Introduction and Summer Mode

00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a Friends Rewatch Pod. I am one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside the wonderful Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
Doing awesome as always, Al. I'm just excited to be digging into this episode of Friends. Fantastic. We are at different stages of entering summer mode, which is a great time of year.
00:00:30
Speaker
Yeah, it is. Especially on your summer break. I'm almost there. And yeah, exciting times, exciting times in education as we get towards the end of June. Absolutely.
00:00:41
Speaker
Yes. But then time has to slow down. It does. We need a slow month or so. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. But it gives us some time between vacations and trips away and things to record some episodes.

Episode Discussion: 'The One with Phoebe's Husband'

00:00:56
Speaker
And we are doing the one with Phoebe's husband today, which we we are excited to record. But as always, before we get stuck into the episode, let's play a little round of Bamboozled.
00:01:11
Speaker
I don't have that many questions for you today. I think I only have six. Whoa! yeah I have 11. So I'll go first. You go first and hopefully I don't duplicate any of yours. ah Or hopefully I don't duplicate

Trivia Game: Bamboozled

00:01:27
Speaker
yours. Always a chance.
00:01:29
Speaker
ah Yeah. i All right. So my first question is, who's Rachel on the phone with when the pigeon flies into her apartment? She is on the phone. i I think it must be her mother.
00:01:43
Speaker
That is correct. Ding, ding, ding. Excellent. All right, my first one for you, including Phoebe's marriage. How many secrets are revealed in the first scene?
00:01:55
Speaker
oh Oh, okay. i bo Including Phoebe. Yes, I'll give you one Phoebe's marriage. And then, you know, after the opening credits. Right, and then there's Monica's underwear.
00:02:08
Speaker
Yep. Okay, and then there's Chandler's nubbin. Yep. And then there's Joey's movie. Joey's movie. Yes. We'll dance around that delicately on the family, the purple door podcast. That is correct. yeah sure
00:02:30
Speaker
When Duncan shows up in that first scene and, and, uh, Rachel, you know, freaks out, opens up the thing and the pigeon flies back out and he's so impressed.
00:02:43
Speaker
Um, he's holding flowers for phoebe yes can you tell me either what kind of flowers those are or what color they are well i think i think both um because i'm pretty sure they're white and i remember thinking they were daffodils but it was not daffodils oh what are they he got the first letter right yeah they're and they're not They're not daisies. They're not daisies. Yeah, they're daisies. That's it. They're daisies. Not daisies.
00:03:16
Speaker
I remember thinking I should look that up and I didn't. Yes. White daisies. White daisies. All right. My next one for you. What is Duncan's fiance's name?
00:03:28
Speaker
Oh, I have that one. It is Deborah. Deborah, it is. Yes.
00:03:35
Speaker
Okay.
00:03:39
Speaker
All right. So african american at the very end of the episode, Ross is dancing to singing in the rain everything. And then he goes in he goes to the newsstand and then he goes to the coffee shop.
00:03:55
Speaker
What's in the window of the coffee shop? That is a great, great question.
00:04:05
Speaker
I have absolutely no idea. It's a neon coffee mug with the little things going up. I did not catch that at all. The steam. It's big and ridiculous.
00:04:18
Speaker
And I've so paid attention to that because on the last episode that we recorded, we had a whole conversation about the exterior of that coffee shop. That's right. We did. And I feel like

Storytime and Personal Anecdotes

00:04:32
Speaker
it's not right.
00:04:33
Speaker
The coffee shop's not right. like They have not used the same facade for the outside right they changed it yeah right because now he's seen it three times at least right and things just keep changing all right so my next one for you yes how long were phoebe and duncan married six years well done you are on a roll six years it is
00:05:09
Speaker
All right
00:05:12
Speaker
right. Why is Phoebe dressed so nice to go to the ice cave?
00:05:20
Speaker
Does she say something like, because,
00:05:27
Speaker
no, um um I feel like she says something what's wrong with dressing nice for your gay husband or something? is that I think it's nice to dress nice for your gay husband. All right, there we go. Good.
00:05:38
Speaker
Yes. All right. What time is it when everyone initially wants to leave? 11.30. 11.30. Well done.
00:05:50
Speaker
Okay. and How many pieces of furniture during that secret scene that they're hopping around and freaking out because of all the things that are flying around?
00:06:03
Speaker
How many pieces of furniture get stood on? Man, that's a great, the only one that remembers Ross standing on the couch, but there must be more because you're asking this question.
00:06:14
Speaker
So I'm going to go with the chair, the couch and the coffee table. going to go with three. It's actually just two. Just two. Yes. So Ross is on the couch and then Rachel's on the coffee table and then Ross, Rachel and Phoebe, but they're just on their knees, but they go back on the couch.
00:06:36
Speaker
That's a good question. I like that one. I feel, let's see, who was Julie's first grade teacher?
00:06:48
Speaker
Mrs. Cobb. Mrs. Cobb liked the salad. Salad. Now what exactly goes in a Cobb salad? That's right. Let's discuss that. Okay.
00:06:59
Speaker
and Where does Phoebe go to watch the Ice Capade? She goes to Madison Square Garden. Okay. Very good. Which is, I believe, the second appearance of it after Ross gets hit in the face with a puck. It's a hockey puck.
00:07:15
Speaker
Yep. Yep. All right. My final one for you is, what is Ross's apartment number?
00:07:24
Speaker
Oh, no. We see it when he and Rachel talking. At the end, whenever they're standing out there. Yep. It's on the door. Oh, God.
00:07:36
Speaker
Is it 11? you You get the point. It is 11D. Is it really? Well done. Yes!
00:07:48
Speaker
That's amazing. Well, because I was like 18. And I was like, no, that's not right. And then I was like 8. And then i was like, no, that was Heckles. And then there you go. 11D. That was lucky. All right.
00:08:02
Speaker
What is Duncan dressed up as in the ice capades? He is dressed up like a matador. Excellent. And then I have one more. okay Okay. Okay.

Phoebe's Past and Relationships

00:08:16
Speaker
Rachel, Phoebe always has believed in Duncan.
00:08:22
Speaker
What part was he playing as an ice dancer that she's like, I remember you when?
00:08:33
Speaker
I won't get it. I remember the scene and the moment, but don't remember what what was said. Okay. King Friday and Mr. Rogers' Ice Nice.
00:08:45
Speaker
Yep, now that you say it. Yep. Yep. That's fantastic. All right. A good round of bamboozled, that one. I just, um yeah, I struggled to find too many questions, but you came up with some great ones.
00:08:59
Speaker
That is and fantastic. But yeah, as you alluded to in Bamboozled, we start off in the girls' apartment. Rachel's on the phone with her mother, defending the fact that they live on a safe street. and you know, there was some incident blocks away.
00:09:16
Speaker
um yeah And she was walking alone at night. And mom, don't worry, I would never. She would never do that. Never. But yeah, as she's on the phone, she starts screaming or shrieking because a pigeon just...
00:09:31
Speaker
flies into the, flies into the, uh, the kitchen. Um, and I gotta be honest, I think she does a pretty good job for state. She stays pretty calm and just, I think she does an all right job.
00:09:44
Speaker
She does a great job. Al, have you ever been in a situation where a bird has been inside of your house or your place? So I've got a very funny anecdote to tell you, and I didn't think about this until you just asked.
00:09:59
Speaker
So years ago in my old house, I did have a bird that got in and it got stuck between the window and the blinds. Oh, no. But the problem was, listeners won't know this so much, but you remember the old Providence houses that were kind of two story, but the living room went all the way up.
00:10:17
Speaker
you know So the second floor didn't go all the And it was stuck in that top window. So that's 18 feet up in the air. So we had to, um it was literally like the poking device for ugly naked guy.
00:10:30
Speaker
It was keeping things together because the ladder I had wouldn't reach it. It was about seven or eight feet too short. So yeah, we we had things attached to brooms, attached just just to kind of open the, or pull the blinds back from the window to let it fly away.
00:10:48
Speaker
how did we get in there? So we don't know. we did we, we, I remember getting up in the morning and hearing the noise. And that was that, but here's the funny story.
00:11:00
Speaker
That's the only time I've ever had to burn in the house until I went home in May. So, I mean, five weeks ago, maybe a month ago, I went back to Scotland and my dad had bought a clock for me because he has a clock in his little study that on the hour, every hour it's,
00:11:19
Speaker
goes to the picture of a bird and it makes that bird's chirp or noise, whatever that bird makes. And I made a comment that I really liked it. And my dad being wonderful as he is, got one from me, from Aldi.
00:11:34
Speaker
Put it in my suitcase, brought it home and we hung it up in the kitchen and it's set to the time in Scotland, hang up in the kitchen. ah That was one month ago.
00:11:45
Speaker
We have had two birds in the house in the last month. And we are convinced that that clock is acting like some kind of homing beacon. Wow. so It was up for two or three days. And Lulu, my stepdaughter, came downstairs and woke me up and went, Al, help.
00:12:05
Speaker
There's a bird. So I went upstairs and it was on the ground. So I managed to sneak up and i threw a towel over it. and then slid a big piece of cardboard underneath it and just carried it outside and whipped the towel off and off it went.
00:12:20
Speaker
And you know, I'm thinking, okay, that's a weird coincidence, but there we go. That's that. um Then where were Kate and I? We were somewhere couple weeks ago and Jack calls us and said, there's a bird in the house and they opened the door and eventually they weren't going to try and catch it. It flew out by itself.
00:12:41
Speaker
Oh, that's good. Very, very odd. that we've suddenly had two. And that's what led to the discussion about this clock somehow summoning the birds into the house. I wonder. yeah They're like, Hey, we've got Brendan here.
00:12:56
Speaker
But Rachel, Rachel does pretty well again. Yeah. doesn't strike me as being in her nature to be so cavaliers to catch to catch a pigeon. No.
00:13:07
Speaker
Well, and she thought of what to do. very quickly. yeah I'm just saying we had a bird in a classroom this year and like I was somebody came and got me and I'm like, yeah, let's go.
00:13:23
Speaker
had no clue what we were going to do and how we were going to catch this bird. I ran around with a box screaming a lot, but it's like, ah yeah, she's so calm and like, yeah, like we're going to solve this problem.
00:13:38
Speaker
so easy and I don't know good for her yeah i can I can deal with most things but things that move quickly I don't like like when you're trying to catch them because it's just it's just a struggle ah yeah she does well and yeah I mean she's she's about to release this thing I think and then knock on the door and she yells that it's open or you know it's unlocked and in comes Phoebe's husband um
00:14:10
Speaker
Carrying white daisies. Carrying the daisies, a fine choice, I think.

Rachel's Jealousy and Relationships

00:14:14
Speaker
um But yeah, it's ah it was quite surprising. you know we Rachel accidentally lets the bird go. I wonder if she went and caught it again, um yeah how she got rid of it.
00:14:26
Speaker
um But yeah, we go sort on to the next scene and everyone's there asking Phoebe about Duncan. And obviously mo if we find that Monica knew Duncan. She knew of him and the story there. And obviously, Phoebe was quite heartbroken at the time.
00:14:44
Speaker
But then we sort of all descend or and everyone descends into this, you know, ratting each other out and Chandler, you know, if I'm going down, you're going down with me. And it's just this explosion of lies across the whole the whole gang, which is really, really funny.
00:15:01
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. it's It's a fast forward few episodes to whenever Jack and
00:15:14
Speaker
ah the Gellers are there and the where they're just all yelling all this stuff. And then she's like, that was a lot of information all at once. than here And then Joey's, I want to go home. That's right. Good old Joey.
00:15:33
Speaker
Now, we found out that Duncan is from Canada, and I know you've been to Canada, but tell me about briefly about your experience up there. ah So I've been to Canada quite a few times. and One time I went to Toronto for a Harry Potter convention where me and a friend of mine, we we we presented um the Illuminati influence.
00:15:58
Speaker
Hold on, you presented a Harry Potter conference. I know. I know. and so crazy. But yes, and it was very good. And it was very much upset a few people because we were talking about the Illuminati influence in the Harry Potter series.
00:16:14
Speaker
And it was before the seventh book came out for sure. But it might have been like right after the sixth book came out. And oh, yeah, people got very offended by all the parallels that we were drawing. It was it was good stuff.
00:16:31
Speaker
That's fantastic. Every day is a school day. I didn't know that about you. That's fantastic. Well, there you go. Yes. Yes. Cause aren't your in-laws Canadian or live in-law? They are not Canadian, but my, uh, my father-in-law lives in Minnesota and up until just a few months ago, he owned a hunting and fishing lodge in Northern Ontario.
00:16:56
Speaker
And so we went up there quite a few times, um, since Joseph and I have been married and, um, ah beautiful, beautiful, beautiful scene. most, the coolest, like Toronto was very much just like any other city, like, but clean.
00:17:19
Speaker
So clean is what I remember about Toronto. But, um, and And driving through Ontario, like you start at International Falls, which is just a little town, and then you drive.
00:17:33
Speaker
And then there's like, you drive for hours and hours, and there's like a tiny town. Hours and hours in another tiny town. And then we drive down a dirt road for 45 minutes. And then you hop on a boat and then go out to the lodge.
00:17:47
Speaker
And um like we've seen on our little tracks, we've seen moose. that just huge moose hanging out on the side of the road.
00:17:57
Speaker
what at One time when we were driving up and I'm driving down the highway and we're just driving along and I'm like, there's a dog in the road up here. That's so weird. and we start getting closer and closer and it gets bigger and bigger and no, it was a bear.
00:18:14
Speaker
yes ah so I just stopped and it, it posed for us and like stood up on his hind legs and then And then just got down and trampled off into the woods on the side of the road.
00:18:28
Speaker
I'm like, it was a bear. was a damn bear. and A big bear, a big black bear. bear I love it. Yeah. But I love Canada.
00:18:40
Speaker
Ooh. But what was so scary is, you know, they have fires and right now they're having some really bad wildfires that are, um going up into Alaska have you heard about that no no I haven't yeah um but the it was so weird because the last time that we went up there um we're driving and like we got out at the town before you turn on the dirt road to go down the dirt road and it's like hazy and you can smell the smoke they were like no you're fine I'm like we're about to like
00:19:18
Speaker
What, right what, but they're like, nah, the wind doesn't blow this way, but they get wildfires every summer and it's just part of their. Lots of living there.
00:19:32
Speaker
Yeah. Which is so wild. yeah I don't know, but it was nerve wracking to me because like you could smell it, you know, and it's like, yeah, wouldn't feel too terribly comfortable.
00:19:47
Speaker
Right, but I mean, obviously it all

Phoebe's Divorce and Duncan's Revelation

00:19:49
Speaker
ended up fine. We didn't burn up in a wildfire anything, so that was the news. Good. I'm glad to hear that. The gang all kind of go a bit nuts with, um yeah, all of these secrets and Chandler and his nubbin and Joey being in an X-rated movie and it's ah and all the beans. Fun Bobby.
00:20:13
Speaker
Fun Bobby. Fun Bobby up to no good on the balcony. yeah yeah everyone's just throwing everybody else under the bus um but yeah we we go over to the coffee shop and we see julie again ross chandler and julie they're sitting on the couch talking um ross keeps cracking jokes um i do quite like the one about the with the milk the milk jug thing yeah yeah you I think, it again, it's there's something about the physical comedy, just how he very just kind of, I don't know, hey, fill me up, which I don't know. it p oldhandr Poor old Chandler.
00:20:54
Speaker
Poor Chandler. yeah but and he Yes. And then, you know, Julie, like, tries to help him yeah out, you know? Yeah, that's right. It's a sign of virility. Like, you know, it's all right.
00:21:08
Speaker
It's all right. Any of these places in the tri-state area, which I meant to Google that. I'm assuming it's New York and then, but I don't know if it's kind of like New Jersey or if it's the other way to Connecticut. I don't really know when they refer to the tri-state area.
00:21:25
Speaker
um What the three states are. Yeah, i don't know. Yeah. i found I've heard that phrase before, but obviously it's, I would assume New York and then two adjoining states.
00:21:39
Speaker
but just in what direction. yeah But yeah, rachel Rachel's struggling. she's ah she's ah She's jealous of of Ross and Julie, but then Ross talks to her. um this Nope, that's the next scene.
00:21:53
Speaker
No. Rachel, excuse me, you can just tell is jealous. The way she's kind of watching Julie and Ross interact with each other. Monica tries to help her, giving her some advice. Perfect.
00:22:07
Speaker
stupid advice yeah I mean that's like yeah it's telling somebody to calm down that's right that's exactly what thought no good comes from that yeah no yeah yeah yeah I mean good for Rachel for kind of saying yeah I've only had thought about that yeah that's right I just tried to get over them that would be good uh but that's when Phoebe comes in dressed to the nines very fancy hair done um you know, all of that lovely Jurassic Park, you know?
00:22:37
Speaker
We have a a listener who knows. It's New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Ah, very nice.
00:22:48
Speaker
She's so smart. She is so smart. I could take a decent guess at who the listener is, considering the only person who is listening to half of this is, well, one is Hayley.
00:23:00
Speaker
Yeah, Haley's over here listening to my half, but Kate's over there listening to yours. Kate is in the other room and listening away. So good for her. So now we know.
00:23:10
Speaker
New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Yeah, so Kate is from New Jersey.

Rachel's Struggle with Ross and Julie

00:23:16
Speaker
So so she she's been part of that tri-state. Yes, good, good, man. I've just learned something there.
00:23:24
Speaker
Good. Okay. Yeah, so she's all dressed up, looking pretty fancy, going to see Duncan. um Yeah, nothing wrong with that, of course. You know, she's, um you know, hopefully she's not trying to, know, she's not harboring feelings for him still. But but she is She is.
00:23:42
Speaker
She is. She Yeah, you can tell that, ah yeah, when they meet, you know, the hug lingers on her end and things like that. Yeah.
00:23:55
Speaker
But yeah, it's interesting that he hasn't come up really before, but I like him. i think he's a good character. He's well-played. Yeah, and Phoebe, she's got a wide variety of men that appear that have been in the past, and you know ah Charlie Sheen's character is going to pop up, and this is somebody from the past, and you know and And then way down the line into the future, you know, Phoebe may, I was thinking about this after I watched the episode, Phoebe kind of alludes to the fact that she maybe got married in Vegas because she says, you know, if you get married in Vegas, it's only valid in Vegas. And people yeah tell her, no, that's not true. And she kind of, her eyes almost fall out of her head.
00:24:43
Speaker
yes so i wondered if that was Duncan, if they flew to Vegas, you know, to to get hitched quickly or if it was somebody else. I think it would have to be because she signs the papers for the divorce.
00:24:55
Speaker
Right. So I think it has be, you know, unless there's another marriage in her history. To me, it makes sense that it's Duncan. That'd be the place to go for a quick a quickie marriage. Well, see, and my thought would be maybe it wasn't ah wasn't Duncan and her eyes were like that because she was like, oh, my God, I was married to two people at the same time. She was a polygamist and didn't know it.
00:25:19
Speaker
Ah. Yes. Yes. She's cooler than I thought. You know how, like, with โ€“ yeah success ah you know how like with um the big bang theory, the, they didn't do a sequel really did like a prequel with young Sheldon.
00:25:35
Speaker
Yeah. If we could go back into Phoebe's life as a teenager, that would be great. That would be a fun show. That would be, that'd be one I would tune in for man. Yeah. Yeah. The stories that she could tell, I think would be fantastic.
00:25:49
Speaker
Yes. That would be funny. So we're still in the coffee shop and Ross kind of playfully flirts Rachel, you know, kind of kicks her jump. Okay, but wait. You didn't even talk about whenever Julie leaves and she's like, bye, Rachel. And she's like, bye, Julie. That's right. Julie's been nothing but sweet. Nothing but nice to her.
00:26:09
Speaker
But it's so good. That's right. And Rachel, she's obviously being a bit fake at this point. And, you know, yeah, this Julie has done nothing wrong. In fact, she's been extra nice, since I feel, to everybody.
00:26:24
Speaker
Yes, but it's so funny. Yeah, Julie really is nice. She is. She really, really is. And she seems to fit in very well with with the gang.
00:26:35
Speaker
But Ross is ah yeah playfully flirting with Rachel a bit, kind kicking her gently. And then Ross is concerned about, shall we just say, the lack of intimacy between him and Julie. Asked Rachel for advice and not Rachel's finest moment.
00:26:49
Speaker
um gives him some pretty terrible advice that I can't quite believe that Ross buys into.
00:27:02
Speaker
Maybe? think so, because you gotta think. He doesn't necessarily know. Right. yeah He doesn't necessarily know.
00:27:13
Speaker
And yeah, it's not terrible advice if it's coming from her. Because that would be great. Like that's exactly what she would prefer to have happen here.
00:27:25
Speaker
Right. yeah ah So I'm just saying, dad, i don't hate on her for that at all. Right. You're thinking that's that's not too bad. No. All right.
00:27:36
Speaker
Let's go with it. Good on Rachel. Well, we bounce over to Madison Square Garden, and as we said, for the second time in the series so far. I'm trying to think ahead.
00:27:48
Speaker
You know, obviously they talk about going to hockey games and things, at various points, but this might be the second and last time we actually see it or is it not? No, because they go to, ah later on they go with,
00:28:05
Speaker
is it, um, Mike, is it Mike that they take whenever they're trying to be friends with him? Yes. Yes. And they take him. um But yeah, no, they they go to, they go again.
00:28:18
Speaker
Oh, they go to a basketball game. They go to a Knicks game. Yes. Oh, that's right. So there's a few more times that they end up at the garden. That's right. it's ah this is This is the time we see backstage a bit. Phoebe's waiting there for Duncan and he comes in dressed, as you said, as a matador.
00:28:36
Speaker
um Pretty sort of flamboyant outfit. I can't imagine skating in something. i can't imagine skating. full stop to be honest, but, um, that I imagine it looks like it'd be quite restrictive and quite a tricky thing to do. it was Yeah.
00:28:53
Speaker
Yeah. Just big and bulky, like the sleeves on that thing where, and then you could see in the background, like the sleeves that were, that have all the ruffles going down it. Yeah.
00:29:07
Speaker
Bulky, like a lot what going on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but the scene's over pretty quick. He goes to get get dressed or get changed. Phoebe thinks she's being funny with her. Olay.
00:29:22
Speaker
Good old Phoebe there. But um one of my favorite favorite lines is coming up. I do quite like this. When we go back over to Ross's apartment and you know Ross kisses Julie and everyone walks in, but Chandler's like, hey, you've got a paleontologist on your face.
00:29:37
Speaker
you know you're good now you're good now i mean easy joke but just again the delivery you know channel oh not always always pretty good with his delivery it's what he does um but they all come in obviously ross has invited everyone ross and julie have invited everyone over um for dinner but it quickly takes a bit of a turn when chandler reveals he has joey's x-rated movie Um, yeah, my pocket and it's that giant DVD. You forget how big that was so funny. I'm going to ask you a question, but don't worry. It's not going down any kind of sorted CD road But have you ever watched a movie with like your kids or your family that you thought would be completely family friendly and ended up being awkward or difficult or weird and you're sitting there just wanting to walk out?
00:30:33
Speaker
Oh my God. Yes. Like that happens too much. Right. but I remember even as a kid, we went to um for my friend's fifth, no, not fifth birthday, but we were in fifth grade.
00:30:49
Speaker
So whatever birthday that is like 11. um yeah We went to the movies and we watched um National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
00:31:01
Speaker
And and Oh my God. that My mom went and because she was friends with my friend's mom. So there was me and I think I was the only girl. And then there's these like four boys and my mom and her jumping, trying to cover everybody's eyeballs, you know, and it was like, oh my God.
00:31:27
Speaker
And then, and so that was awkward and terrible. And then ah Joseph and I, on our first date, went and saw a movie that made me very uncomfortable. And him and' very uncomfortable. And we're just both like, I'm like, I wish I would have like, the synopsis of this movie better because I'm so uncomfortable.
00:31:50
Speaker
That's a great story to have. Oh, God. Whatever years it is later on. Dude, yes. ah We have the worst first date ever in the history of any first date.
00:32:03
Speaker
We went and had sushi that made him sick. Right. And then we went and watched a horribly awkward movie. So there you go. It could only go up from there.
00:32:16
Speaker
ah The reason I asked you is because we were down in, it reminded me of this. We were down, and if Kate can hear me, she'll chime in via text message. Down in Austin and a year ago or so, visiting Kate's brother and wife and children. And her mom was there.
00:32:33
Speaker
And I can't remember who suggested it, but we ended up putting on a movie called Tropic Thunder. Okay. I don't know if you've ever seen it. I've not seen it, but I know of the movie.
00:32:45
Speaker
Right. yeah. And the humor is, it's no I mean, none of it's awful, but it's, a okay, so Matt, ah my brother-in-law, Kate's brother, recommended it. It's somewhere between crass and super awkward watching with your mother-in-law.
00:33:04
Speaker
And we were all, like all of us kids, we're sitting looking at each other going, how long do we give this? Like one more super inappropriate joke with um with my mother, like Kate's mother sitting there, you know?
00:33:17
Speaker
And I think we stopped. it I think one of us piped up and kind of said, all right, think I'm done with this and the rest of us. If memory serves me right, we're like, yeah. Or maybe we watched all of it and then just kind debriefed about how horribly uncomfortable that was.
00:33:31
Speaker
Yeah. But it was so funny and it just reminded me a bit of that situation. Yeah. Because it was so funny. um Yeah. um Oh, and we must mention, and Kate's just reminded me because we discussed this this morning, um that Duncan is in a tremendous television show that we just discovered a few weeks ago, but it's been around for a few years, called The Writer's Gemstones.
00:33:57
Speaker
um On HBO, he plays a... ah a um Pretty decent part in that. um So. How funny.
00:34:09
Speaker
Because didn't we just talk about somebody else that's in the Righteous Gemstones? There's a couple of people in it, I think, that are familiar. He's the main one that. Oh, wait.
00:34:21
Speaker
You teased this? I was say, did you tease this? I think maybe you and I discussed it after we recorded the last episode. Okay. Okay. Because I'm like, what on earth? Yeah, so that's We're all connected. It's all the conspiracy. Now, again, The Righteous Gemstones, superbly written, really funny.
00:34:41
Speaker
Don't watch it with your kids or your in-laws, I would suggest. There you go. Okay. I think it's all out there, public service announcement for you all. um Yeah, yeah.
00:34:53
Speaker
It's trucking along quite nicely with light humor, and then suddenly there's a lot of nudity and things, and then it goes away again. And it just, it, Yeah, catch you off guard. So with no children or in-laws, I would recommend.
00:35:08
Speaker
And of course, we've gone off in a tangent. I've completely lost track where we are. That's right. Chandler has Joey's movie. And they put it in. Rachel's not happy because she, I think, thinks this might make Ross ah amorous, shall we say.
00:35:24
Speaker
and so she kind of wants wants to put an end to all of this, I think, pretty quickly. um Okay. But I have a question for you, Al. Yes. Have you ever been in a movie?
00:35:38
Speaker
Have ever been in a movie? I don't think so. trying to think a situation where i could have been in the background of something.
00:35:49
Speaker
The only thing, a television show, been in the background, maybe a couple of things, that are not a movie. Now, it wouldn't shock me if you had been. Yes. i mean That's funny.
00:36:02
Speaker
ah We were extras for any given Sunday in at Texas Stadium before they took that down. They filmed like the big state or the big like championship game there.
00:36:15
Speaker
so we went and we got to see. And I feel like I've told you this because um Robert... Isn't Robert De Niro in that movie? I don't know. oh my God.
00:36:27
Speaker
All of our random conversations are starting to blend together. Oh, heavens. But anyway, so I was in that. I was in in the background in a movie called Flapper. She's French, but they changed the name to She Gets What She Wants.
00:36:43
Speaker
Oh, okay. And then i was in two short movies, and that's why I've got my IMDb page. I was going to say, only one of the hosts here has an IMDb page, and the game says it's not me.
00:36:55
Speaker
My extra work isn't on there. Oh. ah Dang it. Now, I just got another text from our one of our two live listeners right now.
00:37:07
Speaker
So Kate's house was on MTV, and she was inside the house at the time. so she Was it MTV Cribs? and Was it MTV Cribs? I'll get back to you in a second.
00:37:17
Speaker
Okay. She's not texting both of us. but Yeah. Yeah, she is. Yeah. No, she's not. Nope. She's showing, she's typing. Um, okay. and My dad was on TV quite a bit when I was younger, just, he was involved in local politics and stuff. So he would get interviewed and things in the paper. And I was in the paper ah couple of times.
00:37:40
Speaker
Um, I was in the paper a lot as a kid. Yeah. being there I've got to actually, it's right here behind me because my dad was involved in local politics and education. Um, I was in the paper for when, when he voted, he had to vote at my school.
00:37:55
Speaker
So there's a picture of one of my sisters and me and my dad putting his ballot in the box. Oh, that was in the local paper. um and i keep ah Kate was there because they were doing a story about um Texas football, the Selena Bobcats.
00:38:10
Speaker
Hey. So there we go. Um, But yeah, no, I've been in a couple of audiences and things. um My sister was on TV, although you really only saw the back of her head.
00:38:26
Speaker
um I don't know if there was ever an equivalent here, but there was a show in the UK called Fun House. um And it was a teenage show with two two groups or three groups of pairs of teenagers who would have to answer questions.
00:38:41
Speaker
And if they won, they got to run through this. It's basically like a, Not a maze. Like, um yeah you know, they had the houses at theme parks, they have all the mirrors and stuff.
00:38:53
Speaker
But instead of all the mirrors, they have looked lots of little obstacles and hidden in the house were these tokens that if you grab the tokens, you won prizes. So she was, if and if I get this correct, she was selected to do like the dry trial run before it went to air, you know, to make sure everything worked.
00:39:10
Speaker
So she is on the opening, was on the opening credits, like going through one of the obstacles. I think need to reach out to Sally and make sure that that is not just a figment of my childhood imagination.
00:39:22
Speaker
But pretty sure that she did that.
00:39:27
Speaker
But yeah, no, let's see. Duncan does unfortunately break the news to Phoebe that he needs a divorce. um I do quite like when they do this, like, um,
00:39:38
Speaker
Yeah. They did it last episode with Rachel and Monica talking. Yes. Yes. Yes. And even like Joey and Chandler sort almost pretending they're at the bar.
00:39:49
Speaker
Like when they kind of, I'm sure there's a ah good word for it, but um yeah, talking as if it's the opposite, you know, as if he's gay when in fact he's essentially coming out of straight.
00:40:01
Speaker
Well, he is coming out of straight. Um, You're smart and and you throw great Academy Award parties. Right. How can you be straight? It's still so well done. So of its time. They probably wouldn't do that so much now, but perfect for the time that it was ah it was released.
00:40:20
Speaker
um And he's found Deborah and, you know, she wasn't the first. He got drunk and woke up beside a woman in college now and again. um you know, everyone experiments in college and all of that. Really, really funny.
00:40:34
Speaker
Yes. Um, but, um, we bounced from there back over to Ross's apartment and Rachel's doing whatever she can to keep, keep everybody there.
00:40:47
Speaker
You know, who doesn't have time to get to know Julie? Um, all of that. Okay. I have a question for you. Okay. You know, whenever Monica comes back into the room and she's like, it still smells like monkey in there.
00:41:01
Speaker
Is he coming out of the bathroom or Ross's bedroom? Because, ew. That like is a very good question.
00:41:12
Speaker
Like, ew. Ew. Which one is it? I assumed it was the bathroom. Yeah. That's very much just an assumption.
00:41:23
Speaker
Yeah. Well, and that's what I thought too. And then I was like, but I'm pretty sure that that door is is a bedroom but i don't know but it does it cracked me up because i was like gross ross come on yeah that wouldn't be good um yeah but she's trying to do yeah you know really let's break this down if she wants to know about everything from julie's childhood um was it she goes to second grade teacher first grade teacher
00:41:57
Speaker
um anything sorry the dog's barking in the background um you know but as i say i think chandler goes to leave first and then let's see i can't remember quite who else follows him out but he's certainly the one who kind of goes all right go go okay hang on hang on yeah hang on did you have another scene though with phoebe and duncan um no i do we have I have one more where she actually signs the divorce papers.
00:42:32
Speaker
Yes. This one. Oh, okay. So for me, it was between, so like Monica or Rachel says, you know, let's start with your childhood.
00:42:44
Speaker
And then it switches back to Madison square garden, back to Phoebe and Duncan. And she's saying, you know have you told your parents, have you told your parents?
00:42:56
Speaker
And he's like, you know, no, but they're cool. My brother's straight. You're exactly right. That whole conversation. I've written this down in the wrong order. you're You're exactly right. That's the way it is. Okay.
00:43:11
Speaker
And then, you know, they kiss and then she's like, so your brother's straight. And then he's like, ha ha. But then she's like, serious.
00:43:21
Speaker
No, for real. Yeah. That's it. And that was so awkward and so funny. Then it goes back because, you know, now it's well past 1130 this point.
00:43:34
Speaker
And Rachel's just trying to get her to talk about who cares who your second grade teacher is, your first grade teacher.
00:43:47
Speaker
And then Cobb salad. Yeah. What's in a Cobb salad? They just can't cope anymore. oh And it is and its Chandler is like, I'm going home.
00:43:58
Speaker
That's right. He's done. He's done. But ah yeah, they've really the the pivotal moment here is Rachel and Ross in the hallway. And, you know I guess she kind of ends up feeling like she has to take this conversation in another way. um You know, maybe she just has more sympathy for Ross and the situation. Yeah.
00:44:23
Speaker
because she starts off with the whole, yeah, don't you shouldn't do anything, shouldn't do anything, shouldn't do anything, and then kind of gets lost in this. It's almost like a dreamlike delivery she has.
00:44:37
Speaker
um yeah Yeah. What she thinks should happen. i Sorry, what's going with the dogs, but they're just barking away. um But, you know, Roskyn is getting in his head, but then he's all right.
00:44:50
Speaker
It kind of, don't know, it's an interesting scene. um It is. And I was watching that and I'm listening to her talk and, you know, and her, it's interesting because then he closes his eyes. Yeah.
00:45:09
Speaker
And then you're kind of thinking, see, I was wondering if she wasn't trying to get him so look at her some kind of way. That's kind of the way I...
00:45:22
Speaker
I kind of, it was, it's quite vague, I think, but that's kind of the way I interpreted it. Yeah. That's what she was, she was doing. Maybe not just set out to do that, but that's yeah.
00:45:35
Speaker
That's the way I suddenly took it. But then Ross kind of snaps out of it and kind of goes, oh, okay. Or something and just shuts the door. Yeah. See ya. Oh buddy. That's right.
00:45:46
Speaker
Off you go. Yeah. That's where we end up. Yeah. In the final seat where Ross is very, very happy. singing, dancing, um, on top of the world.
00:45:57
Speaker
I did Google the two ladies who were sitting there on the bench. Um, yeah, I couldn't find out who one of them is. And the other one was an actress who did you very small parts really.
00:46:09
Speaker
But, um, the only thing that I say, the only thing, it sounds almost unfair. The thing that jumped out at me from her IMDB, which there's not much on there is that she died when she was, I think 82 of a heart attack in rural India.
00:46:24
Speaker
despite being you know living in Los Angeles and is interned in Los Angeles. But I could assume she was there visiting and then had an untimely end, unfortunately.
00:46:35
Speaker
And that that's tough. Yeah. but yeah, Ross very much ends on ah on a high on this episode, in this episode. um Yeah, so that kind of wraps up this one. Who would be your Gunther Central Park?
00:46:54
Speaker
ah My Gunther's central perk is Rachel. And why would it be Rachel? Because she caught that bird. Not just that.
00:47:06
Speaker
She started off strong in this episode and don't know. She was funny and you know just kind of slight with her you beg you and all of that. It just kind of tickled me.
00:47:21
Speaker
I thought it was funny and then m ah I just, I don't know. And I kind of feel for her, you know?
00:47:32
Speaker
i Yeah. I do. yeah but But I don't know. I just i've just like her a lot in this episode. Yeah. And I completely agree. And that's why I've also gone with Rachel this week.
00:47:47
Speaker
um I had two reasons that came to mind. And the first one was... And this is really more Jennifer Aniston than Rachel Green, I suppose. I had to give her a little credit for having to work with the bird, but that can't be easy.
00:48:02
Speaker
no You know, I don't know how they did it. I don't know what the, you know, and I'd like to dig into that actually. How did they do that? But I thought that's, that's a bit of a pain. So good on her for doing that. And then I did think the acting with Ross in the hallway was really good.
00:48:19
Speaker
yeah You can find yourself getting just sucked into this this moment that they're having, and that's down to her. So, yeah, Rachel as well for me. Yeah.
00:48:30
Speaker
If Rachel is very angrily pouring you cups of coffee as you sit in Central Park, how many is she pouring for you this week? Seven and an espresso shot. Interesting.
00:48:42
Speaker
yeah you I'd be interested to see how many episodes end up with an espresso shot at the end of all of this. Yeah. I like that we introduced that early on because I think it's a very important thing to have.
00:48:54
Speaker
I agree. I also have an espresso shot in mine, but unfortunately, mine is six in an espresso shot. yeah All right. You know what? I thought I liked this episode more than I did.
00:49:06
Speaker
Like I rewatched it and I was like, yeah it to me, it was a little underwhelming from what I haven't seen it in a while. Yeah. Those for me, a bit underwhelming, not bad. And I like Duncan. I think he's a good character.
00:49:19
Speaker
I like the opening scene with the barns. I think that's really funny. There's funny moments. um But, you know, thinking about other ones that I've rated it between a six and a seven, it seems to fit in there.
00:49:31
Speaker
There you go. All right. Yeah. Well, let's see. Next week, we are reviewing the one with five steaks and an eggplant. And I love the fact that I don't actually remember what this one is about.
00:49:44
Speaker
um So I'm quite looking forward to that. I'm sure it'll come right back to me as soon as I start. right There's something nice about firing up the episode on the television and not being sure what one it is.
00:49:59
Speaker
See, and I'm curious if that will affect your overall score at the end. because said Because my my thought was, you know, whenever you said the one where Phoebe's married, I was like, oh yeah, awesome.
00:50:15
Speaker
I love that one. And then I was like, do I love this one? But I do. It's funny. Like there's a lot of, see, I don't know. I like the A storyline with Phoebe.
00:50:28
Speaker
seeie And then um all this stuff with the secrets, like cracks me up. Cracks me up. And then how that's kind of woven through all of that. And I'm like, it's it's not a pivotal episode at all.
00:50:46
Speaker
Like there's no, if if it didn't exist, I don't feel like it would really change a lot of things. Right. Yeah. But have as a standalone episode, like, I really enjoyed it. There's a lot of really good ah things with it.
00:51:03
Speaker
And I don't know why, but that one, like, I remembered that whole episode. So, mm-hmm. Yeah, no, I love it. I think it's good when we have slightly different views of the same episode. Keeps things interesting.
00:51:20
Speaker
But yeah, as we said, next week will be the one with five steaks and an eggplant. But have you got any final thoughts? I think we're we're just about done. Yeah. and No, I sure don't.
00:51:33
Speaker
Yeah. Well, as always, everybody, thank you so much for listening to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast.
