Introduction to the Purple Door Podcast
00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a Friends Rewatch pod. I am one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside my good friend, Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
I am doing awesome, Al. It's a great time of year. It is, because the weather's beautiful, not too hot, not too cold. So it's it's a lovely time to be outdoors.
Live Episode Recording at Cocktail Lounge
00:00:31
Speaker
Yes, it Now, let's see. we're We're kind of getting back in a rhythm here. By the time this episode airs, ah you will have hopefully listened to our live episode that we recorded with, ah what was it, 10 of our closest friends' friends.
00:00:46
Speaker
At a local cocktail lounge. So, I thank you again to Miss Angelines and the Eastside family who hosted us there. We had an absolutely great time with so many people. We've connected um with them now on Instagram and put another podcast on their radar. And it was just a wonderful, wonderful time.
00:01:07
Speaker
So, wanted to give a shout out to them. if sure has. It was, wasn't it? It just smiles on our face thinking about it. And I wanted to also thank... I'm looking forward to doing it again.
Inviting Friends Superfans to Join the Podcast
00:01:19
Speaker
Yeah, oh yeah, we will. The feedback was definitely let's do this again. We'll figure out the best time to it. We're going to work our microphone situation. Microphone situation is crucial for this.
00:01:31
Speaker
Yes, but it was so much fun. We're going to it again. was so much laughter. The trivia was a lot of fun because so many of the questions were on the tip of people's tongues and just couldn't quite get there. The old Mr. Bowling I thought was good to have an aneurysm, but he survived.
Engagement in Facebook Community
00:01:49
Speaker
He did. Good for him. We had a great time.
00:01:53
Speaker
I also wanted to give a quick shout out to Lara, who joined us for our first Superfan episode that we recorded earlier this week. But again, it will already be out by the time you listen to this.
00:02:05
Speaker
So Lara, if you're listening, thank you very much for joining us. We had a fantastic conversation. And any of you other friends, Superfans out there, please feel free to get in touch, just like Lara did, and say, hey, I'd love to record something with you, because we'd love to try and accommodate that as well.
00:02:22
Speaker
We're just a big Purple Door family over here and would love to get more of you involved. But so yeah, why don't we gain go ahead. Sorry. Sorry. No, no, no, you're good. Go ahead.
00:02:33
Speaker
Go ahead. I was just going to say I'm really enjoying the conversations in our Facebook group, the Purple Door Podcast Club. And we're having some fun kind of silly conversations in there.
00:02:47
Speaker
And that's super fun to connect with people that way as well.
Al's DVD Box Set Story
00:02:51
Speaker
Exactly. On my to-do list for this episode was to give another shout out to Jessica Storm, who wrote that lovely message on our Facebook group saying that she looks forward to the podcast every week and listens. So Jessica, that message made Deanne a nice day. So thank you very, very much for posting that. And then we had you you and Deanne had a good conversation about favourite characters. So thank you very much for that Well, let's see. you You had a question for me before we got on air. Why don't we dive into that before we get on to... We saved the question until we were recording.
00:03:27
Speaker
So during our Superfan episode, Al revealed that he has purchased the box set of DVDs. so my question for you, Al...
00:03:42
Speaker
well There we go. DVDs. It came about 10 seconds too late. There we go. Drum roll for DVDs. So my question is this for this specific episode, did you watch the DVD version or did you watch the streaming version?
00:03:57
Speaker
So we watched the streaming version. And then I think what I'm going to try and do is then watch the DVD version after we've recorded.
Understanding DVD Regions
00:04:06
Speaker
So we can keep seeing these little differences.
00:04:09
Speaker
Because I think the differences are kind of fun. And it will speak to of a wider variety of listeners, because I'm sure we have some who are watching it on both channels. both different ways. And it also dawned on me I didn't have a DVD player.
00:04:22
Speaker
So that that has been purchased. It could be. It's been purchased. It's sitting in the bedroom and now I need to, and on my to-do list today, to get that.
00:04:34
Speaker
But I'm quite excited because for the first time in years, I've got a multi-region player.
Chandler's Job Offer and Trivia Game
00:04:40
Speaker
I had one years ago and that allows me to play DVDs from back in the UK because they they're a different format. I'm sorry.
00:04:48
Speaker
and So is four of them. Yes, I'll back up. Rewinding. So it's called a multi-region player. Region. Multi-region? There's four, of I think, five different DVD regions in the world.
00:05:04
Speaker
There's like North America, most of Europe, Australia, Asia, something else. Sort of basically the continent. And DVDs are programmed in a different way in each continent.
00:05:15
Speaker
So if I brought a DVD over from Scotland to here, it wouldn't play in a normal DVD player. What? Yeah, true true story. It's just the way they're formed.
00:05:27
Speaker
Yeah, I think it goes back, really, I'm assuming sort of pre-streaming days, when stuff was really released here and in the UK and stuff at different times. Like the USA used to get movies several months before they were available in the UK.
00:05:43
Speaker
So my assumption is it's something to do with DVDs are released in the US, but so they couldn't just be all shipped over to the UK. Yeah. before it was ready to be released.
00:05:53
Speaker
So I remember getting a multi-region player. My dad bought it for me a long time ago. when I first moved over here. And it was $200 and something dollars at the time. It was expensive, which would be the best part of $300 now.
00:06:09
Speaker
Went on to Amazon, $27 for a multi-region player. like The price has plummeted. So yeah the one I had broke several years ago So I'm quite excited to not only watch Friends, but fire up some of my old DVDs as well from back home.
00:06:25
Speaker
Weird. Okay, so I just have a couple more questions about this. I wonder if I, I have no idea. Maybe this is just common knowledge for all people, but this is not common knowledge in mine. So I have more questions.
00:06:43
Speaker
Okay, so they look the same though, right? eight They look exactly the same, same shape, size, yes. Okay. So, okay, I got so
Chandler's Career Struggles
00:06:54
Speaker
excited because at the dollars general, like, I don't know, probably 15 or 20 years ago, I found a DVD and I was so excited because it was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
00:07:08
Speaker
And, you know, it was the Philosopher's Stone over in the UK and over there. Then they changed it over here because they were like, you know, philosophers not really widely. It's not sort of general knowledge and that would not seem.
00:07:26
Speaker
It's just used differently. Right. right And so I was so excited. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is so fancy. It must be from overseas. But it played fine on my DVD player 20 something years ago. Do you see how I've gone from 15 to 20 to 20 seconds I mean it'll just be a mystery how old I am but um so now I'm curious like what where would that have come from and do I have a multi did I own a multi-region DVD player and didn't even know is interesting happening here
00:08:04
Speaker
Right, we're going to have to dig into this one a little bit because it does remind, I've got another tangent for You can tell that you and I have not recorded like this in at least a few weeks because we've got lot of catching up to do.
00:08:16
Speaker
um This is not the same at all. But one time I went home, I went to Edinburgh, um which is where Harry Potter was written, where J.K. Rowling lived at the time. And I forget the name of the street, but it's a really lovely street in Edinburgh County.
00:08:32
Speaker
It's quite a steep hill and curves around a corner. And it's the real life street that inspired Diagon Alley. but Just the way it looks, it's a beautiful, old historical street.
00:08:43
Speaker
And anyway, naturally, there's a little Harry Potter shop on the street. So I thought, you know, for the kids, I'll grab a couple of, what are the frogs called? um ah Yeah, chocolate frogs.
00:08:54
Speaker
The chocolate frogs. I'll get a couple of those for the kids sort of thing. Because then I can say I got them on the real life Diagon Alley. But they cost what of what you know a fair amount.
00:09:06
Speaker
And then I looked at them. Made and manufactured in Irving, Texas. Ah! Oh!
00:09:15
Speaker
do i have Which, for listeners, is about 20 miles down the road, promise. So it was like, this is, the they've got all, that they're coming back home with me, I suppose.
00:09:28
Speaker
But what a funny, funny thing. But we'll have to look into your Philosopher's Stone DVD that plays here and how that ended up happening. Yeah, but because up yeah that's wild.
Monica's Culinary Opportunity
00:09:40
Speaker
wild ah yeah um mal There go. DVD. Yes, I'll let you know how all that goes. This has turned into You and I's Catching Up podcast, which I love immensely.
00:09:55
Speaker
But I suppose we should dive into the episode, shouldn't we? The one with the stoned guy. I've been looking forward to this one for a few weeks. But before we get too deep into it, we do, of course, have to play a round of bamboozled and fire some questions each other's way. Why don't you start off with a question, Dee?
00:10:16
Speaker
Well, you have more questions than me, so I would like to turn it back to you. Okay, I'm quite proud of my first question. So we'll see. It's it's it's a little ah with a little twist on what we normally do here.
00:10:31
Speaker
So on Chandler's cubicle walls, we see seven things hanging. Can you name three of them? Dang. my You've got the question. Can you name five things that were in Chandler's cubicle? Okay. And I was just asking you for things. I was not specific about hanging on the wall.
00:10:51
Speaker
But I will tell you there are two no smoking signs. Indeed, I have those. There is a calendar. There is a dartboard. There's yeah like a cork board that has it looks like receipts and things like that on it.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Hang on.
00:11:12
Speaker
Yeah, I've got all those. I was going to say, that's all the things I have that are on on the wall. and it So I saw two more, but one of them was is a piece of paper. I couldn't tell what was on it.
00:11:25
Speaker
It was turned to the side. And then quite low down, there was a fake spider web with a little spider hanging on it, you know which which goes along with his pranks he was pulling, I'm sure. Yes, yes.
00:11:39
Speaker
Well, and then, yeah. when Okay, i'm goingnna I'm going to change my question number two just a little bit. All
Ross's Date with Celia
00:11:47
Speaker
right. yet All right.
00:11:49
Speaker
So what are the orders at the beginning of the episode? What does Joey order, Ross order, and Monica order? And we assume that Rachel got these orders right because they didn't trade anything.
00:12:03
Speaker
You know what? I'm going to admit I have no idea because... When I was making notes for this, the only thing, I caught only one thing from the introduction and that was the pencil in the coffee.
00:12:15
Speaker
And I remember thinking, well pencil was meant to be a cinnamon stick. Yeah. Right. yeah So I know, I guess I get maybe one out three, some kind of cinnamon, cinnamon, something.
00:12:27
Speaker
Yeah. It was cider. Oh, just like, there you go. i And then Joey got black coffee and Ross got a cappuccino. I did not catch either of those.
00:12:37
Speaker
Yes. All right. What was the job title of the promotion Chandler was offered?
00:12:45
Speaker
What was Chandler's promotion? My question number thirty three. Question three. God bless it. All right. But yes, but it was data processing supervisor.
00:12:56
Speaker
He was the supervisor. That's right. Okay. Can you name two things that were on Chandler's death?
Joey's Comedic Dirty Talk Practice
00:13:08
Speaker
I know one and I'm going to kind of cheat with the other. So one is the rubber chicken. Right. And the other, I don't remember, but I know he has a computer. So i'm going to say a computer.
00:13:19
Speaker
Ah, yes. Because that's kind of cheating though, I feel. but because No, that's okay. But let me ask you this. Did you notice the baseball hat in his cubicle?
00:13:31
Speaker
No, I did not. Which interesting because didn't write that down because I was like, I feel like for sure I'll say something about it because he's already said something twice about it. Right. Yeah, we've discussed baseball couple times. So what baseball cap do you think had his desk?
00:13:50
Speaker
on I think, I mean, assuming it's in New York team, we see the Mets more than the Yankees. I'm going to go with the Mets.
00:13:58
Speaker
No. The Toronto Blue Jays.
00:14:03
Speaker
Aha, Steve's favorite team, who who was a guest on our first. that He loves the Blue the blue Jays. Oh, that's awesome. So I'm he's a little shout out to Steve. Now, do you know, I do know why that cap would be there.
00:14:17
Speaker
Yes, because it's Matthew Perry. Yeah, grew up in Ottawa, and that's the nearest team, the only baseball team, I think, in Canada, right? From Canada. There was the Monterey.
00:14:30
Speaker
No, the Montreal Canadiens. What are they? Are they ice hockey? That's, yeah, that's hockey. They're hockey. All right. Yes. Yeah.
Chandler Accepts the Job Offer
00:14:36
Speaker
I thought the Toronto, yes. or Steve loves it, but yeah, that's a nice little tip of the baseball hat to Matthew Perry's.
00:14:43
Speaker
Um, he was born in New York state. If I recall, then moved to Canada. So he's adopted hometown of Ottawa, even though it's Toronto, a little tip of the hat.
00:14:57
Speaker
Um, div that it's ah That's a great piece of trivia. I like that one. All right, so your question next.
00:15:06
Speaker
What? I did your question, didn't I? Oh, that's right, i about the cap. Sorry about the cap. Yes. but Yeah, and his cubicle. I don't know. That was a weird question. Sorry. No, you're fine. Absolutely fine. but Again, we're getting back in our rhythm.
00:15:20
Speaker
All right. I have to ask you one that, again, we're two for two, but we might be three for three with you having this question. What does weenus stand for?
00:15:31
Speaker
Wow. No, I don't. No? I have weenus written down a bunch of times in my notes. Right. Right. Yeah. and No, I don't know.
00:15:46
Speaker
That would be weekly estimated net usage systems. Weenus. I didn't even spell it correctly in my nose. Right. So i was I'm sitting here, I'm looking at it. I spelled it W-E-E-N-I-S.
00:16:03
Speaker
Right. And so I'm like, What could that stand for? Yeah. yeah he He says it. with The first time he says it, he tells that the gang on the couch what it is. Okay.
00:16:17
Speaker
All right. So whenever um
00:16:23
Speaker
Monica comes in after she's talked with Steve and she's like, I love my life. I love my life. I love my life. Yes. And then Phoebe's thinking and then she like guesses a movie that she thinks that Monica's acting out.
00:16:39
Speaker
Yes. What movie is it? I have made a note about this. That would be Brian's song because this time yesterday, I didn't know that was a movie. I didn't know what that reference was. Didn't know anything about
Steve's Chaotic Dinner with Monica
00:16:51
Speaker
I wondered. I wondered because whenever I wrote that down, I was like, I wonder if if Al would even know what b Brian's song was. No, I had no idea. Random guess on her part for some... Well, there you go.
00:17:06
Speaker
There we go. Good job, Al. We got Brian's on. All right. I don't love that... quite Oh, this is I like this one. So who plays Celia, the bug lady, and what show is she most most famous for?
00:17:20
Speaker
Okay. Is it... Is it... is is um ah What is her name on The Office? There you go, she's on The Office. Jan.
00:17:33
Speaker
Jan on The Office. Okay. I was looking at her. She looks so young and different. And I was like, and Joseph didn't watch this episode with me.
00:17:44
Speaker
And I was thinking, I was hoping he was going to watch it with me whenever I watched it the second time. Because I was like, he'll recognize her and be able to tell me. But then that fell out of my head and I forgot to look it up.
00:17:55
Speaker
So yes, it was Jan from the office. Jan, Melora Harden, who was Jan in the office. And it took me, as yeah I looked at him, I didn't instantly recognize him.
00:18:06
Speaker
um Yeah. Yeah. So that's her. That's crazy. Yeah. yeah All right. What is Monica having Joey try whenever she's trying out her recipes and stuff?
00:18:21
Speaker
It's whipped fish. I'm just glad I'm keeping it down. It'd be salmon moose. Right, is it salmon moose? Yeah, it sounds horrible. yeah Might be good. I'm with Joey. Whipped fish.
00:18:34
Speaker
yeah this I don't know why I love the answer to this so much, but I do. Where does Chandler say he waited tables?
00:18:46
Speaker
ham Where does Chandler say he waited tables? Okay, when did he say this? I don't even... I'll give you a bit of context. yeahs whenever They're talking about their dreams, right?
00:18:59
Speaker
No, it is when um Monica has hired the other waitress and she says, because she's professional, then Rachel says, i that's right, I'm maintaining my amateur waitress status.
00:19:14
Speaker
So i know that she remains eligible for the Olympics. And then Chandler comes in with the next line and says, yeah, I waited tables, dot, dot, dot.
00:19:27
Speaker
I don't know. I believe he said, I don't mean to brag, but I waited tables at innsbru in Innsbruck in 76, which was the Winter Olympics. Oh.
00:19:39
Speaker
Okay. I didn't even get that. I was all focused whenever he said that. I'm like, You weren't even old enough to be waiting tables in 76. Okay. yeah That was just a reference to a winter Olympics. I think it was a winter Olympics. and It would be Innsbruck in Austria. It would be winter Olympics.
00:19:58
Speaker
Wow. Yeah, that was that. Okay. What do you have for me? what What's Chandler's new assistant's name? Nina.
00:20:13
Speaker
Nina. No, no, no, it's not Nina. Nina's the lady. Not the lady. It's not Nina. It is Helen. Helen.
00:20:23
Speaker
Helen. Can you come in here, please? Thank you. That's right. Nina's from some... Yes. Yes, Nina. Nina's next... I think in maybe next week's episode might be Nina. It's coming up soon anyway.
00:20:36
Speaker
um Okay. Let's see. Okay. What does Phoebe see out of Chandler's new office window? A guy
Chandler's New Boss Role
00:20:45
Speaker
peeing. A guy peeing. Yes.
00:20:48
Speaker
All right. Do you have one more for me at least? I have one more. Okay. All right. how did, or what happened to Steve?
00:21:00
Speaker
What ended the whole interview dinner thing? What happened to Steve?
00:21:11
Speaker
So I'm sort of unpacking the whole the whole thing that happened. he yeah He spilled the gummy bears in the in some kind of liquid through the Cheerios, the Sugar Rolls in to rescue them.
00:21:26
Speaker
Was that the last thing? Well, no. the They're sitting in the coffee house as she's talking about it. Yes.
00:21:38
Speaker
but i don't remember. gone. sitting weird with Ross yet again on the couch. And, um, yeah. And they're sitting there and then she is like, and then I had to tell him, don't eat that. That's a magnet, but he didn't listen. And that's how he ended up at the right room.
00:21:57
Speaker
And then they left.
00:22:02
Speaker
I wonder if that's a delete... Is that deleted? c i may Either I missed it or it's on the DVDs. Let me tell you. Hang on. on yeah I could well have missed it. you know but That just doesn't ring a bell.
00:22:17
Speaker
I will check after this episode.
Phoebe's Revenge and Listener Mail Discussion
00:22:23
Speaker
Let's see. Deanne's having a quick look at that website that shows the DVD. Oh my gosh! Yes, I'm so sorry. That is blue. Oh, So I told him I'm sorry, that's just how I feel. And he told me I harshed his buzz.
00:22:37
Speaker
And then he said, or then I said, don't eat that. That's a kitchen magnet. And then he didn't listen. So we left him in the emergency room. Yep. That's fantastic. i look forward to breaking open this box of DVDs and watching it. That's one of the funniest parts. And he told me I harshed his buzz.
00:22:58
Speaker
No, that was not there. That's fantastic. I love it. yeah Well, I've got one more for you. Okay. A similar theme to the first question. Phoebe uses six terms for smoking marijuana.
00:23:12
Speaker
Can you three of those words? I know ganja was one. Yep. ah A doobie. doobie, yep.
00:23:25
Speaker
A joint. You have three. Yes. For bonus points, do you know the other three? No. Six? No. she says them quite quickly.
00:23:36
Speaker
She had blazed up a doobie, smoked a joint, lit a bone, weed, hemp, ganja. She says them quite quickly. Yes. Very sort of Phoebe because she just knows she knows all the terminology. So, yes.
00:23:51
Speaker
Good stuff. Well, let's get stuck into this episode. It's a fun one. um It starts off with Rachel handing out the drinks. I didn't catch the order of the drinks, but you did. yeah But Monica's has the pencil in it.
00:24:05
Speaker
ah Yes, but she's doing better with getting everybody's orders right. Indeed. It wasn't long ago she had them all wrong. so she's But then she puts that hairy cinnamon stick in the drink.
00:24:18
Speaker
Yeah, that's that's terrible. That's bad waitressing, I think. Wouldn't get you into the Olympics, I don't think. Uh-uh, uh-uh. But especially to Monica, of all the people.
00:24:30
Speaker
Right, somebody who you know is not going to tolerate that at all. Joey might. write Joey might be all right with it. And I think Ross, just being Ross, who is always going to have forgiveness for Rachel, you know?
00:24:44
Speaker
Indeed. he would but He would drink the fat for Rachel, as we know. yeah Later on. That is true.
00:24:54
Speaker
Well, it's a pretty quick opening scene and we go straight over to Chandler's office where we see him sort of typing in his cubicle. He looks like he's just hitting the keys randomly. um It sort of reminds me of old school games where you'd have to do two keys really, really fast, like to make a character ah run. It just reminded me of that.
00:25:15
Speaker
yeah I forget the lady's name who has who comes and talks to him. So I wrote down Mrs. Dreadlock, but I don't know if that's right or not. is That's what it sounded like.
00:25:27
Speaker
Yeah, and she says that she he needs to go and see Mr. Is it Kostolic? The boss? Yeah. Kostolic, perhaps. Kostolic. Oh, Miss Kedlock, not Dreadlock. Ah, close.
00:25:42
Speaker
Close enough. I know, so we're off. Like said, we're getting back in our rhythm after a few weeks. The only thing that really struck me about this scene that I thought was odd was, and it was more of an editing thing rather than anything in the show, was they started playing the music between this scene and the next scene and Chandler talks over it, which is nothing and nobody cares. But i just thought that wast that doesn't usually happen.
00:26:08
Speaker
Whenever it went from this scene to the next scene, Yet to Central Park, you know, they play the transition music, but it started while Chandler was still talking.
00:26:19
Speaker
Okay, you know why? No, I don't. I can tell you why. Because they cut out part of it. So after she goes and starts walking off, he stands up in his chair and he's talking to her.
00:26:35
Speaker
And then as he's walking by, he starts like dancing on the chair And talking about how, you know, we shouldn't have these shenanigans in the office environment.
00:26:46
Speaker
And so that's why, because instead of just shortening the music, they kept that the same length. They just cut out the part where he's standing in his chair.
00:26:57
Speaker
in talking its so park I'm to need you to do... A favour for me. This is... Sorry, listeners. You will need to text Kate this information afterwards if I forget because we were just watching another random episode the other day. And you know that the introduction is all the... So many bits and pieces from the show.
00:27:17
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And in one of the introductions, there's Chandler dancing like on a chair in a cubicle. And we we were both like, this isn't in any episode. This is weird that they have this tiny clip in the introduction when it's not in any episode.
00:27:32
Speaker
Must have been from an an outtake or something, we guess. But she brought it up because she saw it and she was like, that's really, really weird. But that is where it must be from. Yeah, that's a that yeah exactly it.
00:27:46
Speaker
yeah That's it. So that's two. Yeah, that's you've solved the mystery of the introduction and of the the music being a little off on the stream. So we do we go from there. Let's see.
00:28:00
Speaker
Back to Central Park. Phoebe comes in. She already knows Chandler's news and she's going to come up with a big plan. um yeah She wants them to do something. She's so excited about it. right ah Right. She's so happy.
00:28:13
Speaker
But then Chandler comes in too quickly. and explains that he was offered this big promotion, so he quit. And he wasn't going to do that. So I did want to ask you, is there a job that you are really glad you have quit that you could talk about on air?
00:28:31
Speaker
I thought that I was really... Oh, yeah. Um...
00:28:40
Speaker
You know, okay. So whenever I was in college, one of my jobs that I worked, Oh, you know, I've quit a couple that I'm not sad that I don't work anymore.
00:28:52
Speaker
But whenever I was in college, I worked at Foley's, which was a department store. And I feel like I've talked about working at Foley's before, but it was a department store, uh, like Macy's yeah because Macy's yeah ended up buying Foley's and, um,
00:29:08
Speaker
and But i I was glad whenever i quit that job. Did you ever see Office Space? You know that movie? I wear love Office Space.
00:29:19
Speaker
I love that movie too. Brilliant movie. Yeah. Yes. And the part where he talks about how he has eight bosses and so every time he screws up he gets to hear it eight times.
00:29:32
Speaker
Yes. Okay. Okay. And I always felt like that at Foley's. And it wasn't that I, like, screwed up a lot or anything. But we would have, like, five managers come through every evening, you know, like, oh, hey, before we close tonight, you need to make sure that all the stuff on the table is straight, you know, and everything's straight already. and But, like, you would have multiple people coming through. And it's like, dude, like, we just โ you could just โ
00:30:03
Speaker
Leave a little note. Right. We don't need to do that. one But that drove me crazy. And I loved that job. I loved all the people you talked to. And I liked organizing and straightening all the things.
00:30:16
Speaker
but um But yeah, I wasn't sad whenever it was time to move on to children's career. Time to move on. Yeah. Yeah. Good. yeah Good for you. yeah Well, Chandler's not upset either that he's quitting because this isn't what he wants to do with the rest of his life.
00:30:32
Speaker
And Phoebe has a great idea for him. He should become a chef.
00:30:39
Speaker
i thought Now, I do like the idea of an all-toast restaurant. um Yes. it It's i mean the same but different. it It reminds me of 20 years into the future in the office where Michael Scott is going to have ah a cereal bar or a cereal restaurant. I think that comes up at some point.
00:30:58
Speaker
All these different kinds of cereal, which I still think if we stuck one of those on the Denton Square, you pay $8 for a bowl and you can just have all the milk and different cereals you want.
00:31:09
Speaker
I think that would be a hit. Okay. Okay. So where I grew up in the colony, um before it you know became gigantic and a destination, it was not.
00:31:24
Speaker
and We were very small. And there was, it was called the Breakfast Bar. Really? And it was a cereal bar. Or maybe it was called the Cereal Bar. I don't know. was called one or the other.
00:31:37
Speaker
That place only stayed in business. I don't even know that they made it through the first year. But it was so um economically not viable.
00:31:48
Speaker
Like they they could not make money because I don't know why, but but just it just didn't work. It did not make enough money. Right. That's a shame because I think the concept is fun. but It's probably one of those things you'd go.
00:32:03
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. You'd maybe go once and that would be it, I suppose. Yeah. so Now, have you seen the ramen places? Oh, sorry. the rock your You're cutting it now slightly and it's just ever so far I am. So we're crossing over slightly.
00:32:21
Speaker
Okay, hang on. I wonder if something's up with our internet. um But have you seen the ramen places? Seen them but never been. Okay.
00:32:32
Speaker
See, I haven't ever been either. no but But I've seen the one where you like go in and then up on the whatever. I'm going to switch my internet real quick.
00:32:44
Speaker
I think Deanna's going to try to reconnect. She's a just seeing what happens here. Let's see. She's switched on over and Deanna's back. I am back.
00:32:56
Speaker
And now hopefully there won't be cutting in and out. yeah The picture certainly looks much better on our screen. Much clearer. Okay. Well, I'm so sorry that that was me. i apologize. No, quite all right.
00:33:08
Speaker
but i was all technically like ready to go with New headphones. I had everything set up. I didn't have to ask my kids for help. I was on it.
00:33:20
Speaker
We've still got this. Don't worry. well yeah so Phoebe has her new massage client, this Steve, and he's opening an eclectic restaurant. and yeah Thankfully, Phoebe kind of finally gets there and offers Monica to connect them together, I suppose.
00:33:36
Speaker
um yeah Chandler just can't see himself in a big white hat. Just can't do it. But the timing in that scene cracked me up. but never I know, but Chandler's the one who needs the job right now.
00:33:52
Speaker
right And then at the very end, she's like, there's like this pause. And it's just like, Oh, Monica. Right. Brilliantly done. That literal comedic timing, isn't it?
00:34:03
Speaker
just Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Let's see. So she she said goes goes there. We go over to the girl's apartment. Chandler comes in asking if we can see his nipples through his shirt.
00:34:15
Speaker
Let's see. And he's made an appointment with the career counselor. did write the guy's name. A go-go. A go-go. He added that himself. do at robert Dr. Robert Pillman, I believe, was his name. And he's going to figure out what he wants to do with his life.
00:34:31
Speaker
I do love that sort line where it's like, you guys know what you want to do. You guys in the living room know what you want to do because Rachel has no idea. I did love, I like that. Well, and then I thought it does line that made me really laugh in that scene too was another channeler's like, I don't have a dream.
00:34:51
Speaker
And then Ross, the lesser known, I don't have a dream. Don't have a dream speech. Yeah, that's a good one. that was funny.
00:35:02
Speaker
yeah you every Well, Monica's vch very excited about making this dinner for Steve. And you could just tell that, you know, the juices are flowing, the the shit what she's going to make, what she's going to do.
00:35:15
Speaker
And that Ross announces he's going to go out with the bug lady. Rachel's little impression is very childish, but very funny. I love the noise she makes. they kind of yeah I love you, Ross.
00:35:25
Speaker
and but I don't know why, but very funny. like Very well done. And there's someone one of her, this is Joey. suggest Tony's because you can eat a 32-ounce steak. He's like, okay, any suggestions if you're not dating a puma?
00:35:42
Speaker
Like, it's so funny. I'm so glad you brought that up because I was going to ask you, and this is quite a narrow question for our listener base, only if you've really been to Texas, I suppose.
00:35:54
Speaker
Have you been to the Big Texan, i think it's called an Amarillo, with that big steak? Yes. I have. I have not done the steak challenge, though.
00:36:05
Speaker
However, I have sat and watched them do it up on the stage. Interesting. we've been once as well, but we didn't see any. There was yeah nothing to see at the time we went in.
00:36:18
Speaker
See, my little brother, whenever I was growing up, my brother was always like, oh, yeah, I could do that. I could that. You know, but ah I never tried because it was.
00:36:30
Speaker
It's a very expensive dinner, but you have to complete it. And um yeah, but we went and we saw it was, ah I'm trying to think the last time that we went and actually saw somebody up on the stage doing it, he didn't complete it.
00:36:47
Speaker
But we sure did sit there the whole hour staring at him. I bet you did. I kind of wonder if it's like, um you know, the Nathan's hot dog thing. thing that it's kind of disgusting you know the the hot dog eating contest yeah do the fourth of july that they're always really small people who win like thin slight people like that joey chestnut is that the famous guy who wins it all the time but i've seen the the the most the lady who's won it a past the past couple of years a tiny thing it generally this it's smaller people who seem to have this ability to
00:37:21
Speaker
When push comes to shove, eat a lot of food. yeah So I don't know what the science is there. i'm I'm curious because I would love to have whatever their metabolism is.
00:37:32
Speaker
would love that. To be able to do that. Now, my brother, though, has been in a hot dog eating contest before. And he might have been in a pie eating contest, but I'm not 100% Just because he thinks that's hilarious. Good for him.
00:37:49
Speaker
Good for him. I like it. He's got a pretty good competitive streak as well. Right. It runs through your DNA, I think. It just might. It just might. I love it.
00:38:01
Speaker
Well, we do go straight from talking about the bug lady to seeing the bug lady. um yeah was Is it Celia? I forget her name. Celia. Yeah. Marcel's clinging onto her hair and Under her braid.
00:38:16
Speaker
Yes. And that's it. That's the whole scene. Right. That's all we see there. It's ah it's quite a funny quick cut before we go back to the girls' apartment again where Monica's made this this salmon mousse.
00:38:31
Speaker
You know, it's just, I haven't tried it. I would try it. Got to give it a shot. It sounds terrible. before Chandler enters another slightly disheveled Chandler moment with tie halfway undone, his shirt's untucked.
00:38:45
Speaker
And you can see his nipples through his shirt. You can indeed. You can indeed. But he was perfectly matched for the job he had. And that's what i was going to ask you. Have you always wanted to be a teacher or did that in education?
00:38:59
Speaker
ye Yeah. i did ah with I decided whenever I was in kindergarten to My kindergarten teacher was Miss Morrison and I was scared on the very first day of kindergarten.
00:39:11
Speaker
She pulled out a blue triangle from behind my ear. She asked me if I knew what that was. And I was like, oh my God, my teacher is magic.
00:39:21
Speaker
She's magic. And then, oh, she was amazing. And I was like, am going to be a teacher. And then I found out my parents, they didn't have kindergarten.
00:39:33
Speaker
Whenever um they were in school, they went straight to first grade. And so I was like, I am so sad for you. Like, I loved kindergarten so much. I told my parents, I was, whenever I grew up, I was to become a kindergarten teacher for people their age. So they could have kindergarten.
00:39:51
Speaker
That's a great idea. Right. The mind of a five-year-old. Right. and And then as I went through school, like it I changed my mind.
00:40:02
Speaker
Like I wanted to teach kindergarten until I got to seventh grade. And then seventh grade, i decided I was going to teach a middle school English. And I had Miss Madison and she was amazing.
00:40:13
Speaker
And then um in high school, I took a creative writing class. And I was like, I'm going to teach creative writing. So I have taught everything that I've ever wanted to teach with the exception of creative writing.
00:40:26
Speaker
But I've taught kindergarten for a number of years. I taught i taught writing. for a number of years, but not creative writing. But yep, I always wanted to be in education.
00:40:37
Speaker
And then you know random things on the side, like a lawyer. you right ah lawyer on the side. Yeah, an astronaut, I'm sure. right I did want to be a pilot for a while.
00:40:50
Speaker
And um I still haven't written that off yet. No, there's plenty of time. You've got this. Yeah. What about you, Al? So, ah yeah, I've always wanted to be a teacher.
00:41:02
Speaker
um A bit like you have had a couple of other sort of ideas that have gone off to the site. I've always wanted to work in the the tourism business. I wanted to be a travel writer. But you know the these are ideas that you know come and go.
00:41:16
Speaker
But when I first went to college, I studied tourism and marketing um because I really wanted to work in the tourism industry. And I still love that. I still travel a lot and do lots of things in that industry.
00:41:28
Speaker
um So that's going to end up being more of ah a passion project, a side gig, if you will. um I'm doing a few things with that um and got some ideas for the future.
00:41:42
Speaker
of how to combine my love for the outdoors and traveling places and things with education that hopefully will come together in the next year or two. so But yeah, always wanted to teach.
00:41:53
Speaker
And then, mean you probably know the story, but went back to college at age 27 and basically said, I want to be a teacher. Here's the qualifications I have. What do I need to do?
00:42:04
Speaker
And they helped make it happen. so Yeah. Yeah. Never too late. never I do remember that. I do remember that. Yeah, that's awesome. I was a very upset because you had gotten a job and I was trying to get you to come over and sub at Cross Oak.
00:42:22
Speaker
but That's right. subbed for just a minute before you got hired. And I was like, the kids loved you. And like the parents that i were in my class, they loved you. And I was like, okay, yeah, I'll get Mr. Green. I'll see if he'll come back. And you're like, have a job.
00:42:38
Speaker
Yeah, sorry about that. Yeah, boo, free That's okay, I haven't held a grudge or anything. That was only, what, 13 years ago? Yeah, just about. Clearly not. yes Well, I'm glad we both ended up where we wanted to be. That's a good thing.
00:42:53
Speaker
Well, okay. So, and you said something about ah being a travel writer. I wanted to be a movie critic. Like, that was something I was like, I could always do that on the side.
00:43:06
Speaker
Right. And so I kind of feel like we're kind of doing that with a TV show. We're doing this. This is a dream come true, Al. Look at what we're doing here. I love it.
00:43:18
Speaker
This is good. I've never had an amuse-bouche. I don't know about you. I've never heard that term before, but Monica presents them. It is pretty amusing. I do love that line.
00:43:29
Speaker
it is It's a very channel line. But then Wendy calls and that this is where it hurts Rachel's feelings about needing a professional waitress. Yes. So it's ah ah i I can't decide if Monica's right here to get a professional.
00:43:46
Speaker
And I think there's something about separating friends and business too. Or should she have gone to Rachel first of all? Not quite sure. She should have gone to Rachel first.
00:43:57
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Yeah. For one night. Right. Yeah. I think so. Something like that. yeah and Yeah, I think so.
00:44:09
Speaker
We go back over to Ross's apartment and again a very quick scene where things are getting hot and heavy with Celia, right? And Ross panics. He panics. A critical juncture of the relationship and blurts out the word vulva and it's all over.
00:44:26
Speaker
It's all over. But I'm so thankful that he does because it brings us to the boy's apartment. And with the exception of possibly the end with Steve, this is, for me, the funniest scene the show where he's talking, where where him and Joey are talking dirty to each other. Yeah, and Chandler walks out.
00:44:46
Speaker
Okay, did you notice, did you notice Chandler, or not Chandler's, but Ross and Joey's outfits?
00:44:55
Speaker
No, but that's interesting because I tried to look at Chandler's shirt and figured out what the design was. Okay. I spent some time on that too. And then the second time that I watched it, I was like, whoa, that's weird. So like I wrote a little note, but you know how back in the nineties, you know, you have your button up shirt, like buttoned up and they have your shirt underneath.
00:45:18
Speaker
Their color schemes are exactly the same. It's like green and this like maroonish color. And, um, Like Joey's outer shirt is maroonish with like green striped shirt underneath.
00:45:32
Speaker
And then Ross's shirt, ah his outside is green with the maroonish shirt underneath. and but' I know. I was like, that that's weird because it's a strange mixing of colors.
00:45:46
Speaker
But then it's the same mixing. It's the same. They're complimenting each other. That is interesting. I just, i love Chandler. A very intimate moment for those. Yes. The first of a couple. They have this and then the when they fall asleep together later on in the series.
00:46:03
Speaker
Yes. But again, to me, this is Joey being a great friend. He's like, yeah i'm I'm here to help you out. Chandler in the background and you know I can't remember the exact line, but you know I always hoped you two guys would get together or something. Yes. ah Very well done. Well, it made me laugh because he's like trembling. And then he hits the the hockey stick.
00:46:30
Speaker
Yes. And then they both turn around. and he's like, go on, ah he's nowhere whatever you or whatever he says. was just like, that's terrible. That's right. because and or whatever Yeah, absolutely.
00:46:43
Speaker
But then his boss calls and basically offers Chandler the world, it seems, you know, bonuses on top of bonuses and salary increases and he just he he caves He caves. I don't think I can blame him. there There comes a point where he knows what he's doing. I think's and and don't get the impression it's a very taxing job that he's been doing.
00:47:06
Speaker
And if it's a lot more money, then why not? Why not just do it? He just kind of blows it off. Beyond Monday. But he certainly gets the brand new fancy office that he takes Phoebe to.
00:47:19
Speaker
Yes. See, and that was so sweet to me. Right. but Like, Phoebe, good for Phoebe. yeah obviously, making an effort to go and see his new office, and he calls Helen in, and yeah the way she walks in.
00:47:37
Speaker
That'll all. Last time, I swear. I think I would probably have to do the same thing, though. I think I'd get a little excited with that button. Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:49
Speaker
But let's see, we we go back over and we're kind of in the girl's apartment now for most of the the rest of the episode. And Wendy bails on Monica. She can't do it. So Rachel has plans to walk around. But Monica, I think she brings up a fair point. I agree with you, I think, that she should have asked Rachel first.
00:48:08
Speaker
But also Monica did put a roof over Rachel's head and really did look after her in the beginning. So I think Rachel should have forgiven her and they should move past this.
00:48:19
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Like, I don't think she'll stay up on it, like stay angry. Right. But I don't know. i don't know, Al. I don't know if I agree with that.
00:48:29
Speaker
Yes. Okay. That is true that Monica put a roof over her head and helped her whenever Rachel was in need, that Monica, you know, helped her.
00:48:40
Speaker
But, like, I don't know that you get to keep, like, bringing that up. That's true. well I did do this for you. So I need you to do this for me. Like that doesn't seem.
00:48:52
Speaker
Doesn't seem healthy when you put it like that to now bring up that stuff. You do a favor and you move on from it. That's true. Yeah. So, yeah. ah But I feel like she was kind of just maybe panicking.
00:49:06
Speaker
And that was something trying to manipulate the situation. But she gets $20 an hour and we're good. Right. Then suddenly everything's fine.
00:49:18
Speaker
And here comes the, we're kind of crescendoing up here as we go towards the the really, I mean, John Lovett's coming in as Steve. It's just, it's it's it's so well done.
00:49:30
Speaker
I've read that a lot of it was improvised deliberately. really? His lines were, I don't know if that's true or not, but you know the that the girls' lines were scripted, but his little interjections were deliberately improvised by him at the time.
00:49:46
Speaker
Okay. I could totally see that because while I was watching it, I kept thinking about his character in A League of Their Own. Did you ever see A League of Their Own? I've not, no.
00:49:59
Speaker
Oh, Al. Okay, that that's a homework assignment because his character is just a jerk, but he's so funny.
00:50:12
Speaker
So funny. and um But like I kept feeling like, so I'm wondering if some of the funnier lines and things like that were improvised in that movie as well.
00:50:25
Speaker
Right. You know, there must be a little bit of him coming out there. I think it to me it makes sense that if you have an actor of that caliber who can do that because then you'll get the authentic reactions of the other staff, which is what you need when he's when he's stoned and he's all over the place and you want that reaction. What do you mean you know gummy bears and taco shells? and you You want that not knowing what's coming next. Like an envelope.
00:50:54
Speaker
And i again, there's things that I find very funny that I think most people it would maybe brush over. But the way he calls Rachel, greeter girl. Yes, I have that written down too.
00:51:07
Speaker
I just think that's a great line. Like he's just so out of it. And that's one of the lines that that made me think about A League of Their Own. Really? Okay. So in the movie, he's a...
00:51:20
Speaker
he's a A recruiter, like a, you know, he's a scout. He's a scout. He's a baseball scout. And so the girl's the main character. She works on a dairy farm.
00:51:32
Speaker
So he calls them milkmaid and cowgirl, you know, or, you know, but he calls them things like that. So whenever he said greeter girl. Really? Yes. Yes.
00:51:43
Speaker
That's a great throwback. All right. You've made a strong case for watching this. Oh, it's an excellent movie. Excellent movie. Well, something I didn't know going into this, and again, what I try to do is watch the episode without any background knowledge, but then I'll maybe look up a few things.
00:52:00
Speaker
But John Lovitz and Lisa Kudrow's brother were childhood friends. Really? And John Lovett encouraged like ah Lisa Kudrow to get into comedy and helped her with some comedy clubs. Like they go way back to the very beginning of her um professional career.
00:52:18
Speaker
Yeah, but her and her brother were very good friends. I love that. Which is which a lovely thing. But so I mean, we can sort of go through all the things he does. They're fantastic. But yeah.
00:52:29
Speaker
the taco shells or the macaroni and cheese. We've got to make this. you know yeah and then I think they're my favorite. And then his yeah and then see how he just kind of stands there and then he drops it.
00:52:42
Speaker
So then she'll pick it up and then he takes the gummy bear. I mean, it's just like slapstick. It's so well done. Yes. The only only thing I didn't get in the scene was, you know, Rachel's in the kitchen doing the whole sort of simulating smoking a joint thing to Monica.
00:53:01
Speaker
Why doesn't Phoebe just tell her? They're sitting in the living room together. yeah You know, Phoebe could have just whispered at you know... guys But that wouldn't have been very funny. It would not have been funny. It's like it's a sitcom. You're right. It would it wouldn't be good.
00:53:16
Speaker
It wouldn't be good. But yet Monica rightly loses the plot with him. um And I've got some listener mail about this, about this scene, which we'll get to afterwards.
00:53:27
Speaker
But yeah, it he ends up sort of raiding the kitchen and she's just done, isn't she? Just kind of enough. ah It's just so good. i mean, kind we we do see John Lovitz again as a different character way later in the series.
00:53:44
Speaker
um But we don't see Steve again. And I think Steve was fantastic. ah yeah Brought so much joy to that couple of minutes. Oh, yeah.
00:53:55
Speaker
And that's what's so funny. ah Because this episode, that's the part that I remember. you know Right, before right.
00:54:06
Speaker
sitting down to really dig into this up episode. And I'm like, really? That was all of one scene. One scene. One scene. But that that stood and that had lines and things that we joke about.
00:54:21
Speaker
Right. And one scene. It's all for one scene. That's crazy. Honestly, probably wasn't a very long scene, a couple of minutes, if that. Yeah. Isn't that crazy?
00:54:33
Speaker
What the whole episode is about. Knock my ass and call me Judy. That's right. Oh, my It's so good. So good. But we bounce from there over to almost the final scene where you have more information than I do, I believe, because they're in Central Park.
00:54:50
Speaker
Ross certainly tells Joey about his date and he says that he was the James Milner of Darty Talk. um But they both got tired. They ended up cuddling. um yeah But we'll talk about it.
00:55:01
Speaker
and I looked up some information on James Milner. We'll talk about after the the recap. Oh, okay. But then they realized, let's see, Chandler is missing him. They cut to him in the office um where he's yelling at somebody about the weenus.
00:55:15
Speaker
Poor Fran. That's right, Fran. That's it. And be i interpret this as Chandler's turned into his worst nightmare. The guy he didn't want to become.
00:55:26
Speaker
Right. And he pushes the chair back from the desk. Oh. Yeah. Chandler suddenly is is very invested and cares a lot about this yeah job he didn't want to.
00:55:42
Speaker
Yep. But certainly on the on the ah the streaming version, we end in Phoebe's massage studio, which think interesting. It's the only time we see it in this episode is the last 30 seconds or so. And she's deliberately hurting Steve to get back at him for treating Monica so poorly.
00:55:59
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. And it kind of ends on that note. But we got I say we had Listera Mail. Kate, my darling wife, wrote in um through our Facebook page, which I loved. And she wanted to know what you thought.
00:56:12
Speaker
um She wondered if Monica actually made a mistake. She really gave up on her dream job and was possibly overreacting. She could have accommodated Steve, at least seen out the dinner, even if he was a jerk.
00:56:25
Speaker
So he would be happy. And she wanted to know your thoughts on that. Okay. Well, you know how she says dinner's over and then the timer goes off and she has just said, you can't wait four and a half minutes for a tartlet and dinner's over. And then the timer goes off and he goes, and well, then in that next scene, we find out that apparently it continued on.
00:56:51
Speaker
ke Yeah. Because yeah he and then I told him, you know, that's a kitchen magnet, don't eat it, and he didn't listen. So it ended up a dumpster fire either way.
00:57:03
Speaker
It's just dawned on me, we have discussed this whole episode and neither of us have said the word tartlet. Tartlet. Tartlet. I mean, we know the word has lost all meaning, but neither of us, said we we couldn't possibly record an episode and not say tartlet.
00:57:19
Speaker
right' Right? But the word has lost all meaning. All meaning. But do I see it? No, i don't. I don't think she made a mistake because as I feel like Kate would also agree with me on this statement, what you think is your dream might not be that right then at that time.
00:57:43
Speaker
Very true. Very true. And so, no, mean, he's high. He would rather eat sugaros and gummy bears than your salmon mousse and onion tartlets and lobster whatever so no because you can still have high expectations and things like that and not give up your dream indeed i agree now i'd heard i'd heard of james milner i knew he was an author i think but honestly i didn't know anything about him i couldn't have told you anything he'd written
00:58:18
Speaker
I don't know you knew anything about it. Honestly, it didn't even ring any bell and it just kind of went in one ear and out the other. Yeah. So i just I did a little search. He's won a Pulitzer Prize um for Tales of the South Pacific.
00:58:32
Speaker
he's He wrote a lot of books about different places around the world, fictional books, as well as non-fiction, but fictional books ah set at different places around the world. And oddly enough, he studied in St Andrews, which is in Scotland, for a couple of years, and then spent the latter years of his life and passed away in Austin, our state capital, but seemingly did very, very well for himself. He became a bit of a philanthropist.
00:58:59
Speaker
and his daughter And in his lifetime donated over $100 million dollars to writing and educational causes, including a lot of them at the University of Texas, where he has, think it was, i don't know if it's a library or a room, something is named after him at UT, because he spent a lot of his latter years when he was giving his money away.
00:59:20
Speaker
um There, but yeah, over $100 million dollars to writing and educational causes. Wow. Yeah, so clearly hugely successful, more successful than I realized, I think.
00:59:31
Speaker
Okay, so then hang on. What was the line with him? It was, it was Ross. Ross said, it was the James Milner of Dirty Talk. Oh, okay.
00:59:43
Speaker
All right. it' So you it's an academic joke. Yeah, so it must be. Yeah, because he's... Exactly. Zero of his friends would have even... Any idea, I think. Yeah. Yeah. There he is saying things. this Yeah, exactly. Now, I've got to be honest. When we were looking at our Gunther Central Park for the week, this was the most difficult one for me we've had so far.
01:00:06
Speaker
Really? it was pretty easy for me. Okay, I'd love to hear who you chose for your Gunther Central Park. I chose Phoebe. Okay.
01:00:17
Speaker
ah Because she's like, I know, you know, you're looking for a job and I've got my friend. And, you know, as she she was always thinking. And then I loved whenever she showed up um at Chandler's office and she's like, you know, this is so much bigger than your cubicle. It's a cube.
01:00:37
Speaker
like So she had obviously been at his work before and checked out his workplace and, you know, had come over to see that. And then at the end, she's hurting Steve. I mean, not to condone physical violence because.
01:00:52
Speaker
Of course. No, but of course. But, you know, like she's sticking up for her friends. She's taken care of. She's looking out for. and I just that's why she is my Gunther Central Perk of this week.
01:01:06
Speaker
I love it. I think now that you've you sort of not justified, but you've explained it, I see completely why you've done that. I went with Chandler, just some his one-liners, the way he catches Ross and Joey.
01:01:21
Speaker
um I like that Innsbruck in 76 line. I just like it. And again, I enjoy catastrophizing unhinged Chandler when like he doesn't know what he wants to do with his life and this, that, and the other.
01:01:36
Speaker
um I enjoy that aspect of his character. So usually i go for all the jokes with Chandler, but this is a little different, but still Chandler Bing is my central park. And how about your rating out of 10 cups of coffee?
01:01:50
Speaker
Okay. Well, so Al, I... um
01:01:58
Speaker
I have gone back and forth between six and seven. And because, um
01:02:07
Speaker
i don't know. I think I'm going to go with seven. I'm going to go with seven. and
01:02:15
Speaker
Because the only other one that I gave in six to was the episode with Roger. Right. and And it was definitely better than that one. that's That's a very good point.
01:02:27
Speaker
And oddly, I went between six and seven as well, but ended up going to six. Because I felt, I felt if it, and this would actually, I suppose, be a case for maybe giving it seven.
01:02:38
Speaker
I thought it wasn't for the John Lovett's Steve scene at the end, it would definitely be a six. Even though there's some funny stuff. All of them have funny stuff. Right. But and i've got so I've got to be a harsh critic.
01:02:50
Speaker
You know, I've got to hold friends to a high standard. And I thought, well, ah you know ah and i looked at like you I look at the other ones that I've given it I've given a couple ah six um So, and a couple of seven. And the ones that are seven are definitely funnier.
01:03:05
Speaker
To me, they're better quality episodes. So, I like that you've gone with a seven after hesitating I've gone with the six after hesitating. After hesitating. I think that works out quite quite nicely and it's quite fair.
01:03:17
Speaker
We had a couple of comments. and So, I do post on a couple of Facebook pages, you when we're recording an episode. We had two listeners. I'll just give their first names. One's Susan, who said that she just thinks Lovitz is hilarious and plays the part perfectly.
01:03:32
Speaker
And we couldn't agree more. And then a lady from sorry that lady from Brooklyn, a lady named Brooklyn, said that she also loves John Lovett in this and that he plays the dad in a film called Rat Race, which I remember seeing when it came out. I haven't seen it since.
01:03:49
Speaker
ah Really? That movie is hilarious. And she brought she brings that up and yes, in that movie, ah the whole...
01:04:01
Speaker
ah and that movie is just such a just dumpster fire after dumpster fire of just hilarity and john cleese and and mr bean like ron atkinson is it those people when yes he's in it too but then is like seth green is in it um god who else hey but it It's so funny, but John Lovitz, he's the dad, but he doesn't want to tell his family that they're trying to get to the money.
01:04:32
Speaker
They end up stealing Hitler's car, and he ends up with the mustache. like it It's so funny. All right. More more. have seen it. That's another movie that he's in that's really good.
01:04:47
Speaker
Yeah. and What's funny is I was going through, and I was looking at his IMDb, And I was like, I saw Rat Race and I was like, oh, I forgot he was in that. that That was hilarious.
01:04:59
Speaker
And then, of course, League Their Own. And that was so funny. um And that that movie is not a comedy. Like League of Their Own, no, it's not. But he's funny.
01:05:15
Speaker
But yeah, ah Hotel trans Transylvania, he was a voice of somebody in there. Right. But he was he's just kind of in some random stuff.
01:05:26
Speaker
But Rat Race is definitely a really high one on there, too. was i remember it being funny. But like said, saw when it first came out. and That's one that we've seen.
01:05:38
Speaker
Oh, and he was in The Wedding Singer, too. He was one of the other singers. ah One of the other wedding singers that tries out for her wedding. And he's just a jerk.
01:05:51
Speaker
He's just a jerk and and funny. I mean, and that that's that's the, you could typecast him pretty easily. Right. and so He's one of those people that because he's typecast, I really don't know much he's in, but you just know who he is.
01:06:06
Speaker
Yeah. Because he's quite a unique, unique guy. Well, I think before we wrap this up, do you have any final thoughts on this episode? and No, i just, I want to go back and just reiterate. It is so crazy to me.
01:06:21
Speaker
that he is in this episode all of probably three minutes. Right. And that's that the scene. Yeah, this is it. That's the scene. Yeah. yeah i complete It would have been a forgettable episode to me if it hadn't been for this, for ending on this note.
01:06:38
Speaker
it's It's so good. yeah but yeah um Let's see. Next week, we are doing the one with two parts, part one. I'm looking forward to this one immensely. We may well have a surprise guest that will be making a quick appearance on the podcast.
01:06:56
Speaker
So we certainly hope you can join us for that. But on that note, thank you guys all very much for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
