Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida: https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading comes to us from the Book of Jonah and 2 Kings Chapter 14:25. Today we will read the story of Jonah and see him try to run away from God, not wanting to bring a message of repentance to Nineveh because he knew God would be compassionate, kind, loving, slow to anger, and forgiving of the people and he didn't want the people to be forgiven. He wanted them to receive judgment for their sins. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being like Jonah ourselves, trying to run away from God when we don't want to deal with something and wanting people to get what they deserve, rather than desiring to be compassionate and forgiving toward people. We will talk about Jesus showing compassion for those who were hurting him on the cross, praying for God to forgive them because they didn't know what they were doing. We will read God tell Jonah today that He has a right to be compassionate on people and animals, too, because He made them!! We will read 1 Peter 3:8-9  today, being reminded that God does not act slowly as we understand slowness, but God is compassionate, slow to anger, desiring ALL PEOPLE to come to repentance; He doesn't want anyone to perish in His great judgment! We will be reminded of our recent reading in Joel, where God tells us that even in the last days people can still come to Him! God desires mercy! He is so merciful and compassionate and forgiving of us. He sent Jesus to die for all of our sins so that everyone who believes in Him will not die, but have eternal life with Him. Let's tell everyone about our loving, kind, compassionate, forgiving, patient God who loves us and wants us to come to Him and be saved!

Introduction to the Book of Jonah

00:01:44
Speaker
We are going to pick up today in the book of Jonah. We read at the end of yesterday's reading that Jonah was the prophet during King Jeroboam II.
00:01:57
Speaker
And now we're going to hear from Jonah. Most of us are pretty familiar with the story of Jonah, but i there are some parts that I especially love about this story. And we'll talk about that afterwards.
00:02:09
Speaker
There were so many things for daily application. I had to record this again. I was like, oh man, I forgot to talk about that. Ah, I can't believe I forgot that. There was so much good stuff.
00:02:20
Speaker
So that's why I'm hurrying through this here. ah Not only is it my second recording, but there's just so much to talk about. I don't want it to be too long. it gets It gets so long, but there is so much good stuff in God's Word.
00:02:32
Speaker
I could just go on about it, but I have to keep it to a short length here. All right.

Jonah's Story and Its Lessons

00:02:40
Speaker
So our first chapter in Jonah is entitled The Storm.
00:02:46
Speaker
God told Jonah, go to the big city of Nineveh. I see very sinful people there. Tell them they are in trouble. But Jonah ran away.
00:02:59
Speaker
He went down to the sea, and there he saw a ship that would be sailing soon. So he paid for a ride and got on the ship. Jonah was trying to run away from God.
00:03:14
Speaker
The ship sailed out to sea and then God sent a strong wind. A storm blew in. The storm was bad and the sailors thought that the ship was going to break apart.
00:03:26
Speaker
They were scared and they prayed to their fake gods. Then they started throwing things into the sea and that would help keep the ship from being so heavy. But Jonah was down in the bottom of the ship and he was sleeping there.
00:03:42
Speaker
At last, the captain of the ship woke Jonah up. How can you sleep? He asked. Get up, pray to your God. Maybe your God will see our trouble and maybe we won't die.
00:03:57
Speaker
Let's throw dice, said the sailors, and let's see who is to blame for this storm.
00:04:03
Speaker
So they threw dice and the dice showed that Jonah was the one to blame for the storm. Who made all this trouble? They asked Jonah. Who are you?
00:04:13
Speaker
Where did you come from? I'm a Jewish man, said Jonah, and I worship God. He made the sky, the sea, and the land. The sailors got very scared.
00:04:28
Speaker
What did you do? They asked. Jonah had already told them he was running away from God. and All this time, the waves tossed higher and higher.
00:04:40
Speaker
How can we make the sea quiet again? Asked the sailors. Throw me into the sea, said Jonah. Then the sea will be quiet again, and that's because I am to blame for this storm.
00:04:54
Speaker
The sailors began rowing and they tried to get the ship back to land, but the waves got higher and higher. So they called to God. Don't blame us for killing this man, they said.
00:05:07
Speaker
Then they threw Jonah into the sea. the sea became quiet again. The sailors were afraid of God. They offered gifts to him, and they made promises to him.
00:05:23
Speaker
Now God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah, so there Jonah was inside the fish, and he was there for three days and nights.
00:05:34
Speaker
Chapter 2, Deep Water and Seaweeds
00:05:39
Speaker
Jonah prayed to God from inside the fish. I was in a lot of trouble, said Jonah. I went into the middle of the sea. All the waves rushed over me.
00:05:51
Speaker
The water brought danger. Deep water came around me. Seaweeds waved around my head. I dropped down to the very bottom of the mountains.
00:06:02
Speaker
The sea floor held me forever. But you saved me from death, God. My life was coming to an end, but I remembered you.
00:06:14
Speaker
I prayed to you. People who worship idols, give up your kind love. I will sing a song of thanks. I will keep my promise.
00:06:26
Speaker
God is the one who saves. Then God told the fish to spit Jonah out onto dry land.
00:06:35
Speaker
Chapter 3, The King's Order. God spoke to Jonah again. Go to the big city of Nineveh. Tell them what I will do because of their sin.
00:06:48
Speaker
This time Jonah obeyed God. He went to Nineveh. Nineveh was a big, important city. It took three days to walk around the city.
00:06:59
Speaker
and Jonah called out, Nineveh has only 40 more days. Then the city will be destroyed. The people believed God.
00:07:11
Speaker
They did not eat. They all dressed in old sackcloth. It showed how sad and upset they were. The king of Nineveh heard what Jonah said, and the king was sitting on his throne.
00:07:24
Speaker
But he got down from it, and he sat in the dirt. He took off his kingly clothes, and he put on clothes made from old sackcloth. Then the king gave an order.
00:07:37
Speaker
Don't eat or drink anything. Don't even let animals eat or drink anything. Put on plain clothes and pray to God. Stop doing wrong and stop hurting others and being mean.
00:07:50
Speaker
Maybe God will change his mind. Maybe he will be kind. Maybe he will stop being angry and we won't die. God saw what the people were doing.
00:08:03
Speaker
He saw how they had stopped sinning. So he felt loving and kind toward them. He didn't get rid of them.
00:08:14
Speaker
Chapter four and second Kings chapter 14, verse 25. So God didn't send trouble to Nineveh and this made Jonah upset.
00:08:26
Speaker
He got angry. I knew this would happen, Jonah prayed. That's why I ran away. I know you're a loving, kind God, and you're not in a hurry to get angry, and you have plenty of love for everyone. You change your mind about sending trouble, so just let me die. It's better for me to die than to live.
00:08:49
Speaker
What right do you have to be angry? asked God.
00:08:55
Speaker
Then Jonah left Nineveh. He went to a place where he could see the city. He made a shady place to sit. He watched the city from there.
00:09:08
Speaker
Now God made a vine grow up and it made shade for Jonah. And Jonah was glad the vine was there. But early the next morning, God sent a worm. with The worm bit into the vine, so the vine dried up.
00:09:23
Speaker
The sun moved high into the sky and then God sent a hot wind. The sun beat down on Jonah's head. He got tired.
00:09:35
Speaker
He got so tired that he just felt like dying. It's better for me to die than to live, he said. What right do you have to be angry about the plant?
00:09:47
Speaker
asked God. I have a right, said Jonah. I am so angry could die.
00:09:58
Speaker
You cared about what happened to this vine, said God. You were not even the one who took care of it. You didn't make it grow. It just came up in the night.
00:10:09
Speaker
But it died just as fast as it came. But there are more than 120,000 people in Nineveh. They don't know which way is right.
00:10:21
Speaker
Shouldn't I care about them?
00:10:25
Speaker
Now Jeroboam II was still the king of Israel, and the enemy had taken land from him. God told Jonah that Jeroboam would win his land back.
00:10:36
Speaker
So Jonah told Jeroboam. Then Jeroboam and his army did win the land. And it happened just like God said it would. And that's the end of our reading today.
00:10:50
Speaker
I love the story of

Humanity of Biblical Figures and God's Presence

00:10:52
Speaker
Jonah. I don't know about you, but sometimes I can really relate to Jonah. I love how real people are in the Bible.
00:11:03
Speaker
They're not perfect. They're not all saintly and godly and forgiving and compassionate and just, you know, salt of the earth type people all the time. Because neither are we. are we.
00:11:19
Speaker
at first, the first thing that I forgot to mention in by the first time I and took this video is that God tried to run, er Jonah tried to run away from God.
00:11:32
Speaker
You can't run away from God. i love that. But how many times do we think we can just move away from something? Oh, I'll just, I don't like what's going on at my job. I'll just go get another job.
00:11:44
Speaker
I don't like this neighborhood. I'll just go live in another neighborhood. I don't like this. So I'll just go move somewhere else. I don't like that. I'll just, and we just think that by moving around that we can just run away from whatever problem we have going on when everything Everything is, God is in control of everything. You cannot run away from God.
00:12:09
Speaker
and And Jonah acknowledged that God was the one who made the land and the sea. And let's see, what else did he say?
00:12:27
Speaker
Oh, I lost where it was, but he said that God was the one who made the land and the sea.
00:12:37
Speaker
And. Oh, he made the sky, the sea and the land. So God made everything. How could Jonah possibly think he could run away from him? Do you remember when?
00:12:49
Speaker
ah The enemy came against either Israel or Judah, I can't remember which, and said that they believed that they had lost the battle because God was ah was a God of the of the hills and that they would win if they just got the Israelites on flat land because surely their God was only a God of the mountains and not a God of the valleys.
00:13:11
Speaker
And God said, I'm going to show them that I'm not just a God of the mountains. I am the Lord. but So I just, I love that. And I love Jonah.
00:13:23
Speaker
He's so angry. he doesn't want to give the message because he knows God will be compassionate and forgiving. How often do we want to see people get what they deserve?
00:13:38
Speaker
And we've been talking yesterday and a couple of days ago about God's compassion. He is so compassionate that no matter how bad we are, when we seek him, he is so faithful that he will still be found.
00:13:54
Speaker
He says that when you seek me, you will find me. God is so compassionate. And Jonah knew this. And so he said, I knew you were going to be kind and loving and and you have enough love for everybody. He says, I knew this would happen. That's why I ran away.
00:14:13
Speaker
i know you're a loving, kind God. You're not in a hurry to get angry. You have plenty of love for everyone. You change your mind about sending trouble. God said, what right do you have to be angry?
00:14:28
Speaker
And in our Big Bible, I'm going to read it there because I love how God put it there. In the Big Bible, God said, Is it good for you to be this angry?
00:14:43
Speaker
I love that.

God’s Compassion vs. Human Anger

00:14:44
Speaker
Is it good for us to be angry like that?
00:14:50
Speaker
What good does that do us? To be angry like that. God is not angry like that. We don't have to be scared of God that every little thing we do, he's going to just throw down lightning bolts and we have to worry about appeasing him.
00:15:06
Speaker
Everybody else worshiping fake gods was always trying to appease the gods. oh there's something happening. I have to offer a sacrifice so that the God will not be angry with us.
00:15:19
Speaker
And God is not like that. God is naturally loved. ah And I love how Jonah hated that, that he was, he didn't hate it. That's probably too strong to say, but he wanted Nineveh to get what they deserved.
00:15:34
Speaker
And that is not who our God is. He does not want to give us what we deserve. God wants to give us forgiveness. He tells us in the old Testament, I desire mercy rather than sacrifice.
00:15:51
Speaker
God was being merciful with the Ninevites. He was being compassionate. And in the New Testament, in 2 Peter Peter tells us that God does not want anybody to perish, but he wants everybody to come to repentance.
00:16:20
Speaker
And it is just so wonderful of our God to be so compassionate. And I love how he asked Jonah when he was continuously angry, is it good for you to be angry?
00:16:35
Speaker
me see. Is it good for you to be so angry about the plant? Is it good for you to be so angry? And I love how Jonah was so open with God and said, I have a right to be angry.
00:16:50
Speaker
And we we do, we feel like I have a right to be angry. i have a right to be angry at whoever did this to me. And God says, you didn't make the the vine. You didn't make the people.
00:17:04
Speaker
He says, i you didn't grow it, but you have more concern care and concern over this vine for which you didn't even take care of or grow. that city had 120,000 people plus animals.
00:17:19
Speaker
And I love how it says it in our big Bible. He said, you have pity on the plant for which you had you did no labor or make it grow that appeared overnight and perished overnight.
00:17:31
Speaker
So shouldn't I have pity on Nineveh, the great city that has in it more than 120,000 people who don't know their right hand from their left, as well as many animals?
00:17:47
Speaker
God is not just compassionate over his chosen people. God is compassionate for all people and the animals.
00:17:59
Speaker
He created those people just the same as he created you and me and the believers. He created people who don't know him. He created the people who don't even want to acknowledge him.
00:18:13
Speaker
And yet he has so much compassion. And like we read in Joel the other day, that even as he is sending his judgment, he said, even now you can call on me.
00:18:26
Speaker
You can come to me and I will save you.
00:18:32
Speaker
God wants nobody to perish. He is so compassionate. So

Sharing God's Compassionate Nature

00:18:38
Speaker
we too should be compassionate and pray for God to grant us compassion the way he has compassion on everybody.
00:18:47
Speaker
And even in the same way Jesus showed compassion for the people who were hurting him. And he said, forgive them God for they don't know what they are doing. And that is exactly what God says here.
00:19:02
Speaker
He says, they don't even know one hand from the other. They don't know what is right. So he sent somebody to tell them. And they did what? They repented.
00:19:14
Speaker
He gave them opportunity and they accepted that opportunity. God saw that they stopped sinning. we need to share God's good news with people, not in a hellfire and brimstone.
00:19:28
Speaker
you're you're But in a loving manner to tell people but how wonderful and compassionate our God is. That God loves people. He does not want to see them have to die and and be separated from him forever.
00:19:45
Speaker
But he wants all people to repent. And that is why he takes his time to bring about his judgment. And that's what 2 Peter tells us in chapter 3.
00:19:56
Speaker
is It says not to be confused about that. Let's

God's Patience and Desire for Repentance

00:20:04
Speaker
see, 2 Peter chapter 3.
00:20:09
Speaker
Verse eight says, but don't forget this one thing, loved ones, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day.
00:20:20
Speaker
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise as some consider slowness. Rather, he is being patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance.
00:20:39
Speaker
ah we need

Daily Application of the Bible’s Message

00:20:40
Speaker
to pray for the fruits of the spirit and abide in christ because apart from him we can't do any of that we can't just be compassionate we can't just be kind and loving and merciful and patient and self-controlled and not want people to get their just rewards we need to ask god to help us by giving us his spirit
00:21:05
Speaker
So there's our daily application for today, and I hope that you feel that God has lit your light. I know I feel much better about this recording than I did the other one. So thank you for joining me as we learn about God's application in our daily lives by reading his word.
00:21:24
Speaker
And let's spread the word about reading his word so that all people can know God's compassion and God's love for them. it is through reading the Bible that we will learn about God's great love and compassion for us so we can see ourselves in the people that we read about in the Bible and just become closer to God every day.
00:21:47
Speaker
So I hope you have a fabulous rest of your day, full of compassion and joy and peace and patience and love, gentleness and kindness and self-control.
00:21:58
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
