Immune System Dysregulation and Autism

Speaker
Next up, we'll look at immune system dysregulation. This is going to be a very brief overview because there's been a lot of research done in this area and while certainly more research needs to be done to fully understand these immune system dysregulation mechanisms, many studies have already found associations between blood markers of immune activation and inflammation and the severity of certain behaviors in

Immune Molecules and Autism Behaviors

autism.
00:00:25
Speaker
So in other words, when certain immune molecules were high or too low, the children had higher scores on the behavioral measures used to determine the autism severity. Some examples of what the researchers have found where the immune system was dysregulated

based on the markers studied included more impaired social behaviors and communication, increased restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior and interests, lower adaptive behaviors, worse behavioral symptoms, poor social development, increased irritability, hyperactivity or lethargy.

The Gut's Role in Immune Regulation

00:01:04
Speaker
what I covered earlier about the gut and the fact that about 70% of the immune system cells are located in the gut. What that means is if you have a disrupted gut, which as you already saw in the previous videos is very common in autistic children, from there it is logical to assume that a disrupted gut will equal a dysregulated immune system, imbalanced immune system.

And

Gut-Brain Interaction and Behavior Changes

00:01:33

as I mentioned before, the bacteria in the gut, they can produce various chemicals, molecules, neurotransmitters. These can get into the brain, they can get into the central nervous system, and they can exert an effect on behavior. The same goals for various

immune molecules created by the immune system. These can also, a lot of them are signaling molecules, they can cause inflammation to be created or to be reduced. So they can be inflammatory or anti-inflammatory molecules. And when there's an imbalance, these molecules can travel to various places in the body, including the brain, including the central nervous system, and they can also cause inflammation there.

Strategies to Balance Immune System in Children

They can also cause changes in behavior.

Speaker
So this is an important topic because there are things that I will teach you later on that you can do to reduce the factors that cause imbalances or dysregulation in your child's immune system.
