Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between  Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost.  As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has  appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare)  today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to  count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic  Congregation Shoresh David in Florida:   https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today we will be starting the section of the Day By Day Kid's Bible entitled Bad Kings. We will be reading about Solomon's son Rehoboam becoming king and refusing to be kind to Jeroboam or the  other leaders, which resulted in the splitting of the kingdom into two nations- Israel and Judah. We will see Jeroboam dishonoring and disobeying God by setting up false gods because his kingdom does not contain the temple and he is afraid that the people in his kingdom will turn against him. We will read about him setting up people to be priests, rather than obeying God and only allowing Levites to be priests, and so the Levites will move to the kingdom of Judah. We will also read that all of the people who loved God with their whole hearts will move out of Rehoboam's Israel to live in Judah, where they can love and worship God properly. In our discussion for daily application today we will talk about the importance of trusting God and following Him and his rules rather than man made rules that disobey and dishonor God. We will talk about the importance of making God the most important one in our lives because Jesus is THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life. As followers of God we need to love Him with our whole hearts and seek His kingdom first. God WILL take care of us!

Introduction and Bible Reading

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello, hello. so Today is April 28th. You are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching, and we're here for our daily Bible reading, as well as our counting of the Omer.
00:00:14
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me today, whether you are following along on your favorite podcasting app or whether you are watching on a video. I am so glad you are here as we are reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:31
Speaker
If you are keeping track of your daily Bible reading, then it's time to get out that calendar and your sticker and get ready because you're about to hear the Bible today.

Counting the Omer Ritual Explained

00:00:44
Speaker
We are going to be having our daily counting of the Omer today. So if you are following along on a year that's after 2025, then this ah counting of the Omer will not be correct for you.
00:00:58
Speaker
But for today in 2025, it is correct. But I'm going to keep these postings up so that in the years to come, anybody looking to read the Bible in a year can look back and and watch these videos or listen to the audio.
00:01:16
Speaker
If you are not familiar, and the counting of the Omer first has a ah blessing to God. And then after that, we count the Omer. So if you would like to count with me, just repeat after me.

Solomon's Son and Israel's Division

00:01:31
Speaker
Blessed are you, o Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sent us who has set us apart by your commandments.
00:01:44
Speaker
and has commanded us to count the Omer. Today is the first day of the third week and day 15.
00:01:57
Speaker
I have counted the Omer.
00:02:01
Speaker
I am going to be reading to us shortly in a couple of days or a week or so, and we will read more about the, um, the and correlation between Shavuot and Pentecost, the day that ah that commemorates the giving of the Holy Spirit by God.
00:02:23
Speaker
So we are reading in ah the book of first Kings. Now, yesterday we finished the book of Ecclesiastes and we saw the end of the reign of Solomon. His life has ended and we are going to be seeing his son.
00:02:38
Speaker
And as we saw yesterday, he was disobedient by not putting God first in his life. And he was turned away by his wives to worship fake gods.
00:02:49
Speaker
As a consequence for that, God is going to take the one kingdom of Israel and tear it apart and make two kingdoms. One will be made out of the ten tribes and one will be made out of two tribes.

Leadership and Division in 1 Kings

00:03:04
Speaker
And the one with two tribes is the one that will be left for Solomon's family and his son. And God was gracious not to tear the kingdom apart during Solomon's lifespan, but now his life has ended and now we are going to see the kingdom made into two.
00:03:23
Speaker
And this section of ah the Bible here is entitled Bad Kings. That's very sad already. And our first section is going to consist of 1 Kings chapter 12.
00:03:40
Speaker
and 2 Chronicles chapters 10 through 11. Then we will have 1 Kings chapters 13. Oh, that's tomorrow.
00:03:53
Speaker
Oh, that's all of our section then. It will simply be 1 Kings chapter 12 and 2 Chronicles chapters 10 and 11. This is actually a pretty short reading today.
00:04:06
Speaker
One nation turns into two nations. Jeroboam and many other people went to see King Rehoboam. This is Solomon's son.
00:04:18
Speaker
When Solomon was the king, he was very hard on us, they said. Make things easier for us, and then we will serve you. Come back in three days, said the king.
00:04:31
Speaker
So Jeroboam and the people left, and King Rehoboam asked the older leaders what he should do. They had helped King Solomon with questions too. Be the people's servant, said the older leaders, and give them a good answer and then they will serve you forever.
00:04:51
Speaker
But King Rehoboam didn't like what the older leaders had said. He went to the young men and they had grown up with Rehoboam and they were serving him now.
00:05:03
Speaker
What should I say? asked the king. The young men told the king to say these words. My little finger is big.
00:05:14
Speaker
It's bigger than the middle of my father's body. My father was hard on you, but I will be harder. My father hurts you with whips, but I'll hurt you with big spiders that can bite you.
00:05:32
Speaker
Three days passed and Jeroboam and the people came back. King Rehoboam had an answer for them that was not kind. He didn't listen to the older leaders.
00:05:46
Speaker
He listened to the young men. He said, my father was hard on you, but I'll be harder. He hurt you with whips, but I will hurt you with spiders that can bite you.
00:06:01
Speaker
Then we won't be your people, said everyone. And they went home. King Rehoboam sent a man to try to make Israel serve him. But the people threw rocks at him and they killed him.
00:06:15
Speaker
And Rehoboam got away in his chariot and he went back to Jerusalem in Judah.

Jeroboam's Idolatry

00:06:21
Speaker
After that, Israel and Judah were two different nations.
00:06:28
Speaker
God's words to Jeroboam long ago came true, and Jeroboam became king of the ten family groups in the north, and they called their nation Israel.
00:06:39
Speaker
Rehoboam, son of Solomon, was still king, but he had just a small part of the kingdom. He had the family groups of Judah and Benjamin, and they called their nation Judah Israel.
00:06:55
Speaker
When Rehoboam got to Jerusalem, he called out his army. He marched out to fight Israel. He wanted them to be in his kingdom again. Now God gave a message to a prophet.
00:07:08
Speaker
God told him to go to Rehoboam and say these words. God says to go back home. Don't fight. God made Israel leave Judah.
00:07:21
Speaker
So Rehoboam and the army of Judah went back home. In Israel, Jeroboam began thinking, the worship house is in Jerusalem, he said, and my people will have to go there to worship and then they'll turn back to the king Rehoboam and they'll kill me.
00:07:42
Speaker
So Jeroboam made two gold cows for people to worship as idols. He showed them to his people. It's too hard for you to go to Jerusalem, he said.
00:07:55
Speaker
So these are your gods. They took you out of Egypt. Then he put one gold cow in the town of Bethel, and he put the other one in the town of Dan.
00:08:08
Speaker
The people sinned, and they went to worship those idols. Jeroboam also got people to be priests, but God did not say they could be priests.
00:08:20
Speaker
Only people from the family group of Levi could be priests. The Jeroboam also started a holiday for those fake gods, and he made altars, and he gave gifts on the i to the idols.
00:08:35
Speaker
Then the real priests from the family of Levi left Israel, and they went to the city of Jerusalem in Judah. It was all because Jeroboam had let other people be priests.
00:08:49
Speaker
People who loved God with their whole hearts went to Judah. they left They let Rehoboam, son of Solomon, be their king, and they helped make his kingdom strong.
00:09:04
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:09:08
Speaker
That is a sad story today, isn't it?
00:09:13
Speaker
Rehoboam had the leadership of his father. And it sounds like Solomon was a hard king, but Rehoboam was not kind. And he listened to the young people, not to the wise leaders.
00:09:28
Speaker
And then what God said would happen did happen. It may have been that God may have been kind to Rehoboam if he had simply been kind to the and other leaders.
00:09:42
Speaker
But that God knew that that's not what was going to happen.
00:09:48
Speaker
The people who loved God with all their hearts went to go live in the part of the

Leadership Reflections

00:09:53
Speaker
country. Now the second nation where the temple was so that they could worship God properly.
00:10:00
Speaker
And even the priests had left so that they could serve the temple.
00:10:05
Speaker
ah What a sad story this was today.
00:10:12
Speaker
Our daily application today is not to do our own will, but to do what is wise and what is God's will. Jeroboam already turned the nation of Israel against God with his false idols because he was selfish and he wanted to be king.
00:10:32
Speaker
And God had already told him he would be king. So that he was trying to take matters into his own hands. He didn't need to sin against God after God had done such a wonderful thing for him.
00:10:46
Speaker
He could have been a good example and had let the people go to Jerusalem, but instead he was scared. He did not trust in God. We need to remember for our daily application to trust in God.
00:10:59
Speaker
And even if things look bad, that we need to do what the right thing is and to follow God's ways because his ways are higher than our own. Remember yesterday we talked about that we need to love God with our whole hearts.
00:11:13
Speaker
And that's what King Solomon had done wrong. And i you would think that Jeroboam would have seen the example from King Solomon that God had taken the kingdom and split it because of his does um disobedience and worshiping fake gods.
00:11:30
Speaker
And here he is doing the exact same thing, but worse.
00:11:36
Speaker
Well, it probably was just as bad because it says that Solomon set up ah temples to the fake gods as well. So he was not being a good example of a good king for good leadership.
00:11:47
Speaker
Neither of them were. And that is why the title of our section is entitled Bad Kings. We have to take as our daily application too that even though we may have rules that are made that are wrong, that we cannot follow bad rulers with bad laws, we have to follow God first.
00:12:07
Speaker
God is who we need to make the most important one and we need to follow his wisdom for his will to be done and not for our own will to be done to try to save ourselves.
00:12:19
Speaker
As we mentioned yesterday and other days as well, Jesus says to seek first the kingdom of God and everything else we need will be given to us. Would God have and punished Jeroboam for following God?
00:12:35
Speaker
That is not likely. Our God doesn't punish us for obedience. We are punished for disobedience.
00:12:43
Speaker
And so let that be an example for us that as we see Jeroboam and even Rehoboam, those are hard names to say. Making bad decisions that we use those as our examples of what not to do.

Encouragement to Follow God's Wisdom

00:12:58
Speaker
And to instead love God with our whole hearts and to do what he says is right, not what we want for our own selfish desires.
00:13:08
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me today. It was not a happy reading today, but it is still part of God's word and every day has daily application for us. I hope you feel that God has lit your light with these readings today.
00:13:24
Speaker
And if that is so, please click that light button. It looks like a heart or it looks like a thumbs up, but it's really a light button. And let's let our light shine strong for God today and point others to him.
00:13:37
Speaker
And so that the world will know that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. and His is the only way. His ways are above our ways, and we are not to do our own will, but God's will be done.
00:13:50
Speaker
And we can help people learn about this by spreading the word about reading God's word. but thank you for being here with me, and I will be here for everyone again tomorrow. I hope everybody has a fantastic rest of their day.
