And so folklore of long distance hiking is um people sort of, can re-identify themselves. A lot of people go on these long-distance hikes after a monumental thing in their life. Sometimes it's upon retirement or the death of a loved one or that before you're in between changing careers.
00:57:38
Speaker
So there's a lot of thing about getting a trail name. And you can identify yourself because you can be whoever you want to be on the trail. um i've never And you a look you have to be given a trail name. are That's certainly there.
00:57:52
Speaker
There's no hard and fast rules, but the idea is you're given a trail name by people you meet. um I don't have a trail name at this point, but the lady that ah next to me introduced herself as Lady Bard.
00:58:04
Speaker
And again, that's how you introduce yourself on the trail, because the idea is you're separated from society a bit. a bit And it's, oh, Lady Bard, and she clearly was ah American. or She wasn't from the UK.
00:58:19
Speaker
And she said that she loves to wear, she has a her favourite shirt, I think it's red with black dots on it. And she met an English hiker said, oh, you look like a ladybird. And she had never heard that term before either. She's like, do you mean a ladybug? No, ladybird. And obviously the natural conversation progressed to how it was the same thing, but two different ones.
00:58:39
Speaker
So she decided to adopt that persona as her trail name. um And introduced her as ladybird. ah About it's a week later, stayed at a hiker's youth hostel, and she had signed the book. um she She was going the opposite direction that I was, so it was nice to see her entry from a week before, you know, this is Lady Bird, had a wonderful time.
00:59:01
Speaker
But um that is my useless Lady Bird story that I'll share with you. That's so cool. Yeah. wonder. What's the bird is doing now? Yeah, I don't know, but it was quite cool. The Appalachian Trail about 2,200 miles long, and people either walk it south to north, north to south, or the two other things. You can section hike it, you know, do a week here, a week there, all different ways of doing it. Anyway, she was, when I met her, was within 100 miles of completing the entire trail.
00:59:35
Speaker
She'd done sections over years, you know, when she took a week off here, two weeks there. So I can't remember how many years it had taken her, but she was going to finish the entire trail when she reached the Pennsylvania border a few days' time.
00:59:51
Speaker
So that was super cool. And to to meet somebody at that stage of their multi-year journey. She wass all was almost done. So anyway, the odds of Lady Bird listening are minuscule. But if she happens to be, Lady Bird, I hope you are doing well.
01:00:07
Speaker
Yeah. Wow. So there's my little lady bar tidbit for you. So good. But anyway, so at the end of, we don't know what table they're going to decide again. Chandler brings up Kip again. It's like an ex-wife or something, you know? It's exactly what it is.
01:00:24
Speaker
Yeah, it's so funny. But we go from the girl's apartment and will call back to Bamboozled where I didn't remember everything Phoebe said. I was going to ask you your favorite cookie, but I think we're kind of honing in on perhaps the classic chocolate chip cookie with you. But what is your favorite cookie?
01:00:43
Speaker
At the cookie, the cookie store in the mall, what's called? Like American cookie or whatever. Yeah. There's a cookie there that's the double chocolate chip. And it's, but it's like chocolate, like the dough is chocolate.
01:00:58
Speaker
And then it's got, dark chocolate and white chocolate chips. That's the best. and I don't think I've ever had one. Ooh, or my other one, like if we're not talking about like a store type yeah situation, my friend Valerie makes the best best chocolate chip cookies i have ever had in my life.
01:01:21
Speaker
And I don't know what it is that she does that is different, but they are big and they are thick and they are so delicious. And you warm it up just a little bit. Perfection.
01:01:32
Speaker
Is her grandmother this late to louse? um That's a wonderful question. And we will have to have to find out investigate that situation.
01:01:43
Speaker
But I am familiar with Nestle Tolaos. And my cookies never look like that. Right. Valerie does her extra ingredient of love is...
01:01:58
Speaker
something else. All right. So we'll need to make sure we tag Valerie on Facebook when this episode episode goes out. i Yes. We're going to need to do that because yeah Valerie, that's where it's at. And we need to see if we can maybe have the Purple Door podcast sponsored by Valerie's Cookies and get ourselves some cookies.
01:02:17
Speaker
There you go. Yeah. Yeah. she She could come along to our live episode with a little plate of cookies and we'll see if they are indeed the world's best cookies. Yes. Sorry, Valerie. Right. Yeah. Sorry, Valerie. You just got nominated. That's right.
01:02:33
Speaker
I love it. Well, Rachel certainly does the right thing here. She tells Rachel about, sorry, Phoebe does, tells Rachel about Power Low. I think she does it in the right way. Good on Phoebe.
01:02:44
Speaker
and To me, there's no option. You have to tell. like It's not even a question. It's a good honor. And I like the way that they handle it. um Let's see. and then the boys Beautiful.
01:02:58
Speaker
Beautifully done. It really is. and really is It's the first moment for them, isn't it? Where just the two of them and they're they're going through something that could be tricky. And you'll see later, but like it it's very thoughtful the way, like Phoebe obviously has spent a lot of time thinking through how she's going to tell Rachel and then it's awkward and it's terrible and it's awful.
01:03:21
Speaker
And she does it and she does it in such a kind way. Exactly. And as ditzy as Phoebe is sometimes portrayed, We get to get this scene and then in two scenes time where we sort of the finale of of Rachel, of Phoebe telling Rachel, I think has done so well.
01:03:38
Speaker
Yes. And we see this side of Phoebe that I think is, we see quite a lot. I love to see it, which is really a good friend. Like you said, the question, I didn't know the answer to it. Your friends are the most important people to her.
01:03:52
Speaker
The boys are then showing off their new dining room table, this foosball table. um it's ah It's fantastic. I read somewhere that in later scene or later episodes, and I think am i but the foosball characters actually change colour.
01:04:10
Speaker
I thought you might ask me who what the colours of the players were, which is blue and red. Right. I think at some point they changed to black and yellow. i was reading this, but then somebody was on Reddit.
01:04:20
Speaker
Somebody... I don't really know how to navigate Reddit. I just Googled and ended up on it. Somebody said that... that was after the table had broken um and they replaced it or something. So I'll need to look into that.
01:04:34
Speaker
But love that they ended up with this table.
01:04:38
Speaker
Yes. And let's see, and then we bounced right back over to the girls' apartment and I love that they start apologising to each other. And Phoebe, who I guess would, think we'd call her feminist. hope she is, and we all are.
01:04:52
Speaker
But I love the fact that she's like, why are we apologizing to each other? um Yeah, neither one of us did anything wrong. Neither of them did anything. And even more so, again, Phoebe should have told Rachel, but she went above and beyond the way she did it.
01:05:07
Speaker
um She was so much more than just telling her, and that just speaks volumes about Phoebe's character. Neither did anything wrong. Powell was the scumbag here. And I like that they almost got caught up in apologizing and think and they snapped out of it really quickly going, absolutely not.
01:05:26
Speaker
We've done nothing wrong at all. ah So good on Phoebe in particular in that one. um I love it so much. i don't Again, it's a tiny line, but it's the way that Lisa Kudrow does it.
01:05:41
Speaker
where I think Rachel kind of goes, yeah, he's a pig. he's ah he's He's a man pig. And Phoebe's like, yes, that's a good, well done, a man pig. You know, it's like they're kind of getting carried away with the name calling.
01:05:52
Speaker
um So I just love that bit. Monica and Ross beating Chandler and Joey. There's all sorts of decorative changes behind Monica and Ross against that wall. There's this poster.
01:06:05
Speaker
There's like a little table. There's things that I don't know when quite, and a pin board, like wee sort of cork board thing on the wall. I think these things disappear fairly quickly.
01:06:16
Speaker
um And there's even shelves around the fridge that have been there, but they're not there for much longer, I think. Just all sorts of stuff that seems to come and go fairly quickly, especially in the boys' apartments.
01:06:28
Speaker
I don't know if you caught any of those. i Not as specifically as that, but I noticed like that, that's not what it looks like. Right.
01:06:39
Speaker
That's not how we picture it in our heads. And again, somebody out there, I'm going to try and find and get them on the podcast. I assume they changed it a lot in the beginning, just trying to see what works.
01:06:50
Speaker
And then the changes slow down a bit later on, I assume. Yeah. ah um But we'll find out. um I've given Ross some praise.
01:07:01
Speaker
I think so far, I like the i like the the way he was in Carol and Susan's apartment. You know, the acting and not wanting to know. um In the girl's apartment, we see,
01:07:12
Speaker
um may be jumping ahead a little bit, but Rachel throws Paolo's clothes off the balcony. He has to say goodbye and Monica still gives him the lasagna. um which I find quite funny and then the part where I think I can speak for all of us that's what you're going to say yeah well I like that bit I like the way he does that because it's sort of a unity with Rachel and everybody and ah good on him good on him for it's almost like yeah you're not welcoming it anymore and I like that Ross goes out to the balcony you know
01:07:51
Speaker
But it starts getting pushy to me. Like, you know, he should have let Monica go, I think. Yes. Yeah, I'm going back this up. I like the fact that he has that desire to take care of Rachel, but I think it's a little self-serving.
01:08:06
Speaker
He's immediately trying to date her again. I'm backing up now and talking through this. Let Monica go. Take your time. like and then when Rachel says she's swearing off guys, even if you disagree completely, which...
01:08:20
Speaker
A, it's not your place to have an opinion and B, it probably seems like if I was to have an irrelevant opinion, seems like a smart thing to do. But he tries to talk Rachel out of it. This is why I think you're wrong.
01:08:32
Speaker
That's a kind of, it's not creepy. base No, you don't do that. Manipulative. It's manipulative and it's self-serving. He's just thinking about himself at this point. It's an oogie side of Ross that I don't like. Like he can be really selfish I think sometimes and this is one of those times.
01:08:51
Speaker
Yes, absolutely. but You're like, I like that he went out on the balcony. No. Right. Yeah. like Whenever. And Joey and Chandler, they're so silly because he was fine going right on back and playing foosball.
01:09:09
Speaker
Right. They talked him into this. No, I do. I agree. Calm down, guys. yeah calm Calm down. And and yeah if your ultimate goal is to be with Rachel, play the long game.
01:09:23
Speaker
You know, don't burn any bridges too quickly. Let her be with her friends and like, and then just be there when she's ready. you're that You're the guy. But don't, oh, this is why you're wrong. That's not a great way to start things off.
01:09:37
Speaker
Right. Develop a screening process. of You know, just, no, no, no. It's just, oh, Ross, you know, don't do that. At this moment in time, as you have very shrewdly observed, people, we know it's a boy, but Rachel accidentally reveals um that Ross is going to have a boy.
01:09:56
Speaker
um you I do love his reaction. I love the way this is done, where it's sort of the the impactful, life-changing, I'm having a boy. Yes. I'm having a boy. I do love that.
01:10:09
Speaker
Yes. And again, um i'm jumping into the last scene, but cut me off if if I'm missing things. Monica beats the boys again at 2.30 in the morning. It's a shutdown. Shut out.
01:10:21
Speaker
Yes. They're so frustrated with her, but we see what, how crazy competitive she is because this is really the first time that she's, and we know, ah you know, this is an ongoing character ready of hers.
01:10:38
Speaker
Has to be the best. She, she wants to win the trophy, the prize, all of that. It's so funny. oh big I love the way they carry her out, but almost chuck her across the hallway.
01:10:50
Speaker
Um, You to play again? Yeah. But they've got no intention of going to bed. Yes. No, and it made me laugh because she's like, i can put what and I'll only play with my left hand. Right.
01:11:03
Speaker
What season? Yeah. Calm down, Monica. Right. it's It's a brilliant, hilarious trait of hers. um Even to the point later on, I can't remember the scenario.
01:11:16
Speaker
Oh, it's when um they find out Because if Phoebe doesn't like her massages and Chandler's like, if you were there was a trophy for the worst, best massage, you would win it. And that's the only way he's able to talk her down off the edge. ah and Yeah, because she's terrible at it. Yes. Yes.
01:11:33
Speaker
It's so good. Yes. But let's see. I mean, we're kind of at the end of the episode. here' Something I wanted to ask you, though. This one is called The One with the Dozen Lasagnas. To me, the lasagnas actually have relatively little to do with anything.
01:11:48
Speaker
It's almost like the C plot. it's To me, it's Paolo. This is the end of Paolo. And things to do with that. And then the table breaking... To me, there's more meat in those two things than there is in actually the lasagnas.
01:12:02
Speaker
But maybe that's just my take. Or even Ross finding out. Right, Ross finding out. That's a huge thing. To me, the lasagnas were also almost irrelevant to most of this episode, I felt.
01:12:14
Speaker
But. But. But. It's the 12th episode. You have a dozen lasagnas. I didn't catch that. And guess what the air date was?
01:12:27
Speaker
Please tell me something like National Lasagna Day. no No, January 12th. That's even better. I had no idea that it was on the 12th and the 12th. That is brilliant research.
01:12:42
Speaker
And the odd thing is I knew was the 12th episode because another minor celebrations were officially halfway through season one, which actually makes me a little sad. I'm like, I don't want this to rush along too quickly.
01:12:53
Speaker
like Right? It's crazy. Yeah. But yeah's don't worry. We still have 100. hundred Exactly. Plenty plus some bonus episodes to go. So we've got lots and lots of time for the 12th episode.
01:13:08
Speaker
um And I suppose now that I'm talking this through with you, We wouldn't have the table situated. you know We needed those lasagnas like to have the funny scene with Joey and Chandler eating um you know eating on their laps and then giving you one to Paolo.
01:13:24
Speaker
But still, it I just thought it was a funny thing to give it that title. But you're right. you know no And yeah we needed the lasagna.

History of Lasagna

01:13:33
Speaker
We needed a reason for Carol to call Monica. There we go.
01:13:38
Speaker
so maybe... Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it's the unsung hero of the episode. Like, it played a lot of these other stories. Lasagna's always a hero. Always. Well, on the note of lasagna, you know, I tried to do a, this is brand new information segment.
01:13:53
Speaker
And I was like, well, I don't really know what to dig into. So why in the world not dig into lasagnas a little bit? um What's the history of our friend the lasagna? So as we know it today, originated in Naples, Italy, ah during the Middle Ages.
01:14:08
Speaker
I think Joey's family is from Naples. I think they say that later on. But a little tidbit I found out. When the Romans overthrew Greece and occupied the country in 146 BC, they set about adopting local knowledge, culture and food as we know it.
01:14:25
Speaker
um The Greek word is lagannon and that word is still used to describe a flat dough that is sliced into strips. And that's believed to be the origin of the word lasagna.
01:14:36
Speaker
So while the Greeks didn't exactly invent the hearty pasta dish that we know today, there was an original version of the lasagna that was invented in Greece.
01:14:47
Speaker
And it's possibly the world's oldest form of pasta. So we can trace lasagna actually back to being Greek. There are things like phyllo dough and things that are very common in Greek dishes.
01:14:59
Speaker
so and um like baklava is made with those really thin layers so and this i never thought about this why would i but sort of like it looks a little bit like a lasagna um but the oldest written reference directly to lasagna is in a poem that was written in the year 1282 and the last name of the poem of the poet is bolognese which is a brilliant little thing and i'm sure there's a connection there but um Memoriale Bolognese, which I just love.
01:15:32
Speaker
There go. I love it. So there we go. We've again, we've now turned into some sort of a cooking food podcast temporarily, but there you go. But not even rigatoni, huh? Not even, all right. Rigatoni from Rome. Yes.
01:15:49
Speaker
So I would love to hear about your Gunther Central Park.
01:15:56
Speaker
Do you have a favorite character this one? This was a struggle for me, actually. But then i thought

Character Appreciation and Episode Rating

01:16:02
Speaker
when I thought of who it was, I was like, that's the one. That's definitely the one. See, for me, it was clearly Phoebe.
01:16:10
Speaker
Clearly Phoebe. For me. ah Because that... ah This episode, like... She shows what a good friend she is, how thoughtful she is, how kind she is.
01:16:23
Speaker
She's all these things, but she does the right thing. And she's a great friend. And yeah. So if Phoebe, for me, that was the easy, obvious choice.
01:16:37
Speaker
and So I believe Kate was telling me we do this the opposite way around. Kate and watch the episode and don't take any notes. And then we watch it again and I take notes. So after the first watch, where we just sort of, we call it watching it for fun, I didn't know who my so Gunther Central Park would be.
01:16:53
Speaker
But then when I really focused on it, exactly the same as you, this is the episode that we see Phoebe grows a character. She acts brilliantly. she We see her moral character, the way she handles Paolo, the way she handles things with Rachel, shows so much care.
01:17:09
Speaker
So for me, yeah having initially thought, I don't know, it had to be Phoebe. So Phoebe's definitely And I did think we forgot, we made to go back It'd be interesting to track these Because I've got a funny feeling We know who the overall winner in years to be Will be We both have a character that we love But I think I need to keep a tally thing Of who we take every week I think so Because I mean I know who Whenever it's all set Like at the end Like who my favourite character is Absolutely I know
01:17:43
Speaker
Yeah, I think I do too. But it'd be interesting to see who's who comes in second, third. I'll to print something off and we'll have to catch ourselves up before we get too far into this.
01:17:54
Speaker
Right, yes. Yeah, we need to do that. I think that'd be a good thing. two seven Let's go back and tell you. Right. Let's do it. Now, how would you rate this out of 10?
01:18:06
Speaker
forming deliciously hot cups of Central Park coffee. How would you rate this So this one, I would rate a seven. Seven. Yep. Good, solid seven.
01:18:18
Speaker
And the thing is, like, seven, that's a good episode. That's a solid episode. It wasn't so funny, which always, it you know, ups me up. Yes. You know, there were a few parts that were really made me laugh out loud,
01:18:35
Speaker
but I would say a good, strong seven. that's that's i but i considered doing seven and an espresso shot, you know a good seven and a half, which I think could have been.
01:18:47
Speaker
but again, so i looked at I tried to go back and what other ones did I rate a seven? and And to me, it's in line with those ones. A good episode, enjoyed it, don't really have anything bad to say about it.
01:18:58
Speaker
Don't like Powell, but we're getting rid of him. So, yeah you know, there's a good thing there happening. So, yeah, just like you, actually, a solid seven. Before we wrap things up, um I've
