Bible Reading and Calendar Planning

00:01:10
Speaker
I will let us know that we are reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by, that's right, Karen Henley.
00:01:20
Speaker
And if you are following along, keeping track on your calendar, it's time to get that out today because we have one more day left after today and we will be finished with the month of April and you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:37
Speaker
I will be getting May's calendar posted here today or tomorrow so that it will be all ready for those looking to print that out ahead of time so that you will be ready when we call up that calendar.
00:01:50
Speaker
And that will be posted on the website. And if you are not familiar yet or have forgotten the website address for that, where you can download your own copy of that calendar for your daily commitment, then I will let you know that it is at
00:02:11
Speaker
And you click on the tab for Read the Bible in One Year.

Counting of the Omer Tradition Discussion

00:02:15
Speaker
And there it is, a downloadable calendar. Even if you just need a calendar for your refrigerator or for your wall, it works great for that too. I made sure to get all the days on the calendar in the right order so you can use it however you like.
00:02:31
Speaker
I say that because one month, I i don't know what I did wrong. i I missed the numbers and I was making it from the previous month and I ended up with the wrong numbers on the wrong squares halfway in between the month. It was terrible, but you know, learning curve in the first ah couple of months there.
00:02:51
Speaker
Well, if you are interested in counting the Omer with me today, this is something that God has commanded to be done after Passover and but to count down the day to Shavuot.
00:03:05
Speaker
Shavuot is the final day of the harvest for spring. And in the New Testament, it was fulfilled with Pentecost, the giving of the Holy Spirit. Shavuot is ah also remembered in the Jewish church as being a day that they've associated with the giving of the Ten Commandments by God to Moses.
00:03:29
Speaker
And so we will learn a little bit more about that on another day, but I do want to keep us in mind for that, that that's why we are counting the Omer each day, Omer. And it is not simply something to do.
00:03:41
Speaker
It does have a reason. It does have a point. And it is something God has commanded each of us to do individually. And so I'm helping us obey that by counting the Omer every day until we reach 50.
00:03:54
Speaker
And then we will be done with it here on this ah event so that we can be in obedience to God together. So if you'd like to count the Omer, please repeat after me.
00:04:07
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Omer.
00:04:24
Speaker
Today is the second day of the third week and day 16.
00:04:34
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:04:37
Speaker
You can find ah the Counting of the Omer wording just by doing a search, but if you would like to have your own Counting of the Omer calendar type of a thing, it's a little little devotional.
00:04:49
Speaker
I downloaded mine from shereshdavid.org, and this is a Messianic Jewish congregation located in Florida. And he did a great job of putting this devotional out.
00:05:01
Speaker
It's not just

Historical Narrative: Israel and Judah

00:05:02
Speaker
a and one and done devotional. He actually puts this out differently each year ah because initially when I found it, it was for a previous year, like 2022.
00:05:13
Speaker
And I was like, ah these dates don't line up. So I went directly to their website and I will have the link for that website and right to this devotional in my description below so that if you would like to download it and have your own little devotional during this time of counting the Omer,
00:05:31
Speaker
You can have it too. They have a little theme like today's theme is God is with you. And then they give scripture verse and then a thought and then a challenge. And they have a little space to write if you would like to write in there too.
00:05:46
Speaker
And that's it. It's actually less time than the regular devotional. It's very short.
00:05:52
Speaker
All right, well, we are reading about the division of the kingdom of Israel. It is now in two kingdoms. One part has 10 tribes, and it is called Israel.
00:06:04
Speaker
And the second is Judah, and it consists of two tribes. And what we saw yesterday is that Rehoboam, those names are difficult. I'm not even sure I'm pronouncing it correctly.
00:06:17
Speaker
I have not done my study to see what the correct pronunciation is. is the a son of Solomon.
00:06:30
Speaker
and he is in charge of Judah. And then Jeroboam is king of the Israel portion. And yesterday we saw Jeroboam doing terrible things by setting up specific, but by deliberately setting up places of false god idol worship because the temple is not located in his section of the kingdom.
00:06:57
Speaker
So ah he is deliberately going against God by doing so in order to try to ensure that his people stay with his kingdom.
00:07:10
Speaker
He is not trusting in God to ah take care of his kingdom, and nor is he trusting in God for the promise that God gave him that he would get to be king.
00:07:21
Speaker
God is the one who appointed him as king. And we saw that if God ah was going to appoint him, if he had obeyed God, then surely God would have stood behind him, or in front of him rather, I guess we should say.
00:07:34
Speaker
and taking care of him, but that's not what he did. So today we are going to read more about that and we're going to read about the consequences for him having done this, and this terrible thing.
00:07:50
Speaker
the We are going to be reading this out of 1 Kings, chapters 13 and 14, and then 2 Chronicles 11 and 12. That's where our reading comes to us today.
00:08:04
Speaker
Our first section is entitled Jeroboam's son. Remember now King Jeroboam is the one in charge of Israel. So he's a little it can be a little difficult to keep track of all of these names.
00:08:19
Speaker
One day, King Jeroboam was standing by his altar in Bethel. A prophet came to him from Judah. The prophet shouted to the king of Israel and he told the king what God said.
00:08:33
Speaker
A king will be born in Judah and his name will be Josiah. He will kill the bad priests who work here. He will burn their bones on this altar.
00:08:47
Speaker
The prophet said, God will give a sign showing his word is true. The altar will break apart and dust from the old fires will flow out.
00:09:01
Speaker
King Jeroboam was very angry and held his hand up. He pointed to the prophet, catch that man, he shouted. And suddenly Jeroboam's hand bent over like a dry leaf. The altar broke apart and dust from the old fires flowed out.
00:09:20
Speaker
Pray for me, called King Jeroboam to the prophet. Pray that my hand will be well again.
00:09:27
Speaker
So the prophet prayed for King Jeroboam. Then his hand got well.
00:09:34
Speaker
But King Jeroboam would not change. He kept making people priests. They were people God did not choose. The king said that anybody who wanted to be a priest could be.
00:09:51
Speaker
And this sin led to Jeroboam's troubles. It led to losing his whole kingdom.
00:10:01
Speaker
Now Jeroboam's son got sick, and Jeroboam told his wife, make yourself look like another woman, then nobody will know you are the queen. And go see Ahijah the prophet.
00:10:14
Speaker
He is the one who told me that I would be king. Take 10 loaves of bread with you, and take some cake and some honey, and Ahijah will tell you about our son.
00:10:28
Speaker
So the queen dressed like someone else and then she went to go see Ahijah. Now Ahijah was old and could not see, but God had told him, Jeroboam's wife is coming today.
00:10:41
Speaker
She is going to ask you about their sick son. When she comes, she will pretend to be somebody else. then Then God told Ahijah what to tell her.
00:10:56
Speaker
And Ahijah heard the queen walk up to the door. And he said, come in, Jeroboam's wife. Why do you pretend to be somebody else?
00:11:07
Speaker
Then Ahijah said, I have bad news for you. Tell Jeroboam what God says. He says that he chose Jeroboam to be his people's leader.
00:11:21
Speaker
He gave Jeroboam the kingdom. But Jeroboam has not been like David. David obeyed God. He did what was right.
00:11:33
Speaker
And Jeroboam has done more wrong than anybody before him. He has made other gods. He has made gods out of metal. He has made God angry.
00:11:46
Speaker
He has turned away from God. So God is going to bring trouble to your family. Dogs will eat those from your family who die in the city, and birds will eat those who die in the country.
00:12:02
Speaker
Now go back home," said Ahisha, and when you step into your city, your son will die. The people will cry. They'll put his body in a grave, but he's the only one who will have a grave.
00:12:18
Speaker
No one else in your family will have a grave. Only your son has any good in him. God will choose another king for Israel, said Ahisha.
00:12:32
Speaker
Today. Yes. Now. God will send trouble to Israel and your people will be like a water plant. God will pull up your people by the roots and he will send them away from this land that he gave them.
00:12:48
Speaker
He will send them here and there across the river. And it's all because they made him mad by making idols. God will give Israel up because of Jeroboam's sins.
00:13:03
Speaker
Jeroboam's wife went back home. As soon as she stepped into her house, her son died. They put his body in a grave and everyone cried for him.
00:13:20
Speaker
Egypt comes to fight. Rehoboam still ruled in Jerusalem, and he built forts. He stored food and olive oil and wine in them.
00:13:33
Speaker
He sent shields and swords to all the cities, and he made his city strong. Rehoboam had many sons, and one of them was named Abijah.
00:13:44
Speaker
Rehoboam said that Abijah would be the king after him. So he sent his other sons to live in different cities and he got wives for them. But Rehoboam forgot about God's law.
00:13:57
Speaker
He did what was wrong. He didn't think about what God wanted. Then his whole nation sinned. The people made other places of worship, which God did not want.
00:14:13
Speaker
and they did the bad things that other nations did. So the king of Egypt came out to fight them and he brought 1200 chariots. He brought 60,000 men, horse riders.
00:14:27
Speaker
He brought a big army. He took Judah's forts and then he marched to Jerusalem. A prophet went to Rehoboam and the leaders.
00:14:39
Speaker
He told them what God said. You left me, so I am leaving you to the king of Egypt.
00:14:48
Speaker
Then Rehoboam and the leader said, God is right in doing this to us.
00:14:55
Speaker
God saw that now they were making him the important one. So God told the prophet, they are making me the important one, so I won't get rid of them.
00:15:07
Speaker
I'll save them soon, but they will have to serve the king of Egypt. They'll see how it is to serve another king. They'll see that it's better to serve me.
00:15:20
Speaker
The king of Egypt fought against Jerusalem and he took the riches that were in the worship house. He took the riches that were in the palace. He took it all. He even took the gold shields that Solomon had made.
00:15:36
Speaker
So Rehoboam made shields out of other metal. He gave some shields to the guards at the worship house. He gave some to the guards at the palace. They went to the worship house with Rehoboam and they carried their shields with them.
00:15:51
Speaker
There was still some good in Judah. Rehoboam had said that God was the most important, so God was not angry at him anymore. But Israel and Judah were at war with each other all the time.
00:16:06
Speaker
Rehoboam

The Importance of Prioritizing God

00:16:07
Speaker
was king for 17 years, and then he died, and his son Abijah became the next king.
00:16:16
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:16:22
Speaker
Well, it sure is easy to see why Karen Henley entitled this section of our stories, Bad Kings, isn't it? Unfortunately, and the two nations had a string of bad kings.
00:16:37
Speaker
There's a little section in the in this version of the Bible here. Whoops, I just took my place away. And it actually has a timeline. So if you have a copy of the Day by Day Kids Bible and you go to the center where it's glossy, she actually has a timeline. And then after the timeline, the second page,
00:17:02
Speaker
mean third or fourth page, right? About the third and fourth pages. It starts with a section entitled Bad Kings. And then after that, she has ah the messages about what's coming, messages about kings, armies, and idols.
00:17:20
Speaker
She has a great um
00:17:27
Speaker
timeline here of just everything laid out with the kings. Actually, it's not just the bad kings. She has ah like a chart, like a graph, and it shows by color with the crown whether the king was a good king, a good king part of the time, or a bad king.
00:17:44
Speaker
So we can see here that
00:17:49
Speaker
it looks like After Rehoboam and Judah, I was looking to see about his son. i was looking, I was curious to see.
00:18:01
Speaker
yeah it says Abijah became the next king. But Abijah is not listed there. and I don't know why. Maybe he wasn't king for very long. We'll find out.
00:18:12
Speaker
Well, I was trying to get a little bit of a ah a jump there. I was curious. Is he going to be just as bad as his father was? My goodness.
00:18:23
Speaker
So there is just a lot going on there. And as we can see, the biggest offense that was going on between the two kingdoms is that God takes it very seriously when the people set up false places of worship to fake idols.
00:18:45
Speaker
And also what we cannot understate, we can't say it often enough, is that they did not make God the most important one.
00:18:57
Speaker
And we see that as soon as Rehoboam, the king of Judah, said God was the most important one, and they started changing and making God the most important one, that is when God would be with them again.
00:19:11
Speaker
And the same is true for us. Every day, we need to work toward making God the most important one. You know, I guess I can say that prior to this event, I don't think I really thought about very often making God the most important one in my life.
00:19:31
Speaker
And reading the these ah stories every day, even though i used I would read the Bible almost every day for a while. You know, nobody's perfect, but I've had times where I've diligently read the Bible regularly. I've done Bible studies, going to church every week.
00:19:49
Speaker
I've had devotionals. And I can't say that ever my specific goal was to make God the most important one in my life. I know that that we know the Lord's Prayer and that we're supposed accept His will, not our will be done, but I never thought of that in in the in the terms of every single day making God the most important one in my life.
00:20:17
Speaker
I would honor him in different ways and I always trusted, you know, as much as I as i could in my in my walk at the time. I've learned things. But again, although I could list all the things I did do, i did not make God the most important one in my life every day.
00:20:35
Speaker
and that is so important because if it wasn't, it would not be restated over and over and over again as our daily application. So even if it might seem like it's a little redundant,
00:20:48
Speaker
It isn't because we see a ah whole nation that God built where he did amazing things with them. And yet all the time they were turning away.
00:21:00
Speaker
We are no different. We have to be reminded every day that God is the most important one in our lives and that we are not to set up other things and make them more important.
00:21:14
Speaker
And that's not to say that we are setting up altars or or worshiping other people or other things but we are we're worshiping not maybe not what we would consider other false gods but when we make anything more important than God we are not honoring him and apparently that is way more important than I ever gave it credit for and so as part of our this event in showing our daily application every day I know that for me, I am trying to make God the most important one in my life now.
00:21:49
Speaker
and And I hope that you are too. it ah It just cannot be understated enough that each day when we see in our daily lesson, in our daily application, that that is what is going on, is that we need to make God the most important one.
00:22:06
Speaker
And look how faithful God is. He's using David as an example. That that is who we needed to pattern after, that to love God with our whole hearts.
00:22:18
Speaker
David was not perfect. We saw things that he did wrong, but he always turned back to God. And that is what God wants us to do. He knows we're not perfect.
00:22:29
Speaker
Thankfully, we have Jesus who has who's shed his blood for us so that we can be in communion with God all the time. But that doesn't mean that we don't turn away from him and and do our own thing.
00:22:42
Speaker
And so we just want to work every day today, whatever day you're listening to this, that's our daily application today, more than anything today, that we make God the most important one in our day today.
00:22:59
Speaker
So thank you for

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:23:00
Speaker
joining me. I hope that you feel that God has lit your light. I know this was very enlightening to me and I hope that you have found it very enlightening to you as well.
00:23:11
Speaker
I would ask that you would consider pressing that light button if you feel that God has lit your light so that we can give God the glory for what he is teaching us and so that we can encourage others to also learn that they need to also make God the most important one in their lives.
00:23:29
Speaker
And we can do that by sharing this event with others and by talking about it, by clicking that light button so that it will pop up on YouTube a little more. It can be recommended.
00:23:41
Speaker
If you have a way to write a review, like on Apple Music, maybe you could write that review on Apple Music saying what you think about the event so that other people will be encouraged to listen to it.
00:23:52
Speaker
Because it has nothing to do with me. It's not for me or for this event specifically. It is so that we can spread the word about reading God's word. And I know that there are a lot of options out there for reading the Bible each day.
00:24:06
Speaker
There podcasts that talk about it. And if you feel that this event, it would be beneficial for others, then let's bring the glory to God and bring others to Him so that they can also learn to make God the most important one in their lives.
00:24:23
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. And i hope everybody has a fantastic rest of their day. And I will be here for every everyone again tomorrow.
