In today's reading we will read the Book of John Chapter 4. Today we will read about Jesus telling a Samaritan woman that He is the source of living water and that He is the Promised One. He also told the woman that God is Spirit and He must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. God, as usual, provides us with what we need. Since He must be worshipped in spirit He provides us with HIS Spirit when we believe in Jesus, His Son, as our salvation from sin!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God is the source of living water and He has told us this from the very beginning. We will look at Genesis 26:19, Jeremiah 2:13, Jeremiah 17:13, and Psalm 36:9 where God talks about being the fountain of living water. By Jesus saying He is able to give the woman living water, He is telling her that HE is God. He told her that it would no longer matter where people worshipped because God would fill us with living water (His Spirit!) so we can worship Him in Spirit and in truth and have access to Him at all times! What must we do to receive this living water? Believe that Jesus is the one and only Son of God who came to save us from our sins so that we would not be blamed/condemned but have eternal life in Him so that we can receive God's Holy Spirit to live within us, causing us to be born again, of Spirit. Today and every day, let us worship our Heavenly Father in Spirit and in Truth, with our whole body, mind, heart, strength, and spirit, by learning about who God is and loving Him for all He has done for  us and continues to do for us every day. God delights in us knowing who He is (the truth). Let us make Jesus the most important one in our lives every day, abiding in Him, having a one-on-one relationship with God, which is the way He designed us!

John chapter 4. Water from a well. Now Jesus was on his way to Galilee. Remember this was right after he had talked to Jesus.
00:04:11
Speaker
Nicodemus and after he had left the area where John the Baptist followers ah started to also leave John and started to follow Jesus. So now Jesus was traveling and he was on his way to Galilee and he went through the land of Samaria.
00:04:30
Speaker
He was tired so he stopped at a well and sat down and it was about noon and Jesus's friends went to the town to get lunch. And it wasn't long before a woman came to the well and she was coming to get water.
00:04:45
Speaker
Would you give me a drink? Jesus asked her. Now Jews don't like people from Samaria. So the woman said, Why are you asking me for a drink?
00:04:58
Speaker
You are a Jew and I am from Samaria. God has a gift for you, said Jesus. And if you knew who I you would ask me for a drink.
00:05:11
Speaker
And i would give you water that brings you life.
00:05:16
Speaker
You don't have anything to get water with, she said. So where are you going to get this water? You're not greater than Jacob, are you? He dug this well and he drank water from it.
00:05:27
Speaker
And so did his sons and his sheep and his cows.
00:05:32
Speaker
People who drink this water get thirsty again, said Jesus. But they can drink the water I give and never get thirsty again.
00:05:45
Speaker
In fact, my water will turn into a fountain, and it will be like a fountain of water inside them. It will become life that lasts forever forever.
00:05:58
Speaker
Oh, then give me some of this water, said the woman, and that way I won't get thirsty again. i won't have to keep coming back to this well. Go and get your husband, said Jesus, and then come back.
00:06:12
Speaker
I don't have a husband, she said. That is true, said Jesus. You have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not one of them.
00:06:26
Speaker
You're a prophet, said the woman. So what do you think? Here on this mountain is where my people worship. You Jews say we have to worship in Jerusalem.
00:06:41
Speaker
Someday you won't have to worry about where to worship, said Jesus. But you people really don't know the one that you worship. We Jews do know the one we worship.
00:06:54
Speaker
And it's through the Jews that the world will be saved.
00:07:00
Speaker
Someday, true worshipers will come from the Spirit. True worship will come from the Spirit, said Jesus. And in fact, the time is already here.
00:07:13
Speaker
God is Spirit. So worship must come from the Spirit. And it must be true. That's the way the Father wants it.
00:07:25
Speaker
Then the woman said, Someday the promised one is coming and and he will be able to tell us about it.
00:07:32
Speaker
I am the promised one, said Jesus.

Miracles of Jesus and Belief Among People

00:07:38
Speaker
And about that time, Jesus's friends came back and they were surprised to see Jesus talking to this woman.
00:07:45
Speaker
But they did not ask him why he was talking to her. Then the woman left her water jar there and she went back to town and she told people, come with me, come and see a man who knows everything I ever did.
00:08:00
Speaker
do you think he might be the promised one? so the people went with the woman to go see Jesus. Now Jesus's friends were trying to get him to eat something.
00:08:11
Speaker
But Jesus said, I already have food and it's food you don't know about.
00:08:19
Speaker
Do you think somebody gave him food? His friends asked. Doing what God wants is like food to me, said Jesus.
00:08:31
Speaker
Finishing his work fills me. You say that in four more months you can bring in the crops. But look, look at the fields.
00:08:43
Speaker
They are ready and it is time to bring the crops in now. People are like crops. They can be gathered and helped to find life that lasts forever.
00:08:57
Speaker
The planter and the one who gathers are happy together. It's true, said Jesus. One person plants and another brings in the crops.
00:09:09
Speaker
And ah I am sending you to bring in what you did not plant. Other people have done the hard work, and now you can gather what they planted.
00:09:21
Speaker
Lots of people from that town believed in Jesus, and they believed because of what the woman told them. Jesus knows everything I've ever done, she said. The people asked Jesus to stay with them for a while, so he stayed with them for two days.
00:09:37
Speaker
Many more people heard what Jesus had to say, and they believed too. They talked about it with the woman. At first, we believed just because of you, they said.
00:09:51
Speaker
But now, we have heard Jesus ourselves, and we know he really did come to save us.
00:10:02
Speaker
This section is entitled, A Sick Son.
00:10:07
Speaker
Jesus went back to the land of Galilee. The people there were glad to see him. They had been at the Passover holiday and they had seen the things he had done there. So Jesus went to the town of Cana again, and that's where he had turned the water into wine.
00:10:23
Speaker
Now a man who worked for the king near lived nearby in Capernaum. And he heard that Jesus had come to Galilee, so he went to go see him. This man's son was sick.
00:10:35
Speaker
and it looked like he wasn't going to live much longer. So the man asked Jesus to come to Capernaum, and he asked Jesus to make his son well. You people have to see wonders, don't you?
00:10:47
Speaker
said Jesus. Then you will believe. Please come before my son dies, said the man. You can go back to him, said Jesus. He will live.
00:10:59
Speaker
The man believed Jesus, and he left to go home. On the way, his servants came and met him, and they told him his son was alive.
00:11:12
Speaker
What time did he get better? asked the man. At one o'clock yesterday afternoon, they said. That's when he was not hot with a fever anymore. The father

Fulfillment of Old Covenant Prophecies

00:11:24
Speaker
knew that this was when Jesus had said, he will live.
00:11:29
Speaker
So the man believed in Jesus and everyone who lived at his house believed in him too. That was the second wonder that Jesus had done.
00:11:42
Speaker
That's the end of our reading today.
00:11:49
Speaker
So by now we know that Jesus is fulfilling the old covenant. He is fulfilling things that God did long ago. Even in the raising of the serpent on pole for the people traveling with Moses who would look upon the pole and be saved from their snake bites was symbolic of Jesus who would come and save the people from our sins when he was raised up on that cross to die.
00:12:22
Speaker
We look up upon him. And he saved us. We are saved. We won't die. We may have a ah physical transformation into our spiritual life, but our spirit will never die.
00:12:38
Speaker
and in the same way, Jesus is fulfilling what God wrote about water in the Old Covenant. And when we read Jeremiah,
00:12:49
Speaker
We talked about that God had said that he was a fountain of living water. So what does living water mean? We're going to go all the way back to chapter 26 in Genesis, way back to the beginning.
00:13:08
Speaker
When Isaac, who was Jacob's son,
00:13:14
Speaker
was... um looking for water. He was, he was building, uh, wells. He was digging wells. And
00:13:28
Speaker
actually he's not, I said Jacob's son. There are so many names. I'm sorry. You know what I mean? Abraham's son. Isaac was Abraham's son. He was, after he had left Egypt, he, he was, uh,
00:13:44
Speaker
re-digging the wells that the Philistines had dug up. This was after he had said of Rebecca that she was his sister and in order to try to save himself from being killed.
00:13:58
Speaker
And so now he's been sent away because his people are too numerous. And they said the land cannot support all of them, that they are too powerful for the people that they are living with. So he's digging wells and he finds a well.
00:14:13
Speaker
Actually, his servant came. So we will read in.
00:14:19
Speaker
ah in verse 19, it says.
00:14:23
Speaker
Well, we'll start in verse 18. Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of his father, Abraham. The Philistines had stopped them up after Abraham's death. And he gave them the same names that his father had given them.
00:14:37
Speaker
Then Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found a well of living water there. So what does that mean? They found a well of living water.
00:14:48
Speaker
in In Hebrew, they're they're communicating that the water is fresh and flowing versus being a stagnant pool of water. That is what living water is. It is fresh and flowing.
00:15:03
Speaker
Okay, now we're going to go to Jeremiah. And we are going to look at, let's first look at the Psalm. There's actually a Psalm as well. Psalm 36 verse nine.
00:15:16
Speaker
And that says, for with you is the fountain of life. In your light, we see light. So God is being referred to as the fountain of life.
00:15:27
Speaker
Okay, now let's look at Jeremiah. We'll go to chapter 17.
00:15:37
Speaker
ah Starting, actually, let's go to verse, let's go to chapter two first. God is speaking to the people through the prophet Jeremiah. And he says in verse 13 of chapter two, my people have committed two evils.
00:15:51
Speaker
They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters.
00:15:58
Speaker
and they have made out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. So remember the living water is fresh and flowing water.
00:16:10
Speaker
A cistern is like a jug, a container that holds water. And in it, he God says that they have made broken cisterns. They can't even hold water.
00:16:22
Speaker
So it's like filling it with water and it just empties out. It's got a hole in it. You remember that song? There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza. That song just popped into my head.
00:16:35
Speaker
They... the The people were filling themselves with with things that were not meant to fu fulfill the hunger and the thirst that God gives us.
00:16:46
Speaker
We were created with a desire to worship. He has given us a hunger in the same way that Moses said when he was traveling with the people, that God gave them hunger so that he could satisfy that hunger.
00:17:03
Speaker
And in the same way, he has created within each of us a hunger to worship. But when we fill that need and that hunger to worship with false things like material possessions, our work,
00:17:20
Speaker
trying to build ourselves up, trying to fill our time with just family, trying to seek out a significant other, a person that we want to love. And we try to put all of our effort into these things.
00:17:35
Speaker
Ultimately, we are left unfulfilled. And that is the broken cistern that we have made for ourselves rather than worshiping the fountain of life that God is.
00:17:50
Speaker
So now we're going to look at Jeremiah chapter 17, where God says the same thing. So this fountain living water concept that Jesus giving us,
00:18:04
Speaker
those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth for they have forsaken the lord the fountain of living water so this fountain of living water concept that jesus is giving us This is something that the people should have been familiar with the concept because God had already been telling them that he is the fountain of living water.
00:18:29
Speaker
So when we go to John chapter four and we look at Jesus's words again,
00:18:39
Speaker
we see that he says,
00:18:44
Speaker
If you knew the gift of God and who it is who is saying to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. Meaning he would have given you himself.
00:18:58
Speaker
How did God give us himself? First he sent his son, but God placed his spirit in us when we choose to believe in him.
00:19:10
Speaker
God sent the Holy Spirit at Shavuot when he poured out his spirit onto the people, when he gave us shalom, wholeness.

Worship and Relationship with God

00:19:21
Speaker
Why did he do this?
00:19:23
Speaker
Because Jesus tells us that the time has come for us to worship God in spirit and in truth. Why?
00:19:34
Speaker
Because God is spirit. And this is the way he wants it.
00:19:42
Speaker
God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
00:19:49
Speaker
So what does that mean to worship in spirit and in truth? We know that Moses taught us that we need to love the Lord our God with all of our heart and all of our soul and with all of our strength.
00:20:03
Speaker
Jesus adds to it our mind. Why? he is telling us here that God wants to be worshipped in spirit and in truth. We've learned in the Old Covenant that God delights in those who know him.
00:20:19
Speaker
God is the truth. He tells us with many prophecies the things that he would do. We know that he is true. He does everything he's going to say, everything he says he's going to do.
00:20:33
Speaker
So how do we worship in spirit? By receiving his spirit and being born again of spirit. And then loving him with that spirit.
00:20:44
Speaker
By worshiping him with that spirit. By giving him the respect that he is due. And in truth, by learning about him.
00:20:55
Speaker
The more we know about him, the more we love him. And the more we see how much God loves us. And we read yesterday that God loves us so, so much that he sent his one and only son, Jesus, to be our sacrificial atonement for our sins.
00:21:16
Speaker
The priest could only go into the holiest of holies, which is the place where God's spirit was in the tabernacle and in the temple later on. once a year to bring their sin offering.
00:21:29
Speaker
And when Jesus died, that veil was torn from top to bottom, not from side to side so that we could peek under it, but from top to bottom, giving us, all of us, access to his spirit all the time.
00:21:46
Speaker
We don't have to be afraid because Jesus told us yesterday that he did not come to blame us or to condemn us. but to save us. So now God has poured out his living water, his spirit.
00:22:01
Speaker
He created a hunger in us to worship and he is fulfilling that hunger with his Holy Spirit. We have access to him all the time.
00:22:12
Speaker
And so later Jesus will teach us that we need to abide in him. That is how we worship and we worship in truth and in spirit.
00:22:23
Speaker
How do you like that? Is that not amazing? What do you think about that as our daily application?
00:22:31
Speaker
I love it. To worship God in spirit and in truth with our whole mind because God did not create us to be mindless. He gave us a mind. He wants us to use it.
00:22:44
Speaker
We need to learn about him, who he is, and know that he loved us first and how much he loves us so that we can love him in return. Why?
00:22:55
Speaker
Because this is the way God wants it. He desires personal relationship with every single person on this entire planet. God is capable of unending amounts of love.
00:23:10
Speaker
It can be difficult for us to have a relationship with absolutely everybody. We can feel like it is draining, but God is a fountain of living water.
00:23:20
Speaker
He never runs out. He is the source of living water and he pours out his spirit in abundance so that we can be one with him. We are one with him, but if we don't access him and be one with him, we are missing out. We are hungry.
00:23:39
Speaker
We are filling ourselves and like ah like a cistern with a hole in it with things that are not meant to satisfy us. But when we fill ourselves with God's worship, worshiping God in spirit and in truth, with all of our heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul, with all of our strength, then we are satisfied.
00:24:01
Speaker
And those things of the world, they no longer seem important. So let's look at the food that Jesus said that he had. We talked about thirsty.
00:24:13
Speaker
Now we talk about hunger. it says, Jesus says here today, says, doing what God wants is like food to me. Finishing his work fills me.
00:24:25
Speaker
We all have work that God has given us to do And doing the work, what God wants us to do very fulfilling.
00:24:37
Speaker
And we will always be filled by him. We will never have to be hungry. we won't need to keep looking for things to satisfy us because in him, we will be satisfied.

Spiritual Fulfillment and Community Engagement

00:24:51
Speaker
I feel like I can never get enough though. That's so sometimes I feel like, ah, but Lord, I do always want more. I always want more of him though. But guess what? it's It's always satisfying.
00:25:04
Speaker
I just, I can't do enough. I want more and more, but I am happy in it. i am, I am, he satisfies my hunger for him. He satisfies my thirst for him.
00:25:18
Speaker
And you can't get too much of him. He's the only good thing we can't get too much of. i I am a health and wellness coach outside of here. So I am in the family way coaching.
00:25:31
Speaker
So I've learned about teaching people about how to attain their wellness goals. And some of that involves nutritional aspects. And so we've spoken a little bit before about it's like eating junk food.
00:25:46
Speaker
When we're hungry, it's not satisfying. It doesn't fill you up. It's just, it still leaves you hungry where you're not satisfied. But when you eat of nutritious food, your body is nourished and and it is good for you. And it's the same way with God doing his work is the food that fills us.
00:26:09
Speaker
And his spirit is the water that quenches our thirst.
00:26:16
Speaker
So there you go. That's our daily application and our reading for today. So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light. Oh, I see you glowing out there. Look at all that light.
00:26:27
Speaker
Oh, it's bright out there. I almost can't see. there you are.
00:26:34
Speaker
So please click your light button when you're done listening or watching. Feel free to comment in the audio section or there's also sections available on Spotify where you can comment. And Spotify does not send me notifications very often, but I do check.
00:26:50
Speaker
So I will, i always like to get back to people who comment and wish to be part of a community here as far as our daily reading and applications. So I'd love to hear from you. I also have a space at my website ah at the top of each page under the read the Bible in one year where I have the ah video version as well as the audio version. And I have a purple box there that says, leave me a message letting me know you watched or letting me know you listened.
00:27:17
Speaker
And that will send me an email and I will always respond to that. So thank you for being my brothers and my sisters in Jesus. I am so happy to be here with you for today's daily reading on August 18th.
00:27:32
Speaker
And i hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, hungering for Jesus, thirsting for him, being fulfilled, doing what God wants you to do, worshiping God in spirit and in truth.
00:27:45
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
