Vitamin D Deficiency and Autism

00:00:00
Speaker
I'll start our discussion of vitamin D deficiency with this quote from a study. However, there are some indications that early exposure to inadequate vitamin D may interact with other factors and contribute to the etiology of autism. Low vitamin D status might be highly prevalent in populations with ASD and intervention with vitamin D might be beneficial in reducing autistic symptoms among those who have ASD.

Global Prevalence of Low Vitamin D Levels

00:00:28
Speaker
So we have a growing body of research that is finding that autistic individuals have low levels of vitamin D. There's been studies that I've looked at that are done in Europe, in China, in the Middle East and the USA. And it's a very common issue in, to be honest, not just autistic children, just the population.
00:00:47
Speaker
in general from all around the world. This is

Public Health Concerns: Indoor Lifestyle Impact

Speaker
just a very, very prevalent, it's almost a public health crisis at this point, I think, because we are sitting at home, we're not getting enough sun exposure, we have become made to be afraid of going out in the sun without sunscreen. And even I, a couple of weeks before I started recording this course, I had my vitamin D level checked and it was on the low level of the normal range.

Vitamin D's Role in Immunity and Inflammation

00:01:13
Speaker
and i live in portugal and in the spring summer and even a large part of the autumn i'm getting a lot of sun so if my vitamin d level was that low i can only imagine what people in kind of more northern countries levels are so

Speaker
It's a very prevalent problem and the problem with being low in vitamin D is that we know that vitamin D is very important for the immune system, but researchers are increasingly finding links between low vitamin D status and low levels of the antioxidant glutathione, which I'll discuss later, and increased inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.
00:01:49
Speaker
So in other words, low vitamin D status could predispose your child to lowered antioxidant defenses and higher levels of inflammation and oxidative damage in the body.

Importance of Vitamin D Testing in Children

Speaker
So this is something to definitely one of the first tests you would want to run is for vitamin D status. And of course, I'll cover that in the next module. And if your child is low, you certainly need to be supplementing them with vitamin D.
