Joseph's Story: Dreams and Betrayal

00:01:25
Speaker
We are going to be picking up in Genesis 37, where we are going to be reading about Joseph. You may remember Joseph. Joseph was Rachel and Jacob's older son.
00:01:39
Speaker
Rachel had two sons and the first one was Joseph. The second one was Benjamin. And that's who we read about last week as she had one last baby before she unfortunately died in childbirth. But this is the son that Rachel had first, Joseph. And you probably are familiar with Joseph a little bit because he is the one that Jacob made the coat of many colors for. So that's the story we're going to be hearing about today.
00:02:10
Speaker
Jacob and Rachel's older son, Joseph, was growing up. He was 17 years old. He took care of sheep with his brothers, and his brothers were not acting right, so jacob so Joseph told his father, Jacob. Jacob was also called Israel, and he loved Joseph more than his other sons. He made a beautiful long coat for Joseph,
00:02:40
Speaker
Now, Joseph brothers saw that Jacob loved Joseph best, and they hated Joseph for this. In fact, they could hardly say anything kind to him. And one time, Joseph had a dream. He told his brothers about it. We were making piles of wheat in the field, Joseph said. My pile of wheat stood up. Your piles of wheat came all around my pile.
00:03:10
Speaker
And they bowed to mine. Joseph Brothers hated him even more because of his dream. Do you think you will be our boss? They asked. Joseph had another dream. He told his brothers about this dream too. The sun and moon bowed down to me, he said, and 11 stars bowed down to me. Joseph told his father Jacob about this dream.
00:03:37
Speaker
Jacob spoke. Now Joseph, do you really think our whole family will bow to you?
00:03:46
Speaker
Joseph's brothers were angry. They wanted to be special too. His father just kept thinking about what Joseph had said. And one day Jacob called for his son Joseph. Your brothers are taking care of the sheep and I want you to go to them. See if everything is going well for them and then come back and tell me.
00:04:08
Speaker
So off Joseph went and he came to where his brothers were supposed to be, but they were not there. A man saw Joseph in the field and he asked, who are you looking for? My brothers, said Joseph. Do you know where they took their sheep? I heard them say they were going to Dothan, said the man. So Joseph went to Dothan and that's where he found his brothers, but they saw him coming before he got there and they made plans to kill him.
00:04:39
Speaker
Here's the dreamer, they said. Let's kill him and throw him in a well, and we'll tell our father a wild animal ate him up. Then we'll find out what happens to his dreams. But Reuben tried to save Joseph. He said, let's not kill him. Throw into this dry well, but don't kill him. Reuben was planning to save Joseph. He planned to take Joseph home later.
00:05:07
Speaker
Joseph walked up to his brothers and they pulled his beautiful long coat off. They threw him into the dry well. Then they sat down and ate their lunch. Along came a line of men with camels. The camels had packs of spices on their backs and they were on their way to Egypt. Judah said, it won't do us any good to kill Joseph, so let's sell them to these men.
00:05:35
Speaker
The others thought that was a good idea. So the line of camels came close and the brothers took Joseph out of the well and they sold him to the men. They got 20 pieces of silver for him. Then the men and camels went on to Egypt.

Joseph in Egypt: Trust and Trials

00:05:53
Speaker
Now, Reuben did not know his brothers had sold Joseph. And so he went back to the well to save him, but Joseph wasn't there.
00:06:02
Speaker
Joseph is not there now, he said. What can I do? And they took Joseph's coat and they killed a goat. They dipped the coat in the goat's blood. Then they took the coat to their father. Look at what we have found, they said. Does this belong to Joseph?
00:06:25
Speaker
Jacob saw it once that it was Joseph's coat. It is Joseph's coat, he says. A wild animal has eaten him. And Jacob was so upset that he tore his clothes. Then he put on clothes made of old sackcloth. He cried for days and days. His family tried to make him feel better, but he would not cheer up. I'll be sad until the day I die, he said.
00:06:55
Speaker
And while this was happening, the men in camels got to Egypt. And there they sold Joseph. The captain of the king's guard bought him.
00:07:09
Speaker
Genesis chapter 39, at the captain's house. God took care of Joseph. He lived in the captain's house. The captain saw that God helped Joseph.
00:07:22
Speaker
Good things happened when Joseph was around. So the captain put Joseph in charge of everything at his house. With Joseph in charge, the captain didn't worry about anything. God took care of his house. Now the captain's wife saw that Joseph was very handsome. So she said to Joseph, come and be like a husband to me. But Joseph wouldn't.
00:07:50
Speaker
He said, the captain trusts me, how could I do such a thing? How could I do anything like that? It would not be right. And it would be a great sin against God. Every day the captain's wife came and said the same thing. And every day Joseph answered the same. In fact, he tried not to be around the captain's wife.
00:08:14
Speaker
One day, Joseph went into the house. He was going to take care of some work and no one else was around. But the captain's wife was there. She took hold of Joseph's coat. Come and be like a husband to me, she said. And Joseph ran out of the house and he left his coat in her hands.
00:08:35
Speaker
Then the captain's wife called her servants. See this? She said, Joseph came in here to be like a husband to me, but I called for help. And then he ran off in a hurry. See, here he left his coat. The captain's wife kept Joseph's coat with her. And later the captain came home. Then she told him the same thing.
00:09:02
Speaker
The captain was very angry and he threw Joseph into jail. But God was still with Joseph and God was good to him. The jail keeper liked Joseph. He put Joseph in charge of other people in the jail and the jail keeper trusted Joseph. He did not have to worry. God helped Joseph do a good job and God helped Joseph to take care of everything.
00:09:33
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading for today.

Lessons from Joseph: Values and Adversity

00:09:40
Speaker
So today we're gonna talk about Joseph's choice to do the right thing. And even though he was doing what he was told, first by following his father's direction to go check on his brothers, and later on in the Egyptian captain's guard's house, bad things happened to him.
00:10:02
Speaker
So remember, we're supposed to see ourselves in every story and to apply what we're seeing to our own life too. And so bad things happen even when we do the right things sometimes because sometimes people are jealous and they they want to see they want to be the way we are. They see how God has blessed us perhaps and they don't understand. And for whatever reason, they're just jealous or they just are mean and they are wanting to do bad things to people and you could be one of them.
00:10:33
Speaker
But what the story of Joseph teaches us is that even when supposed bad things happen, who is always looking out for us? God is. And it was not good experience for Joseph to to be taken by his brothers and almost killed and to be sold into slavery. But Joseph still had a good attitude and he did the right thing and he obeyed God. And God was with him always, wasn't he?
00:11:02
Speaker
And God will be with us always too. God knows our hearts. And God knew Joseph's heart was to do the right thing. And God sent him those dreams about the wheat that would bow down and the sun and the moon and the stars that bow down to him. And his brothers were jealous about those dreams. And so we see that Joseph still was very blessed and taken care of by God.
00:11:32
Speaker
So I want that to be an encouragement to you today as you think about the story that we've read about Joseph and that even though those people meant it for bad when the captain's wife did not tell the truth and accused Joseph falsely of wanting to be like a husband to her and she he had to go to jail even for it.
00:11:56
Speaker
and that's a terrible thing to have happen. But God uses absolutely everything and He is definitely capable of using everything for good. And this is the first time that um we see where someone is trying their best to do the right thing in the Bible. And yet despite that, bad things seem to be happening even though they're doing good.
00:12:23
Speaker
But God honors the heart and he took care of Joseph and he uses even supposed bad things for good. And later on, Joseph will tell his brothers that same thing, spoiler alert, that even though they meant it for bad, God used it for good.

Trust in Divine Outcomes

00:12:43
Speaker
So be remembering of that as you go through your daily life. And even if you have a bad thing that happens in your day to day, then I want to encourage you to ask God and say, God, I'm upset about this thing that seems to be bad that happened to me. I don't understand it, but I trust you that you will market into good. So remember, you can always ask God to open your eyes and to show you the good that he will make of it.
00:13:12
Speaker
And God will honor that request because every single time I have asked God to show me the good, that he will work into something that is frustrating or seems bad. He has always, always answered that request for me and shown me the good that can come of it.

Personal Insights: Learning from Frustration

00:13:29
Speaker
Even yesterday, I was so frustrated because I was not satisfied with my recordings. And ah this morning when I got up, I thought about the good that God had used it for. And he's using that to teach me ah that I need to figure out how to ah Record and blend two different videos together because I'm not good at editing I can't edit yet. So when you see these recordings they are all the way through I don't have any editing done to them whatsoever and I i like that because I want it to be real I want it to be natural and I don't like the way things look when they are edited things cut and they will look kind of um where you can see a change in position or something and
00:14:19
Speaker
And I'm a real person. So I want you to see me as a real person. I don't want you to see necessarily a absolutely 100% perfect video because I'm not 100% perfect. I'm not even close. so But I do need to try to figure out how to maybe you know cut the part where I am good at the reading. And then if I don't like the discussion at the end,
00:14:43
Speaker
That's the part where I need to learn how to make a second video because that's the part I was unhappy with because it took way too long to be able to edit two videos and and piece them together into one and So God is showing me what I need to do So that is the good and I thought I would share that with you because I posted the video very very late yesterday and I was so frustrated and I just was Whatever. I'm done
00:15:13
Speaker
And I want you to be encouraged to know that absolutely every little thing God can and will use. And I'm so thankful to our God for that. So that's all I have for you today. And I hope you have a great rest of your day. And I'm really looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Thank you for joining me.
