Understanding GI Issues in Autistic Children

00:00:00
Speaker
We have several studies that have shown that autistic children can express gastrointestinal symptoms in emotional and behavioral ways, including irritability, agitation, aggression, non-compliance to requests, and even self-injurious behavior where kids hid their head against the wall or hurt themselves.

and even ticks. And when you think about it, isn't it kind of logical that if you have constipation, if you have diarrhea, if you have abdominal pain, if you have gas, if you're just feeling uncomfortable, wouldn't that logically worsen a child's behavior? It doesn't matter if they have an autism diagnosis, it doesn't matter if they have ADHD,
00:00:46
Speaker
It doesn't matter if they have no diagnosis of anything, if your child has got this function, whether that is visible to you or not, it is very likely that they will be cranky, they might not sleep well, which can make them even more irritable, it might cause them to have

Speaker
more attention issues, more learning issues.

Impact of Gut Health on Behavior and Sleep

00:01:10
Speaker
So this is again why I'm underscoring the importance of getting the gut balanced and any issues identified as soon as possible because there's so many benefits that you can reap.
00:01:22
Speaker
So many kids have their gut health restored and they're calmer, they sleep better, and there's so many benefits there beyond, again, just physical health. In terms of the research, there are studies showing that autistic children who also had gut conditions tended to be more anxious and irritable than children without gut problems.
00:01:49
Speaker
Another study found that children with gut dysfunction were more likely to display oppositional defiant behaviors and to throw tantrums than children without gut problems. And here's just a few studies that if you have a deeper interest, you can dig into these a little bit more and get a slightly better understanding of what the research has shown.

Addressing Health Challenges and Behavioral Manifestations

00:02:12
Speaker
because I just summarized it for brevity. Again, this module is not about becoming an expert in the health challenges that your child might have, but it's more understanding, getting a good grounding, a good foundation, understanding what is possible that could
00:02:33
Speaker
could be happening and what physical issues, what behavioral potentially manifestations they can have. So later on, again, when I discuss strategies to improve your child's health, testing for certain things, you will have a much deeper understanding why those things are important. We won't just be
00:02:57
Speaker
running tests for the sake of running tests.

Health Strategies for Better Physical and Cognitive Outcomes

00:03:00
Speaker
We won't just be cleaning up the diet and the environment for the sake of cleaning them up, but we won't be adding supplements to your child's program just for the sake of adding supplements. But these are all very specific things that are designed to improve underlying physical health, the hardware,
00:03:20
Speaker
With the potential benefit of this trickling up to the software, to the behavior, to the cognitive function, just to the ability to learn better, to sleep better.
