Introduction to Purple Door Podcast
00:00:05
Speaker
Well hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door Podcast of Friends Rewatch Pond. I'm one of your hosts Alistair alongside my good friend Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
Oh, just peachy keen, jelly bean. How are you, Al? Equally so. i don't have I don't have a fun intro. I think we should get one. Yeah. its It's a beautiful day here. So ah happy to have been outside you know for a chunk of the day, but now inside doing this recording.
00:00:36
Speaker
There you go. See you I've been inside all day. Right. You've been having fun. You've been having fun. Yes, but having fun. Absolutely. Yes. Well,
Discussion on "The One with Two Parts, Part One" from Friends
00:00:46
Speaker
excellent. Well, today we are reviewing the one with two parts, part one, which has caused some confusion because on the streaming service, Max, it is split into two episodes, yeah part one and part two, as if they are completely separate.
00:01:03
Speaker
But on the DVD, they just run... one straight into the other. You don't even know where one episode ends and one begins. um So we had to have a bit of discussion about exactly where to stop.
00:01:14
Speaker
um Because... Sorry, go ahead. Whenever Joseph and I were watching it, he watched it with me both times this time. But the first time, probably, i don't know, 40 minutes in, he goes, man, this is a really long episode.
00:01:31
Speaker
I feel like it is. Yeah. Yeah. And then you were like, hey. Right. It's two. It's separate ones. I was like, oh. It's two at one.
00:01:43
Speaker
Okay. Well, we sort of know a little bit NBC at the time that this aired was playing with some different things to promote not only Friends, but some other shows that have some crossovers in the Part 1 and Part
NBC's Strategic Episode Split and Crossovers
00:01:58
Speaker
And we'll have Steve on later. He's going to he's recorded as a segment for us that we will plug in to this episode and our next episode discussing these crossovers. But having this Part 1 and Part 2 was a very deliberate thing on NBC's part, it seems.
00:02:14
Speaker
So we'll kind of explore that as we go through the episode.
Friends Trivia Game Begins
00:02:18
Speaker
But before that, it's time for a round of bamboozled. And I am looking forward to this one even more than normal.
00:02:27
Speaker
So let's see. I've got one, two, three, four, five, six, I think eight questions for you today. Okay. Oh, yeah I've got ever have ten questions written down.
00:02:39
Speaker
That's far too many. oh Okay, I have ten as well, so I wonder if some of ours won't overlap. I am sure they will. Do you want to fire fire away first?
00:02:50
Speaker
Sure. Ursula gives two reasons as to why she works at RIFs. What are they? That is not one of my questions. i know I know one and a half of the answer. Let's see. Okay.
00:03:04
Speaker
She lives nearby. It's near where she lives. And it's a cute apron. Yes, very nice. That's it. And it was something they wear. All right, there.
00:03:15
Speaker
Good. Nice job. These are very important reasons to pick where you were. Indeed. Indeed. Yes. Well, my first one. I was going to say, because I say that facetiously, but I mean...
00:03:31
Speaker
one of the big perks of the school that we worked at together yeah were're the school colors. ah is School colors are important. it's it really ah it It sort of identifies who you are. So it is important.
00:03:44
Speaker
yeah And equally, we live 1.4 miles away from where we work now. So being close to where you work is very important too. so So it's it's quite a nice thing.
00:03:56
Speaker
There you go. but My first question for you is short and sweet. What is Nina's last name? That's my number seven. Like, okay, it's Bookbinder.
00:04:09
Speaker
And what in the heck? That was somebody who was sitting around in in a yeah room or an office and went, her name is Bookbinder. finder, like Doubtfire.
00:04:22
Speaker
Like in Mrs. Doubtfire, how she comes up with Doubtfire. From the newspaper, whatever it is. yeah Yes, yes. And at my Christmas job, whenever we were naming elves, like that was how some of the characters got their names was it was like, uh, no, once but one story specifically was there was a Snapple bottle sitting on the table.
00:04:48
Speaker
And so it was Snapple the Elf. Right. But that was just somebody sitting around going, Nina needs a last name. Right. What can we do? What can we come up with?
00:05:01
Speaker
Yes. All right. All right. Fire away. does Joey think that Ursula likes him whenever he goes back to Ritz?
00:05:13
Speaker
So A, this is not one of my questions. B, Kate decided to come up with questions yesterday, and this was one of them, and I i remember a bit of it again. ah is does he Does she bring him two items of food, but one of them is like four plates of curly fries?
00:05:33
Speaker
Yes, that is one. Is the other ah is the other a lobster or something seafood-ish? No. Seafood-ish. Seafood-ish. A tuna melt. That's it.
00:05:44
Speaker
That's it. I should have remembered. All right. Why can't Carol attend the Lamaze class that she misses? She's stuck at school with a parent thing. Yeah, a parent thing. Yes. Yes.
00:05:59
Speaker
and which And I wondered whenever I heard that I was like ooh You know yeah and i was like I wonder if people who aren't in education would have thought Like picked up the ooh of that Right this is not not a fun way to to stay late Right Okay so whenever Ross says he's off to Lamaze class Chandler's response is hilarious um But he says That ah he's off to what class and where is he going to meet up with Ross later?
00:06:36
Speaker
Yep. I'm off to something and I'll see you in gym. P.E. he So where is he? I've got... can picture the scene. ah Physics.
00:06:50
Speaker
a Close. Earth science. Okay, not far away. Very close. fuck way That was excellent. Okay. All right. What does Phoebe say she would like from Crabtree and Evelyn?
00:07:03
Speaker
Oh, okay. Bath salts. If you can't get my mother here to celebrate my birthday. Right. It was just such an awkward scene.
00:07:16
Speaker
Oh, yeah, Phoebe. All right. Where is the sweater that Joey buys for Ursula from?
00:07:29
Speaker
Again, you and Kate are in a sympathical here. Because she said, where does the big brown bag come from? There you go. I asked him this. yeah He's like, the big brown bag, the big brown bag Right.
00:07:42
Speaker
was like, that's not a store. is Is it Bloomingdale's? It is Bloomingdale's. All right. All right, good. He guessed Macy's. I guessed Macy's first when I was thinking. or i had That was my first thought was Macy's.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yeah, because they have a lot of... and Well, here early in the series, they have a lot of ah comments about Macy's. But later, you know, Rachel goes to work with Transition's over.
00:08:08
Speaker
All that. Yep. But on the side of the big brown bag, it says Bloomingdale. And then in the box later. I didn't catch that. My next question is a dumb one, but we're going to do it regardless. Because you either know it or you don't. When Phoebe meets Helen Hunt's character, what color is the big coffee mug that she's holding?
00:08:32
Speaker
and Yeah. Is it teal or black? It is neither. Oh, dang. It's a bright yellow. Wow. Okay. Yep.
00:08:43
Speaker
I did not know that. Right. Okay. If we we're going to get like that. if we're going to play like that. All right. What brand of clothing is Rachel wearing in the last two scenes that she's in?
00:09:02
Speaker
Brand of clothing? Yes, sir. Wow. Yes, sir.
00:09:08
Speaker
ah Joseph thought I was insane and I was like, no, I am not. Well, let's think. I mean, I'm trying to think of what connection to the show or some.
00:09:19
Speaker
Ralph Lauren. No. No? She is wearing Oshkosh B'Gosh overalls. Oh, remember the overalls now. Neither one of my children have worn since they were four or five years old. But i i was like, I had noticed the first time that I watched that she was in overalls, but that second time I watched, it's got the tag right there.
00:09:47
Speaker
And so if you stop and you look at it, it's Oshkosh. It sure Interesting. Oshkosh overalls. That is a difficult but great question. I like that one.
00:09:59
Speaker
Yeah. And and then we kept watching just to make sure that whenever she went into the hospital... She's still wearing them and that tag's still right there. That's really interesting. always think about product placement and
Character Dynamics: Ross, Carol, and Chandler
00:10:12
Speaker
deliberate, not deliberate, but assume everything is deliberate, surely.
00:10:17
Speaker
Absolutely. Well, there's a lot of names, like name brand things in this episode. Yeah, again, this was a big one for the network, so I'm sure it's not a coincidence.
00:10:28
Speaker
um I will accept one of two answers for this. But when mon when Monica is knitting, what color is the wool? Blue. i I thought blue, Kate was like, is it bluey purple? So I would have accepted that. But blue is what we, all three of us actually agree on that.
00:10:45
Speaker
Could it be on our television that made it look a little purplish? Right. and Well, okay. And so the thing about me is often, unless it is distinctly a purple color,
00:10:58
Speaker
Like distinctly a purple I don't see, i like it's blue Interesting Yeah, I don't know what that is but but Okay So can you Name I have written down three But i think I would Even accept two of the Shows that are in Spanish That is a great question Because one of them I saw But I had no idea what it was
00:11:30
Speaker
One has the character Urkel in it, but I don't know what that show is. Oh, no. See, and this is where I'll throw out the name of a show that I know was big, but it could be the completely wrong show.
00:11:44
Speaker
Full House. So, yes, completely wrong show. However, okay it was part of the Friday night lineup. I can't think what it was called, but like,
00:11:56
Speaker
whatever and it was Full House, Family Matters and then ah you know but it was all the sitcom family shows but Family Matters is that. Family Matters good to know.
00:12:08
Speaker
There was Laverne E. Shirley is that the name of the show? Laverne and Shirley. Okay and then there was one more that I saw that no idea what it was and I even thought about trying to like screenshot it or something but was like I just don't know what it is.
00:12:24
Speaker
Oh, it's the Patty Duke show. Okay. And I figured that I would i would not have guessed that you would know that show, but I loved that show as a kid.
00:12:37
Speaker
My mom, you know, I've told you before about like, I love Lucy and the black and white shows, but um Patty Duke, it was about identical cousins.
00:12:49
Speaker
And so What's funny about that is Patty Duke was one of the very first shows that they did, if it wasn't the first show, where they did the same actress playing different characters in the same scene, which is so funny because that's the way this shows in. alo Again,
00:13:09
Speaker
that same can't be a coincidence Not a coincidence. There's no way. No There's no way. That had to be a thing. That's a great piece. That's a really interesting piece of it. I like that.
00:13:22
Speaker
i would never have caught it. Alright. What this is I think this is an easier one but we'll see. What building does Chandler point at Janina when they're almost caught kissing? The Chrysler building. Yes indeed. Yes. I was going to ask that one but I chose not to.
00:13:38
Speaker
Right. Alright. So there are three different Times that we see Chandler sitting at his desk and he has things on his desk that typically are not on ah desk of a high level executive, which is where he's kind of going.
00:13:59
Speaker
Right. What can you name two of those three things that are kind of front and center while he's at his desk? Is the Magic H-Ball one of them?
00:14:11
Speaker
No. No, because people would have that. And I don't know if that's there yet. I just remember. feet Oh, no, that's another episode. I just remember that's on his desk. Right. There's the ball thing that. That and hu that was that was in his cubicle.
00:14:30
Speaker
And that's what I enjoyed. i enjoyed looking at. The things that are in his office that were in his cubicle before, because that Toronto Blue Jays hat that we talked about. Yes.
00:14:41
Speaker
Last for a time we recorded is in that office. Excellent. On desk behind his desk. Oh, good. I'm glad that made it over. Okay. So he's playing with that ball thing, right? Yes. That's why.
00:14:54
Speaker
That's why. The ball thing.
00:14:59
Speaker
You know, I don't know. I didn't catch ah anything else. Okay. Okay. So he reaches into his desk and pulls out the statue of I think it's a basketball player. Yes, I wondered who that was. Yes.
00:15:14
Speaker
um And then there's a scene where it pans over to him and he's sitting with his hands on his cheeks next to the little cartoon statue of the guy with his hands on his cheeks the exact same way.
00:15:29
Speaker
That's right. I can sort, I can picture it now. That's right. Good, good question. What does Carol compare giving birth to when Ross tries to play giving birth down?
00:15:44
Speaker
Pushing a pot roast out of your nostril. Ding, ding, ding. Yes. That was a funny line. Yes. Okay.
00:16:00
Speaker
What's Mr. Heckles reading at the end? The New York Post. Yes. Very nice. Yes. Nice. Well, I might as well ask you this.
00:16:15
Speaker
What's the headline on the New York Post that Mr. Heckles is reading? gu grilock Gridlock. There we go. Yes.
00:16:24
Speaker
Which is funny quite funny because we've got Doubtfire, Bookbinder and Gridlock. You know, from the story. That's right. Compound words of Google.
00:16:35
Speaker
All right. I've got two left for you, but i think it's your time. Okay. um
00:16:44
Speaker
The couple um that is in the Lamaze class whenever they're going and introducing. Yes.
00:16:55
Speaker
What do you remember about those people? i You know what? I was going to try and remember their names and didn't, but they're having a boy and a girl. And that's the thing I remember.
00:17:08
Speaker
Perfect. OK, I'll take that. JC and Michael Rosen. Rosen. ah Again, that's not a common name. I wonder where these things come from.
00:17:19
Speaker
I'm surprised. that so I thought you would have asked this question. and you submit It might be your last one. what to what ah Who was on the thermos that Ursula broke?
00:17:30
Speaker
It belonged to Phoebe. Judy Jetson. Yes. How random. Like, why would you have a Judy Jetson thermos? I had Strawberry Shortcake.
00:17:42
Speaker
Good for you. Yes. And then I had another one. I think it was Care Bears. Nice. But, like, Judy Jetson just seems like a very obscure character. Right. But I don't know.
00:17:55
Speaker
Okay, I jumped around, so... Hang on.
00:18:03
Speaker
Oh, no! think I'm all done, actually, because okay we both had the same... yeah. Yes. Same question. So, okay. So I'm all done. Do you have one more? I've got one more. Might as well fire this one out. Let's do it.
00:18:18
Speaker
So Rachel at the end is taking down the Christmas lights. Yes. On the strand of lights, there are four colors of light. What are the four colors? And it's nothing obscure.
00:18:30
Speaker
No. Yeah. So I would imagine red, blue, green. You're three for three. Orange.
00:18:41
Speaker
white day white sophon ah so so close three out four that's a passing grade in my book that's not bad i i'll take it i will take it well that was awesome well let's dive right on in then the one with two parts part one i think that's what it is actually called yeah the one with two parts what a weird thing but Yeah, I'm really excited to hear everything that Steve has to share.
Upcoming Segment: NBC Crossover Tease
00:19:08
Speaker
I've intentionally not gone too deep.
00:19:11
Speaker
Yes. Because I want to, like, listen to his stuff and be like, God, Steve. and, you know, he and I had a very sort of surface-level conversation about it, and I don't want to know anymore. I want to listen as the listeners do, you know, just hear his sound bites he's going to send in.
00:19:28
Speaker
have one question. yeah Sorry, so I have one question and it's actually from Joseph. What does anus stand for? We talked about Venus last time and I lost.
00:19:41
Speaker
It is annual net usage systems. Statistics. Statistics. Oh, so close. Yes, yes. Nice. Sorry. No, quite all right.
00:19:52
Speaker
joseph Joseph can jump in through anytime he wants. That's fantastic. Well, we start off in riffs and it's Joey and Chandler. They're waiting for service and they're pretty sure they see Phoebe.
00:20:04
Speaker
But as we found out, it's ah it's not Phoebe, which is a very awkward moment, you know, because I guess they don't know she's a twin yet. Like that doesn't cross anybody's mind.
00:20:18
Speaker
Right. I couldn't remember if they knew. don't think don't think so either. Uh-uh. Because it, yeah, no, I think this is like the first time we found that out.
00:20:31
Speaker
Right. But it makes me, like well, anyway, yeah. It's weird. Yeah, it's weird. And I'm looking forward to, again, once I've listened to Steve's summary of what's going on, I'm going to try and find Mad about you.
00:20:46
Speaker
um to watch it. I hear it's very good. yeah Just not seen it. um Kate was a big fan. ah but So the riff scene at the beginning is quite quick. We jump right over to Central Park and Ross is complaining, we'll pretend to be shocked, about Marcel ah raising messages and peeing on the crossword in the newspaper.
00:21:06
Speaker
um And Joey and Chandler are discussing a Phoebe and Ursula look alike from outside. Okay, hang on. Let's rewind to that for just a minute. Okay, but go ahead. Because right before they cut out to those guys.
00:21:19
Speaker
Yes. You know, and Ross, you know, order o but then he says, and, you know I'm not sure what he did, but there were capers everywhere. That's right. And Joseph's like, why would there be capers everywhere? And I was like, do you know why? Capers?
00:21:41
Speaker
No. I better Google a picture before I say this, because I mean, not that anybody would be shocked if I made a mistake. And I've actually been very surprised. No, I'm right.
00:21:52
Speaker
Okay. It's poop. He's pooped little balls everywhere. Really? Uh-huh. Because, they I mean, they're not poop.
00:22:03
Speaker
But ah capers, they're very, very salty. Very salty. But they look like little balls. And so... I'm like, how stupid.
00:22:15
Speaker
Right. ah Where would he have gotten capers to be throwing around everywhere? Right. It's not the kind thing you have sitting out. Yeah. But yeah, they're like little greenish brownish balls.
00:22:28
Speaker
Interesting. Like, yeah. And they're just in a jar, right? Yeah. yeah Yeah. They're away in the cupboard somewhere. That was, that was something was definitely, we saw for the first time yesterday. That's not in the streaming, that whole bit.
00:22:42
Speaker
Oh, really? Yeah, the whole newspaper and capers thing. um and Well, certainly the capers. I think it might start with Joey and Chandler being outside.
00:22:56
Speaker
ah I might be wrong, but certainly not as much of Ross complaining about Marcel. Weird. Yeah, again, it's just these little snippets. Well, okay, so i'm I've had to pull up i'll pull up the thing.
00:23:12
Speaker
But yeah, that line isn't even in there. Like it's not blue. Right. So that's weird. Yeah. We'll have to just keep a track of these things about the differences again.
00:23:24
Speaker
um But yeah, so they've decided Joey thinks that Phoebe's Phoebe, but Ursula's hot, even though, of course, they're literally identicals, the same person. Right. Which we'll get to.
00:23:38
Speaker
um But, you know, but the Phoebe, obviously a little shocked, you know, asks if she's now fat.
00:23:46
Speaker
She's thrilled that they've met Arsala. Okay. Go ahead. It makes me laugh. Like, why on earth did she guess Liam Neeson?
00:23:58
Speaker
Right. yeah You know, like, what? Right. And Liam Neeson, and then I to Google the other guy, she said. Yes. It was like a broadcaster of some sort. of Yeah. and use name from something From Canada.
00:24:10
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Yeah. Just these random, random things. Yes. um But. and Go ahead. good oh it's good say you say As we know, these things are probably not as random as we think. Exactly.
00:24:25
Speaker
Exactly. But yeah, have Ross has to leave. He's going to his Lamaze class. um He's trying to act cool and calm, but puts on Monica's jacket accidentally. I was going to ask you what color her jacket was if it hadn't already got a huge stack. up Yeah, there you go. A stack massive stack of questions for you.
00:24:42
Speaker
That was going to be there. And that jacket is so cute. but You like the jacket jacket? Yes, I like the jacket. Good to know. Good to know. it's a I don't think Ross didn't put on his own jacket afterwards, and what did he? had to be He grabbed it.
00:24:59
Speaker
He just grabbed it. He set his back on the back of that chair and grabbed his. That's right. Well, then we we do go over to the Lamaze class, the first of a few times, I believe, we we see this.
00:25:11
Speaker
And Ross struggles to introduce the the parenting team. that they have going on here. He doesn't know what to call Carol and Susan. And yeah ah it's very funny. i hate that The only thing I disliked was that little line of, oh, you know how close women can get?
00:25:28
Speaker
To me, it sounded a bit kind of condescending almost or something, but it's probably just me. I just didn't like that line. But very funny the way he gets flustered and doesn't know what to say or introduce Carol and Susan.
00:25:43
Speaker
Yeah. um Let's see. Yeah, that's where we meet at least at least the one other couple. i don't I don't know if we meet any of the others that are in the room. um Just that other family.
00:25:56
Speaker
Just that first couple, don't we? Yeah. We now bump over, I think, to Chandler's new fancy office, and we meet Nina. Do you know in real life who Nina's โ what's it her name? Suddenly escaped me.
00:26:10
Speaker
ah Nina's dad is in real life. No, I have. No, I mean, why would you, I suppose? Well, she's Jennifer Grant and her dad is Cary Grant. Oh, wow. Yeah, like the famous Cary Grant.
00:26:25
Speaker
Yeah, which surprised me. Yeah, me too. Yeah, sometimes when I try to look these, you know, just quickly look at these people up. She's been in a few bits and pieces. But yeah, Cary Grant, so kind of famous for being his daughter.
00:26:41
Speaker
um that Chandler says she's been post-dating some numbers. I've got a bit of a problem with Nina here because I believe this is the scene where she kind of goes, oh, should I not be doing that? And she puts like her hand on his thigh.
00:26:56
Speaker
Yeah. Like in what world? Even if you don't have to be fine. Is it later? Okay. It is. No, this is whenever she makes the comment about his weeners.
00:27:10
Speaker
That's right. That's right. Yes. Later on. had Yeah. In what world is that okay to do? Like, no, no, that's yeah.
00:27:23
Speaker
Just don't do that. Don't do that at all. Right. Yeah. um Hey, fun fact. She was on 90210. Right. And she was Celeste.
00:27:35
Speaker
And I remember Celeste, she dated Brandon. Right, okay. She was on a bunch of episodes in one of the very first seasons.
00:27:45
Speaker
So anyway, but yeah, I never i would never would have thought she was Cary Grant's daughter. Yeah, it's an interesting thing. But yeah, she is a little too familiar because who would talk to their boss like that?
00:28:01
Speaker
Right, and unless there's been lots of flirting beforehand. and things I don't think there has been. No, it's completely out of line, I think. But we bounce back over to the girls' apartment. they They're eating some Chinese food, and Chandler's discussing the situation, which again makes me think there's been nothing previously going on discussing this flirting with Nina.
00:28:24
Speaker
And then Marcel changes the language on the TV to Spanish using that SAP function, which ends up being great. um Rachel, poor Rachel's forgotten. Well, not poor Rachel.
00:28:35
Speaker
Rachel has forgotten to take down the Christmas tree lights. um Tries to blame Monica for not putting a note on the fridge. But Monica being Monica is organized and has.
00:28:47
Speaker
that That has been done. um i always try to look at the fridge because there's a couple of pictures on it, but it's always too fuzzy to see what it is. Yeah.
00:28:59
Speaker
but Again, um I'm going to guess it's maybe cast members, family or something um on the fridge. um Joey comes in says that Arsala definitely likes him. The tuna melt and the curly fries, as you tested me on.
00:29:14
Speaker
um chanddler Chandler being a good friend here. I'm waiting for you to sneeze.
00:29:23
Speaker
It went away. it might sell so it when you to so good for you. look at it That's a professional move. I would panic and not know where the mute button is. There it is. I see it now. I would panic.
00:29:35
Speaker
ah Good for you. Well done. And then I went and brought it up. ah But yes, I think it's it's sort of a role reversal because maybe Joey's not being as good a friend as he has been in the past and is in the future.
00:29:47
Speaker
And Chandler kind of steps in and says, hey, you need to talk to her.
00:29:54
Speaker
Man. Yeah. I mean, I kind of see both sides of it. gay he's du He's done nothing wrong. um I think Chandler's making sure he stays in line before he does. i think he says do something Joey like.
00:30:06
Speaker
Yeah. And this is totally something that Joey would have a problem with. Right. yeah Totally something that is against the code.
00:30:18
Speaker
Right. That we just heard about like not that long you ago. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, indeed. point joey You know, pmebe Phoebe says it's OK, but you can tell that obviously it's not really. But Joey is just, I think, laser focused on she said yes.
00:30:36
Speaker
So that's that. But I think if you read The Room at all, if you read her expressions, you know this is going to be a bad idea. Yes. um yeah But we'll see how that plays out shortly. But we do end up bouncing back over to the Lamaze class where Ross and Susan show up and Carol can't make it.
00:30:56
Speaker
um I do like this little interaction between them. I quite like Susan I've not really been to endeared towards at this point. yes I don't dislike her. but no I quite like the coin flipping and then on your back mum line.
00:31:12
Speaker
um where they're kind of trying to figure out who's going to be the coach and stuff. um so i quite I quite like that little interaction between the two of them.
00:31:24
Speaker
who Yeah. yeah and I don't know. it Whenever we get to the the lines at the very, whenever it starts getting close to the end, we'll talk some more about Susan.
00:31:40
Speaker
and Because Yeah, this is probably the first episode where I'm just like, I like her. yeah Right. I'm like, okay, okay.
00:31:53
Speaker
Yeah, she's not pushing Ross away at this point, which and um again she maybe wasn't before. It was just. He was just kind of there on the side. Yeah.
00:32:03
Speaker
Yeah, whenever she's you know, she tried to kind of push him out whenever he came into the Lamaze class, you know, and she was like, well, you can leave. I'll get the information. That's right. That's right. And, you know, and whenever, and maybe because she, was she doesn't know Ross, you know, so maybe she doesn't trust him yet. And, you know, nobody wants somebody who's going to come in and go out of their kid's life, you know?
00:32:30
Speaker
Right. Yeah. They're just, they're doing the dance, aren't they? They don't really know. what to make of each other i think at this point yeah so neither one of them chose the other one right and yet they're going to be in each other's life forever so right yeah they gotta figure this out to do the dance and um yeah they seem to be doing all right at this point um We bounce back over to Chandler's office.
00:33:00
Speaker
I can't remember the name of his... I'm assuming it's his boss, um the guy who comes in. that Big Al? Is that him? Is that him? I don't know. know, I think Big Al might have been Mr. Costalick, whatever it was in the last episode. Oh, okay. I think.
00:33:18
Speaker
I think. Um... But this guy comes in and says they haven't had an anus this bad since the 70s, if I recall. These funny kind of acronyms. um wait Wait a minute. It's Mr. Douglas. It's Mr. Douglas. douglas That rings a bell now. Yes.
00:33:37
Speaker
Okay. ah Hang on. I'll ask you whenever we get to the next scene. I'm sorry. No, you're fine. But it made me laugh whenever he was like, that's why my name's on the door.
00:33:49
Speaker
Yes. When are we going to get that done? Yeah, that was funny. Yeah, that was a funny, funny little moment. And then, yeah, and then he just kind of mumbles like, oh, I ordered it from the thing or I talked to the person. I don't remember exactly what it was.
00:34:07
Speaker
Yeah, he kind of dismisses it, doesn't they Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. I remember that. he says that he's going to have to start, going to have to fire people. And he asks him if he's ever fired people before. That's right. That's why his name's on the door.
00:34:20
Speaker
Um, has to fire Nina. Nina crosses the line. If she wasn't going to get fired before, she should have for that. Um, but, uh, yeah, we mosey back to central park and Rachel Phoebe are discussing her birthday and that's what she, if she wants something from crab tree and Evelyn, um,
00:34:39
Speaker
And then this is where I should have done some digging, but I didn't want to. Because I know it's Helen Hunt who walks in. But yeah i'm ah I'm guessing the friend is also on Mad About You. But I don't i didn't recognize that lady.
00:34:51
Speaker
Okay, she is. And here is something interesting. And I don't know, and it may not be connected, but I feel like most of the time, whenever these things happen, they are connected.
00:35:03
Speaker
So the friend's name is Fran. Ah, okay. Now, at the end of the last episode, whenever Chandler was like, whoa, after he freaked out, yelling about the weenus and all that, he's on the phone with Fran.
00:35:23
Speaker
So he is. Yes. So I'm curious if it's not the same Fran, because like how many Frans are there? Right. And in this specific universe,
00:35:35
Speaker
But like, I have known exactly one Fran ever in my entire life. Right. Which is one more than me. Well, there you go. I mean, I don't feel like that's a typical name anything.
00:35:49
Speaker
I'm going to ask Steve, if he's not already, to look into that. You know, what's Fran's profession in Mad About You? Like, do we know? Yeah. Is something, did some corporate something or other?
00:36:01
Speaker
Yeah, because I wonder if it's not the same. that he was, er he was having the conversation with at the end of the last episode. Right. And that's a very good thought.
00:36:13
Speaker
Um, So we'll leave that scene up to Steve to talk about it a bit. um but Back in the girls' apartment, Monica is knitting, talking to Chandler about this relationship with Nina what to do. Rachel's there, of course.
00:36:27
Speaker
And then Mr. Heckles comes and knocks on the door, complaining about the noise. Crazy Mr. Heckles. Although I don't think we... do they Maybe they do say his Yeah, this one they say his name. They didn't before with Paolo.
00:36:39
Speaker
He wasn't Mr. Heckles yet. No. He's saying his cats can't sleep because of the noise. um I do love this sort trend of his to make up things that he doesn't do or doesn't have.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yeah. Well, and it's interesting because he said that that was his cat. Paulo's cat was his cat. And then he's saying my cats can't sleep. And you don't even have cats.
00:37:04
Speaker
I could. Yeah. So what causes him to get this? He's such strange guy. um I wanted to ask you about this. So Joey starts talking about that he's got um tickets to the ice capades, which I do love Chandler's line.
00:37:21
Speaker
you going to tell me? Yes. Oh, where he says about, like, I've never known you to spend any money on any capades. Yes. Okay. So I had a theory I wanted to run by you.
00:37:34
Speaker
okay And I haven't looked this up, so it might be absolute nonsense. But if Joey took Ursula to the ice capades, is it possible, spoiler alert, they see Phoebe's husband dancing on the ice?
00:37:49
Speaker
I wondered cause that, That's the only time that ice capades comes up. Like, that jogged my memory, because i was like, oh! I don't even remember what that guy's name is, but I wonder if it's not the same.
00:38:05
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. It would have been really interesting. And then of course, Ursula probably wouldn't recognize him because she probably didn't know that Phoebe got married. But then if he saw Ursula, it could have been a fun thing.
00:38:19
Speaker
um Oh, uh-huh. Yeah. Could have gotten a bit, a bit sticky in there. Um, Well, Chandler and Nina certainly move things forward forward because they're making out in his office when the boss comes in.
00:38:32
Speaker
And Nina makes an excuse. I don't quite remember, but leaves. And Chandler basically says that she's crazy. So yeah after he fired her, the psychiatrist called.
00:38:45
Speaker
um I don't understand that line, even though it's really funny, the way Chandler goes. I guess that's why they call it psychiatry, sir. But it's just funny. The way delivers it is funny.
00:38:55
Speaker
It is funny and it makes no sense whatsoever. right And that was one of the lines Joseph says, he's like, what does that even mean? Like nothing. Yeah, right. It's just nothing.
00:39:07
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I didn't get it, but it was really quite funny. um Yeah, just that. And then I was quite, I was quite proud of myself with this catch potentially in the next scene. Again, we're jumping back to the Lamaze class.
00:39:21
Speaker
Ross steps on the baby. i think this scene maybe steps on the baby. He has the toy baby in his hand, yeah the doll. And he kind of says, go deep to Susan.
00:39:32
Speaker
And he has, it I think it's the next episode, or certainly coming up soon, he has a nightmare about playing football with his baby. Yes, it's in the very next one. Okay, it is the next one. So I thought that was quite fun to tie that in between the two episodes.
00:39:50
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, the reality is setting in for Carol at this point, though, isn't it? it Uh-huh. Yeah. what did you What did you take from this scene? Okay, so this scene, that's whenever she says, um you know, that the big picture is that whenever it's all over, we're going to be parents for the rest. We're all going to be parents for the rest of our lives.
00:40:14
Speaker
And she is including Ross in that. because That's a good point. Otherwise, she'd just say, we are going to be. Right. It's not, we're all going to be parents for the rest of our lives.
00:40:27
Speaker
And then, you know, that just kind of shocked Ross, you know, because that's how we transition into that next scene. Right. But I was, I liked that because I, it, it kind of shows that,
00:40:44
Speaker
ah Susan's accepting the fact that Ross is going to be there and going to be a part of this. And she's accepting him into that circle, yeah yeah into that family.
00:40:56
Speaker
yeahs There's no reason to try to push him out. I'm sure Carol has defended Ross too, Susan. um So I'm glad that they're all sort of getting on the same page at this point.
00:41:08
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes, yes. um Let's see, where are we? I've suddenly lost my track. There we are, jumping back over to Central Park. And Ross is indeed panicking a bit about he suddenly realised he's going to have a son.
00:41:20
Speaker
um You know, and I think cha Chandler, if I remember rightly, is very reassuring to him that he's, you he's responsible. He's going to be fine. Trying to kind of calm Ross down a bit.
00:41:34
Speaker
um Joey is, ah I think, about to work with Ursula. I think I've not written this down what actually happens, but i think, or maybe Joe says. Yeah, Joey's going out with Ursula, and then Phoebe's asking how serious it is.
00:41:53
Speaker
Right. right that's That's right. If it's like together yet and things. Right, I do love the next scene. i do love any time Chandler becomes a little unhinged and starts to panic. And here we go again when um Nina doesn't understand why people are... and those They took her scissors away and then they... Are they staring at her?
00:42:15
Speaker
I didn't write it down, but they're doing something to make her think. Yeah, she's what she's avoiding her and looking strangely at her and then they've taken in all of the... All of her...
00:42:29
Speaker
scissors that's right and then he proposes right just he's all over the place his grand plan that wasn't so grand is falling apart at this point in very Chandler-esque fashion he didn't really yeah it's just it's all going south quickly And then as we find out in the next scene, he's back in the girl's apartment and confesses that he had to tell Nina everything. And I guess she whacked the stapler off his hand as it was on the desk.
00:43:04
Speaker
Which, you know, don't know. That's something that Joseph wanted me to ask you is what happened to Chandler's hand. Right. yeah So maybe maybe she maybe she does have some issues because...
00:43:17
Speaker
You know, the inappropriate touching and then the weapon with the stapler. The inappropriate comments. The comments, yes. The inappropriate touching. And then, like, who does that?
00:43:29
Speaker
Right. yeah And even when he proposed, she sort of smiled a bit before the scene cut off. Like, no, no, you would, I would hope, walk out the door. But I think maybe she's, yeah, something going on there with Nina as well.
00:43:47
Speaker
um Let's see. So I do. So let's see. Staples are hand. Yeah. Monica is trying to sort fix the TV. I do quite like this and we'll get into this maybe a little later. but Phoebe explains to Joey why she's upset. And I think we see another side of Phoebe here, not just the sort of the ditzy hippie, whatever she, whatever she is, but she really opens her heart up to Joey. She wanted, I think, to be okay with this, but yeah but she just isn't. Poor old Phoebe.
00:44:18
Speaker
yeah she's you know i really felt for her in this episode yes and i thought it was sweet whenever she was talking about um randy brown she you know have you ever had friend that or a boyfriend that was also your best friend and and they're all like yeah now no no no well she did good old randy brown motion But he didn't want to have anything to do with either one of them.
00:44:48
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. That was sad. Sad for her. I'm proud of her that she decided going to go talk to Joey. And of course that doesn't quite go to plan because there is Ursula opening the door and they're face to face with each other in the hallway.
00:45:04
Speaker
um And on the TV, that's where it kind of plays the outro music. you know the credits start to roll not of the d on the it just keeps on keeps trucking along and then as the credits roll this is where we end up on the balcony Rachel is taking down the lights I mean what is she thinking she's basically I mean that's just how many floors it's got to be eight nine ten floors she's bouncing on the edge and Of course, it's television. But had she not caught her legs in the ah in the light, I assume she would have met an untimely death by falling all the way down.
00:45:43
Speaker
So what's she doing climbing up on the side like that? Well, and I don't know. i don't know that. I mean, i know she's a little lady and all that, but I have a hard time believing that that's only as far as she would have fallen.
00:46:02
Speaker
Absolutely. like You know what I mean? Like, that seems kind of silly. I know. And then does Mr. Heckles not have a balcony? Like, why right ah why is she hanging the way that she's hanging and close enough to be able to knock on that window?
00:46:20
Speaker
Yes, his window must come farther out. Now, I'm overthinking and mixed in the way. us. But, yeah, never.
00:46:31
Speaker
But, like, I don't understand and the logistics of how that would work because if she fell over the balcony and went down, she would either and up falling past his balcony, but she is kind of hanging there. Yeah.
00:46:51
Speaker
Absolutely. It doesn't make sense. And we know that he's only one row down. And then... how strong are Christmas light chords? Right.
00:47:02
Speaker
I've never tried to hang from one. Yeah. And then, and there, I don't know. It seems like I could see like if just all of them like popping off.
00:47:14
Speaker
Right. Yeah, exactly. It'd be a bit slapstick, there some sort of, yeah. Right. Oh, and this was definitely slapstick, like all of that. Right. But yeah, I don't know the logistics of all that.
00:47:28
Speaker
And then, I i don't know, and then it's her ankle that's hurt, and I'm imagining that she's hanging by the ankle. i don't know. Right. And we find out what the... It also explains why she's in the Oshkosh-Bagosh overall, because she was going to end up hanging upside down, and if she wasn't in Oshkosh-Bagosh overall, her shirt would have fallen.
00:47:54
Speaker
very good point yeah right she had to be in a suitable uh some suitable clothing for that right and and you know she wears overalls a few other times in the series because it's just cute but um i think that was a very uh specific wardrobe choice knowing that yeah it must have been they must have thought that one thought that one through Well, yeah, this episode on Macs or streaming ends there. so we'll we'll sort of press pause on the episode review and then we'll pick it up and and in our next episode.
00:48:30
Speaker
um Even though on the DVD it is all running together. So at this moment, we're going to take a small pause in the show to welcome in Steve. Because Steve has done some research. We love Steve. Good old Steve.
NBC Crossover Impact Discussion with Steve
00:48:44
Speaker
and Steve even said we really should call him Steve. Like they do in the right. Steve at the beginning. Sorry, Steve. um He is going to talk to us and talk to you a little bit now about the Mad About You and NBC crossovers that happened when this episode was live on air.
00:49:03
Speaker
Here you go, Steve.
00:49:06
Speaker
Hi, Steve here from We're Listening to Frasier Podcast. Alistair reached out and asked me to talk about the cameo in this episode from Helen Hunt. Helen appears as Jamie Buckman, her character from Mad About You. It's a beautiful little crossover.
00:49:19
Speaker
ah Mad About You ran from 1992 to 1999, seven successful seasons. ah In this episode, you'll see Jamie and her friend Fran enter Central Perk. They try and order a coffee from Phoebe, which is interesting, because they actually confuse her for Phoebe's twin sister, Ursula, who's played by Lisa Kudrow in Mad About You.
00:49:38
Speaker
Ursula is a character that's in a few episodes of Mad About You as a waitress, um which is why this confusion happens. However, Phoebe never was supposed to have a sister, unfortunately.
00:49:49
Speaker
Only because of Ursula being played by Lisa Kudrow, Mad About You, did the Friends writers think it might be quite fun to then bring in this twin sister. So we have a lovely little collision of worlds here. The Friends universe is opened up into being in the same place and the same world as as Mad About You.
00:50:06
Speaker
That's not the only time that Mad About You has a crossover. There's a really nice episode of Mad About You in Season 1, Episode 8, The Apartment, where Paul, Jamie's husband, um basically goes back to his old apartment, who he leases to Cosmo Kramer of Seinfeld.
00:50:20
Speaker
So worlds do collide.
00:50:24
Speaker
Well, thank you, Steve, for all that information. And we look forward to hearing um more next week as we see a couple of other characters from another show that was on NBC at the same time.
00:50:36
Speaker
So thank you again, Steve. Steve will certainly be joining us for an episode n season who I believe. I'm trying to remember the one where nobody's ready. I'm going to give that little secret.
00:50:51
Speaker
but Season 3, episode 2. That is his favourite episode of all time. I don't think he'll mind me saying that. So he'll certainly be back joining D&I for that. But let's see. Do you have a Gunther Central part from this episode?
00:51:06
Speaker
Okay, so I had a really hard time with this one. I really did. because there wasn't anybody like Chandler. I, he's so funny, but I was like, gosh.
00:51:20
Speaker
And then, and you know, don't know. It felt bad for Phoebe. I didn't feel like Joey made the best choices. Um, Rachel is, you know, she's just kind of there in this episode.
00:51:36
Speaker
Right. And, um, Monica's just kind of hanging out. And so, um, um hu It's tough. So now now that I have said all of that, i want it i was going to say, I know, Ross.
00:51:55
Speaker
But I actually think that it's Susan. That's a great thought. She actually didn't really cross my mind going into this, but she should have. she Well, and she didn't cross mine because I have Ross written down. Right. um But I'm going to go with Susan.
00:52:14
Speaker
Because I appreciate that end where she's like, okay, like, Ross is a part of this. We're all going be yes parents for the rest of our lives and um all of that. So I'm going to go with Susan.
00:52:31
Speaker
I think that's a great choice. I like that one. I think so, too. And that makes me feel better. Right, good. Well, I, as I've sort of hinted at earlier, I've ended up choosing Phoebe because I do love seeing this other side of her character where she's struggling with trying to be a good friend to Joey, but her unresolved issues, I'm sure, with Ursula and kind of opening her heart up a bit, being a bit vulnerable. That's not the usual sort of airy-fairy Phoebe we see.
00:52:59
Speaker
So for that reason, I'm definitely going with Phoebe this week. okay which is is only maybe the second maybe the second or third time I've chosen her. So glad to give Phoebe another nod.
00:53:13
Speaker
There you go. and then I do like some Phoebe. Good. And then how many cups of coffee would you give this episode? I struggled. was going back and forth between six and seven.
00:53:27
Speaker
Right. So I am going to go with six and an espresso. Okay, I like that. I like it when we do that. um For me, I think it's a solid six.
00:53:38
Speaker
i There's nothing that particularly jumps out at me. Again, funny moments. But um but all again, all Friends episode episodes have funny moments. There's very few that i simply don't like.
00:53:51
Speaker
So it's going to be a solid six for me. There's much funnier ones in this season that we've already talked about and some coming up, I think. So... So I think it's definitely a six.
00:54:05
Speaker
Okay. All right. I feel confident with my six in an espresso because the one with the stoned guy, was going back and forth between six and seven, and I went with seven, and I definitely don't feel like this episode is on par with the with the Right.
Episode Ratings and Comparisons
00:54:22
Speaker
That's kind of what I'm doing too. I'm looking back now and kind of going, all right, what other ones did I give whatever score to? And I have noticed that you've been doing that. So that's why I'm like, okay, let's go back and double check.
00:54:35
Speaker
Yeah, I've just got my piece of paper here. That's it. Well, on that note, I think it's fairly self-explanatory that next week we're going to be looking at the one with two parts, part two.
00:54:47
Speaker
What? ah Yeah, shocked. We'll be doing that. But before we sign off, any final thoughts? oh No, I'm excited. To go ahead and talk about part two and the extra characters that popped in and all of that.
00:55:05
Speaker
i'm ah I'm excited about that because, yeah, it was hard to kind of cut these this one giant episode into two because i watched it as one giant as one giant i didn't realize the last night there was one giant one so yeah lots of fun well remember listeners um check out uh the purple podcast facebook group uh club club not group uh purple podcast club right i've suddenly it's got my head door door cat goodness me
