In today's reading we will read complete the reading of the Book of Zechariah with Chapters 11-14. Today we will read prophesy about the coming Messiah, the rejection of the Messiah by the Israelite people, the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas when he betrayed Jesus and the return of the money to the temple, used to buy the Potter's Field,  the scattering of the disciples when Jesus would be arrested, the blood of the Messiah cleansing sin from our hearts,  the wounds that Thomas would ask to see in Jesus' hands, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the deception of the antichrist who will hurt many people, the eventual belief in Jesus as the Messiah by the Israelite people and their regret about having not believed in Him, the return of Jesus (the day which only God knows), the eventual celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles by all nations and the consequence for not doing so, and the new Jerusalem when God will be the source of all light in the world, both day and night! WOW! WOW! WOW!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God knowing the plans He has for us. Plans for hope and a future. God is in control of everything! God gave us these prophesies so that those who have ears to hear and eyes to see will know and understand the plans He has for us. God set these events in motion thousands of years ago. Some of the prophecies have already been fulfilled and some are yet to be fulfilled. We can trust in God's appointed times and know that when they arrive God will faithfully fulfill them as He always has. God can be trusted! He knows the plans He has for us: plans for a future and hope! God is still on the winning side! God has defeated sin; Jesus has defeated death! Whoever believes in Jesus will have springs of living water flowing from them when they receive the Holy Spirit and become One with the Living God, who is Three in One and also in us! Hallelujah! (Praise God!)

Engagement and Commitments

00:00:44
Speaker
If you are following along on your commitment calendar, it's time to get that out and your sticker or however you're marking it off because guess what? That's right.
00:00:55
Speaker
You're about to hear the Bible today. And we have a lot of Bible to hear today.

Overview of Zechariah 11-14

00:01:01
Speaker
We are going to be finishing the book of Zechariah. We are going to be covering chapters 12, 13, and 11. 11, 12, 13, and 14.
00:01:09
Speaker
actually is starting with eleven eleven twelve thirteen and fourteen And as we've talked about, the book of Zechariah says a lot about Jesus. It also talks a lot about the time of tribulation and what we call the end times.
00:01:27
Speaker
So today we are going to dig in to God's word and we are going to ah look at what Zechariah was given from God to tell us about these times.
00:01:39
Speaker
Remember that the purpose of God's prophecies is so that we would know who the Messiah would be and things that would happen. So that one, we would be aware of when these things happen to be alert so that we would know not to be deceived.
00:01:56
Speaker
And so that we would know that God has a plan. God is in charge. These things are not just happening by chance.

Role of Prophecies in Identifying the Messiah

00:02:06
Speaker
Everything that happens, God knows about and he is orchestrating.
00:02:11
Speaker
So we are going to be seeing how God is going to be bringing the Messiah and what the response will be from the Jewish people and what God will do after that.
00:02:24
Speaker
And he will even talk about the Holy Spirit being given to everybody. So there is a lot that God is going to be revealing to Zechariah. Now, this is not done very plainly. This is done as Karen Henley writes it. She writes chapter 11's title as a riddle.
00:02:45
Speaker
So remember also that part of the reason that God has given his messages this way is that the wise, those who have eyes to see and ears to hear will understand.
00:02:56
Speaker
And those who are not wise will not have discernment.

Imagery in Zechariah's Messages

00:03:00
Speaker
They will not be able to understand the words that God has given. And that is part of the reason why he does it this way.
00:03:09
Speaker
God uses a lot of imagery. He uses a lot of do this to represent that. And we're going to be seeing that with Zechariah today as Zechariah is instructed to take care of some sheep as a shepherd.
00:03:25
Speaker
When we hear about the shepherds, we are that is going to be referring to Israel's leaders. Remember that King David was a shepherd and Jesus is our good shepherd.
00:03:38
Speaker
And that the leaders of the Israelite nation were meant to be looking over God's people, much like a shepherd looks after his sheep.
00:03:49
Speaker
But God has been telling us that he is going to be very unhappy with the way that the shepherds are looking after the sheep. They are not caring for the sheep. And so what we're going to be hearing today is that the shepherds are profiting from the sheep.
00:04:08
Speaker
And this is where later on we will read that Jesus overturns the tables in the marketplace and calls it a den of thieves. So these are the types of things that we're going to be seeing that will be occurring.

Prophetic Elements: Judas and 30 Pieces of Silver

00:04:23
Speaker
Notice that Zechariah is prophesying these things before they happen.
00:04:30
Speaker
We're also going to be reading about the 30 pieces of silver that were paid to Judas when he betrayed Jesus. So keep your ears open for a lot of prophecy.
00:04:43
Speaker
I want to tell us these things ahead of time so that as we read them, we will have greater understanding so that we're not just very confused about what we're reading. Because I tell you what, when I first read it today, was a mite confused.
00:04:58
Speaker
Ha ha ha. God to spend good deal of time showing me and and giving me passages to read and looking up commentaries to understand.
00:05:09
Speaker
And we want to of course, make sure that we do what when we read God's word? When we read God's word. We want to make sure that we understand what we are reading.
00:05:19
Speaker
This event is not about simply reading through the Bible in one year. This event is meant to give us the big picture. all the way through in chronological order so that we understand what is going on.
00:05:33
Speaker
So this understanding of God's picture of what he has to come is very important. And so I'm taking the time to explain what we're going to be reading before we get to it so that as we hear it, it will ah have understanding. We will have understanding of it.
00:05:51
Speaker
Are you ready?

Riddles and Symbolism in Leadership

00:05:52
Speaker
Here we go. I may actually stop at each chapter to explain the chunk of what we have read and so that we can have a full understanding of that big picture.
00:06:03
Speaker
Starting with chapter 11, Karen Henley has entitled this, A Riddle.
00:06:11
Speaker
God said, and remember he is speaking to Zechariah, choose sheep, put them in the field. They will be like my people.
00:06:23
Speaker
they will have trouble. So I took care of the sheep and I took special care of the ones who had trouble. I got two sticks used for walking.
00:06:35
Speaker
I named one stick, kindness, and in the big Bible it says favor.
00:06:43
Speaker
And I named the other stick, together. I had to send three bad shepherds away in one month. But the sheep hated me.
00:06:54
Speaker
i got tired of them. and I said, i won't be your shepherd anymore. Let the sheep die. i broke the walking stick named kindness, also called favor.
00:07:08
Speaker
The troubled sheep knew it was God's word. I told them, pay me if you think you should. If you don't think you should pay me, keep the money.
00:07:22
Speaker
So they paid me, me being Zechariah. They paid Zechariah. And they paid me 30 pieces of silver. That might sound like a lot, but it's actually a very cheap amount.
00:07:36
Speaker
In my reading today, God showed me that 30 pieces of silver was the amount that was to be repaid to somebody if an animal had ah maimed.
00:07:48
Speaker
had hurt ah somebody's slave. So the slave's value for being injured was to be repaid at 30 pieces of silver. So it was considered a very low value.
00:08:01
Speaker
God told me, throw the money to the potter. The potter was the lowest position in the temple. So I threw the silver in the potter's house.
00:08:15
Speaker
Then I broke my walking stick named together. That meant that Judah and Israel weren't together anymore.
00:08:26
Speaker
A shepherd would take two sticks, one to as a crook, a hooked stick, in order to get a sheep that had wandered into a place that was hard for him to reach to rescue.
00:08:41
Speaker
And he would carry a second stick that would be used to beat off wild animals to protect the sheep. So these are the two sticks that God is referring to.
00:08:56
Speaker
Then God told me, I'm going to bring a shepherd for this land. But he won't care about lost sheep. He won't look for little ones. He won't to make the sick ones well.
00:09:08
Speaker
He won't feed the strong ones. Instead, he will eat the meat of the best sheep.

The Antichrist and False Shepherds

00:09:17
Speaker
This is a reference to the Antichrist and the agreement that in the future, after the temple has been rebuilt, the Jewish people will make a promise, a deal with the Antichrist because they will think that he is the Messiah.
00:09:35
Speaker
There is bad news for the shepherd who is no good, the Antichrist. He leaves his sheep. Let the sword hit him and then he can't see or work.
00:09:50
Speaker
Chapter 12, Fire and a Fountain. Here is what God says about Israel. He says, i am going to make Jerusalem like a cup.
00:10:03
Speaker
It will be like a drink that makes people dizzy. All nations in the world will come to fight Jerusalem. Then I will make Jerusalem like a rock that won't move.
00:10:16
Speaker
Anybody who tries to move it will get hurt. I'll make the war horses panic. I'll make the riders go crazy, says God.
00:10:28
Speaker
I will make Judah's leaders like a pot of fire. They will be like a pot of fire in a wood pile. They will be like a stick of fire

Jerusalem's Protection and Cleansing

00:10:38
Speaker
in a haystack.
00:10:41
Speaker
They will take over people everywhere. But Jerusalem will stay where it is. It won't get hurt. I will get rid of every nation that comes to fight Jerusalem.
00:10:54
Speaker
Then a fountain will open for my people. It will clean sin out of their hearts. Jesus is blood.
00:11:05
Speaker
I will get rid of the idols from the land. Nobody will even remember them, says God. I'll take away sin, and I will take away prophets who lie.
00:11:18
Speaker
Wake up, sword. Fight against my shepherd. This is the people who will reject the Messiah. Fight against the one who is close to me, says God.
00:11:32
Speaker
Jesus is the one who was close to him. Hit the shepherd and then the sheep will run here and there.
00:11:40
Speaker
This is where Jesus told the disciples, soon you will leave me. When he was telling them that at the time when he would be arrested, they would scatter. And he quoted to them, for it is written, hit the shepherd and then the sheep will scatter.
00:11:58
Speaker
I will take the ones who are left. I will clean them up like silver. i will test them like gold. They will call my name and I will answer them. I will say that they are my people.
00:12:13
Speaker
They will say that I, the Lord, am their God.
00:12:18
Speaker
The ones who are left are now the Gentiles. The Gentiles will now also call God their God and will be God's people too.
00:12:29
Speaker
Chapter 14, one-of-a-kind day.
00:12:36
Speaker
God's day is coming and then God will go out and fight the nations. His feet will stand on olive mountain. It's east of Jerusalem. Olive mountain will break into two parts.
00:12:51
Speaker
A big valley will be made in the middle and half of the mountain will move north and half of it will move south. Then God will come. All the holy ones will come.
00:13:06
Speaker
This is when Jesus returns.
00:13:10
Speaker
There won't be any light on that day. There won't be any cold or ice. That day will be one of a kind. It's a day that God knows about.

Jesus' Return and Symbolism of Living Water

00:13:20
Speaker
When night should come, it will be light.
00:13:24
Speaker
Jesus told us that no one knows the day of his return, not even the sun. It's a day that only our father in heaven knows. And the light that is being referred to is in the new heaven.
00:13:38
Speaker
There won't be any night or day. It will all be light because God's light will shine and will be the source of light for everything. And that's in Revelation chapter 21 and referenced in verses 23 through 25.
00:13:55
Speaker
twenty five and then again in Revelations chapter 22, verse 5. For those of you looking for more of God's word there. We may read that. Then water that brings life will flow out of Jerusalem.
00:14:12
Speaker
Half of it will flow to the sea on the east. Half of it will flow to the sea on the west. It will flow in summer and in winter.
00:14:23
Speaker
This is the Holy Spirit. And here's where Jesus told us that for him who believes in in Jesus, springs of living water will flow from him.
00:14:35
Speaker
Springs of living water flow from us because he has given us the Holy Spirit.
00:14:43
Speaker
And that was also referencing when God would pour out the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, which we celebrated not too long ago.
00:14:55
Speaker
When we count it up, up for Shavuot. So all that time, that was a reference. When God created Shavuot for the counting up, God was anticipating that day of the spirit being poured out.
00:15:12
Speaker
And here he is once again referencing that streams of living water will flow.
00:15:19
Speaker
The Lord will be king of the whole earth. There will be only one Lord then. His name will be the only name. Our God is one.
00:15:30
Speaker
He will bring oneness, it says in the Big Bible. We will look at that. Jerusalem will stay where it is and people will live in it. It will never be torn down again.
00:15:42
Speaker
Jerusalem will be safe. People will write holy to the Lord on the horse's bells. Every pot in Judah will be holy to God.
00:15:54
Speaker
Everyone who comes to God's house will belong to him. We are now the home for the Holy Spirit and for God. And so we are holy to God because we are all the temple.
00:16:05
Speaker
We hold the Holy Spirit within us.
00:16:09
Speaker
And in the Big Bible, it actually tells us in Zechariah verse fourteen chapter 14 there,
00:16:17
Speaker
I'm going to include that. I definitely have to include that in our reading. It says that.
00:16:31
Speaker
I was only on chapter 13. No wonder I couldn't find it there.

Recognition of the True Messiah

00:16:43
Speaker
In Zechariah 14. verse 8, where it talks about the living waters. It says, moreover in that day living waters will flow from jerusalem half toward the eastern sea and half toward the western sea both in the summer and in the winter and ajut the lord will then be king over all the earth and in that day the lord will be
00:17:10
Speaker
one in his name oneness so Remember, we are now one with God. We have the Holy Spirit with us who hears from Jesus, who hears from God.
00:17:25
Speaker
and the And our Father is three in one. And now we are also one with him. And so his name is oneness. Isn't that amazing?
00:17:37
Speaker
there There was a lot in today's reading, wasn't there? I'm going to go back and we're going to look at a little bit more information as well because we're going to look at what's also included in Zechariah chapter 13 after, let's see.
00:17:55
Speaker
after
00:17:58
Speaker
let's see
00:18:03
Speaker
In that day, a spring will be opened where we talk about in the beginning where, um well, that we we, our verse fire and fountain included 12 and 13 chapters.
00:18:14
Speaker
And so God says, then ah ah after he says that he will make the leaders like a pot of fire, he says, then a fountain will open for his people and it will clean sin out of their hearts.
00:18:27
Speaker
And it will happen in that day that I will erase the names of the idols and
00:18:34
Speaker
And he says, then someone, uh, he says he will no longer, nobody will be able to prophesy falsely. And he says that when we see Jesus,
00:18:45
Speaker
He says, i am, he says, someone will ask him, what are these wounds between your hands? And he will answer those that i received in the house of my friends.
00:18:56
Speaker
So verse six of chapter 13 in Zechariah, which is not included in our version, ah mentions the wounds between his hands and that, and that's doubting Thomas.
00:19:09
Speaker
when he said, I will not believe until I see. And he says, and Jesus showed him and he said, look, see the wounds between my hands. I received in the house of my friends.
00:19:26
Speaker
Let's see. I think that was everything. I pretty much tried to talk about everything as we were speaking about it. just wanna make sure. i had to pause for a moment moment while i looked for that ah one verse and so it kind of put me off but i i think that's about everything there i wanted to be sure and explain as we were reading so isn't that a great deal in the book of zechariah that was covered about jesus and revelation ah we're going to be reading of course revelation at the very end
00:20:00
Speaker
And we will be seeing when we get to the new covenant here next month around August 17th. So we're just a couple of weeks away. And then once we start seeing Jesus's teaching, we will be able to refer to where these verses prophesied about these things happening.
00:20:19
Speaker
So all of these things were and or made aware to the people so that they would be able to recognize the Messiah when he came.
00:20:30
Speaker
And I know what I was going to add.
00:20:35
Speaker
In chapter 12, after we read about the, um, the, the leaders being made like a, like a fire in verses 10 through, through 11,
00:20:53
Speaker
eleven Zechariah tells us that he will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace, and they will look toward me whom they pierced.
00:21:06
Speaker
So this is where God will open their eyes. So after the ah the Antichrist. then he will, they their eyes will be opened and they will see and they will mourn the fact, they will be sad for the fact that they rejected the is the true Messiah and grace will be given to them. And their and it says that a spirit of grace and supplication when they will look toward me whom they pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn.
00:21:46
Speaker
In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem. So we we will see that when ah God opens their eyes and gives them grace, then that's when a great number of believers um will be turned and in the Jewish community ah to believe in the true Messiah.

Divine Timing and the Antichrist's Deception

00:22:06
Speaker
But first they will have the the bad shepherd who will hurt them. They will think that he is the Messiah who has come.
00:22:16
Speaker
And then God will show them that they were wronged and they will mourn, they will grieve. They will be very sad for the fact that they ah did not acknowledge Jesus as the true Messiah.
00:22:29
Speaker
So i I don't know why our version didn't include that. Maybe it just was deemed too big. I'm not really sure, but after that happens, then it says that in in that day, a spring will be opened to the house of David and cleanse them from their sin and impurity.
00:22:46
Speaker
And, And that's also, so they will also receive the the outpouring of the Holy Spirit for them as well. So what is our daily application through all of this understanding as we are reading today these many verses or chapters rather about ah Jesus is coming.
00:23:06
Speaker
It's like what we talked about before we started, that God knows the plans that he has for us, plans for a hope and a future. Even for those people who will be deceived by the Antichrist, God is sending, will be sending out a spirit of grace.
00:23:25
Speaker
And God is so loving. God is so kind. And it is just so important to remember that he is in charge and he is allowing these things to happen and things must happen in their time.
00:23:39
Speaker
but everything is happening at the time that God ordains. It says today that only God knows the day that that the the sun will come again. And he is in charge of all of these things. So that's not the first time we read that.
00:23:53
Speaker
And so today's lesson, like our daily application is again to remember that God knows the plans that he has for us. And Zechariah chapters 11, 12, 13, and 14 show us this in great detail.
00:24:08
Speaker
All of the many things that will happen, some of which have already happened and others of which are going to occur still in the future.

Significance of the Feast of Tabernacles

00:24:16
Speaker
What we did not also cover was in verse chapter 14.
00:24:21
Speaker
It says that all of the nations will participate in the Feast of Tabernacles. And that is coming up later in the year when I'm going to be encouraging us to prepare our hearts for observing the Feast of Tabernacles, because it says that even when Jesus comes back, we will all be meant to observe this this festival.
00:24:46
Speaker
And God actually issues a very stern warning. That he says that ah he will issue a plague. He says and after everything is won, he says people will dwell in Israel.
00:25:04
Speaker
And and he will strike up the people with a plague.
00:25:11
Speaker
because it says all the survivors from the nations that attacked Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the king, the Lord God of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:25:24
Speaker
He says in verse 17, furthermore, if any of the nations on earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the king, the Lord God of hosts, they will have no reign.
00:25:37
Speaker
If the Egyptians do not go up and celebrate, they will have no rain. Instead, there will be the plague that the Lord will inflict on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:25:49
Speaker
This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. In that day, Holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses.
00:26:04
Speaker
So we read about the bells on the horses, but this is what it's referring to is in the day that we go up to celebrate or whoever the remnant that is left, the survivors, they will inscribe on the bells of the horses and the pots in the house of the Lord will be like sacred bowls in front of the altar.
00:26:24
Speaker
In fact, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be holy to the Lord God of hosts so that everyone who comes to sacrifice will take them and cook in them. And in that day, there will no longer be a merchant.
00:26:45
Speaker
I lost my place in the house of the Lord. There will no longer be a merchant. So remember, there were people selling animals for sacrifice. And that's because Jesus already paid that.
00:26:59
Speaker
So, and that is the end of of Zechariah there. So it's important to note that we ah we will still be celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles in that future time. So it's important to note that we should be celebrating it now as well before he returns.
00:27:16
Speaker
Because if it's supposed to be going on then, we're still supposed to be doing it now. And it is what is referred to in the Old Covenant as a Moedim. in appointed time god gives us these appointed times So hearts to look toward the future the future.
00:27:34
Speaker
for our hope and our future events like what we read about today so i want to encourage you to start preparing your hearts to ah to looked toward a new feast that we should be celebrating this year. It's new for us, but it's not new for the Jewish people.
00:27:53
Speaker
But for us who are believers in Jesus, and we would call ourselves Christians, um it's it's very important that we should be observing this feast of Tabernacles.
00:28:03
Speaker
And so I want us to start preparing our hearts for that now, as God is putting it on my heart. And God is showing us through his word that it is important that we still be celebrating it.

Conclusion and Call to Share the Message

00:28:16
Speaker
So I hope that you have enjoyed today's reading. It was a bit lengthy, but as you see, we had a lot to go into today in order to be able to understand the words that we were given today.
00:28:27
Speaker
So thank you for joining me. Thanks for sticking through all the way to the end. And when you get all the way to the end, please remember to click that light button that looks like a thumbs up or it looks like a heart, but please click that light button.
00:28:40
Speaker
so that we can draw others to this event and help spread the word about reading God's word, so that other people will know how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies that are written about today, were written about that we read about today. They were not written today.
00:28:54
Speaker
For prophecies that we read about to today in Zechariah, and to know what God holds for our future, plans for a hope. We are still on the winning side. God is has defeated sin.
00:29:08
Speaker
Jesus has defeated death. And that all who believe in him will have springs of living water flowing through him. And that they will not perish, but have eternal life.
00:29:20
Speaker
